A Modern Venus
Andy Warhol's piece titled Details of Renaissance Paintings (Sandro Botticelli,
Birth of Venus, 1482) represents the face of the goddess Venus. This piece was made in 1984 as a
depiction of the face of Venus from the earlier painting The Birth of Venus by Sandro Botticelli that
was completed in 1482. The piece's present location is the Arkansas Arts Center, and its original
location is the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The piece is acrylic and
silkscreen ink on linen, and it can only be seen from one side because it is hanging on the wall.
The work is a colorful representation of the face of the goddess Venus as depicted earlier in The
Birth of Venus by Botticelli. However, Warhol uses more colors in his work. Venus's face and neck
are pink while her hair is black, red, orange, and yellow. In contrast, the background is a solid light
blue color. In Details of Renaissance Paintings, Venus's face and hair are emphasized and the
dominant elements are her hair because of the warm colors and her gaze.
Warhol uses implied lines to direct viewers' eyes around the artwork. The implied lines are the
strands of Venus's hair that direct viewers' eyes to the right bottom, middle, and top because the
strands are going in each of these directions. One

Madonna Of The Book Essay
Sandro Botticelli's composition known as "Madonna of the Book" illustrates important Renaissance
principles. The creation of this painting dates back to c. 1480 and is currently being maintained in
the Poldi Pezzoli Museum located in Milan, Italy. The medium used to complete this piece was
Tempera applied to a panel. This work uses idealization, lighting, and the elegant use of line to show
these principles that were emerging during the time.
Renaissance artists sought to replicate what made classic art so divine and one way they did this was
through idealization. In this piece, the Madonna, or also known as the Virgin Mary is seated in a
room, holding baby Jesus, and reading a book. The pair are presented in a faultless manner. This is
brought out by the softness of the Virgins skin as well as that of Jesus which portrays youth, and that
goes back to this idea of purity found in Greek principles. The Virgin's facial expression is seamless
in the fact that she is occupied by the book she is reading presumably the book of hours. Also,

The window in the back of room provides lighting, but there is a source of light emitting into the
scene from the left side of the painting. While this light source does achieve the illusion of
dimension, however, the significance of this light source is that the viewer gets to see the
relationship in body composition and facial expression between the two. Ultimately, this allows the
viewer to look out of the realistic setting and see the divinity that Botticelli is trying to show here.
Aside from the figures themselves notably the book Mary is reading is brought to our attention. The
lighting brings out the text on the page to the extreme that it is even legible. The lighting works in
hand with lines as well which aides our eyes in defining

Analysis Of Sandro Botticelli 's Venus And Mars Essay
Analysis of Sandro Botticelli's Venus and Mars
(1) Intro: Sandro Botticelli's Venus and Mars is a tempera and oil on poplar artwork that measures
69.2 x 173.4 cm and resides in the National Gallery of London (ARTstor). The painting consists of
the mythological figures of Venus and Mars as they lay in each other's company, surrounded by a
haunted forest landscape with mountains in the distance, and several satyrs playing around the two.
Venus and Mars dates back to the early Renaissance Neoplatonist period, where Botticelli was one
of the first to begin drawing on inspiration from mythology and the classical antiquity period in his
artwork, relating it to humanist thought using classical elements and symbolism. T: Sandro
Botticelli's Venus and Mars is a visual representation of the philosophical Neoplatonist thought
where "earthly beauty was thought to serve as a way to connect one innerly to the divine" which
emerged during the early Renaissance period.
(2) C: Sandro Botticelli painted Venus and Mars in the city–state of Florence, in 1483, during a time
when the early Renaissance began to flourish with the emerges of Humanist philosophy. In this
period, Florence accumulated a lot of wealth due to the steadily growing middle and upper class
merchants and bankers. This wealth led to a desire to enjoy and participate in the pleasures of life on
Earth, and not just exclusively focus on the afterlife. Politically, there was a great sense of focus on
freedom of the individual and

Research Paper On La Primavera
Seen as, "one of the world's most beautiful pictures," La Primavera was a pivotal image that
portrayed all kinds of traits and values expected from women. Primavera reflected the value of
antiquity by using Greek mythology to portray values and qualities expected from women during the
Renaissance, such as purity, romance, and marriage. Painted in 1482, Botticelli used Roman
mythology to depict the beauty of the spring, and the love and feminine qualities it brings. Antiquity
meant translating and connecting times to ancient Greece and Rome. La Primavera did this by using
Roman Gods and Goddesses and portraying them to reflect the acts of women in the Italian
Renaissance period. Women were expected to be poised, light, and grace. Sandro Botticelli, born ...

Sandro Botticelli Research Paper
Alessandro di Mariano Filipepi Botticelli, was born in 1445 in Florence, Italy. He was known as
Sandro Botticelli, a Florentine painter. He was considered a very important painter in the
Renaissance period. He practiced all kinds of genres and also collaborated with other talented artists.
He was often inspired and taught by others, it seems to me that he wasn't afraid to try new things.
He was always involved in his art and for that he got recognized, although it was mostly after his
death. Botticelli's brother was in charge to prepare him to be a goldsmith. Fra Filippo Lippi then
became his master and became Botticelli's greatest influence. He became Lippi's student at the age
of 14. As a master he taught Botticelli various skills on how to make frescos, panel paintings, and
how to maintain linear perspectives. Furthermore, at the age of 15, Botticelli had already learned
from his master, so he opened his very own workshop. In only a year he leaned he leaned as much

The painting was made from 1484–1486.Botticelli made the Venus represent beauty and perfections.
The things that show that are her long hair, nude feminine body, her long hair, which is covering her
private part, and her long body parts, like arms, neck, legs, and her waist. Zephyrus, holding Chloris,
they both blow Venus, whom is standing on a shell, towards Cyprus. The blowing also highlights the
beauty of the Venus. A nymph called Pomona is expecting the Venus and prepares to cover the
Venus with clothing. The story in the poem is that Venus was a Greek goddess that was born from
sea foam and that she is blown to her sacred Island. Being made during the middle ages it was
uncommon to see naked female. Botticelli actually had a model to make the Venus, he used
Aphrodite of Knidos to get an idea of how to make her look as feminine as possible, being a nude

Compare And Contrast The Renaissance Art And The Birth Of...
Artist of Renaissance created sculptures, murals, drawings and paintings. The goal of most
Renaissance at was to show the importance of people and nature, not just religion. The Renaissance
art tried to show people as lifelike and engaged in everyday activities. They also tried to capture the
world as it is. Renaissance art reflects a rebirth of interest in the classical world. This style arrived
late to Valencia.
At those days, they could not sculpt as classical artist because all sculpture of this time was
destroyed. However, painting was easier to copy than construction. Even though no was easy to
know how Roman painted so they have to use imagination. This is evident in the case of Birth of

Canvas also cost less than wood, but it was also considered to be less formal, which made it more
appropriate for paintings that would be shown in non–official locations. The theme of the Birth of
Venus was taken from the writings of the ancient poet, Homer. According to the traditional account,
after Venus was born, she rode on seashell and sea foam to the island of Cythera. In the painting we
see here, Venus is prominently depicted in the centre, born out of the foam as she rides to shore. On
the left, the figure of Zephyrus carries the nymph Chloris as he blows the wind to guide Venus. On
shore, a figure that has been identified as the goddess of spring waits for Venus with mantle in hand.
The mantle billows in the wind from Zephyrus' mouth. Botticelli paid much attention to her hair and
hairstyle. He gave Venus an idealized face, which is remarkably free of blemishes, and beautifully
shaded her face to distinguish a lighter side and a more shaded side. Of obvious importance in this
painting is the nudity

