Therapy For Clinical Depression
Depression is a feeling of sadness, hopelessness, and irritability. Depression interferes with a
person's daily living because they feel they cannot change their behavior or come out of their
depressed state. Clinical depression is diagnosed when five or more symptoms are present for at
least two weeks. The symptoms are: persistent sadness, anxiousness, or empty mood; loss of interest
in hobbies or activities, difficulty sleeping or waking, appetite changes and/or unwanted weight
changes, feelings of guilt, worthlessness, and/or helplessness; thoughts of death or suicide, and
suicide attempts. If someone is having thoughts that life is not worth living or ideas of harming
themselves, it is not necessary to wait the full two weeks for symptoms to be present. People should
seek help immediately if the symptoms are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Therapy helps by discussing potential sources for one's depression and also finds solutions to
overcome a depressive state. In order for therapy to be beneficial, the client must actively participate
by sharing personal information with the therapist and genuinely want to help himself or herself
better. In addition, there are numerous medications available to help treat depression, including
Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, and Luvox. People suffering from depression should seek help immediately
rather than attempting to handle it themselves or assuming it will eventually go away. These two
methods have actually been proven to make the depression worse. College students are especially
vulnerable to depression because of its' high–stress environment. Prolonging treatment for
depression can severely negatively affect students both academically and socially. College students
tend to try "self–medication," such as binge drinking and substance abuse. Both practices are
unhealthy and worsen depression. Many college campuses have student health centers or counseling
centers to assist students in overcoming

Clinical Depression In Adolescents
The rate of adolescents with clinical depression, particularly among young teen girls and young
women, has increased over the decade ending in 2014. Major depressive episodes, also known as
clinical depression, occur when someone develops a depressed mood or a loss of interest or pleasure
in daily activities along with other depressive symptoms consistently for at least two weeks. For this
study, researchers gathered data from the 2005–2014 National Surveys on Drug Use and Health on
teenagers and young adults to see how many "depressing episodes" occurred in the previous year(s).
Overall, 176,245 teenagers aged 12–17 and 180,459 adults aged 18–25 were involved in the annual
study between 2005–2014. Participants were informed on the symptoms

Psychotherapy As A Treatment For Clinical Depression
Psychotherapy as a Treatment for Clinical Depression Three hundred and fifty million people in the
world every year, suffer from depression, a disease that causes feelings of severe despondency and
dejection.(Depression Statistics) Depression causes severe symptoms that affect one 's thinking,
feelings, and ability to handle daily life. Psychotherapy and medication are the two main treatments
for clinical depression. Although medication is the most advertised cure for depression, studies have
shown that medication does not cure the underlying problem and does not have many long term
effects.(Psychotherapy to Treat Depression) On the other hand, antidepressants also come with
many side effects and withdrawals from them may be difficult. ... Show more content on

A therapist from a home based counseling program came to help Angela deal with her depression.
Angela did not feel like she needed counseling but participated to get welfare benefits, and for the
first few weeks Angela was distant and had very protective way about her. About six weeks into the
sessions the counselor came onto the porch and found Angela crying and shaking. "My brother
molested me as a child and I got him put into jail", said Angela. Angela felt responsible for taking
away her brothers freedom and for the rest of the session the therapist and Angela discussed why she
should not blame herself. The next week Angela showed the therapist a horror story that she was
writing. At the end of the first chapter, the story started naming characters and the therapist realized
that the protagonist was Angela and she was using this story as a way to describe what she had been
through and how she felt. During the next few weeks, the therapist used Angela's story and the
characters in it as a way to help Angela treat her depression. By figuring out how to fix the character
in the story's problems, the therapist was able to help fix the problems Angela was going through.
By the end of the therapy sessions, Angela was able to talk about her past problems freely and very

