Re: Memo Report
My report has a 4% similarity rating. The items that are flagged are the parts where I repeat what the
assignment is. This is supposed to happen since we all got the same assignment. The only other area
that got flagged in my report is where I said I am a student at the University of Houston. This is
coincidental since every student in my class should go to the same college.
My report is not flagged anywhere else.
A PROPOSAL FOR RESEARCH ON THE FEASIBILITY OF THE TECHNOLOGY IN THE
FILM PASSENGERS
By: Julie Le
1. INTRODUCTION
1.1 Purpose
I propose to provide a report that discusses the feasibility of the hibernation pod used in the science
fiction film Passengers. I will also create a poster and presentation based on the topic I have chosen.
This report will fulfill the requirements for ENGI 2304, Technical Communications.
1.2 Background
ENGI 2304 requires a report that analyzes the feasibility of the science used in any science fiction
film. I will focus on the potentiality of hibernation pods in real life, mainly on how it could be made.
1.3 Scope ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Then, I will provide a brief introduction about instances of human hibernation in real life. I will then
provide a plausible method to building one. Based off the information I find in my research, I will
compare the pod in the film and a potential one in real life. I will also explain why the subject of a
hibernation pod should matter to the audience. I will use statistics portrayed by tables and figures
and use images to explain my findings.
With my poster, I will mainly use images and tables. Like my report and final presentation, I will
discuss and compare the hibernation pod in the film and reality. I will use minimal writing and
provide key words in the form of bullet points to convey my findings.

Essay on How Terminator Two Satisfies the Science Fiction...
How Terminator Two Satisfies the Science Fiction Genre The film, Â'TerminatorÂ' is part of a
trilogy; Terminator 2 is the sequel to the first terminator film– Terminator 1. The auteur, James
Cameron, produced the first terminator movie in 1984; and because the film was a big success with
a range of viewers– the majority of different genre lovers– , James Cameron had decided to create a
sequel, which was produced in 1993. The big screen had cost a huge budget in Hollywood,
WarnerBrotherÂ's (a franchise, film production business). This may have been due to the special
effects, and casting of the characters. Special effects in the film ... Show more content on

Science fiction is a very big genre. In Terminator 2, the film has many sub–genres the movie fall
back on to, because the film is difficult to categorize within the same generic conventions. The sub–
genres that are usually emerged are, dystopia, invasion and visitation, space opera, time travel,
fantastic worlds, science out of control, comedy, war, action, and romance. The sub–genre dystopia
is a society vision of the world in the future, where it is very bleak and dismal. The world is out of
control and has no law. The protagonists are seen as unwilling anti–heroes. Invasion and visitations
is a sub–genre that is trying to give answers to satisfy you curiosity on the Â'what ifÂ...?Â' factor.
The product output of this sub– genre often depends upon the current political climate within the
country of production. If the location, America, were feeling susceptible politically there would be a
sudden arrival of an action Sci–Fi film. Soap opera is a genre where there is some soap– opera
action happening in the science fiction atmosphere. This means that the films deal with histrionic
and real life issues. Time travel is very popular concept to use in science fiction films. Time travel is
based on the idea of sending people or machinery back and forth in time. This is a very popular as it
impresses the audience and keeps them on the edge

Summary Of The MovieThe Martian 2014
"The Martian" 2015 is a very entertaining science fiction film which is accredited for its scientific
accuracy. However, some artistic liberties were taken to make the movie easier to make and progress
the plot. This paper will cover both accurate and inaccurate areas of space science featured in the
film. The portrayal of Mark Watney's separation, habitation of mars, and recovery will all be
analyzed. The way Mark gets separated from the crew is an area of inaccuracy. There are storms on
mars, but the strength of them would be much less significant. Mars has no atmosphere so the winds
would not be able to knock over the ship [1]. Though the storms may be dangerous to humans due to
flying debris, such a large ship would not be so affected. The debris would not be as dangerous as
shown. Even the strongest winds, up to 60 mph, on mars would have trouble keeping the astronauts
from moving around, and would have a tough time picking up anything even remotely tied down
[1]. The chance of debris knocking someone back and impaling them like what happened to Mark
Watney would be very unlikely. The way habitation of Mars is portrayed is a mixed bag of accuracy.
The gravity on Mars is 30% that of the earth, yet Watney moves around like any earthling [2]. This
makes the movie easier to film, and if they had attempted to portray the gravity accurately, there
would have been inaccuracies anyway.
Radiation seems to be ignored almost completely besides for the device he uses to heat his rover.
Being on mars for extended periods of time would increase the chances of cancer. NASA only
allows 200 rem per year [4], which Watney would almost certainly exceed being on a planet with no
atmosphere to protect from the Sun's radiation. This was probably left out as it would likely not have
immediate effects on Watney but it's still a big concern for real astronauts. Communication was
portrayed fairly accurately. The movie says the communication speed is 30 minutes there and back.
Since mars is 54.6 million miles away, data traveling at the speed of light would take 3 minutes to
get there [2]. Once data processing, inaccuracy, and other factors are accounted for, 30 minutes is
realistic.

Comparison and Contrast
In the 1956 science fiction film by Fred Wilcox, Forbidden Planet closely resembles many other
pieces of literature. The most obvious resemblance to Forbidden Planet is Shakespeare's The
Tempest. As expected, the characters and plot of Forbidden Planet closely mirror those
characteristics of The Tempest, with the exception that where The Tempest engages magic,
Forbidden Planet utilizes technology. What is more important, however, is that how the technology
works is irrelevant for the purpose of the movie, which is to entertain and to teach us a lesson about
man's control over the elements and over his own technological creations. Forbidden Planet strongly
resembles Shakespeare's The Tempest through the characterization similar in both the play and the
film.
In Shakespeare's The Tempest, Prospero and Miranda became stranded on a remote island that has
no person except for Caliban on it. Prosperon using the magic he has created, he gradually gains
control of the island and turns Caliban into his slave. A group of sailors is shipwrecked on the island,
one of whom falls in love with Miranda, the lovely daughter of Prospero. Throughout the story,
Caliban and other servants plot to overthrow Prospero, but are caught and taken back to the custody
of Prospero.
In the science fiction film Dr. Morbius and his daughter Altaira are in control of a remote planet
when a U.S. spaceship lands on the planet to gather information. Commander Adams of the

Blade Runner: The Most Influential Science Fiction Film
Blade Runner is known to be the most influential science fiction film coming from the neo–noir
genre (Leggett). People claim it is an instant science fiction classic (Savage). The sequel Blade
Runner 2049 follows up with further interesting visualization but on a greater scale than its
predecessor created thirty–five years ago. Science fiction films have undergone major changes the
past few decades due to the visual advancements in the field. A big part of the sequel's success is
due to its 'tonal and visual similarities' as well as what John Nelson, the film's Oscar–winning visual
effects supervisor, explained as, "Using all of the visual effects to make something feel very
organic" (Marshall). Movies today are filmed through cell phones and make it to the big screen and
others are all done digitally through computers. Although the resources are easily within our reach,
the labor and quality is present through the few consistent things that are accomplished rather than a
many inconsistent. John Nelsons agrees by saying, "Less is more, rather than throwing a million
things at the viewer, why not just a hundred really good things" (qtd. In Marshall). CGI is becoming
a mature art form, but even now, there are occurrences where you cannot beat doing traditional
matte painting and model effects 'in camera'(Savage). Spencer ... Show more content on

the film a different feel, as it appears beautiful and realer (Marshall). One of The Intelligent

