How Does Mary Shelley Use Gothic Elements In Frankenstein
Frankenstein
Mary Shelley has come from a pipeline of famous literary figures including her very own father
William Godwin, an English philosopher and journalist. Speaking of which, you could imagine
Shelley had immense shoes to fill. She did exactly that. Over a long, rainy summer in Switzerland,
Shelley composed a timeless tale about a wretched creature. To devise this horrific novel, she would
spend countless hours researching and scrutinizing various aspects of human biology and gothic
literature. Mary Shelley's Frankenstein instills bone–chilling, teeth–chattering sentiments into the
reader through heavy description and relatability of the environment, styles of writing, and the
"possibility" of this actually happening. For starters, anything involving 18–19th century Europe just
exclaims gothic literature. When Shelley says, "...in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At a glance, her "old–fashioned" or "classic" style of writing simply adds to the gothic tone and
ambiance of the novel. Furthermore, she applies her expansive vocabulary to intricately describe
items such as the setting, mood, tone, and different characters. This can be seen in this quote, "She
died calmly; and her countenance expressed affection even in death...deemed a sacrilege, is not
banished. (p. )". Here it is evident that a gothic, romantic writing style is used to describe a situation.
Another literary element present are the various motifs throughout the story. One being the use of
thunderstorms. This recurring environmental effect suggested that the reader would soon come into
contact with the Creature, which often resulted in something terrible happening. To expand upon her
writing styles, implementing the Creature's perspective is a truly individualistic trait that adheres to
gothic literary principles. This novel included a plethora of gothic elements including: darkness,
individualism, science, romanticism, and human

Imagination Within Conflict In 'The Raven And Prey'
Imagination Within Conflict Gothic elements are utilized in short stories to emphasize the literal and
nonliteral meaning and to allow the reader to use their imagination. In the short stories, "The Devil
and Tom Walker" by Washington Irving, "The Raven" by Edgar Allan Poe, and "Prey" by Richard
Matheson, the following gothic elements are commonly seen: supernatural forces and entrapment.
The authors implement these elements in order to allow the reader to use their imagination and to
show the internal and external conflicts the character feels. Supernatural forces play a significant
role in constructing gothic literature into a unique work. This is the reason it is used throughout
these three stories. For instance, Poe explains the Raven speaking when ... Show more content on

Therefore, the use of supernatural forces is to allow the reader to implement a state of imagination.
Another significant element utilized by all three authors is entrapment. This gothic element is shown
to exemplify the internal and external conflicts the character feels. In particular, in "The Raven", the
narrator explains the internal conflict they feel when "...just above my chamber door – Perched, and
sat, and nothing more" (Poe 438). This implies the dreary emptiness they have after a losing a loved
one. Next, in "Prey", the author demonstrates the external conflict the girl is having as "She was
trapped...She started pounding on the door" (Matheson 6) – because of the evil doll. Finally, in "The
Devil and Tom Walker", Irving illustrates that they are prisoners (internal and external conflict)
when "The house and it's inmates had altogether a bad name" (Irving 322). This is the outcome of
conspiring with the devil. Furthermore, entrapment reflects the conflicts going on in the characters'
lives. In conclusion, the two dynamic gothic elements of supernatural forces and entrapment are
utilized in order to create imagination within the reader and reveal the

Common Themes In Gothic Literature
Common themes of distorted reality Most Romantic Literature seem to have formulated a
communal moral or theme when closely looked at. "The Black Cat" by Edgar Allen Poe, "Prey" by
Richard Matheson, and "The Feather Pillow" by Horacio Quiroga are three short stories that are all
in the genre of gothic literature; that have at least two common themes. The two themes that
intertwine all these stories together are: a supernatural force being among characters, and the
unsightly presences of violence or revenge. All three writings have the use of supernatural forces
and some sort of violence or revenge to demonstrate that good things may not always be what they
seem and if you underestimate how dangerous or powerful something is it might end up hurting
your stature or reputation in the end. All three stories have at least one character that encounters a
supernatural figure that, at first seems harmless but is soon discovered to be the complete opposite.
For example in Poe's story "for another pet of the same species, and of somewhat similar
appearance, with which to supply its place" (Poe 3). Another brilliant writer ounce said ... Show

Characters in each story commonly are attacked by an act of violence or revenge from someone or
something. The character in Poe's story is illustrated to be an alcoholic "even Pluto began to
experience the effects of my ill temper" (Poe 1). In Matheson's novel it was the supernatural figure
that was pursuing violence "It was the head of the dolls spear that was stuck in my index finger nail"
(Matheson 3). And in Quiroga's story short story it was a symbolic character that had been doing
hateful acts "Human blood is something they particularly favor, and it is not unusual to find them in

Dark Romanticism And Dark Romanticism In The 19th Century
Emerging in the 19th century, various poets and authors began to dab into the significance of evil.
They began to morph the synopsis of romanticism, into a dark supernatural era because some
authors thought the romantics were just sugar coating everything and not saying how society truly
was, so they wrote about the crime and stuff that happened that transcendentalist masked, so it was
kind of like a literary gilded age. This was a literary movement unmasked a utopian society to reveal
the world on how it really is by focusing on human nature, and its relationship with sins because
they didn't have to be optimistic and lie about what's happening.. Dark romanticism, started to
appear shortly after the transcendentalist act. The Transcendentalist act happened in New England,
between the late 1820s and 1830s. It was an act that focused on religious beliefs and that you could
be socially transformed no matter how much destruction you have committed. Some authors thought
is was in a human's nature to be evil and that no matter how good someone is there has to be some
evil in them, "Evil is the nature of mankind" said Nathaniel Hawthorne in his book Young Goodman
Brown. (Dark Romantics: Hawthorne and Poe.)
Transcendentalist made life look simpler than what it really was and that it was all rainbows and
butterflies, kinda what Henry David Thoreau said in his publication Walden when he explained his
reasoning for moving away from society because he thought it was an escape

Gothic Poetry Research Paper
Poetry is not just wrIting It's a form of art. There's many different types of art and poems. They vary
in styles, they tell stories, and they are beautiful. But what makes poems beautiful? To answer that
question we must look at the different styles of poetry. One of the styles are gothic poetry. There are
many elements in gothic poetry such as a darker story, isolated main character, women in distress,
the tip of the iceberg, and many more.
One thing that makes poetry beautiful is the darker storyline. The wrIter being referred to is Edgar
Allen Poe. He grew up in the 1800's and had a life full of pain and tragedy. He used his life
experiences to help his wrIting. When poems have a dark setting It creates a sense of mysterious. It's
in human nature to be curious. We would've gotten nowhere wIthout It, constantly asking questions
about the world and why things happen. Gothic lIterature gives us so many unanswered questions.
Questions about life and the characters. It makes the reading a much better experience otherwise.

The thing about poetry is that they never start at the beginning. They start somewhere in the middle
along a character's life. It makes the reader have to infer the character's past and why they are the
way they are. Also the stories usually include a woman in distress. She could be dead and something
happened to her character. The main character is usually isolated from the rest of the world. These
things usually go hand to hand. In "The Raven", The main character's wife lenore died causing the
main character is become isolated. In the poem It saids, "while I pondered, weak and weary, Over
many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore" (The Raven) The main character stays up late

Dark Romanticism In Walden, Henry David Thoreau
Romanticism was a movement of art and thought that occurred in Europe and the United States
during the majority of the 1800's. Authors that were involved with Romanticism valued imagination
and feeling instead of reason and intellect, which led to bold ideas that would change civilizations.
Their works focused on optimism, individualism, kinship with nature, and the power of darkness;
however, each author expressed each of these topics in various ways. These alternate ideas caused
Romanticism to be divided into two types, dark Romanticism, where they expressed dark views, and
light Romanticism, where they focused on light aspects. Dark and light Romanticism are very
diverse in their views, especially when it comes to the natural human behavior; ... Show more

