Cultural Influences On The Development Of My Personal...
There is no doubt that the culture I have experienced in my short 16 years has had an influence on
the development of my personal identity. I tend to think of myself as a very cultured person, which
is surprising if you take a look at where I come from. Most of the culture I have experienced, like
the fine arts and a wide variety of music, is derived from my own curiosity and my relationships
with my family and not stimulated by my community. Because of this factor, the person I am today
is almost the complete opposite of what my community is.
My hometown of Denmark, Wisconsin could very well be considered a cultural wasteland, void of
any real, tangible evidence of the finer things in life. This rural town can be characterized by three
things:

Streetcar Named Desire Themes
Tennessee Williams weaves A Streetcar Named Desire with various themes. Viewers and readers
experience a whirlwind of misogyny, vulnerability, and deceit. Tied with these themes are symbols,
which include the Varsouviana polka tune, the use of the song, "It's Only a Paper Moon," and lights
and the paper lantern. With these symbols, Williams creates a pathway into the minds of his
character Blanche Dubois. The Varsouviana polka tune was playing many years ago, when Blanche
saw her young husband, Allan Grey, for the last time. Earlier that day, she found him in bed with an
older male friend. Pretending that nothing happened, the three of them had drinks and went out
dancing together. While dancing to the polka, Blanche turned to Allan and told him that she was
"disgusted" in him. Allan then ran outside and shot himself in the head. The Varsouviana is heard at
random times during the play. It is used to show Blanche's guilt and remorse ... Show more content

The music only ends after she hears the sound of a gunshot in her head. By adding the Varsouviana,
Williams was able to set the mood of Blanche being unstable and imagining music that no one else
can hear. She can't escape the guilt because she feels as though she caused her husband's suicide.
She can't escape her husband's death, therefore she can't escape the music. Another musical piece
serves as a symbol in the play. In Scene Seven, Blanche sings "It's Only a Paper Moon," while
bathing. "Say, it's only a paper moon, Sailing over a cardboard sea–But it wouldn't be make–believe
if you believed in me!" (Williams 120). The lyrics tell the story of how love turns the world into a
"phony" fantasy. If both people in the song believe in their imagined little reality, then it is no longer
"make–believe." Williams uses the song to summarize Blanche's life. She believes that her lying is
the only way she can have a better life, thus making it

C-Fern Lab Report
This was a multi–week experiment that involved sowing the fern spores in nutrient agar. This
allowed for observation and analysis of the life cycle of the C–Fern. With this the experiment could
form genetic predictions based on the patterns observed. The cells of the fern are diploid, they
contain two sets of chromosomes. The plant is in the sporophyte generation of it life cycle. At some
point within the sporophyte plant a few of the cells will divide by meiosis and they will be haploid
cells, having a single set of chromosomes. These cells are called spores and will become
independent plants. A multicellular plant develops, and all its cells will have a single set of
chromosomes, this happens when the haploid spores germinate and grow by mitosis. This stage of
the life cycle is called gametophyte generation. The gametophyte plant matures and produces
specialized cells, they will form gametes, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Marked a grid on bottom of Petri plate for easier counting. Add C–Fern spores that are suspended in
distilled water. Gently spread the spores around the surface of the growth medium. Cover and
observe the spore using a dissecting microscope. Repeat for 10 plates, keep in a warm humid
location with lighting. At week two, observe with the dissecting microscope. At this point we can
see the normal and polka dot phenotypes and score the plates and record the results and repeat for all
ten plates. Using a compound microscope on low power we can observe the sperm swimming.
Replace to the warm location for two weeks. Evaluated the observations and determined the results
are not the expected Mendelian 1:1 ratio. Week four we could observe sporophyte plants growing
out of the gametophytes. Using the dissecting microscope and examining the largest leaf, we could
distinguish between the individuals with the normal phenotype and those with the polka dots. Here
the results met the expected 3:1 Mendelian ratio (Raven,

Streetcar Named Desire Literary Elements
All authors use literary elements to get their point across and help them explain the purpose of their
work. In Tennessee Williams' play, A Streetcar Named Desire, he often uses symbols and motifs to
help develop the characters and themes. Williams' use of music, light, and baths are used to explain
Blanche's guilt from her past and the insecurities with her appearance to highlight the gender
expectation that women should remain modest and beautiful to fulfill the illusion of a Southern
Belle. The Varsouviana Polka and the ballad "It's Only a Paper Moon" are used to describe Blanche's
guilty and shameful past that is preventing her from meeting the modesty and decency of a Southern
Belle expectation. The polka music plays occasionally when Blanche is feeling remorse for
husband's death. She says, "There ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It always stops after that" She can't escape the guilt of feeling like she caused his suicide. Similar to
how she cannot let go of her husband's death, so she cannot stop the music, either until she realizes
that he is dead. Williams describes the polka tune as a "rapid, feverish polka tune." "Rapid" music
gives the illusion of panic while "feverish" gives an illusion of agitation. Blanche hears the
Varsouviana whenever she panics about her husband's death and loses her grip on reality. Williams
emphasizes how, "The music is in her mind; she is drinking to escape it and the sense of disaster
closing in on her." She feels as if there is "disaster closing in on her" because whenever she hears the
polka tune she has to realize that she caused her husband's death because she was judgmental unlike
a modest Southern Belle. Blanch sings "It's Only a Paper Moon" which describes the way love turns
the world into a "phony" illusion explaining how if both lovers believe in their imagined love, then
it is no longer "make–believe." She believes that by living in a fantasy she is able to enjoy her life.
By hiding her past to Mitch she is living in the illusion that both

My Life Is A Pallet Of Colors
My life is a pallet of colors, some are beautifully bright and vivid others are dark and sometimes
dull. Throughout my short seventeen years of painting my life I have been learning new techniques
and skills along the way. Mixing the bright and the dark colors into a mural of astounding beauty. I
see the world as my canvas, a way to share joy, happiness, hurt, and emotions with others. A current
medium I love to work with is clay. A ball of earth that can be shaped and molded into something
exquisite. Through the struggle of working with this exerting my strength and might into shaping

down and squish a bowl together the impact it has made on me is irreversible. There were many
days all the stress was bearing down on me and I felt as if my head was about to explode or I would
give up, but I still trekked to the ceramics studio. I'd get my clay and start centering, and pulling,
and shaping. I worked myself into every piece I made. My aggressions, stress, and tensions were
absorbed into the clay as I beared down on it. I never left ceramics downtrodden, even if the wheel
was not treating me kindly. I hope the empty bowls project made an impact on the students involved
as well. I owe them so much gratitude this would not be possible without their help and talents.
They were a part of something great, and they will continue to be. Every bowl that was sold has a

I want to tell you a story about a little girl I met at the empty bowls event. I do not know her name,
how old she is, or even who she was with that night, but she was the biggest impact of the entire

What Is The Theme Of Fantasy And Reality In A Streetcar
Tennessee Williams uses various motifs, background music and light to explore the theme of reality
vs fantasy, eventually showing how Blanche loses hold of reality and slips into insanity. Throughout
the play, Blanche struggles to tell between fantasy and reality, because of her strong desire to remain
youthful, protect her status as a Southern Belle and the traumatic memory of Allan's death.
The motif of light represents both the reality of Blanche's past and present self, thus avoiding light
through using the paper lantern and hiding in shadows when interacting with others show how she
cannot face reality, eventually losing hold of reality altogether. When Blanche starts to love Allan, it
feels like "you suddenly turned a blinding light on something that had always been half a shadow"
(p. 56). Thus light reminds her of the times she had with Allan. Blanche says "you disgust me" (p.
57) after discovering his homosexuality and he shoots himself after that. This ... Show more content