The Cause Of Clinical Depression
What causes depression? Factors such as prescription drugs, food allergies, abuse and weight gain
are responsible for mood swing.
Many people get blues at one time or another.
However, if these feelings begin to hamper your daily life and doesn't tend to die down, that could
be an indication of clinical depression.
This type of depression can be life–threatening, because it can cause people to lose the will to live.
At least, one in six people are believed to suffer from depression, and one in ten, from clinical
depression.
What causes depression
Depression cannot be traced to just one cause. It does vary from person to person and can be
triggered by a combination of things.
Most of the time, depression is first triggered by an unwelcome ... Show more content on

Foods that often cause allergic reaction and depression include milk and diary products, chocolate,
shellfish, tomatoes, apples, soy, peanuts, wheat, and corn.
Chemicals, and metals
Research has also found out that chemical pollutants and heavy metal contaminants may cause
depression and other sicknesses such as mental confusion, anxiety, hyperactivity, and gastric upset.
Chemicals that often cause depression are pesticide, paints, household cleaners, formaldehyde, and
benzene.
The heavy metals that are likely to affect mood include lead, arsenic, mercury, cadmium, and
aluminum.
Nutritional deficiencies
Nutritional deficiency is another important and often overlooked area that causes depression. You
may experience depression if blood levels of the following nutrients drop below a critical point.

Clinical Depression In Schools
Depression in Schools Childhood and teen years are the most important years in development. No
matter their home life, all children have gone through some type of depression. Depression is hard
on teens because of the stress of school and the decisions about the rest of their life and career.
There are different types of depression. Bi polarness, major depression, and unspecified depression.
Talking to an adult, counselor, or teacher, although it may seem like they don't know what you're
going through, may be the best option for help. Depression is a mood disorder that causes persistent
and intense feeling of sadness, hopelessness, anger, and loss of interest lasting more than a couple of
weeks. It is usually caused by anxiety or anger towards a negligent or absent parent(s).

These rates are very high for children. One fifth of females get depression between the ages fourteen
and seventeen, whereas ten percent of males get it in the same time frame. Since depression is so
high, everyone should have some experience or teaching on how to recognize and react with these
problems. Most students aren't aware that their friend is depressed and they don't understand so they
tease them. Teachers may see the students as just ignorant and they will discipline them in hopes of
changing their attitude. Both aspects lead the student to hate themselves more and it sends them
deeper into depression. The average depression time is eight months. This means that depression
isn't just something that goes away quickly. If people can be this desperate for a long period of time

Essay Defining Clinical Depression
Defining Clinical Depression People of all ages, backgrounds, and walks of life have felt depressed
and unhappy at some time in their lives. These periods of sadness usually pass after a short time, but
for some people, this feeling can remain for weeks, months, and even years. (1) This prolonged state
of unhappiness is called major (or clinical) depression and is characterized by a persistent sad or
"empty" mood, loss of interest in favorite activities, difficulty concentrating, and many other
symptoms. It is not simply a mental state but an illness that interferes with the way people feel,
function, and think.(2) What are the symptoms of Clinical Depression? The American Psychiatric
Association considers people to have clinical ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(3) While successful drug therapies which act on neurotransmitters in the brain imply that
depression is a neurobiological condition (4), the fact that such medications do not help about 20
percent of depression–sufferers seems to show that not all depression is due to such imbalances.
Rather, depression is not caused by one single factor; it is most often caused by many different
things. Genetics, biochemical factors, medicines and alcohol, developmental and other external
factors, and relationships, marriage and children all have effect on the development of clinical
depression. (5) The strongest hypotheses on the pathways to depression are in decreases in the
activity of specific neurotransmitters, or the overactivity of certain hormonal systems. (3) Who
suffers from Clinical Depression? More people suffer from depression than you might think. People
of all ages, backgrounds, lifestyles, and nationalities get clinical depression. An estimated 35 to 40
million Americas living today will suffer from major depression at some time during their lives. (4)
This is about 13 to 20 percent of all Americans. (1) About half of these individuals will experience
recurring depression. (3) Despite being what authorities call "the nation's leading mental health
problem" (6), depression is often misdiagnosed or undiagnosed, and therefore not treated. (4) Often
as a result, about 25 percent of these people attempt suicide to end their

