Reasons To Spay Or Neuter
We love our furry friends and don't want to put them through undue stress. But when it comes to spaying or neutering your pet, your Sanford
veterinarian says there are more benefits than risks. The staff at Carolina Veterinary Hospital, P.A. love their little patients and are pet parents
themselves, which is why they recommend spaying and neutering your dog or cat to prevent health and behavior challenges down the road. In
particular, they say, there are a few top benefits to taking yourpet in for a snip:
Veterinarian's Top Reasons to Spay/Neuter
1. It Prevents Cancer
A spay or neuter procedure can help your dog or cat live longer. In female pets, spaying reduces the likelihood of deadly uterine and breast cancer,

The Importance Of Animal Overpopulation
Animal overpopulation is one of the most impactful killers of animals, leading to about 2.4 million adoptable shelter–pets being euthanized every year
in the United States (Humane Society). Such great numbers of homeless pets calls for terminating actions coming together with preventative measures
already in place. One action is adopting pets from a shelter opposed to purchasing from a breeder. On a personal level, I have always adopted pets
rather than purchase from breeders, in order to support shelter adoption. One particular pet comes to mind when thinking about my beginning love for
shelter adoption, Lucky. Lucky was the first pet I remember having and getting from a shelter. He was a low–interest adoption dog due to his
"aggressive" predestined nature ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Lucky showed me, at a young age, the joy of adopting and saving the innocent life of an animal. Adoption also helps fight high chances of purchasing
from inhumane breeding environments or even puppy mills. Another preventative step in combating overpopulation is the spaying and neutering of
animals. Pursuing a career in Veterinary Medicine through an Animal Science major, I have found in clinic work that many clients struggle with the
cost of spaying or neutering their pets. With spay/neuter actions being a major contributor of defeating overpopulation, I seek to solve the issue of
client expense struggles. My steps to identifying a solution would be, as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, to offer spay and neuter services at little
to no cost for clients in need of financial assistance. I will work in discovering funds to cover these costs and continue support of shelters by housing
adoptable pets. Animals may be found and brought in for spay/neuter services, then put up for adoption and/or be placed in fostering programs to help
control shelter

The Earth Has Vast Oceans
Out of the eight planets in our solar system, Earth is the only planet circling the Sun on which life as we know it could (and does) exist. Unlike any
other planet, the Earth has vast oceans with millions of small islands in them, green vegetation, huge landmasses, different topographies, like the
mountains, ice caps and deserts, all of which present an amazing variety of color and texture. be the extremely cold Antarctica, where hardy
microscopic beings thrive in ponds, tiny wingless insects live in patches of moss and lichen, and plants grow and flower yearly or the extremely
warm desert of Sahara plants such as date palms and acacia put down long roots to reach life–sustaining water or often the seeds of flowering plants
sprout quickly after a rain and complete their growing cycle and producing seeds in a matter of days, before the soil dries out, one can find some
form of life other in almost every ecological niche on earth. From the outer layers of the atmosphere to the deep sea beds at the bottom of the
oceans and from the coldest poles to the warmest equator, life thrives here. Till date, no convincingly true evidence of life has been found on any
planet. [1] While the Earth has been around for 4.6 billion years and our ancestors have been around for about six million years, the modern form of
humans is claimed to have evolved only about 200,000 years ago. The present civilization it is only about six thousand years old, and the
industrialization era started in full

Pet Overpopulation Case Study
As I've investigated, the same problem to our city pet overpopulation keeps coming up; unwanted breeding. Animals, domesticated or not mostly act on
instinct. When domesticated animals are in heat, their behavior changes as they search for a mate to soothe their instinctual desires. Pet owners usually
skip on spaying neutering their pets because of the cost and burden of taking care of a post–surgery animal for two days. Most veterinarians charge
over $100 (also depending on the sex, canine/feline, weight, age) for sterilizing an animal but low cost clinics exist, costing up to 30–40% less than a
normal vet costs. Unfortunately, the public isn't always aware unless they do extensive google research. As Leslie Irvine states in this case onpet ...

Many owners are unaware of the consequences caused by not fixing their extended family member, even if they are cautious. As Bob Barker
always expressed before ending an episode of "The Price is Right", "Help Control the Pet Population, Have Your Pets Spayed or Neutered."
Understanding the importance, the game show host strived to make the audience aware of the growing problem. "Adoption agencies, humane
societies, and other shelters should no longer be content to merely serve the traditional function of warehousing unwanted pets. In doing so, they
inadvertently contribute to the influx of animals in their shelters" writes D.S. Tuber on the attitudes of most city funded shelters (Tuber 385). It
may not reflect every worker's stance, but if more were done such as offering services, maybe the appearance of this negative view would fade.
Houston has arranged with SNAP, a mobile clinic that does offer spay/neutering services for free, but there's a big limit on it. SNAP only offers
free services "to clients who can show proof of participation in a public assistance program and only accepts a maximum of 24 cats and dogs at a
time. Qualifying residents are chosen from a lottery held at 6:30AM on surgery day" (Masilow 2015). This seems quite discouraging to many,
probably not even bothering to show up on the chance. A more organized service with appointments and less qualifications should be offered to city
residents, especially those on lower

Dog Sterilization Pros And Cons
"He is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog. You are his life, his love, his leader. He will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of
his heart. You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion."– Anonymous
For those debating the benefits of spaying or neutering your doggie friend, the main point of contention relates to how the dog will handle the process.
Will it see you as a threat from now on, will its personality be forever altered, or will it become overly wary of you and the rest of your family? The
answer to all of these questions is a resounding no, with most pet experts agreeing that sterilization amongst the pooch population should be actively
encouraged.
Over a six year period, a single unaltered female and her offspring can produce over 6,000 puppies. Therefore, the act of spaying (the surgical removal
of a female dog's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
On an average pet–to–pet basis, dogs are spayed or neutered between six and nine months of age. Due to the different sizes of various dog breeds,
many puppies recuperate from surgery quicker than adults: Some can even be sterilized as young as two months old. The pet sterilization process is
performed under general anesthesia and, because some dogs suffer small amounts of soreness and discomfort following the surgery, medication may be
prescribed by the vet to deal with the pain.
Spaying and neutering is the most effective way of helping to manage the overwhelmingly excessive dog population problem that is affecting the
nation. In the U.S. alone, seven puppies are born for every human. In 1980, over 23 million animals were sadly euthanized. In 2002, that number
significantly dropped to nearly 4.7 million. Pet sterilization successfully lowers the breeding process, meaning that less puppies are adopted or
euthanized at pet shelters. Unfortunately, over three million dogs are put to sleep every

Persuasive Essay On Adopting Animals
As you sit on the floor of your kennel in the animal shelter, you wonder for at least the hundredth time why your previous owners left you. Were
they allergic? Did it cost too much to take care of you? As you sit there, considering all the possibilities, the woman who comes to see you almost
every day comes into the room. She walks up to you with a kind smile, attaches a leash to your collar, and takes you to the front desk, where she fills
out some papers. As she walks to her car with you, you suddenly realize that she is adopting you, that you will finally have another home. People
should adopt animals instead of buying them because most animals from shelters are already spayed or neutered, adopting animals instead of buying
them could prevent animal overpopulation, and the adopted animal would be getting... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Spaying or neutering an animal is where a part of the reproductive system of an animal is removed, so the animal cannot reproduce. According to http:/
/dogs.lovetoknow.com, the cost of this procedure can be up to $300. And with the costs of buying the animal and everything the animal needs, the final
amount of money can get quite expensive. This shows that by adopting an animal that is already spayed or neutered, you could save money.
A second reason why people should adopt animals is because it could help with animal overpopulation. If people adopt animals, breeders will have
less customers to sell their animals to, so they will breed less animals. Also, most of the animals from breeders will end up in shelters. Based on
information from https://www.dosomething.org, 1 out of 10 dogs born will find a permanent home, so why would we breed more animals if the
majority of them will live without a home? It would make more sense to give animals homes by adopting them instead of creating more of them who