As Stanley reveals her indecent sexual relationships with strangers, Blanche sings "it's only a paper
moon" (p. 60) , similar to the paper lantern she covers the light bulb with, emphasizing how she
believes in deception and hiding the harsh truth. Moreover, she sings that "but it wouldn't be make–
believe if you believe in me" (p.60) , revealing how she believes nothing is made up as long as
others believe in it and how she conceals the truth about her past and present self. The song shows
her belief that fantasy can become reality with love. This emphases her belief that by putting up a
pure virtuous facade before Mitch she can make him want her and thus she can finally be dependent
on him. Therefore, this reveals how she chooses to live in a fantasy and deceive both herself and
others about the truth. Her desire to hold on to fantasy leads to her slowly becoming detached from
reality and eventually

Customs And Traditions Of Filipino Superstitions
Reflection
There are so many interesting Filipino superstitions or folk beliefs associated with New Year's Eve
and New Year's Day in the Philippines. Filipinos say you should observe the following customs and
traditions to ensure that the New Year being welcomed is a prosperous one. Many of these
superstitions bear a strong Chinese influence specially wearing Polka Dots cloths.
According to Filipino folklore, circles symbolize future good luck and riches. No matter what we
wear, though, New Year signifies a new beginning. Flipping open a fresh calendar, with its 12
pristine, as–yet–unmarked months, is perhaps one of the most universally hopeful acts we humans
perform: finally, a chance to shrug off a year's worth of worries, conflicts, and mistakes; finally, a
chance to start over.As quirky and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is also popular practice to open all the doors and windows at the stroke of midnight to let in the
good luck. Many Filipino families also read the Christian bible and attend a church midnight mass.
It is common for many Filipinos to blend religion and superstition in celebrating New Year's Day.
If you want to bring in more wealth next year, wear clothes with polka–dots or other circular
designs. The roundness of the circles is meant to resemble coins and prosperity.
In the other hand, most of the Filipinos say that we can wear whatever dress we want the most
important is we celebrate our year with new beginning with our family. Besides, we can welcome
our year without wearing these polka dots. Thanks giving and praising God in the midnight because
He gives another year for us to enjoy the give of life. Prosperity comes after who sacrifices, through
sacrifices and trusting God comes after success. Traditions, customs, superstitions, and celebrations
in New Year's Eve from around the world are currently in practice of hopes for a happy, healthy, and

Theme Of Sound And Music In A Streetcar Named Desire
The Use of Sound and Music in Tennessee Williams "A Streetcar Named Desire"
Tennessee Williams (1911–1983) was born in Mississippi but moved to New Orleans at the age of
28, there he found the inspiration for his play A Streetcar Named Desire. The play is set in New
Orleans and cooperates the vibe of the setting particularly through music. Williams uses vivid music
in this play which heightens its themes such as madness and social differences.
The most distinct sound throughout the play is a musical piece called the "Blue Piano".
The "Blue Piano" is an ambiguous sound because it is unclear of how it actually sounds like. In the
stage directions it is mostly described with adjectives such as it being "blue", "loud" or "slow",
without given ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Both allusions are a way for Blanche to escape the harshness of the real world. "It's Only a Paper
Moon" is sung by Blanche while she is bathing. She sings, "say, it's only a paper moon, sailing over
a cardboard sea/– But it wouldn't be make–believe if you believed in me" (p.1821). The song
suggests that fantasy can be reality if both lovers believed. It is interesting how the lyrics are reliant
on another person's believe in an imaginary world to make fantasizing acceptable. Therefore, it
seems that Blanche is aware of how she is portrayed by others and how to avoid being seen as
psychotic. It is also made evident that she relies on another person to feel complete, especially
men.... The irony of this scene is blissfully singing she is unaware that Stanley is giving an accurate
description of Blanche's true actions to Stella. Revealing facts about the flamingo etc... The contrast
between reality and fantasy portrayed simultaneously is both clear and ironic. Furthermore, the
"Paper Doll" is described as being heard in the distant during Mitch and Blanche's first encounter.
The singer sings "I'd rather have a Paper Doll to call my own than have a fickle–minded real life
girl" (site). This song is not explicitly derived from Blanche and the lyrics are not written in the play,
instead it is a device which sets the tone for Mitch and Blanche's relationship for those familiar with
the song and to

C-Fern In Population Genetics
Experimental Analysis of C–Fern in Population Genetics
Abstract
C–Fern plants are a strain of Ceratopteris richardii and have a rapid reproductive cycle, making
them perfect subjects in lab to be tested and observed on population genetics. Population genetics is
the study of genetic variation and allelic frequencies on a specific group over an amount of time. It
is a great way to predict future genetic information on more than just the C–Ferns. In this
experiment, two different generations for gametophytes and sporophytes of C–Ferns were observed
and counted for the amount of wild type and polka dot mutant individuals within a sample and a
population. The overall results demonstrated a 1:1 ratio of mutant to wild type in the F1
gametophyte generation for both the sample and population, which was expected. The F1
sporophyte generation demonstrated a 1:1 ratio of mutant to wild type in the sample and a 2:1 ratio
of mutant to wild type in the population. A 3:1 ratio of mutant to wild type was expected in the
sporophytes. It was concluded that the polka dot mutant is recessive in sporophytes and
demonstrates random fertilization in the diploid stage, but not in gametophytes. This process of
population genetics in C–Ferns can be extremely beneficial in other organisms, such as humans.

A population cannot truly survive for a long period of time without some sort of genetic variation. It
was first seen with Gregor Mendel and his research within pea plants. (Hickok) In this experiment, a
different plant's allele frequencies were observed. They go through a reproductive cycle after
meiosis in a 2–week time span, so these variations are easily noticed and perfect for a lab research
setting. They are very easily grown and observed (Project) in a way that is not possible for other
organisms.

side of the family are all from Poland, tracing back the family tree as far as my great grandfather

names found on headstones in Polish graveyards. Because my dad's side of the family is very Polish
there is never a dull moment. At gatherings and weddings we dance some polka and enjoy one an

Under the control of Hitler from 1918–1939 Poland was under serious attack. Concentration camps
were being constructed and Poles were possible targets because, at the time, Poland was home to the
worlds largest Jewish population (Polish Diaspora). In 1939 Poland was invaded by Germany and
was put under the Soviet Union's control. One cultural aspect Poles like to exercises is their right to
freedom and to be different, but under the rule of the USSR it was very hard to express ones
individuality and religion. Communism called for unionism and the Poles disliked this way of life.
This lack of personal freedom handicapped the Polish culture, not allowing it to grow because many
Poles were not known as wealthy. Because Poland was lacking in artistic culture Paris became their
center for literacy and artistic expression (Barnett, 374). Many feared for their lives around this time
and fled to America in the 20's, allowing for the spread of Polish values over seas. This is the main
cause of the Polish diaspora because many of the Poles immigrating to America were Jewish (Polish
Diaspora). During the communist reign a particular group, not like the Jewish Polish community, of
people called the Lemko's had ritual and folk dances that could not be performed because they
feared the government would catch them and punish them like they were to the Jewish Poles(Black,

Weird Al Yankovic Research Paper
Weird Al Yankovic was a little late taking the stage on the BMO Harris Pavilion at Summerfest on
July 4th. Although he was just 15 minutes behind schedule, the lateness is more noticeable at
festivals– considering the bigger acts tend to perform at the same time and most people try to watch
as many shows as possible. Nonetheless, Yankovic took the stage at 10:00pm and ironically opened
his set with "Tacky." He definitely had a ton of loyal fans in the audience, and so the energy in the
building was at an all time high. Yankovic's career spans over 20 years, and he did his best to cram
all of his biggest hits into one set. His set also included "Perform This Way," "Dare to Be Stupid,"
"Fat," and "First World Problems." The majority of his setlist included songs from his Mandatory
Fun album, which was dropped last year. The album features parodies of songs by Pharrell
Williams, Iggy Azalea, Robin Thicke, and Lorde. Yankovic performed "Lame Claim to Fame,"
"Foil" (Lorde's "Royals") and "Word Crimes" (Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines"). It wouldn't be a

Analysis Of Rosie The Riveter Poster 'We Can Do It !'
Rosie the Riveter poster was a 1943 image created by J. Howard Miller portraying a young female

Everything about Rosie contributes to her visual rhetoric from her speech bubble to her blue shirt.
Looking just at her clothing there are many hidden meaning behind everything she wears. Starting
with her red bandana with white polka dots it is a motif that can be seen in many other forms. One

It represents Blanche's emotions and state of mind in the play. In Scene six, when Blanche tells
Mitch about the tragic story of her young husband's death, the reasoning for playing the polka music
throughout the play is revealed. This music serves as a constant reminder of the tragic event in
which Alan shot himself in despair after Blanche had discovered about his male lover. Ever since
then, Blanche has been on a downward spiral. The polka music also symbolizes the memory of the
time when she was young and experienced a true romance. Because of her past Blanche's memory
of romance is gone and all that is left is sadness. The polka music occurs throughout the play
represented symbolism. By the end of the play, it is playing constantly in Blanche's head. She once
says to Mitch "Have you ever had anything caught in your head? Some words, a piece of music?
That goes relentlessly on and on in your head? No, of course you haven't, you dumb angel puss,
you'd never get anything awful caught in your head!" (pg. 140). Blanche is relating to the 'awful'
polka music caught in her head, showing that she can't let go of the past and her memories of Alan.

