CSS Grade 11 – Second Quarter- Week 2
Objectives
MELC: Motherboard and its components
Specific Objectives
o To be able to know the motherboard and its components.
o To be able to understand and explain the motherboard and its components.
o To put in mind the importance of its components and its functionality.
What is it
The Motherboard
The motherboard is the backbone that ties the computer's components together at one
spot and allows them to talk to each other. Without it, none of the computer pieces, such
as the CPU, GPU, or hard drive, could interact. Total motherboard functionality is
necessary for a computer to work well.
Components and its function
2. CPU socket or CPU
slot
Contains one or more mechanical components providing mechanical and
electrical connections between a microprocessor and a printed circuit
board (PCB). This allows for placing and replacing the central processing
unit (CPU) without soldering.
Memory slot or RAM
slot
Allows computer memory (RAM) chip/stick to be inserted into the
computer. Depending on the motherboard, there will usually be 2 to
4 memory slots.
BIOS Stands for Basic Input/Output System. BIOS is a "read-only" memory,
which consists of low-level software that controls the system hardware
and acts as an interface between the operating system and the
hardware. Most people know the term BIOS by another name—device
drivers, or just drivers. BIOS is essentially the link between the
computer hardware and software in a system.
Complementary
Metal Oxide
Semiconductor
(CMOS) Battery
Supplies power to store BIOS settings and keep the real-time clock
running.
Peripheral
Component
Interconnect (PCI)
Slot
PCI is the most common expansion bus in a PC and other
hardware platforms. Buses carry signals such as data, memory
addresses, power, and control signals from component to
component. Other types of buses include ISA and EISA.
Expansion buses enhance the PCs capabilities by allowing users
to add missing features in their computers by slotting adapter
cards into expansion slots.
Rear Ports Connectors and ports for connecting the computer to external
devices such as display ports, audio ports, USB ports, Ethernet
ports, PS/2 ports etc.
12V/4pin ATX
Power Supply
Connector
Connects to the 4-pin power cable of a power supply unit which
supplies power to the CPU.
24 pin ATX Power
Supply Connector
Connects to the 24-pin ATX power cable of a power supply unit
which supplies power to the motherboard.
IDE Connector Connects to older hard drive disks and optical drives for data
transfer.
Have been replaced over by SATA connectors
Front Panel
Connector
Connects to the power switch, reset switch, power LED, hard drive
LED and front audio ports of a computer case.
Northbridge
Chipset
Is a chip inside a computer that connects the central processing unit
(CPU) to other primary components in the system. These components
include RAM (a.k.a. system memory), the frontside bus (FSB), PCI
Express cards, and the AGP card
3. Southbridge
Chipset
Is an IC on the motherboard responsible for the hard drive controller, I/O
controller and integrated hardware. Integrated hardware can include the
sound card and video card if on the motherboard, USB, PCI, ISA, IDE,
BIOS, and Ethernet.
AGP Slot Stands for "Accelerated Graphics Port." AGP is a type of
expansion slot designed specifically for graphics cards.
SATA Connectors Connects to modern hard disk drives, solid state drives and optical
drives for data transfer.
Rear Ports
PS/2 Port The PS/2 port is a 6-pin mini-DIN connector used for connecting
keyboards and mouse to a PC compatible computer system.
USB port Is a standard cable connection interface for personal computers and
consumer electronics devices. USB stands for Universal Serial Bus, an
industry standard for short-distance digital data communications. USB
ports allow USB devices to be connected to each other with and
transfer digital data over USB cables.
D-SUB Port D-Sub and DVI: standard interfaces for PC use. ... When used as a
monitor interface, a D-Sub port is also known as a VGA port, an analog
connection standard that's been around for some time. The connector is
a DE-15 connector with 15 pins in three rows, often referred to as a
"mini-D-Sub 15-pin" or "D-Sub 15-pin" connector
Digital Visual
Interface (DVI)
Is a video display interface developed by the Digital Display Working
Group (DDWG). The digital interface is used to connect a video source,
such as a video display controller, to a display device, such as a
computer monitor.
Optical Digital
Audio Output
An optical digital audio connection is used to send digital
audio signals between devices. It supports uncompressed PCM
stereo audio, and 5.1/7.1 Dolby Digital and DTS multichannel audio for
people with surround sound systems.
High-Definition
Multimedia
Interface (HDMI)
Is a proprietary audio/video interface for transmitting uncompressed
video data and compressed or uncompressed digital audio data from
an HDMI-compliant source device, such as a display controller, to a
compatible computer monitor, video projector, digital television
LAN port Is also known as an Ethernet port. Both terms refer to exactly the same
socket on computers, servers, modems, Wi-Fi routers, switches or
other network devices.
4. HD Audio Port The HD_AUDIO cable connects the front audio/mic jack connectors
from your case to your motherboard, so they can be used. ... You can
plug there what you want : speakers, headphones, etc...
eSATA Connector eSATA is a SATA connector accessible from outside the computer, to
provide a signal (but not power) connection for external storage
devices. eSATAp combines the functionality of an eSATA and a
USB port, and a source of power in a single connector.
