The document is a media studies evaluation of a music magazine created by Paris Brett.
The evaluation discusses how Brett followed conventions of real pop magazines in developing the forms and layout of their magazine. Brett aligned images and text and placed the masthead in standard positions to make the magazine appear more professional and attractive to the target audience.
Brett chose bright pink colors, a smiling cover model, and advertised a free poster to represent pop music as happy and cheesy and attract their target tweens audience.
Top of the Pops would be a suitable media institution to distribute the magazine as Brett modeled it after one of their magazines and followed magazine conventions.
Through creating the magazine, Brett learned photography, image editing

Evaluation
1. In my music magazine, I have developed the forms and conventions from a
real pop magazine by following the structure and layout. When I looked at
other pop magazine, I noticed that the mastheads were placed in a similar
position so I decided to do the same. As I thought that by not following the
convention my music magazine would not appear to be attractive to my
target audience. Most magazines have features that are conventions for any
magazine. Alignment is one of them, when I looked at other pop magazines
the images and text are aligned and well presented, and this made me come
to a conclusion that I should follow this magazine to help create mine. There
was one moment when I wanted to challenge the conventions; this was with
my front image because I didn’t want to have my front image because I didn’t
want to have my front image covering the whole magazine. When I blocked
my magazine the layout has changed so my magazine follows the
conventions and the front image was moved so it covered the whole
magazine.
2. My music magazine represents pop and with pop its presented as happy,
bright colours and kind of cheesy. So for my magazine I used the colour pink,
as it is feminine, I chose a person that is smiling for my front image. I added a
plug, which said ‘free poster inside’, this is cheesy however, it will attract my
target audience.
3. The media institution that might distribute my magazine would be a
company like Top of the Pops; this is because when I was creating the music
magazine I was using one of their own magazines to help create mine. Top of
the Pops might distribute my magazine because its similar to theirs, and it is
following the conventions of a magazine.
4. The target audience for my music magazine would be tweens, because Pop
mainly consists of catchy, young tunes and most of the people are young and
usually happy. When I look at most pop magazines the colours appear to be
bright and feminine so, I have made my magazine bright and appealing to
young girls to follow the conventions of a pop magazine.
5. I attracted my audience by using alignment; by doing this it has made my
magazine more attractive and suitable for a pop magazine. I have placed the
images in correct positions so it helps to attract them to buy the magazine
and it is eye catching.
6. The technologies that I have gained from creating a magazine was learning
how to Photoshop. I was able to remove the background from my front cover
image. I also learnt how to change someone appearance e.g. editing the face.
As I created my magazine on a Mac computer I learnt how to navigate and
use new equipment. I learnt how to use a professional camera with and

without flash. I learnt what angle to take the image from, and how to zoom in
and out of a camera.
7. When I first attempted my preliminary task I didn’t really understand about
how to structure and the layout of a magazine. My first magazine wasn’t
attractive and appealing. It also didn’t have a lot of text and the images were
taken from a phone so the quality wasn’t as good. However, when I went to
produce my music magazine I learnt how to improve my magazine and how
to align it. The images were better quality as I took it on a professional
camera rather than my phone and I understood how to use the technology
more.