For example, in Walden, Henry David Thoreau states, " Looking farther, I was surprised to find that
the chips were covered with such combatants, that it was not a duellum, but a bellum, a war between
two races of ants..." (Thoreau 206–207). Thoreau vividly describes how nature, as beautiful and awe
strucking as it can be, also has its own darkness, power, and strength. The battle he describes is
gruesome and shows how even the smallest inhabitants of the natural world can hold a strength and
power far greater than ours. In the same manner, dark Romanticism portrays nature as an important
force, with a few alterations. For instance, in Moby Dick, Herman Melville states, "Aye, Aye! It was
that accursed whale that razeed me; made a poor pegging lubber of me for ever and a day!"
(Melville 287). Melville illustrates the same concept of the power and strength of nature at
describing Moby Dick's gruesome act upon Captain Ahab. Moby Dick is accused of impairing
Captain Ahab, leaving Captain Ahab with a pendant revenge towards him. It illustrates a harsh
aspect of nature, making its strength and power evident to the readers. Both authors expertly

'Dark Romanticism In Ruined Tower'
In the height of Romanticism, a painting called Ruined Tower was created by Thomas Cole. The
painting took many ideas of both Romanticism and Dark Romanticism, summing up many of the
thoughts of these groups into one painting. For example, there is a clear distinction between dark
and light in the painting. The lighter side of the painting seems to be more towards the left side,
having the sun being its focal point, light colored clouds, pale green grass and a bright ocean. The
right side of the painting, however, holds a darker, mysterious side. The tower is the focal point of
the dark side, just as the sun is the focal of the lighter side, with dark brown rocks and shadowy grey
storm clouds heavy with rain to tie the scene together. These two scenes are quite different, but there
is a good transition between ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another idea drawn from the painting is the idea of beauty. Beauty was another important trait for
Romantics, they often used beauty in their writing to talk about nature. There are two trees on each
side of the tower, but there is a clear difference between the trees. One tree is closer to the light side
of the painting, appearing to be healthier and more lively than the other tree. The other tree is on the
dark side of the painting and though it looks healthy, it has too much wind and rain moving the
branches around. Both trees can be seen as beautiful, but to the two groups of Romantics: The
Romantics and the Dark Romantics. Nature is one of the most valuable ideas in Romanticism. One
final idea touched on by the painting is nature. For example, there are no people in the landscape,
meaning that this could be the view of someone seeing the scene. Nature is also present in the

Heart Of Darkness: The Dark Themes Of Gothic Literature
What is Gothicism some people might ask? Well that in and of itself is not the easiest thing to
explain. For many it is the dark themes in literature, but that is not so. Gothic Literature appeared in
writings because writers started to delve into the murky past of literature in order to capture the
ancient folklore and interesting mysteries. The web that makes of gothic literature stretches far and
wide and touches different territories, that many find scandalous, escapism, stalking, outré, and
perilous. Gothicism over the years has changed in several ways due to the fact that the writers were
devouring French romances, and other things like the Grimm's Teutonic tales, Grimm's Brothers
Fairy Tales. Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness, one of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The influences can be plainly seen in the dark scenery in the game, along with the slightly menacing
music. Now within the world of Castlevania, the dark scenery ranges from monster filled forests,
dark and foreboding castles to haunted towns and mansions. An example of the Castlevania series
being gothic is the game 'Castlevania: Lament of Innocence'. 'Castlevania: Lament of Innocence'
was developed by Konami for the PlayStation 2 console. This particular game relies heavily on the
dark castle as its gothic setting. Although the story of the game revolves around a vampire and the
loss of a loved one. There are many other aspects of the game that are considered gothic in nature.
For instance the music, some of which is organ music while others seem to be harps and flutes. One
of the other Castlevania games is called 'Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin'. The Castlevania game
'Portrait of Ruin' is similar yet different from many of the other Castlevania games. The main
difference is that it is played on a DS instead of a PlayStation. Although the setting of the dark castle
is still used. Even the dark music and the thrilling script remains almost the exact same as the rest of
the Castlevania games, but each video game in a certain series will always have a chance to stand

subtle to monumental. Both of these games are shrouded in the darkness that fills up the nightmares

Uses of Gothic Literature in Short Stories
The style of Gothic Literature was invented around 1764. The Gothic style writing is composed of at
least one or more of the essential gothic elements. Edgar Allen Poe is a famous author of many
mysterious and dark literary works. Most of his stories are said to likely be inspired by personal
horrors. Nathaniel Hawthorne, famous author of The Scarlet Letters uses a similar style based
around dark romanticism often with moral messages and deep psychological complexity. Edgar
Allen Poe and Nathaniel Hawthorne's stories, 'The Cask of Amontillado' and 'The Minister's Black
Veil' both demonstrate different, and some of the same elements of gothic literature.
'The Cask of Amontillado' conveys a deep rooting in gothic literature. Poe makes use of a medieval
setting and overwrought emotion to solidify this particular style of writing. The narrator, Montresor,
delineates his descent with Fortunato into the vaults: "I passed down a long and winding staircase...
we stood together on damp ground of the catacombs" (Poe 3). An element often prominent in gothic
literature is the usage of a castle with secrets passages and/or dark, hidden or otherwise ominous
staircases. The Cask of Amontillado's descriptions of the catacombs, vaults and staircase gives the
reader the same kind of eerie feeling. Additionally, Fortunato displays high emotion near the end of
the story. When he realizes his

Essay on The Everlasting Dark Shadow of Romanticism
For many, saying or hearing the word romanticism evokes numerous stereotypical and prejudged
definitions and emotions. The biggest reason this probably happens is because of how closely
romanticism sounds like romance. The similarity of the sounds and spelling of the two words can
lead to some thinking that the two words mean the same thing or are closely related. Although
romanticism and romance do share some similarities in their spelling and pronunciation they
couldn't be more different. In the Merriam Webster Dictionary romance is defined as, "a love story".

Whether Shelley anticipated that her story of reanimation and death turning to life would be her
masterwork is unknown, although it is likely that she never anticipated the kind of response that her
little tale would immediately receive and the impact that it would still have today. Frankenstein is
one of the greatest examples of Romantic writing. One of the biggest traits of Romanticism that the
story possesses is the inclusion of the Byronic hero. Victor Frankenstein's creation is a hideous,
murdering, and vengeful being but the reader can't help being fascinated by the monster and wanting
to see what he will do next. The way that the monster is written can also make the reader want to
root for him in certain parts of the story. The monster is actually an incredibly sympathetic character.
Even though the monster kills everyone that Victor loves and he performs numerous acts of evil, the
reader can still sympathize with the character and understand his motives. Unlike in most of the film
interpretations of Frankenstein and the stereotypical idea of what the monster is, he is textually very
intelligent, calculated, and isn't the slow moving speechless mongoloid that pop culture has made
him out to be. The monster even sorrowfully gives his own type of self eulogy

In "The Tell–Tale Heart," Edgar Allen Poe depicts a gruesome tale. His use of dark imagery and
harsh words make this story an unmistakable product of the Dark Romantic period. Poe's use of the
first person narrator adds an important dimension to the story. The narrator's thoughts are eating him
alive and Poe clearly portrays this to readers by repeating words and having the narrator constantly
question himself: I paced the floor to and fro with heavy strides, as if excited to fury by the
observations of the men ––but the noise steadily increased. Oh God! what could I do? I foamed ––I
raved ––I swore! I swung the chair upon which I had been sitting, and grated it upon the boards, but
the noise arose over all and continually increased. It grew louder ––louder ––louder! And still the
men chatted pleasantly, and smiled. Was it possible they heard not? Almighty God! ––no, no! They
heard! ––they suspected! ––they knew! ––they were making a mockery of my horror!–this I
thought, and this I think. But anything was better than this agony! This makes the narrator
untrustworthy and unreliable. This also helps to illustrate Dark Romanticism's questioning of
mankind. Poe focuses on how unstable the narrator is and how the unconscious mind can destroy a
man. The narrator drove himself absolutely crazy over the old man's mysterious eyeball. He was
obsessed with the eye and this caused the narrator to have extreme paranoia. The reader never finds

