Examples Of Light In Night By Elie Wiesel
Hope is what is given to all at one point in someone's life where all seems to be lost. Throughout the
book Night Elie Wiesel, the author, expresses his experience during the Holocaust. The book allows
us to understand how a horrible tragedy causes hope to be lost as well as faith. Elie Wiesel reveals
his theme through the use of dark and light. The light presented in his book expresses the good seen
throughout this tragedy. Darkness on the other hand shows all evil and tragedy that had to be lived
or seen. One of the most important themes in Night is, when hope seems to be given it doesn't take
long until it disappears. The theme is illustrated by the use of light and dark. Light describes the
hope and faith in Jews while dark describes evil ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At first Elie explains how the Jews were all together when they heard they would be evacuated from
their homes. Once the news was heard, "We felt this was not a bad thing; we were entirely among
ourselves" (Wiesel 11). Even after the bad news the Jews remained with faith. Everyone saw the
good that came from the bad situation and everyone had hope that all would be fine. Elie expresses
light in a tragic situation by showing how Jews had faith and hope. It isn't long until they're all in
concentration camp with death all around them. At one point Elie explains how a young boy loses
his life after being hanged with 2 others. Elie writes, "The two men were no longer alive. Their
tongues were hanging out, swollen and bluish. But the third rope was still breathing... 'For God's
sake, where is God?' And from within me, I heard a voice answer: 'Where He is? This is where –
hanging here from these gallows'" (Wiesel 64–65). This horrifying image of a young child hung
reveals a great darkness. The quote expresses how faith is lost once Elie states that God is hung
which refers to him being gone. Overall it is shown that when hope or faith is given it is easily taken
away. This is revealed through the use of light and

Gene And Finny Relationship In A Separate Peaceby John...
It's hard to classify Gene and Finny relationship as friends in the book, A Separate Peaceby John
Knowles. Gene and Finny relationship is hard to classify as friends because they changedramatically
throughout the book. There are many reasons why they were friends in thebeginning of the book,
and not friends towards the end of the book, A Separate Peace. In thebeginning of the book A
Separate Peace they approved each other and did many activitiestogether, but all that change
towards the end of the story. The ending of the book A SeparatePeace changed my response on if I

becausehe hurt and injured Finny, Gene lost trust because he doesn't trust that Finny is good enough

Summary Of Questioning Evangelism By Randy Newman
In Randy Newman's book, Questioning Evangelism, he focuses on one main topic. That topic is how
to use questions to spread the Good News of the Bible. He explains that these questions are
extremely important and force people to think in ways they normally wouldn't on their own. A big
chunk of this book is the author giving a "principle" and then following it by an example in the
format of dialogue. Questioning Evangelism is split into 3 main parts. These three categories include
"Why Ask Questions", "What Questions are People Asking", and "Why Aren't Questions and
Answers Good Enough". In part one, "Why Ask Questions," Newman lays to foundation for his
reasoning. He gives clear examples on what to say in certain situations or scenarios ... Show more

It would be beneficial to lay a foundation of the gospel down for all readers in order to expose all
the readers to the Truth, especially to those who may not be Christian, but are still required to read
the book. Without this foundation, it is hard for a non–Christian to apply the things learned from this
book and apply it to daily life. Another concern or observation would have to be that this book didn't
go in depth on evangelism, Yes, it talked about how to start conversation with non–believers, but it
never really went past that. It would be helpful for Newman to go in depth on things he says after
they get the conversation going. The majority of the examples in this book focus on how to start
evangelism and less on how to maintain their attention and maintain the overall discussion. Asking
questions may open the door to the sharing the gospel, but that is not going to reveal to them the
complete Truth of the

Farenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
"The books are to remind us what fools we are" (Bradbury, Fahrenheit 451). Book Burning has been
around ever since books have. All throughout history from biblical to modern time book have been
burned. Rarely are books burned for no reason, some of the most common reasons books are burned
for religiously or politically. However is burning books good or bad for society? Whether if book
burning is good or bad depends on how you see the reason they are being burned. There are many
ways that book burning is good but many that are bad. In some ways book burning can be good. As
appointed in Ray Bradbury's novel Fahrenheit 451 many of the characters point out that books
consist of the real facts along with the truth about life that are good and bad. When somebody burns
a book in their eyes and opinion it could be a good reason while to other it can be reason that makes
no logical sense. Some reasons certain people may see it fit to burn books is because the books in
their eyes are offensive or against their views, beliefs and values. In this case of book burning the
person or group of people that are offended by this book are no longer offended and then can
therefore live better socially because they're no longer offended or embarrassed. This can range from
religious books to older books about times of inequality of two types of people or nationality.
Another reason would be because someone who is in charge of a group of people or even a country
they would like to control and

Becoming A Book Speech
When I was asked to choose a book for our "Becoming a Book" speech, my first thought was to do
the Bible. Then I thought that me doing the Bible could step on some toes, so I chose my next
favorite work of literature. I chose to give this speech about the book If You're Reading This by
Trent Reedy. I really believe that this book should be cherished because it gives us a different
perspective on the struggles of being in high school, and what it is like to be part of a family that has
lost someone in the military. Now, I have not personally lost anyone in the military, but I do
sympathize with people that have, mostly because I have a cousin now that is in the military, and it
would hurt our family to lose him. Let me give you a little background on the book first. Mike is a
fifteen year old boy in high school, when he begins ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One being the struggles of high school, and relationships. If You're Reading This gives you the
perspective of a male in a high school, whereas most books (at least that I read), are from a female
point of view. We see what it is like for a guy, including all of the social pressure to be good at
football, party, and have the best girls with him. We see his frustration, his joy, his tragedies, and his
triumphs. It also helps us see what we may have coming for us soon, as well as what we already
have. Even further though, we see all of these things from a young man that is without a father, and
not only did he lose his father, but he lost his father in war. During the book, the anniversary of his
father's death comes, and we really see the struggles, and what people really go through when they
lose a family member, especially in war. Mike and his mother are heavily affected by this, because
they knew what is was like before his absence, and now with his absence, they know there is
something missing, but something that they will never get

Diary Of Anne Frank Essay
The holocaust is a sad event that happened in history. There were Jews who lost their lives because
their religion was seen as a dangerous race to society. Many Jews lost their lives do to that
judgement. This talks and goes on in the book The Diary Of Anne Frank. In the book the girl Anne
Frank is very calm and collected in this time she said "In spite of everything, I still believe people
are really good at heart. I believe that the quote is true. I say this because in the book they all had
their days were they were all upset or sad, but other than that they all had a little happiness in them.
In this play of Anne's diary I have noticed very many acts of kindness that makes Anne's quote "In
spite of everything, I still believe people are really good at heart" seem true. Anne did a lot of kind
things throughout this play but I say that when Anne got everyone presents for hanukkah stuck out
the most to me. She got everyone presents despite the hatefulness she may receive from some of the
people. "It isn't new. It's one that you've done, but I rubbed it all out, and if you wait a while and
forget you can do it all over again" This goes to show that people are good at heart because they can
forgive and forget about the bad that has happened. Anne took her time at night to make everyone
their presents. She ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

