ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
I would like to thank our Professor for providing me
with this wonderful opportunity to work on a project
with the topic Indicators of development. The
completion of the project would not have been
possible without their help and insights.

INTRODUCTION
INTRODUCTION TO THE TOPIC
IN THIS PRESENTATION WE WILL BE COVERING THE TOPIC CITIZEN JOURNALISM,, WE’LL BE COVERING THE POINTS
LIKE WHAT IT IS, HOW DID IT ORIGIN AND JUST LIKE EVERY THING THE LIGHT AND SHADOW PARTS.
LETS BEGIN!
INTRODUCTION
03
WHAT IS CITIZEN
JOURNALISM
"playing an active role in the process
of collecting, reporting, analyzing, and
disseminating news and information."
CITIZEN
JOURNALISM
• Citizen journalism, also known as collaborative
media, participatory journalism, democratic
journalism, guerrilla journalism or street
journalism, is based upon public citizens "playing
an active role in the process of collecting,
reporting, analyzing, and disseminating news and
information."Jay Rosen offers a simpler definition:
"W hen the people formerly known as the
audience employ the press tools they have in
their possession to inform one another."The
underlying principle of citizen journalism is that
ordinary people, not professional journalists, can
be the main creators and distributors of
news.Citizen journalism should not be confused
with community journalism or civic journalism,
both of which are practiced by professional
journalists; collaborative journalism, which is the
practice of professional and non -professional
journalists working together;[10] and social
journalism, which denotes a digital publication
with a hybrid of professional and non -
professional journalism.
04
ORIGIN OF CITIZEN
JOURNALISM
. Oh Yeon Ho’s declared that
“Everybody is a reporter” in the year
2000.
ORIGIN
• With high-quality cameras and the fastest internet facilities,
citizen journalism has become easier today. But, it all
started with 727 citizens in South Korea. Being dissatisfied
with the traditional media and their reporting, the Korean
entrepreneur, Oh Yeon Ho’s declared that “Everybody is a
reporter” in the year 2000. Unable to bear the costs of hiring
reporters for a professional news medium, OhmyNews, a
news website was started. The speciality of this website was,
any person could write and report the news. Gradually, the
count of the citizen reporters and the news started to
increase and it was noted that the reporters count touched
50,000 plus in the year 2007. Citizen journalists from 100
countries reported.
05
FUNCTIONS OF
CITIZEN JOURNALISM
It is continuing to contribute to the
aspect of receiving information from
every corner of the world.
FUNCTIONS OF CITIZEN JOURNALISM
The role that social media played in provoking and fanning the violence and mayhem which
started as Free Zuma protests (and snowballed into a tangled mess of anarchy) is obvious. It
is also now clear that the incitement of the protests was planned and executed via WhatsApp
and Twitter.
In fact, the meaning is in the name: any citizen who is
recording and reporting the events happening around
them can be considered a citizen journalist. As Greg
Marinovich, South African photojournalist, filmmaker and
co-author of The Bang Bang Club, puts it: “Anyone out
there can stumble across or come across news. Whether
or not you have a camera. Maybe a cellphone, a
notebook. Even just a great memory.”
06
BENEFITS OF CITIZEN
JOURNALISM
“Internet k alau sudah berada di desk top laptop, k om puter bergerak ,
dan ponsep pintar, tam pak seperti benda tak berjiwa . Ak an tetapi, di
dalam nya terjadi pergerak an dan perubahan yang dahsyat, penuh
gejolak , dan hasiln ya sulit diduga”
― Pepih Nugraha, Citizen Journalism
BENEFITS
Citizen journalism has more advantages than
disadvantages.
• There are first-hand contributors during a
critical instance
• Offers an opportunity for talented people who
are not professionals
• It offers a good amount of space for
marginalized groups
• It talks about the problems that mainstream
media forgot to throw the spotlight on
• Low cost but easy access to a large set of
audience.
• Simply, threats don’t play much of a role
here.
• It empowers local communities
• Citizen journalists who speak for their public
work for the betterment of their community.
CONCLUSION
• IN THIS PRESENTATION W E W ENT THROUGH THE SLIDES AND DEVELOPED A BRIEF UNDERSTANDING ABOUT THE TOPIC
CITIZEN JOURNALISM. IT HAS ITS OW N MERITS AND DEMERITS BUT THE FACT IS THAT THE MERITS ARE FAR MORE THAN
THE DEMERITS. W E COULD ALSO DEVELOP A CLEAR UNDERSTANDING ABOUT ITS ORIGIN, FUNCTIONS AND BENEFITS
THANKS
