Religious Influences On My Identity
My Identity
Identity is who one is considering varying perspectives and experiences. Identity is sometimes
affected in various angles. It may include aspects such a religion, family, and age.
For me, religion is one of the most significant aspects of my identity. My first encounter with
religion was months after being born when I was baptized. Since little my family has instilled the
importance of religion. For example, from the age of 5, or so, I went to church every Sunday with
my paternal grandparents. In the beginning,I did not know what it was since we were so little. As we
grew more mature I started to understand how important Catholicism was for my family and as well
for other people. Every day when we eat as a family we always thank God for everything he has
given us and we ask him to help other people. Anytime we are in rough circumstances we always ...

When we are born, we are not born with values and expectations, but we learn them from our
parents who raise us and teach us. We do not only learn through these adults teaching us, but we
learn by watching the examples they give us. As we grow up to a more mature age that we can
understand what "values" are we can use them as our own . For example, my parents have always
taught us to be respectful and educated. Every time we see someone we know or even when we
meet someone new,we ought to treat them with respect. My sister and I have even gone to Etiquette
and Protocol workshops to work on how to be more educated. Another example of how my family
has influenced my identity is the advice they give me for everyday life. My mom always tells me to
live in the present and forget about the future because I sometimes worry too much of what will
happen instead of what is happening. She also tells me not to let anyone trample you down because
you are more capable than them. This is some of the advice I will give to my kids when I'm

Religious Influences In Jay Z's Decoded
Like Chance the Rapper, Jay Z had Christian grandparents that exposed him to Christianity.
However, in Jay Z's book Decoded, Jay Z explains that his religious influences in his lyrics are not
due to church being a major part of his life growing up. He revealed that living "in a place like Bed–
Stuy, church is everywhere. So is mosque. So are a thousand other ways of believing." One of the
beliefs Jay Z found was the Five Percent Nation's, as seen by his lyrics that reference their
teachings. Jay Z starts off his song "Heaven" from the Magna Carta... Holy Grail album rapping,
"Arm, leg, leg, arm, head – this is God body." He directly references the Five Percent Nation's belief
that the meaning of the word "Allah" breaks down into "Arm Leg Leg ... Show more content on

To the side of Kanye reads, "The Passion of Kanye West." The title is a direct reference to Mel
Gibson's film, The Passion of the Christ. West is portrayed as Jesus because he believes he is
"crucified in the media" and that "[his] misery is [their] pleasure." Kanye's depiction of crucifixion
mirrors Nas' crucifixion in his music video "Hate Me Now." Kanye goes even further than just
depicting himself as Jesus by claiming to be a God in his song, "I Am a God" off of his hit album
Yeesuz. Calling his album Yeesuz was enough for Kanye to receive public criticism from people
claiming blasphemy, but he defended the album title claiming, "West was [his] slave name and
Yeezus is [his] god name." Kanye further irritates critics by outright declaring, "I am a God."
Interestingly, West follows the line with "even though I'm a man of God." Kanye is acknowledging
the Five Percent Nation's belief that black men are Gods while also staying true to the Christian
belief that he must submit to God. Both religious influences from the Five Percent Nation and
Christianity have seemingly come together into Kanye's

Elsie and Her Mother in Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit
In a story of a young girl coming of age and finding her sexuality in a very religious community, it
is key to have a female figure that plays a key role for the character. A mother should play the key
role but what happens when this role is confused with a very spiritual role? Where will a young girl
turn to when her life goes against the rules society has set for her?
Jeanette has lived a sheltered life with no influence on her except for the church. Her mother is a
strict Christian with a deep resentment for things and people not within her fold. Being brought up
in a society where going against the norm is a sin. A society that shakes its head at acts of
individualism and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These differences between these two women are what make Jeanette a rounded person, if not a
confused one at first. Jeanette gained a sense a self with her mother. She knew she was to work with
the Lord and teach his words to others. Her goal in life was to go and be a missionary, to teach
others how to believe in God. Combined with this imbedded sense of self is the confidence Elsie
gave her. Elsie not only understood
the word of the Lord and came from within the society Jeanette grew up in, she had a sense of the
world around her, that the world didn?t start and stop with the preaching of the Lord. Elsie gave
Jeanette a feeling of fellowship, a deep friendship that was based on true feelings, not the Lord.
In one part of the book Elsie helps Jeanette with the transition of home schooling, which was based
on biblical texts, to public schooling. Elsie gave Jeanette a way of incorporating her biblical
background into a public school setting, even if it did shock and raise eyebrows. The older woman
gave Jeanette a much–needed avenue to express herself. At this time her mother is not too upset with
the friendship. She likes the reaction Jeanette is getting from her religious art works and other
biblical oddities that seem out of place in public school. Elsie is still seen as a fellow follower, a
follower of Jeanette?s mother.
The relationship between Elsie and her mother gets strained after Jeanette is