Gothic Elements Present in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The...
Gothic novels consist of supernatural and inexplicable elements, prophecies and curses that have a
major influence on the theme over the literature. Gothic is a method of literature with particular
traits. Gothic elements are present in Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter through Puritanism,
sin and suspense and Gothic structure. The underlying theme within the novel suggests that sins of
the past are unavoidable as they haunt the protagonist of the story. The Scarlet Letter is filled with
gothic elements from the mystery of secrets that continue to haunt the protagonists and the
uncertainty due to supernatural forces. There is also something uncanny about the plot as it is
presented as a true event that had happened thus it is familiar yet the reader is unsure of it. Sin and
the consequences that follow control the general plot. There is an overall gothic atmosphere of
suspense, mystery and secrecy. For example, the identity of Pearl's father is kept secret and
unknown to the reader. The other characters of the novel are also malicious such as Pearl or
Chillingworth. They seem to be involved in some sort of witchcraft as they are not normal and are
set apart from the Puritan community. Hester, Pearl's mother, is also described as a dark, shadow
type of character as "when the sunshine came, she was not there" (Hawthorne, 157). Hester is
described as dark and mysterious which sets a gloomy tone from the beginning. Even her daughter

grim theme. Although they use the same 3 types of irony, the authors use them differently and
similarly at the same time. In Young Goodman Brown by Nathaniel Hawthorne and A Cask of

that he is leaving his faith behind. Secondly, Goodman never truly finds out

In this short story, Poe uses a decaying setting in a castellated abbey away from the rest of the town

dames of his court, and with these retired to the deep seclusion of one of his castellated abbeys"(1).
The plague was reaching everyone, so the prince decided to bring his friends up to his castle to party
while the people in the town are getting sick and dying. Not only did "The Masque of The Red
Death" use a decaying setting as a characteristic in the story, but also Poe uses darkness as another
characteristic throughout the story. Poe describes the seven rooms in the Prince's castle, and how
each one is a different color and theme. Poe illustrates, "But in the western or black chamber the
effect of the fire–light that streamed upon the dark hangings through the blood–tinted panes, was
ghastly in the extreme, and produced so wild a look upon the countenances of those who entered,
that there were few of the company bold enough to set foot within its precincts at all"(1). Poe uses

Themes Of Dark Romanticism
Many people think the natural world is a dark place. What makes human beings think this? Is it that
they were brought up as a child to think this way, or was it that as they got old they thought their
lives had become worthless, therefore, they continued to not care? Similar themes are shown in the
writings of Edgar Allen Poe, Washington Irving, and Nathaniel Hawthorne in their individual works
"The Pit and the Pendulum," "The Devil and Tom Walker," and "Dr. Heidegger's Experiment."
Unlike the Transcendentalists who saw the purity of an individual, Dark Romantics saw people as
unrighteous and damnable and their writings reflect that people suffer, they see nature as something
mysterious, and people have guilt from sinning. In Dark Romantic literary works the characters are
often suffering. For instance, in "The Pit and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For instance, in "Dr. Heidegger's Experiment" by Nathaniel Hawthorne, he explains how the
characters each have something they want to change in their lives because they feel guilty. Widow
Wycherly at one time was a woman who was loved in the town, but then people learned more about
her past. She lost her reputation and has guilt for it: "As for the Widow Wycherly, tradition tells us
that she was once a great beauty. But shocking stories about her past had led the people of the town
to reject her. So, she lived very much alone." (Hawthorne 252). Similarly, the characters, who
wanted to be young again, drank the youth water. As they are guilty for their past mistakes, and they
look miserable, "They seemed as though they had never known youth or pleasure. They looked like
they had always been the weak, unhappy creatures who were bent over the doctor's table"

The American Romantic Era begins in 1830 and ends in 1865 (Scheidenhelm 1)."Romantic
literature places an emphasis on the individual and on the expression of personal emotions"(1). Dark
Romanticism revolves around the struggles of sin and elements of the supernatural. Famous authors
of this era include: Nathaniel Hawthorne, Washington Irving, and Edgar Allan Poe. Short stories
from each of these are exemplary examples of Dark Romanticism.
"The Minister's Black Veil", by Nathaniel Hawthorne, is a prime example of Dark Romanticism. Mr.
Hooper gives his sermon about the reprehensible world. "The subject and reference to secret sin, and
those sad mysteries which we hide from our nearest and dearest, and would fain conceal from our
own consciousness" (Hawthorne 265). To enhance the homily, Mr. Hooper uses the black veil to
show that people mask their wrongdoing and pretend to be honorable. After the funeral, parishioners
claim "...the minister and the maren's spirit were walking hand in hand"(267). Grim ... Show more

These three stories all include dark themes, strong emotion, and hints of insanity along with other
important components. Nathaniel Hawthorne uses his story to convey the wickedness of sin.
Washington Irving's main focus is on the eerie setting and harsh life lessons. Meanwhile, when one
looks at what Edgar Allen Poe writes it is evident that the attention is on the madness and delirium
that the charter goes through. These stories are meant to enlighten one on the harsh truths of reality.
Tribulations and the use of strong emotions are often used and provide insight to the reader. Many of
these stories involve psychological torment and the use of a gloomy ambience to set the mood and
tone of the story. The themes of the stories are established by the use symbolism and are

Thesis On Dark Romanticism
1. Introduction.
Foreach of us there exists a place where true horror lies, for instance– our own personal rooms. We
can find this horror everywhere– home, college; on the streets... But what we fail to understand is
the presence of that particular horror or fear that exists in our own minds. We do not realize that it's
our mind that controls this horror and forces us to imagine or see irrelevant things.
Few people somehow manage to proclaim at least once in their life, their character for evil. They
may proudly boast with an open facial expression and an ingenuous smile and yet a part of their
being or self leaves the unalterable belief that there is something not quite right with them which
they are unable to explain, grasp mentally or even ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The concept that I chose, to workupon my dissertation is, "Dark Romanticism" and the aim of my
research is to focus upon various types of beliefs that people had during the 19th and 20th century
and to understand the psyche of the human mind.
To begin with, the term"Dark Romanticism", was developed from the negative psyche of the sub
divided literature of Romanticism and was influenced greatly by the early Romantic writers. The
actual meaning of this term varies, but the normal definition of this term means, something dark but
romantic which might be evil and tender, impractical and blind, inventive and invisible, poetic and
cheerless, unpractical and unenlightened, unrevealed and thriftless, impressive and desolate. Dark
Romanticism is clearly a matter of contradictions. This form of literature personified frightening,
hair–raising, blood–curdling and ghostly symbols having dreadful, grim and atrocious themes
identifying the psychological consequences of wrong–doings and sin. This appeared to be more
realistic but certainly depressing. Realistic– because this movement made people witness the
consequences of their wrong–doings and sinful acts. People began to question themselves and
became conscious of their

A Literary Movement
Throughout time, we are introduced to many different genres and types of literature. Each genre
focuses on a particular subject. Narrative or types of literature fall into a certain category. In the
mid–1800s in the United States American Romanticism, a literary movement was developed.
Romanticism emphasized the imagination and emotion, and many poets and novelists came to be, or
where known for their works in Romanticism. The United States history and landscape influenced
the literary movement. History from the 1800s, tells the readers of the different obstacles

Readers gain a deeper understanding of America in the 19th century. Romanticism also caused many
changes in the newly established nation, and caused many effects. Writers show a different point of
view, either negative or positive. As Transcendentalism viewed the good of people, Dark
Romanticism showed the darkness of the soul. These two philosophical movements positively
affected people. Transcendentalists took stand in women's suffrage, education, etc

The Castle Of Otranto, By Nathaniel Hawthorne
"It was on a dreary night of November that I beheld the accomplishment of my toils. With an
anxiety that almost amounted to agony" Most people recognize passages like this one from
Frankenstein as belonging to the gothic school, but it also is remarkably similar to the passages
found in Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter. This similarity makes since the first gothic
novel, The Castle of Otranto , was published in 1764, which gives The Scarlet Letter one hundred
years to steep in the gothic tradition. But the question arises, did the gothic tradition merely have an
effect on Hawthorne's writing or is The Scarlet Letter actually a gothic novel? Due to its gloomy
setting, weak or evil clergy/ anti–religious sentiment, and intense human ... Show more content on

