Theme Of Gender In The Mahabharata
Composed ages ago, The Mahabharata still continues to be retold in various literary, graphic and visual media. In the hands of the postcolonial Indian
English novelist the mythological past takes different shapes. Unlike retellings of previous centuries, these novels do not view the epic as a mere tussle
between dharma and adharma. They re–narrate their past but from a different perspective. They demolish authority, stereotypes, icons and sexist
values. This paper seeks to examine how notions of gender are subverted and notions of victimhood and agency are playfully dealt with, in these
modern retellings of The Mahabharata. This paper will be dealing with two hyper–masculine characters from The Mahabharata, namely Duryodhana
and Bhima. Pushed to the brink of half–existence, both these characters seem to share their frustrations in being misunderstood, half–understood.
Beneath all the masculinity, the massive strength, the oozing machismo, we get two marginalised men waiting to be heard. Our reading of these
novels reveals how rewriting epics gives voice to the subordinated speaker and also analyses the ways in which individuals of this age resist
hegemonic notions of gender and class.

What further distinguish him from others are his incessant baffling questions regarding the social status quo. He questions everything. The
father–figures try hard to quell his rebel spirit, to gag his voice. It is because of him that a lowly sutaputra like Karna or an untouchable nishada like
Ekalavya gets their due recognition. It is none but Duryodhana who can see the worth of these wronged men, men who have always been pushed to the
brink. Whereas in the epic, Ekalavya barely gets mentioned, Anand Neelkantan makes much more room for him in his novel. Following the mother
text, the retelling too, pictures its

The Space Between Us By Thrity Umrigar
Thrity Umrigar's novel The Space Between Us follows the lives of two women, Serabai and Bhima, from completely different classes in India, who
despite their social and economic differences, are in fact alike. Both of these women envisioned a life filled with happiness and fulfillment that were
more than attainable, but fell short due to the circumstances each woman has been through. The Space Between Us takes a look at gender and class,
and how they relate to social and economic factors in modern day India. The Space Between Us follows the lives of Serabai and Bhima. Due to their
positions in society it is at first hard to consider these characters as being very similar. Coming from different social and economic backgrounds, one
would think that these women would have not much in common. Serabai comes from an upper–middle class family, is wealthy, and lives in an upscale
house. Bhima on the other hand, has worked for Serabai for the last twenty years as a maid and lives in the slums. Bhima has had a hard life thus far,
filled with many disappointments. Many of these have stemmed from her husband, who after tragically loosing three of his fingers in a work related
accident, turned to alcohol as a coping mechanism. He eventually abandons her and takes her son with him. Bhima's life becomes more tragic when
both her daughter and son in–law die of AIDS and leave their daughter Maya in Bhima's care. Despite all of these tragedies Bhima does not let these
tragedies break her. She

"Rajkumari...Rajkumari" the maid cried. Draupadi who had been awaiting news of any development in the grand court was alarmed hearing the
trepidation in the voice calling her out. She rushed to the petrified maid who was gasping for breath and firmly placed a hand on her shoulder.
"Tell me" She said.
"Rajkumari, it is YuvrajArjuna" the maid replied. Draupadi's heart sunk, she found herself stepping back, stumbling. After pausing for another breath,
the maid continued, "Rajkumar Yudhisthiralost him as well."
"Look, the son of a blind man is blind as well."
These words that were ensued by a roar of laughter echo loudly in her head. She felt faint. She remembered Duryodhana drenched from head to toe,
his red eyes swearing vengeance. Unsteadily she walked towards the balcony, her hands reaching for the railing. She gloomily looked beyond the
borders, at her former kingdom. Indraprastha was wagered by Yudhisthira first, followed by his brothers her husbands Sahadev, then Nakul, then Bhima
and now, her beloved Arjuna. The man who was known as the greatest archer in the world. The man who won her hand by hitting the eye of a moving
fish up in the heavens while only looking at its reflection through the water placed below him. The man whose Mother unknowingly asked that she be
shared amongst his brothers. The man for whom she accepted five men as husbands. Her gaze went beyond the sandstone houses that

Major Themes Of The Mahabhira's 'Mahbharata'
In order to explain why Yudhisthira is tested and not his four brothers, one needs to understand the major theme of the Mahbharata. In one of the final
scenes of the Mahbharta Yudhisthira proves himself and is rewarded with life after life. The best way to understand the importance of Yudhisthira and
his dog is to first summarize the story. Then the story can be interpreted to show why this story exemplifies the major theme of the rest of the epic.
Despite the complexity and length of the Mahabharta, it seems to have one over–arching theme. This theme is dharma or more specifically fulfilling
you dharmatic duty. I think that dharma includes both the themes of duty and loyalty. Any other presented themes in the Mahabharta seem to relate...

Krishna calls Arjuna to take up his arms to fight and helps him realize the answer to his question of the morality of taking up arms against one's kin.
The thing about Dharma is that it follows your status or your duty in life. This is important to differentiate because there is a difference between
the dharma of a warrior and the dharma of a king. While in a traditional sense, dharma simply is an individual's responsibility to fulfill their duties.
The duties of a warrior and king are vastly different and so dharma can have diverse ramifications to its application on an individual's life. A person's
dharma is what is right for that specific person to do but what is right for them might be an affront to someone else's dharma. A range of factors such
as caste, wealth or heritage combine to determine what constitutes dharma for an individual. A good interpretation of this is that in a general sense
dharma of the Kshatirya is somewhat hypocritical. In a general sense, one's dharmatic duty in society to condemn violence and taking of a life.
However, the specific dharma of the warrior caste demands responsibility for the kingdom and therefore requires as a duty the destruction of enemies.
The explanation of this dilemma is given extensively in the dialogue between Krishna and Arjuna in the Bhagavad Gita. Where Arjuna, ahero, doubts
fighting his cousins before consulting Krishna. Krishna explains that there is a higher destiny for Arjuna and to choose

Krishna and Rama as exemplars of Dharma Essay examples
"Dharma is knowledge prominently directed to the achievement of desired happiness here (i.e. in this life) and hereafter by means of appropriate
actions". (Khan, Benjamin. The Concept of Dharma in Valmiki) Rama and Krishna have been set as perfect exemplars of Dharma in the texts of
Ramayana and Mahabharata respectively. They are considered to be the reincarnations of God Visnu, a Supreme Being, and supposedly lived their
lives according to the Dharmic (or right) way of life. However, the stories of Rama and Krishna in the texts include some of their actions, which are
questionable to the act of Dharma. This may lead one to question Ram and Krishna as true exemplars of Dharma. To understand and fully analyze if

He says that there must be a framework within a society, which is mutually agreed upon by the existing society. Dharma is embedded in that
comprehensive framework which is to be followed by the society without asking any questions.
"It has already been mentioned that wherever conscious living beings congregate some classes are bound to take place, and the first and the most
obvious way of preventing conflicts of interest in a community is for all its members to have the same aims, same interests, same desires, hopes and
fears, in fact the same dispositions...Thus primitive ethics is deontological, a matter of rigid duties, taboos, customs, and commandment, the fixed and
unalterable." Khan then expresses that Dharma unites the various castes in a society. He starts off with the fact that castes will always be formed
within any society. He says that these different castes will have huge differences within the society but Dharma will unite these castes. He says that
Dharma provides everyone with the same aims, desires, hopes and fears but also allows the different castes to have different roles in the society.
Dharma, hence allows the different castes to practice their own duties without causing any conflict amongst them. Without conflict, a sustainable
society can be upheld by following the rules of Dharma. Society succeeds because everyone follows the rules of Dharma. There would have been
chaos everywhere if the society did not follow Dharma.

India 's Priority After Independence
The right to good health is of paramount importance not just in India but also in every corner of the world. It is sad that India, the world's most
populous democracy, can't guarantee that to our citizens especially to the ones who fall below poverty line. On one hand, our country is fast
becoming the hub for medical tourism where people from other countries flock to get good quality and affordable medical treatment. On the other
most of these facilities are simply not available to the natives who should be the first preference looking at the economy of the country (Bajpai, 2014).
Healthcare was never a top priority after independence. The initial focus was on agriculture, infrastructure and military. This led to social sectors like
health and education being neglected. In its recent assessment of the Indian economy, the Organization for Economic Co–operation and Development
(OECD) identified India's poor health outcomes as one of the country's major developmental challenges. India is a laggard in health outcomes not
just by OECD standards, but also by the standards of the developing world. In 2012, India witnessed 253 deaths per 100,000 persons due to
communicable diseases alone, much higher than the global average of 178. India faces a higher disease burden than other emerging economies such
as China, Indonesia, Brazil, Mexico and Sri Lanka. Even poorer neighbors such as Nepal and Bangladesh have a better record in health compared to
India (Gawande, 2012).