Adolescent depression is a major public health concern. I Need a Lighthouse states that
"Approximately 20 Percent of teens will experience depression before they reach adulthood."
Depression is a clinical illness that is an outcome from emotional detachment which typically results
from traumatic experiences. "There's a vast difference between 'feeling depressed' and suffering
from clinical depression. The despondency of clinical depression is unrelenting and overwhelming.
Some people describe it as 'living in a black hole' or having a feeling of impending doom. They can't

It is known that antidepressants cause both known and unknown adverse effects. The physician and
patients need to agree that both the risks and benefits of the antidepressants must be balanced. When
a patient goes to the doctor's office they expect to receive a prescription and a doctor wants to help
the patient so sometimes he might write a prescription without really considering the full benefits,
dangers and other options. According to the research that Mayo conducted, 4% of the patients in the
study that was taking antidepressants had increased suicidal thoughts compared to 2% taking
Placebo. Medication given to diagnosed people with depression, is just a bandage. It is just covering
up the problem and in some cases making the problem even bigger. Research shows that 27% of

Distinguishing Between Normal Teenage Angst and Clinical...
It is not uncommon to hear stories about a teenager experiencing mood swings and rebelling against
those in authority. Nor is it uncommon to experience general sadness or anxiety in high school and
college. However, it is often difficult to tell the difference between normal teenage angst and clinical
depression. It is not commonly known that there has recently been a staggering rise of depression in
adolescents. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, one in twelve adolescents in the
United States suffer from depression, which is 8.3 % of the teenage population. In order to combat
the problem of adolescent depression, it is essential that parents take an active role in their
adolescent's life by both acknowledging and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One theory, argued by Peter Gray, a research psychologist at Boston College, is that the rise in
adolescent depression is due not only to the adolescent's feeling of lack of control over his or her life
but also a shift from intrinsic goals to extrinsic goals. Gray explains that teenagers in our modern
society do not feel as if they have control over their lives even though it may appear that we do have
more control over factors such as disease and wealth. Julien Rotter's questionnaire is used to
measure a person's sense of control, and Gray points out that the scores of modern day indicate that
the average young person in 2002 was more "external" than were "80% of the young people in the
1960's." This means that teenagers today have the attitude that what is supposed to happen will,
indicating a sense of lack of control over a situation, which is one of the main reasons depression
and anxiety occur. (Gray, Dramatic Rise) Along with this idea, Gray references Jean Twenge when
he argues that there has been a shift from more personal goals to more worldly goals in teenagers.
Twenge found that more adolescents are forming extrinsic goals, or "those that have to do with
material rewards and other people's judgments" rather than intrinsic goals which have to do with
"one's own development as a person." Because

Reacting this way may turn out to be clinical depression which affects the daily life of millions
rather than just a bad case of blues. To some people, depression is just a word, but to others it is a
life ruiner because it can result in increased work absence, a short–term disability,or even a
decreased productivity. Fortunately, there is a variety of treatment options.
Many people define depression as being heartsick and sad all the time when in reality there is much
more to that interpretation. Because little is known about this illness, Sahrish Ahmad goes into great
detail about the true meaning of depression and states that "it is a debilitating disease that sucks
pleasure out of the lives of its sufferers and shrinks their self–esteem to almost nothing."(Ahmad). In
other words, it is a constant and overwhelming feeling of helplessness. Some question if this
disorder is capable of actually killing a victim who suffers from it. Indeed it can. Ahmad expresses
his point of view by asserting that "high depression can go as far as a killer disease."(Ahmad). With
this being said, the personal, social and occupational lives suffering from depression have the
possibility of becoming defective. Victims of this illness can go beyond imagined thoughts and
actually take their own life because they would much rather be dead instead of having to go through
what they