For the anti–clerical nature in The Scarlet Letter one may examine Reverend Dimmesdale, though
he is a priest and seen as a model for the community, he in truth is " the worst of sinners" and is " an
abomination"(126). This sort of satire of the clergy is not uncommon in Gothic novels, as often the
clergy plays an evil or ,at least, a contemptible role. In Mathew Lewis's The Monk , a monk plays a
rather evil role, and in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein which has a seeming lack or absence of any true
greater power but man himself, this satirical view of religion is common across gothic writing. So
too does this view occur in the Scarlet Letter. Hawthorne clearly holds some form of scorn towards
organized religion and especially that strong faith of the Puritans. For anti–religion as a whole, one
may observe how Hawthorne uses God to justify terrible acts through Chillingworth. Chillingworth
justifies his reign of terror over Dimmesdale by telling Hester that he should have known that the
scarlet letter must lie " blazing at the end of our path"(68). This sort of belief in fate and how all
actions are predestined are what drive the conflict of this novel as Chillingworth justifies his actions
by using fate and Dimmesdale's belief in fate leads him to accept Chillingworth's help as "the sin of
rejecting the aid which Providence so manifestly held out"( 107). Hence it is the

Show

that was pursuing violence "It was the head of the dolls spear that was stuck in my index finger nail"

Grease Comparison
In the movie Grease, Sandy Olsson is a young girl who is known for her purity and wholesomeness.
Throughout the story, Olsson is seen as an almost angelic type of figure who does not smoke, drink,
or partake in any of the rebellious activities that her new friends do. Sandy Olsson never seems to fit
in with the rest of her friends, being that she didn't wear skin tight clothes, have her ears pierced, or
do her hair up with enormous amounts of product. However, in the last few moments of the movie,
Sandy reappears in a skin tight catsuit, her hair done up in enormous curls, and she flicks a cigarette
to the ground. Similarly to Sandy from Grease, Nathaniel Hawthorne's, The House of the Seven
Gables, undergoes a major change of style. Throughout the entire novel, Hawthorne described a
dark and gloomy world in which nothing seemed to go right for the characters. However, when
Judge Pyncheon dies, the world seems almost happy and cheerful. Though the style of writing
changes drastically, the ending is appropriate because of the many similarities, both physically and
personality wise, that the Judge and Colonel Pyncheon shared.
Judge Pyncheon died a very familiar and appropriate death. Throughout the novel, Nathaniel
Hawthorne constantly describes the similarities that the Judge and his forefather shared. At first
sight, both men appeared to be tall, wealth, and powerful men. The two were also very greedy, ill–

Comparison Of Dark Romanticism And Transcendentalism
Transcendentalism is the belief that people and nature are inherently good. Transcendentalists
believe that the institutionalization of society has corrupted the good and purity of people, and that
instead of such institutions, self–reliance and individualism are where people perform at their best.
The transcendental movement in the 19th century was met with a small wave of skeptics, most
notably, authors such as Edgar Allen Poe and Nathaniel Hawthorne, who were part of a subgenre of
Romanticism called Dark Romanticism. Literature within this subgenre was in direct contrast of the
utopian ideas of transcendentalism; these writers did not believe in humanity's inherent perfection.
Furthermore, Dark Romantic authors presented their characters as individuals prone to self–
destruction and sin, unlike the transcendentalists who saw individuals as full of wisdom, divinity,
and goodness.
However, while Poe was deeply rooted in his dark romantic beliefs, Hawthorne came about only
after experiencing for himself the pitfalls of reform. He wrote The Blithedale Romance, a satirical
romantic fiction, based on his recollections of experiences he had after living at Brook Farm, a
short–lived utopian community based on extrapolation of transcendental ideas. While initially
excited for the possibilities of Transcendentalist reform, by the end of his time at Brook Farm,
Hawthorne was ultimately disappointed. He grew to dislike Transcendentalism after living there,

Dark Romanticism in a story is usually when there is violent events, emphasis on nature, emotion
and evil characters. Dark Romanticism was at its peak during the 1800s. Nathaniel Hawthorne is
known as a dark romantic writer for his stories such as "The Minister's Black Veil" (1843) and "The
Birth–Mark" (1843). Hawthorne also shows dark romanticism in "The Scarlet Letter"(1850). In
Nathaniel Hawthorne's book The Scarlet Letter" the author uses places and the characters to display
dark romanticism to the readers.
Throughout the book there is a lot of supernaturalism, most of which is displayed through the
characters. Pearl is a great example of this, Pearl is constantly referred to as a "devil child" and is
said to be born from sin. Pearl is also constantly exploiting others for their sins. The character who
represents dark romanticism the most is Roger Chillingworth. Chillingworth lived a pretty basic life

Mr Dimmesdale's secret closet, under lock and key, there was a bloody scourge." (Hawthorne 136)

himself by going days without sleep. This causes him to seem dark and depressed and the
community thinks he is possessed by a demon. Hester is also a example of dark romanticism in the

Summary Of Dark Romanticism In The Raven By Edgar Allan Poe
Dark romanticism was a peculiar literary period during the romanticism era which was led by Edgar
Allan Poe and Nathaniel Hawthorne. It focused on opposing views from that of transcendentalist
and leaned towards a gothic style. Poe and Hawthorne wrote about faulty human nature and of
secret sin, that all humans hide. They also wrote with the purpose of starting a social reform without
causing a huge uproar. Throughout their writing, the author's utilized literary tropes in order further
their narrative and convey their message. Poe's most noticeable craft is that he was able to put a
voice inside of a mind that is diseased and write psychological literature masterpieces. Poe utilized
many literary tropes in order to further develop his narratives, one of them being "The Raven". "The
Raven" is a story filled with symbolism and great writing delved into the effects of psychological
trauma and a shift in the protagonist's mindset. The story takes place during midnight, which is
commonly associated with dark forces and frightening plots, along with the gloomy feel of
December. He is a bereaved lover filled with sorrow attempting to get his mind off of Lenore when
he hears a knock on his door that " filled me with fantastic terrors never felt before" (Poe 375). It
was the supposition of the lover that the knocking on the door was the "spirit of his mistress"( Poe
376) which demonstrates how deluded he was. However, when the raven enters his chamber it flies
and lands above the head of Pallas, which signifies that his harmful mental obsession prevailed over
human wisdom and logic, which are epitomized by Pallas. The protagonist comments to himself
saying that the raven shall fly out of his life as others have done before, to which the raven replies
"nevermore"(Poe 380). Once the narrator begins to become upset with the bird he states "thing of
evil!"(Poe 383). He believes that the bird is a messenger from the afterlife and represents a demonic
image in relation to Pluto, ruler of the underworld. The Plutonian sent bird is there to witness and
expedite the protagonists descending into madness. He begins "weak and weary"(Poe 374), but as
the narrator continues speaking to the raven he becomes more depressed and

Examples Of Dark Romanticism In Edgar Allan Poe
Edgar Allan Poe was a typical representative of the 19th century literary movement – Dark
Romanticism. This essay will look at one of his short stories – The Fall of the House of Usher – in
its broad cultural and literary context, its place among other Poe's works, the story's stylistic
features, and the main themes and characters.
Speaking of the cultural context of the work, I would like to refer to Kerry Vermillion and Quinn
McCumber, who considered the works of Edgar Allan Poe to be influenced by two opposite ideas
popular in his time: Empiricism and Transcendentalism. While the former claimed that people could
acquire knowledge about reality and truth by perceiving the physical world through the senses, the
latter argued that reality dwells ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

perhaps is a conflicting issue of the text. One can interpret this dichotomy in both ways. Readers can

Dark Romanticism Vs Transcendentalism Essay
Although Transcendentalism was the first great American literary period, Dark Romanticism
followed closely behind, bringing a dark twist to the previous writing style. Dark Romantic writers,
such as Poe, Hawthorne, and Melville, saw Transcendentalism as overly optimistic. Dark Romantics
wanted to change literature written during the time. While Transcendentalists wrote about the need
for social reform, Dark Romantics wrote about characters failing at change (VanSpanckeren). Both
styles believed nature held a spiritual force, but Dark Romantics viewed this force as evil and
mysterious. Romantic writers believed that people were prone to sin. This contrasted the
Transcendentalist belief that all people are essentially good. Following the popularity ... Show more