Mahabharata Summary
Adi–Parva, First Book: The Origins of the Families
The story opens as Sauti, a storyteller returning from the snake sacrifice of King Janamejaya, approaches several wise men, or rishis, in the forest of
Naimisha. He relates to them the Mahabharata as he has heard it from Vaisampayana, a disciple of the poet Vyasa. Sauti begins by recounting the
death of King Parikshit of the Bharatas at the hands of Takshaka, aNaga, or snake–man. King Janamejaya, Parikshit's son and successor, had held the
snake sacrifice in order to avenge the death of his father, but the ceremony was stopped by the intervention of the learned Naga, Astika. Sauti then
recounts the origins of the Bharatas (also known as the Kurus), a race descended from the great King ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is Karna. The son of Kunti and Surya (the sun god), Karna was born with golden armor attached to his skin. But Kunti, young and unmarried,
set her son adrift on a river to be found and raised by suitable parents. He was adopted by Adhiratha, a charioteer. None of the Pandavas realize that
Karna is their brother, and the armored warrior bests them all in martial feats. Kripa, however, questions Karna's presence, noting that he is not a prince.
Duryodhana is impressed with Karna–and more importantly, he has been looking for a warrior who could defeat Arjuna. Duryodhana and Karna
become friends, but according to traditions of obligation, Karna is indebted to Duryodhana for his kingship and hence owes the prince a great favor.
Led into battle by Drona, the Pandavas attack the nearby kingdom ruled by Drupada, and Drona seizes one half of the king's lands.
The Pandavas return to Hastinapura and Yudhishthira becomes heir to the throne of Kurujangala. Jealous and fearing the loss of his future throne,
Duryodhana hatches a plot to destroy the five and acquire the kingdom for himself. While his cousins and Kunti are visiting the town of Varanavata,
they are to stay in a special house constructed by one of Duryodhana's henchmen which he plans to have burned. Before the Pandavas leave, however,
Vidura warns Yudhishthira of the planned trap. Bhima plans an escape route by digging a tunnel under the house through which they escape. Kunti and

The, A Path Of Righteousness
In the tumultuous aftermath of the first gambling match, BhД«sma declares, "the way of dharma is the highest; not even noble priests can follow it in
this world. And in this world whatever a powerful man regards as dharma is said by others to be dharma, even if it falls within the limits of adharma. I
cannot judge this question... with certainty, because of the subtlety, profundity, and seriousness of the issue." (2.62.15– 17) His words speak to a
persistent source of conflict within parts of The MahДЃbhДЃrata where following dharma, a path of righteousness, is not always an issue of black and
white. Many of the epic's recurring characters, including the virtuous Arjuna, face great challenges maintaining the dharma assigned to Kб№Јatriyas–

Even so, Arjuna, a Kб№Јatriya himself, goes against that principle multiple times when he sets out to kill JarДЃsaб№ѓdha and eventually Duryodhana.
Under some urging and guidance, Arjuna dons the disguise of a Brahmin and travels to Magadha with Kṛṣṇa and Bhīma in order to
challenge King JarДЃsaб№ѓdha. What ensues is a heated exchange as JarДЃsaб№ѓdha points out the wrong in their deceitful entrance and the
Pāṇḍavas counter him by citing his own infractions of dharma, in a justification for their reasons to approach him the way they did: "The
wrong you have done, son of Bб№›hadratha, should come before us, for we practise dharma and are strong in dharma's defence." (2.20.10) Even
though Kṛṣṇa claims shortly afterwards that they "do not pretend to be Brahmins" (2.20.23) as they also seized garlands to go with their
costumes, something that real Brahmins do not wear, the fact that the three of them did not present their true identities from the start is a contrast to his
statement. Due to the knowledge of JarДЃsaб№ѓdha's vow that's "famous throughout the earth" (2.19.31) to always greet Brahmins honourably, their
disguises allowed them to get close enough to the king in a way that their genuine identities probably would not have allowed. As a result, they were
able to execute their mission successfully. Then, Arjuna encroaches on the Kб№Јatriya dharma with dishonesty again

The Characters Of Sita In The Rishi, Valmiki's Ramayana
In the epic, "Ramayana," by the Rishi (sage) Valmiki, Sita is the epitome of what an ideal woman should be, as she is the ideal wife for Rama, the
hero. Sita takes care of her husband and listens to his words, despite situations that would cause others to speak out. As the ideal wife, Sita does not
complain to her husband when he does not trust her, and she sacrifices herself to prove to him the truth. Sita says "'My trials are not ended yet... I
thought with your victory all our troubles were at an end! . . . O Agni, great god of fire, be my witness.' She jumped into the fire" (Narayan). As the
ideal wife for the hero, Rama, Sita displays as a docile individual who lacks a say in her relationship with her husband. She possesses the
characteristics of a feminine individual, which according to Merriam–Webster dictionary is the "qualities or appearance traditionally associated with
women, especially delicacy and prettiness" (Merriam–Webster.com). Sita is a necessary character in the epic needed to display these feminine
characteristics and traits. However, if comparing how important Sita is in the epic, she is secondary to Rama, showing a stark difference where they
stand.
When reading "Ramayana," gender is a significant factor that shapes the personas of the characters. Gender is also a significant factor that indicates
their level of importance in the epic. However, gender is not only a significant factor that defines an individual in epics, stories, myths or fairy tales.
The reality is gender is a prevalent topic in every society, this aspect allows individuals to identify themselves to others. "Gender refers to the socially
and culturally constructed roles, privileges and relations of women, men, girls, and boys" (Tadria). Gender creates a certain standard or expectation for
individuals depending on their gender.
In the epic, "Mahabharata," there is a story that one can use to display the different standards that occur. In the story, "Draupadi," the five Pandavas
brothers: Yudhistra, Bhima, Arjuna, Nakula, and Sahadeva, bring home a boon to their mother. This boon was won by Arjuna at a ceremony, however,
this was no ordinary boon, it was a woman. This was a marriage ceremony for the king's daughter,

Impact Of Gandhi On Women's Rights Movement
INTRODUCTION
We record our homage and deep admiration for the Womanhood of India who in the hour of peril for the motherland forsook the shelter of their homes
and with unfailing courage and endurance stood shoulder to shoulder with their menfolk, in the frontline of India's national army to share with them the

From a Resolution passed on January 26, 1931.

The period from 1917 to 1919 was the most dynamic phase of Sarojini's career. During this time, she campaigned for the Montagu Chelmsford

faithful lieutenant. With great courage she quelled the rioters, sold proscribed literature, addressed frenzied meetings on the carnage at Jallianwala

Love And Vengeance
Portrayal of Love & Vengeance in Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni's
'The Palace of Illusions'
"Is the desire for vengeance stronger than the longing to be loved?"
Love and vengeance are two emotions that have an astounding level of control on us. However which is a stronger driving force remains questionable.
Love without fear and spite – is the most powerful human emotion; and still, it can be easy to slip back into an old way, a jealous rage, a resistance or
belief that one isn't worthy. Though it's a hard feeling to pinpoint, it's presence can be felt in everyone's life. It is a practice like most of one's life

She understood that perhaps they loved her but as a man they loved the notion of honour, of loyalty towards each other and reputation more than her
suffering. Then she decides that she will remember the lesson taught to her and will use it to take revenge, no matter what its price. The questions
Draupadi raises, the things she resists and the emotions which drive her strengths in her discourse all leave us, inquisitively, questioning our reception
and reading of the Mahabharata. The distinctness of Draupadi's narrative stands with the fact that Draupadi's feministic retelling, which is somewhat a
modern rendering fits into the plot of Mahabharata. Draupadi's story is more close to humanised rendering, – her anger, resentment, and suppressed
desire make her one like us. She develops a concern for the role of women which is distinctly modern and contemporary.
The Palace of Illusions is a story of vengeance. Panchaali's father vowed to avenge himself upon the man who stole half his kingdom, and Panchaali
herself later seeks her revenge for the action that shamed her and took away everything she and her husbands had. Vengeance and pride coil together
within Panchaali, giving her no rest. But the big question is would vengeance really give her