Theories Of Clinical Depression
Globally, around 350 million people suffer from clinical depression. However, its causes remain
largely unknown. There are many theories that attempt to explain the cause of depression, but none
of them fully explain the disorder. In this essay I will explain the assumptions made in the
psychoanalytic and biological theories around depression.
The field of psychoanalysis, founded by Sigmund Freud, views mental conditions and disturbances
– depression included – as coming from often forgotten childhood experiences rooted into one's
subconscious. One of Freud's early psychoanalytic theories regarding depression was the child
"turning guilt–ridden anger on the self," meaning that a child's dissatisfaction with their parental
relationships would clash with their desire to impress their parents, causing them to internalise their
bitter and dissatisfied emotions. This internalisation would lead to self destructive behaviours and
depressive symptoms later in life. Several similar theories have been raised ... Show more content

Events such as the death of a loved one, financial instability, or general emotional distress all
statistically increase one's likelihood of developing depression, and both of the theories that I have
discussed fail to account for the influence that these current events may have on an individual's
mental health. The psychoanalytical approach focuses only on early childhood, while the biological
approach does not take any life events at all into account. Psychoanalysis assumes that depression is
rooted in early childhood with little evidence to support this assumption. The biological approach,
while still erasing the effect that life events can have on depression, provides much more valid
scientific evidence to strengthen its theories. Because of this, I believe the biological approach to be
a more sound

Signs Of Clinical Depression
Have you ever felt sad, guilty, moody? These could all be signs of depression. Being sad and
actually having a problem with your feelings and thoughts are two different things. People are sad
all the time but when someone is just never enjoying things anymore or never in a good mood they
could be depressed.
Depression actually comes from a latin word deprimere which means press down, or also known as

Most diseases have a specific medical cause, depression is more complicated. It is a combination of
biological, like genes, brain chemistry, and hormones. It can also involve environmental change,
such as moving to a new school, parents arguing or getting divorced, or a close friend or family

Intro
Everyone at various points in their lifetime experiences periods of sadness and grief. However,
major depressive disorder or clinical depression lasts for much longer and is more serious. It is a
mental disorder that involves, among other things, low mood, low self–esteem and a lessened
interest in activities that used to be enjoyable. It can be accompanied by physical changes, including
lack of appetite, aches, pains, insomnia and fatigue. Without treatment, depression can have tragic
consequences, with up to 15% of people who suffer from depression committing suicide.

men, twice as much so. Depression costs the UK's economy £5.8bn a year, without ... Show more

In this study 847 New Zealanders were looked at. 17% of them had two short alleles, 31% had two
long alleles and 51% had one of each. They were followed from birth to 26 and when they were 26
years old it was identified if they had had one or more multiple stress events and after that, if they
had developed depression. The research showed that patients with two short alleles were the most
likely to be depressed, with one long and one short they were moderately likely to be depressed and
those with two long alleles mostly did not develop depression. Moreover, from those who did go
through stressful events (debt, unemployment family bereavement and others), 4% of those with
long alleles contemplated suicide whereas 11% of those with two short alleles contemplated it. The
theory suggested that would explain this is that those with the long alleles produce more serotonin
and as a result, they can use more serotonin to help process mood. Those with the short alleles have
less serotonin and so they are less able to cope with stressful situations, and are more likely to
develop depression thereafter. The possible applications of this research are varied. There is
potential for the presence of the short allele to be used as an indicator for higher risk of suffering
depression. However, there are a number of factors that need to be taken into account first. For
example, there are many other genes that have been linked with depression and the role of
environment in causing depression is still largely unknown. Therefore, it cannot be definitively said
that the presence of the short alleles is a definite indicator of increased risk of depression because
there may be another gene that counteracts this effect in some people. Moreover, the experiment was
carried out on a concentrated region, only in New Zealand. With genetics, there are large differences
in genes and how they interact with each other in different

Although research on them is exiguous, it has been discovered that monoamine, or neurotransmitter,
depletion directly affects chemical imbalances. With reduced monoamine levels, one's mood can
easily be affected. One study conducted by Jose Delgado discovered that those being treated for
depression with antidepressants exhibited depression–like symptoms again due to their reduction in
monoamines. (Delgado et al., 1990, 1993) However, serotonin and norepinephrine appear to play a
larger role in contributing to depression. Patients being treated for depression are often prescribed
medication to boost serotonin. Delgado's study further concluded that diminishing serotonin resulted
in patients relapsing into depression even after being treated for it with antidepressants. Evidently,
the amount of serotonin directly affects depression and relapsing into

"Recent surveys indicate that as many as one in five teens suffers from clinical depression"

majority of the time it is impossible to tell, meaning there is a possibility that there are more people

the signs of depression, self harm, and suicide in students and high risk populations in order to help
find ways to improve our mental health system.