Art Analysis : The Birth Of Venus
Throughout art, a nude woman has aroused different kinds of emotions. A prime example is Sandro
Botticelli's, Birth of Venus. With this artwork, Botticelli went against the social norms of who to
depict as nude figures, and the content behind it. Nude figures were only reserved to male angels,
which was typical for the time period since art was still religious stories and figures. Nudes and the
content of an art weren't not for a female pagan goddess. Sandro Botticelli painted the artwork with
tempera, which is a fast–drying paint that was used to paint on the wall, when it was still being
made. These types of artworks were referred to as frescos. The artwork demonstrates how Venus, the
Roman goddess of sex, beauty, and femininity, was being pushed to shore, moments after her birth.
Botticelli, along with Donatello, started the ideology of Neoplatonism, which combined Biblical
stories with paganism beliefs. The Birth of Venus was successful in provoking the sexual appeal of
the audience, and creating a controversy by depicting Venus as a nude, while referencing to Mary,
the mother of Jesus. During the Italian Renaissance, many artists were adopting ideas of the Ancient
Greek and Romans. Some ideas were perspective, humanism, and how the human body is perfect
being. These ideas were what the Ancient Greek and Roman was known for, when it came to the
philosophy of their art. The philosophy was lost when the Romans were defeated by the Barbarians.
With this defeat, art

The Birth Of Venus By Alessandro Di Mariano Filipepi
Alessandro Di Mariano Filipepi, or his most prestigious surname Sandro Botticelli, was born on
March 1, 1455 in Florence, Italy. He would go to become of the most renowned painters of the early
Renaissance period in Florence. One of his most sought–after paintings was that of the "Birth of
Venus", where he depicted a Roman goddess and the poetic movement of illustration and humanism.
Botticelli would then go on to create over one hundred more paintings in his lifetime that are still the
subject of most art history classes, that relate to the Renaissance period. Botticelli's conviction of his
humanistic, poetic, and religious paintings is what made him the most influential and elaborate
painters of the Renaissance period.
Sandro Botticelli lived throughout his life in Florence, Italy until he died at the age of 65, on the
seventeenth of May 1510. He got his start by apprenticing for fellow painter Fra Flippo Lippi,
"whose delicate coloring can be seen in such early works as the Adoration of the Kings (National
Gall., London) and Chigi Madonna (Gardner Mus., Boston)" ("Sandro Botticelli" 1). In Botticelli's
earlier works he created magnificent paintings representing Roman, Greek, humanistic paintings
that focused on the metrical relationships between art, poetry, and myth. Unlike most artists in the
early Renaissance, Botticelli worked with different mediums, other than clay or wall paintings; he
worked with canvas, tapestry, furniture, and panels. Whereas most of the early

Comparing Venus In The Birth Of Venus And The Beautiful By...
As one of the most well–known and studied artists of the Italian Renaissance, Sandro Botticelli
changed many of the ideals of Renaissance painting. His devotion to the depiction of "the Beautiful"
resulted in rhythmic and poetic art that has left realism and logic behind in the quest for divine
beauty. Through abstraction and the divine, Botticelli "transposed onto a plane of pure spirituality
where no distinctions or fine shades are any longer possible, where all values are balanced out and
merged", transcending the natural to show sublime images of divine beauty. This paper will examine
two of Botticelli's paintings of Venus, in the Birth of Venus (Fig.1) and in the Primavera (Fig.2), and
will consider that the two pieces were created as sister works. Through analysis of ancient and
Renaissance texts, it shows that the two paintings, when considered together, they show key
concepts of Neoplatonic philosophy, specifically that of the two Venuses: Earthly and Heavenly.
Both the Birth of Venus and Primavera add to a narrative that implies a physical manifestation of the
derivation of divine beauty and love from Heaven to Earth.
In the Birth of Venus, Venus is painted nude in the center of the composition and she is standing in
contrapposto, posing as the Venus pudica. The Venus Pudica pose means that the goddess's hands
are over her breasts and genital area, giving Venus an opportunity to poorly attempt to maintain
some form of modesty, when in reality, the placement of Venus's hands brings more attention to her
nudity. Venus Pudica was a common pose among female nude sculptures of ancient greco–roman
culture, as in the second century BCE Medici Venus (Fig. 3). The Medici Venus sculpture was in the
collection of the Medici family, at the same time that Botticelli painted the Birth of Venus. As the
Medici family were his supporters, Botticelli must have been familiar with the Medici Venus.
Marsilio Ficino, leader of the Florentine Platonic movement, describes the Florentine Neoplatonic
conception of beauty in his Commentary on Plato's Symposium on Love, as the "splendor of the
divine goodness' and the "act or ray from [the Good] penetrating through all things. He also writes
that there is a constant circle of

The "Renaissance" was an important time following the Middle Ages. Ancient Greek and Ancient
Roman art styles and ideas were revived during this period of time. Extravagant and detailed
paintings were commissioned and featured mythological creatures from Greek and Roman culture.
It was similar to an artistic revolution. One of the most famous painters from this period was Sandro
Botticelli. Known for his detail included in his paintings, Botticelli went on to create paintings for
influential figures of the Renaissance and a few frescos for the Sistine Chapel. Sandro Botticelli is
the Renaissance Idol because he created a unique art style that was widely imitated by the time of

In one his most important works called 'Primavera" which featured Venus, the "Goddess of Love" in
a garden scene. (Grendler, pg. 102). One of Botticelli's most well–known art pieces is "The Birth of
Venus" which Botticelli painted in the year 1484. It features Venus rising out of the sea standing on
a shell in the nude surrounded by angels. The inspiration for this piece may have been based on a
poetry piece by Florentine poet Angelo Poliziano. The theme of the painting, the birth of love, may
cause many historians to believe that this painting was created for a wedding. (Grendler, pg. 103).
By the time of Botticelli's death in 1510, he was penniless and forgotten but his style was widely
imitated by other artists.
The second reason why Botticelli is the Renaissance Idol is that he created his own style of art.
Botticelli was born several generations after great artists such as Donatello and Masaccio.
("Encyclopedia of World Biography" pg. 439) Botticelli's was a typically traditional artist and

Analysis Of Botticelli And Da Vinci
Aesthetics give an inside look at what someone's likes and dislikes are. They clue in on a person's
emotions and how those emotions influence things around them. I have come to recognize that I
reflect my personal aesthetic into every piece of art I create. My aesthetic consists of clean lines,
attention to detail, and smooth blending. When I look at a piece of art, I want to be able to look at it
over and over and keep finding new little details each time. I want every stroke of a paintbrush to
mean something, to have a purpose. Works by Botticelli and Da Vinci showcase what I look for in a
work of art. Both artists changed the history of art with their abilities to capture a scene on a surface.
The Renaissance was an intriguing period; it was the rebirth of society and a time of experimenting,
which is why it is my favorite time period. Artwork from the Renaissance, especially works by Da
Vinci and Botticelli, appeals the most to my aesthetic because of the smooth blending, the
cleanliness of the piece, and the details.

Summary Of The Three Miracles Of Saint Zenobius
The work of art that I have chosen to write about, is the Three Miracles of Saint Zenobius (1500–
10). This painting is part of a bigger collection that depicts scenes from the life of Saint Zenobius.
It's sister pieces are spread out in different parts of the world, such places as, London, Dresden and
New York itself. The painter of this entire collection is Sandro Botticelli (1445–1510) and he
belongs to the Early part of the Renaissance. It is worth to note, that Botticelli was taught by Filippo
Lippi. Fra Filippo Lippi was a prominent artist of his time and he painted his work with great color
and as well with a narrative quality. Botticelli himself made a name for himself by his artistic style
and to his contribution to painting the frescoes of the Sistine Chapel and even though his most
notable work of art was the Birth of Venus that was created eighteen years prior to the Three
Miracles, this piece of work takes a different approach than his other paintings. The painting itself
resembles the Scenes from the life of Saint John the Baptist (1490/95) and it could be said that
Botticelli was inspired by it.
The medium of the painting was Tempera on wood and this was common practice use of painting
during the early part of the Renaissance. The painting itself tells a story. It shows three miracles that

The Renaissance (French for rebirth) was the historical period between the 13th and 17th century. It
was a time for cultural exploration which led to many intellectual advances and produced some of
the most famous art and literature that we know of today. (MindEdge, 7.06) The late 1400s was a
time when humanists, poets, and artists would gather to discuss classical era. Many, including
Lorenzo de 'Medici, sought to interpret the works of Homer and Hesiod and in turn, had them
rendered into works of art and poetry. The "Stanze per la Giostra" is based on and ode written by
Hesiod, and it is said that Botticelli closely followed the text when creating the Birth of Venus.
For this assignment, I will compare the Birth of Venus by Sandro Botticelli and the poem "Stanze
per la Giostra" by Angelo Poliziano. The theme of both of these pieces is that of Humanism, beauty,
and love.

