Omnacortil Tablets (Generic Prednisolone Tablets)

Omnacortil Tablets (Generic Prednisolone Tablets) belongs
to a group of medicines called steroids, and is a man-made
form of a natural substance (corticosteroid hormone) made
by the adrenal gland. Prednisolone is used to treat
conditions such as arthritis, blood problems, immune system
disorders, skin and eye conditions, breathing problems,
cancer, and severe allergies.
It decreases your immune system's response to various
diseases to reduce symptoms such as pain, swelling and
allergic-type reactions.

Active Ingredient
The active ingredient present in Omnacortil tablets is
Prednisolone. Each dispersible tablet contains 2.5 mg, 5
mg, 10 mg, 20 mg, 30 mg or 40 mg of Prednisolone I. P.

Prednisolone tablets are available under
various drug trade names that include Flo-
Pred, Pediapred, Orapred, Orapred ODT,
Omnacortil, Deltacortil, Orapred, Prelone,
Hostacortin-H, Millipred, Predone and
Wysolone.

Uses of Omnacortil Tablets
Omnacortil tablets (Generic Prednisolone orally disintegrating tablets) provides
relief for inflamed areas of the body. It is used to treat a number of different
conditions, such as inflammation (swelling), severe allergies, adrenal problems,
arthritis, asthma, blood or bone marrow problems, eye or vision problems, lupus,
skin conditions, kidney problems, ulcerative colitis, and flare-ups of multiple
sclerosis. Prednisolone is a corticosteroid (cortisone-like medicine or steroid). It
works on the immune system to help relieve swelling, redness, itching, and
allergic reactions.
Prednisolone is a corticosteroid indicated as an anti-inflammatory or
immunosuppressive agent for certain allergic, dermatologic, gastrointestinal,
hematologic, ophthalmologic, nervous system, renal, respiratory, rheumatologic,
specific infectious diseases or conditions and organ transplantation, for the
treatment of certain endocrine conditions and for palliation of certain neoplastic
conditions.

Omnacortil Tablets Dosage
The dosage of Omnacortil tablets (Generic Prednisolone orally
disintegrating tablets) is given below:
The recommended Prednisolone (Omnacortil orally disintegrating tablets) dosage
is to be administered orally. Take with food to avoid gastrointestinal (GI)
irritation. Dosing should be individualized based on disease and patient response.
Adjust or maintain initial dose until a satisfactory response is obtained; then,
gradually in small decrements at appropriate intervals decrease to the lowest dose
that maintains an adequate clinical response.
Initial Dose: 5 mg to 60 mg of Prednisolone.
Maintenance Dose: Use lowest dosage that will maintain an adequate clinical
response.
Discontinuation: Withdraw gradually if discontinuing long-term or high-dose
therapy.

Contraindications
Omnacortil tablets are contraindicated in persons with a
hypersensitivity (allergy) to Prednisolone or any of the other
ingredients of this medicine. Other contraindications include
systemic fungal infection.
Administration of live vaccines is contraindicated in patients
receiving corticosteroids in immunosuppressive doses.

Storage Instructions
Omnacortil tablets (Generic Prednisolone orally
disintegrating tablets) have to be stored at
controlled room temperature i.e. from 20°C to
25°C (68°F to 77°F) with excursions permitted
between 15° to 30°C (59° to 86°F).
Keep this as well as all other medicines away
from children and pets.

Warnings
Hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis suppression, Cushing's syndrome and
hyperglycemia: Monitor patients for these conditions with chronic use of
Omnacortil (Prednisolone orally disintegrating tablets). Doses have to be tapered
gradually for withdrawal after chronic use.
Infections: Increased susceptibility to new infection and increased risk of
exacerbation, dissemination, or reactivation of latent infection. Signs and
symptoms of infection may be masked.
Elevated blood pressure, salt and water retention, and hypokalemia: Monitor the
blood pressure and sodium, potassium serum levels.
GI perforation: Increased risk in patients with certain GI disorders. Signs and
symptoms can be masked.
Behavioral and mood disturbances: May include euphoria, insomnia, mood
swings, personality changes, severe depression, and psychosis. Existing conditions
may be aggravated.

