2. This is about the plastic problem facing Hawaii’s
beaches, and some solutions to help heal the ocean.
3. Hawaii’s beaches are being littered with plastic
which looks bad, but it is also horrendous for sealife
who ingest it and get trapped by it.
4. An organization trying to solve this problem is
The Ocean Cleanup by Boyan Slat. He started
this campaign in 2013, and have been sending
out test runs in 2017. He is going to launch his
machines in 2018.
5. His idea is to use the ocean to move a
floating machine across the water to gather
the plastic. The flotation device gets pushed
around in the currents with the garbage, but
at a slightly slower pace, catching the trash.
Then they ship it to the mainland, and
recycle.
6. My idea is people would come
to a beach or river and see a
beautiful sign above a
trash/recycle bin, explaining
why it is important to keep our
waters clear of plastic. Beside
the bin will be offered a
biodegradable bag to carry
around with them during their
day.
7. If they see plastic/trash, they pick it up, put it in their
biodegradable bag, and throw it away on their way
out.
8. These will be put in prime beach and river locations.
9. Most plastic/trash entering the ocean is easily
preventable. They are everyday objects that people
lose. If we were a little more careful, we could
prevent a lot of ocean damage.
10. Let’s keep our ocean clean and our ocean life safe!