The Power Of Language In Denis Villeneuve's 'Arrival'
Denis Villeneuve's 2016 film Arrival is a hallmark of science fiction, relying on standard genre
tropes, but, on a deeper level, serving to expand the boundaries of what a science fiction piece can
be and what topics it can broach. Though simple in premise, the film actually poses a complex
narrative that carries deep and thought provoking undertones, which supplies it with an unusual
weight when compared to most science fiction films. Simplistically, linguistic expert Louise Banks,
with the aid of physicist Ian Donnelly, is tasked with interpreting the language of extraterrestrial
beings following the arrival of 12 alien spacecrafts spread across the globe. More complexly the
film touches upon such ideas as global unification, cultural diversity and understanding, gender
roles, influences of mass media, and governmental cooperation. However, the film's primary
concern is with the role of communication in global connectivity, and how language barriers can
inhibit this connectivity. Indeed, the film's key theme is the importance communication through
shared language to establish cross cultural understanding. In the following paragraphs, certain
cinematic elements including genre, narrative, editing, and sound design will be discussed in
correlation with various scenes to highlight how the use of these elements promotes the power of
language and communication. Firstly, it is important to understand how the "rules" of the science
fiction genre worked to benefit director

The Matrix : An American Australian Science Fiction Film
The Matrix was made in 1999, is an American–Australian science fiction movie that was written and
directed by The Wachowskis. The movie was made to portray a not so good future where humans
actually see it as a simulated reality. The Matrix was created by a sentimental machine that would
reduce the human population while the body heats heat and electricity are used as an energy source.
Computer programmer Neo, learns the truth and is drawn into a rebellion against the machines,
involves other humans who have been freed from the so called dream world. The matrix is known
for promoting a visual effect of what is known as "bullet time". The Matrix opens with a shot of a
computer screen, where a phone call is being traced and the viewers can overhear the voices on the
phone lines talking about whether or not they have found 'the one'.

Noir Film Analysis
The train comes into La Ciotat Station. The passengers waiting for the train and the train coming
into the train station seem to be full of life. In 1895, Lumiere brothers photographed the arrival of a
vibrant train with the best cinematography instrument of the time, the Cinematography, which is
considered the first film. 'Film' has developed dramatically since then. The public was enthusiastic
about the film, and this moving picture became the most popular and technology–intensive art. The
appearance of a film changes through various factors. Among them, the technical and economic
factors have a big influence on it. For example, economic changes in society affect film genre
formation, as the Great Depression of the 1950s influenced the formation of the film Noir. Noir was
later formed as a genre with more stability due to the economic factors within the film industry.
Also, as the technology developed, the graphic technique shaped the film Noir into a broader genre.
Thus, the formation of the film genre is shaped and changed according to various external factors.
Firstly, the term 'noir' means 'dark' or 'black' in French which explains gloomy and merciless
storytelling of film noir. Its formation has back to the 1940s. The American Society was intoxicated
with the huge surplus caused by exports of military supplies, which led to overheated consumption
and the mass production of many goods. However, at the end of the Second World War, the society
was unable to cope with

How McCabe and Mrs Miller and Blade Runner Subvert Their Genres and Defy Audience
Expectations
Two genres which have always been Hollywood staples are science–fiction and the western. The
genres can be seen in films made as early as Le Voyage Dans la lune (Georges Melies 1902) and The
Great Train Robbery (Edwin S. Porter 1903). On the surface the two genres are very different,
however if one looks closely at them they are similar in many ways. Both genres usually feature
uncharted frontiers, strong silent protagonists, frightening savages (played by either space aliens or
Native Americans) and damsels in distress. The formula for these two genres was established many
decades ago and in recent years it takes a film that defies and ... Show more content on

One important change from traditional western is the cold, the film is set in winter in a cold climate
and Beatty goes around bundled up like a bear in a thick fur coat. The viewer can almost feel the
wind whipping through the poorly built houses and the residents shivering. Altman features the
snow and the weather prominently in his film, this is in stark contrast to a traditional western which
takes place in a warm state and in which the climate is rarely an issue. Another difference is the way
in which Altman peoples his film with realistic characters whose flaws he makes clear to the
audience. This is not an idealized west peopled by beautiful looking movie stars, even Beatty,
sporting a thick beard, and Christie are willing to look less attractive than usual for their parts. The
people who live in Altman's West have had difficult lives. They have poor hygiene and poor social
skills. These realistic characters include the workers McCabe uses to build his whorehouse as well
as the whores he first brings to town, while Altman treats these people sympathetically and their
appearance and actions are realistic it is clear that they are not prime examples of human beauty,
intelligence and cleanliness. This use of realistic characters is not always the case in idealized
westerns such as High Noon (Fred Zinneman 1952) starring the movie star–lawman Gary Cooper

The Matrix, By The Wachowski Brothers
Art has always been, and always will be, our most instinctual way of producing visual adaptions of
our inner fantasies. Imaginings that are based on what is real, but appear to belong to another place
entirely. One of the most engaging of art forms in which we do this, is film. Its ability to recreate the
impossibilities of our imagination, in a way that is realistic and believable, is one that is hard to
replace within the genres of science fiction and fantasy. A classic example of such a film is 'The
Matrix' a science fiction masterpiece directed by The Wachowski Brothers. Released in 1999, the
film has an extreme amount of depth not only in its storyline, but in its innovative use of visual
effects and camerawork. Therefore in this essay I have decided to critically examine the underlying
thematic content of 'The Matrix', and the way in which the use of visual effects and cinematography
contributed to the execution of its intricate dystopian narrative, and the themes present within it.
Advances in technology have allowed filmmakers to produce more and more works based within the
setting of fantasy and reality, coexisting with each other. And often, as it is in 'The Matrix', reflecting
back on each other. One of the themes within The Matrix that relates to this element, is this idea of
the blurring lines between what is 'man' and what is 'machine'. The film clearly presents humans and
machines on opposing sides of an ongoing battle for life, yet throughout the film we are

Max's right thumb twitching and shaking until his whole body is overcome by a massive migraine.
Throughout the film, Max is plagued by these headaches, each beginning with a camera close–up of
his twitching thumb. The dramatic effect is intensified by a mess of techno, chaotic–sounding music

Analysis Of Arrival
Many science–fiction movies often have a common theme either the aliens or turn into a generic
overwhelming threat and humanity has to band together to fight against them, like in the films such
as Independence Day and Battle: Los Angeles, or the aliens are use as a more colorful backdrop to
make the universe seem more diverse, such as in the films Star Trek and Star Wars, or they are left
entirely out and focus on humanity's endeavors into space and their failings. Arrival, however, is a
science–fiction film that uses the premise of an alien invasion to disguise an even deeper meaning.
Arrival uses this premise to tackle the issue of xenophobia. Xenophobia is an intense or irrational
fear or dislike of people from a foreign country or culture. The film, Arrival, is a testament against
xenophobia and shows that if humanity were to overcome their fear of the unknown and work
together, they may achieve a great number of things. In Denis Villeneuve's science fiction film
Arrival, the director explores a very different view of reality, akin the guise of an alien invasion.
Arrival is based on the 1998 novella "Story of Your Life," by Ted Chiang, the story contemplates the
difficult task and the consequences of communicating with an alien species during first contact. The
film opens up when twelve extraterrestrial spaceships appear at twelve different places around the
globe. Colonel Weber, a U.S. Army officer, recruits Louise Banks, a linguist, and Ian Donnelly, a