Arjun Most Important Characters In The Mahabharata
Arjuna was a very truthful character in the mahabharata he was one of the most important characters as well. He was the son of Kunti and King
Pandu with the energy of Indra. He was known for his steadfastness and single mindedness in pursuing his goals. His name means many things
white/clear or silver in Hindi raj means king in English it means regal and in latin it means ruler. His birth is the most celebrated and it is said that
many gods visited his birth he was born 9 months after krishna was born. After the death of his father he moved to hastinapura where he was raised
with his cousins. He was also very determined for instance when he and his brothers were playing with a ball it fell into a well. While the others had
deemed the ball lost he repeatedly tried to retrieve the object. This is where he met his teacher Dronacharya who taught all of his brothers after helping
Arjuna retrieve the ball. Under his guidance Arjuna became the most powerful archer even better than his own son Ashwathama. Dronacharya once
claimed that Arjuna could shoot the eye of a bird sitting on a tree and was as usual proven correct. However due to Arjuna being Dronacharya's
favorite he was hated by his cousins the Kauravas. He was also trained in religion, science, administration and military arts by Bhishma. He was
married to Draupadi and had 2 sons Abhimanyu and Bhabruhavana. Both of his sons helped in the war effort. He also acquired a powerful bow called

Health And Public Health : India Is Experiencing A Rapid...
Introduction
The term health has many meanings in terms of Indian development as since from the colonial past till the present. Health is the pillar on which life of
people and the well–being of the economy depend. With respect to public health, India is experiencing a rapid epidemiological and demographic
transition whereby it has to deal with an unfinished business of infectious diseases, nutritional deficiencies as well as escalating epidemics of
non–communicable diseases. Such threat to the nation's health and development requires prioritizing of public health policy with the objective of
cost–effective interventions for health promotion, disease prevention and affordable health care.
After years of neglect, public health in India is witnessing some changes in terms of greater financial commitment from the government for public and
primary health care, pressure to meet the Millennium Development Goals, and implementation of national level programs such as Rashtriya Swasthya
Bima Yojana (RSBY) and National Rural Healt Mission, but the effectiveness and outcomes of such changes needs to be analysed.
Literature Review
Healthy population is very important for a developed nation and public health is an important indicator of holistic development yet public health is
often ignored or at least its whole scope is not very often realized as it is often reduced to medical services. Public health services as Monica Das Gupta

Indian Epic
The Mahabharata (composed between 300 BC and 300 AD) has the honor of being the longest epic in world literature, 100,000 2–line stanzas
(although the most recent critical edition edits this down to about 88,000), making it eight times as long as Homer's Iliad and Odyssey together, and
over 3 times as long as the Bible (Chaitanya vii). According to the Narasimhan version, only about 4000 lines relate to the main story; the rest contain
additional myths and teachings. In other words, theMahabharata resembles a long journey with many side roads and detours. It is said that "Whatever

The Characterisation Of Duryodhana
Characterisation of Duryodhana in Bhasa's play Urubhanga
Bhasa starts his play Urubhanga with the picturisation of samandhapanjaka war in the eyes of warriers. There after the war of two equal fighters Bhima
and Duryodhana. In between the explanations of their physical features Bhima fall down with the beat of Duryodhana with his mace. Duryodhana
advised him to come out of fear. When their war restart Krishna advised Bhima to hit Duryodhana in his thigh. It is quite different from current phrases.
This incident leads to express the intensity of inner feeling thereafter. Balarama felt angry to Beema for not giving any importance to the norms and
rules of mace. He introduced the cheated Duryodhana. Duryodhana's repentance is revealed through his words that Beema (pandavas) didn't threaten
him. Duryodhana disagree to the words of Balarama that he will sent the pandavas who killed Duryodhana to heaven along with him in his journey to
there (32). There we found the helplessness, merciful Duryodhana. Duryodhana's these feeling revealed through his word to Balarama. He asked him
that Kauravas were killed, i too in this instance, then what is the relevance of war? According to Duryodhana, this is not a victory to pandavas because
the vigor Beema killed him through betrayal. Through this Bhasa tried to force viewers to support Duryodhana. ... Show more content on

In The TГЎin and the MahДЃbhДЃrata, brothers slaughter and mourn over brothers, parents are separated from their children, and husbands and
wives quarrel and grow apart; the ideals of these epics seem to suggest that avoiding desires and violence will resolve such familial conflict. However,
it is difficult to generalize from these dramatic epics since they do not necessarily resolve conflicts within families or settle disputes realistically.
Nonetheless, the texts offer explanations as to why dysfunctional relationships exist, in that The TГЎin points to materialistic desires as the root causes
of familial disputes, while the MahДЃbhДЃrata focuses on the conflicts between relative and absolute dharmas in forcing individuals to turn against one

Regardless of all her material possessions and haughtiness, she suddenly feels poor, due to her unquenchable thirst for more wealth and power.
Although Medb already has much wealth, her notion of possessing power will no longer be satisfied if she is not equally as affluent as her husband; her
focus is not upon the bull itself, since she initially only wants to borrow it for one year–rather, she desires to have control and assert herself as an equal
to her husband, symbolically through possession of the bull. She is so hinged upon this desire that she is overconfident that she will own the bull,
stating "it was well known it would be taken by force if it wasn't given freely...taken it will be," (The TГЎin 58). Her nonchalance and her
determination mark her as a fierce, independent woman, which explains why her relationship with Ailill involves a power struggle, since both of them

Memorable Villainy In Othello
The concept of villain brings to one's mind as one who is opposite to the hero, creating difficulties and hurdles for the latter to overcome. A literary
villain, on the other hand, is one who is unchanging with regards to his goals unless an overwhelming force, physical or psychological compels him to
do so. In subtle villainy, the villain is cunning, crafty, intellectual, malicious and harmful. Rather than merely waiting for a tragedy to happen, subtle
villains would have developed a clear plan based on a definite objective in mind and would ensure the progress of their plans by devising appropriate
strategies, ensuring proper timing, evaluating continuously at various stages and monitoring its meticulous implementation with enough courage,
patience and perseverance. Iago from the famous classic Othello, the Moor of Venice written by William Shakespeare and Sakuni, from the epic

Achilles and Duryodhana Analysis
A quick comparison between the characters Achilles in the Iliad and Duryodhana in the Mahabharata suggests that they are extremely similar. Both
characters are hard–headed, full of pride, and their eventual demises both occur because of a certain weakness in their invulnerability related to their
mothers' oversight. At closer glance, one notices that while they share many traits, the role Achilles plays is much different from Duryodhana's. An
examination of each character's motives and the context of the story they are placed in reveals that Duryodhana is clearly the antagonist in the
Mahabharata while Achilles appears to be the tragically flawed hero of the Iliad. Some of the similarities between the two characters are obvious.
Both come from nobility. Achilles is a Myrmidon prince while Duryodhana is a Kauravan prince. Both princes are also considered to be exceptional
warriors, and they are frequently complimented on their amazing fighting abilities. Achilles is described as a "frenzied god of battle" while
Duryodhana is also frequently praised in his great skill with weapons such as his mace (Homer 519).
While they may be great warriors, the two men often let their stubbornness and pride take rein of their emotions. When King Agamemnon snatches
Briseis, a woman Achilles had captured from the town of Lyrnessus, Achilles swears that he will never again fight under Agamemnon nor "do

The Political Propoganda Of The Mahabharata
Sandesh Pokharel The Political Propoganda of The Mahabharata The Mahabharata is an epic created around the time of fourth century BCE to
fourth century CE by Krsna Dvaipayana. The story follows a generation of family in "northen India" (Dvaipayana, 1235). The main part of the
story begins with Dhrtarastra, Pandu, and Vidura. Dhrtarashtra is denied his kingship for being blind, therefore the kingdom of Hastinapur falls
into the hands of Pandu (1236). However, Pandu is cursed to die if he touches any of his two wives with lust after killing a sage and his wife while
mating in the form of deer (1242). For her husband's desire to have children, Kunti invokes a mantra she learned when she was young and
conceives three babies with gods and gifts the power to Madri, the second wife of Pandu, to bear twins (1242). Together the brothers are called
Pandavas. After Pandu's death and Dhrtarastra's ascension to the throne, the matter of kingship goes into a huge conflict, since Gandhari, wife of
Dhrtarastra, bears hundred sons and a daughter (1240). The children of Dhrtarastra are called Kauravas. Having legitimacy to the throne on both
sides of the family, the quarrel for power ends with a war at the end of the book which culminates in destruction of families on both sides (1238).
Through its epic scale of narrative, the book tries to answer fundamental questions about war, rule, and human life. However, the subtle presence of
political propaganda in the book hampers its perfection as a

