1. In what ways does
your media product
use develop or
challenge forms
and conventions of
real media products
2. My media product uses conventions in
various different ways.
In my preproduction stage I used examples of
other trailers and posters to evaluate the
codes and conventions to use them into my
magazine, poster and trailer.
3. House styles are a main convention that I used in
my magazine and poster as most magazines
have a general style in all of their magazines
such as empire an FILM all have a house style,
which I have tried to use in my magazine. I have
also tired to stick to the conventions of music
posters with the style of other movie posters; this is
evident with the portrait of the main character
and the enlarged title and including the CBS
logo to inform my audience of the institutions
used.
I have also incorporated other films in my movie
magazine as it makes it seem more realistic as
other film magazines have the newest releases,
which makes it seem more appealing to the
audience as if those films appeal to them they’d
be more likely to buy the magazine.
4. My trailer takes forms and conventions from real
horror/thrillers such as the darkness and the Mise-en-
scene; we tried to make these as realistic as possible as I
feel that this makes it more realistic to the audience and
therefore increasing the fear factor and anticipation in
the film.
The settings we used were very stereotypical which
shows that we have used the conventions of a normal
horror film and by making the characters stereotypical I
feel this makes the trailer more relatable and would
increase the interest to the audience and people outside
of the target audience.
5. We have developed the conventions in the trailer by not
giving anything full away but giving clues to the watcher
and would make them want to watch it to find the
resolution, this is against most conventions because
they usually either give away the resolution or they
don’t give anything away which may be unappealing to
some people so we tried to adapt this to fit it in our
trailer.
We have incorporated a point of view shot which is
quite typical in horror films as we felt this helps the
watcher relate to the actor and increase the fear in the
trailer.
6. Conclusion
Overall I think that we met but developed the
typical conventions of real media products quite
a lot in our trailer but I think it worked well overall
as it made the trailer more professional and seem
more enticing to our target audience and
hopefully to people who don’t usually watch
horror films.
I also used these conventions in the ancillary
tasks for the poster and magazine front cover but
adapted them enough to be quite original so it
all worked together well to be successful.