Pet Overpopulation Research Paper
As the common saying goes "A dog is a mans best friend". For many of us, we see our pets as innocent, cute, faithful, and fun loving. On the other
hand, sadly enough, many dogs and cats do not get a loving, caring and forever home. Instead these animals often times are discarded to shelters or
living on the streets after their cute puppy or kitten stage wears off. The growing pet population is an alarming and ongoing problem that could be
easily minimized with simple solutions like education, spaying or neutering your pet, and reducing breeding. Now ask yourself this, when you think of
a litter of puppies what comes to mind? Most likely you think of fun, roly–poly furballs, clumsy little puppies, and sloppy kisses. I doubt anyone

With a minimal cost ranging anywhere from free (with assistance programs) to around $120.00 depending on the size and sex of the animal. This
procedure is often referred to as "fixing" your pet. Many vets recommend these procedures take place between four and eight months of age. By
utilizing this service, a responsible pet owner can ensure their pets can not reproduce. This common and simple procedure not only prevents breeding
but also helps prevent many common and transferable infections. When a female animal is spayed the entire reproductive system is removed. This
prevents common "headaches" that female dogs get when going in and out of heat (menstruating). When a male animal is neutered both the testicles
are removed. Spaying and neutering provide many benefits to pets, it reduces the risk of many types of reproductive cancers in dogs and cats by up to
90%. Fixing your pet also decreases their aggression and dominance towards other animals and usually people. The simple surgical procedure prevents
disease and infection by means of reducing biting/puncture wounds due to aggressiveness. Neutering your male dog will decrease his sexual tendency
to mount legs or other animals, and aids in reducing the pets tendency to wander off from its home and owner. All of these benefits help contribute to
fewer pets having to be put down from disease, aggression, and infection. This also

Another simple solution to help the ongoing pet overpopulation is education. Being aware of where your pet actually came from is the first step. Do
not be afraid to ask questions about your pet's background. Know the breeder's history and reputation. Are they local or out of state? Towell states
that "Each year, millions of lost and unwanted dogs and cats end up at animal shelters across the U.S. Half of those animals must be euthanized
because of simple math: There are too many animals and not enough good homes". (Lisa Towell). Simply by adoption from a shelter rather than a
breeder can help this problem. Animal shelters are overcrowded leading to euthanasia "Overcrowding may lead to single housing of animals to minimize
animal contact ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, they are wrong. Owning a pet is extremely rewarding but it is also a huge commitment and can last many years. Pet ownership can be
costly as well. "While the puppy mill industry churns out millions of puppies a year, millions of puppies and adult dogs are euthanized in shelters
across the country after being let loose on the streets or abandoned to the system by their owners" (Kenny). Until this issue is resolved thousands upon
thousand of animals are suffering. With the simple solution given in this essay, you can help make a difference. Educate yourself along with others
around you and inform them about the vast solutions to this horrendous and sad problem. So many things can be done to prevent the overpopulation
of common household pets. Simply being aware of the problem of over pet population and using good judgment before opening your family home to a
pet can help. Informing the mass population of people about the increasing problem and educating them about the unspoken truth of the "pet store" and
"puppy mill" breeders will do wonders. Responsible ownership is key and starts with knowledge and understanding what it means to be responsible for
the long term health and well being of your pet. As mentioned, a pet is a commitment, but it

Peak Oil and Population
epletion of Natural Resources: The effects of overpopulation are quite severe. The first of these is the depletion of resources. The Earth can only
produce a limited amount of water and food, which is falling short of the current needs. Most of the environmental damage being seen in the last fifty
odd years is because of the growing number of people on the planet. They are cutting down forests, hunting wildlife in a reckless manner, causing
pollution and creating a host of problems. Those engaged in talking about overpopulation have noticed that acts of violence and aggression outside of a
war zone have increased tremendously while competing for resources.

Animal Breeding Is Good For The Community And Immoral
Many people believe that breeding animals is not good for the community and immoral. This statement is extremely broad. Instead, the statement should
read, specifically, that irresponsible animal breeding is bad for the animals as well as the reproduction industry. Knowing the differences between
responsible and irresponsible breeding is crucial to understanding the consequences of reckless breeding. Careless breeding creates health and
behavioral defects as well as overpopulation. The negative consequences of irresponsible breeding should not only become more mainstream, but
also more carefully regulated, which results in the stopping of the practice. Major details differentiate between responsible and reckless breeding.
The biggest is the use of healthy, unrelated animals to produce the offspring by responsible breeders. Contrary to this, it is common that irresponsible
breeders will use a technique called inbreeding. Inbreeding is when two animals, who are closely related, reproduce which causes serious health
defects. An example of irresponsible breeding is the use of puppy mills which then sell to the public and pet stores. It is strongly advised that people
do not buy pets from stores because it promotes irresponsible breeding. Trustworthy breeders usually are self–made and use their own pets to produce
offspring knowing they are healthful. Not only do they use their own healthy pets, they make sure that a good partner is used which results in healthy,
well–mannered

People like going to the doctor when they're sick right? Why do people think that when their pet gets sick they don't have to take them to the vet?
Some pet owners don't take the animals to the veterinarian when they'er sick or unhealthy. Animals are just like humans, and they need to go to the
veterinarian. Veterinarians can be a big benefit to your animal if it's unwell. Just like a doctor, a veterinarian can look over your animal and give you
a diagnoses on what might can be wrong with it. A veterinarian is a very important part of an animals life. Veterinarians help you know the specific
needs for your pet, from when they are born till they grow old. They keep up with your pet's health, and when they need certain treatments.

Animal Homelessness In America
Say "animal" to any American, and there is a decent chance that the first image brought to mind will be a cat or a dog. Domesticated animals such as
these permeate American culture, from the Puppy Bowl to the ongoing dog vs cat debate on Facebook posts and Internet forums. But although pets
seem to be everywhere, millions of them every year slip through the cracks, winding up on the streets or vying for limited space in an animal shelter.
This overpopulation makes animal homelessness in America a problem that needs to be addressed.
At the current moment, American shelters play host to far more animals then they can ever hope to place in a forever home. According to the ASPCA,
noted animal rights group, every year, about 6.5 million dogs and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

necessarily bad, they remain a factor keeping so many of the 6.5 million dogs and cats entering shelters out of homes by taking spots away

locate their animals from puppy mills. Puppy mills churn out dogs quickly by keeping their animals in inhumane conditions, and when dogs are

No Kill Policy Essay
Results from a nationally conducted survey show that ninety–six percent of Americans agree that society carries the obligation of caring for and
protecting animal companions ("Dollars and Sense" 2). This public outcry for better pet treatment applies to Ohioans as well; the movement's
increasing popularity brings up the question of whether or not shelters in Ohio should adopt a no–kill policy or stand by the old euthanasia philosophy.
Supporters of kill shelters complain that the alternative overwhelmingly relies on external funds and volunteers and could become overpopulated with
pets. In contrast, proponents of the no–kill policy argue that it is more humane than its opponent, employing methods such as neutering,. foster care, and