While he was in the heavens he displeased Urvashi, the heavenly nymph which made her very angry. She cursed him out of anger to turn into a
eunuch for the thirteenth year of his exile. This later turned out to be very useful for him as it helped him stay in disguise. Apart from archery, he also
excelled in the arts of dancing, singing and acting which enormously helped the Pandavas when they had to stay in the court of Virat in total disguise
as a part of their agreement with the Kauravas in the thirteenth year of their exile. Since they were in the thirteenth year of their exile Arjuna was now a
eunuch and acted as a dance teacher for the royal family, especially Uttara, the daughter of king Virat. At the end of the one year stay, he helped
king Virat by fighting a battle with the Kauravas who invaded his kingdom. After realizing that the five people who working in his court were
indeed Pandavas in disguise, king Virat offered to marry his daughter to Abhimanyu the son of Arjuna in return for the services done by the brothers,
a marriage that proved important in the time after the war period as their son was the last of the Pandavas. Due to his loyalty to Krishna in the war he
received the divine knowledge of the Bhagavad gita which gave him more clarity of the world and his life. Arjuna had the fortune of receiving the
divine knowledge of the Bhagavad–Gita. In the Mahabharata war he played a very important role

Portrayal Of Female Character In Sita And Jaya
Portrayal of female character by Devdutt Pattanaik in his book 'Sita' and 'Jaya'
In the Hindu Mythology some women are portrayed as the role model for all the women. Sita, Savitri, Draupadi, Ahalya and Arundhati are the five
women that are considered to be the role model. The women in the Hindu–Indian tradition are asked to obey their husbands no matter what they feel.
This tradition imprints this in the minds and hearts of the women. If women do not follow this tradition then they will have to face the problems that
their role models portrayed in the Epics have faced. Those five women are put on the pedestals of pride and honour. Sita and Draupadi are the main
celebrities of Hindu Mythology. Both of them had a Supernatural birth. Sita ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She called Duryodhana as the blind son of the blind man infront of everyone. In order to take revenge he dragged and disrobed Draupadi in front of
the whole court.
Sita showed full confidence and trust in her husband Ram and kept waiting for him to rescue her from Ravana. On the other hand Draupadi decided to
be the reason of the destruction of the clan of the Kauravas. When Ram rescued Sita from the demon King Ravana he clearly stated that he has saved
her only because of the honour of his family and question were raised on the chastity of Sita. Draupadi faced many accusations as she was married to
five men at the same time. Sita was abounded and lived alone and also raised her children alone without any support from their father. Draupadi lived
with all her five husbands but unfortunately lost all her sons in the battle.
Draupadi and Sita are very strong characters and they stood against all the odds of the society. They faced many challenges in their lives yet they are
always criticised by the people of the society. Sita suffered everything when she was staying in Lanka as she stood against the demon Ravana and
never accepted anything from anyone in Lanka as she was waiting for her husband Lord Ram to come and rescue her from Ravana.
Draupadi suffered all alone and nobody helped her when she was being dragged by Duryodhana to the court. When she was humiliated in front of the
court everyone witnessed this cruel act but no

Role Of Lord Krishna In Mahabharata
ROLE OF KRISHNA IN MAHABHARATA: A HERO OR A VILLIAN
"I'm the scruples in the heart of all living beings
I 'm their start, their being, their conclusion
I'm the wits of the senses,
I'm the beaming sun amongst lights
I'm the song in revered lore,
I'm the sovereign of deities
I'm the cleric of great seers..."
Lord Krishna one of the most powerful incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Lord Krishna plays a very vital role in the Hinduism thoughts and philosophies,
influencing not only the religion, philosophy and its spirituality but also the literature, culture and heritage. From his initial days as a little kid in
Gokul, to an adolescent in Mathura and later as a King of Dwarka, Krishna is a hero and will always make me worship him in appreciation but when
it comes to his role in Mahabharata, the feelings however are not same.
Were his deeds right or not is a big question. Were all the decisions taken by him right? The way he behaved around draupadi was it right? Was his
manipulating Arjun right? So many questions arises when we talk about his role in Mahabharata. He was the master mind behind Mahabharata. He

Mamallapuram : The Five Rathas And The Shore Temple
Mamallapuram, also called Mahabalipuram, (Mamalla meaning "great warrior") is a famous town in India that's well–known for its monuments and
temple created by the Pallava dynasty during the 7th and 8th century. The five Rathas and the Shore Temple I will be writing about in this essay
covers the history and materials that were used to build them. They are also labeled as rock–cut temples that were hallowed out of mountains carved
out of hard stone and are more connected to sculptures rather than conventional buildings constructed with blocks of polished stone. They are carved in
the "quasi–monolithic temple form." The Pancha Rathas are aligned in the direction of north to south and share a standard plinth. The five Rathas
except the Arjuna Ratha are a collection of five small stone temples accompanied by a life–size statue of a bull, an elephant, and a lion. Four of the
Rathas are carved out of a large, single piece of rock. Since each Ratha wasn't finished, they were not able to be used as a worship space. All of the
Ratha (monolithic) temples are three stories high with a base floor plan shaped like a square. The shallow recesses of the interior walls of the Rathas
have carved images of gods and demi–gods. The first temple I will be talking about is the Draupadi Ratha.
The dwelling of the goddess at Mamallapuram dedicated to Shiva's consort, Durga. The smallest of the Mamallapuram Rathas, known as the Draupadi
Ratha, is dedicated to the goddess Durga. The Draupadi Ratha

Vayu, The God of Wind
Although there are many Hindu gods, there is only one god known as the ruler of the sky. The Hindu God Vayu, the god of wind, spirits of the sky, is
said to be very handsome and strong. He is generally worshipped by Hindu's every day.
In Vedic Times, Emperor Vayu was known as one of the Hindu Triad. In Vedic beliefs, most of the gods and goddesses represented nature. Which
meant that Vayu was one of the three main gods in Hindu belief. InHinduism, the wind symbolized freedom, fate, illness and bad spirits. Since Vayu
was known as the emperor of the sky, people believed that a person would feel sick because of their "evil spirt," which they thought to be punishment
by Lord Vayu. There were a few temples dedicated to emperor Vayu as Mukhyapana, the most significant one located at Udupi in Karnataka. He was
also known to be the father of Bhima and Hanuman.
The ruler of the skies was very important because everyone thought that by praying to the Vayu they would be assisted. The lord of "breath" was
influential because he was thought to be the one who controlled the wind. If he was ever disrespected or irritated, he would stop the breeze from the
universe. Also known as the king of Gandarvas, meaning he was the lord of the atmosphere and sky, Vayu played a very significant role inHindu
Mythology. Although there are over thirty million gods that are worshipped by Hindus, Lord Vayu was

##hagavad Gita As Duty And Virtue Ethics In Bina Gupta's...
What makes a person virtuous? What is virtue ethics and how does one display virtue ethics? These questions have been asked and debated over and
over again, each time resulting in different answers. Bina Gupta attempts to answer this question of the ages in his article Bhagavad Gita as Duty and
Virtue Ethics by declaring, "So, who is a virtuous person? A virtuous person knows what she is doing; chooses to act for herself; and acts through an
expression of a stable and mature character." In The Mahabharata translated and abridged by R.K. Narayan, there are many of 'the cast of thousands'
that grow in their character and display virtue ethics. Each of these characters develops through trial and situations they are thrust into or unwisely place
themselves in. There is one character that stands out and clearly displays virtue ethics throughout the entirety of the narrative. This character is
Draupadi, the daughter of Drupada and wife to the Pandava brothers. Draupadi has a firm sense of her beliefs, acts for herself, upholds the values of
the culture, and holds others to the same standard of virtuous behavior. Draupadi has a strong sense of what she believes are ethical decisions and
attitudes, and she lets these beliefs guide her actions. Dhritarashtra, the king of Hastinapur, said of Draupadi "'Daughter, even in this trial you have
stood undaunted holding on to virtue.'" (65)
Firstly, Draupadi is a strong character, who knows what she is doing and chooses to act for herself.

Essay On Lord Krishna
Description
Lord Krishna is one of the most popular Gods in Hinduism. Krishna is considered the supreme deity, worshipped across many traditions of Hinduism
in a variety of different perspectives. Krishna is recognized as the eighth incarnation (avatar) of Lord Vishnu, and one and the same as Lord Vishnu,
one of the trimurti and as the supreme god in his own right. Krishna is the principal protagonist with Arjuna in the Bhagavad Gita also known as the
Song of God, which depicts the conversation between the Royal Prince Arjuna and Krishna during the great battle of Kureksetra 5000 years ago
where Arjuna discovers that Krishna is God and then comprehends his nature and will for him and for mankind. In present age Krishna is one of the
most widely revered and most popular of all Indian divinities.
Each incarnation of Lord Vishnu on the Earth is with a purpose and to accomplish some definite tasks. Lord Krishna came to the Earth to kill king
Kansa and to relieve the people of Braj from his torture and tyranny. Later Krishna participated in the events of the Mahabharata and Lord Krishna's
participation had profound effect on the Mahabharata war and its consequences.

