attention from reading the textbook; it is called the Marriage of the Virgin. In this painting the artists

This new diversity in patrons over the 15th to 18th centuries meant a giant move away from
religious–themed art, which had always been commissioned by the Church, and was only really
visible to people in Churches. Art became more versatile and less focused on religion – more
mythical in some areas, while focusing on real life scenarios and wealthy people in others.
What I like about the significant shift over those centuries is that art became more of what it is
today; it resonated with a wider audience, and people started to have more of a say in what they
would like commissioned. Basically, anything goes in the art world, and I believe this push to a
wider audience and varied patronage helped to create the worldwide love of art we see today; it is a
somewhat of a joyful necessity in life, and comes in all forms and is of all subjects.

Art, drama, and music have always been shaping forces in society as they explore a variety of issues
unique to the society of the time. From the seventeenth through nineteenth centuries, the fine arts
shaped urban life in Venice, Italy and Edo, Japan. The art and music created represented the artists,
the citizens and also depicted the attitudes and interests of society at the time. Furthermore, it
impacted the city life, in economic, social and political ways. Exploring and comparing fine art
between these two cities will provide a glimpse into these societies.
Venice in the late Renaissance period was one of the most peaceful and tolerant societies within
Europe. The city itself was not known for its political fervour, but for their thriving fine arts. The
uniqueness of the city coupled with the history of family guilds allowed for fine arts, such as music
and painting to become incredibly popular, to locals and tourists alike. The impact that art,
specifically painting, had on city life is seen through the popularity of Venetian painters throughout
the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Venice achieved much of its economic success due to
popular painters such as Sebastiano Ricci and Giovanni Battista Tiepolo. These men had their work
become exceedingly popular abroad which attracted visitors to the city to view their work and others

medieval brutality and barbarism, [Giorgio] Vasari claimed, Italian artists and thinkers had bravely

The cultural elite of the time was bringing the ideas, moral values, art, and civic mindedness back to
life to, what they believed, the two high points of Western culture: Periclean Athens and Republican

that only the study of the classical liberal arts can lift society from the moral and spiritual decay of

There are a number of fundamental elements of humanism. One would be to prevail over suffering
and another, to change things in our lives for the better. To live life to the fullest, but still help others
live theirs that way as well. "The best one can do is find comfort, beauty, or value in the broken
shards of the world scattered at one's feet" (Backman, page 377).

One of the greatest stories from the Italian Renaissance is the one of Fillipo Brunelleschi and
Lorenzo Ghiberti. In 1401, the directors of the art of the Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral held a
contest for artists; to create panels for a the doors on the east entrance (Kleiner, 560–2). Because the
east doors faced the cathedral, the people thought it extremely prestigious to be able to participate in
such a massive creation. After the first competition round, two finalists remained; Brunelleschi, an
accomplished and experienced artist, and Ghiberti, a younger artist, but one with just as much talent.

It is said that history repeats itself, and in some instances this is true. Many Savonarola situations
happened around the world, but one in particular stood out to me as I have read about it before. The
Boxer Rebellion, which occurred in China from 1899 to the early 1900's. A large part of the Western
world considered China as less developed than them, despite the fact that China had existed long
before these countries. Certain people in China grew very tired of being treated as underlings as they
felt that the people of the western world were taking advantage of them. Because of this a secret
alliance began; a dangerous union which grew into a desperate attempt to purify China from all
western thought. Hence the Boxer Rebellion, which was a formation of young people bent on
destroying any and everything to do with western thought. Like the situation involving Savonarola
and the destruction of classical texts, participants in the rebellion harmed and killed many
missionaries, destroying homes, people, and even hospitals; they burned a racecourse built by the
English, and were involved in many lengthy battles. It is evident that the Boxers thought all Western
ideas were evil, and they assumed the only way to save themselves was to rid their country of
foreign ideas; something that is familiar when compared to Girolamo Savonarola and his frantic

During this period a cultural movement spread readily. This was espsicaily due to the geographical
link between the countries allowing their to be a continues cultural flow back and forth. Since Italys
was location on the Mediterranean Sea they were able to develop the first port, which allowed for
them to engage in trade and commerce as well as the spread of idea. A new found interest in the
classical art thanks to the contribution made by the of Ancient Greece and Rome. Though out time
there was, a series of discoveries and improvements of the visual arts are paintings, sculptures and
the architecture. The significant increase in prosperity among the citizens of Venice, Genoa and
Florence were associated with the trade route. The Renaissance art began to flourish within the
capital of Florence during the first decade of the 14th century. The term Renaissance means, rebirth
which also mark's an era of broad cultural achievement. They focus on learned more philosophy,
