Crowd-lighting is a social venture that uses crowdfunding to support rural electrification projects in Indonesia using renewable energy. It aims to involve youth in fundraising for projects that bring electricity to remote communities currently lacking access. The initiative will launch a website to fund initial awareness campaigns and starter projects, with the goal of fully crowdfunding the electrification of 100 communities, training 100 local technicians, and supporting 10 innovative energy ideas within 5 years. Sustainability is ensured by transparent reporting, appropriate technology selection, ongoing communication between stakeholders, and allocating 10% of project costs to operations.
Crowd-lighting connects youth to rural electrification
1. • Crowd-lighting is a social venture providing
an innovative funding approach for rural
electrification using renewable energy
technologies.
• Crowd-lighting innovative will involve the
youth to participate in the project.

2. Background
• Almost 50 million people in Indonesia, mostly in remote
rural areas, lack electricity to light their houses or to
conduct business. Most of them are living in the dark at
night, of which some are lucky to count on dirty kerosene.
• Extending a national grid is simply too costly and installing a
new diesel generator is not commercially viable as fuel is
not easy to get and the price is high in such area.
• There is only limited channel for youth to financially
support such schemes.
• Indonesia’s youth have the potential to contribute to the
rural / small island electrification.
4. Main Missions
1. To raise awareness of Indonesia’s youth
towards rural electrification and also to
raise their empathy towards the real
problem of rural / small island
communities.
2. To raise fund from youth to realize the
rural electrification project.
5. Why Youth Power?
• According to Statistics Indonesia (Badan Pusat
Statistik), total Youth in Indonesia (2015) is
62,4 million people or 25% from total
Indonesian citizen.
• 57,94% of the total youth live in Java Island.
• Indonesia’s youth have the potential to
contribute to the rural electrification.
• Indonesia’s youth usually participate in crowd-
funding for film projects or music projects.
6. Definition of Youth
The UN for statistical consistency across regions,
defines ‘youth’, as those persons between the
ages of 15 and 24 years
7. Why Crowd-lighting is Unique?
Crowd-lighting is innovative and unique in three aspects.
• Firstly, its technology scope to support rural electrification project using
micro off-grid system. This will accelerate electrification programmes in
remote rural communities using clean energy.
• Secondly, endorsement for innovators; rural electrification needs
collective work from youth. Crowd-lighting seeks to make innovation as a
pop-culture that invites more youth to be involved in the development
process.
• Thirdly, connection, in terms of making energy equality issue more
“popular”, not only by exposing the problems but also inviting youth to
actively involve as part of the solution.
8. Project Types
“Fund the Villages”
&
“Back the Idea”
• “Fund the Villages”
A scheme to raise fund for
electrification project in selected
communities, such as providing
100 solar lanterns for 100
households in Maluku. The
collected fund will cover up-front
costs; design, technology,
installation, and setting up local
agent (called as “local lighter”).
• “Back the Idea”
A scheme to raise fund to support
the development of innovative
electrification ideas/products.
The collected fund will be used to
develop prototypes and
marketing kit for the innovators
to further introduce the
technology to people.
9. Benefits
Benefits for the rural communities /
small island communities
• Electricity will change the daily life of
the communities not only in practical
changes like cooking habits, hygiene
and health, spare time, education and
information facilities, but also within
the epistemological dimension such as
thinking about life, anticipating the
future, or being connected to the
outside world.
• Crowd-lighting will also create job for
the communities as local lighters. Local
lighters are the extended hands to the
ground, to the communities. They are
selected people who have strong
commitment and will be equipped with
the technical skills.
Benefits for the “crowd” / youth
• On the other side, the “crowd” who live
in urban area having reliable access to
electricity (called as “funder”), will be
aware and take role in the quest for
equal access in energy. For any given
support to fund a project, they would
create a connection as one nation in
sharing the burden to tackle social issue
elsewhere throughout the country.
• Meanwhile, the innovators (called as
“idea lighter”) will have the platform to
invest in developing their innovative
ideas. This will spark the passion to do
research and develop innovative
product on electricity and bring it into
the market.
10. For the first three
months, Crowd-
lighting will start
with website
development as the
crowdfunding
platform and
launching of
general awareness
campaign on
situation of current
rural electrification
condition and
possible solution.
First 3 months
In the following
six to nine
months, five
ignition/starter
projects will serve
as a showcase.
Crowd-lighting
will test the
crowdfunding
scheme for
selected
identified projects
which need
funding support.
3-9 months
After one year,
Crowd-lighting will
be fully running
with a more
extensive
campaign to raise
fund both online
and offline.
After 12 months
In five years, the
expected outputs are:
(a) 100 rural
communities equipped
with electricity systems
for the people to
perform productive
activities,
(b) 100 local lighters
are activated; they
have a job and run
their own business,
and (c) 10 innovative
electrification
ideas/products are
supported to be
realized.
5 years
Realisation plan and potential for scaling up within five years
11. Sustainability Plan
Sustainability is nurtured firstly by building and flourishing trust
among funders and other stakeholders through transparent and
consistent reporting on both fund disbursement and the impact
achieved.
Secondly, by assessing suitable technology and its
distribution/installation mechanism to ensure the customers will
benefit quality products and/or services.
Thirdly, intensive communication beyond merely transferring
money between lighters, funders, and beneficiaries is vital.
Such communication is done through basic ICT technologies such
as SMS or mobile apps. This is to ensure the beneficiaries
understand the know-how of the systems and allows the funders
to be involved in every step of the process.
Lastly, to be financially sustained as a social venture, up to 10%
share from each project cost will be used for Crowd-lighting
operation.