Avatar Film Analysis
Most of the science fiction works contain a crucial message that the writer wishes to convey to the
viewers. There are two categories of film message, one is positive and the other is negative. A
positive message is one that is expected to have favourable outcome to the audience, and
continuously aiming to promote better societal changes. In contrast, a negative message is one that
could deliver threats or unpleasant information to the audience, which could have significant impact
on the normal order of the society. This essay will argue that if the message contains positive
elements, then it is not a bad sign to embed science fiction works with a message. First, this essay
will suggest that the well–integrated message within a particular ... Show more content on

In addition, the film focus mainly on a human protagonist name Jake, and narrate his transformation
from a human to an alien, which is done through a human–developed technology that injects human
DNA into the alien bodies. After Jake's transformation, the scene opens another implicit message:
aliens are to be forcibly removed from their planet to create space for human activity (Veracini,
2011, p. 357). For the climax part of the film, the director establishes a passage that describes Jack
becoming a native of Pandora, and the director again aims to introduce the audience with a message
saying that human power against corporate force as to conserve our natural environment. This
message seemingly gives audience a wonderful twist of the plot and is quite thought provoking for
the audience. Hence, when a film includes well–integrated messages, it adds another layer of quality
to the entire plot whereby all the elements of the plot becomes more meaningful, and the general
audience could be attuned with the rhythm of the film because there is a logical flow from one scene
to the next.
Moreover, the positive messages embedded in science fiction works can have powerful influence on
the audience and the society, both locally and globally. In particular, most of the messages
embedded are prompted by the past events of world history or by the contemporary social

Invasion Of The Body Snatchers
Savannah Dye
Short Essay #3
October 18, 2016
Invasion of the Marriage Police
Invasion of the Body Snatchers is widely dubbed an anti–Communist film by those who have seen
it. The plot of the movie is that unfamiliar, extraterrestrial "body snatchers" are taking over the
bodies of people in a small town in California while they sleep, and replacing them with clones that
lack emotion. For the most part, a general consensus has been reached that the mass hysteria about
the "pod people" in the film is reflective of the red–scare consumed society of the 1950's. However,
the article that I read that was written in response to this film suggests that it is instead a cynical
representation of post–WWII, traditional American domesticity.
The article that I read that was pertaining to Don Siegel's 1956 adaptation of Invasion of the Body
Snatchers is called "Lovelier the Second Time Around: Divorce, Desire, and Gothic Domesticity in
Invasion of the Body Snatchers", written by Jennifer L. Jenkins. Jenkins suggests that rather than
being a science fiction film that has an anti–Communism message, Invasion of the Body Snatchers
is actually a Gothic narrative that presents domesticity and marriage in general as a crippling
institution. The 20–page article offers up many examples throughout the film that reinforce the idea
that the transformed "pod people" represent the traditional, domesticated individuals while those
who remain in their authentic state represent non–conforming

The scene has a close–up shot of the actor opening his eyes, and the soundtrack makes this simple

soundtrack derives the emotions from the music building powerful scenes.
The ending of the movie usually has music, but mostly it is used to close the scene with soft sounds.
Blade Runner's ending has a dramatic twist, so a victorious lively music is not appropriate. The
ending music is slow and very emotional as Deckard lies on the ground and dies. It is a twist that
leaves the viewers in anticipation for some possibility of Deckard being saved having accomplished
his mission. This creates a unique end to the film and a great achievement by the score.
Music is used in film for different purposes. It entertains the audience and refreshes the movie by
creating suspense, emotions, and a sense of rush. In listening to the soundtrack, the viewers are
captivated by what is happening in the film and relate to it. Music also helps to set the mood of the

conditions for the audience to enjoy the movie. Music is a fundamental requirement in a film as

The Science Fiction Film Genre Essay
Science Fiction Films
The science fiction film genre has been around almost as long as movies have, but like the cinema it
is still a fairly young art form. This genre came into existence shortly after the invention of the
movie camera in 1888 and has endured for over one–hundred years. Science fiction is adaptive; it
changes with the times and this trend can be seen in its incorporation of other genres, cultural
history and technology. This essay will attempt to define the genre, chronicle the history and
evolution, and explore its relation to technology. This is in general and in the cinema.
When discussing the science fiction film genre a problem occurs. The distinction between science
fiction and other genres is not always clear cut. Many movies span between the science fiction genre
and other genres. Movies such as The Ring (2002) or the Alien series (1979, 1986, 1992, and 1997)
illustrate how the distinction between science fiction and horror films can be obscure. Some
comedies, such as Mars Attacks (1996) and Back to the Future (1985), are very much science
fiction. In fact there is an example of a science fiction film fitting into almost any genre. Starship
Troopers (1997) parallels a war film and Outland (1981) resembles a western in many respects.
The characteristics that define the science fiction genre can be difficult to pin down. A genre such as
the western has easily identifiable characteristics such as cowboys, guns, the Wild West, and bad
guys with

The good thing about films is that we not only have the opportunity to choose from a wide selection
of different genres, but also compare them and understand their purpose in the world. The Horror
genre has used the basic principles throughout time, and as a result, films of this type have not
proven to be as timeless as another genre: Science Fiction/Fantasy. At first, these two genres might
at times seem similar as they have at several occasions been blended together, but their basic,
common theme serves different meanings about humans. I shall compare and contrast these two
genres and focus on both classic films and modern films. From the Horror genre perspective I shall
discuss Psycho (1960) and The Mist (2007), while in the Science Fiction/Fantasy genre I will
examine 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), Pan's Labyrinth (2006), and Serenity (2005). Although the
Science Fiction/Fantasy genre and the Horror Genre share some similarities, the differences lie in
their focus on human progress.
The genres relationship lies in the danger of human lives in an unfamiliar milieu. There is a threat to
the lives of the characters whose fear and danger is a common element. The source of this can be
from both humans and imaginary monsters. The horror films Psycho and The Mist both have
humans as the real threat to the main characters. Schizophrenic Norman Bates in Psycho is a
heinous, disturbed killer who dresses up in woman's clothes when he is about to kill someone. The
danger is first

Analysis Of The Film Snowpiercer
The plot in the film Snowpiercer, directed by Bong Joon Ho, follows lead actor Chris Evans, who
stated in reference to the film, "I absolutely think it should be seen on a big screen. But I read
something where someone from RADiUS that said, 'A screen is a screen is a screen (Daniels).'" This
quote is significant because it relates to the current expansion of entertainment delivery systems in
the world. Nonetheless, Snowpiercer is a film that was directed for the cinema screen. When it was
released in 2013, the film made approximately eighty–seven billion dollars internationally, and it
was considered one of the first films of the year in the competition for an Oscar (Pomerantz).
Furthermore, this film was produced by SnowPiercer, Moho Film, Opus Pictures, Stillking Films,
and CJ Entertainment ("Snowpiercer"). In terms of the story, the setting of Snowpiercer is
2031where the entire earth is frozen except for a train and its survivors. The train is divided into a
class system where the poor are at the back of the train, and the wealthy are at the front. With this to
say, the poor are treated appallingly, forced to live in cramped and dirty spaces, and are given scarce
supplies of food. Thus, the story follows Curtis, led by actor Chris Evans, as he devises a revolt
from the back of the train to fight through the enemies guarding the front (Snowpiercer).
Snowpiercer is a diverse film adaptation that uses vivid imagery and a compelling narrative to
exemplify the spectacle,

