The Four Seasons are known as Solar Festivals, in that they mark a seasonal change caused by the
Sun. The cross quarter days are marked by Fire Festivals and are usually celebrated as significant
agricultural festivals. Together the Solar Festivals and the Fire Festivals make up the Wheel of the
Year. The Wheel Of The Year, is often broken into eight festivals, whether they are the eight Asatru
Blots, Seasonal Festivals or Celtic Sabbats, and the observance of Solar energies at the solstices and
equinoxes and the Fire energies on the cross quarter days, is a common theme throughout the world.
The Festivals of the Wheel of the Year also represent the active and dormant states of nature, man
and agriculture. Each of the festival days was ruled by a governing deity, whether a God or Goddess,
with each region having its own associated deity. From planting to reaping to winter to summer... the
seasons were of great importance to our ancestors, for their very existence depended upon good
harvests, mild winters, and enough rainfall.

Halloween night, kids, and even adults (but not most) go walk around after dark in costumes
knocking on stranger's doors for food. But not any food. Candy. In the medieval times, kids used to
knock on doors and ask for food, money, and ale. Then the food given began a tradition and
inherited candy. So people all ages eat free candy for the whole night. Day of the Dead it's a little
different. They feast on meals, meals in which their ancestors loved, to remember them and keep
their presence inside of them. They eat al pan de muerto (bread of the dead) for the celebration, and
usually el mole (spicy chocolate sauce) because it's a traditional spanish sauce in which a lot of
people enjoyed. So as you now know, Day of the Dead and Halloween differentiate even by the
foods they eat.
Day of the Dead, Halloween, they're different right? Yes. They are very different from each other
even though they might have some similarities. There are many more things to compare between the
two holidays, but I just pointed out some of the obvious ones, colors/decorations, food, and the way
they emphasize

The tradition of dressing up for Halloween comes from a tradition that the Celt's had with Samhain.
Samhain was considered the time where the veil between the living and the dead was at its thinnest.
Many Celts believed that during this night, ghosts could pass through the veil into our world and
cause mischief, or attack people that they felt wronged them. In addition to ghosts, demons, witches,
and the fae could traverse into our world. The Celts would leave food and drink outside to appease
the spirits. The Celts would then dress up like the fae, ghosts, demons, and witches to hide from the

The Victorians lived in a highly scientific time with the Industrial Revolution taking place, and great
scientists like Charles Darwin coming up with the Theory of Natural Selection. The Victorians often
sought out solace in simpler things such as folklore and wanted to feel more connected to nature.
Instead of worrying about scientific innovations, the Victorians chose to lose themselves in
masquerades. Masquerades are elaborate parties where all in attendance where masks and costumes
to conceal their identities. Halloween was the night that most masquerades were hosted because it
was the first official holiday that fell after individuals returned from their summer homes. Costumes
during this time were inspired by different and exotic cultures. Many costumes were homemade
while some of the more wealthy society would hire tailors and seamstresses to take care of their
costume