What Is The Theme Of Lost Horizon
James Hilton wrote Lost Horizon in 1933, and it was an immediate success, selling millions of
copies, influencing President Roosevelt to name what's now Camp David Shangri–La, and Frank
Capra, a hot director after an Oscar sweep with It Happened One Night in 1934, made a movie of
Lost Horizon in 1937. The book also makes a big impression at first reading, especially for younger
readers (which is when I first read it, many years ago now), who are captivated by the atmosphere of
mystery and mysticism.
The story of Lost Horizon is simple: a group of travellers are stranded in the Himalayas and they
encounter a remote monastery named Shangri–La and the wonderful people who live there. Before
that point, Hilton includes a prologue and two lengthy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He exhibits a lethal (to the reader's interest, that is) mix of indecision and introspection. I quote at
length from the section immediately before he decides to leave:
And he knew, too, that his mind dwelt in a world of its own, Shangri–La in microcosm, and that this
world also was in peril. For even as he nerved himself, he saw the corridors of his imagination twist
and strain under impact; the pavilions were toppling; all was about to be in ruins. He was only partly
unhappy, but he was infinitely and rather sadly perplexed. He did not know whether he had been
mad and was now sane, or had been sane for a time and was now mad again. (216–7)
Partly unhappy! I've seldom read about the internal life of a character that was so boring in its
complexity. Hamlet may have waffled, but at least Shakespeare set that in the context of the revenge
tragedy, an eventful genre. Part of my annoyance with Conway was his presence in an adventure
story gone awry; Conway is a symbol of the way the two halves of the book don't support each
other. Shangri–La is an interesting place to visit, but not with the expectation of an edge–of–the–seat

Similarities Between Washington McNeely by Edgar Lee...
Many authors are inspired to write by other things like a special thing in their day or sometimes
other writings or poems. "Washington Mcneely" by Edgar Lee Masters and Our Town by Thornton
Wilder themes because Our Town was inspired by many of Edgar Lee Masters' poems. Both pieces
of work share the themes of death and time, a character similarities between Mrs. Webb and
Washington McNeely. Two themes the poem has is death and time. The poem displays the theme of
time, because it starts out telling the story of a man who is from, and raises his children in, a noble
and rich family. As his children get older, 2 of them died, and the others, to quote the poem "all were
gone, or broken–winged or devoured by life". He had lost, essentially all of his children, and as we
find out his wife. The poem shows how he went from a great man with a happy family, to a lost man
who is all alone. The next theme the poem shows is death. Death is all throughout the poem. It starts
with a man living a good life, but as it goes on his first child leaves, his next 2 children die, and the
next 3 become incredibly unsocial and that's not even it! Near the end his wife, the mother of all 6
children, dies. "I sat under my cedar tree, till ninety years were tolled." The poem ends with the man
dying, after everything he had lost; he died in his favorite place to be, under his cedar tree. The book
also displays the same themes as the poem. The book, Our Town shows the theme of time, because

The Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet is a very informative book that carries on an important
message to the world. This is a satisfying and beautifully writing Novel that talks about the value of
human being between individuals with a beautiful heart. That knows the important of life. It is a
book that includes bitter and sweet at the same time, because Henry lost his friend and this loved
one due to some type of hate that came from their ancestries. I strongly believe that this book will
delight and change some individuals' thoughts about rice and who are still stuck on discriminating of
others. It carries on sweet memories, love, and friendship that was lost for a quit and found. I am
sure this novel will be best suited for a multicultural

Similarities Between Paradise Lost And Paradise Lost
Paradise Lost comparison to three epics of antiquity There are many ways to compare and contrast
Paradise Lost with the three other epics of antiquity. The epics are Paradise Lost, Aeneid, The Epic
Gilgamesh, and The Iliad. The most obvious difference is era. Paradise Lost is an epic poem from
the 17th century and is written in blank verse which is the most modern phrasing method. According
to an article on Enotes, out of the other three epics, the Iliad and Aeneid came from the same
dactyllic family. ("Compare Milton's Paradise Lost"). Meanwhile The Epic Gilgamesh is more old–
fashioned in its verse Between the four books there are a variety of differences. These differences
include subject matter, format, different symbiotic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many others disagree and see Satan in a more sympathetic sense. Although he is the antagonist, his
motives are very real and his anger is genuinely human. His motivations are ambitious and relatable.
In classical epics, the journey is the prime motivation for the heroes to literally demonstrate their
heroism. Paradise Lost is more of an inward journey. In fact, the main journey is taken, which is
Satan's fall from heaven, has occurred before the action takes place. So instead, we have an epic of
plans , motivations, of ambitions; the climactic actions are mundane in comparison to the bloodshed
of Achilles, for example. Paradise Lost employs a dual narrative and remains focus on the two
interweaving stories. Classic epics give a great amount of attention to "ancillary character" and
myths. ("Compare Milton's Paradise Lost"). In the Iliad, the rage of Diomedes is meant to show to
battle and bring glory to a side character, yet not giving any insight to the main story of Achilles
revenge. This is meant to depict multiple heroes. Finally, heroism. Classical epics see heroism as an
act which includes defeating the enemy with cunning wisdom and bloodshed. Paradise Lost portrays
heroism in a silent servitude and willing acceptance. When having prior knowledge of The Aeneid
while reading Paradise Lost, it is almost difficult to disregard the parallels which Milton draws,
according to Hannah Smith. ("Milton's Paradise Lost and Virgil's Aeneid") Some of the most
obvious

Margarita Engle's Influence On Cuban Culture
Margarita Engle is a Cuban American who grew up in Los Angeles but spent many of her summers
in Cuba. As of now she lives in California and trains her search and rescue dog. Margarita Engle
wrote children's books and influenced Cuban culture through her books including Drum Dream Girl,
When you Wander, and Surrender Tree. Margarita Engle's book Drum Dream Girl promoted Cuban
Culture and gender equality. The book is about a girl who is in a society who looks down upon girl
drummers and was intended for boys. But when they hear her play they accept her passion for
playing the drums. "On an island of music In a city of drum beats The drum dream girl Dreamed."
This quote means the girl was passionate about playing the drums and how the Cuban culture
accepts people for who they are and her culture also values music. I feel it also promoted gender
equality because it is written in a culture that views men more superior than girls but then they value
them after.. Margarita Engle's book When you Wander helped kids understand what to do when lost.

Tender Is the Night by F. Scott Fitzgerald
Tender is the Night by F. Scott Fitzgerald is a dissolution story full of loss, loneliness and isolation.
It is an extremely intricate, thick and detailed book. Tender is the Night is a book about the adult life
of a charismatic and personable psychiatrist named Dick Diver and his marriage to his wife Nicole
Diver who is also his patient. He meets a young hollywood actress, named Rosemary Hoyt, one
summer and has an affair with her. This affair begins his slow decline to his downfall and eventual
loss of his reputation, career and family. For its many themes and strong dynamic characters, I have
found Tender is the Night to be a good, satisfying book to read. The main theme conveyed
throughout this novel is that although love brings happiness at times, love is destructive.
Fitzgerald's principle idea he wants to convey is that life is unpredictable, your hopes, dreams, and
plans can change in a second and love is the main reason. Fitzgerald aims to show, that these
changes are not for the better. Fitzgerald presents this ideal through Dick Diver. Dick Diver's goal is
to become a world–renowned psychiatrist. That all changes the day he meets Nicole. He gives it all
up for love, devoting his life to take care of her. After 6 years or so, Dick meets Rosemary and falls
"'in love with (her)", "He knew that what he was now doing marked a turning point in his life",
damaging his seemingly perfect marriage (74, 91). After losing Rosemary, losing love, Dick turns to
drinking and

Why Do People Are Really Good At Heart
"In spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at heart." Anne verbalized these
words in her diary ingress. It was dated July 1944, several months before she perished in a
concentration camp. Could you imagine being cooped up like Anne and her family was for about
two and a half years? They were going through many difficult situations and three points to support
is that she was always positive and rarely negative. Anne also never lost hope, and she had good
people surrounding her with good thoughts to keep her going through this tough situation. The first
point is that is never lost hope that she would get out soon. Anne made many varieties of
verbalizations in her diary because it was what she was celebrating at the time because they couldn't
run around and play from six in the morning till 8 in the afternoon. All she had was Kitty to list
down her feelings and to her, that was the best. In her diary, she expressed that, " We're going to buy
lots of games." This verbalization can be found in edgenuity lesson one, in the instruction on slide