Examples Of Discrimination In A Streetcar Named Desire
Back in the 1940's, gender stereotypes existed to a larger extent. Tennessee Williams casts a light on
this issue in his play, "A Streetcar Named Desire" in which he shows how Homosexuals; such as
Blanche's husband Allan Grey was cut from the society. During the 1940's, the concept of
homosexuality was completely unusual and many people termed it to be unethical and almost a
crime (Straight from the Closet). As a result, Allan Grey has been briefly mentioned but he has a
huge role to play in Blanche's mental breakdown and Williams has constantly made his presence felt
through Blanche's character.
Homosexuality was illegal in the 1940's and Williams attempts to address this issue through
Blanche's perspective. Blanche represents the old American ... Show more content on

Williams makes use of a plastic theatre element; Varsouviana Polka to show how the tragic suicide
of Blanche's husband is still affecting her. In scene 1, when Stanley asks Blanche about her
marriage, there is a faint Varsouviana polka heard (p.31). This stage direction allows the reader to
know that Blanche is brought to reality where she considers herself guilty for her husband's death.
The intensity of this polka tune is more rapid in scene 9, when Mitch confronts Blanche about her
truth (p.113). The purpose of the rapid polka tune is to make it clear in the reader's mind that
Blanche' s illusion of getting married to Mitch as a way to get rid of her past, is brought back to
reality when Mitch refuses her proposal. It also marks the increasing mental collapse as she realizes
it's the end of her illusion and only reality exists. Towards the end, in scene 11, the Varsouviana tune
plays continuously when the doctor and the nurse come to take Blanche to the mental asylum
(p.139). This final act and the Varsouviana playing in the background helps the reader to clearly
recognize the ultimate mental breakdown of Blanche and eventually facing the

The Function of Music in "A Streetcar Named Desire"
Music has always played an important role in art, but when found in literature, it can either function
as a means of characterization (speaking volumes about certain characters) or as a mood setter,
helping the reader adjust to the atmosphere of the literary work. "Music is so much a part of our
lives that its presence in literature can help readers relate to fictional situations and characters."
(Astor)
In "A Streetcar Named Desire" by Tennessee Williams, music appears in three forms: the "blue

Elaborating on the modernist thrust of Tejano conjunto, Peña addresses the musical innovation

Reoccurring Symbols In A Streetcar Named Desire
Throughout Tennessee Williams' 1947 play A Streetcar Named Desire, symbolism is a reoccurring
device that is used to help improve the audiences understanding of the main messages and ideas that
are trying to be conveyed. Not only does Williams achieve this through representing symbols
through the main protagonists of the play, but he also uses technical directions to enhance the plays
messages. In the text the reoccurring symbols of bathing, lighting and polka music is constantly
represented all throughout. The main messages behind these symbols allow for the play to have an
added drama element as well as providing the audience with a deeper and more thorough
understanding of the play.
Throughout the play A Streetcar Named Desire, symbolism is a reoccurring device that is used to

Williams uses throughout the play as a means for the charter to use it as an escape mechanism,
hence leaving the reality of this world behind. It is through this, that Stanley and his friend's bath to

Theme Of Madness In A Streetcar Named Desire
Many playwrights agree with this school of thought, seeing a person's madness as reasonable or
sensible. Tennessee Williams presents this idea that madness is reasonable when viewed with a
discerning eye in his play A Streetcar Named Desire. In the play, the character Blanche DuBois is
mad, when madness is defined as "mental delusion or the eccentric behavior arising from it"
(Prompt). Throughout the play she displays erratic behavior and appears to be delusional, but one
could argue her madness can be rationalized or justified. Her madness impacts the direction of the
plot, the plot wouldn't be there without it. As the play continues it becomes apparent that Blanche
has created a delusion where everything is okay. When Stella and her are catching up and the
conversation shifts to Blanche's job as a teacher, Blanche immediately lies, saying "I was so

absence, but in fact she was fired for sleeping with an underage student (Williams 100). Later in the
story she lies about her job again, when talking to Mitch, "MITCH: So you are in the teaching

Examples Of Conflict In A Streetcar Named Desire
In A Streetcar Named Desire Tennessee Williams depicts the conflict between a fading Southern
Belle (Blanche Dubois) from an old colonial family and the audacious, rigid, lower class individual
her sister (Stella Kowalski) has married into (Stanley Kowalski). This tempestuous play was set in
the Kowalski's New Orleans apartment in the warm summer of the 1940s. The arrival of Stella's
hysterical and mentally unstable sister (Blanche) capsizes Stanley and Stella's conventional world.
Consequently, Stanley engaged Blanche in a hunt of exposing her many facades because he was
immensely suspicious of her. Stanley was the predator and Blanche was the prey and he cornered
her and revealed all her lies of childlike helplessness, her past intimate relations ... Show more

"I don't listen to you when you are being morbid" (Williams 61) Blanche seeks refuge in the
bathroom and in the water as it's her salvation and it calms her nerves from her extensive sexual
experiences consequently these conversance with strangers are what left her hysterical and prone to
lunacy. On the other hand there's the predator, Stanley Kuwolski, he perceives the bathroom/water
as baptism as it cleanses him of any transgression that he has done. For example, when Stella
instructs Stanley's colleagues to go home and he lost his composure and physically assaults Stella
during the Poker game. "You lay your hands on me and I'll..." (Williams 41) In addition, it soothes
his animalistic temper but it brings about self–pity on his unconscious actions. "I want my baby
down here. Stella, Stella!" (Williams 43) Given these points, one can conceive the notion that the
bathroom/water is what Stanley and Blanche uses to deterge and repose themselves.
From time to time, Tennessee Williams embellishes many musical cues throughout A Streetcar
Named Desire they are used entirely to symbolise Blanche's dwindling sanity, a constant reminder
of her late husband Allen Grey's suicide, her role in it, her

Brief Summary Of A Scene From 'A Streetcar Named Desire'
This scene exposes Blanche's sexual double standard. In the previous scene, she attempts to kiss and
seduce the young man collecting, an interaction that happens outside the boundaries of acceptable or
even reasonable behaviour. She feels free to behave as she likes without fear since nobody knows
about it. On the other hand, since Stanley, Stela and the neighbors know that Blanche is close with
Mitch, she keeps herself inside the boundary of what she sees as social propriety. Therefore, she
pretends to be decent woman in front of Mitch when he asks for a night kiss. When she knows that
Mitch doesn't speak French she teases him by riskily asking "Voulez–vous couches avec moi c'est