The visual work that will be included is the Birth of Venus by Sandro Botticelli. The Birth of Venus
was created in 1486, it is a tempera on canvas and measure roughly 5ft x 9 ft. It represents the story
of the birth of Venus, the Roman goddess of Love. She was born from the seafoam and blown across
the ocean by Zephyrus in a seashell. She epitomizes the beauty standards of this time, beautiful, soft
and voluptuous. Botticelli used two different approaches in style when painting Birth of Venus. The
characters in the foreground represent the chiaroscuro style of painting, adding light and dimension
to the focal point of the piece while the background remains flat and uninteresting. Although there is
a lack of perspective in Botticelli's work, it does not take away from its overall appeal. (MindEdge,

The Birth of Venus is a painting by Sandro Botticelli, which she painted during the time of the

In The Birth of Venus, contrast can first be seen using the light and color elements of design by the
man and woman intertwined. It appears this woman is holding on to him. Compared to her, this man
has a darker complexion and darker hair. This leads her to stick out and the viewer can easily.
Heading over to the other side of the of this Botticelli's painting, the right side of Venus, a woman
dressed in a white dress stands. The use of color in this particular case to help create contrast is seen
in the woman's hand, as she is holding a red, sheet–like piece of material towards Venus. Contrast is
also seen under the woman's feet, where the ground consists of a deep, much more dark green in
comparison to her soft ivory skin. Moving back in and focusing on Venus, contrast can be seen on
the clam's shell. The lines are thicker on the clam's shell, perhaps in order to help the viewer be able
to easily distinguish which ridges in the shell has more depth in comparison to the beside ridges.
Value takes part in helping define the ridges in the simplest way – the ridges start of as a harsh and
dark color and then fade into a lighter color. Looking at Venus' skin, there is barely any space
between her upper thigh and the dark green grass that eventually runs into the water. The contrast
between these two aspects really help make Venus pop off the canvas; however, where there is a

the movement that saw profound change from medieval era culture. Humanism had a widespread
reach and consequently had a huge influence on cultural beliefs, philosophy, and art.
Humanism was a driving force that played a large part in carrying humanity from the medieval era
into the Renaissance. The humanistic philosophy on the value of human beings counters the belief
of the chain of being that was prevalent in the medieval era. The chain of being identified people as

Humanists essentially believed that individuals could determine their own fate. An good example
that demonstrates the importance placed on personal value in this era can be seen in Sandro
Botticelli's Adoration of the Medici. Botticelli went above and beyond what he was commissioned
to paint: he painted himself into the same frame of the family commissioners. The fact that he took
the time and intentionally painted himself in shows that people value themselves as individuals.
Furthermore, harboring a defining characteristic of the Renaissance, humanism itself drew from
historical Greek ideals. Humanism recognized the beauty of man as the pinnacle of perfection
mentally and physically. I believe the depiction of the perfect of the human psyche and body is
masterfully depicted in Michelangelo's David.

In 1481, Pope Sixtus IV summoned Botticelli and other prominent Florentine and Umbrian artists to

Sandro's contribution included the Temptations of Christ, the Punishment of the Rebels and Trial of

The Birth of Venus (Nascita di Venere) is a painting done by Florentine artist Sandro Botticelli in
1486. The painting depicts the moment the goddess Venus first emerges from the waters of the sea
and prepares to step onto the shore. Through linear techinques and artistic symbolism, the painting
not only depicts the story and narrative of the goddess Venus's birth but also seeks to exhibit the
many different types of love and adoration which surround the creation of life. The painting was a
commissioned work for the Medici Family of Florence, a powerful political and financial family
which would later go on to become an influential royal house for centuries. Throughout the painting,

This suggests that she is alive and moving with life and purpose.
Her naked form is a very rare element in the picture. During this time period, nudity was strictly
reserved to convey the idea of pure innocense or virginal qualities. Yet, Botticelli uses the nudity to
symbolize innocence and the untouched skin. Her form is soft and womanly and the seashell that
she rides on also reflects the thought that she is unblemished and untouched, much like a pearl. Her
hair is speckled with fine gold and is flowing naturally. It also serves to naturally cover her naked
body and suggest an innocent and almost Eve like quality. This also is a deliberate attempt at
recreating art from earlier Greek works which embraced the natural beauty of the body, especially
amongst the gods and goddesses of ancient Greece.
The fixation is set on her in the center of the painting due to the triangle of light used to create a
focal point for the viewer. Surrounding her on both sides are the linear equivelants of past and
future. From the left we see her creators helping her along with strength and the force of the wind.
To the right we see her handmaiden ready to usher her into the world, where she will be clothed and
no longer represent innocence. Both exhibit two very different forms of love and caring to Venus.

Botticelli
The title of this piece is The Birth of Venus created in 1486 by Sandoro Botticelli. The piece of
artwork originated in Uffizi, Florence. The name of the period style in which The Birth of Venus
was created was technically considered naturalism, however, Botticelli did not follow the entire
naturalist "rules." While Venus is depicted as natural looking, there are some aspects of the artwork
that fall into more of a contemporary style. For example, when looking at the portrait it seems as if
Venus is falling over, as her weight is shifted onto her left foot. The purpose of The Birth of Venus
was not entirely known or documented, however the piece showcases the goddess Venus coming out

The family came to wealth through their political power they gained during the time period. This
family supported the arts during this Renaissance culture period, which ultimately gave Florence the
hub of the Renaissance title. This family was most commonly known as the "House of Medici". It
has been noted that the Medici's asked Botticelli to paint The Birth of Venus for them, as a Medici
cousin, Lorenzo de' Medici was a friend of Botticelli. Sandro Botticelli was an apprentice under a
Medici artist, Filippo Lippi. Botticelli's studio was actually inside the Medici palace. Due to his
workspace within the Medici palace he eventually became friends with Lorenzo de' Medici. The
piece, The Birth of Venus definitely fit into the new liberal ideas of the Renaissance, as the piece
was noted as "controversial". His painting style changed over time, but The Birth of Venus remains a
piece to be analyzed to this day. The Renaissance was a time for new ideas, and the artwork remains
in Florence to this day.

