Theme Of The Prison Door
The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne opens with a scene that introduces some of the major
themes of the novel. The chapter, titled "The Prison Door", contains little action, and instead sets the
scene and introduces many themes and symbols in the novel. A crowd of somber, dreary–looking
puritans have gathered outside the door of a prison in seventeenth–century Boston. The building's
heavy oak door are studded with iron spikes, and the prison appears to have been constructed to hold
dangerous criminals. The one incongruity in the otherwise drab scene is the rosebush that grows next
to the prison door. The narrator suggests that it offers a reminder of Nature's kindness to the
condemned; for his tale, he says, it will provide either a "sweet moral blossom" or else some relief
in the face of unrelenting sorrow and gloom. It is through "The Prison Door" that the major themes
of the novel such as sin, punishment, puritanism, and nature are introduced to the novel.
The scene opens with a crowd of men and women assembled near a dilapidated wooden prison. The
narrator says that this particular prison was most likely built upon the founding of Boston and then
goes on to describe prisons as the "black flower of civilized society." At this point, the theme of sin
and punishment is introduced into the novel. Prisons are a "black flower" because though they are
meant to punish sin (represented by the color black in the novel), they would not exist without sin.

Analysis Of The Book ' The Wolf '
Spring had finally sprung and Sophie just couldn't waste such a beautiful day. "I think I'm going to
take a walk!" she said to herself as she was admiring her blooming flowers. After she watered all of
her flowers she went back into the house to put on her jacket.
It had been such a cold winter, it made Sophie so happy to be able to enjoy the warm weather. The
birds were chirping and Sophie couldn't help but hum along. She was nearing the lake when she
heard crying. "Hello? Is someone there?" she asked. "Yes! I'm over here! I'm stuck in the rose bush"
a voice answered. She ran over and found a wolf stuck in the thorny branches. "Don't move around
or you'll keep scratching yourself!" she warned. "Okay, just please get me out!" the wolf replied.
Very carefully, Sophie moved the branches and the wolf was able to crawl out. "Thank you, thank
you! I had been trapped in there all morning" the wolf said. "You're welcome. What's your name?"
Sophie asked.
"Clark."
"Hi Clark, I'm Sophie. You have some pretty bad scratches on your arm. Come with me back to my
house, I'll clean and bandage them for you."
"Okay, thank you! Any chance you'd have something to eat? I'm kind of hungry."
"Sure, I made some soup this morning."
Sophie took Clark back to her house. She cleaned up his cuts and wrapped them in bandages. She
fed him some soup and before she knew it, he had fallen asleep.
"Clark...Clark...wake up!" Sophie said as she shook Clark from his dream.

A Short Story : A Story Of A Cat?
"We have been aimlessly for hours," cried Pickles "I know," said Rose as she contuined to skip

alcohol are problematic and preventing him from having a proper relationship with his son. At the

The duo had a conversation only consisting of small talk, culminating when the father questioned
Charlie about baseball. the father's rude request for refills is not granted on the condition of Charlie's

Angela Carter’s The Bood Chamber Essay
In Angela Carter's The Bloody Chamber, the theme of transformation appears throughout the short
story cycle. The hero/heroine's virginity acts as a source of strength that protects them from harm.
Their lack of fear also saves them from death. Virginity acts as power of potentia, either literally or
symbolically and results in a release of an observed transformative power. The bloody chamber
serves a different symbolic purpose of transformation for Beauty in "The Courtship of Mr Lyon",
the heroine in "The Tiger's Bride" and the Countess in "The Lady of the House of Love". Each of
these characters will embark on a journey that questions their selfhood in circumstances that are
presented to them and ultimately each will go through a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This foregrounds potential of narcissism within Beauty. The Beast allows Beauty to go back to
London to be with her father under the condition that she must return before winter is over. While in
London, she, "[sends] him flowers, white roses in return for the ones he had given her; and when she
left the florist, she experienced a sudden sense of perfect freedom, as if she had jus escaped from an
unknown danger" (48). With this gesture, Beauty feels all her debts are settled and she no longer has
an obligation to the Beast. When she puts on her robe of fur, she becomes her own beast, showing a
parallel between her and the Beast.
Beauty undergoes a physical alteration essential for her negative transformation, due to her
susceptibility to corruptibility. Since "she was learning at the end of her adolescence, how to be a
spoiled child and that pearly skin of hers was plumping out, a little, with high living and
compliments" (48–49). Beauty transformed into a snobbish woman who became obsessed with
materialistic objects and her looks. Her epiphytic moment for redemption occurs when the spaniel is
at the door, thinking the Beast has come to collect her. She acts as a supplementary element, who
offers companionship to the Beast. She is a loyal hybrid figure, half human half beast and despite
being, "[a] well brushed, jewelled dog" (49) she demonstrates human capacity for compassion,

Light In The Forest Johnny Tremain Analysis
Compare and Contrast Essay Rough Draft The Light in the Forest, by Conrad Richter, and Johnny
Tremain, by Esther Forbes, are two incredibly distinct novels, each with their own similarities and
differences when compared to one another. True Son, the protagonist in Light in the Forest, is a
fifteen–year–old boy raised by a tribe of Delaware Indians for the past eleven years of his life.
Though he is biologically American, he wholeheartedly considers himself a full blooded Indian.
This not only creates turmoil when he is forcibly moved to his biological white family but causes
True Son confusion when he is forced to choose between not only his two families but his two other
identities as well. On the other hand, Johnny Tremain, the protagonist in the novel Johnny Tremain,
faces a completely different situation for he is a fourteen–year old boy living in colonial Boston. He
is at first entirely self–centered and arrogant due to his prodigious gifts as a silversmith apprentice.
However, when an unfortunate injury results in him having a crippled hand, this destroys any chance
of him being an adequate silversmith. He faces humiliation but through many struggles and
difficulties transforms into a patriotic man. Through analyzing the two novels, there were many
similarities and differences found. Similarities include the difficult journey they both encounter as
well as their similar behavior. On the contrary, both individuals differ through their race and how
they were brought up. Both True Son and Johnny Tremain desire to stay in a comfortable setting.
They greatly enjoy their life and make no wish to change it. And yet, both characters were forced to
face hardships which ultimately changes both their situation as well as their perspectives in life. For
instance, Johnny Tremain had a comfortable position in life. He was widely considered the most
talented young silversmith in Boston. Though he was egotistic, he was destined for a bright future.
Regrettably, when molten silver disfigured his hand he lost his chance at ever becoming a
silversmith and can no longer find skilled work. Filled with self pity and despair, he almost turns to
a life of crime. Only his friendships and new job with a Whig newspaper company

A great way to make the most of your money is to have 1 visit to the nail salon and then make it last.
The real gem of going to a salon is the shaping they do on your nails. After the polish has worn off

professionally shaped, which looks great for bolder colours.