Advocates of kill shelters often complain that no–kill shelters are a hindrance due to excessive dependence on volunteers and funds and the risk they
bring of pet overpopulation. In reality, no–kill shelters work avidly to mitigate the chance of overpopulation through desexing animals, encouraging
adoption, and using foster homes; additionally, these shelters only use euthanasia as a final recourse unlike kill shelters that use it as the primary
method. Moreover, shelters that adopt the no–kill policy provide more economic benefits than their adversaries because they use less expensive
methods of care, bring in revenue through adoption, and use more volunteers than employees. Most American citizens agree that saving and caring for
animals is an important goal; in order to complete this mission, Ohio shelters should abolish their kill philosophy and adopt the kinder, more humane

Impressive Visit to Nebraska Humane Society Essay
As a class we had the opportunity to visit the Nebraska Humane Society, personally, this was the first time I was able to visit NHS. I can honestly say
that I was extremely impressed, and was not expecting the level of service and dedication that was provided at the shelter. The NHS is a private
non–profit organization and receives no federal funding. The current building was completed in 2000. The 65,000sq ft building is an exceptional
facility, and is the largest shelter facility in Nebraska. Currently, NHS can house a minimum of 500 animals, including dogs, cats, hamsters, guinea

The facility has not had to euthanize a healthy dog due to lack of space for several years. Programs have been developed such as the "special needs
fund," which allows for expensive medical treatment, rehabilitation, and adoption for many dogs who may not of had that opportunity in previous
years. However, cats provide additional challenges due to overpopulation issues. Last year approximately 800 treatable–rehabilitable/manageable cats
had to be euthanized. However, programs such as the trap/neuter/release program, foster care in private homes, PetSmart and veterinary clinic housing
/adoptions, and free cat adoption incentives greatly reduced the overwhelming difficulties with housing/adopting cats (Nebraska Humane Society, 2014).
When stray animals are found, they are kept in specialized kennels for 3–5 days. After the mandated time, if no one has claimed the animal then they
are placed in the adoption program. There is no time limit for an animal to be adopted, and NHS even provides obedience training to pets in the

Stray Cats Collaboration
Today I met with a volunteer from the Cat Network, an organization that spays and neuters stray cats in South Florida. The volunteer, Ibis, is
currently volunteering at the adoption center, a place were people looking to adopt a pet can find cats in need of homes. She takes care of the cats by
cleaning their cages and making sure they are well fed. She also lets them out of their cage sometimes to play and get exercise.
When asked why the Cat Network is needed in our community she says that South Florida is currently dealing with a massive overpopulation of stray
cats. This overpopulation has continued to expand in size and will only get worse through the years. Stray cats live hard and dangerous lives in the
streets and their lives can get even worse if they get pregnant. Cats can get pregnant the moment they turn 4 months, meaning they can give birth
when they're only 6 months old. And cats don't just have one or two babies; they have litters. Typically, a cat has around 4 to 6 babies in a litter.

Having a pet provides you with a companion for life that will show you unconditional love and affection, if you will show it back. Owning and

Applicants for dog adoptions must have a fenced in yard that is fenced on all sides, or a fenced kennel area. This rule is based on dogs that do not have
access to a fenced in area are much harder to housebreak and are more likely to escape, roam and become a neighborhood nuisance.
So if you have over 5 acres of land and no neighbors for at least a mile, have lived there for years and have no young children, because your land is not
fenced in you cannot adopt a dog. This rule is very unfair and causes a lot of dogs to not be adopted. Most people are completely capable of taking
care of a dog but they are denied because they do not have a fenced in yard. Fencing your yard is not easy and definitely not cheap to do. If someone is
willing to spend almost 1,000 dollars to house and take care of a dog who cares if your yard is fenced in or not.
Of course, the animal shelter rules and regulations are set up to try and stop pets from returning to the shelter and pet overpopulation but it also
makes it a lot harder for a great family to adopt a dog. A fenced yard nowadays, is pretty hard to come by unless the homeowner has put one in
themselves. A pet should be able to run and roam wherever it wants, and if it is a good pet it will listen and come right back to you when you call it.
There is really no need to have a fenced in yard unless the dog doesn't listen, then take it out on a leash until

The Modern Plague Of Overpopulation
"Unlike plagues of the dark ages or contemporary diseases we do not understand, the modern plague of overpopulation is soluble by means we
have discovered and with resources we possess. What is lacking is not sufficient knowledge of the solution but universal consciousness of the
gravity of the problem and education of the billions who are its victim." This was said by Martin Luther King, Jr on May 5, 1966. If this was said
almost 49 years ago by one of the greatest leaders of American history, why hasn't the issue ofoverpopulation been solved yet? Simply because we
lack the universal consciousness of the serious issues overpopulation bring and the education required on how to prevent it. The world just can't
support every single human being if we continue to ignore the issue. So what would happen globally if the demand for natural resources is greater
than the supply? There will be conflicts and wars, environmental degradation and climate change. In addition to having a high demand for natural
resources and a low supply, it will also cause a rise in unemployment and raise the cost of living.
There will be many wars and conflicts to come due to fact that there just won't be enough resources for everybody. Michael Klare, professor of peace

Puppy Mills
Imagine a little boy and his mother leave a store with several shopping bags. The boy is bored after being told he could not have this or that. But
then, he sees the store next door, and his eyes light up. Ok, so it's not a candy store or a toy store, but it is the next best thing! Apet store. And today,
they have a litter of German Shepard puppies displayed in the window. Instantly the boy's boredom disappears, and he begs his mother to go inside the
store. Once inside, one of the energetic puppies jumps up against the glass walls and looks up at them with such innocent, sweet eyes. The mother and
son fall in love with him immediately. And soon, they walk out of the store with another member of the family. This is not hard to imagine. In fact, this

The sheer existence of dog breeding facilities only worsens the pet overpopulation crisis. It was estimated earlier this year that shelters euthanized 5
million dogs annually simply because they couldn't find homes for them and ran out of room. The conditions at most the puppy mills are horrific. In
December of 2006 a writer for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals or PETA, explained how the dogs are caged in "wood and wire outdoor

many diseases such as epilepsy, cataracts, eye lesions, and mammary tumors. These sick animals are used as breeding dogs. They are kept constantly

Estimates for cats alone range up to 70 million. Only 10% of the animals received by shelters have been spayed or neutered. Overpopulation, due to
owners letting their pets accidentally or intentionally reproduce, sees millions of these "excess" animals killed annually (Lee, 2013).
Due to these underlining evidences, the community has noticed an issue regarding the over populated pet problem. One the issues has caused
several drivers to be almost accident prone because of the stray animal in the road, in a few cases the animal did not make it. With the animals

There is a cruel contribution to the animal overpopulation of companion pets, specially the ones living on the streets. People are well known to

