Dexona Injections (Generic Dexamethasone
Sodium Phosphate Injections) are used to treat
many different conditions such as allergic
disorders, skin conditions, ulcerative colitis,
arthritis, lupus, psoriasis, Cerebral oedema(raised
intracranial pressure),auto-immune, endocrine,
pulmonary, blood disorders or breathing
disorders.

Active Ingredient
The active ingredient present in Dexona Injections is
Dexamethasone Sodium Phosphate. Each injection contains 2 ml of
solution per ampoule. Each ml of Dexona injection contains
Dexamethasone Sodium Phosphate equivalent to 4 mg of
Dexamethasone.

Dexamethasone Sodium Phosphate
Injections are available under various Drug
trade names that include Dexona, Adexa,
Alexa, Biodexone, Baksa (20 ml), Beksa,
Decdan, Demisone (10 ml), Deosone,
Dexacip, Dexapar, Dexasone (10 ml),
Osidex, Wymesone (2 ml) and Zyzone.

Uses of Dexona Injections
Dexamethasone Sodium Phosphate is a glucocorticoid and belongs to a group of
medicines called corticosteroids. It may be used to treat an inactive or underactive
adrenal gland or to treat a number of different diseases such as certain immune
disorders and skin problems, asthma,blood/hormone disorders, allergic reactions,
eye problems, breathing problems, bowel disorders, cancer,immune system
disorders or arthritis. It is also used as a test for an adrenal gland disorder
(Cushing's syndrome).
Corticosteroids decrease your immune system's response to various diseases to
reduce symptoms such as swelling and allergic-type reactions.
Except for its use in the treatment of underactive adrenal glands, dexamethasone
phosphate (as sodium) does not cure disease; it treats the symptoms.
This injectable form of Dexamethasone (Dexona Injections) is used when a similar
drug cannot be taken by mouth or when a very fast response is needed, especially
in patients with severe medical conditions.

Dexona Injections Dosage
The dosage of Dexona Injections (Generic Dexamethasone Sodium
Phosphate Injections) is given below:
Shock: A single I.V. injection of 2 to 6 mg/kg bodyweight which may be
repeated in 2 to 6 hours if shock persists.
Cerebral Oedema: An initial dose of 10 mg I.V. followed by 4 mg I.M. every
6 hours until the symptoms of oedema subside (usually after 12 to 24
hours). After 2 to 4 days the dosage should be reduced and gradually
stopped over a period of 5 to 7 days.
Intra-Synovial and Soft Tissue Injections: Dosage varies with the degree of
inflammation and the size and location of the affected area. Injections may
be repeated from once every 3 to 5 days (eg. for bursae) to once every 2 to
3 weeks (for joints).

Dexona Injections Dosage
The dosage of Dexona Injections (Generic Dexamethasone Sodium
Phosphate Injections) is given below:
Acute Allergic Disorders: In acute, self-limited allergic disorders or acute
exacerbations of chronic allergic disorders, the following dosage schedule
combining parenteral and oral therapy is suggested:
Dexamethasone Sodium Phosphate Injection, USP 4 mg/mL; first day, 1 or 2
mL (4 or 8 mg), intramuscularly.
Dexamethasone Sodium Phosphate Tablets, 0.75 mg; second and third days,
4 tablets in two divided doses each day; fourth day, 2 tablets in two divided
doses; fifth and sixth days, 1 tablet each day; seventh day, no treatment;
eighth day, follow-up visit.

Contraindications
Dexona Injections are contraindicated in patients with a
hypersensitivity to Dexamethasone Sodium Phosphate or any other
component of this medication. Another contraindication is systemic
fungal infections or other systemic infections unless specific anti-
infective therapy is given.
Administration of live virus vaccines is contraindicated. In patients
with myasthenia gravis, peptic ulcer, osteoporosis or psychoses. The 8
mg/2 mL vial formulation is contraindicated in patients with a known
hypersensitivity to sulfites. This medicine is contraindicated in cases of
Bacteraemia and Unstable joints. Infection at the injection site e.g.
septic arthritis resulting from gonorrhoea or tuberculosis.

Storage Instructions
Dexona Injections (Generic Dexamethasone
Sodium Phosphate Injections) have to be
stored at controlled room temperature i.e.
from 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F) with
excursions permitted between 15° to 30°C
(59° to 86°F).
Keep this as well as all other medicines away
from children and pets.

Warnings
Serious Neurologic Adverse Reactions with Epidural Administration:
Serious neurologic events, some resulting in death, have been reported with
epidural injection of corticosteroids. Specific events reported include, but
are not limited to, spinal cord infarction, paraplegia, quadriplegia, cortical
blindness, and stroke.
Corticosteroids may exacerbate systemic fungal infections and, therefore,
should not be administered in the presence of such infections unless they
are needed to control drug reactions due to amphotericin B.
Drug-induced secondary adrenocortical insufficiency may result from too
rapid withdrawal of corticosteroids and may be minimized by gradual
reduction of dosage.
Corticosteroids could mask some signs of infection, and new infections may
appear during their use. There may be decreased resistance and inability to
localize infection when corticosteroids are used.