Conflict In Paradise Lost
Unlike the Biblical account of the fall in the Book of Genesis, with his epic poem, Paradise Lost,
John Milton adds a lot of detail about the complete story of Man, the beginning of Satan, his rise
and Man's Fall. Although the ideas for Paradise Lost came from a few pages in the Book of Genesis,
Milton's account kept readers wondering what was going to happen next. Because he was going
against the church already with Paradise Lost, it was more intriguing for him to take the same ideas
in the Bible and extend them into more detail, making Satan look like the Hero and succeeding at
what he wanted to do. Satan the perfect angel banished from nothing to the pits of Hell, with no
chance of return, conjures up a plan to get revenge, building a legacy ... Show more content on

In Paradise Lost, God is almost emotionless or aloof; he embodies pure reason and pure justice, and
every response he gives seems to be cold. In Genesis God is wise and known as the creator and is
more the narrator of what is happening than in Milton's epic. Also He is referred to as Lord God,
instead of God, like Milton refers to Him. So, in close the start and fall Man to summarize the
creation and reason for human nature is "God gave Man free will, from Man's free will, sin and
death came into the world." Paradise Lost was about Adam and Eve, how they came to be created,
the fall of Satan and his journey to get back at God by corrupting Adam and Eve. The main plot of
this took place in God's creation called the Garden of Eden. Paradise Lost is similar to the book of
Genesis because its story comes from the main pages of Genesis, chapters one through four. My
thesis is: While the Book of Genesis portrays Satan as an evil antagonist, Milton's Paradise Lost
presents him as a more sympathetic character. Perhaps not a hero, but an anti–hero. An anti–hero is
someone who lacks the attributes of a hero, such as courage or being morally

First Men In The Moon Comparison Essay
Everyone has at least one good friend in their life. Unfortunately, some of us lose that friend far too
soon, and sometimes to an enemy. In both the science fiction book, The First Men in the Moon by
H.G. Wells, and the action–thriller book, The Lost Symbol, by Dan Brown, this exact thing happens
to both protagonists. In the First Men in the Moon, Mr. Bedford loses his friend Cavor to the
Selenites, a species which lives on the moon and seems to be a threat towards both of their survival.
In The Lost Symbol, Langdon loses his friend and top tier Mason Peter Solomon, to Mal'akh, a
revenge seeking Mason who wants to kill off the Solomon Family. The similarity between these
books is that both protagonists lose one of their closest friends and spend a good part of the book
looking for them. A difference regarding this is how Cavor is not found by Bedford, although he ...

Ignorance In Frankenstein
Savage and Pitiful
Can a murder be pitiful while being hatred by other people? The tragic in Frankenstein made a
monster isolated from the world. The monster who lost all his hopes and means to live, whom later
decides to revenge against his creator; whom shall never will be happy as before will start his
journey to chase this unambiguous monster, and they shall never be seen again. The shifts in the
story changed the reality of the monster, as the confused, lonely, and savage monster becomes
educated through works like "Paradise Lost", but his kind of education is different from others,
education is the most cause of the tragic in the story. Another important shift of the story that turned
the Monster to such a heartless being is the creator himself, the happiness of Victor Frankenstein is

Jake also at times seems to realize how bad his life is, but then never regrets it. He is in love with
Brett Ashley, but she is always with other people, including Robert Cohn, which makes Jake jealous.
This jealousy turns to anger when Jake gets into a fight with Robert and is then knocked out.
Jake relates to the other characters only superficially because he only looks at what he can get from
them. Jake wants Brett Ashley so that when he gets older he'll have companionship. Jake makes fun
of Robert Cohn to make himself look better than he is by putting someone else down. Jake also uses
Bill Gorton just to keep himself busy and not get bored. Near the end of the book Jake states, "Next
morning I tipped every one a little too much at the hotel to make more friends...I did not tip the
porter more than I should because I did not think I would ever see him again. I only wanted a few
good French friends in Bayonne to make me welcome in case I should come back..." This statement
show what friends really meant to Jake. They were people that would be some type of service to
him.
Unfortunately, Jake does not undergo a change throughout the book. Jake stays the same uncaring,
selfish person from the beginning where Jake said he never thinks about how much he's wasted his
life to Robert Cohn, until the last line where Brett Ashley says, "We could have had such a damned
good time together," and

Plutarch's Influence On Frankenstein
In the story Frankenstein, Victor's creation is exposed to four different books that influence his view
on human life. These four books are John Milton's Paradise Lost, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's
The Sorrows of Young Werther, Plutarch's Plutarch's Lives of the Noble Greeks and Romans, and
Constantin–Francois Volney's Ruins of Empires. All of these books influenced the creature to
become who he became, however I believe that Goethe's The Sorrows of Young Werther and
Volney's Ruins of Empires actually did not have a negative affect on the creature. However I would
change the books Paradise Lost and Plutarch's Lives of the Noble Greeks and Romans into books
that would hopefully give the creature a better influence. The first book I would replace ... Show

Paradise Lost focuses on the failures of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, which can also
translate to the failures of us as humans because they decided to eat the fruit. This would not leave a
good impression of humanity on the creature, because he does not know anything about humanity
yet other than the fact that they seem to hate him because of his appearance. On the other hand, Life
of Pi focuses on humanity's ability to persevere, even during the hardest situations. The creature
which is ostracized by society, can be compared to Pi who left all alone on a boat after being
orphaned by a ship wreck. Pi was lost at sea for 227 days with a 450–pound Bengal tiger and to stay
alive in that sort of situation requires amazing perseverance. If the creature had read this book and
learned more about perseverance through Pi's example, I believe that he would have been able to
persevere through the ostracization, and wouldn't have been so driven by his hatred for his own
appearance. Even though society may have rejected him, if the creature read Life of Pi, he would
have learned to persevere through the tough times and maybe would have come to be loved by
people because of his

John Milton: A View of Evil vs. Ignorance Essay
When a person hears Satan, a streak of fear, and the thought of evil arises. People fear Satan, and
think of him as evil, but in John Milton's Paradise Lost, he displays a thought of the Father being the
evil being, and Satan a tragic hero. In Paradise Lost, Book 1 and 2, the minor areas where God is
shown, He is displayed as hypocritical. He contradicts himself by creating the humans to be of free
will, but when Satan displays free will, he is shunned. Satan could be described in many terms, and
by many people, but all can be disputed. According to my sources, Satan is displayed as the hero,
while God is the evil deity, and Milton was wrong for writing Him as so. In this essay, I will show
my thoughts on the subject of Satan as an evil ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
"Satan is a portrait of rebellion gone wrong, but not of the wrongs of rebellion" (Bryson). Cromwell
later diminished, and Charles II was bestowed to King of England, while Satan is still trying to
destroy all of God's creations, and diminish their good moral, and qualities. According to Woodman,
"Evil, as presented by Milton, may be defined as a rebellion against the hierarchy of God's
creation.", but in my opinion, evil is being immoral and vicious. Satan could be described as evil,
but because of his reasons to be evil towards God, I don't really believe he is evil. He is a spoiled,
broken child that wants to get back at the deity that wronged him. His entire existence is to seek
revenge on God for throwing him and his apostles out of heaven, and shunning them into Hell.
Satan just doesn't come across as evil in Paradise Lost and Milton describes him as a hero that tried
to conquer an evil tyrant. Satan has evil qualities in our stories today, but in Book 1 and 2 of
Paradise Lost, he is not considered evil. When a person compares what society thinks of Satan
today, and how Milton wrote Satan in Paradise Lost, he is considerably not evil. God is described as
the evil one in the story, because of how he allows mankind to have free will, but punishes all who
displays free will. In the later books of Paradise Lost, Adam and Eve were punished because of

The Monster In Mary Shelley's Frankenstein
In the novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, the creature is introduced to four readings that