Use Of Birds In Poetry
The use of nature in poetry and stories has a long history in Ireland going back to the early use of
bird song to describe divine messages. (Melia, 1999). The natural world gives writers the ability to
communicate expression through the use as symbols and Celtic traditions describe how animals and
birds were important parts of society. The use of natural world subjects give a poet such as Oscar
Wilde the inspiration for some of his best works in poetry and short story. Oscar Wilde's use of birds
and how they are used throughout his writings show great examples of the use of the natural world.
The connection to nature in Irish literature can be shown by examining some of Oscar Wilde's most
important works such as The Nightingale and the Rose and The Happy Prince as well as poems such
as Magdalen Walks. Oscar Wilde was an Irish poet who was born in Dublin Ireland and lived from
1854–1900. throughout his life Oscar Wilde wrote many poems and short stories. Some of his most
endearing short stories were fairytales for young children and were told using birds, animals and

The Is An Ancient One, Dating Back Well Before The Time Of...
Records show that the practice of grafting is an ancient one, dating back well before the time of
Christ It was once believed that any plant could be grafted on any other. This probably arose from
observations made in tropical areas where seeds sometimes lodged in the cleft of a tree where seeds
germinated and grew in the organic matter that had accumulated there. However, today, we know
that only very closely related plants are capable of being grafted. Many forms of grafting are
practiced, and the technique known as budding is widely used in the production of fruit trees, roses,
and ornamental trees and shrubs. Without the practice of grafting many of the popular varieties we
know today, such as the Delicious Apple or the Peace Rose, could not have been maintained. Wrong
was the man who wrote in 1889: We doubt if there is a greater nuisance in the whole practice of
gardening than the art of grafting. It is very clever, it is very interesting, but it will be no great loss if
it is abolished altogether. While the technique of budding generally works best during June, July and
August, many other forms of grafting are done just before plants begin new growth and are still
dormant. Three terms are important in any discussion of grafting: stock, scion, and cambium. The
stock is the rooted lower portion of a plant on which the graft is to be made. The scion is the shoot,
bud or piece of twig to be fastened on the stock. Most important of all is the cambium, a thin layer

Essay about John-Jin by Rose Tremain
John–Jin by Rose Tremain is a short story with two main characters. We have John–Jin himself, who
was Chinese and born with a disease that held back his growth. He would only grow in minute little
bursts. When John–Jin became older his adopted parents took him to Manchester to see a specialist
who then started him on treatments of growth hormone shots. Things started to look up but after ten
years when John–Jin was 12, the shots took a bad affect on him and he developed Creutzfeldt and

In my own view, the pavilion stood for mortality. Meaning that nothing lasts forever and everything
has its end. When the pavilion was there at the beginning of the story, Susan showed great
excitement for going there and described it as a fun place to be. Toward the end of the story she
didn't describe the pavilion as a great place to be anymore. Instead, she walked to the end of the pier

saying that is, I wonder what would have happened if John–Jin never existed anymore. She's getting
a since that no one or anything is immortal.
Susan said toward the end of the story that she knows something important now and not to wish for
anything unless you know precisely what you're going to get and how. I think what she learnt was
that if you wish for something and it comes true, it may seem great at the time but nothing lasts
forever and to be careful because it can hurt worse after it leaves.
In conclusion, I agree with the

Analysis Of The Little Prince
The novel The Little Prince was originally published in 1943. Antoine De Saint was a pioneering
aviator, a prominent aristocrat, poet and writer, and thus the novel; The Little Prince was inspired by
his real–life experiences (Sís). He only added a few fictionalized imageries to enhance the merit and
understandability of the book to his audience (Cengage Learning Gale). The book has demonstrated
massive success as it has sold over 140 million copies worldwide translated into more than 300
languages and dialects, and thus becoming the best–selling book ever published (Howard and
Mortensen). More significantly, this novel is one of the most key books because of its thoughtful
and introspective nature, and hence bringing hope to human beings. The little prince is one of the
children's must–read handbooks with philosophy for grown–ups. This is as a result of the book's
significant poetic and optimistic reflections primarily on the existence of human beings (Cengage
Learning Gale). The novel demonstrates the author's practical artistic skills through his lyrical,
charming and well–illustrations made throughout the book, sweeping the audience into a whirl hood
of childhood fancy (Saint–Exupéry). The Little Prince is a simple book with a combination of satire,
philosophy, science, imagination and childish vivacity that can command the attention of grown–ups
and children's hearts and minds.
Through his book, Antoine De Saint–Exupery communicates important values that "grown–ups"
overlooks more often in everyday life. The Little Prince is written as a children's novel. However, it
be can analyze at various diverse levels. Therefore, it's important to note that a "child" or an "adult"
is not defined by the age, but rather by the state of mind (Weber and Probert). Although The Little
Prince is designed as a childhood novel, it makes several explanations and clarifications regarding
human life and nature, and hence it's optimistic. For instance, The Little Prince is depicted as one of
the two protagonists of the story. Hence, after leaving his home planet and his rose which he adored
so much, he traveled around the world, ending up on Earth. He was puzzled by the behavior of
grown–ups (Howard and Mortensen). The

Essay on Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter
In Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter, the theme of sin viewed through the prism of many colors is the
essence of the novel. The protagonist, Hester, her child, Pearl, and the Reverend Dimmesdale all live
in a Puritanical society in Boston, and are subject to the Puritans' strict religious beliefs and rigid
attitudes. Exposed to sin and the temptation of its concealment in varying degrees, these characters
evolve through the novel in different ways. Hawthorne brilliantly displays these differences by
juxtaposing extreme and vivid colors—concealment is shown in dark, drab, and gloomy shades,
while openness has a bright and colorful sheen. In this way, Hawthorne establishes a dichotomy
between lack of color and color in order to show ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hawthorne creates a bleak setting with "A throng of bearded men, in sad–colored garments and
gray, steeplecrowned hats" and a dark prison with a "beetle–browed and gloomy front" which was
further shadowed by "weather stains and other indications of age, which gave a yet darker aspect" to
the prison. From the darkness of this setting, a vividly contrasting images emerges of "a wild rose
bush" that thrives with "delicate gems" and "fragile beauty". Hawthorne sets this colorful bush near
"burdock, pig–weed, apple–peru, and such unsightly vegetation" which he describes as the "black
flowers". In this way, Hawthorne establishes the dichotomy between color and lack of color at the
outset of the book, and relates it to the personalities of the main characters.
The astonishing survival of a sole colorful rose bush amidst the dark weeds symbolizes the potential
for Hester and Pearl to survive the cruel puritanical punishments of the dark Puritans. Just as the
rose bush radiates colorfully from its surroundings, Hester gleams in contrast to the large shadow of
the Puritans that falls over the scaffold area. The Puritans are dressed in dark suits, "some wearing
hoods" and others "bareheaded", and the hag–like women are gray and grungy with a "coarse fibre"
and unembroidered attire. Hester

Theme Of Symbols In Sons And Lovers
In Sons and lovers, D.H Lawrence has made a very clever use of symbols. The novel abounds in
symbolic objects and events. Yet they are so well integrated with the narrative that they hardly ever
appear obtrusive. When understood, these symbols adds to the richness of the novel and enhances
our appreciation of the novel. Mark Spikla says "The symbolic scenes are extremely literal and the
symbols seem to function as integral strands in the webs of emotional tensions." In Sons and Lovers,
we have a host of such symbolic scenes which have a catalytic effect upon the intensity of the plot
and action in the novel. The description of coal pits is symbolic. The coal pits standing at the
horizon are a concrete reality. The entire life of the community depends on them. Their symbolic
significance become clearer as the novel progresses that these coal pits are a particular way of and a
particular attitude towards life. They are closely associated with Walter Morel who stands for an