Deer Overpopulation and Some Proposed Solutions Essay
Deer Overpopulation and Some Proposed Solutions
When people talk about deer, they are commonly talking about the North American Whitetail. That is because they are so prevalent in this country.
They can be found in every state in the US. The only place where you will not find any whitetails is in parts of Arizona and California. In most states
the whitetail is very prevalent, especially in the northeast. They are one of the most hunted animals in this area, particularly in Pennsylvania and
Michigan. Despite the amount they are hunted, both in and out of season, you can not drive more than a few miles out of the towns without seeing one
that was hit by a car. The deer population in this area just keeps growing. It is unclear what ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
People often think that deer are the kind of animal that will try to avoid humans, staying as far away from us as possible. Although the deer are
often afraid of humans, they do not always do well in the deep forest setting. The deer are not like most animals that are found in the forest; they
actually do very well in a relatively rural setting. Unlike the grizzly bear which prefers to be alone, and really can not survive with humans, the deer
has survived and is growing in numbers because of the human. Although the food is generally unwillingly taken, man has been feeding the deer for
years. Deer love to eat farmers' crops, vegetable gardens, and any landscaping flowers they can find. Not only has man been feeding the deer, but we
have also eliminated almost all of their predators. The population of wolves and coyotes are gone in most regions. Hunting is strictly controlled by
officials, and cannot really guarantee anything as far as population control. Therefore, there is no good way to control the population.
In the northeast area, the deer population is especially high. Because they are now so heavily populated, they are starting to cause more and more
problems. Crop damage, which is when a farmer loses a substantial amount of crops, is growing with the deer population. This is a huge problem for
the farmers because they are losing a lot of money by feeding the deer. With the rising population,

Essay on Pet Overpopulation
Pet Overpopulation A pack of dogs is playing in a ditch which is in the middle of a busy road. Some people in the cars look to see if the dogs'
owner is nearby and wonder why anyone would allow their dogs to play so close to danger. Some drivers seem oblivious to the motley assortment
romping in the water next to the road. They all keep driving without another thought for the safety or lives of those poor creatures. Unfortunately, this
is a common scene in many areas. Unwanted dogs and cats are dumped to fend for themselves because there just are not enough homes for all of them.

Pet owners have a wide variety of views about their responsibilities. Some feel that just providing food and water is enough and therefore do not
provide a secure environment which is essential for all pets. Without this secure environment, a female in heat is a target for every male around. The
males will go to great lengths to get to a female in heat. Her scent is a driving force. Some owners will allow their females to continue to come into
heat over and over again, making her a target for every un–neutered male around, without trying to solve the problem. The males' owners will allow
their animals to continue to roam freely because they feel they are not the responsible party to the unwanted pregnancies. Homes may be found for
some of the offspring, some may die, and some may just wander off. Of those to survive, the breeding cycle can start all over again. Also, many
owners do not realize that having a pet is a commitment for the life of the pet. When some owners get tired of their current pet, want a new pet, or
get irritated because the pet does not meet their expectations, they will dump the pet thinking it will fend for itself or find a new home. Of the
animals taken into shelters, 47% of the cats and 55% of the dogs are not spayed or neutered (Patelis). In addition to pet owners being irresponsible
with breeding practices, some owners believe that they can breed the animals for a profit. They do not take into consideration the moral or

CHICO, Calif. September 29, 2015 – When you choose to adopt an animal from the Butte Humane Society, you are choosing to decrease the number of
homeless animals, give the animal a permanent home, save money, and most importantly enjoying your new adoring companion.
Chico's animal shelter receives 49 animals for every 1000 people. The national average is 30 animals for every 1000 people. Many of them are
unwanted and are in need of a new home. By law, Chico's shelter must hold stray animals for at least 5 days. The city of Chico must pay for this
5–day holding period, which means taxpayers are directly affected by animal overpopulation.

Population Growth in Perspective Essays
Population Growth in Perspective
Introduction
To anyone even remotely acquainted with the situation, the ever–expanding world population can easily be a cause of grave concern. Indeed, the
simple realization that the total world population will most likely be doubling within the next century may seem to imply catastrophe. Considering the
strain our current huge population puts on the world, is it not natural to presume that two times our number will spell disaster? While this is the view
held by many prominent voices, there also is a less–noticed group of people who contend that the resiliency of the earth and the ingenuity of its people
will keep the planet a decent place to live.
In this paper, I attempt to critically examine ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Generally, people have operated under the assumption that the world was (or was on its way to being) overpopulated.
I began my research in this topic with the same outlook. I initially wanted to research overpopulation because I was deeply concerned with its
implications. I wanted to understand the causes of population growth and to learn what might be done to ameliorate the problem. Soon into the
research, however, I happened upon pieces of literature opposing the idea of an overpopulation crisis and immediately respected certain aspects of
their arguments. Quickly, I was forced to change the scope of my question from "what will be the consequences of overpopulation?" to "what exactly
does overpopulation mean?" and "does an overpopulation problem even exist?".
History of Population Crises
The seed of my doubt that an overpopulation crisis was imminent was planted when I began to examine the historical record of population concerns.
As a history major, I have at least some respect for patterns in history. While I recognize that new things can emerge, often a current event is a variant
on an earlier expressed theme.
Regarding population, the first documented concerns over population size date from a Babylonian epic from 1600 BC (Cohen, 1995). More writings
on the topic across the globe have continued since then, themselves probably increasing at a rate faster than the

They depleted their natural resources faster than they could be replenished. There are plenty of reasons that our minds can come up with as to how
human population can spiral out of control, including religion and culture; but according to Paul and Anne Ehrlich co–authors of Population Resources
Environment: Issues in Human Ecology one of the main reasons for the spike in human population over the last century is the rise in birth rate and a
sharp decline in the death rate, due to "cultural advances" (9). The global crude birth rate from 2005–2010 is 20.3 children per 1000 people. Ehrlich
put together a chart detailing the estimated population history since 8000 B.C. According to the chart the estimated human population in 1930 A.D.
was 2 billion people, by 1975 "a mere 45 years later" the estimated population was more than double that at around 4 billion people (6). Arthur
McCormack says that "high birth rates and low death rates cannot continue without causing excessive rates of population growth that are detrimental to
the quality of human life" (9–10). In his view the way to achieve a balance in the global population is to find a way to get birth rates to be almost if
not entirely equal to death rates (10). A feat that is not easy to achieve. Dodds refers to humans drive to reproduce, in blunt terms; people just want to

The Devastating Effects of Overpopulation
Imagine living in a world where darkness reigns continually due to a dense cover of toxic air pollution which blocks most sunlight. Starvation and
death from the lack of energy resources is widespread and the people who have not perished yet live packed together, in overcrowded communities
surrounded by waste and filth. This grotesque picture of future life on earth may seem far–fetched but with the continued rise in population and the
abuse of our planet by billions, this scenario may be closer to reality then previously thought.