The Role Of Women In The Mahabharata
THE ROLE OF WOMEN IN THE MAHABHARATA The role of women in the Mahabharata makes an interesting and fascinating study providing
insight into the strengths and weaknesses of their character. In the Mahabharata, four women play pivotal role in the course of events. The men play
dice and wage wars in Mahabharata, as anywhere else; but it is the women who hold power and influence. It is the women who direct the course of
events and unconsciously determine the fate of men and their generations to follow. The women are the true leaders of the Epic. These women
displayed that the truly powerful do not cling to power. They knew when and how to wield it but also, even more important, to when not to use it.

He said that victory had indeed accrued to the righteous as the Pandavas had fought for a righteous cause. Gandhari, however, could not forgive Lord
Krishna whom she held responsible for all the tragic events. She cursed him saying that the whole of his clan of Yadavas would die fighting one

father. Her father gave her in adoption to his brother–inlaw, King Kuntibhoja, and hence she was called Kunti. Her name at birth was Pritha, and
therefore, one of the names of her son, Arjuna, is Partha. A large part of Kunti's character has already been considered earlier when studying Karna in
the Mahabharata: how she invoked the Sun God, abandoned the newborn out of a sense of shame because she was not married, how she met Karna
again on the eve of the battle and revealed to him for the first time his divine birth. Kunti accompanied her sons during their first period of exile,

Dharma in the Mahabharta Essays
Dharma in the Mahabharta
The concept of dharma is the most central and core concept of Hindu philosophy, "all the other principles and values flow from the beautiful fountain
of Dharma" (Srinivasan n.d., 1). Consequently, the Hindu scriptures present many examples of its importance in a variety of ways. The two epics
Mahabharata and Ramayana are particularly interesting in their presentation of dharma.
Dharma is Sanskrit word with many different connotations that are mostly of ethical nature. Thus far, there has not been a parallel word found for it in
English or any language that truly signifies the essence of it. It comes from the root word, dhr, which literally means to uphold, sustain, and maintain a
thing in its being. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The concept of dharma is very broad and is very difficult to grasp because there is no clear–cut definition of dharma that captures the essence of it.
However, one can try to see how the works like the Mahabharata approach the concept. The epic mainly deals with the loss and reestablishment of
dharma on Earth. "For whensoever Dharma declines and Adharma uprises, the Bhagavan (god) creates himself to guard the good and to destroy the
wicked; to establish the Dharma firmly, he comes into being again and again" (Sukthankar 1998, 79). In the Mahabharata, the story goes that
Earth–burdened by the tyranny of demonic kings then ruling– requests Visnu to relieve her burden; and Visnu decides to do so by, along with other
heavenly beings: gods, rsis, gandharvas, kinnaras and so on, taking birth among the Yadavas. A war is fought with purpose of ending the tyranny of the
demonic kings and restoring dharma on decline due to the tyranny, also, in turn relieving Earth's burden. However, all this does not take place with
such simplicity. The Mahabharata War, as one remembers, was fought between cousins, the Kauravas and the Pandavas. Throughout history many wars
between cousins have taken place, then what makes the Mahabharata War so special to gain such recognition. As it turns out, " what gives this trivial
tale of petty

The Historical Context of The Bhagavad Gita and Its Relation to Indian Religious Doctrines
The Bhagavad Gita is perhaps the most famous, and definitely the most widely–read, ethical text of ancient India. As an episode in India's great epic,
the Mahabharata, The Bhagavad Gita now ranks as one of the three principal texts that define and capture the essence of Hinduism; the other two being
the Upanishads and the Brahma Sutras. Though this work contains much theology, its kernel is ethical and its teaching is set in the context of an
ethical problem. The teaching of The Bhagavad Gita is summed up in the maxim "your business is with the deed and not with the result." When Arjuna,
the third son of king Pandu (dynasty name: Pandavas) is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The conflict between the Pandavas and the Kauravas brewed gradually when the Kauravas refused to return the kingdom to the Panadavas and honor
the agreement after the fourteen–year exile, and escalated to a full scale war when the Kauravas refused to even grant Yudhisthir's reduced demand
for a few villages instead of the entire kingdom. As the battle is about to begin, Arjuna, himself an acclaimed warrior, wonders how he could kill his
own blood relatives with whom he had grown up as a child. He puts the battle on hold and begins a conversation with Krishna, one of the ten but most
important incarnations of the Universal Hindu God, Vishnu. The Bhagavad Gita begins here and ends with Krishna convincing Arjuna that in the
grand scheme of things, he is only a pawn. The best he could do is do his duty and not question God's will. It was his duty to fight. In convincing
Arjuna, the Lord Krishna provides a philosophy of life and restores Arjuna's nerve to begin the battle –– a battle that had been stalled because the
protagonist had lost his nerve and needed time to reexamine his moral values.
Even though The Bhagavad Gita (hereafter referred to as the Gita) is one of the three principal texts that define the essence of Hinduism, and since all
over the world Hindus chant from the Gita during most of their religious ceremonies, strictly speaking the Gita is not one of the Hindu scriptures. In
light

Comparing The Epics And The Epic Heroes
Comparison of the Epics In every epic, there are common themes that present themselves throughout the story, such as war. The epics Gilgamesh,
Beowulf, and The Mahabharata, share similar characteristics in terms of their strength, values, and journeys. In each of the epics that will be
discussed, there is the occurrence of fighting for honor and to have a legacy. The epic heroes follow many of the guidelines that Joseph Campbell has
written in his book Hero with a Thousand Faces. Joseph Campbell believed that the stages of a hero were to have a call to adventure, he is
introduced in his ordinary world, he is hesitant and may not want to fulfill his mission, the person is encouraged by someone old and wise, the
person is committed to their journey, there are tests and people to help the hero, the hero faces his last, challenging quest, he potentially faces
death, the hero survives his journey and is rewarded in some way, he has a journey back to his home and could face more danger, the hero is
transformed by his experience, and the hero brings back treasures. Gilgamesh shows the characteristics of hero according to Joseph Campbell because
he faces many challenging quests in particular his most dangerous is going to the king and queen of (idk) (where) to find the secret of immortality,
Gilgamesh survives his journey back from (where), Gilgamesh is transformed because he becomes less shellfish, on the journey home he could have
possibly been in danger because of the deadly