Sandro Botticelli (1445 – 1510)
BIOGRAPHY
Sandro Botticelli, short for Alessandro di Mariano Filipepi, was born on the 1st of March 1445 in
The Republic of Florence which is now Italy. As a child he was easily bored in school and was
known for his hyperactivity and love of practical jokes. At about fourteen years of age, he was
withdrawn from his school and became an apprentice. He first worked for Maso Finiguerra as a
goldsmith for 3 years but soon became an apprentice to the artist Fillipo Lippi at around the age of
17. From Fillipo Lippi he learned to paint more intricately and with more detail.
He then worked with Antonio del Pollaiuolo, painting frescoes on Florentine cathedrals and
churches. At around 22 years of age he had his own workshop and was appointed to the
confraternity of Florentine painters in 1472. He then employed Filipino Lippi, son of Fillipo Lippi
as an apprentice. In 1481 it was requested by the Pope that he come to Rome to decorate the walls of
the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican, which had just been completed. He painted frescoes of the life of
Moses and the temptations of Christ. This was 30 years before Michaelangelo's famous ceiling
frescoes. He was very highly regarded around this time. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Symbolism In The Divine Comedy
Every arrangement of words seems to be an understatement when mentioning the success and
influence of Dante's epic poem The Divine Comedy. "An allegory is a story, poem, or picture that
can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning, typically a moral or political one" (Oxford
Dictionary). The Divine Comedy has provided inspiration for a large body of Western Art.
Originally published in the 14th century, his medieval poem written in the vernacular language of
the people has been the material for countless numbers of new editions containing illustrations. Each
artist finds their own clever way to express the messages in The Divine Comedy. The amount of art
dedicated to this epic poem is just as impressive as the poem itself.
Inferno appears to be the most popular of the three books, especially in the visual arts. "Dante's is a
visual imagination" (T.S. Elliot). Extremely detailed, the book describes Hell in the most powerful
visual terms. In the Inferno, Dante and the poet Virgil go to Hell where they witness the many
punishments for those who disobeyed God during their lives. Each layer of Hell, described in thirty–
three cantos and one introductory canto, is unique and fitting for the soul and the specific sin that
was committed. (Web Gallery of Art, 2017)
The most accurate representation of the structure of Dante's Hell, Sandro Botticelli is responsible for
The Map of Hell, which depicts the nine circles of Hell. Described as a cave, the Map of Hell on
paper is in the shape of a funnel with layers. Each layer is a level of Hell described by Dante. The
levels get smaller and smaller until, at the bottom of the cave or "funnel" one sees a satanic like
beast at the bottom or core. Starting with Limbo and ending with Treachery, each layer is drawn out
in magnifying detail. Sandro Botticelli was an Italian painter of the early Renaissance, the Florentine
was alive from around 1445 to 1510 (Florence Inferno, 2017). The man responsible for The Birth of
Venus, a masterpiece that is referred to in both historical context and in pop–culture, he was a very
decadent and detailed artist. His illustrations for The Divine Comedy were extremely devoted to the
text and very precise. They seem to reflect the recognizable

Vertical balance can be seen with the firm horizon line that separates a bleak landscape with a

Botticelli would hand grind a material that changes according to the light that it reflects, also known
as pigment. The powdered pigments are traditionally mixed with egg yolk which dries quickly and
stays firmly in place (Saitzyk, 245). During the Renaissance, fabric such as canvas were used
instead of the popular wooden panel. As tempera is a durable paint, canvas is a durable fabric made
of flax or cotton. In addition to painting, canvas is used to make items such as sails and tents which
require stability and resilience (Saitzyk, 135).
G. Alessandro Filippi‘s, also known as Sandro Botticelli's, youth remains a historical mystery. A
common story is that he was in poor health through his early childhood and then went on to be
trained as a goldsmith until his twenties when he began to paint. We do know, however, that
Botticelli apprenticed in the workshop of an artist by the name of Filippo Lippi.
In 1467, he was left by his master in Florence and apparently joined artistic careers with Verrocchio

Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder
The two works of art that I have chosen is the painting The Birth of Venus by Sandro Botticelli and
the poem Stanze per la Giostra by Angelo Poliziano. The Birth of Venus was created between 1484
and 1486 by Sandro Botticelli. It was created in the early Renaissance period and is currently
located in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy. Stanze per la Giostra was written between 1475 and
1478 by the Renaissance poet Angelo Poliziano. Its current location is the Metropolitan Museum of
Art in New York, although it is currently not on display. The Birth of Venus and Stanze per la
Giostra share many similarities as Stanze per la Giostra was Botticelli's inspiration for creating The
Birth of Venus. In The Birth of Venus, Botticelli has transformed Poliziano's words into a beautiful
work of art. These works of art share the theme of beauty. While Angelo Poliziano describes the
beauty of the goddess Venus in his prose, Botticelli has captured her beauty with his delicate brush
strokes. I will be comparing the theme of beauty between The Birth of Venus and Stanze per la
Giostra as well as connecting it to contemporary standards of beauty.

Can Beauty Stand The Test Of Time?
Can beauty stand the test of time? This is an age old question that can be examined by comparing
two works of art in different mediums from the Renaissance period and show how they share a
common theme of beauty. The first piece is an exquisite painting by Sandro Botticelli, titled Birth of
Venus, which shows a nude Venus entering the mortal world on a shell. The second work is a poem
by Publius Ovidius Naso (known as Ovid), called The Art of Beauty, that demonstrates why it is
important for Roman women to wear make–up and also directs how to apply the make–up. By
comparing exactly what the Roman people thought real beauty was and why they cared so much
about their appearance, to the way contemporary society views beauty, the question "Is beauty
timeless?", may finally be answered.
Sandro Botticelli was commissioned to paint "The Birth of Venus" in 1480, by the famous Medici
family who were particularly interested in mythology. The painting features Venus, the goddess of
beauty, being born into the world. Having emerged from the sea, she is standing on a shell and is
being blown to the land. Venus has smooth peachy skin, long flowing curls and is being received by
a magnificent cloak. Some say the model for Venus was Simonetta Vespucci, one of Botticelli's
lovers, who was known as the most beautiful woman in Florence. Venus symbolized ultimate beauty
and the Romans desired to look like her.

Also in the painting is Floras former self Chloris. Chloris is depicted having flowers come out of her

are painted in their greek sculpture form. This could be derived from his followings of Antonio
Pollaiuolo and Andrea del Verrocchio. Botticelli did make the figures more elongated and flowing
with their clothing and hair. The surroundings around the figures is also derived from mythology
and this can be seen by the myrtle tree in the background which belongs to Venus. Humanism can be
seen through the bodies of the figures in the picture, by showing detail in muscles on Mercury and
the half naked bodies the females depicted. Idealism is shown very much in this piece by how well
Botticelli sticks to the gods and goddesses story lines. The Primavera stands as the largest

Humanism In Art
Art: the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form
such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or
emotional power (Stevenson & Lindberg, 2010). Art takes many forms, such as paintings, drawings,
sculptures, and collages, and within each form exists different genres or classifications. The early
history of art, or art created within the fourteenth to nineteenth centuries, can fall into five major
periods: Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo, Romanticism, and Realism. The first of the five major art
periods, the Renaissance period, occurred between the thirteenth and sixteenth centuries and started
within Florence, Italy. It later spread throughout the rest of Europe. Renaissance art, aimed at
rebirthing classical culture, contains defining characteristics such as the theme of humanism, a more
realistic portrayal of subjects due to advances in perspective, and depictions of prominent religious
figures (Magic Web Solutions UK, 2015). In regards to the birth of humanism in art, "There is now
little doubt that the desire to render human likenesses in specific, rather than generalized or
idealized, terms began in Italy in the thirteenth century" (Grassi, 2011). Additionally, art often took
the form of oil paintings on canvas or plaster and statues typically crafted from marble and bronze.

The Italian Renaissance brought forth many iconic pieces that we are familiar with in modern day
culture. Sandro Botticelli painted one of the most recognized and appreciated works of art from that
era, The Birth of Venus (1482–1485). It is currently being displayed at the Galleria degli Uffizi in
Florence, Italy. The piece depicts a nude Venus, the goddess of love, elegantly standing upon a
seashell on the shore. The painting is thought to have been inspired by Ovid's Metamorphoses as
well as Angelo Poliziano's poem "Stanze per la Giostra" (1475–1478). His poem tells the story of a
goddess, born of the sea, being blown to shore by the zephyrs upon a seashell. There is a clear
thematic connection between the two pieces of humanism and beauty ideals because the poem
describes glorified divine beauty ideals while the painting displays personified mythical characters
who embody elegance and grace.
The relationship between the two works is that they were both commissioned by the Medici court.