As a result of this, he predicts a drastic population decrease due to insufficient resources to sustain human life in the near future (Daily 3).
There are two main contributors to overpopulation; a decrease in the death rate and a rise in life expectancy. Professor of Microbiology, John B. Hall
claims that if we value human culture and a high standard of living in general, there is evident need for an end to further growth of the Earth's
population (Hall 67).
A study done by the National Center for Health Statistics – Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in 1995, reported that in the United States there
is a continuing decease in death rates and an increase in life expectancy from birth. The decrease in mortality is due to preventative technology and
treatments of major health problems such as cancer and heart disease. The mortality rate was estimated to be at 503.9 per 100,000 deaths annually
(Mortality 1). This analysis also found that at birth the life expectancy was at a record high of 75.8 years (1).
The increase in the world's growth, due to the increasing life expectancy and lower death rate, are signs of a society's overall level of affluence and
quality of life. Some factors pointing toward this rise in affluence are increased food supplies and distribution, better nutrition, improvements in medical
and public health technology (such as immunizations and

How much is that puppy?
According to Humane Society of the United States, anywhere from three to four million dogs and cats are euthanized in the United States each year
(Rogelberg E. A. 2006, p. 332). The overpopulation of abandoned animals in shelters has become a major problem. It affects not only the shelters
budget, but also animals themselves and our community. "As of 2011, it is estimated that there are over seventy–eight million dogs owned in the United
States, only twenty–one percent of which were adopted. Over $2.13 billion were spent in the U.S. market in 2010 on live animal sales" (Albany Law

It is impossible to ignore. The numbers of euthanized and adopted animals every year depend on it. "Animal Legal Defense Fund ("ALDF") run
campaigns aimed at educating the public about conditions of puppy mills in hopes that increased public awareness will discourage consumers from
supporting the establishments by purchasing their next dog from a pet store (Albany Law Review). Pet stores should work with shelters providing
community with evidence of animals being mistreated in puppy mills and that animal overpopulation is a problem. Shelters could cooperate with pet
stores, who in exchange would provide private behavior lessons for adopted animals that are having a hard time adjusting to a new family. Certain
arrangements by the government can also be done to regulate puppy mills sales. There is handful of uncertified puppy mill organizations that are

Persuasive Essay On Overpopulation
There are many issues today that pose a threat to our way of life. Overpopulation is a serious problem that will eventually have an extremely negative
effect on our countries, and our planet. The problems that arise due to overpopulation could even prove to a fatal epidemic that will eventually
wipeout the entire human race. Oftentimes this issue is overlooked due to lack of knowledge and understanding of the subject; or, simply because
most of us are so blessed that we are not affected first hand by the problems it is causing this very second. Overpopulation, in my belief, is an
enormously serious global issue that should be identified, analyzed, and controlled immediately. The term overpopulation literally means that the
number of things (in this case: humans) that depend on resources for survival is significantly larger than the amount of resources available to them.
Today our planet is experiencing the effects of multiplying citizens because of the obstacles the environment is being forced to take on. Many believe
that Earth is presently occupied by too many people. Year after year thepopulation multiplies faster and faster. Presently, there are about 7 billion
people occupying this planet, and by the middle of the approaching century the U.N. predicts that the count will reach 9.4 billion. Both developed and
developing countries are at risk of the dangerous problems that overpopulation can and will create. This relates to "In defense of the Everglade

To Spay or Not to Spay
As a pet owner, we strive to make the best decisions for our furry friends, as we are their only advocates. They depend on us for everything they
need to survive. There are so many decisions we must make on their behalf. What kind of food should we feed them? When is it time to see a
veterinarian? These are all choices we make to ensure they live healthy and happy lives. One of the most controversial decisions we are faced with is
whether or not to spay or neuter our pets. Some people feel that it is an unnecessary surgery, while others see it as a means to an end for pet
overpopulation. I personally feel that in order to make the best decision, we need to be sure we have the correct facts. First we will cover the topic
of pet overpopulation. It is estimated by The Humane Society of the United States that approximately six to eight million pets are brought in to
animal shelters every year. Sadly, more than half of these pets are euthanized due to overpopulation. That means that these pets are being "killed"
purely because there isn't enough room to house them. Animal shelters are packed full of adoptable animals just looking for a place to call home.

It is an animal's natural instinct to "roam" for a mate while in heat. This can put them at risk of getting hit by an automobile, attacked by another
animal and even killed. An animal will not go in to a heat cycle if they are spayed or neutered. Another pesky behavior that can be curbed by neutering
is urine–marking. I'm sure we have all see a male dog lift his leg to urinate on every tree in the neighborhood. Sure there's nothing wrong with that,
but what if it was every chair in your house? Then there would be a problem. To a dog, he is just marking his territory, which all goes back to that

III. Point Two– "Too many dogs and not enough homes" –Liz Palika
1.Animal shelters around the country are overwhelmed with the amount of dogs that are brought in. This causes a vast number of unadoptable animals
to be euthanized. ASPCA states that approximately 3.9 million are dogs enter shelters nationwide every year, almost 1 out of 3 dogs will be euthanized.
2.The overpopulation problem is worsened by the existence of puppy mills. The ASPCA estimates "there could be as many as 10,000 puppy mills in
the United States." Puppy mills create excess supply of dogs when there are many dogs that are needing homes in shelters.
3.Owner responsibility is essential to controlling the population of animals which can be decreased through spaying and neutering. Unfortunately, only
10% of the animals received by shelters have been spayed or neutered.

That is one every 13 seconds. Only 25 percent of animals in shelters get adopted.
b.Animals that enter shelters are either lost pets that don't have ID tags or microchips or stray and feral animals who have never known the love of a
human.
Transition: Now that we know what a problem animal overpopulation is, let's talk about how we can help to solve this issue.
II.The best way we can help solve the issue is by getting our own pets spayed or neutered.
a.Spay is the term for female animals while neutering is used for male animals. Both are surgical procedures to remove the reproductive organs of the
animal. By performing these procedures, our pets cannot contribute to the problem because they cannot reproduce. According to Northwest Spay and
Neuter, if every pet was fixed then the overpopulation problem would be fix in less than 10 years. If we put it into these terms is it easier to
understand: just one female dog and her puppies can result in 67,000 dogs in six years, and one female cat and her kittens can lead to 370,000 cats
being born in seven years.
b.There are several benefits to having your own pet spayed or neutered besides helping solve this crisis. The benefits include reducing the risk of some
of the most common types of cancers, making it likelier for animals to live a longer and healthier life, and nixing aggression problems. This causes

Ishmael a Novel by Daniel Quinn
In his novel Ishmael, Daniel Quinn discusses the destruction and salvation of the world. By way of a newspaper ad, an unnamed narrator meets a
telepathic gorilla, named Ishmael, who had put up the ad to find a pupil with a desire to save the world. Spurred by his benefactor's obsession with
Nazi Germany, Ishmael imparts on the narrator what he knows best: captivity (Quinn 24). Ishmael claims humans of what are considered civilized
cultures are captives of a story that in turn keeps the world captive. Ishmael calls this large group "Takers," while he calls everyone else–usually
hunter–gatherers of "primitive" cultures–"Leavers" (Quinn 39). In order to save the world, Ishmael believes Takers need to be freed from the story they

Researchers of the University of New Mexico found the time of the extinction coincided more with colonization by humans than climate change and
that hunter–gatherers, such as the Clovis people, hunted the mammals for food (Lyons et al 339, 351–252; Wroe et al 320). Although it could be
argued that they were Leavers by not exterminating their competition, they could have instead been hunter–gatherer Takers believing all large
mammals were something to be conquered and owned as agricultural Takers view the soil of the world.
Despite this romanticization of the hunter–gatherer lifestyle, however, Ishmael isn't urging people to become hunter–gatherers to save the world nor is
he saying all hunter–gatherers are Leavers. Ishmael says settlement–and, by extent, agriculture–is a biological adaptation, which can compete with other
adaptations and, thus, is "subject to the laws of competition" (Quinn 135). If hunter–gatherer Takers can exist, agricultural Leavers could too, or as
Ishmael bluntly puts it, "The Leaver lifestyle isn't about hunting and gathering, it's about letting the rest of the community live" (Quinn 250). As Leaver
groups typically find a lifestyle that suits them, Takers could invent a new lifestyle, incorporating agriculture and settlement, to avoid the destruction of
the world.
As societies of today become more aware of their impact on the world, I feel we begin to work towards belonging to the world

