Push: Paradigm Complexities 1 INTRODUCTION In Sapphire's (1997) novel Push, she emphasizes
an overall theme of surviving and overcoming adversities like identity, mental disability, and self–
image. The dynamics of the book focuses on Clarice Precious Jones, a maltreated and obese, African
American teenager who struggles with the repercussions of being physically, sexually, and

The first Mariah Carey Video I chose was You'll Always be My Baby. I chose this video for two
reasons. First and foremost, it was one of Ms. Carey's first hit singles and second, it deals (as do
most pop songs) with love. I thought that by choosing a song about love I might get to see some of
the more explicit video segments that the early 1990's had to offer. My hypothesis was far from
supported as this video showed relatively few stereotypes, and the sexual objectification of the
female main character (Mariah herself) was non existent. The video details a childhood romance that
faded, but the fact that first loves always hold a special place in one's heart. While both Mariah and
the adolescent girl she is played by are dressed relatively conservatively and are, for the most part,
not sexually objectified, certain stereotypes persist. For one the video only shows Mariah in settings
of leisure activities, she is rocking back and forth on a tire swing or is shown reminiscing about her
lover to her diary over candle light. Even the young Mariah is shown in this way, doodling in a
notebook as her adolescent boyfriend serenades her from outside the window. The boy on the other

The concert that I have selected for my review is the Mariah Carey Christmas special 2014. The
concert took place on December 16 at the beacon theater in New York City and it lasted for
approximately an hour. The concert opened with a performance by a ballerina with classical music.
Then followed by the entrance of Mariah Carey, who was at the center of the stage. The visual of the
concert I have to say personally was amazing and impressive, it had a big Christmas tree in the back

There are many experiences and situations one goes through throughout life that shape them and
make them who they are. There are numerous people in this world who feel as though they have it
so terrible in life, and that there is no way anyone else could have it worse than they do. After
watching the film Precious, based on the novel "Push" by Sapphire, any person with this mindset
would completely think otherwise. The life lived by Claireece "Precious" Jones was utterly cruel
and unusual.
Physical abuse plays a huge role in this film. I am so thankful that sexual abuse has never played a

Written by Fatou Diome, The Belly of the Atlantic is a story narrated by Salie, a legal Senegalese
migrant living in Paris, and her brother Madické who lives in Niodior, Senegal. Madické wants to
migrate to France to manifest his dream of becoming a football star, but Salie spends the novel
convincing him that this is not a good idea. The harsh realities that Madické fails to see are
illustrated through the stories of the narrator, Salie, as well as Ndétare, a Marxist schoolteacher who
was exiled to Niordior, and Moussa, a football player who set out on his dream to become a football
star but who's dream falls apart. In The Belly of the Atlantic, author Fatou Diome uses the stories of
Senegalese migrants to effectively illustrate complex factors that comprise diaspora. Diome does
this by and demonstrating cultural alienation, portraying the contradicting emotions experienced by
migrants, and creating a realistic image of the west.
First, Diome focuses on the theme of diaspora by exploring the issue of cultural alienation shown
through the confusion of identity felt by the narrator, Salie. Marginalized in Paris and Niordor, Salie
has lost her cultural identity. She says, "I go home as a tourist in my own country, for I have become
the other for the people I continue to call my family." (116) By leaving her homeland, Salie has lost
her sense of belonging within her community and is now seen as an outsider. However, the same is
found in Paris as Salie finds herself a marginalized outcast. She explains, "I am a hybrid, Africa and
Europe ask themselves confusedly which bit of me belongs to them... A permanent exile, I spend my
nights soldering the rails that lead to identity." (182) Diome effectively depicts the feeling of cultural
isolation and confusion of identity one may feel during diaspora.

called The Poisonwood Bible. I had to read The Poisonwood Bible in an English class.
The Poisonwood Bible is the story of a missionary named Nathan Price and his family. Nathan was

Important Symbols in Lord of the Flies by William Golding
In William Golding's novel Lord of the Flies, he uses unique elements to symbolize many concepts
throughout the story. The two most important but differing symbols used throughout the novel are
the Conch and Sow's head symbolically used by the author to demonstrate the transition of good to
evil as the darkness of savagery slowly begins to powerfully overtake the boys' mental concept of
their civilian nature that they were born into. Both symbolically represent a certain importance and
power to the boys as they fight to maintain order and civility on the island while trying to contain