On the HealthyPlace website, they say, "Frequently, untreated depression and other mental health
challenges create an environment of despair that leads people to cope with these challenges in

lead them to self destructive behavior (Abbondanza). This does not mean that males do not self–

These statistics are way too high and something needs to be done about it. Many people hide the fact

There are likely to be many more teenagers hurting themselves than we know because it is not being

In those moments of tragedy, loss, struggle, stress, etc., it is normal to feel and become depressed.

could possibly be clinical depression. When asked, most individuals assume depression is when
someone is so sad to the point of taking their own life, but depression is more than just that
assumption. Depression is defined as a "mental state characterized by a pessimistic sense of
inadequacy and a despondent lack of activity which reflects a sad and/or irritable mood exceeding

and being more irritable in general are common symptoms. Many delinquents and runaways are just

They begin responding poorly to people, going into a quiet, unhappy state. There are people that
suggest that these symptoms are not a result of depression, but laziness. Depression is not something
you simply "snap out of", but a real, crippling problem. Unfortunately this harmful myth is very
widespread, and only serves to hurt those that suffer, not encourage them. No one can just stop being

that the depressed person doesn't need help, possibly causing them to not seek treatment. Like

The Cause Of Clinical Depression
Depression is not an illness. It is an excuse for being contemptuous and miserable. Today, the word
"depression" is so passively thrown around and completely exaggerated. Clinical depression is
defined as "A mood disorder causing a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest." (Webster).
Most people who say they have it, really do not! It is typical to just say that they are depressed when
they are going through a difficult time in their lives. They use it as a short term solution compared to
a long term opportunity to solve the way they are feeling. Lately, there has been an uprise in the
number of "depressed" college students. The word depression has suddenly changed from a clinical
disease to a way into the "in crowd". College students ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

many opportunities to get the help they need with time management, school work, or any other
aspect of the college life. If a student is feeling stressed or having a bad day, help is right around the
corner. Students should not throw around the term depression as if it is not a serious disease. Some
people do suffer greatly from it and strive to live a healthy lifestyle every day. Perhaps instead of
resorting to the worst, students should take a step back and realize where they are and how great
their life actually is. Even if a student is having a bad day, it could be worse. An anonymous person
once said, "Be thankful for the bad things in life. They open your eyes to see the good things you

same affliction of adolescent psychosis is illustrated in one of Shakespeare's most famous play,

"low–life" (Shakespeare 129), a "lily–livered man..., and an uncourageous rascal" (Shakespeare
131), similar to Craig. Another parallel is that Hamlet sees "no future ahead for [himself]"
(Shakespeare 179) and is fixated on "dying" (Shakespeare 139). Everyone around him just thinks he
is insane; consequently, this "treatable disorder... goes unrecognized" ("Depression in Young
People" 3), because the people in his life have failed decipher his symptoms of clinical depression.
When Hamlet's "depression [is] left untreated, [it] can be dangerous, even fatal" ("Morbidity" 1),
which is shown to be true as he spirals into a further state of lunacy, leading to his death. Though
Hamlet 'lived' 400 years ago, he had suicidal ideation, erratic behavior, self–hatred, anxiety, and a

Simmons, 1985, as cited in Antonuccio, Danton, & DeNelsky, p. 574). The concept of 'harmful
dysfunction' advanced by Horwitz and Wakefield (2007) describes two key components of clinical
depression: a dysfunctional mechanism and the dysfunction being harmful to the individual (as cited
in, Parker & Paterson, p.405). This paper explores the following questions: what does research
indicate about clinical depression and what are the implications for treatment? Reviews are
presented in regards to the emergence of depression and psychotherapy versus medication to treat
clinical depression. Considerations are briefly discussed and the research paper will conclude with
an interpretation of the critical points.

