12. What is a Literary Device?
- In literature, it’s any technique that helps authors
to achieve his or her purpose. When applied
properly, the different literary devices help readers
to appreciate, interpret, and analyze a literary
work.
- The main reason literary devices are used is to
connect with the readers.
13. Onomatopoeia
- When a word’s pronunciation imitates its sound.
- This literary device is used to write out sound effects.
- Can be seen a lot in comic books, manga, manhwa.
Examples:
1. The car horn beeped loudly.
2. There was a loud bang on the door.
14. Personification
- When something nonhuman is given human
characteristics.
- Authors use it to make their writings appear more vivid and
for readers to have better understanding of the object or
animal being described.
Examples:
1. The leaves were dancing in the wind.
1. The sun is smiling at us.
15. Simile
- Where two things are directly compared to show their
common quality.
- “as” or “like” is usually used to compare.
Examples:
1. Yesterday, I worked like a dog.
1. I’m becoming blind as a bat.
16. Metaphor
- Also use to compare two things; however, it does not use “as”
or “like”
- It makes comparison between two things that aren’t alike but
do have something in common.
- A metaphor asserts that one thing IS the other.
Examples:
1. My baby brother is a cute little teddy bear.
1. The dancer was a swan.