The Madonna of the Rose Garden exemplifies the religious iconography from the artists' attention to
details such as the use of color, addition of religious symbols, and attention to the background.
Botticelli uses the color blue and red on the Virgin Mary's garment to show the symbols of healing,
love, and life. The cloth is quite flowy and covers her whole entire body. Both her red dress and blue
overcoat are lined with gold, showing beauty, grace, and holiness. Both the tie around her waist and
her veil are white, exemplifying the symbol of purity. She has a faded golden halo around the top of
her head, signifying her holiness and connection to God. On her lap, she is cradling a young child
who is seen as the Child of God. Jesus is draped in white cloth, showing purity as well. The child's
hand is reaching out toward the Virgin Mary's hand to eat a pomegranate. I am unsure of the
symbolic meaning of the pomegranate itself, but I know it is a crucial symbol in the religious
community and this work. Jesus also has a golden halo resting atop his head, showing a connection

paintings, showing the poor side of his personality. This can be shown in his painting called
"Nativity", as the painting is sharply defined and with cold colours.
Botticelli's style of painting had influenced many people and many artists who then became famous,
also changing the way people look at art. For example, Lippi, Filippino (1457–1504) was an Italian
artist, the son

The Birth Of Venus By Sandro Botticelli
Despite such controversy later on in art history the Renaissance period, which began in the 14th
Century and ended in the 17th Century, stayed very much within the 'comfort zone' of the ideals
created by the Greek's. It was greatly focused on a women's beauty which at this time was tied to
virtue, and a beautiful woman was thought to be a virtuous one. Sandro Botticelli was a famous
Italian painter of the early Renaissance period one of his most famous works being 'The Birth of
Venus' made around 1480s, depicts the Goddess Venus arriving on a shell to shore. The painting is
seen to be full of fertility and beauty. However, is such beauty worth painting if it is simply yet
again another representation of an unrealistic, idealised figure? The

The Birth Of Venus Sandro Botticelli
Sandro Botticelli, of the renaissance period, was best known for his painting "The Birth of Venus".
Lorenezo the great was the one who set the theme. Lorenzo had poet Angelo Poliziano to do the
verses of the Birth of Venus. Once this was set this was how Botticelli was able to paint the painting;
he translated the words of Poliziano into the painting. A myth of the Renaissance was that if a man
painted Greeks and Romans they were to be superior. That was formed by truth and wisdom. In
1486, Botticelli was commissioned to paint this painting by a member of the powerful Medici. In the
painting, the Goddess Venus is seen rising nude from the shore floating on a shell surrounded by
others. Venus was the Roman goddess of sex, love, fertility and

Sandro Botticelli In 1445, Alessandro di Mariano Filipepi Botticelli, was born in Florence, Italy
("Sandro Botticelli Biography | artble.com," n.d.). When first reading the lengthy name, most may
dismiss the artist as unrecognizable. However, the name the artist is most commonly referred to as is
Sandro Botticelli. There are very limited facts about Botticelli and his personal life, although it is
rumored that Botticelli had an attraction towards women he depicted through his paintings,
especially towards Venus in his painting The Birth of Venus ("Sandro Botticelli Biography |
artble.com," n.d.). There are mixed feelings about this claim, but it is certain that the artist was
accused and convicted for sodomy at one point in his life ("Botticelli Biography," n.d.). The facts we
know about his career and education are much more abundant and intriguing. To begin, Botticelli
kicked off his career at the age of fourteen when he decided to aid the prominent Italian artist Fra
Fillipo Lippo as his apprentice. Even though being an apprentice seemed like a small task at the
time, many believe that Botticelli was much more fortunate than other artists because he was able to
obtain a much higher education compared to other artists of the Renaissance ("Botticelli Biography,"
n.d.). Because of his apprenticeship, Botticelli inherited much from Lippo artistically, and, thus, was
able to work independently and