The Characteristics Of Aliens In Avatar And District 9
In the films Avatar and District 9, which were both released in 2009, there are stereotypical elements
of the science fiction genre. By discussing humanity towards aliens, a reliance on an advance in
technology, the use of corporate giants as a controlling forces as well as moral and emotional
manipulation, this essay will prove to a large extent that District 9 and Avatar have evolved past
typical science fiction films. However, it will also prove how District 9 has continued to evolve and
therefore is more evolved as a science fiction film than Avatar.
In Avatar and District 9, the initial interaction between the humans and the aliens revealed the true
characteristics of the aliens. For example, in District 9, this scene involved very poor ... Show more

their superiority over the aliens. This therefore provides an obvious difference between the two

Science fiction films have mesmerized the audience the world over with their surreal adventures and
special effects. These kinds of movies attract young people the most. But films like Star Wars and

Analysis Of The Film Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes
The movie Rise of the Planet of the Apes is a fascinating science fiction film that not only exposes
the fault of the human mind, but also demonstrates a completely original structure and a unique
point of view on an apocalyptic type film. The movie is based around a young scientist, Will
Rodman, whom is in pursuit to find a cure for Alzheimer's in hopes to cure his very sick father
(Charles Rodman). He works in a science laboratory where their main test subjects are apes. When
the preliminary tests go sour and one ape in the test center lashes out at another scientist causing
chaos throughout the entire lab, all but one of the apes were euthanized. The ape that did not get
killed was rescued by Will, and named Caesar. Will notices that Caesar is unusually smart, even for
an ape, that is when he discovers that the effects of the medicine that was given to Caesar's mother
(ALZ–112) had been passed on to Caesar himself. Will, who had been sitting by without hope,
watching his father get more, and more ill, decides to go back to the lab and retrieve some of the
ALZ–112. He hopes that he can begin to treat his father with the medicine and see results, like the
ones he had witnessed in Caesar. To his wishes, he saw just that, his father had regained almost full
health. It was almost as if his Alzheimer's had just disappeared. Unfortunately, the results were
short–lived. Determined, Will returns to the lab to help create a new version of the drug called ALZ–

The Matrix And Charlie Angels
Everyone has their own movie preference. There are people who adore the hardcore action and there
are some who prefer the slow paced drama. Many individuals may not like a movie because of the
genre it is in. A genre is a categorization of certain types of movies based upon their style, form, or
content. The genre is a vital component of a film since it characterizes which course the plot line
will go and allows to prepare yourself for that film. Movie genre is the term used to differentiate
between various number of films. There are around five fundamental groups that are big and
prevalent i.e. Action, Horror, Comedy, Science fiction. In this essay ,I will be comparing two films,
The Matrix and Charlie Angels. I will discuss the use of cinematography, the genres of the films,
and how effective they are. I will also look at the characters, action, plot ,sound and atmosphere
created, and how these are aimed at each film 's target audience.
Charlie 's Angels is an action comedy film, which borrows ideas from other well–known movies
such as 'Mission Impossible ', 'James Bond ' etc. It is not very original or challenging, has a weak
and predictable plot, and is merely an update on the 1970 's television series of the same name. The
film is based on a trio of beautiful women who are hired to retrieve a man and his technology. They
achieve this by working together, using their intelligence, a series of cunning plans, combined with
an impressive display of girl power.

RQ2: Have these characters influenced a change with women in the society?

Valentina ParAn Analysis of the Film Limitless
Limitless is a science fiction film, which was released on March 18, 2011. The movie, which was
directed by Neil Burger and produced by Leslie Dickson, Scott Troopf and Ryan Kavanaugh; and
the screenplay created by Leslie Dickson is based on the out of the ordinary novel by Alan Glynns,
The Dark Fields. Other than the stories collision of an anti–drug morality tale and an anti–hubris
morality tale, which is the aforementioned Faustian bargain, limitless is an inspiring example of a
film which spends so much time on connecting the necessary dots of various over worn genres that
it doesn't ultimately fit into any of them. It is a guide to our recognizable cliché on the danger and
power of intelligence, exposed of their darker, more stimulating insinuation that elicits an aspect of
advantage into the audiences.
The film is one of a kind based on the uniqueness and the interesting plot and manages to grab the
viewer's attention from the beginning of the film where the audience is given a taste of what the rest
of the movie will feel like from beginning to end. The film revolves around a New York writer
Eddie Morra (Bradley Cooper) who has been shown to have quite a load of problems within his
career and private life as well.

Blade Runner: Techniques Of A Science Fiction Film
The movie Blade Runner is one of the best films that supports the techniques of a science fiction

Dehumanization In Blade Runner
Assigntment 3 – Cities and cultures
Cities future
Zombies and androids have both been used as productive ways of imagining city futures. Develop
an argument in which you use one of these two tropes as a conceptual tool for critiquing the current
direction of urban identity, either by revealing a problem or by articulating an alternative.
Dystopian science fiction films of the past have frequently presented a critical dystopia, by
projecting future cities that perpetuates corporate capitalism's prominent features. Examples of these
features are urban decay, commodification, overcrowding, highly skewed disparities of wealth and
poverty, and authoritarian policing. An example of a Dystopian science fiction film that project

It opposes the values of love, empathy and community with the innovative forms of technology and
social life under advanced capitalism. The binary opposition between man and technology is
represented by three characters in the plot: Deckard, apparently a human. Roy, an android who fears
death and longs to be human and Rachel, who thinks she is human and who enters a relationship
with a human. These replicants represent capitalism's oppressive characteristics and also to a certain
extent the rebellion against exploitation. Deckard's realization of how the Tyrell Corporation
exploits him, and the rebellion of the replicants against their oppressors, is the ultimate critique of
capitalism. Since both sides – killer and killed – reject their status as servants of the corporation and
refuse further exploitation. (Kellner, et all) The corporation in the Blade Runner that is used to
illustrate capitalism's destructive characteristics is The Tyrell Coporation. The Tyrell Corporation
invents replicants to have a controllable labor force that will perform difficult and dangerous tasks.
Similarly applicable to today, where capitalism turns individuals into machines that have only the
function of productivity. Ironically, the replicants form a human rebellion; while the actual human
characters in the film seem to submit to corporate domination and live a life like the corporations
sees them to. It seems as if the humans have become so dehumanized that the replicants form a
rebellion against their oppressor instead of human beings. Capitalism has dehumanized the
population to such an extent, that technology is actually more

Science fiction and horror genres involved the human in some slanting direction with the science

Atomic Bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and Science Fiction

American imagination perspective of there view points on science fiction films. Furthermore, Ryfle

Many Japanese viewers went and watched the movie, leaving the theatre in tears due to the scenes
relating so vividly to the events that occurred. One such occurrence included the lucky dragon
incident, which involved a tuna trawler that trekked dangerously close to an H–bomb test site,
resulting in radiation poisoning to the crew members. Along with this imagery, a still illustration of
Hiroshima and Nagasaki in ashes after being hit by Godzilla symbolizes the attack of atomic bombs
by the Americans. This visual resembles how both cities looked after they had been attacked by the
atomic bombs. After the successful release of the film, Japanese critics accused the directors of
cashing in on national hysteria, and thus were not pleased. To support Ryfle's argument, Susan
Napier partially agrees with what Ryfle has to say in her article, "Panic Sites," by stating that "the
notion of disaster is of course not the only theme in Japanese science fiction" (Napier 330)–meaning
that the aesthetic concentration of disaster is not always praising the special effects but moreover
looking at the effects of disaster. Furthermore, she states, "The film offered its immediate post war
Japanese audience an experience that was both cathartic and compensatory, allowing them to rewrite
or at least to re–imagine their wartime experience" (Napier 330). They both conclude that certain