Religious Influence In Presidential Elections
With the United States gearing up for the 2016 presidential election, I was curious to find out how
our religion may affect voting. Considering the decline of people claiming a religious belief or
claiming to be non–believers I was interested to read this article. I was intrigued to find out that
many people still want a president who has some type of strong religious belief. Yet this year, both
Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are considered by some not to be religious at all. This article is
interesting in that it states people would rather see someone do drugs, such as marijuana or even
cheat on their spouse rather than elect someone who claims to be Atheist, or denies a belief in God.
So what people are basically saying is they would ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While the survey showed that losing our religion's influence is in fact a bad thing for our society. I
would be interested in learning which age group influenced the good or the bad feeling. I feel like
candidates today base their speeches off the wants and needs of the American people at the time. If
Americans want to hear more about the candidates religious ties or affiliation and how that will
influence their political decisions it will be delivered. If Americans want to hear less about religion
they too will oblige. Politics is a funny game. In order to stay with the majority, they have to give
the people what they want to hear. I think American's view the importance of religious beliefs in
their presidential candidate highly. Their beliefs can ultimately affect the policies and laws they put
into place during their time in office. Most of the hot topic issues in politics that are discussed today
such as gay marriage, abortion, the death penalty, war on terror, can be viewed differently by people
of various religious backgrounds. Therefore, I fell many people seek the faith of who they vote for
to align more closely with their own personal and spiritual

How Did Mesopotiefs Influence The Environment And...
How much does a society's environment and experiences influence the nature of its values and
religious beliefs? It is a question that we as a human being should ask ourselves daily in our life.
The collective nature off society environment and experiences will and indefinitely affect their
religious belief. It affects people in their daily lives, in everything they want to do or they don't want
to do. Unconsciously it becomes part of human's life no matter how hard they try to ignore it once
they adapt it it's hard to get rid of such influence. People in the past has experienced it as well as
people of modern world.
One of the oldest civilization that was affected by the society's environment and nature was
Mesopotamia. There are many ways in which a society can be affected. Mesopotamia was a
polytheistic system, which means that they believed and prayed to multiple gods not just one.
Mesopotamia culture states that the gods and deities they believed in were living realities who
affected their life (Spielvogel 11). The Mesopotamian believed their god or goddesses were living
realities who affected their life style, they had leaders who rule and prepare armies if they had to go
to the war. The priests played huge role in Mesopotamian culture, priests oversaw taking care of
deities. Priests would tell the leaders what they should do in return of benefits in their wealth, health,
soil etc. they people of Mesopotamia believed if their deities are unhappy they will punish them

Religious Influence In William Bradford's Plymouth Plantation
William Bradford, the author of the Plymouth Plantation, was a huge leader in the Puritan period. A
Puritan of descent and learning, Bradford played a leading role in in the Separatist movement and
was elected Governor of Plymouth Colony thirty–one times. Praised as a "commanding work of
literary art," Plymouth Plantation remains one of the founding works of American Literature. As for
William Bradford's writing style, he wrote in a straightforward and plain style, which is a reflection
of the way Puritans were encouraged to live their lives. Simple and humble, avoiding pride by
avoiding literary words and phrases. Puritans, such as William Bradford, was the name given in the
16th century to the more serious Protestants within the Church of England who thought the English
Reformation had not gone far enough in reforming the doctrines and structure of the church. They
wanted to purify their national church by taking out every piece of Catholic influence. William
Bradford wanted to convert every religion expect for Puritans. His main target were the Native

Religious Influence Of Tolerance In The British Colonies
Tolerance in the British colonies varied, mainly depending on the diversity levels where they were
founded. In some of the colonies, there were laws established so the importance of Christianity
would be conserved. Other colonies were welcoming to different religions, and executed either
limited or full tolerance for those religions. Unfortunately, colonies that were bigoted enough to
damage fabrications of differing religious views or the belief itself existed.
Throughout the British colonies, different laws based off of religious view were formed in order to
preserve Christianity and drive away any religion that didn't praise God. In Pennsylvania, there was
a law enacted by the founder of the province, William Penn, that denied anyone to practice any
religion that didn't recognize God as creator of the world. If anyone was to disobey this law, they
would molested or would be prejudiced for their conflicting practice. Additionally, the law stated if
someone weren't to worship God, and showed it outside of their own home, they would be
considered a disturber of peace, and would be punished appropriately. A similar law was ratified
previously in the charter of Rhode Island, where someone could be disquieted, punished, and called
in for questioning if they had an opposing opinion of religion. Other laws that reinforced
Christianity were stressed as well, like laws that prevented work on the Lord's Day, or Sunday, to
instead worship God. Again in Pennsylvania, people were

Religious Influence On Kristallnacht
Kristallnacht was one of the most horrible nights for the Jewish people . Kristallnacht is now known
as the "Night of Broken Glass" because of all the broken glass in the Jewish shops and homes. Many
different aspects of the Jewish people were affected on Kristallnacht ; religiously, physically and
financially. One aspect of Jewish lives were affected on Kristallnacht through their religion. On
Kristallnacht Jewish synagogues were burned with torches as shown in the picture "Synagogue
Burning". Synagogues are the Jewish churches where they practice their religion. The "Heydrich's
Instructions, November 1938" are the instructions that tell officers and many other government
officials what to do on the night of Kristallnacht. One of the instructions in this letter is that the

woman was "left without any income" for her children (Drexler 37). A German has stolen from this