(Gartner) After Longfellow's death, Walt Whitman wrote that Longfellow's work: ...brings nothing

Edgar Allan Poe (1809–1849) born in the United States was a poet, writer, critic, and journalist
recognized as one of the greatest exponents of the Dark Romanticism (Ultan and Olson, 51). Dark
Romanticism is an American literary subgenre emerged in the nineteenth century from the
philosophical movement called transcendentalism. Dark Romanticism, broadly speaking, rely very
little on perfection as an innate quality of the human being, a key idea of the transcendentalists

expectation about how, when, and why. The reader is exposed from the beginning to the narrator's
style and without realizing it will be ruled by the logic of that fictional world, in which melancholy
and spiritual impatience reigns.
Faithful to the principles of the author, the first detailed words of description of the setting announce
the decadent character of the composition– "All the main lines of action are supported by a
systematic elaboration of detail" (Robinson, 79). The Fall of the House of Usher begins with the
description of the place where all the facts of the story will develop: "It was a dark and soundless
day near the end of the year, and clouds were hanging low in the heavens... through country with
little life or beauty; and in the early evening I came within view of the House of Usher" (Poe, 22).
At exterior levels, the presence of a crack crosses the whole structure of the house: "a crack making
its way from the top down the wall until it became lost in the dark waters of the lake." (Poe, 23). The
dark aspect is present in the obscure interiors of the house: "Dark covering hung upon the walls. The

Edgar Allan Poe Dark Romanticism
Dark Romanticism
From the 1836 to late 1840s there was a group of people, the Transcendentalist, who originated in
New England. The Transcendentalists saw nature as important and non–sinister. The
Transcendentalism lead to a movement known as the Transcendental Philosophical Movement. The
movement was a centered on Ralph Waldo Emerson's belief that everyone was good. The
Transcendentalists believed that people were at their best when they were independent and rely on
themselves. The movement contributed to the start of Dark Romanticism in the late eighteen
hundreds. Dark Romanticism created a small twist on Transcendentalists and Romantic elements.
Romanticism consisted of elements such as: optimistic approaches, sins being properly punished,
and truly good being rewarded. Dark Romanticism was also known as Gothicism. Gothicism was
fiction that included horror, death, and romance. Dark Romanticism and gothicism were paired up
because they both showed the sinister sides of nature and people. Dark Romantic movement

Dark Romanticism In The Raven By Edgar Allan Poe
The Raven is a poem written in January of 1845 by Edgar Allan Poe. It was written during the
period of romanticism, a time when many people took the opposite ideology of rationalism,
believing that imagination, nature, feeling, and nature are more important than logic and society.
These ideas are infused into Poe's poem, The Raven. However, this work is placed into the sub genre
of Dark Romanticism, whose works deal with feelings rather than reason, and viewed events as
symbols pointing beyond menial life. There are many elements in The Raven that correctly identify
the poem in the Dark Romanticism genre. Incorporations of elements such as the supernatural, the
search for truth in nature, and the exploration of evil in the poem The Raven rightly classify the
work in the genre of Dark Romanticism.
One of the elements that helps classify The Raven as a work in the Dark Romanticism period is its
use of the supernatural. One of the characteristics of the Romanticism realm of literature is that it
explored the world of the supernatural. This aspect is heavy in the Raven. One example is in lines
28–30, reading "And the only word there spoken was the whispered word, "Lenore?" This I
whispered, and an echo murmured back the word, "Lenore!"– Merely this and nothing more." This
quote is interesting, because in the beginning of the poem, it mentions the setting is his bedroom.

darkness of the story. It represents the literal journey in and out of darkness because the main

the story when the main character makes more and more twisted decisions as the story goes on. The

Marlow's story starts being told on a ship on the Thames in daylight. As the story is told, time passes

story realizing how dark and twisted he actually is and the lack of actual movement on the ship in
the Thames represents how Marlow has been this twisted since the beginning of the story. "Marlow
ceased, and sat apart, indistinct and silent, in the pose of a meditating Buddha. Nobody moved for a
time. "We have lost the first of the ebb," said the Director, suddenly. I raised my head. The offing
was barred by a black bank of clouds, and the tranquil waterway leading to the uttermost ends of the
earth flowed somber under an overcast sky–seemed to lead into the heart of an immense darkness."
In conclusion, movement in Heart of Darkness adds meaning to the story in several different ways.

The Dark Side Of Human Nature In Nathaniel Hawthorne And...
Nathaniel Hawthorne and Edgar Allen Poe were extremely successful gothic or dark romantic
authors of the 19th century. The two authors wrote a plethora of short stories that strayed from the
rationalist styles of the 18th century and paved the way for other dark romantic authors.
Romanticism focuses on emotions and nature while rationalism focuses on logic and reasoning.
Hawthorne and Poe display the darker side of human nature throughout all of their works. Three
especially good examples of this particular style are Hawthorne's "Dr. Heidegger's Experiment" as
well as Poe's "The Tell–Tale Heart" and "The Black Cat." Hawthorne's short story "Dr. Heidegger's
Experiment" highlights four major vices that humanity as a whole struggles with. For each of the
four vices there is an elderly character that has failed at life due to them. The first such character is
Widow Wycherly; her vice is vanity, the next is Mr. Medbourne; his vice is greed, after him is
Colonel Killigrew; his vice is lust, and finally Mr. Gascoigne; his vice is corruption. All four of
these characters are invited into Dr. Heidegger's lab to partake in an experiment. They are given
water that is believed to be from the fountain of youth. They will be given another chance to right
their wrongs and fix their vices. Upon consumption of the water, the four elderly people begin to act
young again and return to their old ways of vanity, greed, lust, and corruption. Dr. Heidegger said
that, "if the fountain gushed at