Science-Fiction Films During The 1950's
The science–fiction film genre serves as an excellent medium for examining shifting power
structures, social paranoia and Cold War politics during the 1950s. A number of films released
during this period, including: Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956), The Day the Earth Stood Still
(1951), Them (1954) and Attack of the 50ft Woman (1958), are particularly symptomatic of the
social and political atmosphere of the time. These films navigate not only narrative based issues
such as the threat of aliens and science experiments gone wrong; but also wider issues of the time,
such as the Cold War, changes in the US film industry, urbanisation, politics, the growing power of
women and most significantly, social concern about nuclear energy.
Before analysing individual science–fiction films from the 1950s, it is important to gain a clear
understanding of the social, cultural and political background against which these films were set.
Paranoia is a term frequently used to describe an acute, anxiety dominated medical condition
(Paranoia, 2009), however in the context of 1950's America, this term can be used more accurately
to describe the general, delusionary mood of the nation. The first important event that influenced a
paranoiac filmmaking atmosphere was the Cold War. As opposed to the 'hot war' (WWII) that
involved active military hostilities, the Cold War was based on heightened tension and suspicions
between Western Bloc (USA) powers and Eastern Bloc (Soviet Union) powers (The

In these films, along with their numerous brethren, the alien invaders were "often a metaphor for
Communism" (Dirks). The Day the Earth Stood Still was an early warning to the world, and a

along with his robot backup, Gort, lands in Washington D.C. intending to deliver a message to the
world's leaders – Desist with atomic power or be destroyed. However, before he is able to deliver

Looking first at Star Trek, the main female character throughout the movie is Nyota Uhura. She is
only seen in few scenes in the exposition of the movie and onboard the U.S.S Enterprise, but she is
not given any characterization, backstory, or even a clear duty as a crew member. While every
character is given a few seconds to either say or show their importance to the spaceship, Uhura is
given the smallest description of her role, if there really is a clear one given. Her main scenes in the
movie and role are being "Spock's girlfriend, comforting him in the elevator, kissing him goodbye as
he leaves for a mission, and speechlessly gazing at him with love or concern while the men define
the action the crew will take," showing how far away this female character matters to the plot

The Horror Genre Of Horror Essay
Introduction The horror genre is one of the oldest genres used in storytelling. It was used in old
folklore stories and was commonly used during the ancient Greek plays. Horror genre became one
of the first genres to be adopted into filmmaking in the 1920's. Though the word "horror" to describe
in the film genre would not be used until after Universal Pictures released Dracula and Frankenstein
both in 1931. J. A. Cuddon (1984) defined horror in The Penguin Book of Horror Stories as "a piece
of fiction in prose of variable length... which shocks or even frightens the reader, or perhaps induces
a feeling of repulsion or loathing" (p. 11). Like most genres the favoritism towards one depends on
what is happening in society. Today horror genre continues its popularity in films and television
because the economy is not doing well. There are many different subgenres to horror but they all
have themes that are repeated. This paper will focus on the science fiction horror subgenre. Science
fiction is best defined by writer Robert A. Heinlein (1959) stated, "realistic speculation about
possible future events, based solidly on adequate knowledge of the real world, past and present, and
on a thorough understanding of the nature and significance of the scientific method" (n.p.). Science
fiction horror films are fictional science–based depictions of phenomena with a horror twist added to

Hibernation Pods

  • 1. Hibernation Pods Date: March 3, 2017 To: Dr. Chad Wilson Technical Communication From: Julie Le Re: Memo Report My report has a 4% similarity rating. The items that are flagged are the parts where I repeat what the assignment is. This is supposed to happen since we all got the same assignment. The only other area that got flagged in my report is where I said I am a student at the University of Houston. This is coincidental since every student in my class should go to the same college. My report is not flagged anywhere else. A PROPOSAL FOR RESEARCH ON THE FEASIBILITY OF THE TECHNOLOGY IN THE FILM PASSENGERS By: Julie Le 1. INTRODUCTION 1.1 Purpose I propose to provide a report that discusses the feasibility of the hibernation pod used in the science fiction film Passengers. I will also create a poster and presentation based on the topic I have chosen. This report will fulfill the requirements for ENGI 2304, Technical Communications. 1.2 Background ENGI 2304 requires a report that analyzes the feasibility of the science used in any science fiction film. I will focus on the potentiality of hibernation pods in real life, mainly on how it could be made. 1.3 Scope ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Then, I will provide a brief introduction about instances of human hibernation in real life. I will then provide a plausible method to building one. Based off the information I find in my research, I will compare the pod in the film and a potential one in real life. I will also explain why the subject of a hibernation pod should matter to the audience. I will use statistics portrayed by tables and figures and use images to explain my findings. With my poster, I will mainly use images and tables. Like my report and final presentation, I will discuss and compare the hibernation pod in the film and reality. I will use minimal writing and

