2.0 Description of history of the business and involvements
History of Cafes The history of cafe is known to take back as far as the 1629 in Venice
where coffeehouses were quickly established after the introduction of coffee in Europe. After its
establishment, it quickly became popular among the Europeans. The first coffeehouse in England
was set up in Oxford in the year 1652 by a Jewish man named Jacob at the Angel in the parish of St
Peter in the East. From 1670 to 1685, the number of London coffee-houses began to multiply, and
also began to gain political importance due to their popularity as places of debate. By 1675, there
were more than 3,000 coffeehouses in England.
Generally speaking, these cafes are known to be a meeting place where business could be
carried on, news exchanged and also a place for people to meet for casual hangouts. Back in the
days, the banning of women from coffeehouses were appeared to be common in Europe, though this
is not the case with other continents with a few exceptions such as Germany. In the event that a
woman is present in a café, she would be separated in a canopied booth, from which she serves
coffee in tall cups.
In most European countries such as Germany, Portugal and Sweden, the term café means a
restaurant primarily serving coffee as well as pastries such as cakes, tarts, pies or buns. Many cafes
also serve light meals such as sandwiches. Cafes in European countries commonly place tables on
the sidewalk while also having indoor settings. Alcoholic beverages may not be suitable in a café
but it is served occasionally in some cafes in the Southern Europe.
In recent times, many cafes have evolved from the traditional coffee serving to conceive
many various types of cafes such as a pet café, superhero-themed cafes and hipster cafes. A lot of
features were added to cafes over the years. It has become a very popular hangout spot amongst the
youngsters while it also remains as a place to relax for the adults and also the old aged.
In certain regions such as Netherlands and Belgium, a café is also the equivalent to a bar,
hence they would also sell alcoholic beverages. In France, most cafes sells the nation’s famous
delicacies such as croissant or pain au chocolat in the morning. Not only that, it also serves proper
lunch in the afternoon and acts as a bar in the evening for the gentlemen who is craving for some
entertainment. It is a similar case in Italy where cafes can be considered as bars.

3.0 Background Information Of The Business
Before we went for the interview, we have done some background research about these two
cafes through various channels such as waze, google maps and google chrome. Below are our
findings.
AMPM Café
The second shop is situated at a strategic location which is situated in USJ 21/5, Subang
Jaya, the AMPM Café. From the appearance, the café looks like it occupied only the first floor.
Don’t be fooled, it is actually owns the whole block, all 3 levels of it. Upon stepping inside the café,
you will be welcome by a friendly manager around the middle 20s, Mr. Eric and some of his
workers. This café has very good service and their workers are all very friendly and polite. They
sell western food, deserts and coffee, big breakfast style. Their main customer source are the
workers around the area and family and friends around the neighbourhood. During weekdays they
serve around 60 to 100 customers per day and open from 11 in the morning to 12 midnight. During
weekend, the café is usually pack with people customers that come a bit later have to wait outside
the shop for empty tables, it is open from 10 in the morning and closes at 12 midnight. The first
floor consist of half air-condition and half open-air space at the entrance of the shop. Second and
third floor only consist of air-condition. The furniture on the first floor consist of wooden furniture
only. On the second and third floor the furnitures are more to sofa and relaxing type. There are also
board games in the second and third floor. These board games are free to play with.
From the interview between our group and Mr. Eric, the Manager, we found out how the
business started and how it is form by their group of friend. Their café is opened on September,
2014. They have five partner and three main partner, Eric (himself), John and Joe. Their capital for
starting this business is roughly 600k. They used to work in a big restaurant and likes to go café for
their breakfast. During their free time, they talked about opening a café so they set off to work
finding this area. They liked the area so they rented the whole block. He use his knowledge to run
the café as manager during his work at the restaurant as manager as well. He said it is not easy to
run this business as you need to know about coffee and how a café runs but with passion anything is
possible. Their competitors is right next door and cafes in the Subang area. He said compare to
other cafes, he focuses on the menu and during festive season, they will come out with new

