Evaluation of Enigma (A Level Media Film)

1. EVALUATION FORMEDIA FILM
The aim and brief forthisunitwasto create a shortfilm, between5-10minutesthatengageda
target audience andfitforthe website “Short of the Week”,afilmbroadcastingwebsiteforaspiring
filmmakers. ‘Shortof the week’are lookingfornew talenttowrite,produce andeditshortfilms;it
can be anygenre,aboutany topic,itwas completelyopenandupto me. I have successfully created
a short filmthatI am extremelyhappywith,followingandfittingthe brief well andtothe bestI can.
My filmengageswiththe targetaudience withavariationof clipswithinthe film, includingshort,
actionclipsand slowerclipstoaddtension.Therefore,the audience will neverknow whattoexpect
and therefore ensuringthey wanttosee more andmore. My filmiscertainlysomethingnew and
exciting,asIhaven’tseenafilmthatis a psychological thrillercreatedthis wayandI thinkShortof
the Weekwill be surpriseddue tothe thought-provokingplotthroughoutthe film.
The shots withinmyfilmare infocusand to a high-quality standard.There isplentyof variationof
shotsand I am reallypleasedwithhowtheyall turnedout,especiallycertainshotsatthe lake at the
build-up.

2. The soundlevelsineachshotare good,due to the dialogue beingusedwithamicrophone andthe
othersoundeffectsandmusicbeingplayedoverthe top. Ididn’thave toeditthe original dialogue
as it wasclear, and I am happywiththe volume,andthe musicinthe backgrounddoesn’toverpower
thiseither.
Mise-en-scene hasbeenachieved,forexample agooduse of costume formy maincharacter and
supportingactors/actresses.Iparticularlylikedthe ‘Policeman’outfit,asthislooksprofessional and
the audience knowsexactlywhoitisandwhatcharacter the actor isplaying.
The locationsfittedwellandwere exactlywhatI hadhoped,andI stuck to the recce locationI had
plannedtofilmat.
The props were extremelyrealisticwhichiswhatIhad hopedand helpedaddtothe characterrole.
Strengthsof my filmincludedvariationof shotsandthe quick,sharpeditingsothe audience didn’t
lose interestdue tolongshotsandtherefore ensuredtheywere engaged.
The onlyweaknessinmyfilmwouldbe the puzzlingplotthatthe audience willinitiallyhave toget
theirheadaround,as itcan be complicatedtounderstandinsome respects.However,Ididtry to
make it as clearas possible andIwasassuredby a few of my friendsandcolleaguesthatit was
understandable.
Throughoutthe past yearof planningmyfilmandcreatingmypre-productionelements (suchas
pitchingmyidea,writingmultiplescripts,filmingthe filmandediting) Ihave learntahuge amount.I
have definitelylearnthowtocreate a filmthatis of a longperiodof time,infocus,and filmedand
editedtoa highstandard,whichI am incrediblyhappyIhave managedtoachieve.If Iwere tofilm
againI wouldpossiblymake myself lessstressedasI pressurisedmyself intowantingtofilmall at
once,howeverthisjustisn’tthe case whenthere waslotstofilmwithmultiple locationsand
differentactors/actresseswithdifferentschedules.There isnothingI’dparticularlydodifferentlyif I
editedagain,asI thinkithas beensuccessful.Overall,Iamextremelyhappywithmyfilmandthe
waythat I have achievedthisandithas definitelyincreasedmypassionforfilmingandeditingtoo.
