Power Of Religion In Aztec Society
What would happen if more than 2,000 people were brutally killed by one nation every day? The
world would be outraged and aghast. What if the killing continued for 150 years? This is what
happened in Aztec society about 497 years ago.The Aztecs lived in the valley of Mexico from 1350
to 1519. They first migrated to the shores of Lake Texcoco around 1100 CE. Their religious beliefs
led them to practicing brutal human sacrifice, which explains why they were distrusted and disliked
by many groups living in that area. Historians should emphasize human sacrifice when talking about
Aztecs because it was brutal and on such a large scale. It also showed the power of religion in Aztec
society.
Aztecs religious practices were brutal and many times

Comparison of the Aztecs and Sumerians
Most everyone knows about the great civilizations of the Sumerians and the Aztecs. If anyone were
to visit the land that the Sumerians inhabited, they might not be able to imagine how these people
were able to survive and flourish. The land there is dry and hot, with extreme temperatures. Hardly
any vegetation survives in the area. However, the Sumerians did find a way in which they could live
in the area and live bountifully (Landau 10–12). The Aztec Empire, on the other hand, appeared in
Central America at a time when it seemed impossible to begin a civilization on an island in the
middle of a lake. The island was not big enough for a thriving population. Nevertheless, the Aztecs
overcame these challenges, flourished and became a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Aztecs did not use letters to write; instead they used small pictures called glyphs (Allen). These
systems of writing were so complex that only scribes could write. Because of its complexity and the
time it took to learn, there were most likely only a small handful of scribes. Scribes were important
in both the Sumerian and Aztec cultures because the scribes were the only ones who could write.
This may have been because the job was very time consuming. Since writing was such a
complicated system few people mastered this ability. The shortage of scribes could be accounted for
the tradition of scribes being taught at private school, which means they must come from wealthy
backgrounds. Scribes were very important in these civilizations' cities. Undoubtedly, because of
their abilities the citizens were proud of their scribes (Crystal). For example, the scribes in the Aztec
civilization read records to elites, so they could learn more of their history.
In every civilization people believe in some type of religion. The same is true for the Sumerians and
Aztecs. Both of these civilizations believed that there were gods and goddesses who they needed to
please to ensure them a good and prosperous life.
The Sumerians, like many agricultural people, had a polytheistic religion, which means that the
Sumerians believed in and worshipped many gods (Hooker). The gods were incredibly powerful and
the Sumerians worshipped the gods because they

The Gods Of Aztec Religion
The Gods of Aztec
The Aztec culture was one of the most complex and detailed cultures that has ever been around to
date. Just how complex the culture was the religion followed suit. The Aztec religion was an
intricate part of their way of life. The Aztec's believed in a completely different way than most
religions are today. We will discuss some of the early beginnings of the religion and how it got
started all the way to the details of what and how they believed and "prayed". As most people know
the Aztec's as well as the Mayan culture believed heavily in a many gods, sacrifices, and all nature
around them. We will focus on each aspect of their beliefs and what it entailed. In the beginning of
the Aztec religion they believed in three top Gods named Huitzilopochtili, Tezcatlipoca, and
Quetzalcoatl. Below them were also 4 sub gods and below them were many more gods each of
possessing different powers. The main three Gods were the creation Gods, the Aztec religion
believed that they each failed time and time again to create the world each time destroying it.
Tezacatlipoca was the first God who attempted to create the world for man, when he failed he turned
into a jaguar and destroyed the world. Once the Gods got over the differences and formed a council
to create the world. Quetzalcoatl is the God who created humans, as the Gods failed time and time
again creating the world, they attempted to make humans time and time again. It is believed that

Tenochtitlan Influence On The Aztecs
Kaavye Lal
Period 4 In Northern Mexico, a group of people known as the Aztecs arrived and became the
dominant tribe in the region. Since the 13th century the Aztecs developed their capital city of
Tenochtitlan as well as controlled their capital city of Tenochtitlan and their rival's city–states.
However in the 16th century invaders from Spain led by conquistador, Hernan Cortez, put an end to
the Aztecs after taking Tenochtitlan ("Beyond Human Sacrifice", 2002; "Montezuma, II", 1998).
Though the Aztec's civilization crumbled, much of their art remains to tell stories of their religion
and rituals that they practiced. Their art included statues of gods, ceremonial clothing, and
illustrations depicting a warrior society built upon human sacrifice. ... Show more content on

The reason is that much of what the Aztec's created displays the brutal is acts they did on their
enemies. In museums exhibits that show Aztec work often have illustrations of them using prisoners
of war for their bloodletting ceremonies, battles with other tribes, and wearing the skin of their
victims ("Terrible Beauty", 2002). Also the weapons that they use such as daggers with serrated
edges and bows. This gives people the idea that the Aztecs were obsessed with death, but the Aztecs
practiced agriculture as well and other works of art they created represent gods that controlled wind,
the sun, and rain ("Beyond Human Sacrifice", 2002). So the Aztecs were more well rounded they

Why Is Aztec Agriculture Important
Well the aztecs had to major ways that they believed in. one was human sacrifice and the other was
aztec agriculture. the one that i chose was aztec agriculture. I chose that because it seemed easir to
me and because we use stuf that they had come up with.like the canals and the ittagaint and the
islands. The aztecs were around 1350 to 1519. during that time they were in mexico city. And where
they were there was 300,000 thousand people.they were not in a very big area. the religion i would
stress about the most is aztec agriculture.and the three reasons that i'm gonna talk about is large
scale, clever construction, and cultrera everyday life.
The reason why large scale is so important is because of what they did to survive. Since hey only
had 129 miles of land. they had lots of people "300,000" and little land. they were smart enough to
figure out how to get more. They had these islands and they would grow there crops on those
islands and since they didn't want them to go away the put palm trees to stop them from going away.
they had canals going through them and they are the one that started irrigation. if they hadn't done
what they did with the irrigation we wouldn't have the water we need for our crops today. they