Each of these books stand for power and strength in the individual despite the physical and
emotional challenges they face. When the Creature finds the book, it fills his head with wild ideas.
Such as, "As I read, however, I applied much personally to my own feelings and condition" (Shelley
114). This is explaining how he became the monster that he is portrayed as. Throughout
Frankenstein, the monster is sad because he cannot read, write, or communicate with others, so
when he finds the book collection he cannot wait to read every single one. When the monster kills
Henry Clerval, he makes it seem like Henry tried to attempt suicide by drowning him. This is taken
right out of Sorrows of Young Werther because of the boyfriend drowning himself. Another writing
that was influential to Shelley's Frankenstein was Paradise Lost by John Milton. This is said to be
the most influential piece of literature that the Creature was based on.Paradise Lost is an epic poem
about a version of the creation story. In Frankenstein, the creature and Frankenstein meet on the top
of Mont Blanc and the Creature starts to tell his life story from the time that he was abandoned. He

The Power And Lure Of Satan
The Power and Lure of Satan
Although the fall of man is written in the bible, no other author has thoroughly written thoughts
which have resounded in the minds of those that have read John Milton's
"Paradise Lost". Milton's epic tale of Paradise Lost has become biblical folklore and even Christians
who have not fully read the Bible rely upon the representations and indulgences that Milton
presented through his embellishments of fact. Milton's paradise lost is considered by critics to be
one of the greatest literary cannons of all time and is undoubtedly a source of debate with no
foregone conclusion other than who's side is Milton really on, God's or Satan's.

(Milton and the Critics)
Milton's depiction of Satan has fascinated critics and scholars in excess of a century and will
continue to baffle and fascinate for years to come. Milton's rendition of Satan; or the Devil in
Christian tradition undoubtedly is a rebel who seeks divine existence and thus, this has endeared him
to his subjects who have an open mind to how Milton portrayed him. Though Satan is nothing short
of an intellectual in Milton's "Paradise Lost" it truly could be theologically misrepresenting and
misleading but serves to prove fascinating in "Paradise Lost"...
"Paradise Lost" on its face leads one to believe that contrary to the teaching of the bible, God is
unjust and paints a very clear picture form the onset that Satan was in all reality one of the good
guys who had just been undermined and done wrong by God. (Paradise Lost Book III) The
charismatic nature of Satan tends to lend itself to one almost feeling sorry for him due to the trials
and tribulations which he has to endure due to the unfair God. The articulate writing of Milton's
when Satan is the speaker allows one to be drawn into the web of Satan unknowingly.
Milton writes: "the heavens and earth; Rose out of Chaos" (Paradise Lost Book I, 9–10) and in a
manner of few words mirrors the bible where in it states: Therefore, Milton mirrors the bible

Milton's Theodicy
John Milton is one of the most influential writers in history, with his most famous work being his
epic poem, Paradise Lost. Milton wrote this text because he truly believed that he was special in
God's eyes and was sent to tell the story of the first sin by humans. Paradise Lost, chronicles Satan's
temptation of Adam and Eve and their expulsion from Eden. Milton was a great writer and a devout
christian, which can be shown in Paradise Lost. This text tells the story of man's first sin against
God by the eating of the fruit from the Tree of Knowledge. Satan tempted Adam and Eve to eat this
fruit. Milton is basically retelling the story of the book of Genesis, chapter three. Milton gives a very
detailed account as to what he believed happened ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
God made humans in his own image and likeness, without any flaws. Raphael even states, "God
made thee perfect." God created man perfectly, but he gave man free will. God gave Adam and Eve
the ability to resist evil through free will. Free will also allows for Adam and Eve to give into the
temptation of evil. God even states in Book three, that he created man, "Just and right, sufficient to
have stood, though free to fall." Milton, again, is attempting to show that because God gave man the
ability to resist temptation, he is not responsible for the fall of humans. Adam and Eve made the
choice to eat the fruit of the forbidden tree even though they knew they should. They had the
capabilities to resist this temptation, but they allowed themselves to fall. So, Milton's theodicy in his
epic poem, Paradise Lost, brings up the question of free will, along with asserting God as being all
powerful and good. Milton wanted to show that God is not responsible for the fall of humans as he
gave man all the necessary tools to resist evil in this epic poem. Paradise Lost, though, is perhaps
the most famous epic poem ever written. Milton believed himself to be truly special in God's eye,
which is probably why he wanted to show God's innocence in the fall of humanity. John Milton is
truly one of the greatest and most influential writers in the history of the

John Milton 's Paradise Lost
John Milton's Paradise Lost is a paradox of morality and character definitions. After reading
multiple articles, the largest concerning topic was the hero status of an inherently evil character. The
issue lies within defining what a hero is and is not in terms of epic poetry. John Milton's refusal to
clarify a hero shows this paradox he has created is a something that he meant to achieve. According
to Mary Nyquist in The Father 's Word/Satan 's Wrath, "The text seems here not just to invite, but to
provoke interpretation, the dictatorial arbitrariness of the utterance being noticeably amplified by the
blank silence of Paradise Lost on its meaning..." (191). Satan 's fatal flaws, ever present inner
struggles, his determination to wage war against an adversary, and the general defining
characteristics at the time are supporting evidence for claiming Satan to be the hero.
The issue of defining a hero stems from the different educated branches studying the work. A
Christian Theologian's definition will be the opposite of Satan's character. That being said the
working definition of an epic hero for this paper will be the seven most common traits found among
claimed epic heroes. The first is noble birth, followed by capable of deeds of great strength and
courage, great warrior, travels over a vast setting, national heroism, a perceived fall from grace, and
faces supernatural and internal struggles. Not all of these requirements must be met, but most would
agree that a majority can

Fair Use Case Summary
The Fair Use Doctrine
Case Summary Libraries have been transitioning to the digitalization of literature for preservation
and distribution purposes. When a group of libraries gave works to HathiTrust for digital
conversion, tension from the owners of the work began to rise. The Authors Guild, an organization
that has been supporting writers and their rights since 1912, filed a case against HathiTrust to protect
intellectual property. Google formed HathiTrust, an organization that the libraries loaned books to
for the purpose of digital scanning and creating metadata files (Ford, 2011).
Converting books to a digital format allows the libraries to circulate digital copies without
compensating the owner of the copyright. Consequently, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The simplified definition of the Fair Use Doctrine is to give the public the right to make reasonable
uses of the copyrighted material, while protecting the interests of the copyright owners (Samuelson,
1995). The challenge is how the legal system measures fair use and particularly in this case,
transformative use. Judges consider four factors for measuring fair use. The first is the purpose of
character of the use. Second is the nature of the copyrighted work. The third is the amount and
substantiality of the portion taken. Finally, the fourth is the effect of the use upon the potential
market (Stanford, 2015). When HathiTrust a Google company, began digitalizing thousands of
books from the public library's and creating metadata, the copyrighted materials were being
duplicated by a for profit company.
Although the company who owns HathiTrust is a for profit company, their intended use and
transformation of the material was not with the intent of profit. Yet one might have a hard time
believing Google would fund such an endeavor if they did not see an opportunity to make money off
the digitalization of the works. From a legal standpoint, a challenge is how the judges measure the
portion taken and the effect of the use upon the potential market, particularly when this is the first
time of mass digitalization. The Actors Guild lost the case because the courts believed the
transformative factor of digitalizing the library books gave the public new

'The Ramayana' and 'Paradise Lost' hold stories of ancient times that tend to explain the existence of
two different cultures in the present world. Milton, the author of 'Paradise Lost,' concerns himself
with the Christian story of the 'Fall of man' while Valmiki, the author of The Ramayana, tries to
bring out an explanation to the goals of human life. In this assignment, I would like to compare
author's use of two female characters in both 'The Ramayan' and 'Paradise Lost' as I try to explain
the mythological themes expressed in these two old myths (Jung 64). Eve in 'Paradise ... Show more

Milton predecessors portray Eve as deficient in virtuous enterprise. They blamed Eve for the woes
of the world and their concept of Eve rooted in dualism, a view that is not depicted by Milton in the
book 'Paradise Lost'. Milton, represent Eve as a literary figure separating her from primitive
conception by those who hold on tradition yet they are unconscious of prime examples of Eve in the
society.
'Paradise Lost' is a literary epic of a personal effort while 'The Ramayan', however, is a non–literary
epic. Sita is the dominant female character in the story 'The Ramayana' and thus is comparable to
Eve in 'Paradise Lost' in their contribution to bringing the mythical themes to the two stories as they
are both mythical symbols. 'Paradise Lost' is a work of a single individual and thus it is possible to
conclude that the characters involved in the story are a projection of the author's ideas on how he
wants the characters to appear. It can thus be said that the characters in 'Paradise Lost' are truly
Milton's characters. This cannot be said of the characters in the epic story 'The Ramayana since it is
a collective effort of different people in bringing out the epic story. It is due to this that the
comparison of the two primary characters in the two separate stories becomes interesting.