Narrative Loss And The Melancholic Reader Of Johnny Tremain
In Eric Tribunella's essay "Narrative Loss and the Melancholic Reader of Johnny Tremain", the
concept of failure is one of Tribunella's main focal points throughout the essay about Esther Forbes'
Johnny Tremain. Tribunella argues that these failures are present because the novel lacks climax
throughout the essay's entirety and without this climax there is no sense of closure in the most
climatic events. One particular failure that Tribunella mentions in his essay is the failure of love
triangles in the novel. Tribunella argues that there are three love triangles in Johnny Tremain but
none of these are fulfilled with a "bang". Instead each one of these love triangles slowly fizzles out
throughout the novel. The love triangles that are found in Forbes' Johnny Tremain are not those that
represent an epic romance but instead they represent those of a childhood crush. These
representations can be found in each one of the love triangles that Tribunella argues that is present in
the novel. Tribunella states that one of the love triangles in the novel is between Johnny, Cilla, and
Tweedie. One would believe that this love triangle would create a great conflict in the series due to
the fact that Tweedie is imposing on what was theoretically Johnny's territory. Johnny was the
original "golden boy" in the Lapham household and due to one accident his pedestal was taken away
from him. Tweedie, a man who was not even around, swoops in to save the Lapham family and
takes Johnny's

Laura Koller's Spring Wedding
Spring Wedding
In my senior project, Laura Koller's wedding meant so much for me to be able to be a part of putting
my creativity into her wedding. I want Laura to have the best wedding with the most amazing
flowers she choose and to not worry about having the flowers not being the way she wants them to
be. When Laura's wedding caught my attention, I felt honor to be able to be part in the next step in
someone's lifetime. In this project, I'll talk about the history of weddings, the flowers that were used,
the creation and the packing up.
The flowers or herbs were used in historical weddings since the beginning of time to show a way of
love and well wishes to everyone. The first use of wedding flowers were the ancient Greeks. The
flowers or plants were used to make a crown for the bride to wear and was a gift of nature. The
bridesmaids would have floral decorations which were garlands, bridal bouquets and boutonnieres.
Mostly the bridesmaids were to make a poesies, to make, for each guest to wear as a symbol of
saying thanks. Over time, the flowers and their meanings stayed the same but the herbs lost their
place in modern North American weddings. Some of the cultures and religions have intertwine herbs
with flowers to celebrate the marriage with a gift of nature. Leading up to and during the Middle
Ages, weddings were considered as a family and community affairs. The only main thing about a
wedding was for both partners to state a consent to take one of them as a spouse.

I Am A Youth Counselor
Friday September 18th, 1992 (11.39 a.m.) It was by pure coincidence and good fortune that Judy's
birthday was the day after Harry's, giving Tom the perfect excuse (or so he told himself) to visit her
after three and a half years of separation. He carried a single red rose in his hand, a simple gift that
was all he could afford without asking Booker for money, and he loathed asking Booker for money.
It had taken a long time, but he was slowing finding his independence, and he refused to take
advantage of the man he loved. He knew it would take many more months of therapy before he had
the confidence to re–enter the workforce, but he planned to pull his weight financially as soon as he
could. While it was still a long way in the future, he hoped that one day, he could become a youth
counselor. It was his dream to help those who were addicted to drugs find a new path in life, and he
hoped his stint in prison would not hinder his ambition. He honestly believed he had a role to play in
helping those who had lost their way. It was his destiny and if he could prevent one other person
from ruining their life the way he had ruined his, then the last three years would have been worth all
the pain. Although his transformation had been painfully slow, he finally felt as though he had a
purpose in a world full of uncertainty. He had a clear vision for the future, but most importantly, he
was slowly but surely, finding Tom Hanson. Therefore, as he stood outside of Judy's

Analysis Of The Book ' The Palace '
For several weeks, Proserpina had stayed with King Pluto in his palace. She spent most of her days
ogling his tremendous rose gardens. She loved picking the roses and finding the small white pearl
that lay within the rare ones. Red roses were her favourite, their lush, bright petals never drooping or
falling, and in some circumstances, they smelled sweeter than any of the other roses. Proserpina's
favourite rose of all, however, was one made entirely of rubies and emeralds. The red rubies made
up the petals and the emeralds became the stem and a leaf. It was kept inside of a large glass case,
where only its beauty was allowed. Every morning after Pluto brought Proserpina to his castle, he
would hear her wake up in the early hours of the day, right when the sun began to rise, and watch
her pick flowers through his large window overlooking his land. He was lucky that she did not know
who he was, the God of the Underworld, she only thought he was the king of diamonds and stones.
Pluto had a plan, once he got her to eat something, she would be trapped in his kingdom forever, his
underworld. For now, however, he had to just watch as she deteriorated from hunger. It wasn't that
bad to be brutally honest, he's seen much worse. Since staying there, Proserpina had vowed not to
eat anything that she found, or anything that was given to her. She was afraid that if she ate
anything, it would deprive her of all of her bad memories and make her forget all of her cares.

The Passage Short Story
Adolescentes have many new things to learn before they become adults. Coming of age stories help
the reader understand the hardships that this time in one's life may have. These hardships help
develop the young into an adult. In the following stories the authors utilize selected detail to convey
the development into adulthood. In the first short story, The Passage by Dalton Trumbo uses special
detail in order to explain the loving relationship between the father and the son. For example, the
author uses the symbol of an "enormous pine" and the sentence, " his father has always preferred his
company to that of other men" to show his affection for the son. The enormous pine tree that looks
over the tent in which they sleep in can symbolize the paternal figure within him that looks over his
son. The author also tells us that the father would rather spend time with his son than other guys,
which shows the love he has for him and the time he wants to spend with him. Eventually in the
passage the son tells his father that he would rather go fishing with Bill Harper. "For a little while
his father didn't say thing. The he said why sure go along Joe." This sentence shows that his father
had a slight hesitation with him being alright with his son going with someone else. Perhaps a bit of
jealousy or sadness that the feeling wasn't mutual about fishing together. But, this shows their
relationship because even though the father might not be the happiest about his, his love for him

Similes In George Elliott Clarke's The Wisdom Of Shelley
"The Wisdom Of Shelley" by George Elliott Clarke is a beautifully written poem with a darker
meaning. There are many interesting things hiding within the poem but there are a few specific ones
I will mention. First, there are many different poetic devices used within this short poem. This
includes imagery, similes, and repetition. Second, the symbol of this poem is the rose which is
mentioned a few times throughout the poem. Third, the theme for "The Wisdom Of Shelley is
deception. Each of these points contributes to my understanding of the poem in its own way. There
are many poetic devices used throughout "The Wisdom Of Shelley". Repetition of words was the
first thing that really jumped out at me. Clarke repeats the words "words words words" (4), and
"loved loved loved" (15). What I believe this represents is how the character "X" only says empty
words to what I presume is his family. If you need to repeat the word "loved" three times, then it
starts to feel like you are only saying the words to make the other person happy.
The first few lines of the poem say "You come down, after / five winters, X, / bristlin' with roses"
(1–3) and this can be taken as "X" has been gone for five years showing no signs of returning. He
suddenly shows up with roses one day and expects all to be forgotten and forgiven. The presumed
child does not want to forgive him and forget about what happened. This really sets the mood and
tone for what is going to happen in the poem. Since it is

What Does The Flowers Symbolize In The Chrysanthemums
Flowers are typically given to someone as an expression of love or friendship. However, depending
on a person culture, it can also mean mourning and or death. Example, carnations and lilies
represent mourning, but yellow Roses represents friendship; Red roses are seen as romantic. Often
times flowers have shown symbolism in different literary pieces. In John Steinbeck's "The
Chrysanthemums", the protagonist, Elisa's loneliness and confinement are represented by the fenced
in garden and growth of her chrysanthemums.
To begin "The Chrysanthemums", is about a woman named Elisa who lives on a farm with her
husband. Throughout the entire story, it is evident that she feels lonely and trapped. This is
expressed through the symbolism of chrysanthemums.