Theme Of Gender In The Mahabharata

  • 1. Theme Of Gender In The Mahabharata Composed ages ago, The Mahabharata still continues to be retold in various literary, graphic and visual media. In the hands of the postcolonial Indian English novelist the mythological past takes different shapes. Unlike retellings of previous centuries, these novels do not view the epic as a mere tussle between dharma and adharma. They re–narrate their past but from a different perspective. They demolish authority, stereotypes, icons and sexist values. This paper seeks to examine how notions of gender are subverted and notions of victimhood and agency are playfully dealt with, in these modern retellings of The Mahabharata. This paper will be dealing with two hyper–masculine characters from The Mahabharata, namely Duryodhana and Bhima. Pushed to the brink of half–existence, both these characters seem to share their frustrations in being misunderstood, half–understood. Beneath all the masculinity, the massive strength, the oozing machismo, we get two marginalised men waiting to be heard. Our reading of these novels reveals how rewriting epics gives voice to the subordinated speaker and also analyses the ways in which individuals of this age resist hegemonic notions of gender and class. Keywords: Agency, Mythology, Retelling, Hyper–masculinity, Marginalisation ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... What further distinguish him from others are his incessant baffling questions regarding the social status quo. He questions everything. The father–figures try hard to quell his rebel spirit, to gag his voice. It is because of him that a lowly sutaputra like Karna or an untouchable nishada like Ekalavya gets their due recognition. It is none but Duryodhana who can see the worth of these wronged men, men who have always been pushed to the brink. Whereas in the epic, Ekalavya barely gets mentioned, Anand Neelkantan makes much more room for him in his novel. Following the mother text, the retelling too, pictures its ... • 2. The Space Between Us By Thrity Umrigar Thrity Umrigar's novel The Space Between Us follows the lives of two women, Serabai and Bhima, from completely different classes in India, who despite their social and economic differences, are in fact alike. Both of these women envisioned a life filled with happiness and fulfillment that were more than attainable, but fell short due to the circumstances each woman has been through. The Space Between Us takes a look at gender and class, and how they relate to social and economic factors in modern day India. The Space Between Us follows the lives of Serabai and Bhima. Due to their positions in society it is at first hard to consider these characters as being very similar. Coming from different social and economic backgrounds, one would think that these women would have not much in common. Serabai comes from an upper–middle class family, is wealthy, and lives in an upscale house. Bhima on the other hand, has worked for Serabai for the last twenty years as a maid and lives in the slums. Bhima has had a hard life thus far, filled with many disappointments. Many of these have stemmed from her husband, who after tragically loosing three of his fingers in a work related accident, turned to alcohol as a coping mechanism. He eventually abandons her and takes her son with him. Bhima's life becomes more tragic when both her daughter and son in–law die of AIDS and leave their daughter Maya in Bhima's care. Despite all of these tragedies Bhima does not let these tragedies break her. She ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Analysis Of The Story ' Princess Of Panchal ' Lobsang Diki Carolyn Ferrell Stories and Transformations Princess of Panchal "Rajkumari...Rajkumari" the maid cried. Draupadi who had been awaiting news of any development in the grand court was alarmed hearing the trepidation in the voice calling her out. She rushed to the petrified maid who was gasping for breath and firmly placed a hand on her shoulder. "Tell me" She said. "Rajkumari, it is YuvrajArjuna" the maid replied. Draupadi's heart sunk, she found herself stepping back, stumbling. After pausing for another breath, the maid continued, "Rajkumar Yudhisthiralost him as well." "Look, the son of a blind man is blind as well." These words that were ensued by a roar of laughter echo loudly in her head. She felt faint. She remembered Duryodhana drenched from head to toe, his red eyes swearing vengeance. Unsteadily she walked towards the balcony, her hands reaching for the railing. She gloomily looked beyond the borders, at her former kingdom. Indraprastha was wagered by Yudhisthira first, followed by his brothers her husbands Sahadev, then Nakul, then Bhima and now, her beloved Arjuna. The man who was known as the greatest archer in the world. The man who won her hand by hitting the eye of a moving fish up in the heavens while only looking at its reflection through the water placed below him. The man whose Mother unknowingly asked that she be shared amongst his brothers. The man for whom she accepted five men as husbands. Her gaze went beyond the sandstone houses that ... • 4. Major Themes Of The Mahabhira's 'Mahbharata' In order to explain why Yudhisthira is tested and not his four brothers, one needs to understand the major theme of the Mahbharata. In one of the final scenes of the Mahbharta Yudhisthira proves himself and is rewarded with life after life. The best way to understand the importance of Yudhisthira and his dog is to first summarize the story. Then the story can be interpreted to show why this story exemplifies the major theme of the rest of the epic. Despite the complexity and length of the Mahabharta, it seems to have one over–arching theme. This theme is dharma or more specifically fulfilling you dharmatic duty. I think that dharma includes both the themes of duty and loyalty. Any other presented themes in the Mahabharta seem to relate... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Krishna calls Arjuna to take up his arms to fight and helps him realize the answer to his question of the morality of taking up arms against one's kin. The thing about Dharma is that it follows your status or your duty in life. This is important to differentiate because there is a difference between the dharma of a warrior and the dharma of a king. While in a traditional sense, dharma simply is an individual's responsibility to fulfill their duties. The duties of a warrior and king are vastly different and so dharma can have diverse ramifications to its application on an individual's life. A person's dharma is what is right for that specific person to do but what is right for them might be an affront to someone else's dharma. A range of factors such as caste, wealth or heritage combine to determine what constitutes dharma for an individual. A good interpretation of this is that in a general sense dharma of the Kshatirya is somewhat hypocritical. Where Arjuna, ahero, doubts fighting his cousins before consulting Krishna. Krishna explains that there is a higher destiny for Arjuna and to choose ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Krishna and Rama as exemplars of Dharma Essay examples "Dharma is knowledge prominently directed to the achievement of desired happiness here (i.e. in this life) and hereafter by means of appropriate actions". (Khan, Benjamin. The Concept of Dharma in Valmiki) Rama and Krishna have been set as perfect exemplars of Dharma in the texts of Ramayana and Mahabharata respectively. They are considered to be the reincarnations of God Visnu, a Supreme Being, and supposedly lived their lives according to the Dharmic (or right) way of life. However, the stories of Rama and Krishna in the texts include some of their actions, which are questionable to the act of Dharma. This may lead one to question Ram and Krishna as true exemplars of Dharma. To understand and fully analyze if the roles of Rama and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He says that there must be a framework within a society, which is mutually agreed upon by the existing society. Dharma is embedded in that comprehensive framework which is to be followed by the society without asking any questions. "It has already been mentioned that wherever conscious living beings congregate some classes are bound to take place, and the first and the most obvious way of preventing conflicts of interest in a community is for all its members to have the same aims, same interests, same desires, hopes and fears, in fact the same dispositions...Thus primitive ethics is deontological, a matter of rigid duties, taboos, customs, and commandment, the fixed and unalterable." Khan then expresses that Dharma unites the various castes in a society. He starts off with the fact that castes will always be formed within any society. He says that these different castes will have huge differences within the society but Dharma will unite these castes. He says that Dharma provides everyone with the same aims, desires, hopes and fears but also allows the different castes to have different roles in the society. Dharma, hence allows the different castes to practice their own duties without causing any conflict amongst them. Without conflict, a sustainable society can be upheld by following the rules of Dharma. Society succeeds because everyone follows the rules of Dharma. There would have been chaos everywhere if the society did not follow Dharma. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. India 's Priority After Independence The right to good health is of paramount importance not just in India but also in every corner of the world. It is sad that India, the world's most populous democracy, can't guarantee that to our citizens especially to the ones who fall below poverty line. On one hand, our country is fast becoming the hub for medical tourism where people from other countries flock to get good quality and affordable medical treatment. On the other most of these facilities are simply not available to the natives who should be the first preference looking at the economy of the country (Bajpai, 2014). Healthcare was never a top priority after independence. The initial focus was on agriculture, infrastructure and military. This led to social sectors like health and education being neglected. In its recent assessment of the Indian economy, the Organization for Economic Co–operation and Development (OECD) identified India's poor health outcomes as one of the country's major developmental challenges. India is a laggard in health outcomes not just by OECD standards, but also by the standards of the developing world. In 2012, India witnessed 253 deaths per 100,000 persons due to communicable diseases alone, much higher than the global average of 178. India faces a higher disease burden than other emerging economies such as China, Indonesia, Brazil, Mexico and Sri Lanka. Even poorer neighbors such as Nepal and Bangladesh have a better record in health compared to India (Gawande, 2012). HISTORY In ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Mahabharata Summary Adi–Parva, First Book: The Origins of the Families The story opens as Sauti, a storyteller returning from the snake sacrifice of King Janamejaya, approaches several wise men, or rishis, in the forest of Naimisha. He relates to them the Mahabharata as he has heard it from Vaisampayana, a disciple of the poet Vyasa. Sauti begins by recounting the death of King Parikshit of the Bharatas at the