My Sister Short Story
My big sister lives in the small town of Miacatlán, Mexico. A beautiful, Hispanic woman, Daniela
isn't related to me in a biological sense, but she has made just as much of an impact on my life as if
she was. As an inspiration, Daniela reminds me that "el error más común es la esperanza en vez de
hacer", or "the most common error is hoping rather than doing."
I met my sister in October of 2010. The moment Daniela strode through our front door, Rico, my
dog and doorbell, greeted her with slobbery kisses just as he greets my family. He must have felt the
same way the rest of us did upon meeting Daniela. For the next week, I would be my family's
translator, my years of Spanish classes being the only connection from my family to this orphan. I
used to have sleepovers all the time, but this one was different. The little girl I only knew from the
photo on the front entry table was now sharing my bed, both of us tucked up to the chin in my pink
polka dot sheets. We didn't make lists of the cutest boys in my grade or gush over One Direction,
which is what my usual sleepovers consisted of. Instead, we lay silent, completely aware of the
unspoken bond we were somehow forming. I was dying to know why Daniela had become an
orphan, but I didn't want to offend her by asking. Following a day of bringing her to Apple Jack's
Orchard and boating around Lake Minnetonka, Daniela and I found ourselves tucked back in my
bed where I finally gained the courage to ask her about her story. She told me she was a dancer.
Daniela was the youngest chosen Pequeño to travel to Minnesota where she would tour multiple
venues in the Twin Cities to perform her dance. Daniela told me that multiple hours of daily intense
dance practice was necessary to even have the honor of being selected to tour in the United States.
Thinking back to the time when I only knew her picture from the yearly godparent Christmas letter,
I thought Daniela would be a reserved, suffering girl. But the girl laying next to me was the
opposite. Passionate, jubilant and loving, we had more in common than I ever speculated. Daniela
fit into my family like a missing puzzle piece. As we dropped her off at the airport, tears filled my
eyes. I felt empty and lonely as I stumbled

Examples Of Stage Directions In A Streetcar Named Desire
Like the majority of plays, stage directions play an important role in bringing the audience into the
play; it helps the readers imagine the scenery. 'A Streetcar Named Desire' by Tennessee Williams
uses stage directions to bring the play to life, but also shows the physical and emotional perspectives
of the characters through them as well. The stage directions of this specific play does more that just
help imagine a scene; it also symbolizes characters emotions and in some scenes and parts the stage
directions foreshadow the future events in the play. An example as to why stage directions have an
important role in 'A Streetcar Named Desire' can be seen in scene one "the colored woman a
neighbor," (Williams 1), in which the 'negro' woman ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
"[She sings 'But it wouldn't be make–believe If you believed in me.'] (Williams 74) This shows to
contrast that is going on inside Blanche's head, reality and fantasy. She is taken by a world that she
created to escape her past, a world full of magic and a place where she feels at peace and love. She
is singing this song while Stanley and Stella discuss her past, but she is too taken by the world she
created.
The drums and trumpets are introduced into the play as Stanley is introduced as well, to give the
audience the first impression of him. The drums play giving him the power of being called a 'man',
and whenever the drums ad trumpets are played, Stanley is or is about to be in action.
The German song played on the white radio in Scene Three, "Wien Wien nur du allein'' starts a
battle between Blanche and Stanley, showing the contrast between the two characters. When the
song starts Blanche immediately starts waltzing towards Mitch, in what seems to be in a sweet
manner and they start to dance, until Stanley chucks a fit and throws the radio out of the window.

Madness In A Streetcar Named Desire Essay
One of the main themes in A Streetcar Named Desire is madness. Blanche is used to depict madness
throughout the play. Her madness stems from one specific event: the suicide of her late husband,
Allan. She feels as though she was the one who pushed him to kill himself. While telling the story of
Allan to Mitch, she says, "It was because of-on the dance–floor-unable to stop myself-I'd
suddenly said-'I saw! I know! You disgust me...'"(96). The tremendous guilt that she feels
contributes to her downfall. Throughout the play there is polka music playing in the background
showing her unstability and that she can't escape her guilt. When Mitch comes over and she starts
hearing the music again, she says, "The 'Varsouviana'! The polka tune they were

we communicate affection to one another. I have no doubt this is what brought is together.
That being said, we have certainly fought about a few things, and the way we come at larger
conflicts is quite different. Funny enough, it is the "Protest Polka" which Dr. Sue Johnson describes
in Hold Me Tight. I feel as though love is pursuing the conflict and working through it in the
moment rather than letting a problem fester. This often causes me to come at the conversation in an
emotionally aggressive manner.

Personal Narrative: My First Year Of Elementary School
I was four years old when I started preschool. I attended a preschool called polka dots. It was
located off of Springhill drive. I was enrolled in Chocachatti Elementary School when I was five
years old. I stayed at this elementary school from kindergarten to fifth grade. Most of my childhood
experiences came from elementary school. Starting elementary school was not a big deal because
my preschool prepared me for it. My school was a very open school were socializing with other kids
was easy. Especially, when there were play stations. We learned to share and socialize at polka dots.
Kindergarten was not a big difference because we still had play time. My first year of elementary

she wore glasses. We did lots of playing and basic addition. We also learned basic spelling. In

Blanche Dubois Symbolism
There are reasons people keep old letters and tear up at certain songs. There are reasons a specific
place or string of words can affect a person so. Everything symbolizes something to someone, no
matter what it happens to be. Tennessee Williams exploits the impact of symbolism on a character in
his play "A Streetcar Named Desire," particularly in his character Blanche Dubois. Before the
audience knows about Blanche's awful, torrid past and secrets, the clever stage directions allude to
Blanche's desire to hide the truth and how it eventually destroys her. In the drama, "A Streetcar
Named Desire," symbolisms used in stage directions like specific lighting, crucial sounds, and
indicative character behavior are used to epitomize Blanche DuBois ... Show more content on

Most times a good sound effect or well–placed song helps symbolize underlying themes or conflict
within a character that can't be expressed in words. Tennessee Williams uses this form of auditory
symbolism frequently when illustrating Blanche's mental spiral into insanity. A frequent symbol
used to indicate one of Blanche's mental reality breaks appears in the form of the Varsouviana polka;
the song blasting when she caused her late husband Alan to commit suicide. "The "Varsouviana"
polka represents Blanche's loss of innocence, and how the suicide of her young husband, Allan Gray,
triggered her mental decline." (Bartlby). Blanche was very young when she married Alan, for her
love for him was "All at once and much, much too completely." (Williams 90) so, when she found
out about Alan's homosexuality and triggered him to suicide, her innocence was gone and she was
alone with overwhelming guilt and a memory that wreaked havoc on her psyche. The tune often
emerges when Blanche's secrets are revealed alerting the audience of Blanche's internal hysteria. It
also makes a frequent appearance when Blanche is on the cusp of happiness. For instance, at the end
of scene six, Blanche confides in her current love interest, Mitch, about Alan and throughout the
entire tale the polka is playing in the background. Towards the end, she reveals that she was an
instigator of his suicide and "[The polka music increases.]" (90). Earlier in the scene, Blanche was
bonding with Mitch. However, when she tells him the tale, the merciless polka crescendos in her
damaged head tormenting her with immense guilt and memories, prohibiting her happiness and
trapping her with those past demons that have only gained power over her as she

Analysis Of A Streetcar Named Desire By Tennessee Williams
Music and literature in collaborative form allow authors to expand elements of themes, plot, and
characters in a way accessible to readers. Although the book, A Streetcar Named Desire by
Tennessee Williams, is essentially the dialogue and stage directions for the adorned Broadway play,
reading it allows for insight into Williams' reasoning in constructing the story and its characters.
Truly, Williams' particular choice of music not only fits the setting of the story, but also allows him
to construct complex characters and establish the mood for the scenes of the play.
Set in New Orleans, it is not surprising that Williams choses to incorporate music fitting to the
setting. At the start of the play, Williams indicates the presence of a "blue piano (that) expresses the
spirit of the life which goes on there" (Williams 3). Located at the Four Deuces, this piano is often
mentioned within the stage directions, and this recurring symbol of blues music emphasizes
moments of passion, love, and life in Elysian Fields. In Scene 2, this blue piano makes an
appearance as it plays louder while Stanley inadvertently reveals to Blanche that Stella is pregnant
(Williams 44). It returns in Scene 3 when Stanley calls out to Stella after their argument. This leads
to an introduction into their lustful relationship, indicated in the stage directions, "as they come
together with low, animal moans" (Williams 67). Williams even carefully notes the distinctions in