Personal Narrative: My Experience With Clinical Depression
There are times in everybody's life when they feel down, worthless, or question themselves to a
point of insecurity. With clinical depression, these feelings of insignificance are perpetual rather
than circumstantial. I've been diagnosed with major depressive disorder, and it is an ongoing conflict
in my life that I have to work towards overcoming. Often times I used to question the significance of
day–to–day activities, leading to more questions on what matters in life, overwhelming myself with
the concept of why we are alive. There was a point where I, along with my relationships and
aspirations, felt futile, as I believed anything so uncertain and temporary served no purpose when
the emotional aspect is removed. I would isolate myself because I felt that any interaction was a
burden, living slowly and absently. I stopped trying in everything I did, and my depression worsened
during this time. I reached a low point in April of my sophomore year and was admitted into a
mental health facility ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

myself and my surroundings, taking into account the impact I have on others and assessing
situations more thoroughly. Finally, living with depression has inspired my passion for learning. I
want to understand all aspects of material, developing concepts, ideas, and philosophies, and simply
know as much as I possibly can. Without the experiences that living with depression has brought

Therapy For Treating Clinical Depression

  • 1. Therapy For Clinical Depression Depression is a feeling of sadness, hopelessness, and irritability. Depression interferes with a person's daily living because they feel they cannot change their behavior or come out of their depressed state. Clinical depression is diagnosed when five or more symptoms are present for at least two weeks. The symptoms are: persistent sadness, anxiousness, or empty mood; loss of interest in hobbies or activities, difficulty sleeping or waking, appetite changes and/or unwanted weight changes, feelings of guilt, worthlessness, and/or helplessness; thoughts of death or suicide, and suicide attempts. If someone is having thoughts that life is not worth living or ideas of harming themselves, it is not necessary to wait the full two weeks for symptoms to be present. Therapy helps by discussing potential sources for one's depression and also finds solutions to overcome a depressive state. In order for therapy to be beneficial, the client must actively participate by sharing personal information with the therapist and genuinely want to help himself or herself better. In addition, there are numerous medications available to help treat depression, including Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, and Luvox. People suffering from depression should seek help immediately rather than attempting to handle it themselves or assuming it will eventually go away. These two methods have actually been proven to make the depression worse. College students are especially vulnerable to depression because of its' high–stress environment. Prolonging treatment for depression can severely negatively affect students both academically and socially. College students tend to try "self–medication," such as binge drinking and substance abuse. Both practices are unhealthy and worsen depression. Many college campuses have student health centers or counseling centers to assist students in overcoming ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Major depressive episodes, also known as clinical depression, occur when someone develops a depressed mood or a loss of interest or pleasure in daily activities along with other depressive symptoms consistently for at least two weeks. For this study, researchers gathered data from the 2005–2014 National Surveys on Drug Use and Health on teenagers and young adults to see how many "depressing episodes" occurred in the previous year(s). Overall, 176,245 teenagers aged 12–17 and 180,459 adults aged 18–25 were involved in the annual study between 2005–2014. Participants were informed on the symptoms ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Angela did not feel like she needed counseling but participated to get welfare benefits, and for the first few weeks Angela was distant and had very protective way about her. About six weeks into the sessions the counselor came onto the porch and found Angela crying and shaking. "My brother molested me as a child and I got him put into jail", said Angela. Angela felt responsible for taking away her brothers freedom and for the rest of the session the therapist and Angela discussed why she should not blame herself. The next week Angela showed the therapist a horror story that she was writing. At the end of the first chapter, the story started naming characters and the therapist realized that the protagonist was Angela and she was using this story as a way to describe what she had been through and how she felt. During the next few weeks, the therapist used Angela's story and the characters in it as a way to help Angela treat her depression. By figuring out how to fix the character in the story's problems, the therapist was able to help fix the problems Angela was going through. No matter their home life, all children have gone through some type of depression. Bi polarness, major depression, and unspecified depression. Talking to an adult, counselor, or teacher, although it may seem like they don't know what you're going through, may be