Summary Of The Man Who Loved Flowers
Victor Hugo wrote that: "People in fantasy, often ignore the actual." (Les Misérables) and in this
story " The Man Who Loved Flowers" author reveal the delusion and illusion of humanity to us. In
this cause, it show us from the man think Norma is real and alive, he think his name is Love, and the
roadside people judge the young man only by his appearance and dressing, which are totally wrong
as we can know at the end of story.
The story mainly talks about a handsome young man of high spirits in the flower–stand to buy a

than a decade, young people still addicted to send flowers to a dead person. The author wrote in the
story:" She backed away, her face a round white blur, her mouth an opening black 0 of terror, and
she wasn't Norma, Norma was dead, she had been dead for ten years, and it didn't matter because
she was going to scream and he swung the hammer to stop the scream, to kill the scream, and he

Happy prince said the swallow to give his other eye sapphire to her. Swallow did not want to do it

The Romance Of The Rose Analysis
The Romance of the Rose was written in the 13th century by Guillaume de Lorris and Jean de
Meun. De Lorris was a French poet that wrote the first section of the poem, while De Meun was a
French author that wrote the second section. After de Lorris wrote the first section, he died, which
lead to de Meun finishing it. Their parts are related but have many differences. As de Lorris' section
is very comprehendible, de Meuns' is vaguer and requires more critical thinking. The poem has
created an abundance of arguments surrounding the topic of a women's dignity and role. These
arguments had immense impacts on today's pop culture. The book developed the notion of love not
being an emotion, but more of a pose. They did this by making characteristics, such as Courtesy,
Beauty, and Wealthy, as characters themselves to see how they would act in certain circumstances.
This helps the reader believe that the authors are trying to display how these traits are treated in real
life. The author states, "FIer color made her look like a new rosel and her skin was so tender that one
could tear it with a tiny thorn" (de Lorris 42), which helps the reader understand how the characters
names will be a big part of the poem and the moral surrounding it. It also suggests that some women
are less fragile, and harder to pursue than others which is directly related to how people perceive
women outside of the poem. The imagery and descriptions of the narrator's thoughts controls how
the whole poem is

Art Analysis Of Thomas P. Anshutz's A Rose
The image I chose for this paper is titled A Rose. The image is a painting painted in oil on a canvas
and was painted by Thomas P. Anshutz. The painting was produced in Pennsylvania during 1907. I
researched this image on ARTstor by using the term realism and then I narrowed down my search by
selecting a filter to return paintings as well as setting the geography filter to North America. The
painting belongs to The Metropolitan Museum of Art's collection and is on display in the American
Wing in the gallery of Images of Woman from 1880 to 1910.
I selected this painting because the colour contrast of the pink dress against the dark background
caught my eye. I also found the expression of the young woman to be interesting.
The painting depicts a young woman in a pink dress sitting down. The background is very dark but
three things can be made out by the viewer. Starting with the ground plane of the painting, an orange
carpet can be seen covering the entire floor. It is patterned and contains yellows, greens and blues.
The cool toned colours are darker in hue than the warm toned. Secondly, there appears to be a
cabinet or a desk lining the wall behind her. The wood of the cabinetry is carved with detailed
designs and is made of a dark stained wood. Despite the dark background a single red rose can be
seen on top of the cabinetry. The rose looks freshly picked and shows no signs of withering in its
petals. It is painted in a muted red colour that allows it to stand out on

Analysis Of Esther ForbesNovel Johnny Tremain
It is often said that "pride comes before the fall"– yet, at the same time, with such a fall also comes
an opportunity for one to rebound and "rise back up" again. In Esther Forbes' novel Johnny Tremain,
the titular young silversmith and main protagonist of the book clearly experiences this first–hand as
he goes through major character development and improvement after starting off with several
glaring flaws as the plot unfolds throughout the story. Forbes, the author, teaches this valuable
lesson throughout the novel that relates to many of the book's key themes. Overall, it is evident that
throughout the course of the novel, Johnny develops into a truly better individual as he overcomes
his pride, begins to consider others rather than ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After feeling 'down–in–the–dumps' immediately after his hand injury and thinking that "God had
turned away from him" (Forbes 80), Johnny is partly motivated to improve by the positive presence
of his new–found best friend, Rab Silsbee, from The Boston Observer. In Rab, he finds someone he
truly looks up to as a role model and example, which is a new experience for the formerly arrogant
boy. He betters himself by humbling himself, which leads him to, over time, grow far less self–
centered. For instance, he treats Dove better and even treats him like a friend at times– and this is
the very same boy that he had insulted, called a "pig–of–a–louse" (Forbes 4), and bossed around like
he was inferior on a daily basis, just mere months prior. Presently, he instead maintains a steady
relationship with the elder ex–apprentice, even assisting him in his day–to–day tasks at times.
Johnny also conquers his pridefulness not only by humbling himself, but by exalting others and their
assets, as Mr. Lapham had once taught him. For example, he basks in the positive attention Goblin
gets, as many admire the horse for his beauty. The author writes that Johnny "loved the horse. He
loved the admiration he saw on every face [from people in the streets]... all stopped to stare when
Goblin played" (Forbes 180). This is a key example of Johnny enjoying the positive attention and
respect his horse gets–

Theme Of Flowers In Chronicle Of A Death Foretold
One of the most universal symbols of beauty is the flower. Their delicate buds hold such great
beauty, while being so fragile and temporary. Despite their magnificence, flowers must remain
stationary. It is a prison, yet no one thinks beyond the simplicity of a pretty flower. Like women,
flowers are seen at face value without any concern for the lack of freedom, opportunity, and
expression they have. Women are meant to be seen just how society expects and not any other way.
In Chronicle of a Death Foretold, female characters face the serious consequences of societal
expectations and views on sexuality. Gabriel Garcia Marquez uses the motif of flowers to symbolize
women and their virginity to demonstrate the confinement of women in society.
The author Marquez uses character names to illustrate the societal preference of virginity. For
example, the character Flora Miguel, who "enjoyed a certain floral quality," is named after flowers
(66). By using curious diction with the word "certain," Marquez points to an almost undefinable yet
intriguing feature. Since the narrator is a man, it demonstrates male interest in women's sexuality.
Because the author says it is due to "floral quality," the interest comes from virginity specifically.
Further proving the value of virginity, Divina Flor exemplifies this ideal. Divina Flor is not simply
named after flowers, but rather her name has a more specific meaning. When translated to English,
her name means divine flower. Marquez names her

Tone Of One Perfect Rose
At first glance the poem One Perfect Rose may seem like a poem about love and romance, but
further analysis shows the opposite. The first two stanzas of the poem can be misleading, as they
lead one to believe that it's a romantic moment to a past memory. However, with the poems sudden
change in tone, the third stanza takes on more of a cynical view. You hear the dissatisfaction in the
speaker's tone, as she wants more. The title conveys irony, as it shows that the rose is anything but
perfect. In a way the poem seems to describe Parkers feelings about life, even though she had a lot
going for her she just wasn't satisfied. Because of the shift in tone, the poems entire meaning goes
from sweet to a bitter recount. The first opening line of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She wants more than a rose, when she states. "Why is it no one ever sent me yet one perfect
limousine do you suppose?" The word "limousine" implies that she maybe materialistic. Upon this,
as the reader, one has to understand the context in which the poem was written in. It was written in
1937 when the Great Depression occurred. Because Parker faced many financial uncertainties, all
she really wanted was to be sure she was financially stable. The phrase "one perfect rose" is
repeated throughout stanza 1 and stanza 2, thus making it a refrain. On the other hand, the mocking
repetition of "one perfect" indicates the underlining attitude of the speaker in the last stanza.
Suddenly the phrase "one perfect rose" becomes disrupted when the speaker desires "one perfect
limousine." Moreover, the tone suddenly changes when she states, "do you suppose?". The question
is implied to the reader as the poem takes on more of a conversational tone. The poem suddenly
takes on more of a sarcastic tone, as a lot of Dorothy Parkers poem are really known for. They are
known for their witty remarks and irony. Line 11 and 12 states, "Ah no, it's always just my luck to
get one perfect rose." The fact that she states "ah no" signifies disappointment, but it also becomes
more conversational instead of formal. In line 11 the word, "just my luck" actually means that