A Discussion of Milton’s Theodicy in Paradise Lost
What is free will? Milton explains in Paradise Lost that free will is the answer to the justification of
Gods ways to man. There are three parts, or triangle, of theodicy, they are that God is all powerful,
all good, yet there are still bad things that happen. Milton wrote to explain and justify why there are
still bad things even though God is all good, and all powerful. Milton's answer to this is that there is
all good and all power, but the bad is not God's fault. Milton has three key ideas to support his
reasoning that he talks about in Paradise Lost; what happens before man, what happens in the
Garden of Eden, and what happens at the end.
The triangle of theodicy begins in Milton's Paradise Lost before mankind is made. The novel goes
through a series of falls among the characters that help Milton explain his idea of theodicy through
an epic poem. "Paradise Lost, which chronicles Satan's temptation of Adam and Eve and their
expulsion from Eden, is widely regarded as his masterpiece and one of the greatest epic poems in
world literature." (Horace) The opening lines of the poem tell you of the fall of man. "Of Man's First
disobedience, and the fruit of that Forbidden Tree whose mortal taste Brought Death into the world,"
(Book 1 lines 1–3) However, there had to be a fall before the humans, which was Satan, or else
Adam and Eve would have never fallen. The first fall happens before man and consisted of Satan
and his followers. "Milton's epic poem opens on the fiery lake

his journey he shows us the many horrors in Hell.Such as before entering Hell Dante reads a sign
stating"All hope abandon, ye who enter here!"(Alighieri) Which would be very horrific to read in

What comes to mind when you hear the word change? Not the money change, but change as in a

Satan's Persuasion Essay
There are hundreds of books which have written about Satan, such as The Satanic Bible by Anton
LaVey, The Church of Satan by Blanche Barton, Paradise Lost by John Milton, Book of Job etc.
Among the thousands of books which are written about Satan, Milton's Paradise Lost is mainly
about Satan's persuasion of Eve and Adam to choose wrong over good.
Milton's Paradise Lost is all about God, Satan, demons, angels, and humans; Adam and Eve. The
poem starts with Satan who is boiling in a lava lake in hell. He was banished from heaven for
conspiring against God. Satan and one–third of other cherubs in heaven were pushed into hell for
trying to overthrow God. Therefore the fallen angels plan to return to heaven and destroy Adam and
Eve; the general

Milton's Paradise Lost and His Justification of the Ways...
By Lee A. Zito
When John Milton decided to write, he knew from the start he wanted his creation to be that of an
epic. Paradise Lost is just that. It is Milton's own take on the biblical story of Satan's fall from grace
as well as man's fall. Milton was not only armed with an extensive knowledge on the Bible, but in
everything a man of his time could learn. With his wisdom he emersed himself into his work,
making Paradise Lost not only a tale of epic perportions, but one that would "Justify the ways of
God to Man." (I 26)
Even before reading Paradise Lost, I had always wondered why God allowed evil, and why he
allowed death. After a while I had simply accepted that God was God, and what happens, happens.
Basically an act of pure faith. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In this plan for man's salvation the end shall justify God's means. Therefore justifing the problem of
evil and reasons for allowing both sin and death to exist. This ultimate plan of God's Milton presents
in Paradise Lost is also a Greater Good Defense. Still, some might not understand why God finds it
necessary to put his creations through this process. Milton shows us how this process benefits
mankind who has fallen from grace, and also benefits God.
This process benefits man, because man will experience truth through free will. This truth is through
only through God. Discovering something on one's own is much more rewarding than simply
recieving it from the beginning and because man fell he must work to gain God's salvation through
being true. Being true as in true obedience, love, honor, and faith. These works of truth are standards
humanity must struggle with because of the initial fall from grace and now the problem of sin and
evil. There is also the "truth" himself, God's Son, who comes to humanity as it's salvation,
permitting them to once again achieve the grace of God.
All of this considered, how does this benefit God? If we make a chart with God at the top, and
follow it down through all His creations capable of free will, then we would come to three different
groupings capable of free will. These are the angels of heaven, the fallen angels, and humanity. God
is the Father,

Comparing Frankenstein And Plutarch's Books
Education is imperative to our understanding of the world and the relationships we have with others.
With this in mind, it is not surprising that Mary Shelly included the monster educating himself in the
book of "Frankenstein". The monster became educated through books that he discovered while
hiding at the DeLacey's household; however, the information contained in those books were used
justify his revengeful and hateful actions. The way the monster interpreted each of the four stories
contributed to the development of his ideologies about mankind. Since it was interpretation that led
to his demise, one might question what would happen if the books by which this monster educated
himself were exchanged with different books. If the books were ... Show more content on

Education sets the foundation for our ideologies; therefore, what we are taught influences our
beliefs. In Frankenstein, the monster's interpretation of the four works led him to a thirst for
revenge. Since his books had main ideas filled with despondency, culpability, relative truth, and
gloom, the monster used them as verification for his actions. He may have been created as a monster
on the outside; however, his interpretation of the material he educated himself with turned him into a
monster on the inside as well. If he would have read some of the stories that I replaced the originals
with, the story would have taken a different turn. This comes to show that education is the key to our
actions. What we fill our hearts and minds with reflect how we behave towards