They were clever because they had created canals for their crops and they started irrigation, and
started anglers for their islands. TheY used trees for as there angers for the islands with the crops on

use the canals and the irrigation, we use thll of that today. We use it for our oranges or lemons and
all kinds of crops like that. If they hadn't done what they did with the canals and the irrigation we

Religion: The Rise And Fall Of The Aztec Civilization
The Aztec Empire is located in the southern regions of modern day Mexico. The capital city,
Tenochtitlan, was built in 1325 and was one of the biggest cities in the world. The Aztec culture
grew to 15 million people until 1521 when the empire fell due to Spanish invasions. (Griffin, S.
2013). The main point of discussion is that mythology and religion shaped the lives of the ancient
Aztec civilisation. Religion was an important part of the Aztec existence many events and rituals
took place because for their religious beliefs and mythology. (Crystal, E. 2016). This essay will
discuss some examples of events that happened because of the Aztec's beliefs are the rituals that

The loyalty to their faith was extreme and tricked their leader into making the wrong decisions
which partly caused the fall of the empire. Hernan Cortes was head of the Spanish fleet that arrived

outbreak of diseases, such as small pox, the Aztecs were not immune to. Montezuma was captured

One of the first early Mexica states linked to Teotihuacan would be the Toltec and their capitol of
Tula. Tula seems to have started as a city of immigrants with people coming to it from many
different places. One very notable people being the Teotihuacano after their city declined (Evans
410–411). They worshipped gods like Tlaloc, the successor of the storm god of Teotihuacan as well
as Quetzalcoatl and Tezcatlipoca (Evans 411). Militarism is something that the Toltec might have
picked up from the ancient civilization as well. Many Teotihuacan military style designs can be
found in Tula architecture (Evans 417–418). In their society there were many highly skilled artisans
(Evans 418). The land although high in altitude had the proper water sources to allow for intense
irrigation and cultivation (Evans 410). The Toltec while not an expansive state can easily be linked
through their religion and militarism both to Teotihuacan and later to the Aztecs.
Aztec culture and society is the final step in the journey from the culture of Teotihuacan. It shares
some similarities with its neighbors and predecessors, while also having its differences. It has a
strong connection to Tula as the Mexica tribes stayed there for a time when Tula was at its height
(Evans 429). To really understand their society though its best to begin by explaining how the
Aztecs or the triple alliance as it should be called came to power. The Aztecs are described as a rags

Summary Of King Montezuma And The Last Stand Of The Aztecs
Conquistador: Hernán Cortés, King Montezuma, and the Last Stand of the Aztecs written by Buddy
Levy tells the story of a conquistador named Hernán Cortés who sailed to an unknown land and in
less than two years, conquered the entire Aztec empire. Levy addresses many issues but is mainly
concerned about the differences between the two cultures, which causes an issue between both the
Spaniards and the Aztecs, and argues that people cannot take over an empire without clashing
cultures. Religion and culture have been an issue then and now and although people are free to
practice their own religion and culture, it is inappropriate for the Spaniards to impose their religion
and culture to the Aztecs as this could also cause tension between ethnic groups. ... Show more

For example, in chapter 1 Levy writes "Cortés then brazenly ordered the men to smash the
idols...carpenters erected a wooden cross, as well as a figure of the Virgin Mary. These were the new
idols the people of Cozumel were to worship." Cortés broke the people of Cozumel's idols in order
to spread Christianity and power. Although Cortés has the right to practice his culture and is
spreading Christianity, he does not respect other people's beliefs therefore causing fear and doubt
toward the Spaniards. Another example of cultural difference is the Indians' sacrificial offerings to
their gods. Cortés and his soldiers were horrified at the fact that the Aztecs and Indians would
sacrifice children and sometimes eat the humans. Although this was taboo for the Spaniards, the
people of Mexico thought it would bring their empire wealth and

Ancient Civilization And The Aztec Civilization Essay
One of the greatest ancient Mesoamerican civilizations lies right below modern day Mexico City.
(Yellow,16) Legends have been told about the history of Mexico City, but not until recently was the
great city of Tenochtitlan uncovered while construction workers were digging in Mexico City. There
are very few physical remains of the ancient city today, but the history of this great civilization is
still with us. This civilization was created by the Aztecs, who built their empire in 1325 AD.
(Yellow,15). The capital of the Aztecs, Tenochtitlan, flourished rapidly as their life revolved around
their religion, which greatly helped them expand their empire. Religion played a key role in the
ancient Aztec society and consisted of numerous gods, ceremonies, and temples. According to Aztec
legend, the Aztec civilization came about when the god Huitzilopochtli told his people to find a new
home for their civilization. The people traveled and eventually ended up at Lake Texcoco. This is
where they see an eagle perched on a cactus eating a snake, which was the gods sign that this will be
their permanent home. So, the Aztecs settled on an island inside of Lake Texcoco, called
Tenochtitlan. By listening to their god, they began one of the greatest civilizations in Mesoamerica,
which would continue to flourish until 1521 AD (yellow 16) The Aztec people had a polytheistic
religion. This means that the Aztecs worshiped hundreds of gods,, and they all had a certain role in

