Ba-Dwais; Dr. Shadia Yousef Banjar; Dr. Amira Gashgary.<br /> Course Objectives:<br /> This course is an introduction to the theory of Generative Transformational Grammar. Students at this level need a systematic understanding of basic grammatical concepts and terminology. The main objective of this course is to introduce students to the basic components of an English sentence. They need to learn how to analyse any structure (i.e. phrase, clause, sentence) into its basic elements. This will facilitate their comprehension and production of the language. They should be able to distinguish between different kinds of sentences, compare and contrast English structures, and perform syntactic operations on them. They are introduced to the different word categories and structures: nouns, determiners, verbs, pronouns, noun phrases, verb phrases, adverbs, adverb phrases, prepositions, prepositional phrases, adjectives, adjective phrases, auxiliaries, etc. There is a focus on functions of the principal categories in English and the main syntactic operations. There is also a focus on the constituents of noun phrases, verb phrases, prepositional phrases, adjective phrases, and adverb phrases.