Red Polka Dabs
Tired of taking a gander at dividers and couches that have the same exhausting shading? You could
have a go at adding a couple dabs to zest up the insides of your home. Polka specks have made a

On the off chance that you have a white divider, paint medium–sized red polka dabs on it. To

Character Analysis : A Streetcar Named Desire
2016. Many works of literature contain a character who intentionally deceives others. The
character's dishonesty may be intended to help or to hurt. Such a character, for example, may choose
to mislead others for personal safety, to spare someone's feelings, or to carry out a crime. Choose a
novel or play in which a character deceives others. Then, in a well–written essay, analyze the
motives for that character's deception and discuss how the deception contributes to the meaning of
the work as a whole. In Tennessee Williams's play, A Streetcar Named Desire, Blanche DuBois's
personality is built around false pretenses in order to protect herself from facing the reality and the
consequences of her actions. However, her downfall is brought about as a result of her inability to
cope with reality after the truth about her is revealed, which contributes to the play's pessimistic take
on the worth of dreams, as well as its criticism on the inherent flaws of deception. Blanche, in the
climax of the story, lies to her brother–in–law, Stanley, saying, "Deliberate cruelty is not forgivable.
It is the one unforgivable thing in my opinion and it is the one thing of which I have never, never
been guilty" (Williams 156–157). Blanche plainly contradicts herself when she admitted earlier to
her boyfriend that a deliberate act of cruelty on her part led to the death of her first husband. She lies
about this because it distances herself from the uncouth, unrefined behaviour she so

Belle Reve. Belle Reve, which means "beautiful dream" in French, is in fact like a dream to Blanche
– a dream that she wants to experience forever. Her letter to Shep Huntleigh reveals the kind of life
she desires to live. The letter consists of only lies but it shows that had she still been in Belle Reve
she would have been "spending the summer on the wing, making flying visits here and there". It

Theme Of Music In A Streetcar Named Desire
In the field of psychology, it has been proven that music can affect the brain and human moods.
During many moments of stress during the play, "A Streetcar Named Desire", different songs
intertwined with stage directions have portrayed that influence the tone and mood of the scene and
characters within the scenes. There are multiple types of music used during this drama, including the
Blue Piano, Varsouviana Polka, Paper Doll, and It's Only a Paper Moon. Tennessee Williams' use of
the music motif in the stage directions in his play , "A Streetcar Named Desire", to foreshadow
events that represent characters, the social class that is repressive, and mirrors the character of
Blanche DuBois as she loses her grip with reality adds to the audience's understanding of the play as
a whole. One of the first and main music motifs used in the play "A Streetcar Named Desire" by
Tennessee Williams, involves the music theme of "Blue Piano". This recurring symbol and theme
can be seen in the play's opening scene, a tiny "Blue Piano" sounds in a bar around the corner from
Stanley and Stella's apartment. The "Blue Piano" plays as Blanche arrives at Elysian Fields, and is
dominant when she recounts the deaths at Belle Reve (Scene 1), while she kisses the young man
from the newspaper (Scene 5), and when the Doctor leads her away to the asylum (Scene 11). For
instance, "the music of the 'blue piano' drums and trumpet is heard" (Williams, page 164) occurs
when Stanley has just overheard a conversation between Stella and Blanche, in which Blanche is
asking Stella not to "hang back with the brutes" (Williams, page 164). However, when Stanley
walks in, Stella immediately goes to him and "embraces him with both arms" which makes the
music of the 'blue piano' more significant as the blue piano represents Stanley's blue–collar working
class and the vibrancy of that class, it foreshadows the triumph of Stanley over Stella at the end of
the play, and in turn emphasizes Williams social comment on the 1940's America where he can see
Stanley and the values of his class replacing those of Blanche and her class. Again, "The barely
audible 'blue piano' begins to drum up louder." (Williams, page 214) shows the use of the music of

Music and Sound Used in A Streetcar Named Desire
A Streetcar Named Desire–Music and Sound.
In A Street Car Named Desire Tennessee Williams uses music and sound to help symbolise certain
themes, help build on characters and create different types of atmosphere. He uses things like the
'blue piano' and the polka music to help do this.
Tennessee Williams uses the 'blue piano' to symbolise the life in this play, it shows the general
atmosphere of the play. At the end of the opening stage directions we are told this, it says,
'This 'blue piano' expresses the spirit of the life which goes on here.' This is saying as long as the
'blue piano' is playing life still goes on. But when life is disrupted the music from the 'blue ... Show

Another major factor of music in this play is the 'Varsouviana', a type of polka music. Tennessee
Williams uses this to symbolise
Blanches past and her young husband. This is first shown at the end of scene one when Blanche is
reminiscing about her young husband,
'The music of the polka rises up, faint in the background.'
The music is only faint at the moment because we don't know much about her past, but then when
Blanche is telling Mitch about her young husband, in
scene six, the polka music is more distinctive,
'Polka music sounds, in a minor key faint with distance.'
Although the music is still only faint it is much more dramatic and clear now it is been played in a
minor key. There is still things about her past that we don't yet know. Then when she finishes telling
Mitch about her husband the polka music increase and then finally fades away. This could show that
although we know everything about her husband we don't know everything about her past.
Then when Stanley confronts Blanche about her past and gives her a ticket back to Laurel The
'Varsouviana' can be heard.
'The 'Varsouviana' music steals in softly and continues.'
The music represents Laurel and it is slowly stealing her back, it is taking her back to her past. Then
later on in the evening the tune can be heard much more clearly,
'The rapid, feverish

A Streetcar Named Desire: Relationship Between Stanley and...
A Streetcar Named Desire is a play of multifaceted themes and diverse characters with the main
antagonists of the play, Blanche and Stanley infused by their polarized attitudes towards reality and
society 'structured on the basis of the oppositions past/present and paradise lost/present chaos'(*1).
The effect of these conflicting views is the mental deterioration of Blanche's cerebral health that, it
has been said; Stanley an insensitive brute destroyed Blanche with cruel relish and is the architect of
her tragic end. However, due to various events in the play this statement is open to question, for
instance, the word 'insensitive' is debatable, 'insensitive' can be defined as not thinking of other

Stanley overhears these comments as they are 'unaware of his presence' (S4:pg.164*; and wants to
dispose of Blanche to protect his marriage as Blanche has a hysterical determination to urge Stella to
leave Stanley. Stanley refuses to accept Blanches' conduct as she had no right to intervene and
arbitrate as a guest in Stanley's home supporting the idea that Stanley was preparing her downfall all
along.
Blanches' emotional state of mind is also conspicuous at the start of the play as she circumvents
direct light, fearful of showing her fading looks and the light would make her vulnerable to the truth.
Blanche is unable to withstand harsh light, calling the light a 'merciless glare'(S1:pg.120*) because
with Allan's death, the light had gone out of her life and the effect this had is that she wanted dim
lights hiding the reality of her painful memories. This links to the theme of dream and reality as
Blanche, a delicate character, refused 'to accept the reality of her life and attempts to live under
illusion' (*2), living on the borders of life similar to a moth which creates the image of Blanches'
fragility.
The way this theme contributes to Stanley destroying Blanches' mental health is that his necessity
for reality intrudes on Blanches' desperate attempt at surviving illusions. Stanley is 'simple,
straightforward and honest' (S2:pg.137*) and incapable of understanding Blanches' delicate