How Did Tenochtitlans Build The Aztec Empire
Tenochtitlan was the most important city in the Aztec empire. Their culture, society, and religion all
revolved around the city. The Aztec empire, flourished between c1345 and 1521CE.
Legend has it the Aztec people fled their home city of Aztlan, no one knows the exact location of
Aztlan, but we do know that the Mexica founded Tenochtitlan in 1325. The exact reason for the
Aztecs building the new city of Tenochtitlan was for Huitzilopochtli, god of war, he ordered the
higher–ranking priests to look for "prickly pear cactus and build a temple in his honor." The Aztecs
followed the order and found a place on an island in the middle of lake Texcoca. In the early years

when Cortés reaches Vera Cruz in March 1519 he names himself, mayor, he then gives the crew no
option to go back to Cuba because he burns the ships, its Victory or Death. In Vera Cruz Cortés

for battle, the Spaniards were on their way to Tenochtitlan with 450 troops in company. On the road
to Tenochtitlan they found the Aztecs blocked the roads with large trees in order to slow down any
enemy troops but they were unopposed. Now while the Spanish were coming there was a legend
about a white man with a beard that was Quetzalcoatl coming back. This is the reason the Aztecs

Montezuma the leader at the time. The people hoped the gifts would please the Spanish and make

Spanish and Aztec Cultural Encounter
On November 8, 1519, Spanish leader, Hernan Cortes landed in modern day Mexico, bringing along
six hundred Spaniards and a lot of native allies. The Aztecs, who were natives in Mexico, welcomed
Cortez with opened arms because they believed he was one of their gods, Quetzalcoatl. From the
beginning, they were willing to share their land and wealth with the Spaniards but they Spaniards
did not want to share this land and began to continue with their plan to conquer the land.
Throughout this two–year campaign where the Spanish and Aztecs were fighting for ownership of
the land, and after thousands of people killed, the Spanish conquered the land, seizing the existence
of the Aztec Empire. This cultural encounter changed the lives of both the Aztec and Spaniards
greatly by the change in language, religion, and the benefits this take–over had on the Spanish
Empire. Once central Mexico was taken over by the Spaniards, the use of the Aztec language,
Nahuatl, was quickly put to an end. The Spaniards saw that the two different languages kept a
separation between the two cultures and decided to force everyone under the Spanish rule to speak
Spanish. Spanish is still the language spoken in Mexico even after all of the different attacks and
takeovers. The Aztec's did not like this idea of taking away their language. Most of them were

The Aztecs And The Aztec Religion
During what is to be believed around 15,000 years ago, civilization was starting to develop around
North and South America. One of the last societies to arise were the Aztecs. The Aztecs originated
from groups of people that were migrating from a lake named, Aztlan, towards the valley of
Mexico. They transformed from just a small group of explores into a successful empire during this
time. Aztecs had a very unique culture, their religion influenced most of their life. Their religion was
expressed through their rituals, everyday life, and art. Even before they settled down, the Aztecs
depended on their Gods to guide them to choose the perfect location for them. That is an illustration
of how much the trusted and respected their Gods.
The Aztec religion had a mix of mythology which is seen through the Aztecs God's uprising story
and their significance. In the Aztecs religion, the people had multiple gods that they observed and
prayed to. Their Gods ranged from nature spirts to supporter of the Gods. One of their Gods, was
named Quetzalcoatl. This deity represented the four major aspects of their forces, their creation,
virtue, learning and culture. Another influential God was Tlaloc, the God of rain. Tlaloc was a
representation of the atmosphere and everything that happened that was impacted by the weather.
Along with the Gods representing significant topics, the stories that led to that unique spirt
becoming a God influenced their life as well.

Religion played a very important role in the Aztec and Inca culture. Religious rituals consisted of
human sacrifice and polytheism. Their deities were inspired by nature and the earth's physical
makeup. Both appear to be similar but peel back the onion and notable differences reveal

such advanced civilizations.

How Was Society Organised In The Aztecs
Intro – How was society organised? / Government
Aztecs were the native American people who controlled northern Mexico from 1325 to 1521.
According to Aztec legend, they came from a place named "Aztlan", a city from northern Mexico.
Aztec Families didn't really own land; land was owned by the calpulli. The calpulli was the lowest
form of Aztec government, which was comprised of a group of families. The local government
system was around long before the Aztec empire.A group of several calpulli was called a altepetl,
and the leader of these altepetl held a lot of power within the Aztec government.

As the great city of Tenochtitlan was built on rich, swampy, soil, the main method of Aztec farming
was using chinampas. Chinampas were roughly 30 by 2.5 meter long plots constructed in a lake bed.
These plots were then filled in with mud and vegetation, leaving a small canal for canoes to pass, as
well as offering irrigation.
Using the Xiuhpohualli calendar, the Aztecs had certain farming seasons to know what was the best
times of year to farm certain crops. These seasons were named xopan ("green time of year"),
tonallan ("time of heat"), tonalco ("during the heat") & cecuizpan ("time of cold"). The main crops
planted were maize, squash and beans, and were planted in the wet seasons.
What were the civilisation's religious beliefs?
Religion was very important in Aztec life, and the aztecs worshipped their many gods daily. Each
god ruled a human activity, or an object. As the Aztec culture was based on farming, lots of their
god were god of agriculture, or certain crops.
The Aztecs believed that the god's powers needed to be recognised in the form of gifts, and it was
believed that gifting the gods would prevent catastrophes from happening. This is why many
monuments were constructed where sacrificial ceremonies took place.

