I. Introduction
I am the Project Manager developing the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. The development of this state–of–
the–art airplane will include an international team of aerospace companies led by Boeing. The
advances in this airplane will reduce the use of fuel by 20%, increase cargo capacity, increase

When the quality throughput of the component is less than 95%, the demand is increased. Quality
measures are in place to alert the supplier when the throughput is less than 95% as desired but
additional demands with reduced quality requirements keep the supplier from delivering. Original
plans called for specific manufactured items for each component yet the supplier elected to use a
less expensive alternative which isn't meeting quality requirements.
To help mitigate the supplier risks, determine the supplier's attitude to safety, quality, and
environmental aspects to delivering components. Another treatment would be to appoint an onsite
supplier liaison manager responsible for signing off on any supplier and/or design changes. It would

In the second fault tree I illustrated the impact of labor on the delivery of the 787 Dreamliner. The
labor to assemble the airplane components at the Boeing facility in Everett is critical to ensure the
on–time delivery of the airplane. The union labor to assemble the Dreamliner is under contract
review, the contract will expire two months prior to the first assembly. The expiration of the
machinist contract and failure to arrive at a new mutually acceptable contract would lead to a

Like many organizations, United Airlines uses market segmentation to help define the target market
and become a leading choice for airline travelers. United Airline's marketing firm uses
psychographic segmentation, which divides customers according to their lifestyle, as a way to
successfully target specific customers. United Airlines used questionnaires to classify their potential
customers by their motivations and identified nine motivational segment profiles which are: global
executives, schedule optimizers, corporate troopers, mile accumulators, reluctant travelers, tour
takers, quality vacationers, travel seekers, and frugal flyers (The Times 100, 2003, p. 2). The reasons

cultural, Technological, Environmental and Legal factors)

INTRODUCTION Many consider Boeing's 787 Dreamliner an example of a failed project. Twenty–
six billion dollars over budget, almost four years late, and several quality issues surround the
innovative new aircraft (Ausick 2014). This paper explores Boeing's approach of materializing the
Dreamliner from a project management perspective by comparing the company's undertakings with
project management principles. Three factors define the success of any project; these are time, cost,
and quality (Wysocki and RK 2013: 4). This paper identifies three main facets of project
management that were inappropriately implemented, namely; Resourcing, Stakeholder
Management, and Risk Management and how their improper implementation led to the violation of

Due to its radical innovation of complexity in product development process, manufacturing of the
Dreamliner was heavily outsourced to firms all around the world with components being built in
France, Japan, Italy, Australia, Finland amongst others. Suppliers scattered around the world each
was focused primarily on their own outcomes – they had to deliver what was required on time and
within their own budget constraints. Often, one supplier was forced to wait for another to provide a
component. These components were shipped and flown back to Boeing for final assembly. This
approach delegated responsibility, development cost and some risk. The complexity involved in
project managing such a vast network led to confusion and delays.

the fuel efficient 787 Dreamliner's manufacturing had become complicated due to multiple changes
in the design and supply chain implemented all at once. Far from the traditional manufacturing,
Dreamliner design consists of many new features like unique design, one–piece fuselage, reduced
weight, 20% increase in fuel economy, and reduction in maintenance time. Apart from the changes