After leaving the Lapham family, being jobless, and starving Johnny decided to use his last resort,
which was the silver cup that was given to him by his mother. The entire family rejected Johnny

The changed scenes inside Derbyshire's have been framed for the most part as an outcome of the

What Makes This Catch The Eye?
This garment, inspired by nature, instantly grabs someone's attention. Instantly, someone can tell it
has many natural elements: the floral chest and leaf pattern. The garment is filled with various
textures and color that give it its calming, natural feel. The texture has natural elements of leafs and
flowers that are emphasized by the bold lines surrounding the element. It even has colors that
resemble wood with a pop of color from the flowers. With more thought, it seems as if it resembles
woodlands with a patch of colorful flowers. It seems as if it carries out it its purpose. It has a
woodland theme, looks unique, and has interesting textures. However, questions start to emerge.
What makes this catch the eye? Why is it interesting? How does it work so well? To determine this,
the garment must be broken down in the individual elements of design (texture, color, balance,
unity, shape, form, line, variety, form, proportion and scale, symmetry, and space) and evaluated.
The outfit itself primary in flat with only one primary area with actual texture: the upper torso. The

Themes Of Johnny Tremain
Esther Forbes published Johnny Tremain in 1943, when the United States was in the middle of
World War II, in which the United States and the United Kingdom ,yet another way to refer to Great
Britain, were allies. But that's okay because Forbes makes it clear that England is not the real enemy
but the real enemy is any government that threatens the liberty of its people or just doesn't stand up
for them. So, in a roundabout way, Johnny Tremain is partly about the importance of workman's
comp laws. Johnny Tremain, the book and the movie, were very different because of the events and
the characters; and similar because of the plot, and timeline. Johnny Tremain, an orphan is
apprenticed to silversmith Emphraim Lapham. When we meet Johnny, his entire identity is wrapped
up in being a fantastic silversmith. He's career driven since he is only an apprentice, but he's running

Theme Of The Prison Door

  • 1. Theme Of The Prison Door The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne opens with a scene that introduces some of the major themes of the novel. The chapter, titled "The Prison Door", contains little action, and instead sets the scene and introduces many themes and symbols in the novel. A crowd of somber, dreary–looking puritans have gathered outside the door of a prison in seventeenth–century Boston. The building's heavy oak door are studded with iron spikes, and the prison appears to have been constructed to hold dangerous criminals. The one incongruity in the otherwise drab scene is the rosebush that grows next to the prison door. The narrator suggests that it offers a reminder of Nature's kindness to the condemned; for his tale, he says, it will provide either a "sweet moral blossom" or else some relief in the face of unrelenting sorrow and gloom. It is through "The Prison Door" that the major themes of the novel such as sin, punishment, puritanism, and nature are introduced to the novel. The scene opens with a crowd of men and women assembled near a dilapidated wooden prison. The narrator says that this particular prison was most likely built upon the founding of Boston and then goes on to describe prisons as the "black flower of civilized society." At this point, the theme of sin and punishment is introduced into the novel. Prisons are a "black flower" because though they are meant to punish sin (represented by the color black in the novel), they would not exist without sin. Prisons feed on sin in ... • 3. Analysis Of The Book ' The Wolf ' Spring had finally sprung and Sophie just couldn't waste such a beautiful day. "I think I'm going to take a walk!" she said to herself as she was admiring her blooming flowers. After she watered all of her flowers she went back into the house to put on her jacket. It had been such a cold winter, it made Sophie so happy to be able to enjoy the warm weather. The birds were chirping and Sophie couldn't help but hum along. She was nearing the lake when she heard crying. "Hello? Is someone there?" she asked. "Yes! I'm over here! I'm stuck in the rose bush" a voice answered. She ran over and found a wolf stuck in the thorny branches. "Don't move around or you'll keep scratching yourself!" she warned. "Okay, just please get me out!" the wolf replied. Very carefully, Sophie moved the branches and the wolf was able to crawl out. "Thank you, thank you! I had been trapped in there all morning" the wolf said. "You're welcome. What's your name?" Sophie asked. "Clark." "Hi Clark, I'm Sophie. You have some pretty bad scratches on your arm. Come with me back to my house, I'll clean and bandage them for you." "Okay, thank you! Any chance you'd have something to eat? I'm kind of hungry." "Sure, I made some soup this morning." Sophie took Clark back to her house. She cleaned up his cuts and wrapped them in bandages. She fed him some soup and before she knew it, he had fallen asleep. "Clark...Clark...wake up!" Sophie said as she shook Clark from his dream. "Hi Sophie, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The hero/heroine's virginity acts as a source of strength that protects them from harm. Their lack of fear also saves them from death. Virginity acts as power of potentia, either literally or symbolically and results in a release of an observed transformative power. The bloody chamber serves a different symbolic purpose of transformation for Beauty in "The Courtship of Mr Lyon", the heroine in "The Tiger's Bride" and the Countess in "The Lady of the House of Love". Beauty transformed into a snobbish woman who became obsessed with materialistic objects and her looks. Her epiphytic moment for redemption occurs when the spaniel is at the door, thinking the Beast has come to collect her. She acts as a supplementary element, who offers companionship to the Beast. • 13. Light In The Forest Johnny Tremain Analysis Compare and Contrast Essay Rough Draft The Light in the Forest, by Conrad Richter, and Johnny Tremain, by Esther Forbes, are two incredibly distinct novels, each with their own similarities and differences when compared to one another. True Son, the protagonist in Light in the Forest, is a fifteen–year–old boy raised by a tribe of Delaware Indians for the past eleven years of his life. Though he is biologically American, he wholeheartedly considers himself a full blooded Indian. This not only creates turmoil when he is forcibly moved to his biological white family but causes True Son confusion when he is forced to choose between not only his two families but his two other identities as well. On the other hand, Johnny Tremain, the protagonist in the novel Johnny Tremain, faces a completely different situation for he is a fourteen–year old boy living in colonial Boston. He is at first entirely self–centered and arrogant due to his prodigious gifts as a silversmith apprentice. However, when an unfortunate injury results in him having a crippled hand, this destroys any chance of him being an adequate silversmith. He faces humiliation but through many struggles and difficulties transforms into a patriotic man. Through analyzing the two novels, there were many similarities and differences found. Similarities include the difficult journey they both encounter as well as their similar behavior. On the contrary, both individuals differ through their race and how they were brought up. Both True Son and Johnny Tremain desire to stay in a comfortable setting. They greatly enjoy their life and make no wish to change it. And yet, both characters were forced to face hardships which ultimately changes both their situation as well as their perspectives in life. For instance, Johnny Tremain had a comfortable position in life. He was widely considered the most talented young silversmith in Boston. Though he was egotistic, he was destined for a bright future. Regrettably, when molten silver disfigured his hand he lost his chance at ever becoming a silversmith and can no longer find skilled work. • 23. Use Of Birds In Poetry The use of nature in poetry and stories has a long history in Ireland going back to the early use of bird song to describe divine messages. (Melia, 1999). The natural world gives writers the ability to communicate expression through the use as symbols and Celtic traditions describe how animals and birds were important parts of society. The use of natural world subjects give a poet such as Oscar Wilde the inspiration for some of his best works in poetry and short story. Oscar Wilde's use of birds and how they are used throughout his writings show great examples of the use of the natural world. The connection to nature in Irish literature can be shown by examining some of Oscar Wilde's most important works such as The Nightingale and the Rose and The Happy Prince as well as poems such as Magdalen Walks. • 25. The Is An Ancient One, Dating Back Well Before The Time Of... Records show that the practice of grafting is an ancient one, dating back well before the time of Christ It was once believed that any plant could be grafted on any other. This probably arose from observations made in tropical areas where seeds sometimes lodged in the cleft of a tree where seeds germinated and grew in the organic matter that had accumulated there. However, today, we know that only very closely related plants are capable of being grafted. Many forms of grafting are practiced, and the technique known as budding is widely used in the production of fruit trees, roses, and ornamental trees and shrubs. Without the practice of grafting many of the popular varieties we know today, such as the Delicious Apple or the Peace Rose, could not have been maintained. Wrong was the man who wrote in 1889: We doubt if there is a greater nuisance in the whole practice of gardening than the art of grafting. It is very clever, it is very interesting, but it will be no great loss if it is abolished altogether. While the technique of budding generally works best during June, July and August, many other forms of grafting are done just before plants begin new growth and are still dormant. Three terms are important in any discussion of grafting: stock, scion, and cambium. The stock is the rooted lower portion of a plant on which the graft is to be made. The scion is the shoot, bud or piece of twig to be fastened on the stock. Most important of all is the cambium, a thin layer of pale ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