To conclude, Jewish lives have been ruined because of Kristallnacht affecting them religiously,
physically and financially. Kristallnacht has ruined their lives by burning their synagogues, hurting

The Protestant Reformation's Influence On The Religious World
It was a chilly morning on the 31st of October, 1517 in the German town of Wittenberg. A priest
walks with papers in hand to the church and, stepping up to the wooden door, nails the papers to the
front of the church, posted for the town to see. Martin Luther, not knowing what he had just started,
walked away from the church beginning what has come to be known as the Protestant Reformation.
This Reformation is often viewed as a religious movement that eventually came to affect the
political and social spheres as well; Martin Luther along with other Protestants had started a
revolution. It is clear to see that the Reformation affected the religious world, is very much a critique
and ultimately a formal break with the Roman Catholic Church. Distrust and disgust with the

shaped the beliefs of the next few generations of Christians. The same writings and ideas about
religious faith did not just stay there, it eventually cause political upheaval and started a chain
reaction of the questioning of authority. While the beliefs of the Reformers obviously influenced the
religious and political world society was not left alone. Particularly marriage, being tied with
religious faith, was viewed differently among Protestants, Luther advocated the equality of worth
and status within the marriage relationship between and a man and his wife. Overall, the

What Is The Religious Influence Of Leo Tolstoy

his time spent traveling abroad, and his descriptive and immersive writing style all come together to
make him one of the most highly regarded authors of his time. Being raised in a religious, high–
class family that was full of death greatly influenced Tolstoy's writing of What I Believe, The Death
of Ivan Ilyich, and War and Peace. For example, Tolstoy's heavy religious influence from his family
greatly contributed to his writings("Tolstoy, Leo"). Tolstoy's religious influence is shown in his

Religious Influence On Public Decision-Making
Say yes to the man
Religion can weigh heavily on the decision making of Adolescent children. Many people around the
world have been introduced to religion at a young age, which has seemed to impact their growth.
Religion can play a role in children's decisions and this is why some parents introduce religion to
their kids. Religion can have positive or negative effects on children, however, the positives
outweigh the negatives. Many parents would argue that religion would help children make better
decisions, while other parents are hesitant to introduce religion to their child. Introducing religion to
children could possibly introduce them to new ideas and opportunities they would not have even
thought of. Religion can teach children many important life skills that can help them in their future.
Also religion allows children to build morals and values. As stated by Mark Joseph Stern in "Is

Tartuffe, Religion Essay
The context surrounding the period in which Tartuffe was written in, the 17th Century is
remembered as being a time of extreme power for the French Monarchy. King Louis XIV and
Cardinal Richelieu transformed France's feudal monarchy to an absolute monarchy. What must also
be noted about this time is the fact that the Catholic Church and Politicians had a great deal of
power over authors and playwrights. In this time of social and religious persecution, Molière created
Tartuffe , a comedy dealing with hypocrisy and to a great extent, religion and how religion can be
used in a negative way, to mask sin. The play is known to be offensive towards the Catholic Church
and religion in general. When it was first performed in 1664, it was censored, ... Show more content

He is at the beginning of the play seen as a God like figure, particularly to Orgon and Madame

out for being in the wrong, his persona changes to guilty and even vulnerable. This is shown in Act
III scene 6 when Damis accuses Tartuffe of trying to seduce Elmire, Tartuffe uses reverse
psychology to win Orgon over by confessing the all things awful, to an extent in which Orgon
begins to sympathise with him. It is clearly shown that Tartuffe goes to the absolute extreme when
he apologises to Orgon;
Oui mon frère, je suis un méchant, un coupable,
Un malheureux pécheur tout pleine iniquité,
Les plus grand scélérat qui jamais ait été;
Chaque instant de ma vie est change de souillures;
Elle n'est qu'un amas de crimes et d'ordures;
Et je vois que le ciel, pour ma punition,
Me veut mortifier en cette occasion. The language used is extremely depressing, almost showing
that it is out of character for Tartuffe to do such a thing, he just feels that he should confess as he is
under Orgon's roof and shouldn't make his son out to be a liar. This is what Orgon believes, and
although the audience knows differently, Damis is still asked to leave Orgon's house, showing
Orgon, a very religious man, being completely hypocritical, as he is undermining his family. Orgon

If I was given the opportunity to sit down and have a discussion with any one person, living or

old when Todd was killed. I would tell him how sweet Noah is and what a kind, loving soul he has.
Also, that he is placed in the gifted and talented classes at school. I would talk next about Nathan

how she made the honors list at college and just finished her first year there. I would tell him about

