I find Sir Winston Churchill to be one of the most inspiring public leaders in
recent history. Most famous for his leadership of the United Kingdom during
World War II, Winston Churchill was a masterful orator, British army officer,
historian, writer, and artist. While serving in campaigns in India, Sudan, and
the Second Boer War, Winston Churchill attracted the world’s attention as a
war correspondent, writing pieces depicting the war efforts. He continued his
writing throughout his life, authoring two biographies, a novel, his memoirs,
and other works, including The Second World War and A History of the English-
Speaking Peoples. In recognition of his enormous literary contributions and
stirring oratories, Winston Churchill was honored with the Nobel Prize in
Literature in 1953. Several prestigious institutes of higher learning awarded
Winston Churchill honorary degrees, including Harvard University and McGill
University in Canada.

Entering politics in 1900 as a member of Parliament, Winston Churchill became
the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom in May 1940, five months after the
country entered the Second World War. As Prime Minister, Winston Churchill
valiantly led the nation through five additional years of war against Germany
and the other Axis powers to the Allied Forces’ victory in 1945.
Although Winston Churchill lost his reelection bid in 1945, he returned to the
position of Prime Minister in 1951, serving for four years. Winston Churchill’s
death 10 years later in 1965 was marked with a state funeral, attended by
numerous world dignitaries.