  • 4. Essay on How Terminator Two Satisfies the Science Fiction... How Terminator Two Satisfies the Science Fiction Genre The film, Â'TerminatorÂ' is part of a trilogy; Terminator 2 is the sequel to the first terminator film– Terminator 1. The auteur, James Cameron, produced the first terminator movie in 1984; and because the film was a big success with a range of viewers– the majority of different genre lovers– , James Cameron had decided to create a sequel, which was produced in 1993. The big screen had cost a huge budget in Hollywood, WarnerBrotherÂ's (a franchise, film production business). This may have been due to the special effects, and casting of the characters. Special effects in the film ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Science fiction is a very big genre. In Terminator 2, the film has many sub–genres the movie fall back on to, because the film is difficult to categorize within the same generic conventions. The sub– genres that are usually emerged are, dystopia, invasion and visitation, space opera, time travel, fantastic worlds, science out of control, comedy, war, action, and romance. The sub–genre dystopia is a society vision of the world in the future, where it is very bleak and dismal. The world is out of control and has no law. The protagonists are seen as unwilling anti–heroes. Invasion and visitations is a sub–genre that is trying to give answers to satisfy you curiosity on the Â'what ifÂ...?Â' factor. The product output of this sub– genre often depends upon the current political climate within the country of production. If the location, America, were feeling susceptible politically there would be a sudden arrival of an action Sci–Fi film. Soap opera is a genre where there is some soap– opera action happening in the science fiction atmosphere. This means that the films deal with histrionic and real life issues. Time travel is very popular concept to use in science fiction films. Time travel is based on the idea of sending people or machinery back and forth in time. This is a very popular as it impresses the audience and keeps them on the edge ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. Summary Of The MovieThe Martian 2014 "The Martian" 2015 is a very entertaining science fiction film which is accredited for its scientific accuracy. However, some artistic liberties were taken to make the movie easier to make and progress the plot. This paper will cover both accurate and inaccurate areas of space science featured in the film. The portrayal of Mark Watney's separation, habitation of mars, and recovery will all be analyzed. The way Mark gets separated from the crew is an area of inaccuracy. There are storms on mars, but the strength of them would be much less significant. Mars has no atmosphere so the winds would not be able to knock over the ship [1]. Though the storms may be dangerous to humans due to flying debris, such a large ship would not be so affected. The debris would not be as dangerous as shown. Even the strongest winds, up to 60 mph, on mars would have trouble keeping the astronauts from moving around, and would have a tough time picking up anything even remotely tied down [1]. The chance of debris knocking someone back and impaling them like what happened to Mark Watney would be very unlikely. The way habitation of Mars is portrayed is a mixed bag of accuracy. The gravity on Mars is 30% that of the earth, yet Watney moves around like any earthling [2]. This makes the movie easier to film, and if they had attempted to portray the gravity accurately, there would have been inaccuracies anyway. Radiation seems to be ignored almost completely besides for the device he uses to heat his rover. Being on mars for extended periods of time would increase the chances of cancer. NASA only allows 200 rem per year [4], which Watney would almost certainly exceed being on a planet with no atmosphere to protect from the Sun's radiation. This was probably left out as it would likely not have immediate effects on Watney but it's still a big concern for real astronauts. Communication was portrayed fairly accurately. The movie says the communication speed is 30 minutes there and back. Since mars is 54.6 million miles away, data traveling at the speed of light would take 3 minutes to get there [2]. Once data processing, inaccuracy, and other factors are accounted for, 30 minutes is realistic. (54.6 x 10^6 km)(1 hour/1.079 x 10^9 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. Fred Wilcox's Science Fiction Film, Forbidden Plane has a... Comparison and Contrast In the 1956 science fiction film by Fred Wilcox, Forbidden Planet closely resembles many other pieces of literature. The most obvious resemblance to Forbidden Planet is Shakespeare's The Tempest. As expected, the characters and plot of Forbidden Planet closely mirror those characteristics of The Tempest, with the exception that where The Tempest engages magic, Forbidden Planet utilizes technology. What is more important, however, is that how the technology works is irrelevant for the purpose of the movie, which is to entertain and to teach us a lesson about man's control over the elements and over his own technological creations. Forbidden Planet strongly resembles Shakespeare's The Tempest through the characterization similar in both the play and the film. In Shakespeare's The Tempest, Prospero and Miranda became stranded on a remote island that has no person except for Caliban on it. Prosperon using the magic he has created, he gradually gains control of the island and turns Caliban into his slave. A group of sailors is shipwrecked on the island, one of whom falls in love with Miranda, the lovely daughter of Prospero. Throughout the story, Caliban and other servants plot to overthrow Prospero, but are caught and taken back to the custody of Prospero. In the science fiction film Dr. Morbius and his daughter Altaira are in control of a remote planet when a U.S. spaceship lands on the planet to gather information. Commander Adams of the ... • 10. Blade Runner: The Most Influential Science Fiction Film Blade Runner is known to be the most influential science fiction film coming from the neo–noir genre (Leggett). People claim it is an instant science fiction classic (Savage). The sequel Blade Runner 2049 follows up with further interesting visualization but on a greater scale than its predecessor created thirty–five years ago. Science fiction films have undergone major changes the past few decades due to the visual advancements in the field. A big part of the sequel's success is due to its 'tonal and visual similarities' as well as what John Nelson, the film's Oscar–winning visual effects supervisor, explained as, "Using all of the visual effects to make something feel very organic" (Marshall). Movies today are filmed through cell phones and make it to the big screen and others are all done digitally through computers. Although the resources are easily within our reach, the labor and quality is present through the few consistent things that are accomplished rather than a many inconsistent. John Nelsons agrees by saying, "Less is more, rather than throwing a million things at the viewer, why not just a hundred really good things" (qtd. In Marshall). CGI is becoming a mature art form, but even now, there are occurrences where you cannot beat doing traditional matte painting and model effects 'in camera'(Savage). Spencer ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Nelson goes into how he prefers matte paintings rather than Computer Generated art due to giving the film a different feel, as it appears beautiful and realer (Marshall). • 12. The Power Of Language In Denis Villeneuve's 'Arrival' Denis Villeneuve's 2016 film Arrival is a hallmark of science fiction, relying on standard genre tropes, but, on a deeper level, serving to expand the boundaries of what a science fiction piece can be and what topics it can broach. Though simple in premise, the film actually poses a complex narrative that carries deep and thought provoking undertones, which supplies it with an unusual weight when compared to most science fiction films. Simplistically, linguistic expert Louise Banks, with the aid of physicist Ian Donnelly, is tasked with interpreting the language of extraterrestrial beings following the arrival of 12 alien spacecrafts spread across the globe. More complexly the film touches upon such ideas as global unification, cultural diversity and understanding, gender roles, influences of mass media, and governmental cooperation. However, the film's primary concern is with the role of communication in global connectivity, and how language barriers can inhibit this connectivity. Indeed, the film's key theme is the importance communication through shared language to establish cross cultural understanding. In the following paragraphs, certain cinematic elements including genre, narrative, editing, and sound design will be discussed in correlation with various scenes to highlight how the use of these elements promotes the power of language and communication. Firstly, it is important to understand how the "rules" of the science fiction genre worked to benefit director ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 14. The Matrix : An American Australian Science Fiction Film The Matrix was made in 1999, is an American–Australian science fiction movie that was written and directed by The Wachowskis. The movie was made to portray a not so good future where humans actually see it as a simulated reality. The Matrix was created by a sentimental machine that would reduce the human population while the body heats heat and electricity are used as an energy source. Computer programmer Neo, learns the truth and is drawn into a rebellion against the machines, involves other humans who have been freed from the so called dream world. The matrix is known for promoting a visual effect of what is known as "bullet time". The Matrix opens with a shot of a computer screen, where a phone call is being traced and the viewers can overhear the voices on the phone lines talking about whether or not they have found 'the one'. Trinity is known as an infamous hacker who is surrounded by police in an abandoned hotel. She does the unknown and overpowers them with her superhuman abilities; gravity defying kung–fu moves, escapes, however a group of evil and superhuman agent's dresses in black lead the police officers through chase through a nameless town, sprint over a bunch of rooftops, and leaps over city blocks. Trinity then dives through a window across the street, the chase the ends inside a telephone booth on a quiet street. She is then seen answering a public telephone and disappears. • 16. Noir Film Analysis The train comes into La Ciotat Station. The passengers waiting for the train and the train coming into the train station seem to be full of life. In 1895, Lumiere brothers photographed the arrival of a vibrant train with the best cinematography instrument of the time, the Cinematography, which is considered the first film. 'Film' has developed dramatically since then. The public was enthusiastic about the film, and this moving picture became the most popular and technology–intensive art. The appearance of a film changes through various factors. Among them, the technical and economic factors have a big influence on it. For example, economic changes in society affect film genre formation, as the Great Depression of the 1950s influenced the formation of the film Noir. Noir was later formed as a genre with more stability due to the economic factors within the film industry. Also, as the technology developed, the graphic technique shaped the film Noir into a broader genre. Thus, the formation of the film genre is shaped and changed according to various external factors. Firstly, the term 'noir' means 'dark' or 'black' in French which explains gloomy and merciless storytelling of film noir. Its formation has back to the 1940s. The American Society was intoxicated with the huge surplus caused by exports of military supplies, which led to overheated consumption and the mass production of many goods. However, at the end of the Second World War, the society was unable to cope with ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

