Free-For-All Structure of the class
Self-paced
Modern application to daily lives.
Interesting topic(s)
Learning about learning
4. MY THOUGHTS ON LEARNING
PREFERENCES
• Before class, I thought these preferences would stick
with you forever and never change.
• I realized that they can possibly change, even
temporarily
• This happens when you collaborate with other
people who have the opposite preference to yours.
• Example: A visual learner working with 3 strong
verbal learners.
5. MY LEARNING PATHWAY
• To get a deeper number of a variety of
technologies, I chose the learning warrior pathway.
• All of the technologies were interesting—it made
me curious.
• So, I did all of the quizzes on them.
• Utilizing the technologies made me believe I
accomplished the pathway essentials.
6. SUMMARY OF THE ACTIVITIES I
COMPLETED
• Level 1 Activities: Broad understanding of the
technology—identification of basic features
• Level 2 Activities: Sharing knowledge and
experience with the technology
• Level 3 Activities: Deeper understanding of the
technology by using and evaluating them.
• Activities helped me gauge my interest for each
technology.
7. TOP 3 TECHNOLOGIES I EXPLORED
•
•
•
•
“Learning by doing”
iPods
iPads
Social Networking
8. MY EXPERIENCE WITH USING
DIFFERENT TECHNOLOGIES
• iPod + iPad addressed my visual learning
preference, especially when interactive
• iPad worked best for my visual learning preference
because it integrates every technology
• Social networking addressed reflective learning
preference.
• Games+MMOG’s was the most surprising
technology.
9. INTEGRATING PHYSIOLOGICAL
ASPECTS OF LEARNING
• Explored and modified sleep, diet and exercise.
• Goal was to have energy for classes.
• Knowing about physiological aspects, helped
manipulate favorable results.
• Social networking facilitated integration of exercise
into learning practices.
• Helps advance well-being and self-development.
10. USING WHAT I LEARNED AFTER THIS
CLASS
• Primary take away from class were learning
strategies on retaining information
• Can be used in jobs where there are “codes” to
memorize.
• I will continue to use iPods and iPads because they
have access to all other technologies
• I will continue to manipulate favorable physiological
responses with the knowledge I learned from this
class.
11. MY EXPERIENCE AS A LEARNING
WARRIOR
• I feel that I have opened my perspective to a lot of
different technologies.
• Understood technologies I thought were useless or
didn’t contribute to learning.
• Motivated me to try new things.
• Overall I feel like I had an effective yet valuable
experience as a learning warrior.
• Like a real warrior.
Editor's Notes
Hello, my name is Dominic Bati and this is a presentation on the Synthesis Quest for ITEC 299.ITEC 299 Is known is How 2 Lrn On Ur iPod but doesn’t necessarily focus solely on iPodsWhat it focuses on is applying different technologies and using them to essentially learn.
(Transition from slide 1) I didn’t really know how to “Learn with my iPod” so I gave it a shot because the 3 units definitely wouldn’t hurt.I was motivated to take this class because I researched a little about it and found out about the free-for-all structure of the class. This basically meant that you can do the assignments at your pace with the only driving force being 3 intervals of deadlines.Another motivating factor was that it centered on a modern topic so I knew that I can use and continue to use the material for later classes. It was also an interesting topic based on the department. The last point is that I wanted to take this class to essentially learn how to learn. It was a topic that we barely went over in high school or other college courses.
We started off the class taking a survey to determine our personal learning preferences. There are a total of eight values. The scores on the corresponding value, determines my preference for that value. For the Top one, it shows that I scored a 7 for reflective learning which means that I have a moderate preference to reflective learning. That essentially means that I’m the type of person who learns by thinking through new information and I periodically have to review or “reflect” on the information to retain or understand it.For the 2nd one, it shows that I scored a 7 for sensual learning which means I have a moderate preference to sensual learning. This means that I like to learn basic facts and not theories and I also prefer to solve problems with clear methods and I tend to prefer small details of things. For the 3rd one, it shows that I scored an 11 on visual learning which means that I have a strong preference to visual learning. This essentially means that I learn better with the use of images or graphs, charts, or diagrams. For the last one, I scored a 3 on sequential learning. For this one, it means I am quite balanced between the two but I am skewed toward sequential learning which means I like learning in steps and processes or in some kind of order.