Details of Renaissance Paintings (Sandro Botticelli, Birth of Venus, 1482) (1984) by Andy Warhol acrylic and silkscreen ink on linen Viewed at Arkansas Arts Center Andy Warhol exhibition (October 28, 2008) A Modern Venus Andy Warhol's piece titled Details of Renaissance Paintings (Sandro Botticelli, Birth of Venus, 1482) represents the face of the goddess Venus. This piece was made in 1984 as a depiction of the face of Venus from the earlier painting The Birth of Venus by Sandro Botticelli that was completed in 1482. The piece's present location is the Arkansas Arts Center, and its original location is the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The piece is acrylic and silkscreen ink on linen, and it can only be seen from one side because it is hanging on the wall. The work is a colorful representation of the face of the goddess Venus as depicted earlier in The Birth of Venus by Botticelli. However, Warhol uses more colors in his work. Venus's face and neck are pink while her hair is black, red, orange, and yellow. In contrast, the background is a solid light blue color. In Details of Renaissance Paintings, Venus's face and hair are emphasized and the dominant elements are her hair because of the warm colors and her gaze. Warhol uses implied lines to direct viewers' eyes around the artwork. The implied lines are the strands of Venus's hair that direct viewers' eyes to the right bottom, middle, and top because the strands are going in each of these directions. One ... • 3. Madonna Of The Book Essay Sandro Botticelli's composition known as "Madonna of the Book" illustrates important Renaissance principles. The creation of this painting dates back to c. 1480 and is currently being maintained in the Poldi Pezzoli Museum located in Milan, Italy. The medium used to complete this piece was Tempera applied to a panel. This work uses idealization, lighting, and the elegant use of line to show these principles that were emerging during the time. Renaissance artists sought to replicate what made classic art so divine and one way they did this was through idealization. In this piece, the Madonna, or also known as the Virgin Mary is seated in a room, holding baby Jesus, and reading a book. The pair are presented in a faultless manner. This is brought out by the softness of the Virgins skin as well as that of Jesus which portrays youth, and that goes back to this idea of purity found in Greek principles. The Virgin's facial expression is seamless in the fact that she is occupied by the book she is reading presumably the book of hours. Also, looking at the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The window in the back of room provides lighting, but there is a source of light emitting into the scene from the left side of the painting. While this light source does achieve the illusion of dimension, however, the significance of this light source is that the viewer gets to see the relationship in body composition and facial expression between the two. Ultimately, this allows the viewer to look out of the realistic setting and see the divinity that Botticelli is trying to show here. Aside from the figures themselves notably the book Mary is reading is brought to our attention. The lighting brings out the text on the page to the extreme that it is even legible. • 5. Analysis Of Sandro Botticelli 's Venus And Mars Essay Analysis of Sandro Botticelli's Venus and Mars (1) Intro: Sandro Botticelli's Venus and Mars is a tempera and oil on poplar artwork that measures 69.2 x 173.4 cm and resides in the National Gallery of London (ARTstor). The painting consists of the mythological figures of Venus and Mars as they lay in each other's company, surrounded by a haunted forest landscape with mountains in the distance, and several satyrs playing around the two. Venus and Mars dates back to the early Renaissance Neoplatonist period, where Botticelli was one of the first to begin drawing on inspiration from mythology and the classical antiquity period in his artwork, relating it to humanist thought using classical elements and symbolism. T: Sandro Botticelli's Venus and Mars is a visual representation of the philosophical Neoplatonist thought where "earthly beauty was thought to serve as a way to connect one innerly to the divine" which emerged during the early Renaissance period. (2) C: Sandro Botticelli painted Venus and Mars in the city–state of Florence, in 1483, during a time when the early Renaissance began to flourish with the emerges of Humanist philosophy. In this period, Florence accumulated a lot of wealth due to the steadily growing middle and upper class merchants and bankers. This wealth led to a desire to enjoy and participate in the pleasures of life on Earth, and not just exclusively focus on the afterlife. Primavera reflected the value of antiquity by using Greek mythology to portray values and qualities expected from women during the Renaissance, such as purity, romance, and marriage. Painted in 1482, Botticelli used Roman mythology to depict the beauty of the spring, and the love and feminine qualities it brings. Antiquity meant translating and connecting times to ancient Greece and Rome. La Primavera did this by using Roman Gods and Goddesses and portraying them to reflect the acts of women in the Italian Renaissance period. Women were expected to be poised, light, and grace. The Medici's, a wealthy banking and political family based in Italy held a growing interest in Botticelli's work, and sponsored him. This was when he painted the world famous, "Primavera". • 9. Sandro Botticelli Research Paper Alessandro di Mariano Filipepi Botticelli, was born in 1445 in Florence, Italy. He was known as Sandro Botticelli, a Florentine painter. He was considered a very important painter in the Renaissance period. He practiced all kinds of genres and also collaborated with other talented artists. He was often inspired and taught by others, it seems to me that he wasn't afraid to try new things. He was always involved in his art and for that he got recognized, although it was mostly after his death. Botticelli's brother was in charge to prepare him to be a goldsmith. Fra Filippo Lippi then became his master and became Botticelli's greatest influence. He became Lippi's student at the age of 14. As a master he taught Botticelli various skills on how to make frescos, panel paintings, and how to maintain linear perspectives. • 11. Compare And Contrast The Renaissance Art And The Birth Of... Artist of Renaissance created sculptures, murals, drawings and paintings. The goal of most Renaissance at was to show the importance of people and nature, not just religion. The Renaissance art tried to show people as lifelike and engaged in everyday activities. They also tried to capture the world as it is. Renaissance art reflects a rebirth of interest in the classical world. This style arrived late to Valencia. At those days, they could not sculpt as classical artist because all sculpture of this time was destroyed. However, painting was easier to copy than construction. Even though no was easy to know how Roman painted so they have to use imagination. Canvas also cost less than wood, but it was also considered to be less formal, which made it more appropriate for paintings that would be shown in non–official locations. The theme of the Birth of Venus was taken from the writings of the ancient poet, Homer. According to the traditional account, after Venus was born, she rode on seashell and sea foam to the island of Cythera. In the painting we see here, Venus is prominently depicted in the centre, born out of the foam as she rides to shore. On the left, the figure of Zephyrus carries the nymph Chloris as he blows the wind to guide Venus. On shore, a figure that has been identified as the goddess of spring waits for Venus with mantle in hand. The mantle billows in the wind from Zephyrus' mouth. Botticelli paid much attention to her hair and hairstyle. He gave Venus an idealized face, which is remarkably free of blemishes, and beautifully shaded her face to distinguish a lighter side and a more shaded side. The two artworks that I have chosen are The Birth of Venus by Sandro Botticelli and the poem "Stanze per la Giostra" by Angelo Polizanio. The Birth of Venus was created during the Renaissance sometime in the 1480's. The painting is currently located in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence Italy. The poem "Stanze per la Giostra" by Angelo Polizanio was written around 1470 and was also created during the Renaissance period. These two works of art were created to represent the birth of Venus. There two winged figures on her left wrapped around each other leaning towards her which draws the viewer's eyes towards the goddess Venus and on her right, there is another female that it looks like if she is trying to help Venus cover herself. Venus is depicted incredibility beautiful with smooth and pale skin. Her curves, thick legs and arms and her pudgy belly depict her as the ideal beautiful female form of that time. In this piece, we can see that Venus is placed in the center while the other figures are placed on her sides looking at her. Botticelli uses lighter colors in the middle and to paint Venus while using darker colors around it making Venus the main focus. • 15. Art Analysis : The Birth Of Venus Throughout art, a nude woman has aroused different kinds of emotions. A prime example is Sandro Botticelli's, Birth of Venus. With this artwork, Botticelli went against the social norms of who to depict as nude figures, and the content behind it. Nude figures were only reserved to male angels, which was typical for the time period since art was still religious stories and figures. Nudes and the content of an art weren't not for a female pagan goddess. Sandro Botticelli painted the artwork with tempera, which is a fast–drying paint that was used to paint on the wall, when it was still being made. These types of artworks were referred to as frescos. The artwork demonstrates how Venus, the Roman goddess of sex, beauty, and femininity, was being pushed to shore, moments after her birth. Botticelli, along with Donatello, started the ideology of Neoplatonism, which combined Biblical stories with paganism beliefs. The Birth of Venus was successful in provoking the sexual appeal of the audience, and creating a controversy by depicting Venus as a nude, while referencing to Mary, the mother of Jesus. During the Italian Renaissance, many artists were adopting ideas of the Ancient Greek and Romans. Some ideas were perspective, humanism, and how the human body is perfect being. These ideas were what the Ancient Greek and Roman was known for, when it came to the philosophy of their art. The philosophy was lost when the Romans were defeated by the Barbarians. • 22. The Birth Of Venus By Alessandro Di Mariano Filipepi Alessandro Di Mariano Filipepi, or his most prestigious surname Sandro Botticelli, was born on March 1, 1455 in Florence, Italy. He would go to become of the most renowned painters of the early Renaissance period in Florence. One of his most sought–after paintings was that of the "Birth of Venus", where he depicted a Roman goddess and the poetic movement of illustration and humanism. Botticelli would then go on to create over one hundred more paintings in his lifetime that are still the subject of most art history classes, that relate to the Renaissance period. Botticelli's conviction of his humanistic, poetic, and religious paintings is what made him the most influential and elaborate painters of the Renaissance period. Sandro Botticelli lived throughout his life in Florence, Italy until he died at the age of 65, on the seventeenth of May 1510. He got his start by apprenticing for fellow painter Fra Flippo Lippi, "whose delicate coloring can be seen in such early works as the Adoration of the Kings (National Gall., London) and Chigi Madonna (Gardner Mus., Boston)" ("Sandro Botticelli" 1). In Botticelli's earlier works he created magnificent paintings representing Roman, Greek, humanistic paintings that focused on the metrical relationships between art, poetry, and myth. Unlike most artists in the early Renaissance, Botticelli worked with different mediums, other than clay or wall paintings; he worked with canvas, tapestry, furniture, and panels. The painting was completed sometime between 1484 and 1486 during the early renaissance, and was painted using tempera and gold on canvas, measuring 1.8 x 2.8 m. The painting depicts the birth of the Roman goddess Venus, also known by her Greek name, Aphrodite. In his painting, Botticelli makes use of primary, secondary and tertiary colors with low intensity, which gives the painting a dull, ancient look about it. I am sure that the intensity of the colors lowered over time as they were exposed to light and the elements. In this painting, Botticelli makes use of vertical and diagonal lines. • 26. Comparing Venus In The Birth Of Venus And The Beautiful By... As one of the most well–known and studied artists of the Italian Renaissance, Sandro Botticelli changed many of the ideals of Renaissance painting. His devotion to the depiction of "the Beautiful" resulted in rhythmic and poetic art that has left realism and logic behind in the quest for divine beauty. Through abstraction and the divine, Botticelli "transposed onto a plane of pure spirituality where no distinctions or fine shades are any longer possible, where all values are balanced out and merged", transcending the natural to show sublime images of divine beauty. This paper will examine two of Botticelli's paintings of Venus, in the Birth of Venus (Fig.1) and in the Primavera (Fig.2), and will consider that the two pieces were created as sister works. Through analysis of ancient and Renaissance texts, it shows that the two paintings, when considered together, they show key concepts of Neoplatonic philosophy, specifically that of the two Venuses: Earthly and Heavenly. Both the Birth of Venus and Primavera add to a narrative that implies a physical manifestation of the derivation of divine beauty and love from Heaven to Earth. In the Birth of Venus, Venus is painted nude in the center of the composition and she is standing in contrapposto, posing as the Venus pudica. The Venus Pudica pose means that the goddess's hands are over her breasts and genital area, giving Venus an opportunity to poorly attempt to maintain some form of modesty, when in reality, the placement of Venus's hands brings more attention to her nudity. Venus Pudica was a common pose among female nude sculptures of ancient greco–roman culture, as in the second century BCE Medici Venus (Fig. 3). The Medici Venus sculpture was in the collection of the Medici family, at the same time that Botticelli painted the Birth of Venus. As the Medici family were his supporters, Botticelli must have been familiar with the Medici Venus. Marsilio Ficino, leader of the Florentine Platonic movement, describes the Florentine Neoplatonic conception of beauty in his Commentary on Plato's Symposium on Love, as the "splendor of the divine goodness' and the "act or ray from [the Good] penetrating through all things. He also writes that there is a constant circle of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