The Reformation exercises a great influence on the change of the politics structure of Europe.
Because of the Reformation, the European feudalism began to crumble. And the establishment of
Reformed or Protestant accelerates the development of bourgeoisie. Because the different countries
show the different attitude to the new religious belief, the politic changes of European countries are
in different steps. All of this illustrate that the revolution of ideology can also exercises a great

He said: "let every Christian knows: we are the priests, we didn't have differences, that is to say, our

foundation for people to accept the new political system.
2.4. The Opponent of Selling Indulgences The immediate occasion of Luther's first great protest was
the sale of indulgences by the Dominican monk John Tetzel. From early times the church authorities
had granted indulgences or remissions of penances imposed on persons guilty of mortal sins, the
condition being true penitence. At length the Church began to accept money, not in lieu of
penitence, but of the customary penances which usually accompanied it. Before 1517 Luther had
given warnings against the abuse of indulgences, without blaming the administration of the Church.
But when in that year Tetzel approached the borders of Saxony selling indulgences in the name of
the Pope, Leo X, who wanted money for the building of St. Peter's Church in Rome, Luther, with

My well intended (I say that in attempt to delude myself into believing that their arguments

intended to be a non–secular entity and that if our government was truly "of the people, for the
people, by the people" that its laws would be reflective of Christianity as the majority of the
American citizenry proclaim a Christian affiliation. This my friends is a falsehood, in fact our
founding fathers were more than aware of the implications for the future that this great experiment
posed and included safeguards in attempt to prevent the abusive relationship that tends to develop
when government policy is tempered with religion, a very wise and brave act considering the fact
that many of them were in fact people who attended church and worshipped God. These
measurements were so important to them that they outweighed any feelings of contradiction with
their personal beliefs. It is not coincidental that nowhere in the constitution is religion mentioned

The Integral Role of Religion Illustrated in Gabriel...
Religion plays an integral role in The Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Gabriel Garcia. It is
generally considered by most readers that the initial chapters don't consist of the religious and
spiritual makeup of the townspeople but in fact, religion is subliminally present even earlier, within
the title of the novel itself. The word "Death" is integrally and inextricably linked with religious
matter. After all, birth and the inevitably of death are the two most important and debatable points in
religion.
Religion is meant to be a solid force, helping society to bond better and progress in a civilized
manner. For the same purpose, religion, with its laws and codes of conduct, monitors peoples' way

First, Marquez underlines, "Both were exhausted from the barbarous work of death..." (49).
Marquez exemplifies the way in which some aspects of religion are ignored and some have great
emphasis put on them. When Roman finds out that his new bride is not a virgin, he returns her. She
is beaten savagely, and her brothers are called from the brothel to come defend the family's honor.
The hypocrisy of family is revealed as they consider honor to be a part of the religion and instead of
religiously and peacefully solve the manner, the brothers murder Santiago Nasar. The family
believes that upholding the honor is righteous, and in doing so the sin of murdering Nasar is
downplayed. Furthermore, when the brothers put down their knives in front of the priest, instead of
giving them advice or condemning them, the priest "recalled the surrender as an act of dignity" (49).
This is in total conflict with Catholicism as it is amongst the Ten Commandments that "Thou shall
not kill" and thus it illustrates that even the priest of the town has lost the knowledge of the true
religion. Marquez cements the corruption of religion as even father Amador protected the brothers
and not only him but "the lawyer stood by the thesis of homicide in legitimate defense of honor,
which was upheld by the court in good faith" (48). Marquez continues to demonstrate that the
society was lenient on the brothers due to tradition and thus it illustrates that religion was only a

On July 15, 1606, Rembrandt van Rijn was born in Leiden, Holland to father Harmen Gerritszoon

owner, deriving his last name from the wind mill that he owned in the town of Weddesteeg, and his

near the river on a network on canals. In the beginning of the 1500's, the town's population

Religious Influence On Supreme Court Cases
Influence on Decisions of Supreme Court Justices by Their Religions Hao Meng Abstract –
Religious influence on judiciary, especially when it comes to Supreme Court Justices, is a
complicated issue, and it has been controversial in U.S.. Talking about judgement for the influence,
it's not all–inclusive by only dividing them into liberals and conservatives, instead, a comprehensive
approach is to focus on specific cases. Keywords – Supreme Court Justice; religion; legislation; law;
abortion; gay rights; death penalty Introduction "Justice is not to be taken by storm. She is to be
wooed by slow advances. Substitute statute for decision, and you shift the center of authority, but
add no quota of inspired wisdom." –– Benjamin N. Cardozo[1]. In the view of many citizens,
Supreme Court Justices are like legal machines, interpreting constitution to promise American
people of equal justice. Throughout American history, numerous case laws have established the
pattern of judicial decisions of U.S., thus making little room for new legislation. However, even
Supreme Court Justices are human beings, who can be influenced by various factors. It's not that
simple to determine the inclination of a justice to his or her religious belief, political philosophy and
ideology. The essence of judicial process requires a justice to vote under any circumstance based on
law, precedents and most important, constitution. No Supreme Court Justice will say that he or she