- My thoughts on learning preferences have changed slightly since the beginning of class. - In the beginning of class, I thought that the preferences weren’t flexible and more fixed. - What I realized is that preferences can change if you are around people with opposing preferences. - For example, if a person who has a very strong preference for visual learning is placed in a group with people who have a strong preference for verbal learning, the learning preference will be balanced and notskewed. In this case, the visual learner will not be at an “11” and may downgrade to a “7.”
In the beginning of class the learning pathway I chose was the learning warrior because I wanted to get a deeper knowledge of a moderate number of technologies.I was intrigued at all the technologies and I wanted to explore the rest, so I did every quiz (level one activity) for each technology. The level 3 activities were the most valuable because it required you to make a plan to apply and use the technology, then reflect on how it worked or how it didn’t.By doing this, I believe I accomplished the essentials of the learning warrior pathway.
The activities I did helped me gauge my interest for each of the technologies. For the ones I were really interested in, I went deeper and did level 2 or level 3 activities with them. The level one activities helped me get a broader understanding of mobile/social/multimedia technology because they highlighted the basic characteristics, features, and examples. The level two activitiesreally worked well for learning with others because many forum posts asked for advice and many did give advice. For example, I gave a lot of iPad advice since I had one.The level three activities helped me get a deeper understanding of using the technologies because I actually used them and then evaluated my usage with the rubric of the assignments. Evaluating my usage really made me realize HOW and WHY the technology helps my learning so they ultimately contributed to helping me complete my pathway.
The top three technologies that I explored were iPods & Mp3 players, iPads & Tablets, and Social Networking sites.I explored them with the level one quizzes, the forums, and the level three plan and application to another class. In doing the level three quests I was essentially “learning by doing” which was very effective because I became productive for the class I used it in.By exploring it this way, I was also able to see if it worked well for me and if it addressed my learning preferences.
Both the technologies of the iPod and iPad accommodate my visual preference of learning because I can utilize information in the form of the images I see on the screen.I mostly used flash cards or graphic apps with them. The technologies that worked best for my learning preferences were definitely the iPad and iPod and that is because it has the ability to integrate all the other technologies into it. With both, you pretty much have access to screencasts, podcasts, certain games (especially app-based games) and social networks.Social networking also addressed my reflective learning preference because I could reflect on the information I get from people I collaborate with online.I was surprised at how well you could use Games as a technology for learning too!
I explored and modified my physiological aspects pertaining to sleep, diet, and exercise to improve my learningbecause I already knew that this is what lowered my energy levels when it came to paying attention in class or while studying. After improving sleep each night to 8 hours and replacing unhealthy foods with nutrient-filled foods, I noticed energy levels were higher due to my attentiveness in class and my improved performance while riding my bike.Knowing the response of the body when you change it in a positive way (more) sleep helps me manipulate the favorable results (higher energy levels). This is why knowledge of physiological aspects are important for learning.A technology that helped facilitate the integration of physiological aspects was social networking—in this case for exercise. I used a website called Strava to manage my time and collaborate with other cyclists about their workout and sometimes their diet and overall health.I’ve noticed that integrating physiological aspects of learning also advances well-being and self-development because it is rewarding to be healthy.
There were numerous learning strategies that I took away from this class, but the primary ones that stands out are strategies relating to retaining information because that is an area I struggle with most, but at the same time I can make it a strength because I feel like reflective learners can benefit from it if used right.I can use these strategies at a job to retain information like key words, job codes, facility codes, or other areas that essentially need to be memorized.I’m going to continue using the technologies I found were most interesting to me which were games, ipods, and ipads—but I just realized that social networking has a lot in store for me as it addresses my reflective learning preferences. I will use these technologies after this class because they are very interesting to me and they address my learning preferencesI will continue integrating physiological factors of learning into my personal learning practices by determining when I need to. Now that I know the complications of the neglected physiological aspects such as sleep and diet, I’d be able to pinpoint when I’m lacking something and I’d be able to tell myself to improve it since I’d anticipate the result.
My experience as a learning warrior has made me realized that I’ve been able to open my perspective to various technologiesSome of these were technologies that I thought were useless or had no contribution to learning before, such as microblogs or games. As a result, this ultimately encouraged me to try new things, such as social networking and changing my physiological aspects or trying new apps on the iPadMy overall experience with the learning warrior pathway is that I had an effective journey because I learned and applied things to real life.It is just like a warrior who is in training…they learn the basic things and get a deeper understanding of what they learned through real-life, daily experiences.