Calanthe Café
Calanthe Café is an old traditional coffee shop situated at Jalan Hang Kasturi, 75200
Melaka. Japan Hang Kasturi is also located at Jonker Street Calanthe Café is combined with two
stores now which is originally one store only. Calanthe Café is open everyday except Thursday.
From Monday to Wednesday, the shop operates from 12.00 pm to 11.00 pm. On Friday, it operates
from 12.00 pm to 12.00 am. On Saturday, Calanthe Café operates from 8.30 am to 12.00 am. On
Sunday, it operates from 8.30 am to 11.00 pm. There are two sitting places the customers can
choose from which is inside or outside. The decorations for Calanthe Café are more to traditional
Chinese style. There are lanterns hung at the awning of the roof. Some pictures of their famous
dishes are shown above the entrance to the cafe. The furnitures are made of wood. You will have
that feeling that you have travelled back in time back into the older days where mostly everything is
mode of wood. Inside the cafe, there are a lot of artworks. Those artworks are either hung on the
wall of dangling above our heads or just place on some shelf. They are very nice to admire.
Calanthe Café have this famous 13 States’ Coffee where different states have their own coffee
tastes. This cafe is kind of dim as they want to give the nostalgic feeling to the customers who go
there.
After some conversation with the one of the owner, Joseph, we have founded out that before
starting the business. They went to try all the types of coffee in Peninsular Malaysia and also West
Malaysia. Although it was costly, their passion to coffee has never let them down. They surveyed
the coffee taste across Malaysia and developed their idea for Calanthe Café from that. Other than
coffee, they also have Malaysia’s delicacies, For example, the famous Baba Nyonya food, Laksa,
Nasi Lemak and so on.
The business started in June 2005. At first, the customers who came were university
students that came from different states or even country. However, as the business increased and
became more famous, more tourist tend to come. And now 70% of their customers are tourists.

Office number: 06-292 2960
Interviewee: Joseph, 33, Manager
1) When was the business founded?
June 2005
2) Who are the key founders?
Total of five partners (Joe is the main) but only three of them is running the café – Joe,
Daniel and Joseph.
3) What prompted the founders to start this business?
During school time, they have a dream of opening a café after they retired but the dream
came early – Joe first to gather all the partners to start this business. Joseph is the first who
approach by Joe. He was in the sales career for years before this business started. They want
to have their own business and if the business turn out failed in the end they still could go
back to their original career and life.
4) What are your main products or services?
They sell things that attract not only tourist but the locals too. They went through many
places in the country to survey and taste the coffee because they are all coffee lovers. They
realized that different states have different taste of coffee. Here comes the main idea of their
products – gather all Malaysia’s coffee together. They choose to develop their business in
Malacca because ‘VISIT MELAKA = VISIT MALAYSIA’. For the beverage, there are a
lots of choices for customers such as the traditional coffee and ice blended coffee from 13
different states, soda drinks, juices, etc. For food, they all have no experience so they learn
some Baba Nyonya food from Daniel’s parents such as Laksa, Nasi Lemak and so on that’s
now the signature of the café.
5) Who are your customers? (e.g. Age group, income-level, education-level, etc.)
At the starting of the business, the main customers are the universities students that came
from different states or even country. However, it changed slightly over years. Now, it is