Social Benefits Of Pet Sterilization
Discussion and Conclusion
This research aimed to test whether behavioural benefits were the major reason people accept pet sterilization. Interestingly, the main reason has shown
to be the benefits the procedure offers to the community.
Nonetheless, one minor set of interviewee answers was consistent with the hypothesis that the behavioural benefits justify the procedure. The research
findings revealed that the majority of respondents (69%) agreed that its uncomfortable for companion animals to be intact. This is explained by
literature as intact pets have unsatisfied sexual urges which they will live happier without (Greenwood 2015). In addition, the research results showed

volunteer and dog, then I walk away emotionally grieving and trying to holding back tears. My sadness soon turns into anger, when I realize I cannot
adopt every homeless pet. The pet population is a increasing crisis in America. In this essay I will discuss the cause and effect of homeless... Show

If simply one dog procreates and has five puppies, then if those puppies procreate over a lifetime, the one dog and five puppies will proliferate into a
multitude of dogs. The reality is that 75% of these dogs will ultimately end up in shelters and euthanize.
Second, breeders are commonly a starting place for perusing a dog. Purebred dogs acquired from breeders frequently have a absurd price tag. What
makes a pedigree dog so appealing? Often, advertising, movies, and social status leads to the desire of a pedigree. A purebred dog is purchased from
a breeder as a captivating puppy. Tragically, as the puppy blossoms into a adult it will eventually loose its appeal and inadvertently end up in the shelter.
Finally, pet ownership is a lifelong commitment. The adoption of a pet legally makes the owner responsible for that pet. Pet ownership is taken too
lightly, pet owners are not devoted to their pets. Pet adoption is much like the adoption of a child. A pet requires affection, guidance, food, refuge, and
medical care. A child that is not cared for properly will rebel against his/her parents, so will a dog! Dogs rebel by chewing, urinating and/or defecating
indoors and constantly barking for hours. Many dog owner are too assiduous and reluctant to investigate the premise of their dogs unmanageable
demeanor. Consequently, the rebellious dog ends up in the animal shelter.