hands of Takshaka, aNaga, or snake–man. King Janamejaya, Parikshit's son and successor, had held the snake sacrifice in order to avenge the death of his father, but the ceremony was stopped by the intervention of the learned Naga, Astika. The son of Kunti and Surya (the sun god), Karna was born with golden armor attached to his skin. But Kunti, young and unmarried, set her son adrift on a river to be found and raised by suitable parents. He was adopted by Adhiratha, a charioteer. None of the Pandavas realize that Karna is their brother, and the armored warrior bests them all in martial feats. Kripa, however, questions Karna's presence, noting that he is not a prince. Duryodhana is impressed with Karna–and more importantly, he has been looking for a warrior who could defeat Arjuna. Duryodhana and Karna become friends, but according to traditions of obligation, Karna is indebted to Duryodhana for his kingship and hence owes the prince a great favor. Led into battle by Drona, the Pandavas attack the nearby kingdom ruled by Drupada, and Drona seizes one half of the king's lands. The Pandavas return to Hastinapura and Yudhishthira becomes heir to the throne of Kurujangala. Jealous and fearing the loss of his future throne, Duryodhana hatches a plot to destroy the five and acquire the kingdom for himself. While his cousins and Kunti are visiting the town of Varanavata, they are to stay in a special house constructed by one of Duryodhana's henchmen which he plans to have burned. Before the Pandavas leave, however, Vidura warns Yudhishthira of the planned trap. Bhima plans an escape route by digging a tunnel under the house through which they escape. Kunti and ... • 8. The, A Path Of Righteousness In the tumultuous aftermath of the first gambling match, BhД«sma declares, "the way of dharma is the highest; not even noble priests can follow it in this world. And in this world whatever a powerful man regards as dharma is said by others to be dharma, even if it falls within the limits of adharma. I cannot judge this question... with certainty, because of the subtlety, profundity, and seriousness of the issue." (2.62.15– 17) His words speak to a persistent source of conflict within parts of The MahДЃbhДЃrata where following dharma, a path of righteousness, is not always an issue of black and white. Many of the epic's recurring characters, including the virtuous Arjuna, face great challenges maintaining the dharma assigned to Kб№Јatriyas– which... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even so, Arjuna, a Kб№Јatriya himself, goes against that principle multiple times when he sets out to kill JarДЃsaб№ѓdha and eventually Duryodhana. Under some urging and guidance, Arjuna dons the disguise of a Brahmin and travels to Magadha with Kṛṣṇa and BhД«ma in order to challenge King JarДЃsaб№ѓdha. What ensues is a heated exchange as JarДЃsaб№ѓdha points out the wrong in their deceitful entrance and the Pāṇḍavas counter him by citing his own infractions of dharma, in a justification for their reasons to approach him the way they did: "The wrong you have done, son of Bб№›hadratha, should come before us, for we practise dharma and are strong in dharma's defence." (2.20.10) Even though Kṛṣṇa claims shortly afterwards that they "do not pretend to be Brahmins" (2.20.23) as they also seized garlands to go with their costumes, something that real Brahmins do not wear, the fact that the three of them did not present their true identities from the start is a contrast to his statement. Due to the knowledge of JarДЃsaб№ѓdha's vow that's "famous throughout the earth" (2.19.31) to always greet Brahmins honourably, their disguises allowed them to get close enough to the king in a way that their genuine identities probably would not have allowed. As a result, they were able to execute their mission successfully. Then, Arjuna encroaches on the Kб№Јatriya dharma with dishonesty again ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. The Characters Of Sita In The Rishi, Valmiki's Ramayana In the epic, "Ramayana," by the Rishi (sage) Valmiki, Sita is the epitome of what an ideal woman should be, as she is the ideal wife for Rama, the hero. Sita takes care of her husband and listens to his words, despite situations that would cause others to speak out. As the ideal wife, Sita does not complain to her husband when he does not trust her, and she sacrifices herself to prove to him the truth. Sita says "'My trials are not ended yet... I thought with your victory all our troubles were at an end! . . . O Agni, great god of fire, be my witness.' She jumped into the fire" (Narayan). As the ideal wife for the hero, Rama, Sita displays as a docile individual who lacks a say in her relationship with her husband. She possesses the characteristics of a feminine individual, which according to Merriam–Webster dictionary is the "qualities or appearance traditionally associated with women, especially delicacy and prettiness" (Merriam–Webster.com). Sita is a necessary character in the epic needed to display these feminine characteristics and traits. However, if comparing how important Sita is in the epic, she is secondary to Rama, showing a stark difference where they stand. When reading "Ramayana," gender is a significant factor that shapes the personas of the characters. Gender is also a significant factor that indicates their level of importance in the epic. However, gender is not only a significant factor that defines an individual in epics, stories, myths or fairy tales. The reality is gender is a prevalent topic in every society, this aspect allows individuals to identify themselves to others. "Gender refers to the socially and culturally constructed roles, privileges and relations of women, men, girls, and boys" (Tadria). Gender creates a certain standard or expectation for individuals depending on their gender. In the epic, "Mahabharata," there is a story that one can use to display the different standards that occur. In the story, "Draupadi," the five Pandavas brothers: Yudhistra, Bhima, Arjuna, Nakula, and Sahadeva, bring home a boon to their mother. This boon was won by Arjuna at a ceremony, however, this was no ordinary boon, it was a woman. This was a marriage ceremony for the king's daughter, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Impact Of Gandhi On Women's Rights Movement INTRODUCTION We record our homage and deep admiration for the Womanhood of India who in the hour of peril for the motherland forsook the shelter of their homes and with unfailing courage and endurance stood shoulder to shoulder with their menfolk, in the frontline of India's national army to share with them the sacrifices and triumphs of the struggle". From a Resolution passed on January 26, 1931. When the history of India's fight for Independence comes to be written, the sacrifice made by the women of India will occupy the foremost place – Mahatma GandhiJawaharlal Nehru had remarked, when most of the men–folk were in prison then a remarkable thing happened. When Gandhi launched the Civil Disobedience Movement ,she proved a faithful lieutenant. With great courage she quelled the rioters, sold proscribed literature, addressed frenzied meetings on the carnage at Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar. In 1930 when Mahatma Gandhi chose her to lead the Salt Satyagraha the stories of her courage became legion. After Gandhi's arrest she had prepared 2,000 volunteers under the scorching sun to raid the Dahrsana Salt Works, while the police faced them half a mile up the road with rifle, lathis (canes) are steel tipped clubs. The volunteers wildly cheered when she shook off the arm of the British police officer who came to arrest her and marched proudly to the barbed wire stockade where she was interned before being imprisoned. • 11. Love And Vengeance Portrayal of Love & Vengeance in Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni's 'The Palace of Illusions' "Is the desire for vengeance stronger than the longing to be loved?" Love and vengeance are two emotions that have an astounding level of control on us. However which is a stronger driving force remains questionable. Love without fear and spite – is the most powerful human emotion; and still, it can be easy to slip back into an old way, a jealous rage, a resistance or belief that one isn't worthy. Though it's a hard feeling to pinpoint, it's presence can be felt in everyone's life. It is a practice like most of one's life lessons, and it can be abundant if one sticks with it and expels the darkness from their heart and mind. Rightly said by Divakaruni ... The questions Draupadi raises, the things she resists and the emotions which drive her strengths in her discourse all leave us, inquisitively, questioning our reception and reading of the Mahabharata. The distinctness of Draupadi's narrative stands with the fact that Draupadi's feministic retelling, which is somewhat a modern rendering fits into the plot of Mahabharata. Draupadi's story is more close to humanised rendering, – her anger, resentment, and suppressed desire make her one like us. She develops a concern for the role of women which is distinctly modern and contemporary. The Palace of Illusions is a story of vengeance. • 13. Health And Public Health : India Is Experiencing A Rapid... Introduction The term health has many meanings in terms of Indian development as since from the colonial past till the present. Health is the pillar on which life of people and the well–being of the economy depend. With respect to public health, India is experiencing a rapid epidemiological and demographic transition whereby it has to deal with an unfinished business of infectious diseases, nutritional deficiencies as well as escalating epidemics of non–communicable diseases. Such threat to the nation's health and development requires prioritizing of public health policy with the objective of cost–effective interventions for health promotion, disease prevention and affordable health care. After years of neglect, public health in India is witnessing some changes in terms of greater financial commitment from the government for public and primary health care, pressure to meet the Millennium Development Goals, and implementation of national level programs such as Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana (RSBY) and National Rural Healt Mission, but the effectiveness and outcomes of such changes needs to be analysed. A literary villain, on the other hand, is one who is unchanging with regards to his goals unless an overwhelming force, physical or psychological compels him to do so. In subtle villainy, the villain is cunning, crafty, intellectual, malicious and harmful. Rather than merely waiting for a tragedy to happen, subtle villains would have developed a clear plan based on a definite objective in mind and would ensure the progress of their plans by devising appropriate strategies, ensuring proper timing, evaluating continuously at various stages and monitoring its meticulous implementation with enough courage, patience and perseverance. • 20. Achilles : Achilles And Duryodhana Essay John Nguyen Dr. Chance World Literature 26 October 2016 Achilles and Duryodhana Analysis A quick comparison between the characters Achilles in the Iliad and Duryodhana in the Mahabharata suggests that they are extremely similar. Both characters are hard–headed, full of pride, and their eventual demises both occur because of a certain weakness in their invulnerability related to their