Our Class Discussions This Semester!
1. Our Class Discussions this Semester!ENG 101 Spring 2010 Four Agreements of Courageous Conversation (Glenn E. Singleton and Curtis Linton)
2. 1. Stay Engaged Become morally, emotionally, intellectually, and socially involved in the dialogue; Do not let your heart and mind “check out” of the conversation (resist the natural inclination to move away from the conversation); Many white Americans have been conditioned to not talk about race.
3. 2. Speak Your truth It’s a good thing to take risks; Be honest about your thoughts, feelings, and opinions; If we are not, then the dialogue will be limited and ineffective.
4. 3. Experience Discomfort Speaking your truth might = tremendous emotion and fear so … Uncomfortable = real growth; Diversity education usually means not getting folks too upset or too uncomfortable; If division comes up, then it was already there in the first place.
5. 4. Expect and Accept Non-CLosure It’s normal for us to think about solutions or “fixes”; No quick fix for a problem that has been brewing for hundreds of years; Commit to an ongoing dialogue; The more you talk, the more you learn!