When the pavilion was there at the beginning of the story, Susan showed great excitement for going there and described it as a fun place to be. • 29. Analysis Of The Little Prince The novel The Little Prince was originally published in 1943. Antoine De Saint was a pioneering aviator, a prominent aristocrat, poet and writer, and thus the novel; The Little Prince was inspired by his real–life experiences (Sís). He only added a few fictionalized imageries to enhance the merit and understandability of the book to his audience (Cengage Learning Gale). The book has demonstrated massive success as it has sold over 140 million copies worldwide translated into more than 300 languages and dialects, and thus becoming the best–selling book ever published (Howard and Mortensen). More significantly, this novel is one of the most key books because of its thoughtful and introspective nature, and hence bringing hope to human beings. The little prince is one of the children's must–read handbooks with philosophy for grown–ups. This is as a result of the book's significant poetic and optimistic reflections primarily on the existence of human beings (Cengage Learning Gale). The novel demonstrates the author's practical artistic skills through his lyrical, charming and well–illustrations made throughout the book, sweeping the audience into a whirl hood of childhood fancy (Saint–Exupéry). The Little Prince is a simple book with a combination of satire, philosophy, science, imagination and childish vivacity that can command the attention of grown–ups and children's hearts and minds. Through his book, Antoine De Saint–Exupery communicates important values that "grown–ups" overlooks more often in everyday life. The Little Prince is written as a children's novel. However, it be can analyze at various diverse levels. Therefore, it's important to note that a "child" or an "adult" is not defined by the age, but rather by the state of mind (Weber and Probert). Although The Little Prince is designed as a childhood novel, it makes several explanations and clarifications regarding human life and nature, and hence it's optimistic. For instance, The Little Prince is depicted as one of the two protagonists of the story. Hence, after leaving his home planet and his rose which he adored so much, he traveled around the world, ending up on Earth. He was puzzled by the behavior of grown–ups (Howard and Mortensen). • 31. Essay on Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter In Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter, the theme of sin viewed through the prism of many colors is the essence of the novel. The protagonist, Hester, her child, Pearl, and the Reverend Dimmesdale all live in a Puritanical society in Boston, and are subject to the Puritans' strict religious beliefs and rigid attitudes. Exposed to sin and the temptation of its concealment in varying degrees, these characters evolve through the novel in different ways. Hawthorne brilliantly displays these differences by juxtaposing extreme and vivid colors—concealment is shown in dark, drab, and gloomy shades, while openness has a bright and colorful sheen. In this way, Hawthorne establishes a dichotomy between lack of color and color in order to show ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Hawthorne creates a bleak setting with "A throng of bearded men, in sad–colored garments and gray, steeplecrowned hats" and a dark prison with a "beetle–browed and gloomy front" which was further shadowed by "weather stains and other indications of age, which gave a yet darker aspect" to the prison. From the darkness of this setting, a vividly contrasting images emerges of "a wild rose bush" that thrives with "delicate gems" and "fragile beauty". Hawthorne sets this colorful bush near "burdock, pig–weed, apple–peru, and such unsightly vegetation" which he describes as the "black flowers". In this way, Hawthorne establishes the dichotomy between color and lack of color at the outset of the book, and relates it to the personalities of the main characters. The astonishing survival of a sole colorful rose bush amidst the dark weeds symbolizes the potential for Hester and Pearl to survive the cruel puritanical punishments of the dark Puritans. Just as the rose bush radiates colorfully from its surroundings, Hester gleams in contrast to the large shadow of the Puritans that falls over the scaffold area. The Puritans are dressed in dark suits, "some wearing hoods" and others "bareheaded", and the hag–like women are gray and grungy with a "coarse fibre" and unembroidered attire. Hester ... • 35. Theme Of Symbols In Sons And Lovers In Sons and lovers, D.H Lawrence has made a very clever use of symbols. The novel abounds in symbolic objects and events. Yet they are so well integrated with the narrative that they hardly ever appear obtrusive. When understood, these symbols adds to the richness of the novel and enhances our appreciation of the novel. Mark Spikla says "The symbolic scenes are extremely literal and the symbols seem to function as integral strands in the webs of emotional tensions." In Sons and Lovers, we have a host of such symbolic scenes which have a catalytic effect upon the intensity of the plot and action in the novel. The description of coal pits is symbolic. The coal pits standing at the horizon are a concrete reality. The entire life of the community depends on them. • 37. Narrative Loss And The Melancholic Reader Of Johnny Tremain In Eric Tribunella's essay "Narrative Loss and the Melancholic Reader of Johnny Tremain", the concept of failure is one of Tribunella's main focal points throughout the essay about Esther Forbes' Johnny Tremain. Tribunella argues that these failures are present because the novel lacks climax throughout the essay's entirety and without this climax there is no sense of closure in the most climatic events. One particular failure that Tribunella mentions in his essay is the failure of love triangles in the novel. Tribunella argues that there are three love triangles in Johnny Tremain but none of these are fulfilled with a "bang". Instead each one of these love triangles slowly fizzles out throughout the novel. The love triangles that are found in Forbes' Johnny Tremain are not those that represent an epic romance but instead they represent those of a childhood crush. These representations can be found in each one of the love triangles that Tribunella argues that is present in the novel. Tribunella states that one of the love triangles in the novel is between Johnny, Cilla, and Tweedie. One would believe that this love triangle would create a great conflict in the series due to the fact that Tweedie is imposing on what was theoretically Johnny's territory. Johnny was the original "golden boy" in the Lapham household and due to one accident his pedestal was taken away from him. I want Laura to have the best wedding with the most amazing flowers she choose and to not worry about having the flowers not being the way she wants them to be. When Laura's wedding caught my attention, I felt honor to be able to be part in the next step in someone's lifetime. In this project, I'll talk about the history of weddings, the flowers that were used, the creation and the packing up. The flowers or herbs were used in historical weddings since the beginning of time to show a way of love and well wishes to everyone. The first use of wedding flowers were the ancient Greeks. The flowers or plants were used to make a crown for the bride to wear and was a gift of nature. The bridesmaids would have floral decorations which were garlands, bridal bouquets and boutonnieres. Mostly the bridesmaids were to make a poesies, to make, for each guest to wear as a symbol of saying thanks. Over time, the flowers and their meanings stayed the same but the herbs lost their place in modern North American weddings. Some of the cultures and religions have intertwine herbs with flowers to celebrate the marriage with a gift of nature. Leading up to and during the Middle Ages, weddings were considered as a family and community affairs. The only main thing about a wedding was for both partners to state a consent to take one of them as a spouse. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I Am A Youth Counselor Friday September 18th, 1992 (11.39 a.m.) It was by pure coincidence and good fortune that Judy's birthday was the day after Harry's, giving Tom the perfect excuse (or so he told himself) to visit her after three and a half years of separation. He carried a single red rose in his hand, a simple gift that was all he could afford without asking Booker for money, and he loathed asking Booker for money. It had taken a long time, but he was slowing finding his independence, and he refused to take advantage of the man he loved. He knew it would take many more months of therapy before he had the confidence to re–enter the workforce, but he planned to pull his weight financially as soon as he could. While it was still a long way in the future, he hoped that one day, he could become a youth counselor. He honestly believed he had a role to play in helping those who had lost their way. • 43. Analysis Of The Book ' The Palace ' For several weeks, Proserpina had stayed with King Pluto in his palace. She spent most of her days ogling his tremendous rose gardens. She loved picking the roses and finding the small white pearl that lay within the rare ones. Red roses were her favourite, their lush, bright petals never drooping or falling, and in some circumstances, they smelled sweeter than any of the other roses. Proserpina's favourite rose of all, however, was one made entirely of rubies and emeralds. The red rubies made up the petals and the emeralds became the stem and a leaf. It was kept inside of a large glass case, where only its beauty was allowed. Every morning after Pluto brought Proserpina to his castle, he would hear her wake up in the early hours of the day, right when the sun began to rise, and watch her pick flowers through his large window overlooking his land. He was lucky that she did not know who he was, the God of the Underworld, she only thought he was the king of diamonds and stones. Coming of age stories help the reader understand the hardships that this time in one's life may have. These hardships help develop the young into an adult. In the following stories the authors utilize selected detail to convey the development into adulthood. In the first short story, The Passage by Dalton Trumbo uses special detail in order to explain the loving relationship between the father and the son. For example, the author uses the symbol of an "enormous pine" and the sentence, " his father has always preferred his company to that of other men" to show his affection for the son. The enormous pine tree that looks over the tent in which they sleep in can symbolize the paternal figure within him that looks over his son. The author also tells us that the father would rather spend time with his son than other guys, which shows the love he has for him and the time he wants to spend with him. Eventually in the passage the son tells his father that he would rather go fishing with Bill Harper. "For a little while his father didn't say thing. The he said why sure go along Joe." This sentence shows that his father had a slight hesitation with him being alright with his son going with someone else. Perhaps a bit of jealousy or sadness that the feeling wasn't mutual about fishing together. There are many interesting things hiding within the poem but there are a few specific ones I will mention. First, there are many different poetic devices used within this short poem. This includes imagery, similes, and repetition. Second, the symbol of this poem is the rose which is mentioned a few times throughout the poem. Third, the theme for "The Wisdom Of Shelley is deception. Each of these points contributes to my understanding of the poem in its own way. There are many poetic devices used throughout "The Wisdom Of Shelley". Repetition of words was the first thing that really jumped out at me. Clarke repeats the words "words words words" (4), and "loved loved loved" (15). What I believe this represents is how the character "X" only says empty words to what I presume is his family. If you need to repeat the word "loved" three times, then it starts to feel like you are only saying the words to make the other person happy. The first few lines of the poem say "You come down, after / five winters, X, / bristlin' with roses" (1–3) and this can be taken as "X" has been gone for five years showing no signs of returning. He suddenly shows up with roses one day and expects all to be forgotten and forgiven. The presumed child does not want to forgive him and forget about what happened. This really sets the mood and tone for what is going to happen in the poem. Since it is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 59. The Romance Of The Rose Analysis The Romance of the Rose was written in the 13th century by Guillaume de Lorris and Jean de Meun. De Lorris was a French poet that wrote the first section of the poem, while De Meun was a French author that wrote the second section. After de Lorris wrote the first section, he died, which lead to de Meun finishing it. Their parts are related but have many differences. As de Lorris' section is very comprehendible, de Meuns' is vaguer and requires more critical thinking. The poem has created an abundance of arguments surrounding the topic of a women's dignity and role. These arguments had immense impacts on today's pop culture. The book developed the notion of love not being an emotion, but more of a pose. They did this by making characteristics, such as Courtesy, Beauty, and Wealthy, as characters themselves to see how they would act in certain circumstances. This helps the reader believe that the authors are trying to display how these traits are treated in real life. The author states, "FIer color made her look like a new rosel and her skin was so tender that one could tear it with a tiny thorn" (de Lorris 42), which helps the reader understand how the characters names will be a big part of the poem and the moral surrounding it. It also suggests that some women are less fragile, and harder to pursue than others which is directly related to how people perceive women outside of the poem. The imagery and descriptions of the narrator's thoughts controls how the whole poem is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 61. Art Analysis Of Thomas P. Anshutz's A Rose The image I chose for this paper is titled A Rose. The image is a painting painted in oil on a canvas and was painted by Thomas P. Anshutz. The painting was produced in Pennsylvania during 1907. I researched this image on ARTstor by using the term realism and then I narrowed down my search by selecting a filter to return paintings as well as setting the geography filter to North America. The painting belongs to The Metropolitan Museum of Art's collection and is on display in the American Wing in the gallery of Images of Woman from 1880 to 1910. I selected this painting because the colour contrast of the pink dress against the dark background caught my eye. I also found the expression of the young woman to be interesting. The painting depicts a young woman in a pink dress sitting down. The background is very dark but three things can be made out by the viewer. Starting with the ground plane of the painting, an orange carpet can be seen covering the entire floor. It is patterned and contains yellows, greens and blues. The cool toned colours are darker in hue than the warm toned. Secondly, there appears to be a cabinet or a desk lining the wall behind her. The wood of the cabinetry is carved with detailed designs and is made of a dark stained wood. Despite the dark background a single red rose can be seen on top of the cabinetry. The rose looks freshly picked and shows no signs of withering in its petals. It is painted in a muted red colour that allows it to stand out on ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 63. Analysis Of Esther ForbesNovel Johnny Tremain It is often said that "pride comes before the fall"– yet, at the same time, with such a fall also comes an opportunity for one to rebound and "rise back up" again. In Esther Forbes' novel Johnny Tremain, the titular young silversmith and main protagonist of the book clearly experiences this first–hand as he goes through major character development and improvement after starting off with several glaring flaws as the plot unfolds throughout the story. Forbes, the author, teaches this valuable lesson throughout the novel that relates to many of the book's key themes. Overall, it is evident that throughout the course of the novel, Johnny develops into a truly better individual as he overcomes his pride, begins to consider others rather than ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After feeling 'down–in–the–dumps' immediately after his hand injury and thinking that "God had turned away from him" (Forbes 80), Johnny is partly motivated to improve by the positive presence of his new–found best friend, Rab Silsbee, from The Boston Observer. In Rab, he finds someone he truly looks up to as a role model and example, which is a new experience for the formerly arrogant boy. He betters himself by humbling himself, which leads him to, over