How Does Mary Shelley Use Gothic Elements In Frankenstein

  • 1. How Does Mary Shelley Use Gothic Elements In Frankenstein Frankenstein Mary Shelley has come from a pipeline of famous literary figures including her very own father William Godwin, an English philosopher and journalist. Speaking of which, you could imagine Shelley had immense shoes to fill. She did exactly that. Over a long, rainy summer in Switzerland, Shelley composed a timeless tale about a wretched creature. To devise this horrific novel, she would spend countless hours researching and scrutinizing various aspects of human biology and gothic literature. Mary Shelley's Frankenstein instills bone–chilling, teeth–chattering sentiments into the reader through heavy description and relatability of the environment, styles of writing, and the "possibility" of this actually happening. For starters, anything involving 18–19th century Europe just exclaims gothic literature. When Shelley says, "...in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At a glance, her "old–fashioned" or "classic" style of writing simply adds to the gothic tone and ambiance of the novel. Furthermore, she applies her expansive vocabulary to intricately describe items such as the setting, mood, tone, and different characters. This can be seen in this quote, "She died calmly; and her countenance expressed affection even in death...deemed a sacrilege, is not banished. (p. )". Here it is evident that a gothic, romantic writing style is used to describe a situation. Another literary element present are the various motifs throughout the story. One being the use of thunderstorms. This recurring environmental effect suggested that the reader would soon come into contact with the Creature, which often resulted in something terrible happening. To expand upon her writing styles, implementing the Creature's perspective is a truly individualistic trait that adheres to gothic literary principles. This novel included a plethora of gothic elements including: darkness, individualism, science, romanticism, and human ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Imagination Within Conflict In 'The Raven And Prey' Imagination Within Conflict Gothic elements are utilized in short stories to emphasize the literal and nonliteral meaning and to allow the reader to use their imagination. In the short stories, "The Devil and Tom Walker" by Washington Irving, "The Raven" by Edgar Allan Poe, and "Prey" by Richard Matheson, the following gothic elements are commonly seen: supernatural forces and entrapment. The authors implement these elements in order to allow the reader to use their imagination and to show the internal and external conflicts the character feels. Supernatural forces play a significant role in constructing gothic literature into a unique work. This is the reason it is used throughout these three stories. For instance, Poe explains the Raven speaking when ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Therefore, the use of supernatural forces is to allow the reader to implement a state of imagination. Another significant element utilized by all three authors is entrapment. This gothic element is shown to exemplify the internal and external conflicts the character feels. In particular, in "The Raven", the narrator explains the internal conflict they feel when "...just above my chamber door – Perched, and sat, and nothing more" (Poe 438). This implies the dreary emptiness they have after a losing a loved one. Next, in "Prey", the author demonstrates the external conflict the girl is having as "She was trapped...She started pounding on the door" (Matheson 6) – because of the evil doll. Finally, in "The Devil and Tom Walker", Irving illustrates that they are prisoners (internal and external conflict) when "The house and it's inmates had altogether a bad name" (Irving 322). This is the outcome of conspiring with the devil. Furthermore, entrapment reflects the conflicts going on in the characters' lives. In conclusion, the two dynamic gothic elements of supernatural forces and entrapment are utilized in order to create imagination within the reader and reveal the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Common Themes In Gothic Literature Common themes of distorted reality Most Romantic Literature seem to have formulated a communal moral or theme when closely looked at. "The Black Cat" by Edgar Allen Poe, "Prey" by Richard Matheson, and "The Feather Pillow" by Horacio Quiroga are three short stories that are all in the genre of gothic literature; that have at least two common themes. The two themes that intertwine all these stories together are: a supernatural force being among characters, and the unsightly presences of violence or revenge. All three writings have the use of supernatural forces and some sort of violence or revenge to demonstrate that good things may not always be what they seem and if you underestimate how dangerous or powerful something is it might end up hurting your stature or reputation in the end. All three stories have at least one character that encounters a supernatural figure that, at first seems harmless but is soon discovered to be the complete opposite. For example in Poe's story "for another pet of the same species, and of somewhat similar appearance, with which to supply its place" (Poe 3). Another brilliant writer ounce said ... The character in Poe's story is illustrated to be an alcoholic "even Pluto began to experience the effects of my ill temper" (Poe 1). In Matheson's novel it was the supernatural figure that was pursuing violence "It was the head of the dolls spear that was stuck in my index finger nail" (Matheson 3). And in Quiroga's story short story it was a symbolic character that had been doing hateful acts "Human blood is something they particularly favor, and it is not unusual to find them in a feather pillow" (Quiroga 2). All three quotes were significant to the story; and way to show violence so that the reader can know that using quick judgment on how kind a situation is in your favor could end up hurting you in the ... • 7. Dark Romanticism And Dark Romanticism In The 19th Century Emerging in the 19th century, various poets and authors began to dab into the significance of evil. They began to morph the synopsis of romanticism, into a dark supernatural era because some authors thought the romantics were just sugar coating everything and not saying how society truly was, so they wrote about the crime and stuff that happened that transcendentalist masked, so it was kind of like a literary gilded age. This was a literary movement unmasked a utopian society to reveal the world on how it really is by focusing on human nature, and its relationship with sins because they didn't have to be optimistic and lie about what's happening.. Dark romanticism, started to appear shortly after the transcendentalist act. The Transcendentalist act happened in New England, between the late 1820s and 1830s. It was an act that focused on religious beliefs and that you could be socially transformed no matter how much destruction you have committed. Some authors thought is was in a human's nature to be evil and that no matter how good someone is there has to be some evil in them, "Evil is the nature of mankind" said Nathaniel Hawthorne in his book Young Goodman Brown. (Dark Romantics: Hawthorne and Poe.) Transcendentalist made life look simpler than what it really was and that it was all rainbows and butterflies, kinda what Henry David Thoreau said in his publication Walden when he explained his reasoning for moving away from society because he thought it was an escape ... One thing that makes poetry beautiful is the darker storyline. The wrIter being referred to is Edgar Allen Poe. He grew up in the 1800's and had a life full of pain and tragedy. • 11. Dark Romanticism In Walden, Henry David Thoreau Romanticism was a movement of art and thought that occurred in Europe and the United States during the majority of the 1800's. Authors that were involved with Romanticism valued imagination and feeling instead of reason and intellect, which led to bold ideas that would change civilizations. Their works focused on optimism, individualism, kinship with nature, and the power of darkness; however, each author expressed each of these topics in various ways. These alternate ideas caused Romanticism to be divided into two types, dark Romanticism, where they expressed dark views, and light Romanticism, where they focused on light aspects. For example, in Walden, Henry David Thoreau states, " Looking farther, I was surprised to find that the chips were covered with such combatants, that it was not a duellum, but a bellum, a war between two races of ants..." (Thoreau 206–207). Thoreau vividly describes how nature, as beautiful and awe strucking as it can be, also has its own darkness, power, and strength. The battle he describes is gruesome and shows how even the smallest inhabitants of the natural world can hold a strength and power far greater than ours. In the same manner, dark Romanticism portrays nature as an important force, with a few alterations. For instance, in Moby Dick, Herman Melville states, "Aye, Aye! It was that accursed whale that razeed me; made a poor pegging lubber of me for ever and a day!" (Melville 287). Melville illustrates the same concept of the power and strength of nature at describing Moby Dick's gruesome act upon Captain Ahab. Moby Dick is accused of impairing Captain Ahab, leaving Captain Ahab with a pendant revenge towards him. It illustrates a harsh aspect of nature, making its strength and power evident to the readers. • 17. 'Dark Romanticism In Ruined Tower' In the height of Romanticism, a painting called Ruined Tower was created by Thomas Cole. The painting took many ideas of both Romanticism and Dark Romanticism, summing up many of the thoughts of these groups into one painting. For example, there is a clear distinction between dark and light in the painting. The lighter side of the painting seems to be more towards the left side, having the sun being its focal point, light colored clouds, pale green grass and a bright ocean. The right side of the painting, however, holds a darker, mysterious side. The tower is the focal point of the dark side, just as the sun is the focal of the lighter side, with dark brown rocks and shadowy grey storm clouds heavy with rain to tie the scene together. These two scenes are quite different, but there is a good transition between ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another idea drawn from the painting is the idea of beauty. Beauty was another important trait for Romantics, they often used beauty in their writing to talk about nature. One tree is closer to the light side of the painting, appearing to be healthier and more lively than the other tree. The other tree is on the dark side of the painting and though it looks healthy, it has too much wind and rain moving the branches around. Both trees can be seen as beautiful, but to the two groups of Romantics: The Romantics and the Dark Romantics. Nature is one of the most valuable ideas in Romanticism. Gothic Literature appeared in writings because writers started to delve into the murky past of literature in order to capture the ancient folklore and interesting mysteries. The web that makes of gothic literature stretches far and wide and touches different territories, that many find scandalous, escapism, stalking, outré, and perilous. • 21. Gothic Elements In Gothic Literature Natalie Earl Mrs. Kanney Honors ELA 9 3 October, 2017 Uses of Gothic Literature in Short Stories The style of Gothic Literature was invented around 1764. The Gothic style writing is composed of at least one or more of the essential gothic elements. Edgar Allen Poe is a famous author of many mysterious and dark literary works. Most of his stories are said to likely be inspired by personal horrors. Nathaniel Hawthorne, famous author of The Scarlet Letters uses a similar style based around dark romanticism often with moral messages and deep psychological complexity. Edgar Allen Poe and Nathaniel Hawthorne's stories, 'The Cask of Amontillado' and 'The Minister's Black Veil' both demonstrate different, and some of the same elements of gothic literature. 