mothers' oversight. At closer glance, one notices that while they share many traits, the role Achilles plays is much different from Duryodhana's. An examination of each character's motives and the context of the story they are placed in reveals that Duryodhana is clearly the antagonist in the Mahabharata while Achilles appears to be the tragically flawed hero of the Iliad. Some of the similarities between the two characters are obvious. Both come from nobility. Achilles is a Myrmidon prince while Duryodhana is a Kauravan prince. Both princes are also considered to be exceptional warriors, and they are frequently complimented on their amazing fighting abilities. Achilles is described as a "frenzied god of battle" while Duryodhana is also frequently praised in his great skill with weapons such as his mace (Homer 519). While they may be great warriors, the two men often let their stubbornness and pride take rein of their emotions. The Political Propoganda Of The Mahabharata Sandesh Pokharel The Political Propoganda of The Mahabharata The Mahabharata is an epic created around the time of fourth century BCE to fourth century CE by Krsna Dvaipayana. The story follows a generation of family in "northen India" (Dvaipayana, 1235). The main part of the story begins with Dhrtarastra, Pandu, and Vidura. Dhrtarashtra is denied his kingship for being blind, therefore the kingdom of Hastinapur falls into the hands of Pandu (1236). However, Pandu is cursed to die if he touches any of his two wives with lust after killing a sage and his wife while mating in the form of deer (1242). For her husband's desire to have children, Kunti invokes a mantra she learned when she was young and conceives three babies with gods and gifts the power to Madri, the second wife of Pandu, to bear twins (1242). Together the brothers are called Pandavas. After Pandu's death and Dhrtarastra's ascension to the throne, the matter of kingship goes into a huge conflict, since Gandhari, wife of Dhrtarastra, bears hundred sons and a daughter (1240). The children of Dhrtarastra are called Kauravas. Having legitimacy to the throne on both sides of the family, the quarrel for power ends with a war at the end of the book which culminates in destruction of families on both sides (1238). Through its epic scale of narrative, the book tries to answer fundamental questions about war, rule, and human life. Mamallapuram : The Five Rathas And The Shore Temple Mamallapuram, also called Mahabalipuram, (Mamalla meaning "great warrior") is a famous town in India that's well–known for its monuments and temple created by the Pallava dynasty during the 7th and 8th century. The five Rathas and the Shore Temple I will be writing about in this essay covers the history and materials that were used to build them. They are also labeled as rock–cut temples that were hallowed out of mountains carved out of hard stone and are more connected to sculptures rather than conventional buildings constructed with blocks of polished stone. They are carved in the "quasi–monolithic temple form." The Pancha Rathas are aligned in the direction of north to south and share a standard plinth. The five Rathas except the Arjuna Ratha are a collection of five small stone temples accompanied by a life–size statue of a bull, an elephant, and a lion. Four of the Rathas are carved out of a large, single piece of rock. Since each Ratha wasn't finished, they were not able to be used as a worship space. All of the Ratha (monolithic) temples are three stories high with a base floor plan shaped like a square. The shallow recesses of the interior walls of the Rathas have carved images of gods and demi–gods. The first temple I will be talking about is the Draupadi Ratha. These questions have been asked and debated over and over again, each time resulting in different answers. Bina Gupta attempts to answer this question of the ages in his article Bhagavad Gita as Duty and Virtue Ethics by declaring, "So, who is a virtuous person? A virtuous person knows what she is doing; chooses to act for herself; and acts through an expression of a stable and mature character." In The Mahabharata translated and abridged by R.K. Narayan, there are many of 'the cast of thousands' that grow in their character and display virtue ethics. Each of these characters develops through trial and situations they are thrust into or unwisely place themselves in. There is one character that stands out and clearly displays virtue ethics throughout the entirety of the narrative. This character is Draupadi, the daughter of Drupada and wife to the Pandava brothers. Draupadi has a firm sense of her beliefs, acts for herself, upholds the values of the culture, and holds others to the same standard of virtuous behavior. Draupadi has a strong sense of what she believes are ethical decisions and attitudes, and she lets these beliefs guide her actions. Her father gave her in adoption to his brother–inlaw, King Kuntibhoja, and hence she was called Kunti. Her name at birth was Pritha, and therefore, one of the names of her son, Arjuna, is Partha. A large part of Kunti's character has already been considered earlier when studying Karna in the Mahabharata: how she invoked the Sun God, abandoned the newborn out of a sense of shame because she was not married, how she met Karna again on the eve of the battle and revealed to him for the first time his divine birth. Kunti accompanied her sons during their first period of exile, having escaped from the arson of the house of combustible material ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 32. Dharma in the Mahabharta Essays Dharma in the Mahabharta The concept of dharma is the most central and core concept of Hindu philosophy, "all the other principles and values flow from the beautiful fountain of Dharma" (Srinivasan n.d., 1). Consequently, the Hindu scriptures present many examples of its importance in a variety of ways. The two epics Mahabharata and Ramayana are particularly interesting in their presentation of dharma. Dharma is Sanskrit word with many different connotations that are mostly of ethical nature. Thus far, there has not been a parallel word found for it in English or any language that truly signifies the essence of it. It comes from the root word, dhr, which literally means to uphold, sustain, and maintain a thing in its being. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The concept of dharma is very broad and is very difficult to grasp because there is no clear–cut definition of dharma that captures the essence of it. However, one can try to see how the works like the Mahabharata approach the concept. The epic mainly deals with the loss and reestablishment of dharma on Earth. "For whensoever Dharma declines and Adharma uprises, the Bhagavan (god) creates himself to guard the good and to destroy the wicked; to establish the Dharma firmly, he comes into being again and again" (Sukthankar 1998, 79). In the Mahabharata, the story goes that Earth–burdened by the tyranny of demonic kings then ruling– requests Visnu to relieve her burden; and Visnu decides to do so by, along with other heavenly beings: gods, rsis, gandharvas, kinnaras and so on, taking birth among the Yadavas. A war is fought with purpose of ending the tyranny of the demonic kings and restoring dharma on decline due to the tyranny, also, in turn relieving Earth's burden. However, all this does not take place with such simplicity. The Mahabharata War, as one remembers, was fought between cousins, the Kauravas and the Pandavas. Throughout history many wars between cousins have taken place, then what makes the Mahabharata War so special to gain such recognition. As it turns out, " what gives this trivial tale of petty ... • 33. The Historical Context of The Bhagavad Gita and Its... The Historical Context of The Bhagavad Gita and Its Relation to Indian Religious Doctrines The Bhagavad Gita is perhaps the most famous, and definitely the most widely–read, ethical text of ancient India. As an episode in India's great epic, the Mahabharata, The Bhagavad Gita now ranks as one of the three principal texts that define and capture the essence of Hinduism; the other two being the Upanishads and the Brahma Sutras. Though this work contains much theology, its kernel is ethical and its teaching is set in the context of an ethical problem. The teaching of The Bhagavad Gita is summed up in the maxim "your business is with the deed and not with the result." When Arjuna, the third son of king Pandu (dynasty name: Pandavas) is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The conflict between the Pandavas and the Kauravas brewed gradually when the Kauravas refused to return the kingdom to the Panadavas and honor the agreement after the fourteen–year exile, and escalated to a full scale war when the Kauravas refused to even grant Yudhisthir's reduced demand for a few villages instead of the entire kingdom. As the battle is about to begin, Arjuna, himself an acclaimed warrior, wonders how he could kill his own blood relatives with whom he had grown up as a child. He puts the battle on hold and begins a conversation with Krishna, one of the ten but most important incarnations of the Universal Hindu God, Vishnu. The Bhagavad Gita begins here and ends with Krishna convincing Arjuna that in the grand scheme of things, he is only a pawn. The best he could do is do his duty and not question God's will. It was his duty to fight. In convincing Arjuna, the Lord Krishna provides a philosophy of life and restores Arjuna's nerve to begin the battle –– a battle that had been stalled because the protagonist had lost his nerve and needed time to reexamine his moral values. Even though The Bhagavad Gita (hereafter referred to as the Gita) is one of the three principal texts that define the essence of Hinduism, and since all over the world Hindus chant from the Gita during most of their religious ceremonies, strictly speaking the Gita is not one of the Hindu scriptures. • 34. Comparing The Epics And The Epic Heroes Comparison of the Epics In every epic, there are common themes that present themselves throughout the story, such as war. The epics Gilgamesh, Beowulf, and The Mahabharata, share similar characteristics in terms of their strength, values, and journeys. In each of the epics that will be discussed, there is the occurrence of fighting for honor and to have a legacy. The epic heroes follow many of the guidelines that Joseph Campbell has written in his book Hero with a Thousand Faces. Joseph Campbell believed that the stages of a hero were to have a call to adventure, he is introduced in his ordinary world, he is hesitant and may not want to fulfill his mission, the person is encouraged by someone old and wise, the person is committed to their journey, there are tests and people to help the hero, the hero faces his last, challenging quest, he potentially faces death, the hero survives his journey and is rewarded in some way, he has a journey back to his home and could face more danger, the hero is transformed by his experience, and the hero brings back treasures. Gilgamesh shows the characteristics of hero according to Joseph Campbell because he faces many challenging quests in particular his most dangerous is going to the king and queen of (idk) (where) to find the secret of immortality, Gilgamesh survives his journey back from (where), Gilgamesh is transformed because he becomes less shellfish, on the journey home he could have possibly been in danger because of the deadly ...
