COMMONLY KNOWN AS MARCELO H. DEL PILAR
WAS A FILIPINO WRITER, LAWYER, JOURNALIST, AND
FREEMASON.
5. MONASTIC SUPREMACY IN THE PHILIPPINES REFERS TO THE
PERIOD IN PHILIPPINE HISTORY WHEN THE CATHOLIC CHURCH
HAD SIGNIFICANT POLITICAL AND ECONOMIC POWER. IT LASTED
FROM THE SPANISH COLONIAL PERIOD UNTIL THE SEPARATION
OF CHURCH AND STATE IN THE EARLY 20TH CENTURY. DURING
THIS TIME, THE CATHOLIC CHURCH CONTROLLED VAST AMOUNTS

•DURING 1800'S AND VIOLATION OF
HUMAN RIGHTS WAS PREVALENT IN
THE RELIGIOUS AND POLITACAL
ASPECT.
•IN THE POLITICAL ASPECT, THE FRIARS ENTERFERED IN
THE PHILIPPINES GOVERNMENT FOR ALONG TIME. IT WAS
FIRMLY ESTABLISH. THUS, WITHOUT ANY DIFFICULTY,
THEY CONTROLLED THE STATUS QUO OF THE COUNTRY
DEFIANCE OF THE NATION AND THE INSTITUTIONS. THEY
FRIGHTEN THE GOVERNMENT WITH THE REBELLIOUSNESS
OF THE COUNTRY WITH THE DEPOSITION OF THE
GOVERNMENT.
8. •THE FRIARS EVEN IMPOSED A SYSTEM WHERE FILIPINOS ARE
FORCE TO WORK IN BUILDING THE CHURCHES AND THEIR
DWELLINGS ( CALLED CONVENTOS ) AS BY THE MILLITARY-
CIVIL ADMINISTRATION IN MAKING HIGHWAYS, BRIDGES, ETC.
NOTE THAT TE LABOR THUS OWED TO THE GOVERNMENT WAS
FREQUENTLY HIRED OUT TO INDIVIDUALS AND PUBLIC WORKS
IN MANY PROVINCES WERE NEGLECTED, WHILE OFFICIAL
POCKETS WERE LINED.
•IT ALSO CLAIMED THAT THE FRIARS INTRODUCE VILLAGE LITE; BUT THE
TRUTH IS UNDER THEIR GUIDANCE,THE COMMUNITIES CENTERED MORE
AND MORE ABOUT THE CHURCHES WHICH WERE BUILT UNDER THEIR
SUPRVISION. IT ALSO ALLEGED THAT THE FRIAR ASSURE TO BE THE
SUPREME REPRESENTATIVE OF AUTHORITY AND BELITTLE THE DIGNITY OF
LAY OFFICIAL ; INTRIGUE FOR THE REMOVAL OF SUCH OFFICIAL, BOTH
SMALL AND GREAT, WHO WILL NOT SUBMIT TO DICTATIONS.
9. •THE FILIPINOS PAY DIRECT TAXES CONSISTING OF
THE PERSONAL CEDULA, URBAN TAX, INDUSTRIAL
SUBSIDY, AND ADDITIONAL MUNICIPAL TAX,
PROVINCIAL TAX AND PERSONAL LOAN.
•THEY ALSO PAY INDIRECT TAXES WICH ARE
MARKET S/MARCHINDIES, VEHICLES, HORSES,
STAMPS AND SURCHARGES, SLAUGHTER OR CATLE,
RIVER ROLLS, AND OTHERS
10. •ANOTHER TAX WHICH NOT INCLUDED IN THE
FINANCIAL PLAN OF THE PHILIPPINES IS THE
RELIGIOUS FESTIVAL TAX.
•IT IS NO LONER FANATICISM THAT BUILD THE OPULENCE, BUT RATHER,
THE FER OF THE GROUP WHICH HAS BEN RAISED TO THE POWER IN WHICH

JEOPARDIZES THE FUTURE OF THE PHILIPPINES AS
WELL AS THE HIGHEST INTEREST OF BOTH
COUNTRIES.
13. ECONOMIC ASPECT
•THE PHILIPPINE GOVERNMENT LACKS RESOURCES
TO UNDERTAKE PUBLIC WORKS; ON THE OTHER
HAND, THE MONASTIC ORDERS BUILD GRAND AND
COSTLY CONVENTS IN MANILA AND IN EACH PARISH
OF THREE THOUSAND SOULS, THEY ERECT A
SPACIOUS PALACE FOR THE RESIDENCE OF THE
REGULAR CURATE.
• THE GOVERNMENT FINDS A THOUSAND OBSTACLES
IN COLLECTING TAXES FROM THE TAX PAYING
PUBLIC; BUT THE MONASTIC ORDERS EMPTY

• THE GOVERNMENT REFRAINS FROM CREATING NEW SOURCES
OF REVENUE IN ORDER NOT TO BURDEN FILIPINO INTEREST, BUT
THE FRIARS INVENT EVERY DAY NEW FORMS OF DEVOTION,
SOME VERY COSTLY, AND THE PUBLIC PAY, NOT BECAUSE OF
FANATICISM, BUT RATHER, FOR FEAR OF DISPLEASING THE
FRIARS WHOSE POWER THEY KNOW HAS SENT MANY INNOCENT
VICTIMS TO EXILE.