The Role Of Tonatiuh In The Aztec Religion
Tonatiuh was considered to be the sun god in the fifth era, he was one of the most important gods in
the Aztec religion. Tonatiuh was a patron of the Aztec gods, and he would assist the people by
supplying them with warmth and fertility. The Aztec would worship him by sacrificing the hearts of
their war prisoners, they did this to keep the sun moving in orbit. The people did this form of
sacrifice to repay the gods, they believed that the sun appeared in the heavens, but it refused to
move so the gods sacrificed their own hearts to convince the sun to move. Tonatiuh was given the
role of the sun god through great sacrifice, in the earlier times a council was formed between the
gods to decide who the next sun god would be, they established that the god worthy of being given
this role would have to prove himself by sacrificing their own life to preserve human life forever. ...

Ancient Aztec religion was different interaction of gods, dates, directions and colors. The most

They believed that the sun would not rise each day without the offering of blood (Gleeson,

Mayan priests would nourish the gods with their blood caused by piercing their tongues, ears,
extremities, or genitals. Sacrifice had other practices like prayer, offerings of food, sports, and even
dramas. The heart was the most sacred body part that the Aztec offered to the gods (Forgotten
Empires: The Aztec Empire | Discovery History Documentary). The Aztecs developed the idea that
gods were nourished better by living hearts of captives. If the captive was brave, the better the
sacrifice. Aztecs thought their gods would turn against them if they were not given human
sacrifices. This belief led to many wars to find victims both captured in war and those paid to the
Aztecs as tribute by the people who were conquered. Human sacrifices were made to make the sun
rise the next day. They believed that if the sun god were not fed human hearts and blood the sun
would not rise and the world would end in disaster. The Aztecs believed that their special purpose in
life was to delay that destruction. They sacrificed to the gods to avoid destruction for as long as

roles. In the book, Mexico an illustrated History it explains, "Men were expected to be unflinching
in the face of danger, and able to withstand pain. Women were expected to be modest and
unassertive, their world restricted to the household. Children were cherished, but taught to respect
discipline and the authority of elders." The Mexican culture still follows these traditions. Just like
the Aztecs, in the Mexican culture men were raise to be machos. Men are usually the head of the
family and were expect to go in to the world and provide for his family. Modern day women are still
changing and everyday there is more opportunities for women, but even with the new opportunities,
some women still decide to take the traditional route; they get married and decide to take the role of
a housewife. Modern day children are still raise with the same values, they are taught to respect
their parents and the elderly. Just like the Aztecs, Mexicans take their traditions very seriously.
Mexicans also take the admiration of sports from the Aztecs. The Aztec had their own version of
football called Tlachi which was later updated to soccer. Aztecs did not have a religion. Their
religion was based in pleasing their god and getting rewards in return for this. The Aztec thought

The Aztec people were certain kinds of ethnic groups of central Mexico. The Aztec Empire or the
Triple Alliance began as an alliance of three city–states: Mexico–Tenochtitlan, Texcoco, and
Tlacopan. These three city–states ruled the area in and around the Valley of Mexico from 1428 until
they were defeated by the combined forces of the Spanish conquistadores and their native allies
under Hernán Cortés in 1521. As in modern societies, religion and education were important parts of
Aztec culture. Large portions of these groups spoke the Nahuatl language.
Aztec religion is the Mesoamerican religion of the Aztecs. Like other Mesoamerican religions, it
had elements of human sacrifice in connection with a large number of religious festivals which were
held according to patterns of the Aztec calendar. Religion in the Aztec culture was a very important
thing that was practiced. Stone or clay sculptures would be made and dressed with a deity's clothing.

Varieties of Nahuatl are spoken by an estimated 1.5 million Nahua people, most of whom lived in
Central Mexico. All Nahuan languages are indigenous to Mesoamerica. The Nahuatl language was
spoken during about the 7th century CE. While the Spanish were trying to take over Mexico, the
Aztec Empire expanded to a large part of central Mexico. This caused the variety of Nahuatl
languages to be altered to some degree.
There are a many similarities between the Aztec culture and our modern culture. For example,
although they believed in four gods and used human sacrifices (which we obviously don't), and we
believe in one god, religion is important in both cultures. Their education system is similar to ours,
with education is mandatory and boys and girls can go to school together. Their language spread due
to population movements like English did when people moved to North

Aztec Weapon Essay
According to the ancient Aztec religion, it took the gods five tries to create the world. The first four
attempts had failed because the gods were fighting among themselves. Each creator–god would take
a turn being the sun in order for the world to function properly so that it would be habitable. The
gods had a council and decided that Nanauatl, a lowly, humble god, would have to sacrifice himself
to become the sun. But there was a major problem with this, he was not moving. It was then that the
gods realized that they would also have to sacrifice themselves so the humans could live. The god
Ehecatl sacrificed all the other gods and a strong wind arose to help move the sun. Once they fixed
the sun, they recreated the world for the fifth time. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In their arithmetic, a dot equals 1, a bar equals 5, and so on. The Codex Vergara was a document in
which the Aztecs recorded their measurements of the surface of a field. This document helped the
experts to analyze how they used symbols and "land rods" to measure the distance of an irregular
shape of land. If a measurement did not match a precise number of land rods then they would use
symbols like arrows, hearts, and bones to indicate how much less the distance was than one rod.
These symbols were like the unit of measure inches. Inches were not simply part of a foot but a unit
itself. Each symbol was used as an individual

Hispanic Mesoamerica around the fifteenth to sixteenth century. This paper will look over the sacred
religious temple of Templo Mayor in which represented socio–political power and conquest. In