Reasons To Spay Or Neuter

  • 1. Reasons To Spay Or Neuter We love our furry friends and don't want to put them through undue stress. But when it comes to spaying or neutering your pet, your Sanford veterinarian says there are more benefits than risks. The staff at Carolina Veterinary Hospital, P.A. love their little patients and are pet parents themselves, which is why they recommend spaying and neutering your dog or cat to prevent health and behavior challenges down the road. In particular, they say, there are a few top benefits to taking yourpet in for a snip: Veterinarian's Top Reasons to Spay/Neuter 1. It Prevents Cancer A spay or neuter procedure can help your dog or cat live longer. In female pets, spaying reduces the likelihood of deadly uterine and breast cancer, especially when it's ... • 2. The Importance Of Animal Overpopulation Animal overpopulation is one of the most impactful killers of animals, leading to about 2.4 million adoptable shelter–pets being euthanized every year in the United States (Humane Society). Such great numbers of homeless pets calls for terminating actions coming together with preventative measures already in place. One action is adopting pets from a shelter opposed to purchasing from a breeder. On a personal level, I have always adopted pets rather than purchase from breeders, in order to support shelter adoption. One particular pet comes to mind when thinking about my beginning love for shelter adoption, Lucky. Lucky was the first pet I remember having and getting from a shelter. He was a low–interest adoption dog due to his "aggressive" predestined nature ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Lucky showed me, at a young age, the joy of adopting and saving the innocent life of an animal. Adoption also helps fight high chances of purchasing from inhumane breeding environments or even puppy mills. Another preventative step in combating overpopulation is the spaying and neutering of animals. Pursuing a career in Veterinary Medicine through an Animal Science major, I have found in clinic work that many clients struggle with the cost of spaying or neutering their pets. With spay/neuter actions being a major contributor of defeating overpopulation, I seek to solve the issue of client expense struggles. My steps to identifying a solution would be, as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, to offer spay and neuter services at little to no cost for clients in need of financial assistance. I will work in discovering funds to cover these costs and continue support of shelters by housing adoptable pets. Animals may be found and brought in for spay/neuter services, then put up for adoption and/or be placed in fostering programs to help control shelter ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Earth Has Vast Oceans Out of the eight planets in our solar system, Earth is the only planet circling the Sun on which life as we know it could (and does) exist. Unlike any other planet, the Earth has vast oceans with millions of small islands in them, green vegetation, huge landmasses, different topographies, like the mountains, ice caps and deserts, all of which present an amazing variety of color and texture. be the extremely cold Antarctica, where hardy microscopic beings thrive in ponds, tiny wingless insects live in patches of moss and lichen, and plants grow and flower yearly or the extremely warm desert of Sahara plants such as date palms and acacia put down long roots to reach life–sustaining water or often the seeds of flowering plants sprout quickly after a rain and complete their growing cycle and producing seeds in a matter of days, before the soil dries out, one can find some form of life other in almost every ecological niche on earth. From the outer layers of the atmosphere to the deep sea beds at the bottom of the oceans and from the coldest poles to the warmest equator, life thrives here. Till date, no convincingly true evidence of life has been found on any planet. [1] While the Earth has been around for 4.6 billion years and our ancestors have been around for about six million years, the modern form of humans is claimed to have evolved only about 200,000 years ago. The present civilization it is only about six thousand years old, and the industrialization era started in full ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Pet Overpopulation Case Study As I've investigated, the same problem to our city pet overpopulation keeps coming up; unwanted breeding. Animals, domesticated or not mostly act on instinct. When domesticated animals are in heat, their behavior changes as they search for a mate to soothe their instinctual desires. Pet owners usually skip on spaying neutering their pets because of the cost and burden of taking care of a post–surgery animal for two days. Most veterinarians charge over $100 (also depending on the sex, canine/feline, weight, age) for sterilizing an animal but low cost clinics exist, costing up to 30–40% less than a normal vet costs. Unfortunately, the public isn't always aware unless they do extensive google research. As Leslie Irvine states in this case onpet ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many owners are unaware of the consequences caused by not fixing their extended family member, even if they are cautious. As Bob Barker always expressed before ending an episode of "The Price is Right", "Help Control the Pet Population, Have Your Pets Spayed or Neutered." Understanding the importance, the game show host strived to make the audience aware of the growing problem. "Adoption agencies, humane societies, and other shelters should no longer be content to merely serve the traditional function of warehousing unwanted pets. In doing so, they inadvertently contribute to the influx of animals in their shelters" writes D.S. Tuber on the attitudes of most city funded shelters (Tuber 385). It may not reflect every worker's stance, but if more were done such as offering services, maybe the appearance of this negative view would fade. Houston has arranged with SNAP, a mobile clinic that does offer spay/neutering services for free, but there's a big limit on it. SNAP only offers free services "to clients who can show proof of participation in a public assistance program and only accepts a maximum of 24 cats and dogs at a time. Qualifying residents are chosen from a lottery held at 6:30AM on surgery day" (Masilow 2015). This seems quite discouraging to many, probably not even bothering to show up on the chance. A more organized service with appointments and less qualifications should be offered to city residents, especially those on lower ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Dog Sterilization Pros And Cons "He is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog. You are his life, his love, his leader. He will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of his heart. You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion."– Anonymous For those debating the benefits of spaying or neutering your doggie friend, the main point of contention relates to how the dog will handle the process. Will it see you as a threat from now on, will its personality be forever altered, or will it become overly wary of you and the rest of your family? The answer to all of these questions is a resounding no, with most pet experts agreeing that sterilization amongst the pooch population should be actively encouraged. Over a six year period, a single unaltered female and her offspring can produce over 6,000 puppies. Therefore, the act of spaying (the surgical removal of a female dog's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... On an average pet–to–pet basis, dogs are spayed or neutered between six and nine months of age. Due to the different sizes of various dog breeds, many puppies recuperate from surgery quicker than adults: Some can even be sterilized as young as two months old. The pet sterilization process is performed under general anesthesia and, because some dogs suffer small amounts of soreness and discomfort following the surgery, medication may be prescribed by the vet to deal with the pain. Spaying and neutering is the most effective way of helping to manage the overwhelmingly excessive dog population problem that is affecting the nation. In the U.S. alone, seven puppies are born for every human. In 1980, over 23 million animals were sadly euthanized. In 2002, that number significantly dropped to nearly 4.7 million. Pet sterilization successfully lowers the breeding process, meaning that less puppies are adopted or euthanized at pet shelters. Unfortunately, over three million dogs are put to sleep every ... • 6. Persuasive Essay On Adopting Animals As you sit on the floor of your kennel in the animal shelter, you wonder for at least the hundredth time why your previous owners left you. Were they allergic? Did it cost too much to take care of you? As you sit there, considering all the possibilities, the woman who comes to see you almost every day comes into the room. She walks up to you with a kind smile, attaches a leash to your collar, and takes you to the front desk, where she fills out some papers. As she walks to her car with you, you suddenly realize that she is adopting you, that you will finally have another home. People should adopt animals instead of buying them because most animals from shelters are already spayed or neutered, adopting animals instead of buying them could prevent animal overpopulation, and the adopted animal would be getting... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Spaying or neutering an animal is where a part of the reproductive system of an animal is removed, so the animal cannot reproduce. According to http:/ /dogs.lovetoknow.com, the cost of this procedure can be up to $300. And with the costs of buying the animal and everything the animal needs, the final amount of money can get quite expensive. This shows that by adopting an animal that is already spayed or neutered, you could save money. A second reason why people should adopt animals is because it could help with animal overpopulation. If people adopt animals, breeders will have less customers to sell their animals to, so they will breed less animals. Also, most of the animals from breeders will end up in shelters. Based on information from https://www.dosomething.org, 1 out of 10 dogs born will find a permanent home, so why would we breed more animals if the majority of them will live without a home? It would make more sense to give animals homes by adopting them instead of creating more of them who need ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Pet Overpopulation Research Paper As the common saying goes "A dog is a mans best friend". For many of us, we see our pets as innocent, cute, faithful, and fun loving. On the other hand, sadly enough, many dogs and cats do not get a loving, caring and forever home. Instead these animals often times are discarded to shelters or living on the streets after their cute puppy or kitten stage wears off. The growing pet population is an alarming and ongoing problem that could be easily minimized with simple solutions like education, spaying or neutering your pet, and reducing breeding. Now ask yourself this, when you think of a litter of puppies what comes to mind? Most likely you think of fun, roly–poly furballs, clumsy little puppies, and sloppy kisses. I doubt anyone instantly... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With a minimal cost ranging anywhere from free (with assistance programs) to around $120.00 depending on the size and sex of the animal. This procedure is often referred to as "fixing" your pet. Many vets recommend these procedures take place between four and eight months of age. By utilizing this service, a responsible pet owner can ensure their pets can not reproduce. This common and simple procedure not only prevents breeding but also helps prevent many common and transferable infections. When a female animal is spayed the entire reproductive system is removed. This prevents common "headaches" that female dogs get when going in and out of heat (menstruating). When a male animal is neutered both the testicles are removed. Spaying and neutering provide many benefits to pets, it reduces the risk of many types of reproductive cancers in dogs and cats by up to 90%. Fixing your pet also decreases their aggression and dominance towards other animals and usually people. The simple surgical procedure prevents disease and infection by means of reducing biting/puncture wounds due to aggressiveness. Neutering your male dog will decrease his sexual tendency to mount legs or other animals, and aids in reducing the pets tendency to wander off from its home and owner. • 10. Animal Breeding Is Good For The Community And Immoral Many people believe that breeding animals is not good for the community and immoral. This statement is extremely broad. Instead, the statement should read, specifically, that irresponsible animal breeding is bad for the animals as well as the reproduction industry. Knowing the differences between responsible and irresponsible breeding is crucial to understanding the consequences of reckless breeding. Careless breeding creates health and behavioral defects as well as overpopulation. The negative consequences of irresponsible breeding should not only become more mainstream, but also more carefully regulated, which results in the stopping of the practice. Major details differentiate between responsible and reckless breeding. The biggest is the use of healthy, unrelated animals to produce the offspring by responsible breeders. Contrary to this, it is common that irresponsible breeders will use a technique called inbreeding. Inbreeding is when two animals, who are closely related, reproduce which causes serious health defects. An example of irresponsible breeding is the use of puppy mills which then sell to the public and pet stores. It is strongly advised that people do not buy pets from stores because it promotes irresponsible breeding. Trustworthy breeders usually are self–made and use their own pets to produce offspring knowing they are healthful. Not only do they use their own healthy pets, they make sure that a good partner is used which results in healthy, well–mannered ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Domesticated animals such as these permeate American culture, from the Puppy Bowl to the ongoing dog vs cat debate on Facebook posts and Internet forums. But although pets seem to be everywhere, millions of them every year slip through the cracks, winding up on the streets or vying for limited space in an animal shelter. The Modern Plague Of Overpopulation "Unlike plagues of the dark ages or contemporary diseases we do not understand, the modern plague of overpopulation is soluble by means we have discovered and with resources we possess. What is lacking is not sufficient knowledge of the solution but universal consciousness of the gravity of the problem and education of the billions who are its victim." This was said by Martin Luther King, Jr on May 5, 1966. If this was said almost 49 years ago by one of the greatest leaders of American history, why hasn't the issue ofoverpopulation been solved yet? Simply because we lack the universal consciousness of the serious issues overpopulation bring and the education required on how to prevent it. There will be conflicts and wars, environmental degradation and climate change. The global crude birth rate from 2005–2010 is 20.3 children per 1000 people. Ehrlich put together a chart detailing the estimated population history since 8000 B.C. According to the chart the estimated human population in 1930 A.D. was 2 billion people, by 1975 "a mere 45 years later" the estimated population was more than double that at around 4 billion people (6). Arthur McCormack says that "high birth rates and low death rates cannot continue without causing excessive rates of population growth that are detrimental to the quality of human life" (9–10). In his view the way to achieve a balance in the global population is to find a way to get birth rates to be almost if not entirely equal to death rates (10). A feat that is not easy to achieve. Essay on The Devastating Effects of Overpopulation The Devastating Effects of Overpopulation Imagine living in a world where darkness reigns continually due to a dense cover of toxic air pollution which blocks most sunlight. Starvation and death from the lack of energy resources is widespread and the people who have not perished yet live packed together, in overcrowded communities surrounded by waste and filth. This grotesque picture of future life on earth may seem far–fetched but with the continued rise in population and the abuse of our planet by billions, this scenario may be closer to reality then previously thought. The Earth will soon not be able to sustain life if the population continues to escalate. With the constantly rising numbers of humans, vital resources ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As a result of this, he predicts a drastic population decrease due to insufficient resources to sustain human life in the near future (Daily 3). There are two main contributors to overpopulation; a decrease in the death rate and a rise in life expectancy. Professor of Microbiology, John B. Hall claims that if we value human culture and a high standard of living in general, there is evident need for an end to further growth of the Earth's population (Hall 67). A study done by the National Center for Health Statistics – Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in 1995, reported that in the United States there is a continuing decease in death rates and an increase in life expectancy from birth. The decrease in mortality is due to preventative technology and treatments of major health problems such as cancer and heart disease. The mortality rate was estimated to be at 503.9 per 100,000 deaths annually (Mortality 1). This analysis also found that at birth the life expectancy was at a record high of 75.8 years (1). The increase in the world's growth, due to the increasing life expectancy and lower death rate, are signs of a society's overall level of affluence and quality of life. Some factors pointing toward this rise in affluence are increased food supplies and distribution, better nutrition, improvements in medical and public health technology (such as immunizations and ... According to Humane Society of the United States, anywhere from three to four million dogs and cats are euthanized in the United States each year (Rogelberg E. A. 2006, p. 332). The overpopulation of abandoned animals in shelters has become a major problem. It affects not only the shelters budget, but also animals themselves and our community. "As of 2011, it is estimated that there are over seventy–eight million dogs owned in the United States, only twenty–one percent of which were adopted. Over $2.13 billion were spent in the U.S. market in 2010 on live animal sales" (Albany Law Review, 380). A lot of those pets end up on the streets, or in shelters. Pet stores should work with shelters providing community with evidence of animals being mistreated in puppy mills and that animal overpopulation is a problem. Shelters could cooperate with pet stores, who in exchange would provide private behavior lessons for adopted animals that are having a hard time adjusting to a new family. • 32. Persuasive Essay On Overpopulation There are many issues today that pose a threat to our way of life. Overpopulation is a serious problem that will eventually have an extremely negative effect on our countries, and our planet. The problems that arise due to overpopulation could even prove to a fatal epidemic that will eventually wipeout the entire human race. Oftentimes this issue is overlooked due to lack of knowledge and understanding of the subject; or, simply because most of us are so blessed that we are not affected first hand by the problems it is causing this very second. Overpopulation, in my belief, is an enormously serious global issue that should be identified, analyzed, and controlled immediately. The term overpopulation literally means that the number of things (in this case: humans) that depend on resources for survival is significantly larger than the amount of resources available to them. Today our planet is experiencing the effects of multiplying citizens because of the obstacles the environment is being forced to take on. Many believe that Earth is presently occupied by too many people. Year after year thepopulation multiplies faster and faster. Presently, there are about 7 billion people occupying this planet, and by the middle of the approaching century the U.N. predicts that the count will reach 9.4 billion. Both developed and developing countries are at risk of the dangerous problems that overpopulation can and will create. This relates to "In defense of the Everglade Pythons" By ... • 33. Animal Cruelty Research Paper To Spay or Not to Spay As a pet owner, we strive to make the best decisions for our furry friends, as we are their only advocates. They depend on us for everything they need to survive. There are so many decisions we must make on their behalf. What kind of food should we feed them? When is it time to see a veterinarian? These are all choices we make to ensure they live healthy and happy lives. One of the most controversial decisions we are faced with is whether or not to spay or neuter our pets. Some people feel that it is an unnecessary surgery, while others see it as a means to an end for pet overpopulation. I personally feel that in order to make the best decision, we need to be sure we have the correct facts. First we will cover the topic of pet overpopulation. It is estimated by The Humane Society of the United States that approximately six to eight million pets are brought in to animal shelters every year. Sadly, more than half of these pets are euthanized due to overpopulation. That means that these pets are being "killed" purely because there isn't enough room to house them. Point Two– "Too many dogs and not enough homes" –Liz Palika 1.Animal shelters around the country are overwhelmed with the amount of dogs that are brought in. This causes a vast number of unadoptable animals to be euthanized. ASPCA states that approximately 3.9 million are dogs enter shelters nationwide every year, almost 1 out of 3 dogs will be euthanized. 2.The overpopulation problem is worsened by the existence of puppy mills. The ASPCA estimates "there could be as many as 10,000 puppy mills in the United States." Puppy mills create excess supply of dogs when there are many dogs that are needing homes in shelters. 3.Owner responsibility is essential to controlling the population of animals which can be decreased through spaying and neutering. Unfortunately, only 10% of the animals received by shelters have been spayed or neutered. *Transition Overpopulation of domesticated animals is to blame on the overflow of animals that end up at shelters which causes a great amount of animals to be