the best option for help. Depression is a mood disorder that causes persistent and intense feeling of sadness, hopelessness, anger, and loss of interest lasting more than a couple of weeks. One fifth of females get depression between the ages fourteen and seventeen, whereas ten percent of males get it in the same time frame. Most students aren't aware that their friend is depressed and they don't understand so they tease them. Teachers may see the students as just ignorant and they will discipline them in hopes of changing their attitude. Both aspects lead the student to hate themselves more and it sends them deeper into depression. The average depression time is eight months. These periods of sadness usually pass after a short time, but for some people, this feeling can remain for weeks, months, and even years. (1) This prolonged state of unhappiness is called major (or clinical) depression and is characterized by a persistent sad or "empty" mood, loss of interest in favorite activities, difficulty concentrating, and many other symptoms. (3) While successful drug therapies which act on neurotransmitters in the brain imply that depression is a neurobiological condition (4), the fact that such medications do not help about 20 percent of depression–sufferers seems to show that not all depression is due to such imbalances. Rather, depression is not caused by one single factor; it is most often caused by many different things. Genetics, biochemical factors, medicines and alcohol, developmental and other external factors, and relationships, marriage and children all have effect on the development of clinical depression. (5) The strongest hypotheses on the pathways to depression are in decreases in the activity of specific neurotransmitters, or the overactivity of certain hormonal systems. An estimated 35 to 40 million Americas living today will suffer from major depression at some time during their lives. (4) This is about 13 to 20 percent of all Americans. Nor is it uncommon to experience general sadness or anxiety in high school and college. However, it is often difficult to tell the difference between normal teenage angst and clinical depression. It is not commonly known that there has recently been a staggering rise of depression in adolescents. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, one in twelve adolescents in the United States suffer from depression, which is 8.3 % of the teenage population. In order to combat the problem of adolescent depression, it is essential that parents take an active role in their adolescent's life by both acknowledging and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One theory, argued by Peter Gray, a research psychologist at Boston College, is that the rise in adolescent depression is due not only to the adolescent's feeling of lack of control over his or her life but also a shift from intrinsic goals to extrinsic goals. Gray explains that teenagers in our modern society do not feel as if they have control over their lives even though it may appear that we do have more control over factors such as disease and wealth. Julien Rotter's questionnaire is used to measure a person's sense of control, and Gray points out that the scores of modern day indicate that the average young person in 2002 was more "external" than were "80% of the young people in the 1960's." This means that teenagers today have the attitude that what is supposed to happen will, indicating a sense of lack of control over a situation, which is one of the main reasons depression and anxiety occur. (Gray, Dramatic Rise) Along with this idea, Gray references Jean Twenge when he argues that there has been a shift from more personal goals to more worldly goals in teenagers. Twenge found that more adolescents are forming extrinsic goals, or "those that have to do with material rewards and other people's judgments" rather than intrinsic goals which have to do with "one's own development as a person." Feeling helpless, hopeless, and worthless is understandable when going through a life struggle, a loss, and low self esteem. Reacting this way may turn out to be clinical depression which affects the daily life of millions rather than just a bad case of blues. To some people, depression is just a word, but to others it is a life ruiner because it can result in increased work absence, a short–term disability,or even a decreased productivity. Fortunately, there is a variety of treatment options. Many people define depression as being heartsick and sad all the time when in reality there is much more to that interpretation. Because little is known about this illness, Sahrish Ahmad goes into great detail about the true meaning of depression and states that "it is a debilitating disease that sucks pleasure out of the lives of its sufferers and shrinks their self–esteem to almost nothing."(Ahmad). In other words, it is a constant and overwhelming feeling of helplessness. Some question if this disorder is capable of actually killing a victim who suffers from it. Indeed it can. Ahmad expresses his point of view by asserting that "high depression can go as far as a killer disease."