How McCabe and Mrs Miller and Blade Runner Subvert Their Genres and Defy Audience Expectations Two genres which have always been Hollywood staples are science–fiction and the western. The genres can be seen in films made as early as Le Voyage Dans la lune (Georges Melies 1902) and The Great Train Robbery (Edwin S. Porter 1903). On the surface the two genres are very different, however if one looks closely at them they are similar in many ways. Both genres usually feature uncharted frontiers, strong silent protagonists, frightening savages (played by either space aliens or Native Americans) and damsels in distress. The formula for these two genres was established many decades ago and in recent years it takes a film that defies and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One important change from traditional western is the cold, the film is set in winter in a cold climate and Beatty goes around bundled up like a bear in a thick fur coat. The viewer can almost feel the wind whipping through the poorly built houses and the residents shivering. Altman features the snow and the weather prominently in his film, this is in stark contrast to a traditional western which takes place in a warm state and in which the climate is rarely an issue. Another difference is the way in which Altman peoples his film with realistic characters whose flaws he makes clear to the audience. This is not an idealized west peopled by beautiful looking movie stars, even Beatty, sporting a thick beard, and Christie are willing to look less attractive than usual for their parts. The people who live in Altman's West have had difficult lives. They have poor hygiene and poor social skills. These realistic characters include the workers McCabe uses to build his whorehouse as well as the whores he first brings to town, while Altman treats these people sympathetically and their appearance and actions are realistic it is clear that they are not prime examples of human beauty, intelligence and cleanliness. This use of realistic characters is not always the case in idealized westerns such as High Noon (Fred Zinneman 1952) starring the movie star–lawman Gary Cooper (Will ... • 22. The Matrix, By The Wachowski Brothers Art has always been, and always will be, our most instinctual way of producing visual adaptions of our inner fantasies. Imaginings that are based on what is real, but appear to belong to another place entirely. One of the most engaging of art forms in which we do this, is film. Its ability to recreate the impossibilities of our imagination, in a way that is realistic and believable, is one that is hard to replace within the genres of science fiction and fantasy. A classic example of such a film is 'The Matrix' a science fiction masterpiece directed by The Wachowski Brothers. Released in 1999, the film has an extreme amount of depth not only in its storyline, but in its innovative use of visual effects and camerawork. Therefore in this essay I have decided to critically examine the underlying thematic content of 'The Matrix', and the way in which the use of visual effects and cinematography contributed to the execution of its intricate dystopian narrative, and the themes present within it. Advances in technology have allowed filmmakers to produce more and more works based within the setting of fantasy and reality, coexisting with each other. And often, as it is in 'The Matrix', reflecting back on each other. One of the themes within The Matrix that relates to this element, is this idea of the blurring lines between what is 'man' and what is 'machine'. The film clearly presents humans and machines on opposing sides of an ongoing battle for life, yet throughout the film we are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Analysis Of Arrival Many science–fiction movies often have a common theme either the aliens or turn into a generic overwhelming threat and humanity has to band together to fight against them, like in the films such as Independence Day and Battle: Los Angeles, or the aliens are use as a more colorful backdrop to make the universe seem more diverse, such as in the films Star Trek and Star Wars, or they are left entirely out and focus on humanity's endeavors into space and their failings. Arrival, however, is a science–fiction film that uses the premise of an alien invasion to disguise an even deeper meaning. Arrival uses this premise to tackle the issue of xenophobia. Xenophobia is an intense or irrational fear or dislike of people from a foreign country or culture. The film, Arrival, is a testament against xenophobia and shows that if humanity were to overcome their fear of the unknown and work together, they may achieve a great number of things. In Denis Villeneuve's science fiction film Arrival, the director explores a very different view of reality, akin the guise of an alien invasion. Arrival is based on the 1998 novella "Story of Your Life," by Ted Chiang, the story contemplates the difficult task and the consequences of communicating with an alien species during first contact. The film opens up when twelve extraterrestrial spaceships appear at twelve different places around the globe. There are two categories of film message, one is positive and the other is negative. A positive message is one that is expected to have favourable outcome to the audience, and continuously aiming to promote better societal changes. In contrast, a negative message is one that could deliver threats or unpleasant information to the audience, which could have significant impact on the normal order of the society. This essay will argue that if the message contains positive elements, then it is not a bad sign to embed science fiction works with a message. First, this essay will suggest that the well–integrated message within a particular ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For the climax part of the film, the director establishes a passage that describes Jack becoming a native of Pandora, and the director again aims to introduce the audience with a message saying that human power against corporate force as to conserve our natural environment. This message seemingly gives audience a wonderful twist of the plot and is quite thought provoking for the audience. Hence, when a film includes well–integrated messages, it adds another layer of quality to the entire plot whereby all the elements of the plot becomes more meaningful, and the general audience could be attuned with the rhythm of the film because there is a logical flow from one scene to the next. • 32. Invasion Of The Body Snatchers Savannah Dye Short Essay #3 October 18, 2016 Invasion of the Marriage Police Invasion of the Body Snatchers is widely dubbed an anti–Communist film by those who have seen it. The plot of the movie is that unfamiliar, extraterrestrial "body snatchers" are taking over the bodies of people in a small town in California while they sleep, and replacing them with clones that lack emotion. For the most part, a general consensus has been reached that the mass hysteria about the "pod people" in the film is reflective of the red–scare consumed society of the 1950's. However, the article that I read that was written in response to this film suggests that it is instead a cynical representation of post–WWII, traditional American domesticity. The article that I read that was pertaining to Don Siegel's 1956 adaptation of Invasion of the Body Snatchers is called "Lovelier the Second Time Around: Divorce, Desire, and Gothic Domesticity in Invasion of the Body Snatchers", written by Jennifer L. Jenkins. Jenkins suggests that rather than being a science fiction film that has an anti–Communism message, Invasion of the Body Snatchers is actually a Gothic narrative that presents domesticity and marriage in general as a crippling institution. The 20–page article offers up many examples throughout the film that reinforce the idea that the transformed "pod people" represent the traditional, domesticated individuals while those who remain in their authentic state represent non–conforming ... • 38. The Science Fiction Film Genre Essay Science Fiction Films The science fiction film genre has been around almost as long as movies have, but like the cinema it is still a fairly young art form. This genre came into existence shortly after the invention of the movie camera in 1888 and has endured for over one–hundred years. Science fiction is adaptive; it changes with the times and this trend can be seen in its incorporation of other genres, cultural history and technology. This essay will attempt to define the genre, chronicle the history and evolution, and explore its relation to technology. This is in general and in the cinema. When discussing the science fiction film genre a problem occurs. The distinction between science fiction and other genres is not always clear cut. Many movies span between the science fiction genre and other genres. Movies such as The Ring (2002) or the Alien series (1979, 1986, 1992, and 1997) illustrate how the distinction between science fiction and horror films can be obscure. Some comedies, such as Mars Attacks (1996) and Back to the Future (1985), are very much science fiction. In fact there is an example of a science fiction film fitting into almost any genre. Starship Troopers (1997) parallels a war film and Outland (1981) resembles a western in many respects. The characteristics that define the science fiction genre can be difficult to pin down. • 40. A Compare and Contrast of Horror and Science... The good thing about films is that we not only have the opportunity to choose from a wide selection of different genres, but also compare them and understand their purpose in the world. The Horror genre has used the basic principles throughout time, and as a result, films of this type have not proven to be as timeless as another genre: Science Fiction/Fantasy. At first, these two genres might at times seem similar as they have at several occasions been blended together, but their basic, common theme serves