One of Botticelli's most well–known art pieces is "The Birth of Venus" which Botticelli painted in the year 1484. It features Venus rising out of the sea standing on a shell in the nude surrounded by angels. The inspiration for this piece may have been based on a poetry piece by Florentine poet Angelo Poliziano. The theme of the painting, the birth of love, may cause many historians to believe that this painting was created for a wedding. (Grendler, pg. 103). They clue in on a person's emotions and how those emotions influence things around them. I have come to recognize that I reflect my personal aesthetic into every piece of art I create. My aesthetic consists of clean lines, attention to detail, and smooth blending. When I look at a piece of art, I want to be able to look at it over and over and keep finding new little details each time. I want every stroke of a paintbrush to mean something, to have a purpose. Works by Botticelli and Da Vinci showcase what I look for in a work of art. Both artists changed the history of art with their abilities to capture a scene on a surface. The Renaissance was an intriguing period; it was the rebirth of society and a time of experimenting, which is why it is my favorite time period. This painting is part of a bigger collection that depicts scenes from the life of Saint Zenobius. It's sister pieces are spread out in different parts of the world, such places as, London, Dresden and New York itself. The painter of this entire collection is Sandro Botticelli (1445–1510) and he belongs to the Early part of the Renaissance. It is worth to note, that Botticelli was taught by Filippo Lippi. Fra Filippo Lippi was a prominent artist of his time and he painted his work with great color and as well with a narrative quality. Botticelli himself made a name for himself by his artistic style and to his contribution to painting the frescoes of the Sistine Chapel and even though his most notable work of art was the Birth of Venus that was created eighteen years prior to the Three Miracles, this piece of work takes a different approach than his other paintings. The painting itself resembles the Scenes from the life of Saint John the Baptist (1490/95) and it could be said that Botticelli was inspired by it. The medium of the painting was Tempera on wood and this was common practice use of painting during the early part of the Renaissance. The painting itself tells a story. It was a time for cultural exploration which led to many intellectual advances and produced some of the most famous art and literature that we know of today. (MindEdge, 7.06) The late 1400s was a time when humanists, poets, and artists would gather to discuss classical era. Many, including Lorenzo de 'Medici, sought to interpret the works of Homer and Hesiod and in turn, had them rendered into works of art and poetry. The "Stanze per la Giostra" is based on and ode written by Hesiod, and it is said that Botticelli closely followed the text when creating the Birth of Venus. For this assignment, I will compare the Birth of Venus by Sandro Botticelli and the poem "Stanze per la Giostra" by Angelo Poliziano. The theme of both of these pieces is that of Humanism, beauty, and love. Birth of Venus Sandro Botticelli, The Birth of Venus (c. 1486). Tempera on canvas. 172.5 cm × 278.9 cm (67.9 in × 109.6 in). Uffizi, Florence The visual work that will be included is the Birth of Venus by Sandro Botticelli. The Birth of Venus was created in 1486, it is a tempera on canvas and measure roughly 5ft x 9 ft. It represents the story of the birth of Venus, the Roman goddess of Love. She was born from the seafoam and blown across the ocean by Zephyrus in a seashell. She epitomizes the beauty standards of this time, beautiful, soft and voluptuous. Botticelli used two different approaches in style when painting Birth of Venus. The characters in the foreground represent the chiaroscuro style of painting, adding light and dimension to the focal point of the piece while the background remains flat and uninteresting. Although there is a lack of perspective in Botticelli's work, it does not take away from its overall appeal. (MindEdge, 7.07) The art was commissioned by a member of the Medici family and currently resides at the Galleria degli Uffzi in Florence, Italy. Heading over to the other side of the of this Botticelli's painting, the right side of Venus, a woman dressed in a white dress stands. The use of color in this particular case to help create contrast is seen in the woman's hand, as she is holding a red, sheet–like piece of material towards Venus. Contrast is also seen under the woman's feet, where the ground consists of a deep, much more dark green in comparison to her soft ivory skin. Moving back in and focusing on Venus, contrast can be seen on the clam's shell. The lines are thicker on the clam's shell, perhaps in order to help the viewer be able to easily distinguish which ridges in the shell has more depth in comparison to the beside ridges. Value takes part in helping define the ridges in the simplest way – the ridges start of as a harsh and dark color and then fade into a lighter color. Looking at Venus' skin, there is barely any space between her upper thigh and the dark green grass that eventually runs into the water. Her form is soft and womanly and the seashell that she rides on also reflects the thought that she is unblemished and untouched, much like a pearl. • 52. Symbolism In The Divine Comedy Every arrangement of words seems to be an understatement when mentioning the success and influence of Dante's epic poem The Divine Comedy. "An allegory is a story, poem, or picture that can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning, typically a moral or political one" (Oxford Dictionary). The Divine Comedy has provided inspiration for a large body of Western Art. Originally published in the 14th century, his medieval poem written in the vernacular language of the people has been the material for countless numbers of new editions containing illustrations. Each artist finds their own clever way to express the messages in The Divine Comedy. The amount of art dedicated to this epic poem is just as impressive as the poem itself. Inferno appears to be the most popular of the three books, especially in the visual arts. "Dante's is a visual imagination" (T.S. Elliot). Extremely detailed, the book describes Hell in the most powerful visual terms. In the Inferno, Dante and the poet Virgil go to Hell where they witness the many punishments for those who disobeyed God during their lives. Each layer of Hell, described in thirty– three cantos and one introductory canto, is unique and fitting for the soul and the specific sin that was committed. (Web Gallery of Art, 2017) The most accurate representation of the structure of Dante's Hell, Sandro Botticelli is responsible for The Map of Hell, which depicts the nine circles of Hell. Described as a cave, the Map of Hell on paper is in the shape of a funnel with layers. Each layer is a level of Hell described by Dante. The levels get smaller and smaller until, at the bottom of the cave or "funnel" one sees a satanic like beast at the bottom or core. Starting with Limbo and ending with Treachery, each layer is drawn out in magnifying detail. Sandro Botticelli was an Italian painter of the early Renaissance, the Florentine was alive from around 1445 to 1510 (Florence Inferno, 2017). The man responsible for The Birth of Venus, a masterpiece that is referred to in both historical context and in pop–culture, he was a very decadent and detailed artist. Principles of Design: The focal point of the painting is the sun–drenched valley and river. The emphasis comes from the diagonal of the tree to the left that directs the view of the scene down the valley toward the farmland. Vertical balance can be seen with the firm horizon line that separates a bleak landscape with a bleaker sky, where most of the visual weight in the composition occurs in the lower half of the painting. Botticelli would hand grind a material that changes according to the light that it reflects, also known as pigment. The powdered pigments are traditionally mixed with egg yolk which dries quickly and stays firmly in place (Saitzyk, 245). During the Renaissance, fabric such as canvas were used instead of the popular wooden panel. As tempera is a durable paint, canvas is a durable fabric made of flax or cotton. In addition to painting, canvas is used to make items such as sails and tents which require stability and resilience (Saitzyk, 135). G. Alessandro Filippi‘s, also known as Sandro Botticelli's, youth remains a historical mystery. A common story is that he was in poor health through his early childhood and then went on to be trained as a goldsmith until his twenties when he began to paint. We do know, however, that Botticelli apprenticed in the workshop of an artist by the name of Filippo Lippi. In 1467, he was left by his master in Florence and apparently joined artistic careers with Verrocchio (Angelis, 3). After returning to his family for a short period of time, as indicated by tax records, Botticelli continued his career with the support of the Medici family, one of the most powerful families in Florence, Italy. • 57. The Birth Of Venus By Sandro Botticelli And The Poem... Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder The two works of art that I have chosen is the painting The Birth of Venus by Sandro Botticelli and the poem Stanze per la Giostra by Angelo Poliziano. The Birth of Venus was created between 1484 and 1486 by Sandro Botticelli. It was created in the early Renaissance period and is currently located in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy. Stanze per la Giostra was written between 1475 and 1478 by the Renaissance poet Angelo Poliziano. Its current location is the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, although it is currently not on display. The Birth of Venus and Stanze per la Giostra share many similarities as Stanze per la Giostra was Botticelli's inspiration for creating The Birth of Venus. In The Birth of Venus, Botticelli has transformed Poliziano's words into a beautiful work of art. These works of art share the theme of beauty. While Angelo Poliziano describes the beauty of the goddess Venus in his prose, Botticelli has captured her beauty with his delicate brush strokes. I will be comparing the theme of beauty between The Birth of Venus and Stanze per la Giostra as well as connecting it to contemporary standards of beauty. Alessandro Filipepi most commonly known as Sandro Botticelli was born in Florence, Italy around 1445. • 62. Can Beauty Stand The Test Of Time? Can beauty stand the test of time? This is an age old question that can be examined by comparing two works of art in different mediums from the Renaissance period and show how they share a common theme of beauty. The first piece is an exquisite painting by Sandro Botticelli, titled Birth of Venus, which shows a nude Venus entering the mortal world on a shell. The second work is a poem by Publius Ovidius Naso (known as Ovid), called The Art of Beauty, that demonstrates why it is important for Roman women to wear make–up and also directs how to apply the make–up. By comparing exactly what the Roman people thought real beauty was and why they cared so much about their appearance, to the way contemporary society views beauty, the question "Is beauty timeless?", may finally be answered. Sandro Botticelli was commissioned to paint "The Birth of Venus" in 1480, by the famous Medici family who were particularly interested in mythology. The painting features Venus, the goddess of beauty, being born into the world. Having emerged from the sea, she is standing on a shell and is being blown to the land. Venus has smooth peachy skin, long flowing curls and is being received by a magnificent cloak. Some say the model for Venus was Simonetta Vespucci, one of Botticelli's lovers, who was known as the most beautiful woman in Florence. Venus symbolized ultimate beauty and the Romans desired to look like her. Publius Ovidius Naso wrote an epic poem titled Medicamina Faciei ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