Examples Of Light In Night By Elie Wiesel

  • 1. Examples Of Light In Night By Elie Wiesel Hope is what is given to all at one point in someone's life where all seems to be lost. Throughout the book Night Elie Wiesel, the author, expresses his experience during the Holocaust. The book allows us to understand how a horrible tragedy causes hope to be lost as well as faith. Elie Wiesel reveals his theme through the use of dark and light. The light presented in his book expresses the good seen throughout this tragedy. Darkness on the other hand shows all evil and tragedy that had to be lived or seen. One of the most important themes in Night is, when hope seems to be given it doesn't take long until it disappears. The theme is illustrated by the use of light and dark. Light describes the hope and faith in Jews while dark describes evil ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At first Elie explains how the Jews were all together when they heard they would be evacuated from their homes. Once the news was heard, "We felt this was not a bad thing; we were entirely among ourselves" (Wiesel 11). Even after the bad news the Jews remained with faith. Everyone saw the good that came from the bad situation and everyone had hope that all would be fine. Elie expresses light in a tragic situation by showing how Jews had faith and hope. It isn't long until they're all in concentration camp with death all around them. At one point Elie explains how a young boy loses his life after being hanged with 2 others. Elie writes, "The two men were no longer alive. Their tongues were hanging out, swollen and bluish. But the third rope was still breathing... 'For God's sake, where is God?' And from within me, I heard a voice answer: 'Where He is? This is where – hanging here from these gallows'" (Wiesel 64–65). This horrifying image of a young child hung reveals a great darkness. The quote expresses how faith is lost once Elie states that God is hung which refers to him being gone. Overall it is shown that when hope or faith is given it is easily taken away. This is revealed through the use of light and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Gene and Finny relationship is hard to classify as friends because they changedramatically throughout the book. There are many reasons why they were friends in thebeginning of the book, and not friends towards the end of the book, A Separate Peace. In thebeginning of the book A Separate Peace they approved each other and did many activitiestogether, but all that change towards the end of the story. This quote shows that Gene lost trust and loyalty, he lost loyalty becausehe hurt and injured Finny, Gene lost trust because he doesn't trust that Finny is good enough forhim so he pushed him off the tree. Trust and loyalty is the main part in a friendship. Even thoughGene betrayed Finny, Gene and Finny still thinks they are friends. The center of the story ASeparate Peace is when things started to unravel to me, mainly because of what Gene did toFinny. The ending of the story convinced me to not classify them as friends. It made me not toclassify them as friends because they lost the bond that they used to have, they lost all the toolsthey needed for a friendship. The quote that convinced me to not classify them as not friends iswhen Gene said "I never killed anybody and I never developed an intense level of hatred for theenemy. • 5. Summary Of Questioning Evangelism By Randy Newman In Randy Newman's book, Questioning Evangelism, he focuses on one main topic. That topic is how to use questions to spread the Good News of the Bible. He explains that these questions are extremely important and force people to think in ways they normally wouldn't on their own. A big chunk of this book is the author giving a "principle" and then following it by an example in the format of dialogue. Questioning Evangelism is split into 3 main parts. These three categories include "Why Ask Questions", "What Questions are People Asking", and "Why Aren't Questions and Answers Good Enough". In part one, "Why Ask Questions," Newman lays to foundation for his reasoning. He gives clear examples on what to say in certain situations or scenarios ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It would be beneficial to lay a foundation of the gospel down for all readers in order to expose all the readers to the Truth, especially to those who may not be Christian, but are still required to read the book. Without this foundation, it is hard for a non–Christian to apply the things learned from this book and apply it to daily life. Another concern or observation would have to be that this book didn't go in depth on evangelism, Yes, it talked about how to start conversation with non–believers, but it never really went past that. It would be helpful for Newman to go in depth on things he says after they get the conversation going. The majority of the examples in this book focus on how to start evangelism and less on how to maintain their attention and maintain the overall discussion. • 7. Farenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury "The books are to remind us what fools we are" (Bradbury, Fahrenheit 451). Book Burning has been around ever since books have. All throughout history from biblical to modern time book have been burned. Rarely are books burned for no reason, some of the most common reasons books are burned for religiously or politically. However is burning books good or bad for society? Whether if book burning is good or bad depends on how you see the reason they are being burned. There are many ways that book burning is good but many that are bad. In some ways book burning can be good. As appointed in Ray Bradbury's novel Fahrenheit 451 many of the characters point out that books consist of the real facts along with the truth about life that are good and bad. When somebody burns a book in their eyes and opinion it could be a good reason while to other it can be reason that makes no logical sense. Some reasons certain people may see it fit to burn books is because the books in their eyes are offensive or against their views, beliefs and values. In this case of book burning the person or group of people that are offended by this book are no longer offended and then can therefore live better socially because they're no longer offended or embarrassed. This can range from religious books to older books about times of inequality of two types of people or nationality. Another reason would be because someone who is in charge of a group of people or even a country they would like to control and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Then I thought that me doing the Bible could step on some toes, so I chose my next favorite work of literature. I chose to give this speech about the book If You're Reading This by Trent Reedy. I really believe that this book should be cherished because it gives us a different perspective on the struggles of being in high school, and what it is like to be part of a family that has lost someone in the military. Now, I have not personally lost anyone in the military, but I do sympathize with people that have, mostly because I have a cousin now that is in the military, and it would hurt our family to lose him. Many Jews lost their lives do to that judgement. This talks and goes on in the book The Diary Of Anne Frank. In the book the girl Anne Frank is very calm and collected in this time she said "In spite of everything, I still believe people are really good at heart. I believe that the quote is true. I say this because in the book they all had their days were they were all upset or sad, but other than that they all had a little happiness in them. In this play of Anne's diary I have noticed very many acts of kindness that makes Anne's quote "In spite of everything, I still believe people are really good at heart" seem true. Anne did a lot of kind things throughout this play but I say that when Anne got everyone presents for hanukkah stuck out the most to me. She got everyone presents despite the hatefulness she may receive from some of the people. "It isn't new. It's one that you've done, but I rubbed it all out, and if you wait a while and forget you can do it all over again" This goes to show that people are good at heart because they can forgive and forget about the bad that has happened. The book also makes a big impression at first reading, especially for younger readers (which is when I first read it, many years ago now), who are captivated by the atmosphere of mystery and mysticism. For even as he nerved himself, he saw the corridors of his imagination twist and strain under impact; the pavilions were toppling; all was about to be in ruins. He was only partly unhappy, but he was infinitely and rather sadly perplexed. He did not know whether he had been mad and was now sane, or had been sane for a time and was now mad again. (216–7) Partly unhappy! I've seldom read about the internal life of a character that was so boring in its complexity. Hamlet may have waffled, but at least Shakespeare set that in the context of the revenge tragedy, an eventful genre. Part of my annoyance with Conway was his presence in an adventure story gone awry; Conway is a symbol of the way the two halves of the book don't support each other. "Washington Mcneely" by Edgar Lee Masters and Our Town by Thornton Wilder themes because Our Town was inspired by many of Edgar Lee Masters' poems. Both pieces of work share the themes of death and time, a character similarities between Mrs. Webb and Washington McNeely. Two themes the poem has is death and time. The poem displays the theme of time, because it starts out telling the story of a man who is from, and raises his children in, a noble and rich family. As his children get older, 2 of them died, and the others, to quote the poem "all were gone, or broken–winged or devoured by life". He had lost, essentially all of his children, and as we find out his wife. The poem shows how he went from a great man with a happy family, to a lost man who is all alone. The next theme the poem shows is death. Death is all throughout the poem. It starts with a man living a good life, but as it goes on his first child leaves, his next 2 children die, and the next 3 become incredibly unsocial and that's not even it! Near the end his wife, the mother of all 6 children, dies. "I sat under my cedar tree, till ninety years were tolled." The poem ends with the man dying, after everything he had lost; he died in his favorite place to be, under his cedar tree. The book also displays the same themes as the poem. Similarities Between Paradise Lost And Paradise Lost Paradise Lost comparison to three epics of antiquity There are many ways to compare and contrast Paradise Lost with the three other epics of antiquity. The epics are Paradise Lost, Aeneid, The Epic Gilgamesh, and The Iliad. The most obvious difference is era. Paradise Lost is an epic poem from the 17th century and is written in blank verse which is the most modern phrasing method. According to an article on Enotes, out of the other three epics, the Iliad and Aeneid came from the same dactyllic family. ("Compare Milton's Paradise Lost"). Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many others disagree and see Satan in a more sympathetic sense. Although he is the antagonist, his motives are very real and his anger is genuinely human. His motivations are ambitious and relatable. In classical epics, the journey is the prime motivation for the heroes to literally demonstrate their heroism. Paradise Lost is more of an inward journey. In fact, the main journey is taken, which is Satan's fall from heaven, has occurred before the action takes place. So instead, we have an epic of plans , motivations, of ambitions; the climactic actions are mundane in comparison to the bloodshed of Achilles, for example. Paradise Lost employs a dual narrative and remains focus on the two interweaving stories. Classic epics give a great amount of attention to "ancillary character" and myths. ("Compare Milton's Paradise Lost"). In the Iliad, the rage of Diomedes is meant to show to battle and bring glory to a side character, yet not giving any insight to the main story of Achilles revenge. This is meant to depict multiple heroes. Finally, heroism. Classical epics see heroism as an act which includes defeating the enemy with cunning wisdom and bloodshed. Paradise Lost portrays heroism in a silent servitude and willing acceptance. As of now she lives in California and trains her search and rescue dog. Margarita Engle wrote children's books and influenced Cuban culture through her books including Drum Dream Girl, When you Wander, and Surrender Tree. Margarita Engle's book Drum Dream Girl promoted Cuban Culture and gender equality. The book is about a girl who is in a society who looks down upon girl drummers and was intended for boys. But when they hear her play they accept her passion for playing the drums. "On an island of music In a city of drum beats The drum dream girl Dreamed." This quote means the girl was passionate about playing the drums and how the Cuban culture accepts people for who they are and her culture also values music. It is an extremely intricate, thick and detailed book. Tender is the Night is a book about the adult life of a charismatic and personable psychiatrist named Dick Diver and his marriage to his wife Nicole Diver who is also his patient. He meets a young hollywood actress, named Rosemary Hoyt, one summer and has an affair with her. This affair begins his slow decline to his downfall and eventual loss of his reputation, career and family. For its many themes and strong dynamic characters, I have found Tender is the Night to be a good, satisfying book to read. The main theme conveyed throughout this novel is that although love brings happiness at times, love is destructive. Fitzgerald's principle idea he wants to convey is that life is unpredictable, your hopes, dreams, and plans can change in a second and love is the main reason. Fitzgerald aims to show, that these changes are not for the better. Fitzgerald presents this ideal through Dick Diver. Dick Diver's goal is to become a world–renowned psychiatrist. That all changes the day he meets Nicole. He gives it all up for love, devoting his life to take care of her. After 6 years or so, Dick meets Rosemary and falls "'in love with (her)", "He knew that what he was now doing marked a turning point in his life", damaging his seemingly perfect marriage (74, 91). It was dated July 1944, several months before she perished in a concentration camp. Could you imagine being cooped up like Anne and her family was for about two and a half years? They were going through many difficult situations and three points to support is that she was always positive and rarely negative. Anne also never lost hope, and she had good people surrounding her with good thoughts to keep her going through this tough situation. • 27. Conflict In Paradise Lost Unlike the Biblical account of the fall in the Book of Genesis, with his epic poem, Paradise Lost, John Milton adds a lot of detail about the complete story of Man, the beginning of Satan, his rise and Man's Fall. Although the ideas for Paradise Lost came from a few pages in the Book of Genesis, Milton's account kept readers wondering what was going to happen next. Because he was going against the church already with Paradise Lost, it was more intriguing for him to take the same ideas in the Bible and extend them into more detail, making Satan look like the Hero and succeeding at what he wanted to do. Satan the perfect angel banished from nothing to the pits of Hell, with no chance of return, conjures up a plan to get revenge, building a legacy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Paradise Lost, God is almost emotionless or aloof; he embodies pure reason and pure justice, and every response he gives seems to be cold. In Genesis God is wise and known as the creator and is more the narrator of what is happening than in Milton's epic. Also He is referred to as Lord God, instead of God, like Milton refers to Him. So, in close the start and fall Man to summarize the creation and reason for human nature is "God gave Man free will, from Man's free will, sin and death came into the world." Paradise Lost was about Adam and Eve, how they came to be created, the fall of Satan and his journey to get back at God by corrupting Adam and Eve. The main plot of this took place in God's creation called the Garden of Eden. Paradise Lost is similar to the book of Genesis because its story comes from the main pages of Genesis, chapters one through four. My thesis is: While the Book of Genesis portrays Satan as an evil antagonist, Milton's Paradise Lost presents him as a more sympathetic character. Perhaps not a hero, but an anti–hero. An anti–hero is someone who lacks the attributes of a hero, such as courage or being morally ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In both the science fiction book, The First Men in the Moon by H.G. Wells, and the action–thriller book, The Lost Symbol, by Dan Brown, this exact thing happens to both protagonists. In the First Men in the Moon, Mr. Bedford loses his friend Cavor to the Selenites, a species which lives on the moon and seems to be a threat towards both of their survival. In The Lost Symbol, Langdon loses his friend and top tier Mason Peter Solomon, to Mal'akh, a revenge seeking Mason who wants to kill off the Solomon Family. The similarity between these books is that both protagonists lose one of their closest friends and spend a good part of the book looking for them. "Or if presently they come hunting us?" He made no answer. "You had better take a club," I said. He shook his head, and stared away from me across the waste. But for a moment he did not start. On the other hand, Life of Pi focuses on humanity's ability to persevere, even during the hardest situations. Pi was lost at sea for 227 days with a 450–pound Bengal tiger and to stay alive in that sort of situation requires amazing perseverance. If the creature had read this book and learned more about perseverance through Pi's example, I believe that he would have been able to persevere through the ostracization, and wouldn't have been so driven by his hatred for his own appearance. • 41. John Milton: A View of Evil vs. Ignorance Essay When a person hears Satan, a streak of fear, and the thought of evil arises. People fear Satan, and think of him as evil, but in John Milton's Paradise Lost, he displays a thought of the Father being the evil being, and Satan a tragic hero. In Paradise Lost, Book 1 and 2, the minor areas where God is shown, He is displayed as hypocritical. He contradicts himself by creating the humans to be of free will, but when Satan displays free will, he is shunned. Satan could be described in many terms, and by many people, but all can be disputed. According to my sources, Satan is displayed as the hero, while God is the evil deity, and Milton was wrong for writing Him as so. In this essay, I will show my thoughts on the subject of Satan as an evil ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "Satan is a portrait of rebellion gone wrong, but not of the wrongs of rebellion" (Bryson). Cromwell later diminished, and Charles II was bestowed to King of England, while Satan is still trying to destroy all of God's creations, and diminish their good moral, and qualities. According to Woodman, "Evil, as presented by Milton, may be defined as a rebellion against the hierarchy of God's creation.", but in my opinion, evil is being immoral and vicious. Satan could be described as evil, but because of his reasons to be evil towards God, I don't really believe he is evil. He is a spoiled, broken child that wants to get back at the deity that wronged him. His entire existence is to seek revenge on God for throwing him and his apostles out of heaven, and shunning them into Hell. Satan just doesn't come across as evil in Paradise Lost and Milton describes him as a hero that tried to conquer an evil tyrant. Satan has evil qualities in our stories today, but in Book 1 and 2 of Paradise Lost, he is not considered evil. When a person compares what society thinks of Satan today, and how Milton wrote Satan in Paradise Lost, he is considerably not evil. Milton wrote this text because he truly believed that he was special in God's eyes and was sent to tell the story of the first sin by humans. Paradise Lost, chronicles Satan's temptation of Adam and Eve and their expulsion from Eden. Milton was a great writer and a devout christian, which can be shown in Paradise Lost. This text tells the story of man's first sin against God by the eating of the fruit from the Tree of Knowledge. Satan tempted Adam and Eve to eat this fruit. God made humans in his own image and likeness, without any flaws. Raphael even states, "God made thee perfect." God created man perfectly, but he gave man free will. God gave Adam and Eve the ability to resist evil through free will. Free will also allows for Adam and Eve to give into the temptation of evil. God even states in Book three, that he created man, "Just and right, sufficient to have stood, though free to fall." Milton, again, is attempting to show that because God gave man the ability to resist temptation, he is not responsible for the fall of humans. Adam and Eve made the choice to eat the fruit of the forbidden tree even though they knew they should. They had the capabilities to resist this temptation, but they allowed themselves to fall. So, Milton's theodicy in his epic poem, Paradise Lost, brings