II.The best way we can help solve the issue is by getting our own pets spayed or neutered. a.Spay is the term for female animals while neutering is used for male animals. Both are surgical procedures to remove the reproductive organs of the animal. By performing these procedures, our pets cannot contribute to the problem because they cannot reproduce. According to Northwest Spay and Neuter, if every pet was fixed then the overpopulation problem would be fix in less than 10 years. If we put it into these terms is it easier to understand: just one female dog and her puppies can result in 67,000 dogs in six years, and one female cat and her kittens can lead to 370,000 cats being born in seven years. b.There are several benefits to having your own pet spayed or neutered besides helping solve this crisis. The benefits include reducing the risk of some of the most common types of cancers, making it likelier for animals to live a longer and healthier life, and nixing aggression problems. By way of a newspaper ad, an unnamed narrator meets a telepathic gorilla, named Ishmael, who had put up the ad to find a pupil with a desire to save the world. Spurred by his benefactor's obsession with Nazi Germany, Ishmael imparts on the narrator what he knows best: captivity (Quinn 24). Ishmael claims humans of what are considered civilized cultures are captives of a story that in turn keeps the world captive. Researchers of the University of New Mexico found the time of the extinction coincided more with colonization by humans than climate change and that hunter–gatherers, such as the Clovis people, hunted the mammals for food (Lyons et al 339, 351–252; Wroe et al 320). Although it could be argued that they were Leavers by not exterminating their competition, they could have instead been hunter–gatherer Takers believing all large mammals were something to be conquered and owned as agricultural Takers view the soil of the world. Despite this romanticization of the hunter–gatherer lifestyle, however, Ishmael isn't urging people to become hunter–gatherers to save the world nor is he saying all hunter–gatherers are Leavers. Ishmael says settlement–and, by extent, agriculture–is a biological adaptation, which can compete with other adaptations and, thus, is "subject to the laws of competition" (Quinn 135). If hunter–gatherer Takers can exist, agricultural Leavers could too, or as Ishmael bluntly puts it, "The Leaver lifestyle isn't about hunting and gathering, it's about letting the rest of the community live" (Quinn 250). As Leaver groups typically find a lifestyle that suits them, Takers could invent a new lifestyle, incorporating agriculture and settlement, to avoid the destruction of the world. The research findings revealed that the majority of respondents (69%) agreed that its uncomfortable for companion animals to be intact.