However, information is still limited as Eduardo Moctezuma argues, "we are only able to observe
the uppermost part of the earliest temple because 3/4s of the temple is still below the ground" as
such we are only able to observe what is now left of the Templo Mayor. Moreover, it is calculated
that the building was around 15 meters tall. In the article, "The Templo Mayor, The Great Temple of
the Aztecs," by Moctezuma, his research informs us that in Huitzilopochtli's shrine entrance there
was a sacrificial stone known as a "in situ." In which sacrificial knives were discovered beneath the
shrine along with green beads. For this particular shrine there seems to have been a statue of perhaps
the god because a bench is located at the far end of the Huitzilopochtli's shrine. Bone findings were
also viewed around the Huitzilopochtli's shrine revealing that sacrificial offerings formed part of the
Aztecs way of life. Being that said, Tlaloc's shrine remained in stable condition when it was
discovered. In which the front of the entrance for this shrine remained a statue which was known as
"chacmool." This chacmool related or connected with Tlaloc conveys as a figure with a container on
its stomach. Also, pillars are found near the entrance of Tlaloc's shrine which preserved some of its
coloring and design. This leads to pose that the Aztecs indeed had a very structured and significant

The Major Roles Of Religion In The Aztecs
Religion was a significant factor of Aztec culture and the main features of it were the gods and
goddesses, human sacrifice and the temples. The Aztecs worshipped many gods and goddesses
which represented different aspects of life or powerful forces of nature. Sacrifice was seen as the
continual debt that humans owed to the gods which was why sacrifice was a huge part of their
religion. Temples were where ceremonies and sacrifices were held and were heavily required to
perform religious acts. These key features of Aztec religion prove the major role that religion had in
their lives and gives us an understanding of their beliefs and lifestyle.
The Aztec gods are a key part of religion as they influenced the Aztecs' ceremonies and traditions.
As stated in the article, Aztec Civilisation, "gods were honoured with festivals, banquets, music,
dancing, decoration of statues...", which proves the dedication and importance of their gods in
religion. These gods were seen as inferior spirits that humans had to appreciate and look up to in
order for their world to run smoothly. The Aztecs adopted many gods from other civilisations and
each had a good and bad side to them. Each god and goddess would represent some part of daily
life, like the god, Huitzilopochtli, represented war and the sun and was the main protector. The
Aztecs believed that if they did something wrong, there would be consequences. Different gods
would have different abilities like Xipe Totec, the god of springtime,

What Are The Similarities Between Aztec And Inca Religions
What are some similarities between the Aztec and Inca religions? What are some differences? That
is a very broad topic where you could have many different responses. Honestly, the number of
similarities outweighs the number of differences between their respective religions. The main
similarities between the Incan and Aztec religions were that they were both polytheistic and they
both held sacrifices. The main difference is their sacrifices. The sacrifices are listed under both
comparisons and contrasts because the Aztec and Inca both have certain aspects that they are similar
in and they also differ in certain aspects of sacrifice. This is very significant if speaking on the topic
of their respective sacrifices.

The Aztecs sacrificed very frequently. This is because of the multitude of people that the Aztec
empire contained. The sacrifices were done somewhat over 20 times a year. The Inca sacrificed less
frequently. They saw sacrifice as an honor so it was not just done randomly. Also, the difference of
the frequency of the sacrifices correlates to the peaceful nature of the Inca compared to the
aggressive nature of the Aztec. The Inca did child sacrifice which was called Capacocha.
Meanwhile, the Aztec did not partake in child sacrifice rituals at all. The aggressive nature of the
Aztec or the peaceful nature of the Inca affected the the way that they processed the sacrifices. The
Inca took a "perfect" child and made him/her eat nothing but corn for 2 years prior to the sacrifice
occurring. Then, they forced the child to dink of a potion that would make him unaware of the
occurrences around him. In other words, they intoxicated the child. Subsequently, they took him up
to a mountain and killed him by either a blow to the head, strangulation or being buried alive. The
Aztecs took the human that would be sacrificed to a sacred temple and brutally ripped out their
heart. They would then, hold the heart up to the sun. After that they chop of their head and throw the
body down the temple's stairs. They disposed of the body by feeding it to the zoo or putting it on
display. Other ways of sacrifice

They continued to conduct skirmishes more than with the Tlaxcalans. The most shocking thing
about the sacrifices was that the people who are being sacrificed often went willingly. The person
never went screaming or was tortured into being killed. It was more of an agreement being carrioe
out. Imaging that they were going to have a glorious after–life. The Aztec flower war backfires as
more people were being sacrificed Mexico began to weaken. People outside the empire saw the
unusual blood from the outside.
Although the Tlacalans took part in the Aztec flower war, they hated and feared the empire. The
Aztecs could have easily taken Tlaxcala, but they used it as a farm for new human sacrifices.
Aztec religion focused on how the gods, humans and nature was interconnected. Their worship was
strong in Wuitzlopochti. The warrior was glamorous in that society, capturing prisoners was a key
for a warrior to rise in their ranks. Prisoners were a symbol for young men. Sometimes they would
wear helmets with the insignia of their order. Higher classes wore brighter feathers. The higher the
rank, the more elaborate the costume would be. Aztec warriors could also carry flowers as a
privilege normally reserved for the nobles. The warriors would get polished stone put in their lip.

The Ancient Aztecs ' Complex and Advanced Civilization. The Aztecs were a civilization that
emerged in Mesoamerica around the start of the thirteenth century and existed until 1521 CE. The
Aztecs had their own system of government, a very complex religion, and sports and games were
very important to the civilization. The Aztecs were a civilization that was complex as well as very
advanced in many different areas of their civilization such as their government, religion, and sports.