(Ahmad). With this being said, the personal, social and occupational lives suffering from depression have the possibility of becoming defective. Victims of this illness can go beyond imagined thoughts and actually take their own life because they would much rather be dead instead of having to go through what they ... • 21. Theories Of Clinical Depression Globally, around 350 million people suffer from clinical depression. However, its causes remain largely unknown. There are many theories that attempt to explain the cause of depression, but none of them fully explain the disorder. In this essay I will explain the assumptions made in the psychoanalytic and biological theories around depression. The field of psychoanalysis, founded by Sigmund Freud, views mental conditions and disturbances – depression included – as coming from often forgotten childhood experiences rooted into one's subconscious. One of Freud's early psychoanalytic theories regarding depression was the child "turning guilt–ridden anger on the self," meaning that a child's dissatisfaction with their parental relationships would clash with their desire to impress their parents, causing them to internalise their bitter and dissatisfied emotions. This internalisation would lead to self destructive behaviours and depressive symptoms later in life. Several similar theories have been raised ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Events such as the death of a loved one, financial instability, or general emotional distress all statistically increase one's likelihood of developing depression, and both of the theories that I have discussed fail to account for the influence that these current events may have on an individual's mental health. The psychoanalytical approach focuses only on early childhood, while the biological approach does not take any life events at all into account. Psychoanalysis assumes that depression is rooted in early childhood with little evidence to support this assumption. The biological approach, while still erasing the effect that life events can have on depression, provides much more valid scientific evidence to strengthen its theories. Because of this, I believe the biological approach to be a more sound ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 23. Signs Of Clinical Depression Have you ever felt sad, guilty, moody? These could all be signs of depression. Being sad and actually having a problem with your feelings and thoughts are two different things. People are sad all the time but when someone is just never enjoying things anymore or never in a good mood they could be depressed. Depression actually comes from a latin word deprimere which means press down, or also known as depressio. Most diseases have a specific medical cause, depression is more complicated. It is a combination of biological, like genes, brain chemistry, and hormones. It can also involve environmental change, such as moving to a new school, parents arguing or getting divorced, or a close friend or family member dying. However, major depressive disorder or clinical depression lasts for much longer and is more serious. It is a mental disorder that involves, among other things, low mood, low self–esteem and a lessened interest in activities that used to be enjoyable. It can be accompanied by physical changes, including lack of appetite, aches, pains, insomnia and fatigue. Without treatment, depression can have tragic consequences, with up to 15% of people who suffer from depression committing suicide. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In this study 847 New Zealanders were looked at. 17% of them had two short alleles, 31% had two long alleles and 51% had one of each. They were followed from birth to 26 and when they were 26 years old it was identified if they had had one or more multiple stress events and after that, if they had developed depression. The research showed that patients with two short alleles were the most likely to be depressed, with one long and one short they were moderately likely to be depressed and those with two long alleles mostly did not develop depression. Moreover, from those who did go through stressful events (debt, unemployment family bereavement and others), 4% of those with long alleles contemplated suicide whereas 11% of those with two short alleles contemplated it. The theory suggested that would explain this is that those with the long alleles produce more serotonin and as a result, they can use more serotonin to help process mood. Those with the short alleles have less serotonin and so they are less able to cope with stressful situations, and are more likely to develop depression thereafter. The possible applications of this research are varied. There is potential for the presence of the short allele to be used as an indicator for higher risk of suffering depression. However, there are a number of factors that need to be taken into account first. For example, there are many other genes that have been linked with depression and the role of environment in causing depression is still largely unknown. Therefore, it cannot be definitively said that the presence of the short alleles is a definite indicator of increased risk of depression because there may be another gene that counteracts this effect in some people. Moreover, the experiment was carried out on a concentrated region, only in New Zealand. With genetics, there are large differences in genes and how they interact with each other in different ... There are likely to be many more teenagers hurting themselves than we know because it is not being reported. Even so, there are roughly two million self–harming cases reported yearly ("Self Injury, Self"). One thing that educators and parents should take note of is that it has been shown that self– injury is more likely in developing countries, such as the United States and some European countries ("Self Harm, Self").