The Importance Of Polka And Classical Music In My Life
When reflecting on the music of my childhood, two genres came to mind, polka and classical music.
Both play an important role in my life story and an integral part of my childhood life. On one hand,
polka music is one of the reasons that I am here today. You see, both of my grandparents met at local
polka dances here in Wisconsin. Polka music was something I can distinctly remember hearing at
my grandparent's house, whether that be a live band in their barn on the farm when they hosted
polka dances or coming from their stereo as they sorted through a pile of caseates to find their
favorite songs. I can't remember a car ride in my grandparent's car that didn't have polka music on
their radio. Although I remember attending a couple of polka dances as a very young child with my
grandparents, in my mind classical music made a more lasting impression on my life. As I reflect on
my child hood I can still hear in the background classical music playing throughout my family's
house. My parents always had classical music playing on the stereo system in the corner of our
living room, it would be playing all day unless the television was on. When I asked my mom for her
thoughts on what my "personal folk music" would be, she immediately said it would be classical.
She went on to explain that before I was born she even went as far as holding headphones to her
belly and would play classical music for me even while I was still in her womb. Being almost
always surrounded by classical music

How cultural influences shaped my identity

  • 1. Cultural Influences On The Development Of My Personal... There is no doubt that the culture I have experienced in my short 16 years has had an influence on the development of my personal identity. I tend to think of myself as a very cultured person, which is surprising if you take a look at where I come from. Most of the culture I have experienced, like the fine arts and a wide variety of music, is derived from my own curiosity and my relationships with my family and not stimulated by my community. Because of this factor, the person I am today is almost the complete opposite of what my community is. My hometown of Denmark, Wisconsin could very well be considered a cultural wasteland, void of any real, tangible evidence of the finer things in life. This rural town can be characterized by three things: ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Streetcar Named Desire Themes Tennessee Williams weaves A Streetcar Named Desire with various themes. Viewers and readers experience a whirlwind of misogyny, vulnerability, and deceit. Tied with these themes are symbols, which include the Varsouviana polka tune, the use of the song, "It's Only a Paper Moon," and lights and the paper lantern. With these symbols, Williams creates a pathway into the minds of his character Blanche Dubois. The Varsouviana polka tune was playing many years ago, when Blanche saw her young husband, Allan Grey, for the last time. Earlier that day, she found him in bed with an older male friend. Pretending that nothing happened, the three of them had drinks and went out dancing together. While dancing to the polka, Blanche turned to Allan and told him that she was "disgusted" in him. Allan then ran outside and shot himself in the head. The Varsouviana is heard at random times during the play. It is used to show Blanche's guilt and remorse ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The music only ends after she hears the sound of a gunshot in her head. By adding the Varsouviana, Williams was able to set the mood of Blanche being unstable and imagining music that no one else can hear. She can't escape the guilt because she feels as though she caused her husband's suicide. She can't escape her husband's death, therefore she can't escape the music. Another musical piece serves as a symbol in the play. In Scene Seven, Blanche sings "It's Only a Paper Moon," while bathing. "Say, it's only a paper moon, Sailing over a cardboard sea–But it wouldn't be make–believe if you believed in me!" (Williams 120). The lyrics tell the story of how love turns the world into a "phony" fantasy. If both people in the song believe in their imagined little reality, then it is no longer "make–believe." Williams uses the song to summarize Blanche's life. She believes that her lying is the only way she can have a better life, thus making it ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. C-Fern Lab Report This was a multi–week experiment that involved sowing the fern spores in nutrient agar. This allowed for observation and analysis of the life cycle of the C–Fern. With this the experiment could form genetic predictions based on the patterns observed. The cells of the fern are diploid, they contain two sets of chromosomes. The plant is in the sporophyte generation of it life cycle. At some point within the sporophyte plant a few of the cells will divide by meiosis and they will be haploid cells, having a single set of chromosomes. These cells are called spores and will become independent plants. A multicellular plant develops, and all its cells will have a single set of chromosomes, this happens when the haploid spores germinate and grow by mitosis. This stage of the life cycle is called gametophyte generation. The gametophyte plant matures and produces specialized cells, they will form gametes, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Marked a grid on bottom of Petri plate for easier counting. Add C–Fern spores that are suspended in distilled water. Gently spread the spores around the surface of the growth medium. At this point we can see the normal and polka dot phenotypes and score the plates and record the results and repeat for all ten plates. Using a compound microscope on low power we can observe the sperm swimming. Replace to the warm location for two weeks. Evaluated the observations and determined the results are not the expected Mendelian 1:1 ratio. Week four we could observe sporophyte plants growing out of the gametophytes. Using the dissecting microscope and examining the largest leaf, we could distinguish between the individuals with the normal phenotype and those with the polka dots. • 7. Streetcar Named Desire Literary Elements All authors use literary elements to get their point across and help them explain the purpose of their work. In Tennessee Williams' play, A Streetcar Named Desire, he often uses symbols and motifs to help develop the characters and themes. Williams' use of music, light, and baths are used to explain Blanche's guilt from her past and the insecurities with her appearance to highlight the gender expectation that women should remain modest and beautiful to fulfill the illusion of a Southern Belle. The Varsouviana Polka and the ballad "It's Only a Paper Moon" are used to describe Blanche's guilty and shameful past that is preventing her from meeting the modesty and decency of a Southern Belle expectation. The polka music plays occasionally when Blanche is feeling remorse for husband's death. She says, "There ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It always stops after that" She can't escape the guilt of feeling like she caused his suicide. Similar to how she cannot let go of her husband's death, so she cannot stop the music, either until she realizes that he is dead. Williams describes the polka tune as a "rapid, feverish polka tune." "Rapid" music gives the illusion of panic while "feverish" gives an illusion of agitation. Blanche hears the Varsouviana whenever she panics about her husband's death and loses her grip on reality. Williams emphasizes how, "The music is in her mind; she is drinking to escape it and the sense of disaster closing in on her." She feels as if there is "disaster closing in on her" because whenever she hears the polka tune she has to realize that she caused her husband's death because she was judgmental unlike a modest Southern Belle. Blanch sings "It's Only a Paper Moon" which describes the way love turns the world into a "phony" illusion explaining how if both lovers believe in their imagined love, then it is no longer "make–believe." She believes that by living in a fantasy she is able to enjoy her life. By hiding her past to Mitch she is living in the illusion that both ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Throughout my short seventeen years of painting my life I have been learning new techniques and skills along the way. Mixing the bright and the dark colors into a mural of astounding beauty. I see the world as my canvas, a way to share joy, happiness, hurt, and emotions with others. A current medium I love to work with is clay. A ball of earth that can be shaped and molded into something exquisite. Through the struggle of working with this exerting my strength and might into shaping and forming the clay this art has shaped me as well. Dedication, strength, and patience, Patience, PATIENCE. While yes, everyone can sit down and squish a bowl together the impact it has made on me is irreversible. There were many days all the stress was bearing down on me and I felt as if my head was about to explode or I would give up, but I still trekked to the ceramics studio. I'd get my clay and start centering, and pulling, and shaping. I worked myself into every piece I made. My aggressions, stress, and tensions were absorbed into the clay as I beared down on it. I never left ceramics downtrodden, even if the wheel was not treating me kindly. I hope the empty bowls project made an impact on the students involved as well. I owe them so much gratitude this would not be possible without their help and talents. They were a part of something great, and they will continue to be. Every bowl that was sold has a story, it was made with two willing hands and a brilliant mind. I want to tell you a story about a little girl I met at the empty bowls event. I do not know her name, how old she is, or even who she was with that night, but she was the biggest impact of the entire empty bowls project for me. • 11. What Is The Theme Of Fantasy And Reality In A Streetcar Tennessee Williams uses various motifs, background music and light to explore the theme of reality vs fantasy, eventually showing how Blanche loses hold of reality and slips into insanity. Throughout the play, Blanche struggles to tell between fantasy and reality, because of her strong desire to remain youthful, protect her status as a Southern Belle and the traumatic memory of Allan's death. The motif of light represents both the reality of Blanche's past and present self, thus avoiding light through using the paper lantern and hiding in shadows when interacting with others show how she cannot face reality, eventually losing hold of reality altogether. When Blanche starts to love Allan, it feels like "you suddenly turned a blinding light on something that had always been half a shadow" (p. 56). Thus light reminds her of the times she had with Allan. Blanche says "you disgust me" (p. 57) after discovering his homosexuality and he shoots himself after that. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As Stanley reveals her indecent sexual relationships with strangers, Blanche sings "it's only a paper moon" (p. 60) , similar to the paper lantern she covers the light bulb with, emphasizing how she believes in deception and hiding the harsh truth. Moreover, she sings that "but it wouldn't be make– believe if you believe in me" (p.60) , revealing how she believes nothing is made up as long as others believe in it and how she conceals the truth about her past and present self. The song shows her belief that fantasy can become reality with love. This emphases her belief that by putting up a pure virtuous facade before Mitch she can make him want her and thus she can finally be dependent on him. Therefore, this reveals how she chooses to live in a fantasy and deceive both herself and others about the truth. Her desire to hold on to fantasy leads to her slowly becoming detached from reality and eventually ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Customs And Traditions Of Filipino Superstitions Reflection There are so many interesting Filipino superstitions or folk beliefs associated with New Year's Eve and New Year's Day in the Philippines. Filipinos say you should observe the following customs and traditions to ensure that the New Year being welcomed is a prosperous one. Many of these superstitions bear a strong Chinese influence specially wearing Polka Dots cloths. According to Filipino folklore, circles symbolize future good luck and riches. No matter what we wear, though, New Year signifies a new beginning. Flipping open a fresh calendar, with its 12 pristine, as–yet–unmarked months, is perhaps one of the most universally hopeful acts we humans perform: finally, a chance to shrug off a year's worth of worries, conflicts, and mistakes; finally, a chance to start over.As quirky and ... • 15. Theme Of Sound And Music In A Streetcar Named Desire The Use of Sound and Music in Tennessee Williams "A Streetcar Named Desire" Tennessee Williams (1911–1983) was born in Mississippi but moved to New Orleans at the age of 28, there he found the inspiration for his play A Streetcar Named Desire. The play is set in New Orleans and cooperates the vibe of the setting particularly through music. Williams uses