I asked his mother Nicole G questions that Terrance did not know the answer to. The interview took
place in the living room of their home Saturday afternoon. I spent an hour observing the participant.
Terrance is a 15 year old, American Black male. He is 5'9 ft tall in height, thin built, shadow facial
hair above his lip. Also, he speaks with a deep voice due to the changes that adolescence occur at
that age. His hair was neatly trimmed and he was casually dressed in sweats and t–shirt. During the
observation, I noticed how well spoken and articulate he answered my questions. He gave eye to eye
contact when answering questions. He was confident but only gave short answers. He kept looking
at the clock because he was ready to play his PlayStation. Terrence G. comes from a single family
household. He is the oldest of seven ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, when he was four years old, Terrance had trouble expressing himself to others. He would

later, he was accepted into gifted and talented school; now he is in high school taking AP Honors
classes. Terrence acknowledges, "It was difficult, and a lot of homework in the beginning, but now I
am used to it". Terrance GPA is currently 3.5. His goal is to bring his geometry grade up to an A

day. He played in the community league in his neighborhood. He did not make tryouts in school but

The World Is The Best
As time elapses, ideas, thoughts, and view of the world tend to modify. I assume that the literature
that is present from hundred years ago until now, displays a shift of religion to nature. Religion used
to be the basis for most of the things, but as new ideas approached, nature began to replace it. Not
implying that nature completely replaced religion, but it became a new way to understand the world.
I believe there is always going to be a debate on which way to understand the world is the best.
Religious people would argue that the bible is the guide for lives and the way to control the world,
but on the other hand, science also tries to explain this idea. William Bradford, from 1590 to 1657,
on his writing "Of Plymouth Plantation," ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
How would it pleased God to see a person die in a desperate manner even if they had sin? God gives
us life and would pardon our sins if we seek for him. However, I believe the puritans, including
Bradford, felt that there was no option of forgiveness. According to what I have read in Bradford's
story, I would say that religion could make someone selfish. I am not against religion, but this is
what I conclude based on this literature. I feel this way because it seems that they just think for
themselves. They believe they are perfect and that anyone else is evil. I feel that being a religious
person, should not make them feel superior like the puritans did. I believe that in God's eye we are
all the same, but the puritans saw the Native Americans as savages and not pure. An example of this
is in the "first encounter" the puritans had with the so called savages. "Thus it pleased God to
vanquish their enemies...and by his special providence so to dispose that not any of them were either
hurt or hit..." (79) In my point of view, here is a clear example of how they are being selfish. They
are just worried about them not being hurt, but what about the savages? I feel that religion means
caring for everyone, but here I see the opposite of that. Again, how God would be pleased by an

Religion And Its Effect On Society
Religion plays a large role in today's society, it's used to comfort us in our greatest times of need as
well as explain seemingly unknowable questions, such as what is the meaning of life, why are we
here, what happens when we die, why do we suffer but now as in the past religion can be a harmful
factor in our society. It has been the cause of wars, witch hunts, and proliferated superstition. Today
there are such laws that allow a parent to deny their child adequate medical care even if it's to treat a
potentially life threatening illness. In other cases religion is cited as a reason to deny someone
access to birth control. In school's modern science is at times having to contend with creationism
which seems to be a reinterpreting of modern science and is in complete opposition with established
facts. Other times such things as sex education is taught inaccurately which then leaders to things
such as high rates of teen pregnancies and STD's spreading. In other countries these actions are at
times more extreme such as when we hear about suicide bombings, honor killing, and the like. In
this paper I will discuss a few of these topics that I find to be pertinent, yet the topics are many. I
will discuss the harms that such actions can cause to us as a society both socially and physically due
to such harmful laws, I will also discuss the social reasons as to why such actions are performed in
the first place and why they may be found to be socially acceptable. Lastly I will speak

American Religious Influence
Any thorough consideration and analysis of most historical events should include the ways in which
religion played a role. As a significant social institution, religion has massively impacted most
people's lives for millennia and its influence has continued into the present day. Bearing that in
mind, religion offers a useful lens through which one might view and explore history–especially
huge swaths of history. Although most world religions were established in the pre–historic, ancient,
and classical eras, they continue to inspire and impact the course of human history into the present
day. The contours of modern history, from about the sixteenth century onwards, have especially
been carved by religious influences. This essay will address ... Show more content on

Jinnah was a part of the Pakistan Movement, which agitated for a new state for Muslims. Those
within this movement typically embraced a very conservative interpretation of the Muslim faith
("Overview of Muslim History," web). The increasing popularity of conservative and fundamental
Islam and the ways in which intellectual figures began tying it to the state has had been mirrored in
other global regions in the course of the twentieth and twenty–first centuries. Religion has played a
role in American culture and society, for example, since the colonial period but it is understood there
is a distinction between church and state. In the twentieth century, that line became blurred with the
Scopes trial, the invocation of religion with regard to various international conflicts, and the rise of
the Moral Majority in which conservative politicians claimed their Christian faith would inform
policy decisions (Jenkins, web). With regard to the Scopes Trial in Tennessee, the 1919 text A

necessity of discouraging the teaching of biological evolution. The author of book repeatedly
conflates Tennesseans' moral fiber with the ways in which the state government conducted itself:

5], is used to portray terror and torment. The symbolism of the frescoes in the form of the maenads,
satyrs, Silenus, pan pipes, goats, the thyrsus, and the casting off of masks all suggest that the
depictions are indeed Dionysian images. However, it was not just prior Dionysian depictions, which
exemplify the influence of earlier Hellenistic work on the Villa of the Mysteries. The influence of
Hellenistic sculpture is also evident. Hellenistic sculpture often portrayed heightened emotional
states, as is exemplified by the Laocoon and His Sons [Fig. 6]. Similarly, pained expressions can be
seen on many of the frescoes from the initiation chamber. For example, a look of tortured anguish
can be seen on the face of the initiate in the seventh scene, Girl undergoing the ordeal. We also see
the use of contrapposto forms, which characterized Hellenistic sculpture such as the aforementioned
Laocoon and His Sons, as well as the Winged Victory of Samothrace [Fig.7]. This Hellenistic use of
contrapposto form can be seen in the pose of the bewildered initiate as she prepares herself for the
katabasis (journey into the underworld). The Winged Victory of Samothrace also embodies the
Hellenistic use of diaphanous drapery, revealing the pose of the figure underneath. In the Girl
undergoing the ordeal drapery is likewise used to reveal the bodily form of the initiate rather than to
conceal her body. Since the scenes depict the rite of a Dionysian

Religious Influence on Adolescent Development in Oranges...
Adolescence is a time of growth and development for a child not only physically but socially,
sexually and artistically. Influences such as religion can impose changes upon this development,
altering it to something it may never have morphed into otherwise. Religion can either be
comforting or confusing depending on the approach. It can drive one to better understanding herself
or completely steer her away from the church all together as a way of escaping constraints. In the
novel Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit, the reader sees Jean question how religion fits into her choice
of lifestyle. Trying to hold on to what she has known all her life may in turn affect how she interacts
socially with others, her sexual orientation and her artistic development as a writer. "Children obey
your parents because you belong to the Lord, for this is the right thing to do. 'Honor your father and
mother.' This is the first commandment with a promise: If you honor your father and mother, 'things
will go well for you and you will have a long life on earth,'" (Ephesians ????). Jeanette is raised by

my time, and how I act. My faith has shown me evidence of the resilience I've had towards the
inherited oppression in my life. I am now more compassionate and have a lot more empathy towards

my social work practice and relationships.
In systems of oppression, power accrues to those who most closely approximates the mythical norm

The reader will feel sympathy for the Grandmother during this dangerous situation, nevertheless it 's
her actions because what she says progresses and that causes the reader to pause and actually
question the character of the Grandmother. The Misfit's accomplices take her family, as they 're

and selflessness, even by people who propagate the concept, is forgotten once the individual is
vulnerable.
Whereas O'Connor will have hints of existential philosophy with reference to the individual, she is
ultimately influenced deeply by her Catholic upbringing. This ends up in the Grandmother being a
highly religious character, perpetually asking the Misfit if he prays. Whereas on the surface it might
seem obvious the grandmother is a more religious person than the Misfit , but in

Religious Influences
In the United States people are allowed to think and live freely, there are laws so that the population
has the opportunity to believe, follow, or praise whomever they please. But do these laws really
abide by everyone's beliefs? It is obvious that the United States is changing its view points from its
traditional way of thinking and progressing to a more tolerant stance which is more excepting of
everyone; for example, gay marriage was legalized during June 2015. But for issues like abortion, it
is still a controversial topic due to opinion and religious stance. Religion can be a great thing for an
individual, but should not be able to affect the human rights of anybody else. Across the world
people tend to inherit their religious preferences from there family. For example, in the United
States about 70.6% of the population says they are a type of Christian (Wormald). Even though the

Conflicts over Religion
How did religious conflicts influence colonization?
Another chief source of conflict was religion. The Protestant Reformation challenged the authority
of the Roman Catholic Church, and Catholics and Protestants struggled for religious, economic, and
political power. Alliances changed when new rulers assumed power; for instance, a country that was
officially Protestant one day could become Catholic the next. Likewise, countries that were allies

