How did you use media technologies in the
construction and research, planning and
evaluation stages?
Research
When we got to the research stage we used the iMac’s that were available to us. Using the software Safari, we were
able to find information about our artist drake via different websites such as Google and Wikipedia. We were also able
to go onto social media platforms (Instagram and Twitter) on our iPhones to have a look further into our artist to see
their personality and their dress sense so we can get inspiration on how we should present our own artist.
Using Google Maps in our research for suitable locations was helpful as it allowed us to have a wide range of options of
places to record our music video. Once we had found locations that best fitted our needs, the tools on Google Maps
was magnificent as it showed us various directions on how to get to our destination. This saved us time as we didn’t
necessarily need to go these locations to see if it was suitable for us, we were able to do it on the iMacs.
Going onto the website Youtube was useful as it enabled us to analyse real music videos as well as previous A2 music
videos to get more of an insight onto what we had to incorporate in our own music video and also look at all some
artists conform/subvert to the connotations of different genre and how we could apply it to our music video.
We researched digipaks from other artists within our chosen genre on Google Images to see the types of conventions
are typically followed. From this, we were able to find what we needed to include in our digipak in order for it to be
successful and to appeal to our targeted audience.
By having access to iTunes on the iMacs was a great help as we were able to purchase our chosen song Redemption by
Drake. We had to purchase the song on iTunes as there was no other way of being able to obtain the song due to
Copyright issues.
Planning
As we got to the planning stage, we found it difficult to plan
effectively without any contact. Due to this predicament, we
all downloaded the app Whatsapp on our iPhones to make a
group chat where we can discuss our ideas and organise
ourselves with all the equipment we needed, methods of
transportation, what costume our artist had to wear etc.
Our phones came to greater help as we were able to obtain
maps using the internet or the maps that is installed within
our phones. We were also able to get precise times of train
and buses that we had to catch from apps that were available
on the AppStore.
Production
We used the Sony Cyber-shot DSC HX300 throughout the course of making the our music video as well as putting
together our analysis. This device contained different settings such as ‘movie mode’ which produced good quality shots
in our music video. The camera allowed us to include a range of camera angles and shots. We were able to look back at
what we had recorded with the playback button, which was extremely handy as some of the shots we took needed
some tweaking. The camera in general was really easy to familiarise yourself with and very comfortable with the hand
grips. We couldn’t have been provided with a better recording device!
We used iMovie, that was available to us on the iMac, to piece our music video together. The functions of the iMac
came to good use as we were able to simply insert the SD card from the camera into the iMac and quickly insert our
videoed content straight into iMovie. iMovie provided us with a load of effects and transitions, as well as tools that
could edit the colour of our recordings and the ability of slowing down and speeding up clips. A limitation was that we
were not able to create the effects that we had in mind, however it was easily overcome by just adapting to the
software.
As part of our music video, you should have seen a shot that is in a selfie position. We used an iPhone to record that
shot as we thought that it would give off a good effect. The resolution of the camera was good, however not as good as
the Sony camera that we had used.
Another software that we used that was on the iMac was Adobe Photoshop. This software was excellent in the creation
of our digipak and tour advert. We were able to use the internet to get hold of a template for the digipak and extract so
it could be used in Photoshop. There is so much choice within the software, however some require more skills and
experience with the software than others. That being said we were still able to include everything we wanted to in our
ancillary texts.
Evaluation
Overall, we ended up using a range of hardware (such as
the iMac and our mobile phones) and software (such as
Photoshop, iMovie) during the course of putting together
our music video. It was very useful as I begun to
familiarise myself with using iMovie as it was my first
time using the software. I found that it was challenging as
there was so many functions however with the help of
my teacher and peers, I was able to persevere and
produce a successful music video. From the creation of
the ancillary texts, my knowledge within Photoshop has
broadened as I didn’t know how to use magic rubber tool.