vivid music in this play which heightens its themes such as madness and social differences. The most distinct sound throughout the play is a musical piece called the "Blue Piano". The "Blue Piano" is an ambiguous sound because it is unclear of how it actually sounds like. In the stage directions it is mostly described with adjectives such as it being "blue", "loud" or "slow", without given ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Both allusions are a way for Blanche to escape the harshness of the real world. "It's Only a Paper Moon" is sung by Blanche while she is bathing. She sings, "say, it's only a paper moon, sailing over a cardboard sea/– But it wouldn't be make–believe if you believed in me" (p.1821). The song suggests that fantasy can be reality if both lovers believed. It is interesting how the lyrics are reliant on another person's believe in an imaginary world to make fantasizing acceptable. Therefore, it seems that Blanche is aware of how she is portrayed by others and how to avoid being seen as psychotic. It is also made evident that she relies on another person to feel complete, especially men.... The irony of this scene is blissfully singing she is unaware that Stanley is giving an accurate description of Blanche's true actions to Stella. Revealing facts about the flamingo etc... The contrast between reality and fantasy portrayed simultaneously is both clear and ironic. Furthermore, the "Paper Doll" is described as being heard in the distant during Mitch and Blanche's first encounter. The singer sings "I'd rather have a Paper Doll to call my own than have a fickle–minded real life girl" (site). This song is not explicitly derived from Blanche and the lyrics are not written in the play, instead it is a device which sets the tone for Mitch and Blanche's relationship for those familiar with the song and to ... • 17. C-Fern In Population Genetics Experimental Analysis of C–Fern in Population Genetics Abstract C–Fern plants are a strain of Ceratopteris richardii and have a rapid reproductive cycle, making them perfect subjects in lab to be tested and observed on population genetics. Population genetics is the study of genetic variation and allelic frequencies on a specific group over an amount of time. It is a great way to predict future genetic information on more than just the C–Ferns. In this experiment, two different generations for gametophytes and sporophytes of C–Ferns were observed and counted for the amount of wild type and polka dot mutant individuals within a sample and a population. The overall results demonstrated a 1:1 ratio of mutant to wild type in the F1 gametophyte generation for both the sample and population, which was expected. The F1 sporophyte generation demonstrated a 1:1 ratio of mutant to wild type in the sample and a 2:1 ratio of mutant to wild type in the population. A 3:1 ratio of mutant to wild type was expected in the sporophytes. It was concluded that the polka dot mutant is recessive in sporophytes and demonstrates random fertilization in the diploid stage, but not in gametophytes. In 1939 Poland was invaded by Germany and was put under the Soviet Union's control. One cultural aspect Poles like to exercises is their right to freedom and to be different, but under the rule of the USSR it was very hard to express ones individuality and religion. Communism called for unionism and the Poles disliked this way of life. This lack of personal freedom handicapped the Polish culture, not allowing it to grow because many Poles were not known as wealthy. Because Poland was lacking in artistic culture Paris became their center for literacy and artistic expression (Barnett, 374). Many feared for their lives around this time and fled to America in the 20's, allowing for the spread of Polish values over seas. Tennessee Williams presents this idea that madness is reasonable when viewed with a discerning eye in his play A Streetcar Named Desire. In the play, the character Blanche DuBois is mad, when madness is defined as "mental delusion or the eccentric behavior arising from it" (Prompt). Throughout the play she displays erratic behavior and appears to be delusional, but one could argue her madness can be rationalized or justified. Her madness impacts the direction of the plot, the plot wouldn't be there without it. As the play continues it becomes apparent that Blanche has created a delusion where everything is okay. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Most times a good sound effect or well–placed song helps symbolize underlying themes or conflict within a character that can't be expressed in words. Tennessee Williams uses this form of auditory symbolism frequently when illustrating Blanche's mental spiral into insanity. A frequent symbol used to indicate one of Blanche's mental reality breaks appears in the form of the Varsouviana polka; the song blasting when she caused her late husband Alan to commit suicide. "The "Varsouviana" polka represents Blanche's loss of innocence, and how the suicide of her young husband, Allan Gray, triggered her mental decline." (Bartlby). Blanche was very young when she married Alan, for her love for him was "All at once and much, much too completely." • 57. Analysis Of A Streetcar Named Desire By Tennessee Williams Music and literature in collaborative form allow authors to expand elements of themes, plot, and characters in a way accessible to readers. Although the book, A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams, is essentially the dialogue and stage directions for the adorned Broadway play, reading it allows for insight into Williams' reasoning in constructing the story and its characters. Truly, Williams' particular choice of music not only fits the setting of the story, but also allows him to construct complex characters and establish the mood for the scenes of the play. Set in New Orleans, it is not surprising that Williams choses to incorporate music fitting to the setting. At the start of the play, Williams indicates the presence of a "blue piano (that) expresses the spirit of the life which goes on there" (Williams 3). Located at the Four Deuces, this piano is often mentioned within the stage directions, and this recurring symbol of blues music emphasizes moments of passion, love, and life in Elysian Fields. In Scene 2, this blue piano makes an appearance as it plays louder while Stanley inadvertently reveals to Blanche that Stella is pregnant (Williams 44). It returns in Scene 3 when Stanley calls out to Stella after their argument. This leads to an introduction into their lustful relationship, indicated in the stage directions, "as they come together with low, animal moans" (Williams 67). • 63. Character Analysis : A Streetcar Named Desire 2016. Many works of literature contain a character who intentionally deceives others. The character's dishonesty may be intended to help or to hurt. Such a character, for example, may choose to mislead others for personal safety, to spare someone's feelings, or to carry out a crime. Choose a novel or play in which a character deceives others. Then, in a well–written essay, analyze the motives for that character's deception and discuss how the deception contributes to the meaning of the work as a whole. In Tennessee Williams's play, A Streetcar Named Desire, Blanche DuBois's personality is built around false pretenses in order to protect herself from facing the reality and the consequences of her actions. However, her downfall is brought about as a result of her inability to cope with reality after the truth about her is revealed, which contributes to the play's pessimistic take on the worth of dreams, as well as its criticism on the inherent flaws of deception. Blanche, in the climax of the story, lies to her brother–in–law, Stanley, saying, "Deliberate cruelty is not forgivable. It is the one unforgivable thing in my opinion and it is the one thing of which I have never, never been guilty" (Williams 156–157). Blanche plainly contradicts herself when she admitted earlier to her boyfriend that a deliberate act of cruelty on her part led to the death of her first husband. She lies about this because it distances herself from the uncouth, unrefined behaviour she so ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 65. Blanche's Letter To Belle Reve Upon entering Stella's house, the first thing Blanche does is criticize it. She criticizes the house not once but several times throughout the novel showing her disapproval to live in such a place despite residing in it. Even though physically she is present in New Orleans, mentally she is still living in Belle Reve. Belle Reve, which means "beautiful dream" in French, is in fact like a dream to Blanche – a dream that she wants to experience forever. Her letter to Shep Huntleigh reveals the kind of life she desires to live. The letter consists of only lies but it shows that had she still been in Belle Reve she would have been "spending the summer on the wing, making flying visits here and there". It gives the reader an idea of Blanche's incapacity ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 67. Theme Of Music In A Streetcar Named Desire In the field of psychology, it has been proven that music can affect the brain and human moods. During many moments of stress during the play, "A Streetcar Named Desire", different songs intertwined with stage directions have portrayed that influence the tone and mood of the scene and characters within the scenes. There are multiple types of music used during this drama, including the Blue Piano, Varsouviana Polka, Paper Doll, and It's Only a Paper Moon. Tennessee Williams' use of the music motif in the stage directions in his play , "A Streetcar Named Desire", to foreshadow events that represent characters, the social class that is repressive, and mirrors the character of Blanche DuBois as she loses her grip with reality adds to the audience's understanding of the play as a whole. One of the first and main music motifs used in the play "A Streetcar Named Desire" by Tennessee Williams, involves the music theme of "Blue Piano". This recurring symbol and theme can be seen in the play's opening scene, a tiny "Blue Piano" sounds in a bar around the corner from Stanley and Stella's apartment. The "Blue Piano" plays as Blanche arrives at Elysian Fields, and is dominant when she recounts the deaths at Belle Reve (Scene 1), while she kisses the young man from the newspaper (Scene 5), and when the Doctor leads her away to the asylum (Scene 11). For instance, "the music of the 'blue piano' drums and trumpet is heard" (Williams, page 164) occurs when Stanley has just overheard a conversation between Stella and Blanche, in which Blanche is asking Stella not to "hang back with the brutes" (Williams, page 164). However, when Stanley walks in, Stella immediately goes to him and "embraces him with both arms" which makes the music of the 'blue piano' more significant as the blue piano represents Stanley's blue–collar working class and the vibrancy of that class, it foreshadows the triumph of Stanley over Stella at the end of the play, and in turn emphasizes Williams social comment on the 1940's America where he can see Stanley and the values of his class replacing those of Blanche and her class. Again, "The barely audible 'blue piano' begins to drum up louder." (Williams, page 214) shows the use of the music of the 'blue ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 69. Music and Sound Used in A Streetcar Named Desire Essays Music and Sound Used in A Streetcar Named Desire A Streetcar Named Desire–Music and Sound. In A Street Car Named Desire Tennessee Williams uses music and sound to help symbolise certain themes, help build on characters and create different types of atmosphere. He uses things like the 'blue piano' and the polka music to help do this. Tennessee Williams uses the 'blue piano' to symbolise the life in this play, it shows the general atmosphere of the play. At the end of the opening stage directions we are told this, it says, 'This 'blue piano' expresses the spirit of the life which goes on here.' This is saying as long as the 'blue piano' is playing life still goes on. But when life is disrupted the music from the 'blue ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another major factor of music in this play is the 'Varsouviana', a type of polka music. Tennessee Williams uses this to symbolise Blanches past and her young husband. This is first shown at the end of scene one when Blanche is reminiscing about her young husband, 'The music of the polka rises up, faint in the background.' The music is only faint at the moment because we don't know much about her past, but then when Blanche is telling Mitch about her young husband, in scene six, the polka music is more distinctive, 'Polka music sounds, in a minor key faint with distance.' Although the music is still only faint it is much more dramatic and clear now it is been played in a minor key. There is still things about her past that we don't yet know. Then when she finishes telling Mitch about her husband the polka music increase and then finally fades away. This could show that although we know everything about her husband we don't know everything about her past. Then when Stanley confronts Blanche about her past and gives her a ticket back to Laurel The 'Varsouviana' can be heard.