Aztec Religion: the Foundation of a Civilization
The religion of the Aztec, including their beliefs, customs and religions, acted as a tremendous
influence on their government, economy, and culture. Religion was the foundation for the infamous
culture of the Aztec Civilization. Through ceremonies of sacrifice, and the infusion of cosmology
into their religion, the Aztecs sculpted a culture unlike that of any other civilization, and left behind
a legacy to be studied and admired for generations to come. Religion ultimately shaped the unique
civilization of the Aztecs, through cultivating the general outlook and values of the Aztecs,

The first being political political: the subjugation of enemy city states in order expand the empire
and demonstrate power and superiority. The second objective was religious and socioeconomic: the
taking of captives to be sacrificed in religious ceremonies. According to Friar Diego Durán's
accounts of the Aztec civilization, Tlacaelel – a king of the Aztec Empire – arranged with leaders of
other Pre–Columbian city states to engage in ritual battles that would provide all parties with
enough sacrificial victims to appease the gods. Tlacaelel reigned over a period of great famine in the
empire in year 1450. The Aztec Religion believed that Gods required sacrifices to keep all running
smoothly. There were several gods that the Aztecs worshiped to for agricultural purposes, for
example: Tláloc, who sends rain and nourishes maize7, Centeotl, the god of maize in general,
Teteoinnan, the god of agriculture as well as sexual fertility, and Xipe Totec, god of rituals and
sacrifice8. The Aztecs believed that through worshipping certain gods, and generously providing
them with a steady supply of sacrifices and blood, the gods would in return keep things balanced.
When there was not enough victims, Tlacaelel resorted to these battles to collect more humans to be
sacrificed. War was a dominant aspect of the Aztec civilization, and they aspired to exponentially

What Is The Difference Between The Aztec Culture And Religion
1.Aztecs believed in sacrificing humans. They believed that if they did not provide enough blood to
the gods, the world would end. It is said that the gods when the world was being created that they
cut parts of themselves in order to nourish the earth. Aztecs believed that because of their loss of
blood they needed to be regiven it through sacrifices dedicated to them. They would sacrifice people
every 20 days, which was an Aztec month. Aztecs thought everything is tonacayotl(spiritual flesh
hood), which means everything in this world was created from the gods blood, limbs, and fingers.
They would perform different sacrifices for different gods. For instance, the god Tezcatlipoca would
have a young impersonator sacrificed to him in the month of Toxcatl, this impersonation was given
food, women, and was treated like a celebrity. On the day he was killed he would run in the town
playing the flute, then he would climb the temple and let the priests sacrifice him.

The Aztec Of Aztecs And Spanish Conquistadors
The events that occurred between the Aztecs and Spanish Conquistadors have many sides and
opportunities for debate. One of the most debated topics being; Who was more savage and who was
more Civil? Both the Aztecs and Spanish had powerful and thriving empires. These empires
displayed their dominance through their advanced technology and flourishing military. Though it
may seem that the Spanish were more advanced than the Aztecs, the Aztecs and Spanish were
actually quite close to being equal in technological advancements.
The Aztec empire has been said to be the "greatest engineers in the Americas" and rival the Roman
Empire in technology. The Aztec Empire had luxurious pyramids, temples and a gleaming capital
city called Tenochtitlan, that in its golden years, was said to house over 200,000–250,000 Aztecs.
Tenochtitlan was larger than Rome, London and Madrid put together. On top of it's large population,
the people and streets were very pristine. The Tenochtitlan citizens took daily baths to ensure they
were fully clean. Infact, Tenochtitlan had public baths and lavatories for the citizens.
Tenochtitlan was built on a lake island called Aztlan and over the lake, the Aztecs built fertile,
floating farms called "Chinampas".The people who inhabited the Aztlan Island were originally
called the Mexica people. The name Aztec is derived from the name of the Island. However

Similarities Between European And The Aztecs
"Although it has often been stated that the nations of Western Europe were far superior to the rest of
the world at the same time of their initial contacts, this, in fact, is not true."
According to Google, the word superior means, "a person or thing higher in rank or status," and it is
argued continuously that the Europeans were far superior to the non–European countries that they
encountered, however, I believe that they were both equal in their superiority in their own ways;
specifically Spain and The Aztecs. The Aztec empire stretched along the valley of Mexico with
Tenochtitlan as its capital, now known as Mexico City, was conquered in 1521 by the Spanish with
Hernando Cortes as their leader. On November 8, 1519, Cortes challenged the native forces and
entered Tenochtitlan taking the Aztec leader, Montezuma, as their hostage, this led to the uprising.
However, both the Spanish and the Aztecs were superior in regards to their communication, their
religion and their weapons.
Tenochtitlan at its height had more than 140,000 inhabitants and was one of the populated city in
Meso– America and so it is expected that they had an excellent way of communication. The Aztec
empire required a great deal of paperwork such as keeping track of taxes and tributes paid,

The Fall of the Aztecs
The Aztec civilization is widely regarded as the greatest civilization of the Americas. The
Aztecs' empire covered most of modern day central Mexico and was the most powerful civilization
in the region at the time. They had developed political, religious, and social systems that were very
intricate and important to the culture as a whole. The Aztecs, at the height of their greatness, ruled
5–6 million people and over 500 city–states. However every great civilization in history, including
the Aztecs, have a rise and have a fall. The Aztec Empire fell to the Spaniard's conquest because of
the Aztec's religion, disease, Spanish weaponry, and native alliances. Although the Aztecs have an
unknown origin, by legend they are believed to have originated from the northern part of modern
day Mexico. A nomadic tribe known as the Mexica began migrating to the Valley of Mexico. These
people are what society calls Aztecs today. In A.D. 1325 the Mexica founded the great city of
Tenochtitlan (modern day Mexico City) on the island of Lake Texcoco. Tenochtitlan allied with the
cities of Texcoco and Tacuba to form an alliance against the Tepanec people who were the dominant
people of the region. This alliance was known as the Triple Alliance which was the basis of the
Aztec Empire. The Triple Alliance dominated Central Mexico up until the time of the Spanish
Conquest in 1521.