different meanings about humans. I shall compare and contrast these two genres and focus on both classic films and modern films. From the Horror genre perspective I shall discuss Psycho (1960) and The Mist (2007), while in the Science Fiction/Fantasy genre I will examine 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), Pan's Labyrinth (2006), and Serenity (2005). Although the Science Fiction/Fantasy genre and the Horror Genre share some similarities, the differences lie in their focus on human progress. The genres relationship lies in the danger of human lives in an unfamiliar milieu. There is a threat to the lives of the characters whose fear and danger is a common element. The source of this can be from both humans and imaginary monsters. The horror films Psycho and The Mist both have humans as the real threat to the main characters. Other than the stories collision of an anti–drug morality tale and an anti–hubris morality tale, which is the aforementioned Faustian bargain, limitless is an inspiring example of a film which spends so much time on connecting the necessary dots of various over worn genres that it doesn't ultimately fit into any of them. Atomic Bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and Science Fiction Argumentative Synthesis Between Ryfle and Sontag Many differences can be seen between Steve Ryfle's article "Godzilla's Footprint" and Susan Sontag's well known 1965 article "Imagination of Disaster" as Ryfle talks about the Japanese's imagination perspective while Sontag talks about the American imagination perspective of there view points on science fiction films. Furthermore, Ryfle takes an intensive approach toward Godzilla has he provides evidence that advances his argument with the help of Susan Napier's article "Panic Sites" where she demonstrated key points toward Japanese science fiction films and relate to Ryfle's point of view. Many Japanese viewers went and watched the movie, leaving the theatre in tears due to the scenes relating so vividly to the events that occurred. One such occurrence included the lucky dragon incident, which involved a tuna trawler that trekked dangerously close to an H–bomb test site, resulting in radiation poisoning to the crew members. Along with this imagery, a still illustration of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in ashes after being hit by Godzilla symbolizes the attack of atomic bombs by the Americans. This visual resembles how both cities looked after they had been attacked by the atomic bombs. After the successful release of the film, Japanese critics accused the directors of cashing in on national hysteria, and thus were not pleased. To support Ryfle's argument, Susan Napier partially agrees with what Ryfle has to say in her article, "Panic Sites," by stating that "the notion of disaster is of course not the only theme in Japanese science fiction" (Napier 330)–meaning that the aesthetic concentration of disaster is not always praising the special effects but moreover looking at the effects of disaster. Furthermore, she states, "The film offered its immediate post war Japanese audience an experience that was both cathartic and compensatory, allowing them to rewrite or at least to re–imagine their wartime experience" (Napier 330). • 64. Science-Fiction Films During The 1950's The science–fiction film genre serves as an excellent medium for examining shifting power structures, social paranoia and Cold War politics during the 1950s. A number of films released during this period, including: Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956), The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951), Them (1954) and Attack of the 50ft Woman (1958), are particularly symptomatic of the social and political atmosphere of the time. These films navigate not only narrative based issues such as the threat of aliens and science experiments gone wrong; but also wider issues of the time, such as the Cold War, changes in the US film industry, urbanisation, politics, the growing power of women and most significantly, social concern about nuclear energy. Before analysing individual science–fiction films from the 1950s, it is important to gain a clear understanding of the social, cultural and political background against which these films were set. Paranoia is a term frequently used to describe an acute, anxiety dominated medical condition (Paranoia, 2009), however in the context of 1950's America, this term can be used more accurately to describe the general, delusionary mood of the nation. The first important event that influenced a paranoiac filmmaking atmosphere was the Cold War. As opposed to the 'hot war' (WWII) that involved active military hostilities, the Cold War was based on heightened tension and suspicions between Western Bloc (USA) powers and Eastern Bloc (Soviet Union) powers (The ... Suddenly, they lunge and tear down into soft, warm, vulnerable flesh with startling speed. Not far behind, oozing inside–out hellhounds growl around razor fangs, stalking with murderous intent. In these films, along with their numerous brethren, the alien invaders were "often a metaphor for Communism" (Dirks). The Day the Earth Stood Still was an early warning to the world, and a commentary on paranoid society when its main character tried to do just that. The alien Klaatu, along with his robot backup, Gort, lands in Washington D.C. intending to deliver a message to the world's leaders – Desist with atomic power or be destroyed. However, before he is able to deliver that message, he is promptly shot – a commentary on society's post–war paranoia and immediate distrust of the unknown. America's leaders suspect the humanoid Klaatu of being a Communist spy, Russia won't meet to hear the message unless it takes place on its own soil, and Britain will have none of that. Ultimately, the alien's attempts to deliver the dire message are futile, with the world's leaders unable to overcome their pettiness and suspicion to really hear. Unlike films that followed, The Day the Earth Stood Still was an exception to the rule in that the alien was not an invader, but a benign message–bearer. Aliens invade in War of the Worlds It seemed that words were not enough, and so films like The War of the Worlds and Invasion of the Body Snatchers made good on Klaatu's promise. • 74. Star Trek Future The Future Is Not Far Beyond Our Potential When thinking of science fiction stories and films, their concepts and ideals seem far out of our own world. The beauty of science fiction films is the ability of them to take the audience to a different world to excite the feelings of awe and wonder, making us leave the realism and probable behind. These alterations from ordinary life and reality may take away from authenticity, but science fiction can prove to resemble more of our society when analyzing the societies and advancements created in these films. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Looking first at Star Trek, the main female character throughout the movie is Nyota Uhura. She is only seen in few scenes in the exposition of the movie and onboard the U.S.S Enterprise, but she is not given any characterization, backstory, or even a clear duty as a crew member. While every character is given a few seconds to either say or show their importance to the spaceship, Uhura is given the smallest description of her role, if there really is a clear one given. Her main scenes in the movie and role are being "Spock's girlfriend, comforting him in the elevator, kissing him goodbye as he leaves for a mission, and speechlessly gazing at him with love or concern while the men define the action the crew will take," showing how far away this female character matters to the plot (Tudor and Meehan 132). Looking at another female character, Gaila is given the same treatment as Uhura in filling a non–progressive role in society. Gaila is seen in her main scene as a sexy female involved with Kirk with the coincidence run into Uhura once again. Gaila falls into the minimal role of a sexual distraction to the main character that ends up depicting women to an unimportant role in developing the story. These women and other female characters that appear in the movie mostly "occupy traditional narrative roles: mother, sexual partner, and girlfriend," giving them supportive roles and ultimately sticking to the conservative story where men are the heroes and women are there to support the men on their quest (Tudor and Meehan 132). Women depicted in this futuristic movie are not given the development and opportunity to break stereotypes of society and are left to fit in the shadows of prominent male leaders as seen in a majority of prior ... • 76. The Horror Genre Of Horror Essay Introduction The horror genre is one of the oldest genres used in storytelling. It was used in old folklore stories and was commonly used during the ancient Greek plays. Horror genre became one of the first genres to be adopted into filmmaking in the 1920's. Though the word "horror" to describe in the film genre would not be used until after Universal Pictures released Dracula and Frankenstein both in 1931. J. A. Cuddon (1984) defined horror in The Penguin Book of Horror Stories as "a piece of fiction in prose of variable length... which shocks or even frightens the reader, or perhaps induces a feeling of repulsion or loathing" (p. 11). Like most genres the favoritism towards one depends on what is happening in society. Today horror genre continues its popularity in films and television because the economy is not doing well. There are many different subgenres to horror but they all have themes that are repeated. This paper will focus on the science fiction horror subgenre. Science fiction is best defined by writer Robert A. Heinlein (1959) stated, "realistic speculation about possible future events, based solidly on adequate knowledge of the real world, past and present, and on a thorough understanding of the nature and significance of the scientific method" (n.p.).