up the question of free will, along with asserting God as being all powerful and good. Milton wanted to show that God is not responsible for the fall of humans as he gave man all the necessary tools to resist evil in this epic poem. Paradise Lost, though, is perhaps the most famous epic poem ever written. • 49. John Milton 's Paradise Lost John Milton's Paradise Lost is a paradox of morality and character definitions. After reading multiple articles, the largest concerning topic was the hero status of an inherently evil character. The issue lies within defining what a hero is and is not in terms of epic poetry. John Milton's refusal to clarify a hero shows this paradox he has created is a something that he meant to achieve. According to Mary Nyquist in The Father 's Word/Satan 's Wrath, "The text seems here not just to invite, but to provoke interpretation, the dictatorial arbitrariness of the utterance being noticeably amplified by the blank silence of Paradise Lost on its meaning..." (191). Satan 's fatal flaws, ever present inner struggles, his determination to wage war against an adversary, and the general defining characteristics at the time are supporting evidence for claiming Satan to be the hero. The issue of defining a hero stems from the different educated branches studying the work. A Christian Theologian's definition will be the opposite of Satan's character. That being said the working definition of an epic hero for this paper will be the seven most common traits found among claimed epic heroes. The first is noble birth, followed by capable of deeds of great strength and courage, great warrior, travels over a vast setting, national heroism, a perceived fall from grace, and faces supernatural and internal struggles. The simplified definition of the Fair Use Doctrine is to give the public the right to make reasonable uses of the copyrighted material, while protecting the interests of the copyright owners (Samuelson, 1995). The challenge is how the legal system measures fair use and particularly in this case, transformative use. Judges consider four factors for measuring fair use. The first is the purpose of character of the use. Second is the nature of the copyrighted work. The third is the amount and substantiality of the portion taken. Finally, the fourth is the effect of the use upon the potential market (Stanford, 2015). When HathiTrust a Google company, began digitalizing thousands of books from the public library's and creating metadata, the copyrighted materials were being duplicated by a for profit company. Although the company who owns HathiTrust is a for profit company, their intended use and transformation of the material was not with the intent of profit. THE FEMALE CHARACTER IN THE EPIC STORIES 'PARADISE LOST' AND 'THE RAMAYANA' [Name of the Student] [Name of the Instructor] [Subject] [Date] 'The Ramayana' and 'Paradise Lost' hold stories of ancient times that tend to explain the existence of two different cultures in the present world. Milton, the author of 'Paradise Lost,' concerns himself with the Christian story of the 'Fall of man' while Valmiki, the author of The Ramayana, tries to bring out an explanation to the goals of human life. In this assignment, I would like to compare author's use of two female characters in both 'The Ramayan' and 'Paradise Lost' as I try to explain the mythological themes expressed in these two old myths (Jung 64). Eve in 'Paradise ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Milton predecessors portray Eve as deficient in virtuous enterprise. They blamed Eve for the woes of the world and their concept of Eve rooted in dualism, a view that is not depicted by Milton in the book 'Paradise Lost'. Milton, represent Eve as a literary figure separating her from primitive conception by those who hold on tradition yet they are unconscious of prime examples of Eve in the society. 'Paradise Lost' is a literary epic of a personal effort while 'The Ramayan', however, is a non–literary epic. Sita is the dominant female character in the story 'The Ramayana' and thus is comparable to Eve in 'Paradise Lost' in their contribution to bringing the mythical themes to the two stories as they are both mythical symbols. 'Paradise Lost' is a work of a single individual and thus it is possible to conclude that the characters involved in the story are a projection of the author's ideas on how he wants the characters to appear. It can thus be said that the characters in 'Paradise Lost' are truly Milton's characters. This cannot be said of the characters in the epic story 'The Ramayana since it is a collective effort of different people in bringing out the epic story. It is due to this that the comparison of the two primary characters in the two separate stories becomes interesting. Sita is first introduced ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Lost in the Sun is a great book by Lisa Graff, also author of Absolutely Almost. To add, this book has 289 pages, the main character name is Trent in this realistic story of a limited third person. Not only we only feel what Trent feels, but Fallon has a creative appearance and conflict that will make you curious. Now, from the terrible accident he made, Trent is really ... • 63. A Discussion of Milton’s Theodicy in Paradise Lost What is free will? Milton explains in Paradise Lost that free will is the answer to the justification of Gods ways to man. There are three parts, or triangle, of theodicy, they are that God is all powerful, all good, yet there are still bad things that happen. Milton wrote to explain and justify why there are still bad things even though God is all good, and all powerful. Milton's answer to this is that there is all good and all power, but the bad is not God's fault. Milton has three key ideas to support his reasoning that he talks about in Paradise Lost; what happens before man, what happens in the Garden of Eden, and what happens at the end. The triangle of theodicy begins in Milton's Paradise Lost before mankind is made. The novel goes through a series of falls among the characters that help Milton explain his idea of theodicy through an epic poem. "Paradise Lost, which chronicles Satan's temptation of Adam and Eve and their expulsion from Eden, is widely regarded as his masterpiece and one of the greatest epic poems in world literature." (Horace) The opening lines of the poem tell you of the fall of man. "Of Man's First disobedience, and the fruit of that Forbidden Tree whose mortal taste Brought Death into the world," (Book 1 lines 1–3) However, there had to be a fall before the humans, which was Satan, or else Adam and Eve would have never fallen. The first fall happens before man and consisted of Satan and his followers. "Milton's epic poem opens on the fiery lake ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Like a famous actor Richard Simmons once said "You are one of a kind and unique. Never forget that."(Simmons) Therefore each unique person has an unique understanding of Hell and Satan. This could also explain the many controversial ideas Milton and Dante depicted hell and Satan in their books. In Dante's Alighieri book "The Inferno" it set in the year 1300.The book starts with Dante getting lost in the woods and meeting his guide to his journey of Hell.As Dante goes on his journey he shows us the many horrors in Hell.Such as before entering Hell Dante reads a sign stating"All hope abandon, ye who enter here!"(Alighieri) Which would be very horrific to read in my belief. As we read further Dante explores the evil in Hell such as souls being tortured and turned into inanimate things.(The Inferno) As Dante goes further through Hell , Hell becomes unbelievably scary .Dante explored Hell and met the fierce leader of Hell at his dear home.Satan is unbelievably a scary character he doesn't even notice when Dante and Virgil pass through his chambers. Gathering the information from above and from the book, I believe that Dante depicted Hell as a scary place to be.Where violence and punishment was the norm. ... • 75. Milton's Paradise Lost and His Justification of the Ways... By Lee A. Zito When John Milton decided to write, he knew from the start he wanted his creation to be that of an epic. Paradise Lost is just that. It is Milton's own take on the biblical story of Satan's fall from grace as well as man's fall. Milton was not only armed with an extensive knowledge on the Bible, but in everything a man of his time could learn. With his wisdom he emersed himself into his work, making Paradise Lost not only a tale of epic perportions, but one that would "Justify the ways of God to Man." (I 26) Even before reading Paradise Lost, I had always wondered why God allowed evil, and why he allowed death. After a while I had simply accepted that God was God, and what happens, happens. Basically an act of pure faith. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In this plan for man's salvation the end shall justify God's means. Therefore justifing the problem of evil and reasons for allowing both sin and death to exist. This ultimate plan of God's Milton presents in Paradise Lost is also a Greater Good Defense. Still, some might not understand why God finds it necessary to put his creations through this process. Milton shows us how this process benefits mankind who has fallen from grace, and also benefits God. This process benefits man, because man will experience truth through free will. This truth is through only through God. Discovering something on one's own is much more rewarding than simply recieving it from the beginning and because man fell he must work to gain God's salvation through being true. Being true as in true obedience, love, honor, and faith. These works of truth are standards humanity must struggle with because of the initial fall from grace and now the problem of sin and evil. There is also the "truth" himself, God's Son, who comes to humanity as it's salvation, permitting them to once again achieve the grace of God. All of this considered, how does this benefit God? If we make a chart with God at the top, and follow it down through all His creations capable of free will, then we would come to three different groupings capable of free will. These are the angels of heaven, the fallen angels, and humanity. God is the Father, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

With this in mind, it is not surprising that Mary Shelly included the monster educating himself in the book of "Frankenstein". The monster became educated through books that he discovered while hiding at the DeLacey's household; however, the information contained in those books were used justify his revengeful and hateful actions. The way the monster interpreted each of the four stories contributed to the development of his ideologies about mankind.