Warnings
In cerebral malaria, a double-blind trial has shown that the use of
corticosteroids is associated with prolongation of coma and a higher
incidence of pneumonia and gastrointestinal bleeding.
Corticosteroids can activate latent amebiasis. Hence, it is recommended
that latent or active amebiasis be ruled out before starting corticosteroid
therapy in any patient who has spent time in the tropics or in any patient
with unexplained diarrhea.
Prolonged use of corticosteroids may produce posterior subcapsular
cataracts, glaucoma with possible damage to the optic nerves, and may
enhance the establishment of secondary ocular infections due to fungi or
viruses.
Average and large doses of cortisone or hydrocortisone can cause elevation
of blood pressure, salt and water retention, and increased excretion of
potassium.

Warnings
Administration of live virus vaccines, including smallpox, is contraindicated
in individuals receiving immunosuppressive doses of corticosteroids. If
inactivated viral or bacterial vaccines are administered to individuals
receiving immunosuppressive doses of corticosteroids, the expected serum
antibody response may not be obtained.
The use of Dexona injection, in active tuberculosis should be restricted to
those cases of fulminating or disseminated tuberculosis in which the
corticosteroid is used for the management of the disease along with
appropriate antituberculous regimen.

Side Effects
Common Side effects of Dexona (Dexamethasone Sodium Phosphate
Injections) may include:fluid retention (swelling in your hands or ankles);
sleep problems (insomnia), mood changes; acne, dry skin, thinning skin,
bruising or discoloration; slow wound healing; increased sweating,
increased hair growth; headache, dizziness, spinning sensation; nausea,
stomach pain, bloating; muscle weakness; or changes in the shape or
location of body fat (especially in your arms, legs, face, neck, breasts, and
waist).
Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction to
Dexamethasone: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips,
tongue, or throat.

Side Effects
Call your doctor at once if you have: muscle tightness, weakness, or limp feeling;
problems with your vision; shortness of breath (even with mild exertion),
swelling, rapid weight gain; severe depression, unusual thoughts or behavior; a
seizure (convulsions); bloody or tarry stools, coughing up blood; lower back
pain, blood in your urine, little or no urination; confusion, numbness or tingly
feeling around your mouth; fast or slow heart rate, weak pulse; a pancreas
disorder - severe pain in your upper stomach spreading to your back, nausea and
vomiting, fast heart rate; low potassium - leg cramps, constipation, irregular
heartbeats, fluttering in your chest, increased thirst or urination, numbness or
tingling; or dangerously high blood pressure - severe headache, blurred vision,
pounding in your neck or ears, nosebleed, anxiety.

Dexona Overdose Symptoms
Symptoms: There are two categories of toxic effects from therapeutic use
of glucocorticoids:
Acute adrenal insufficiency due to too rapid withdrawal of corticosteroids
after long-term use and induction of Cushingoid changes from continued
use of large doses. Abrupt corticosteroid withdrawal results in fever,
myalgia, arthralgia, malaise, anorexia, nausea, desquamation of skin,
orthostatic hypotension, dizziness, fainting, dyspnea and hypoglycemia.
Cushing-like changes include moonface, central obesity, striae, hirsutism,
acne ecchymoses, hypertension, osteoporosis, myopathy, sexual
dysfunction, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, peptic ulcer, increased susceptibility
to infection and electrolyte and fluid imbalance.

Treatment of Dexona Overdose
Treatment: Recovery of normal adrenal and pituitary function may
require up to 9 months.
Tapering of the steroid should be gradual under the supervision of a
physician. Frequent lab tests are necessary. Supplementation is required
during periods of stress (i.e. illness, surgery or injury). Eventually
reduce to the lowest dose that will control the symptoms or discontinue
the corticosteroid completely. For large, acute overdose, treatment
includes usual supportive measures. Anaphylactic and hypersensitivity
reactions may be treated with epinephrine, positive artificial
respiration, and Aminophylline. Keep the patient warm and quiet.

Dexona Injections During Pregnancy
Dexamethasone Sodium Phosphate (Dexona Injections) is classified by
the US FDA as Pregnancy Category C. In animal reproduction studies,
corticosteroids have been found to cause malformations of various kinds
(cleft palate, skeletal malformations) and there are no adequate and well-
controlled studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant use of
the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks.
Since adequate human reproduction studies have not been done with
corticosteroids, use of these drugs in pregnancy or in women of
childbearing potential requires that the anticipated benefits be weighed
against the possible hazards to the mother and fetus.