more focusing on the tourist because the 70% of their customers are tourist in the latest
figure.
6) What is the business’ annual revenue figure?
2015 is not really good but 2014 is 100k.
7) How many branch offices/stores do you have (if applicable)?
This is the only café they operating. They have branches of different industry – jewellery
and homestay.
8) Can you provide us a brief history of your business and its most recent developments?
The café is combined with two stores now which originally one is for jewellery and another
is for café purpose. They moved their jewellery business into a branch as the jewellery
business at Malacca is not stable and profitable. Other than that, they also come out with
new dishes occasionally along the year such as Christmas. They came out with the set meal
with promoting prices that is really attracting.
9) Do you have many competitors? Who are they? Who are your top 3 competitors?
They don’t see the other business is their competitors because the latest analysis shown that
tourist tend to stay at Malacca for 2.5 days which is already increased compare to the result
of the tourist only come for one day trip in the old analysis. The tourist can travel and visit
to many different places so that is not a competition from their perspectives. However, there
are still some similar industries along the street such as Geographer café. Old Town White
Coffee and Starbucks are the other competitors for them as these two company is in good
condition and have bif capacity compare to them.
10) How big is your market share as well as your top competitors?
Lower than the competitors.
11) Is the business constantly facing strong competition from other competitors? What strategies
have they used to compete with you?
No. It is because the Calanthe Café and the competitors have their own special products
although it is all about coffee. The competitors that is already financially stable able to
spend their expenses on advertisement. Compare to the competitors, the business do not
10. Foundation Natural Built & Environment 2016
10
have big budget to do the same with them so they fully use the power of internet, which is
the social media to promote their business.
12) How much capital is required to start this business? What, if any, specialized field of
knowledge do you need to run this business?
The business have low capacity at the starting with capital of only 70k. Joseph mentioned
that there is no particular skills that needed to run this business as all of the partners had
learn through the years when running this business together.
13) Generally, do you feel it is easy or hard to enter this market? Why?
It is easy to enter at the starting because 10 years ago, the number of café in the states are
very less. Years pass by years, it is even more harder now to get into the market because
there is over 20 different café are running in Malacca and becoming very competitive.
14) How do you compete with your competitors i.e. what strategies do you employ to divert
customers away from your competitors?
The business insists use the local employee or workers instead of foreigner because the
locals are more understanding the culture of the country. The business also encourage the
staffs to have a good relation with customer because this can improve the image of the café
and also promoting Malacca to the customers.
15) How often do you release a new product (note: this assumes the business sells differentiated
products)?
Occasionally throughout the year.
16) Are your pricing decisions strongly affected by your competitors? Why or why not?
No. The competitors are already in good condition and have bigger capacity compare to
theirs so the competitors can set lower or higher price. They decide the price based on what
they believe. They believe that the passionate and the knowledge to make a cup of good
coffee is more valuable than the pricing.

5.0 Recommendations
Business 1 : AMPM Cafe, Subang Jaya, Selangor.
Current Situation Recommendation
Limited parking. Since the place is
busy during peak hours, it is hard to
find parking space. Customers had to
park far from the cafe.
Rent few parking spaces nearby for
customers who made reservations.
Not handicap friendly. There were no
ramps for wheelchair bound customers.
Build a ramp in front of of the shop so
the handicaps can enjoy eating at this
cafe as well.
Not kids friendly. We have noticed
that there were no high chairs for
babies and they serve beers as well
which is not suitable for kids. Besides
that, they do not offer any kids menu.
Prepare at least two high chairs for
babies as their customers are mostly
families.
Provide kids menu to attract children.
Too little options on menu. Not
enough varieties of dishes and drinks
compared to other cafes.
Create new signature dishes and
drinks to attract more customers.

Business 2 : Calanthe Art Cafe, Melaka.
Current Situation Recommendation
Limited parking. During our visit, we
had to park far from the cafe as there
were no parking available nearby the
cafe.
Rent few parking spaces for
customers so the customers do not
have to walk so far to get to the cafe.
Not enough tables and chairs. There
were limited number of seats and
tables, therefore it is hard to get a table
during peak hours like lunch hours. It is
also hard for big families to get a table.
Put more chairs and tables for
bigger families.
Not handicap friendly. There were no
ramps and the space inside the cafe is
not suitable for wheelchair bounds. The
floor is bumpy, making it not suitable
for wheelchair bound.
Provide special table and parking
space for handicaps.
Not spacious. We have noticed that it
was hard to walk since the place is
packed with vintage furnitures.
Buy next door shop and renovate to
make a larger space for the cafe. They
can hang big mirrors to create the
illusion of larger space.