Warnings
Decreases in bone density: Monitor bone density in patients receiving long term
corticosteroid therapy.
Ophthalmic effects: May include cataracts, infections and glaucoma. Monitor
intraocular pressure in case corticosteroid therapy is continued for more than 6
weeks.
Live or live attenuated vaccines: Do not administer live or live attenuated
vaccines to patients receiving immunosuppressive doses of corticosteroids.
Negative effects on growth and development: Pediatric patients on long-term
corticosteroid therapy should to be monitored.
Use in pregnancy: Fetal harm can occur with first trimester use. Inform women of
potential harm to the fetus.

Side Effects
Side effects of Prednisolone (Omnacortil orally disintegrating tablets) include
Nausea, heartburn, headache, dizziness, menstrual period changes, trouble
sleeping, increased sweating, acne, fluid retention, alteration in glucose
tolerance, elevation in blood pressure, behavioral and mood changes, increased
appetite and weight gain. In case any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your
doctor or pharmacist promptly.
Since this medicine works by weakening the immune system, it may lower your
ability to fight infections. This may make you more likely to get a serious (rarely
fatal) infection or make any infection you have worse. Inform your doctor right
away if you have any signs of infection (such as cough, sore throat, fever, chills).
Use of this medicine for prolonged or repeated periods may result in oral thrush or
a yeast infection. Contact your doctor in case any white patches in the mouth or a
change in vaginal discharge is observed.

Side Effects
This medication can rarely make your blood sugar level rise, which can cause or worsen
diabetes. Inform your doctor right away in case you develop symptoms of high blood sugar
such as increased thirst and urination. If you already have diabetes, be sure to check your
blood sugars regularly. Your doctor may need to adjust your diabetes medication, exercise
program, or diet.
Inform your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur:
unusual tiredness, swelling ankles/feet, unusual weight gain, vision problems, easy
bruising/bleeding, puffy face, unusual hair growth, mental/mood changes (such as
depression, mood swings, agitation), muscle weakness/pain, thinning skin, slow wound
healing, bone pain.
Omnacortil (Prednisolone orally disintegrating tablets) may rarely cause serious (rarely
fatal) bleeding from the stomach or intestines. If you notice any of the following unlikely
but serious side effects, consult your doctor right away: black/bloody stools, vomit that
looks like coffee grounds, persistent stomach/abdominal pain.

Side Effects
Seek immediate medical attention in case any of these rare but
serious side effects occur: chest pain, seizures.
A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, seek
immediate medical attention if you notice any symptoms of a serious
allergic reaction: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the
face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing.
This is not a complete list of possible side effects.

Overdose
The effects of accidental ingestion of large quantities of Prednisolone
(Omnacortil orally disintegrating tablets) over a very small interval of time have
not been reported, but prolonged use of this medicine can produce mental
symptoms, moon face, abnormal fat deposits, fluid retention, excessive appetite,
weight gain, hypertrichosis, acne, striae, ecchymosis, increased sweating,
pigmentation, dry scaly skin, thinning scalp hair, increased blood pressure,
tachycardia, thrombophlebitis, decreased resistance to infection, negative
nitrogen balance with delayed bone and wound healing, headache, weakness,
menstrual disorders, accentuated menopausal symptoms, neuropathy, fractures,
osteoporosis, peptic ulcer, decreased glucose tolerance, hypokalemia, and
adrenal insufficiency.
Hepatomegaly and abdominal distention have been observed in children.

Overdose
Treatment of acute overdosage of Prednisolone (Omnacortil orally
disintegrating tablets) is by immediate gastric lavage or emesis
followed by supportive and symptomatic therapy.
For chronic overdosage in the face of severe disease requiring
continuous steroid therapy, the dosage of Prednisolone may be reduced
only temporarily, or alternate day treatment may be introduced.

Omnacortil Tablets During Pregnancy
Prednisolone (Omnacortil orally disintegrating tablets) has been
classified by the US FDA as Pregnancy Category D.
Animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus
and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in humans, but
potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant women
despite potential risks.
Controlled studies in humans suggest maternal corticosteroid use in the
first trimester produces a slight increased risk of cleft lip with or without
cleft palate (increased from 1 out of 1000 to 3 to 5 out of 1000 infants).
Reduced placental and birth weight have been recorded in animals and
humans after long term treatment.

Omnacortil Tablets During Pregnancy
Thus, Prednisolone can cause fetal harm when used during
pregnancy. Omnacortil should be used during pregnancy only
if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus.
If this drug is used during pregnancy, or if the patient
becomes pregnant while using this drug, the patient should
be apprised of the potential hazard to the fetus.
Infants born to mothers who have received corticosteroids
during pregnancy should be carefully observed for signs of
hypoadrenalism.