Discuss the relationship between sacred spaces and the belief of the religion
The sacred spaces of Aztec have strong relationship between the beliefs of the religion. Aztec
referred to the temples as Teocalli, called by the Mexican people of the Empire known as God
houses. The priest of the Aztec religion visited these temples to pray and worship. Also making
offerings to their gods to strengthen and nourish them.
In Aztec religion the whole area of the city is dedicated to religious activities. Some sacred spaces
would be made to specific gods and some were built for certain celebrations. The buildings
associated with the Aztec religion are the pyramids. These were four sided and stable structures that
could withstand earthquakes that were highly common in the area. These great pyramids would have

The Aztecs as we know were very harsh as in they were very brutal. For example, something like
stealing would be looked upon as a high offense. This would usually lead to something along the
lines of cutting off of the hand(s) or death. Even stealing of minor things could lead to the death
penalty. Crime basically was lesser because of how harsh the punishments were. You can tell the
punishments were harsh because the lesser punishments was the shaving of the head and
demolishment of the persons house. Ritual is the element of a religion that can take many forms in
order to re–enact a myth. There is a ritual practiced by the Aztecs that was super popular which was

The primary three civilizations were the Maya, Inca, and the Aztecs. Each nation was very similar

they were agricultural nations and had strong political and social structures was also a factor in their
success. Their religions was the legitimacy of their nations. From their religion derived political and
social structures, rulings incumbent upon higher classes and lower classes, taxes and tributes to the
high classes and gods. With their religions setting all of this in place, it helped keep order amongst
people and maintain vast lands throughout the nations. The beginning of these great civilizations
began with the Maya. This original civilization originated in southern Mexico around 1000–250
BCE. It was agriculture that helped boosted this nation into existence but unfortunately, they had a
very mountainous terrain to farm. They developed many ways from them was building swamps and
crushing limestone into toxic waters to build places to farm. To keep this type of agriculture going,
much cooperation was needed between people. Their societies were small due to the lack of land, so
this kept families close together. As the progression of their agrarian society grew,

Religion's Role In Aztec Society Through Agriculture

  • 1. Power Of Religion In Aztec Society What would happen if more than 2,000 people were brutally killed by one nation every day? The world would be outraged and aghast. What if the killing continued for 150 years? This is what happened in Aztec society about 497 years ago.The Aztecs lived in the valley of Mexico from 1350 to 1519. They first migrated to the shores of Lake Texcoco around 1100 CE. Their religious beliefs led them to practicing brutal human sacrifice, which explains why they were distrusted and disliked by many groups living in that area. Historians should emphasize human sacrifice when talking about Aztecs because it was brutal and on such a large scale. It also showed the power of religion in Aztec society. • 2. Comparison of the Aztecs and Sumerians Most everyone knows about the great civilizations of the Sumerians and the Aztecs. If anyone were to visit the land that the Sumerians inhabited, they might not be able to imagine how these people were able to survive and flourish. The land there is dry and hot, with extreme temperatures. Hardly any vegetation survives in the area. However, the Sumerians did find a way in which they could live in the area and live bountifully (Landau 10–12). The Aztec Empire, on the other hand, appeared in Central America at a time when it seemed impossible to begin a civilization on an island in the middle of a lake. The island was not big enough for a thriving population. Nevertheless, the Aztecs overcame these challenges, flourished and became a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Aztecs did not use letters to write; instead they used small pictures called glyphs (Allen). These systems of writing were so complex that only scribes could write. Because of its complexity and the time it took to learn, there were most likely only a small handful of scribes. Scribes were important in both the Sumerian and Aztec cultures because the scribes were the only ones who could write. This may have been because the job was very time consuming. Since writing was such a complicated system few people mastered this ability. The shortage of scribes could be accounted for the tradition of scribes being taught at private school, which means they must come from wealthy backgrounds. Scribes were very important in these civilizations' cities. Undoubtedly, because of their abilities the citizens were proud of their scribes (Crystal). For example, the scribes in the Aztec civilization read records to elites, so they could learn more of their history. In every civilization people believe in some type of religion. The same is true for the Sumerians and Aztecs. Both of these civilizations believed that there were gods and goddesses who they needed to please to ensure them a good and prosperous life. The Sumerians, like many agricultural people, had a polytheistic religion, which means that the Sumerians believed in and worshipped many gods (Hooker). The gods were incredibly powerful and the Sumerians worshipped the gods because they ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

