adults, elderly and children over 1 year for the relief of the

The dosage of Betnovate Cream (Betamethasone Valerate

Apply a thin layer of Betnovate Cream once or twice daily and gently
rub in, using only enough to cover the entire affected area. Wash
your hands after use unless treating the hands.
Do not use this medicine on large areas of the body for a long time

Contraindications
Betnovate Cream is contraindicated in persons with a
hypersensitivity (allergy) to Betamethasone Valerate or any
of the other ingredients of this medicine.
The following conditions should not be treated with
Betamethasone Valerate cream: Untreated cutaneous
infections, Rosacea, Acne vulgaris, Pruritus without
inflammation, Perianal and genital pruritus and Perioral
dermatitis. Betamethasone valerate is also contraindicated in
dermatoses in infants under one year of age, including
dermatitis.

Warnings
Systemic absorption of topical corticosteroids has produced reversible
hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis suppression, manifestations
of Cushing's syndrome, hyperglycemia, and glucosuria in some
patients.
Conditions which augment systemic absorption include the application
of the more potent steroids, use over large surface areas, prolonged
use, and the addition of occlusive dressings.
Therefore, patients receiving a large dose of a potent topical steroid
applied to a large surface area should be evaluated periodically for
evidence of HPA axis suppression. In case HPA axis suppression is
noted, an attempt should be made to withdraw the drug, to reduce the
frequency of application, or substitute to a less potent steroid.

Warnings
Recovery of HPA axis function is generally prompt and complete
upon discontinuation of the medicine. Infrequently, signs and
symptoms of steroid withdrawal may occur, requiring
supplemental systemic corticosteroids.
Suitable precautions should be taken when using topical
corticosteroids in patients with stasis dermatitis and other skin
diseases with impaired circulation.
Topical corticosteroids should be used with caution on lesions
close to the eye because systemic absorption may cause
increased intraocular pressure, glaucoma or cataracts.

Warnings
Pediatric patients may absorb proportionally larger amounts of topical
corticosteroids and thus be more susceptible to systemic toxicity.
In case irritation develops, topical corticosteroids should be
discontinued and appropriate therapy instituted.
In the presence of dermatological infections, the use of an appropriate
antifungal or antibacterial agent should be instituted.
If a favorable response does not occur promptly, the corticosteroid

The following local side effects are reported

Overdose
Topically applied corticosteroids like Betnovate cream can be absorbed in
sufficient amounts to produce systemic effects. Excessive prolonged use
may suppress hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis function, resulting
in secondary adrenal insufficiency, which is usually reversible. Excessive
prolonged use may also produce manifestations of hypercorticisim,
including Cushing's disease.
Acute overdosage is very unlikely to occur, however, in the case of
chronic overdosage or misuse the features of hypercortisolism may occur.
In the event of overdose, Betamethasone Valerate should be withdrawn
gradually by reducing the frequency of application, or by substituting a
less potent corticosteroid because of the risk of glucocorticosteroid
insufficiency.

Betnovate Cream During Pregnancy
Betnovate Cream (Betamethasone Valerate Cream) has been
classified by the US FDA as Pregnancy Category C.
Corticosteroids are generally teratogenic in laboratory animals when
administered systemically at relatively low dosage levels. Some
corticosteroids have been shown to be teratogenic after dermal application
in laboratory animals. There are no adequate and well-controlled studies in
pregnant women on teratogenic effects from topically applied
corticosteroids like Betnovate Cream.
Therefore, topical corticosteroids like Betamethasone Valerate cream
should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the
potential risk to the fetus. Medicines of this class should not be used
extensively in large amounts or for prolonged periods of time in pregnant
patients.