time, grow far less self– centered. For instance, he treats Dove better and even treats him like a friend at times– and this is the very same boy that he had insulted, called a "pig–of–a–louse" (Forbes 4), and bossed around like he was inferior on a daily basis, just mere months prior. Presently, he instead maintains a steady relationship with the elder ex–apprentice, even assisting him in his day–to–day tasks at times. Johnny also conquers his pridefulness not only by humbling himself, but by exalting others and their assets, as Mr. Lapham had once taught him. For example, he basks in the positive attention Goblin gets, as many admire the horse for his beauty. The author writes that Johnny "loved the horse. He loved the admiration he saw on every face [from people in the streets]... all stopped to stare when Goblin played" (Forbes 180). This is a key example of Johnny enjoying the positive attention and respect his horse gets– ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 65. Theme Of Flowers In Chronicle Of A Death Foretold One of the most universal symbols of beauty is the flower. Their delicate buds hold such great beauty, while being so fragile and temporary. Despite their magnificence, flowers must remain stationary. It is a prison, yet no one thinks beyond the simplicity of a pretty flower. Like women, flowers are seen at face value without any concern for the lack of freedom, opportunity, and expression they have. Women are meant to be seen just how society expects and not any other way. In Chronicle of a Death Foretold, female characters face the serious consequences of societal expectations and views on sexuality. Gabriel Garcia Marquez uses the motif of flowers to symbolize women and their virginity to demonstrate the confinement of women in society. The author Marquez uses character names to illustrate the societal preference of virginity. For example, the character Flora Miguel, who "enjoyed a certain floral quality," is named after flowers (66). By using curious diction with the word "certain," Marquez points to an almost undefinable yet intriguing feature. Since the narrator is a man, it demonstrates male interest in women's sexuality. Because the author says it is due to "floral quality," the interest comes from virginity specifically. Further proving the value of virginity, Divina Flor exemplifies this ideal. Divina Flor is not simply named after flowers, but rather her name has a more specific meaning. When translated to English, her name means divine flower. Marquez names her ... • 67. Tone Of One Perfect Rose At first glance the poem One Perfect Rose may seem like a poem about love and romance, but further analysis shows the opposite. The first two stanzas of the poem can be misleading, as they lead one to believe that it's a romantic moment to a past memory. However, with the poems sudden change in tone, the third stanza takes on more of a cynical view. You hear the dissatisfaction in the speaker's tone, as she wants more. The title conveys irony, as it shows that the rose is anything but perfect. In a way the poem seems to describe Parkers feelings about life, even though she had a lot going for her she just wasn't satisfied. Because of the shift in tone, the poems entire meaning goes from sweet to a bitter recount. The first opening line of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She wants more than a rose, when she states. "Why is it no one ever sent me yet one perfect limousine do you suppose?" The word "limousine" implies that she maybe materialistic. Upon this, as the reader, one has to understand the context in which the poem was written in. It was written in 1937 when the Great Depression occurred. Because Parker faced many financial uncertainties, all she really wanted was to be sure she was financially stable. The phrase "one perfect rose" is repeated throughout stanza 1 and stanza 2, thus making it a refrain. On the other hand, the mocking repetition of "one perfect" indicates the underlining attitude of the speaker in the last stanza. Suddenly the phrase "one perfect rose" becomes disrupted when the speaker desires "one perfect limousine." Moreover, the tone suddenly changes when she states, "do you suppose?". The question is implied to the reader as the poem takes on more of a conversational tone. The poem suddenly takes on more of a sarcastic tone, as a lot of Dorothy Parkers poem are really known for. They are known for their witty remarks and irony. Line 11 and 12 states, "Ah no, it's always just my luck to get one perfect rose." The fact that she states "ah no" signifies disappointment, but it also becomes more conversational instead of formal. In line 11 the word, "just my luck" actually means that something unfortunate ... Jonathan Lyte, a very wealthy, successful, and popular merchant in Boston, accused Johnny of stealing one of the cups that belong to Jonathan Lyte. Luckily during the case, Cilla was there to support Johnny. According to Jonathan Lyte, someone stole one of his silver cups in August, however Johnny Tremain had showed the silver cup to Cilla on July. That proves that Johnny did not steal Jonathan Lytes silver cup and the silver cup belonged to Johnny Tremain. Johnny was betrayed by his own family, which pretended that they never knew him. The painting of my house back home that hung on the wall, just down the hallway. The only painting in the entire house was the one on that wall, with its pale exterior topped with the sky–colored blue roof, my mother's chair on the patio, and my purple bike leaning against the side. The painting hung just down the hall above a small table adorned with a purple vase of red roses. Immediately after recognizing the smell, I got up and ran as fast as my legs would carry me. • 75. What Makes This Catch The Eye? This garment, inspired by nature, instantly grabs someone's attention. Instantly, someone can tell it has many natural elements: the floral chest and leaf pattern. The garment is filled with various textures and color that give it its calming, natural feel. The texture has natural elements of leafs and flowers that are emphasized by the bold lines surrounding the element. It even has colors that resemble wood with a pop of color from the flowers. With more thought, it seems as if it resembles woodlands with a patch of colorful flowers. It seems as if it carries out it its purpose. It has a woodland theme, looks unique, and has interesting textures. However, questions start to emerge. What makes this catch the eye? Why is it interesting? How does it work so well? To determine this, the garment must be broken down in the individual elements of design (texture, color, balance, unity, shape, form, line, variety, form, proportion and scale, symmetry, and space) and evaluated. The outfit itself primary in flat with only one primary area with actual texture: the upper torso. The dress has long sleeves with an enlarged opening for the hands, giving it a classical sense. It is short, only going a few inches above the knee for a freer and flowing look. This helps to create bisymmetric balance, unify for the garment's form with the patterns, and texture on it. • 77. Themes Of Johnny Tremain Esther Forbes published Johnny Tremain in 1943, when the United States was in the middle of World War II, in which the United States and the United Kingdom ,yet another way to refer to Great Britain, were allies. But that's okay because Forbes makes it clear that England is not the real enemy but the real enemy is any government that threatens the liberty of its people or just doesn't stand up for them. So, in a roundabout way, Johnny Tremain is partly about the importance of workman's comp laws. Johnny Tremain, the book and the movie, were very different because of the events and the characters; and similar because of the plot, and timeline. Johnny Tremain, an orphan is apprenticed to silversmith Emphraim Lapham. When we meet Johnny, his entire identity is wrapped up in being a fantastic silversmith. He's career driven since he is only an apprentice, but he's running his master's shop. Johnny's natural arrogance will always be his downfall, but he slowly learns to control it, along with his naturally quick temper. From believing that he knows it all, he comes to realize how much he doesn't know, through his journey through Boston's Sons of Liberty. He violates the Sabbath laws by working on Sunday, suffers an injury to his hand by burning it with silver, and that ends his career as an artisan. He then goes to the home of rich merchant Jonathon Lyte with a silver cup given to him by his dead mother to prove than Lyte is his uncle. The merchant accuses him of having stolen ...