Catholics and Protestants used any means possible to conquer and convert each other, including
laws, taxes, threats, torture, imprisonment, and war. Jews in Europe were typically tolerated but
forced to live in ghettos, isolated from Christian communities. Anyone who dissented from the
established religion had a good reason to leave. To members of a persecuted group who wanted to
live in a community of like–minded people, the "New World" must have been very tempting.
Roanoke: First English Colony in North America
The story of Roanoke, the first English colony in North America, shows some of the ways in which
political, economic, and religious competition affected colonization. In 1585, Queen Elizabeth I of
England agreed to support the Dutch against the Spanish. She gave a charter of land to an English
noble, Sir Walter Raleigh, to establish a colony. This colony would supply the English warships that
would fight the Spanish.
However, the plan failed when colonists discovered the warships could not navigate the Roanoke
harbor's shallow waters. The expedition left more than 100 settlers to establish the colony. England
left these colonists alone for three years while it fought against Spain. When a supply ship finally
arrived, the Roanoke Colony was deserted. To this day, nobody knows what happened to the

Hospitality: The Madonna Of 115th Street
Hospitality is defined as the friendly and generous reception and entertainment of guests, visitors, or
strangers. Hospitality is something that can be seen everywhere, regardless of geographical location,
religion, etc. This initially sparked my interest because hospitality is something does not require
anything special to do. Everywhere a person goes, hospitality can be seen in some way, shape, or
form.
The Madonna of 115th Street is an amazing example of hospitality throughout history. The excerpt
details the days and nights of the Festa. On July 16th, the great bell in the campanile of the church of
Our Lady of Mount Carmel announces that the festa had begun. This fetsa unites several Italian
communities from those in Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and California. Preparation for
this festival can take weeks at a time, houses are cleaned from head to toe in anticipation of housing
relatives visiting from other states. For the next few weeks the community gathers together in the
streets and celebrates greatly from sunrise to sunset. Music, dancing, fires, festivals, everything is
prominent in the streets as the Italian community seeks to express itself. The festa is a time to come
together and create a sense of community. Religious foundations, sharing of food, parades, all of this
signifies what it is to be a part of the Festa. Hospitality is creating a warm and welcome
environment to those around you. Everything about the Festa signifies these qualities.

There comes a time when old family traditions and old religious traditions come to some sort of end
or gets to be less of a "big deal". The norms of yesterday's society are fading quickly and are
becoming more modern, thus having a more modern society. Religion has been around since the
dawn of man and is suddenly starting to fade off into the distance. Religion has changed but is it for
better or for worse? Religious participation is declining among Americans even though religion is
still very popular. According to the latest Religious Landscape Study by the Pew Research Forum,
the percentage of Americans who believe in God, attend religious services and pray daily has
declined significantly in the last four years, especially among adolescents. The drop in religious

Influence Of Paul Tillich On Religious Language
Critically assess the views of Paul Tillich on religious language.

In this essay I am going to critically assess the views of Paul Tillich's views on religious language. I
will first start by critically assessing Paul Tillich's theory of religious language being presented as
symbols and his rejections of signs. I will then conclude and provide a short summary before
moving on to views for and against his ideas, before stating my own thoughts.
Paul Tillich was a German– American theologian who believed that it is possible to speak
meaningfully about metaphysical concepts and from this he came up with the theory that religious
language, because it is symbolic in nature, has an overwhelming effect upon humans. Tillich argued

What Tillich mean's by this is that we don't just see the object as it is but we see beyond the object
and the meaning of the object. The second main function is that symbols participate in that to which
they point, this is through the seeing of the symbol which ultimately leads a person to seeing the
significance of the object. Tillich believed the third main function was that symbols open up levels
of reality that otherwise are closed to us. By this he means that it is a way of us explaining things
that would be ineffable otherwise, for example, explaining God. The final main function according
to Tillich is that symbols open up the levels and dimensions of the soul that correspond to those
levels of reality; this means that symbols open up our soul to the real world.
Tillich further argued that symbolic language operates in a similar way that a piece of music, art
work or poetry might. This is because they can heave a deep overwhelming effect upon us that we
can't explain or can only explain in a limited way and therefore, the person listening will not
understand the effect unless they have felt the same effect of the same piece of art. Also, symbols,
like artwork can open up new levels of reality for us and offer a new outlook on life that we would
not previously of had, without looking at the symbol/art.
Tillich maintained that religious language is a symbolic way of pointing towards the ultimate reality,
the vision of God which he

Religious Influence On Religion And Environmental...
Did you know that burying the dead underground is a Christian practice? Many practices and rituals
like this contribute to the environment in many ways you never would've imagined. Religious
influence on the environment is stronger that environmental influence on religion because different
religions contribute practices and architecture to contribute to their religious landscape.
Religions use architecture to create many holy sites. In christianity, there are many holy sites in
Jerusalem, bethlehem, Yatharth, and Sea of Galilee. In Jerusalem there is the site of Jesus
crucifixion, and the church of Holy Sepulchre, where is believed that Jesus tomb is. Many christian
pilgrims go to Jerusalem to visit many of its holy sites. In Buddhism, there are also many holy sites.
One is the Lumbini in India; which is where Siddhartha was born. Another is the Bodhgaya in India
where he attained enlightenment and became the Buddha known. Many Buddhist visit many of this
sites to fully visualise how many things have happened to Siddhartha. Another Religion that has
many religious sites is Hinduism. There is the Kaaba; which is the holiest and most sacred place in
Islam. According to that religion the prophet Abraham and his son Ishmael built it as a symbol of
House of God. Another place is The Prophet Mosque which is in Medina. The prophet Mohammad