'The Cask of Amontillado' conveys a deep rooting in gothic literature. Poe makes use of a medieval setting and overwrought emotion to solidify this particular style of writing. The narrator, Montresor, delineates his descent with Fortunato into the vaults: "I passed down a long and winding staircase... we stood together on damp ground of the catacombs" (Poe 3). An element often prominent in gothic literature is the usage of a castle with secrets passages and/or dark, hidden or otherwise ominous staircases. The Cask of Amontillado's descriptions of the catacombs, vaults and staircase gives the reader the same kind of eerie feeling. Additionally, Fortunato displays high emotion near the end of the story. • 23. Essay on The Everlasting Dark Shadow of Romanticism For many, saying or hearing the word romanticism evokes numerous stereotypical and prejudged definitions and emotions. The biggest reason this probably happens is because of how closely romanticism sounds like romance. The similarity of the sounds and spelling of the two words can lead to some thinking that the two words mean the same thing or are closely related. Although romanticism and romance do share some similarities in their spelling and pronunciation they couldn't be more different. In the Merriam Webster Dictionary romance is defined as, "a love story". The Romantic Period was not necessarily a time of true romance and love stories, although love was written about, but was instead a time of extreme emotion expressed in many ... Frankenstein is one of the greatest examples of Romantic writing. One of the biggest traits of Romanticism that the story possesses is the inclusion of the Byronic hero. Victor Frankenstein's creation is a hideous, murdering, and vengeful being but the reader can't help being fascinated by the monster and wanting to see what he will do next. The way that the monster is written can also make the reader want to root for him in certain parts of the story. The monster is actually an incredibly sympathetic character. Even though the monster kills everyone that Victor loves and he performs numerous acts of evil, the reader can still sympathize with the character and understand his motives. Unlike in most of the film interpretations of Frankenstein and the stereotypical idea of what the monster is, he is textually very intelligent, calculated, and isn't the slow moving speechless mongoloid that pop culture has made him out to be. Authors during the Romantic period developed and integrated the idea of the individual being the main focus in life. His use of dark imagery and harsh words make this story an unmistakable product of the Dark Romantic period. Poe's use of the first person narrator adds an important dimension to the story. The narrator's thoughts are eating him alive and Poe clearly portrays this to readers by repeating words and having the narrator constantly question himself: I paced the floor to and fro with heavy strides, as if excited to fury by the observations of the men ––but the noise steadily increased. Oh God! what could I do? I foamed ––I raved ––I swore! I swung the chair upon which I had been sitting, and grated it upon the boards, but the noise arose over all and continually increased. It grew louder ––louder ––louder! And still the men chatted pleasantly, and smiled. Was it possible they heard not? Almighty God! ––no, no! They heard! ––they suspected! ––they knew! ––they were making a mockery of my horror!–this I thought, and this I think. But anything was better than this agony! This makes the narrator untrustworthy and unreliable. This also helps to illustrate Dark Romanticism's questioning of mankind. Poe focuses on how unstable the narrator is and how the unconscious mind can destroy a man. The narrator drove himself absolutely crazy over the old man's mysterious eyeball. He was obsessed with the eye and this caused the narrator to have extreme paranoia. The reader never finds out ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Gothic novels consist of supernatural and inexplicable elements, prophecies and curses that have a major influence on the theme over the literature. Gothic is a method of literature with particular traits. Gothic elements are present in Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter through Puritanism, sin and suspense and Gothic structure. The underlying theme within the novel suggests that sins of the past are unavoidable as they haunt the protagonist of the story. The Scarlet Letter is filled with gothic elements from the mystery of secrets that continue to haunt the protagonists and the uncertainty due to supernatural forces. There is also something uncanny about the plot as it is presented as a true event that had happened thus it is familiar yet the reader is unsure of it. Sin and the consequences that follow control the general plot. There is an overall gothic atmosphere of suspense, mystery and secrecy. For example, the identity of Pearl's father is kept secret and unknown to the reader. The other characters of the novel are also malicious such as Pearl or Chillingworth. They seem to be involved in some sort of witchcraft as they are not normal and are set apart from the Puritan community. Hester, Pearl's mother, is also described as a dark, shadow type of character as "when the sunshine came, she was not there" (Hawthorne, 157). Is it that they were brought up as a child to think this way, or was it that as they got old they thought their lives had become worthless, therefore, they continued to not care? Similar themes are shown in the writings of Edgar Allen Poe, Washington Irving, and Nathaniel Hawthorne in their individual works "The Pit and the Pendulum," "The Devil and Tom Walker," and "Dr. Heidegger's Experiment." Unlike the Transcendentalists who saw the purity of an individual, Dark Romantics saw people as unrighteous and damnable and their writings reflect that people suffer, they see nature as something mysterious, and people have guilt from sinning. For the anti–clerical nature in The Scarlet Letter one may examine Reverend Dimmesdale, though he is a priest and seen as a model for the community, he in truth is " the worst of sinners" and is " an abomination"(126). This sort of satire of the clergy is not uncommon in Gothic novels, as often the clergy plays an evil or ,at least, a contemptible role. In Mathew Lewis's The Monk , a monk plays a rather evil role, and in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein which has a seeming lack or absence of any true greater power but man himself, this satirical view of religion is common across gothic writing. So too does this view occur in the Scarlet Letter. Hawthorne clearly holds some form of scorn towards organized religion and especially that strong faith of the Puritans. For anti–religion as a whole, one may observe how Hawthorne uses God to justify terrible acts through Chillingworth. Chillingworth justifies his reign of terror over Dimmesdale by telling Hester that he should have known that the scarlet letter must lie " blazing at the end of our path"(68). This sort of belief in fate and how all actions are predestined are what drive the conflict of this novel as Chillingworth justifies his actions by using fate and Dimmesdale's belief in fate leads him to accept Chillingworth's help as "the sin of rejecting the aid which Providence so manifestly held out"( 107). • 51. Comparison Of Dark Romanticism And Transcendentalism Transcendentalism is the belief that people and nature are inherently good. Transcendentalists believe that the institutionalization of society has corrupted the good and purity of people, and that instead of such institutions, self–reliance and individualism are where people perform at their best. The transcendental movement in the 19th century was met with a small wave of skeptics, most notably, authors such as Edgar Allen Poe and Nathaniel Hawthorne, who were part of a subgenre of Romanticism called Dark Romanticism. Literature within this subgenre was in direct contrast of the utopian ideas of transcendentalism; these writers did not believe in humanity's inherent perfection. Furthermore, Dark Romantic authors presented their characters as individuals prone to self– destruction and sin, unlike the transcendentalists who saw individuals as full of wisdom, divinity, and goodness. However, while Poe was deeply rooted in his dark romantic beliefs, Hawthorne came about only after experiencing for himself the pitfalls of reform. He wrote The Blithedale Romance, a satirical romantic fiction, based on his recollections of experiences he had after living at Brook Farm, a short–lived utopian community based on extrapolation of transcendental ideas. While initially excited for the possibilities of Transcendentalist reform, by the end of his time at Brook Farm, Hawthorne was ultimately disappointed. • 53. Scarlet Letter Dark Romanticism Dark Romanticism in a story is usually when there is violent events, emphasis on nature, emotion and evil characters. Dark Romanticism was at its peak during the 1800s. Nathaniel Hawthorne is known as a dark romantic writer for his stories such as "The Minister's Black Veil" (1843) and "The Birth–Mark" (1843). Hawthorne also shows dark romanticism in "The Scarlet Letter"(1850). In Nathaniel Hawthorne's book The Scarlet Letter" the author uses places and the characters to display dark romanticism to the readers. Throughout the book there is a lot of supernaturalism, most of which is displayed through the characters. Pearl is a great example of this, Pearl is constantly referred to as a "devil child" and is said to be born from sin. Pearl is also constantly exploiting others for their sins. The character who represents dark romanticism the most is Roger Chillingworth. In the text it says "In Mr Dimmesdale's secret closet, under lock and key, there was a bloody scourge." (Hawthorne 136) This quote shows he tries to cleanse himself of his sin by whipping himself. He also tries to punish himself by going days without sleep. This causes him to seem dark and depressed and the community thinks he is possessed by a demon. Hester is also a example of dark romanticism in the book. Hester comes into the story having already committed a horrible sin. • 55. Summary Of Dark Romanticism In The Raven By Edgar Allan Poe Dark romanticism was a peculiar literary period during the romanticism era which was led by Edgar Allan Poe and Nathaniel Hawthorne. It focused on opposing views from that of transcendentalist and leaned towards a gothic style. Poe and Hawthorne wrote about faulty human nature and of secret sin, that all humans hide. They also wrote with the purpose of starting a social reform without causing a huge uproar. Throughout their writing, the author's utilized literary tropes in order further their narrative and convey their message. Poe's most noticeable craft is that he was able to put a voice inside of a mind that is diseased and write psychological literature masterpieces. Poe utilized many literary tropes in order to further develop his narratives, one of them being "The Raven". "The Raven" is a story filled with symbolism and great writing delved into the effects of psychological trauma and a shift in the protagonist's mindset. The story takes place during midnight, which is commonly associated with dark forces and frightening plots, along with the gloomy feel of December. He is a bereaved lover filled with sorrow attempting to get his mind off of Lenore when he hears a knock on his door that " filled me with fantastic terrors never felt before" (Poe 375). It was the supposition of the lover that the knocking on the door was the "spirit of his mistress"( Poe 376) which demonstrates how deluded he was. However, when the raven enters his chamber it flies and lands above the head of Pallas, which signifies that his harmful mental obsession prevailed over human wisdom and logic, which are epitomized by Pallas. The protagonist comments to himself saying that the raven shall fly out of his life as others have done before, to which the raven replies "nevermore"(Poe 380). Once the narrator begins to become upset with the bird he states "thing of evil!"(Poe 383). He believes that the bird is a messenger from the afterlife and represents a demonic image in relation to Pluto, ruler of the underworld. The Plutonian sent bird is there to witness and expedite the protagonists descending into madness. He begins "weak and weary"(Poe 374), but as the narrator continues speaking to the raven he becomes more depressed and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Explore Carter's use of metamorphosis in The Bloody Chamber and comment on how it contributes to the Gothic element of the tale In The Tiger's Bride and The Courtship of Mr Lyon Carter uses transformation from human to animal and vice versa, exploring how two natures can exist in one person, and how transformation can reveal some idea of truth. Metamorphosis is essential in these tales and the idea of blurring reality and fantasy is traditional in the gothic genre. However, these stories can also be linked to a wider feminist ideology. The metamorphoses in the stories also could be said to be criticizing society's patriarchal, stereotypical gender roles, and for the heroine's in the tales, the metamorphosis into adulthood is sexual. ... • 59. Examples Of Dark Romanticism In Edgar Allan Poe Edgar Allan Poe was a typical representative of the 19th century literary movement – Dark Romanticism. This essay will look at one of his short stories – The Fall of the House of Usher – in its broad cultural and literary context, its place among other Poe's works, the story's stylistic features, and the main themes and characters. Speaking of the cultural context of the work, I would like to refer to Kerry Vermillion and Quinn McCumber, who considered the works of Edgar Allan Poe to be influenced by two opposite ideas popular in his time: Empiricism and Transcendentalism. While the former claimed that people could acquire knowledge about reality and truth by perceiving the physical world through the senses, the latter argued that reality dwells ... Whether the inherited curse was incurred upon the House and Pyncheons due to the Maule's curse alone or was their own folly liable and blameworthy too. This perhaps is a conflicting issue of the text. One can interpret this dichotomy in both ways. • 63. Dark Romanticism Vs Transcendentalism Essay Although Transcendentalism was the first great American literary period, Dark Romanticism followed closely behind, bringing a dark twist to the previous writing style. Dark Romantic writers, such as Poe, Hawthorne, and Melville, saw Transcendentalism as overly optimistic. Dark Romantics wanted to change literature written during the time. While Transcendentalists wrote about the need for social reform, Dark Romantics wrote about characters failing at change (VanSpanckeren). Both styles believed nature held a spiritual force, but Dark Romantics viewed this force as evil and mysterious. Romantic writers believed that people were prone to sin. This contrasted the Transcendentalist belief that all people are essentially good. Following the popularity ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Dark Romanticism is an American literary subgenre emerged in the nineteenth century from the philosophical movement called transcendentalism. Dark Romanticism, broadly speaking, rely very little on perfection as an innate quality of the human being, a key idea of the transcendentalists (Howard, 1). As consequence, its characters are prone to sin and self–destruction, since by nature, they are not wise or divine beings. One of the most representative authors of the current is Poe, who is ... The reader is exposed from the beginning to the narrator's style and without realizing it will be ruled by the logic of that fictional world, in which melancholy and spiritual impatience reigns. Faithful to the principles of the author, the first detailed words of description of the setting announce the decadent character of the composition– "All the main lines of action are supported by a systematic elaboration of detail" (Robinson, 79). The Fall of the House of Usher begins with the description of the place where all the facts of the story will develop: "It was a dark and soundless day near the end of the year, and clouds were hanging low in the heavens... through country with little life or beauty; and in the early evening I came within view of the House of Usher" (Poe, 22). At exterior levels, the presence of a crack crosses the whole structure of the house: "a crack making its way from the top down the wall until it became lost in the dark waters of the lake." (Poe, 23). The dark aspect is present in the obscure interiors of the house: "Dark covering hung upon the walls. The many chairs and tables had been used for a long, ... • 73. Dark Romanticism In The Raven By Edgar Allan Poe The Raven is a poem written in January of 1845 by Edgar Allan Poe. It was written during the period of romanticism, a time when many people took the opposite ideology of rationalism, believing that imagination, nature, feeling, and nature are more important than logic and society. These ideas are infused into Poe's poem, The Raven. However, this work is placed into the sub genre of Dark Romanticism, whose works deal with feelings rather than reason, and viewed events as symbols pointing beyond menial life. There are many elements in The Raven that correctly identify the poem in the Dark Romanticism genre. Incorporations of elements such as the supernatural, the search for truth in nature, and the exploration of evil in the poem The Raven rightly classify the work in the genre of Dark Romanticism. One of the elements that helps classify The Raven as a work in the Dark Romanticism period is its use of the supernatural. One of the characteristics of the Romanticism realm of literature is that it explored the world of the supernatural. This aspect is heavy in the Raven. One example is in lines 28–30, reading "And the only word there spoken was the whispered word, "Lenore?" This I whispered, and an echo murmured back the word, "Lenore!"– Merely this and nothing more." This quote is interesting, because in the beginning of the poem, it mentions the setting is his bedroom. The narrator is home alone, and his love, Lenore, is dead. Another journey in and out of the darkness of the story is the moral darkness of the story when the main character makes more and more twisted decisions as the story goes on. The last way movement adds to the meaning of the story is during the times when the actual narrator is describing what is happening while listening to Marlow's story. Marlow's story starts being told on a ship on the Thames in daylight. As the story is told, time passes (as it should) and the sun sets. By the end of the story, it is the middle of the night and the people listening to the story can barely see each other or Marlow at all and the ship that they are on hasn't moved at all. The transition from day to night outside the story represents the listeners to Marlow's story realizing how dark and twisted he actually is and the lack of actual movement on the ship in the Thames represents how Marlow has been this twisted since the beginning of the story. • 77. The Dark Side Of Human Nature In Nathaniel Hawthorne And... Nathaniel Hawthorne and Edgar Allen Poe were extremely successful gothic or dark romantic authors of the 19th century. The two authors wrote a plethora of short stories that strayed from the rationalist styles of the 18th century and paved the way for other dark romantic authors. Romanticism focuses on emotions and nature while rationalism focuses on logic and reasoning. Hawthorne and Poe display the darker side of human nature throughout all of their works. Three especially good examples of this particular style are Hawthorne's "Dr. Heidegger's Experiment" as well as Poe's "The Tell–Tale Heart" and "The Black Cat." Hawthorne's short story "Dr. Heidegger's Experiment" highlights four major vices that humanity as a whole struggles with. For each of the four vices there is an elderly character that has failed at life due to them. The first such character is Widow Wycherly; her vice is vanity, the next is Mr. Medbourne; his vice is greed, after him is Colonel Killigrew; his vice is lust, and finally Mr. Gascoigne; his vice is corruption. All four of these characters are invited into Dr. Heidegger's lab to partake in an experiment. They are given water that is believed to be from the fountain of youth. They will be given another chance to right their wrongs and fix their vices. Upon consumption of the water, the four elderly people begin to act young again and return to their old ways of vanity, greed, lust, and corruption.