She created and set up her work as a solo show. The title of her exhibit is called Storytelling Time with Marian Baker. The show can be seen from November 27 through December 28. Her art is very whimsical and portrays her life. The art I viewed was unique, but had similar characteristics to each other. During my time at the gallery, I viewed many pieces, but a select number really stood out to me. One piece in particular was the piece, Sisters. This piece showed three sisters, that all looked unique from one another. The background of the piece is white and the sisters look as if they are standing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 74. A Streetcar Named Desire: Relationship Between Stanley and... A Streetcar Named Desire is a play of multifaceted themes and diverse characters with the main antagonists of the play, Blanche and Stanley infused by their polarized attitudes towards reality and society 'structured on the basis of the oppositions past/present and paradise lost/present chaos'(*1). The effect of these conflicting views is the mental deterioration of Blanche's cerebral health that, it has been said; Stanley an insensitive brute destroyed Blanche with cruel relish and is the architect of her tragic end. However, due to various events in the play this statement is open to question, for instance, the word 'insensitive' is debatable, 'insensitive' can be defined as not thinking of other people's feelings but Stanley is aware of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Stanley overhears these comments as they are 'unaware of his presence' (S4:pg.164*; and wants to dispose of Blanche to protect his marriage as Blanche has a hysterical determination to urge Stella to leave Stanley. Stanley refuses to accept Blanches' conduct as she had no right to intervene and arbitrate as a guest in Stanley's home supporting the idea that Stanley was preparing her downfall all along. Blanches' emotional state of mind is also conspicuous at the start of the play as she circumvents direct light, fearful of showing her fading looks and the light would make her vulnerable to the truth. Blanche is unable to withstand harsh light, calling the light a 'merciless glare'(S1:pg.120*) because with Allan's death, the light had gone out of her life and the effect this had is that she wanted dim lights hiding the reality of her painful memories. This links to the theme of dream and reality as Blanche, a delicate character, refused 'to accept the reality of her life and attempts to live under illusion' (*2), living on the borders of life similar to a moth which creates the image of Blanches' fragility. The way this theme contributes to Stanley destroying Blanches' mental health is that his necessity for reality intrudes on Blanches' desperate attempt at surviving illusions. Stanley is 'simple, straightforward and honest' (S2:pg.137*) and incapable of understanding Blanches' delicate ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 76. The Importance Of Polka And Classical Music In My Life When reflecting on the music of my childhood, two genres came to mind, polka and classical music. Both play an important role in my life story and an integral part of my childhood life. On one hand, polka music is one of the reasons that I am here today. You see, both of my grandparents met at local polka dances here in Wisconsin. Polka music was something I can distinctly remember hearing at my grandparent's house, whether that be a live band in their barn on the farm when they hosted polka dances or coming from their stereo as they sorted through a pile of caseates to find their favorite songs. I can't remember a car ride in my grandparent's car that didn't have polka music on their radio. Although I remember attending a couple of polka dances as a very young child with my grandparents, in my mind classical music made a more lasting impression on my life. As I reflect on my child hood I can still hear in the background classical music playing throughout my family's house. My parents always had classical music playing on the stereo system in the corner of our living room, it would be playing all day unless the television was on. When I asked my mom for her thoughts on what my "personal folk music" would be, she immediately said it would be classical. She went on to explain that before I was born she even went as far as holding headphones to her belly and would play classical music for me even while I was still in her womb. Being almost always surrounded by classical music ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
