INTRODUCTIONS
Linda Shaw - WDC Facilities Officer and I am delighted to come along today with
Sharon Lockhart – Cook from Bonhill PS school where our Primary work experience programme started
Stephanie & Nicola P7 have just completed their work experience Aug this year and will share their experiences with you all.
Background
In West Dunbartonshire Council area we have 12,400 Pupils within
6 High schools
34 Primary schools & 1 SAN school.
As one Scotland’s most deprived local authority areas, we recognised that poverty & poor diet are linked to levels of poor health and I’m sure that this is also reflected in many of your own local authority areas.
The work experience initiative offers pupils within a primary school environment the opportunity to learn in a real and meaningful workplace setting , and at the same time promotes Nutritional standards and the school lunch service to our customers .
OPPORTUNITY in 2010
Just completed Scottish Government FSM pilot – meal uptake had decreased
New school with fabulous new kitchen facilities
Looking for a way to encourage pupils to have a school lunch
Recruited New catering team internally – who were enthusiastic – forward thinking
Delivering valued services together :
maximise partnership working and school meal uptake
positive programme of work experience & health promotion
Kitchen integrated part of the school ( another classroom )
Nutritional standards :
Raising awareness of nutritional standards to young people
Improving health & well being of young people at present and for the future
School meal profile /uptake :
In recent years school meals service has had some negative press and this programme has raised the profile at a local and national level.
Recognition from parents, teachers, pupils , Scottish Government , Education Scotland ,HMIE , Education professionals.
10% increase in meal uptake since commencement of project started and has remained steady over the last 2 years .
Link Curriculum for Excellence to Health & Well being THIS PROJECT OFFERS
Skills for life - healthy choices in nutrition and lifestyle
Skills for work – team work , work ethics and self motivation
Skills for learning - transfer of class based skills , numeracy ,literacy, hygiene , nutrition communication
Skills for the future – transfer of skills to new situations in a real work place environment – confidence, responsibility.
As with any new project we came up against many challenges
Main issue Health & Safety
HT & Sharon Consulted – H & S colleagues , put proposals to parents, pupils ,catering team
Worked closely with H & S – together we identified and managed the risks associated with having young people in a busy hazardous environment & developed a suitable risk assessment.
Identifying any set up costs required – Uniforms were the only area where we required funding – this was funded jointly by Muller Wiseman & prize money which school won , as recognition at WDC Educations Annual Amazing things award scheme. Bought chefs jackets / trousers / hats – embroidered supplier & school logo .
GOOD NEWS IS …................................................................
This initiative can be replicated within any local authority, for any service, the cost implications are minimal and all you need is time commitment and enthusiasm from all partners involved .