However in the 16th century invaders from Spain led by conquistador, Hernan Cortez, put an end to the Aztecs after taking Tenochtitlan ("Beyond Human Sacrifice", 2002; "Montezuma, II", 1998). • 6. Why Is Aztec Agriculture Important Well the aztecs had to major ways that they believed in. one was human sacrifice and the other was aztec agriculture. the one that i chose was aztec agriculture. I chose that because it seemed easir to me and because we use stuf that they had come up with.like the canals and the ittagaint and the islands. The aztecs were around 1350 to 1519. during that time they were in mexico city. And where they were there was 300,000 thousand people.they were not in a very big area. the religion i would stress about the most is aztec agriculture.and the three reasons that i'm gonna talk about is large scale, clever construction, and cultrera everyday life. The reason why large scale is so important is because of what they did to survive. Since hey only had 129 miles of land. they had lots of people "300,000" and little land. they were smart enough to figure out how to get more. They had these islands and they would grow there crops on those islands and since they didn't want them to go away the put palm trees to stop them from going away. they had canals going through them and they are the one that started irrigation. if they hadn't done what they did with the irrigation we wouldn't have the water we need for our crops today. they wouldn't have survived if they didn't do what ... The capital city, Tenochtitlan, was built in 1325 and was one of the biggest cities in the world. The Aztec culture grew to 15 million people until 1521 when the empire fell due to Spanish invasions. (Griffin, S. 2013). The main point of discussion is that mythology and religion shaped the lives of the ancient Aztec civilisation. Religion was an important part of the Aztec existence many events and rituals took place because for their religious beliefs and mythology. (Crystal, E. 2016). Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One of the first early Mexica states linked to Teotihuacan would be the Toltec and their capitol of Tula. Tula seems to have started as a city of immigrants with people coming to it from many different places. One very notable people being the Teotihuacano after their city declined (Evans 410–411). They worshipped gods like Tlaloc, the successor of the storm god of Teotihuacan as well as Quetzalcoatl and Tezcatlipoca (Evans 411). Militarism is something that the Toltec might have picked up from the ancient civilization as well. Many Teotihuacan military style designs can be found in Tula architecture (Evans 417–418). In their society there were many highly skilled artisans (Evans 418). The land although high in altitude had the proper water sources to allow for intense irrigation and cultivation (Evans 410). The Toltec while not an expansive state can easily be linked through their religion and militarism both to Teotihuacan and later to the Aztecs. Aztec culture and society is the final step in the journey from the culture of Teotihuacan. It shares some similarities with its neighbors and predecessors, while also having its differences. It has a strong connection to Tula as the Mexica tribes stayed there for a time when Tula was at its height (Evans 429). Summary Of King Montezuma And The Last Stand Of The Aztecs Conquistador: Hernán Cortés, King Montezuma, and the Last Stand of the Aztecs written by Buddy Levy tells the story of a conquistador named Hernán Cortés who sailed to an unknown land and in less than two years, conquered the entire Aztec empire. Levy addresses many issues but is mainly concerned about the differences between the two cultures, which causes an issue between both the Spaniards and the Aztecs, and argues that people cannot take over an empire without clashing cultures. Religion and culture have been an issue then and now and although people are free to practice their own religion and culture, it is inappropriate for the Spaniards to impose their religion and culture to the Aztecs as this could also cause tension between ethnic groups. ... These were the new idols the people of Cozumel were to worship." Cortés broke the people of Cozumel's idols in order to spread Christianity and power. Although Cortés has the right to practice his culture and is spreading Christianity, he does not respect other people's beliefs therefore causing fear and doubt toward the Spaniards. Another example of cultural difference is the Indians' sacrificial offerings to their gods. Cortés and his soldiers were horrified at the fact that the Aztecs and Indians would sacrifice children and sometimes eat the humans. (Yellow,16) Legends have been told about the history of Mexico City, but not until recently was the great city of Tenochtitlan uncovered while construction workers were digging in Mexico City. There are very few physical remains of the ancient city today, but the history of this great civilization is still with us. This civilization was created by the Aztecs, who built their empire in 1325 AD. (Yellow,15). The capital of the Aztecs, Tenochtitlan, flourished rapidly as their life revolved around their religion, which greatly helped them expand their empire. Religion played a key role in the ancient Aztec society and consisted of numerous gods, ceremonies, and temples. According to Aztec legend, the Aztec civilization came about when the god Huitzilopochtli told his people to find a new home for their civilization. The people traveled and eventually ended up at Lake Texcoco. This is where they see an eagle perched on a cactus eating a snake, which was the gods sign that this will be their permanent home. So, the Aztecs settled on an island inside of Lake Texcoco, called Tenochtitlan. The Aztecs, who were natives in Mexico, welcomed Cortez with opened arms because they believed he was one of their gods, Quetzalcoatl. Throughout this two–year campaign where the Spanish and Aztecs were fighting for ownership of the land, and after thousands of people killed, the Spanish conquered the land, seizing the existence of the Aztec Empire. This cultural encounter changed the lives of both the Aztec and Spaniards greatly by the change in language, religion, and the benefits this take–over had on the Spanish Empire. The second objective was religious and socioeconomic: the taking of captives to be sacrificed in religious ceremonies. According to Friar Diego Durán's accounts of the Aztec civilization, Tlacaelel – a king of the Aztec Empire – arranged with leaders of other Pre–Columbian city states to engage in ritual battles that would provide all parties with enough sacrificial victims to appease the gods. Tlacaelel reigned over a period of great famine in the empire in year 1450. The Aztec Religion believed that Gods required sacrifices to keep all running smoothly. • 35. Similarities Between European And The Aztecs "Although it has often been stated that the nations of Western Europe were far superior to the rest of the world at the same time of their initial contacts, this, in fact, is not true." According to Google, the word superior means, "a person or thing higher in rank or status," and it is argued continuously that the Europeans were far superior to the non–European countries that they encountered, however, I believe that they were both equal in their superiority in their own ways; specifically Spain and The Aztecs. The Aztec empire stretched along the valley of Mexico with Tenochtitlan as its capital, now known as Mexico City, was conquered in 1521 by the Spanish with Hernando Cortes as their leader. On November 8, 1519, Cortes challenged the native forces and entered Tenochtitlan taking the Aztec leader, Montezuma, as their hostage, this led to the uprising. However, both the Spanish and the Aztecs were superior in regards to their communication, their religion and their weapons. Tenochtitlan at its height had more than 140,000 inhabitants and was one of the populated city in Meso– America and so it is expected that they had an excellent way of communication. The Aztec empire required a great deal of paperwork such as keeping track of taxes and tributes paid, recording the events of the year whether it was great or small, genealogies of the ruling class, divinations and prophecies, temple business, lawsuits as well as court proceedings and property lists with maps; ...