He was an artist who was completely consumed by the world of art. This was a period of great cultural change lasting from the 14th century until the 16th century in Europe. During this time period is where we find the Primavera, also known as Allegory of Spring. This masterpiece is currently located in Florence, Italy at The Galleria degli Uffizi. Also in the painting is Floras former self Chloris. Chloris is depicted having flowers come out of her mouth standing next to Zephyr who is the one who turned her into Floras as an apology. Botticelli shows that he follows the mythological characters storylines in great detail. The gods and goddesses are painted in their greek sculpture form. This could be derived from his followings of Antonio Pollaiuolo and Andrea del Verrocchio. Botticelli did make the figures more elongated and flowing with their clothing and hair. The surroundings around the figures is also derived from mythology and this can be seen by the myrtle tree in the background which belongs to Venus. Humanism can be seen through the bodies of the figures in the picture, by showing detail in muscles on Mercury and the half naked bodies the females depicted. Idealism is shown very much in this piece by how well Botticelli sticks to the gods and goddesses story lines. The Primavera stands as the largest mythological painting of the Early Renaissance. It is also a very fine example of the use of icons in greek mythology. Even though Botticelli died as a poor man his works of art still to this day are rich in history and skill as an ... • 66. Humanism In Art Art: the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power (Stevenson & Lindberg, 2010). Art takes many forms, such as paintings, drawings, sculptures, and collages, and within each form exists different genres or classifications. The early history of art, or art created within the fourteenth to nineteenth centuries, can fall into five major periods: Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo, Romanticism, and Realism. The first of the five major art periods, the Renaissance period, occurred between the thirteenth and sixteenth centuries and started within Florence, Italy. It later spread throughout the rest of Europe. Renaissance art, aimed at rebirthing classical culture, contains defining characteristics such as the theme of humanism, a more realistic portrayal of subjects due to advances in perspective, and depictions of prominent religious figures (Magic Web Solutions UK, 2015). In regards to the birth of humanism in art, "There is now little doubt that the desire to render human likenesses in specific, rather than generalized or idealized, terms began in Italy in the thirteenth century" (Grassi, 2011). Additionally, art often took the form of oil paintings on canvas or plaster and statues typically crafted from marble and bronze. Some of the most well–known artists of this time include Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Sandro ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 68. Stanze Per La Giostra The Italian Renaissance brought forth many iconic pieces that we are familiar with in modern day culture. Sandro Botticelli painted one of the most recognized and appreciated works of art from that era, The Birth of Venus (1482–1485). It is currently being displayed at the Galleria degli Uffizi in Florence, Italy. The piece depicts a nude Venus, the goddess of love, elegantly standing upon a seashell on the shore. The painting is thought to have been inspired by Ovid's Metamorphoses as well as Angelo Poliziano's poem "Stanze per la Giostra" (1475–1478). His poem tells the story of a goddess, born of the sea, being blown to shore by the zephyrs upon a seashell. There is a clear thematic connection between the two pieces of humanism and beauty ideals because the poem describes glorified divine beauty ideals while the painting displays personified mythical characters who embody elegance and grace. The relationship between the two works is that they were both commissioned by the Medici court. His piece, Madonna of the Rose Garden predates the Birth of Venus by around 15 years. Made in Florence for the Arti and Chamber of Commerce, this publicly commissioned painting dates around circa 1470, compared to the Birth of Venus which dates to around 1485. The Madonna of the Rose Garden exemplifies the religious iconography from the artists' attention to details such as the use of color, addition of religious symbols, and attention to the background. Botticelli uses the color blue and red on the Virgin Mary's garment to show the symbols of healing, love, and life. The cloth is quite flowy and covers her whole entire body. Both her red dress and blue overcoat are lined with gold, showing beauty, grace, and holiness. Both the tie around her waist and her veil are white, exemplifying the symbol of purity. She has a faded golden halo around the top of her head, signifying her holiness and connection to God. On her lap, she is cradling a young child who is seen as the Child of God. Jesus is draped in white cloth, showing purity as well. The child's hand is reaching out toward the Virgin Mary's hand to eat a pomegranate. I am unsure of the symbolic meaning of the pomegranate itself, but I know it is a crucial symbol in the religious community and this work. Jesus also has a golden halo resting atop his head, showing a connection to God and a characteristic of holiness and purity. Both figures are looking at one another, creating what seems to be a close bond by identifying as part of a family. This can be shown in his painting called "Nativity", as the painting is sharply defined and with cold colours. Art Appreciation : Sandro Botticelli Kaitlyn Cooper Artist Paper Art Appreciation 14 November 2016 Sandro Botticelli In 1445, Alessandro di Mariano Filipepi Botticelli, was born in Florence, Italy ("Sandro Botticelli Biography | artble.com," n.d.). When first reading the lengthy name, most may dismiss the artist as unrecognizable. However, the name the artist is most commonly referred to as is Sandro Botticelli. There are very limited facts about Botticelli and his personal life, although it is rumored that Botticelli had an attraction towards women he depicted through his paintings, especially towards Venus in his painting The Birth of Venus ("Sandro Botticelli Biography | artble.com," n.d.). There are mixed feelings about this claim, but it is certain that the artist was accused and convicted for sodomy at one point in his life ("Botticelli Biography," n.d.). The facts we know about his career and education are much more abundant and intriguing. To begin, Botticelli kicked off his career at the age of fourteen when he decided to aid the prominent Italian artist Fra Fillipo Lippo as his apprentice. Even though being an apprentice seemed like a small task at the time, many believe that Botticelli was much more fortunate than other artists because he was able to obtain a much higher education compared to other artists of the Renaissance ("Botticelli Biography," n.d.).