Religion In James Agee's A Death In The Family
Whether a person is religious or not, everyone has a different viewpoint on religion. Some people
see religion as a helping hand, something that is meant to do good. Others see it as a negative force
used for "evil" and to cause harm. A lot of people have no opinion on the matter whatsoever. One of
the main themes in James Agee's novel is religion and the causes of it. In A Death in the Family, the
characters are very set in stone with their beliefs. While one character turns to their religion for
comfort after a tragedy, another uses a person's lack of beliefs as a reason not to perform an act for
their family. Throughout Agee's novel, religion is used as a constructive force for some characters
and destructive for other characters.

Religious Influence In The Aztec's Judicial System
The Aztec Empire upheld a very sophisticated, potent, and harsh legal system. The judicial system
they had resembles a modern one today: it was made up of multiple courts with differing levels of
jurisdiction, such as trial courts, appellate courts, and a supreme court. Moreover, citizens could
appeal rulings to a higher court if they did not agree with the ruling they were given from the judge.
Although the Aztecs were very religious, they preferred to be swift and empirical when it came to
the law, choosing to judge a criminal without their religious beliefs interfering. This, however, did
not apply to the sentences and punishments given to the criminals. Some sentences were given
without their religion interfering, such as slavery and mutilation. In other cases, punishments, such
as human sacrifice, were for a religious purpose. These harsh sentences and punishments helped the
Aztec Empire effectively instill fear into the people, which helped maintain control.
The court system was comprised of various courts with different levels of jurisdiction. These courts

Religion Affects Daily Life
How does Religion Affect Daily Lives?
" The purpose of religion is to control yourself, not to criticise others."– Dalai Lama. Religion is not
something people blindly follow for the hope of reaching heaven. At one point or another in life,
every person encounters the moment where they make the decision of being an active religious
person, a religious person but don't attend church, or don't believe in a superior power. Whether a
person chooses option one, two, or three, each choice brings consequences and a different life with
that choice. People live a different kind of life, with different goals to reach, and what kind of life a
person may want to live. Religion has a profound effect on people's daily lives, and the areas it
affects are work life, family life, and the standards a person holds.
Work Life
It happens to everyone, people are at work (or school) and have a project due on Monday, but they
see the clock ticking closer and closer to 5pm, and have that urge to slip out a few mins early so they
can get ahead of schedule on ordering the wings and pizza and getting good movie tickets. The
consequence of doing this is the person having to choose whether to finish the project on Saturday,
Sunday, or if the person really wants to push it, Monday morning. So what option are you going to
take?
Work Smarter, Not Harder
Full time committed religious people know the regular weekend schedule. Saturday is the day to
sleep in, cook some good breakfast, and take the kids

Religious Identity Shaped by Family Faith

  • 1. Religious Influences On My Identity My Identity Identity is who one is considering varying perspectives and experiences. Identity is sometimes affected in various angles. It may include aspects such a religion, family, and age. For me, religion is one of the most significant aspects of my identity. My first encounter with religion was months after being born when I was baptized. Since little my family has instilled the importance of religion. For example, from the age of 5, or so, I went to church every Sunday with my paternal grandparents. In the beginning,I did not know what it was since we were so little. As we grew more mature I started to understand how important Catholicism was for my family and as well for other people. Every day when we eat as a family we always thank God for everything he has given us and we ask him to help other people. Anytime we are in rough circumstances we always ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When we are born, we are not born with values and expectations, but we learn them from our parents who raise us and teach us. We do not only learn through these adults teaching us, but we learn by watching the examples they give us. As we grow up to a more mature age that we can understand what "values" are we can use them as our own . For example, my parents have always taught us to be respectful and educated. Every time we see someone we know or even when we meet someone new,we ought to treat them with respect. My sister and I have even gone to Etiquette and Protocol workshops to work on how to be more educated. Another example of how my family has influenced my identity is the advice they give me for everyday life. My mom always tells me to live in the present and forget about the future because I sometimes worry too much of what will happen instead of what is happening. She also tells me not to let anyone trample you down because you are more capable than them. This is some of the advice I will give to my kids when I'm ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Religious Influences In Jay Z's Decoded Like Chance the Rapper, Jay Z had Christian grandparents that exposed him to Christianity. However, in Jay Z's book Decoded, Jay Z explains that his religious influences in his lyrics are not due to church being a major part of his life growing up. He revealed that living "in a place like Bed– Stuy, church is everywhere. So is mosque. So are a thousand other ways of believing." One of the beliefs Jay Z found was the Five Percent Nation's, as seen by his lyrics that reference their teachings. Jay Z starts off his song "Heaven" from the Magna Carta... Holy Grail album rapping, "Arm, leg, leg, arm, head – this is God body." He directly references the Five Percent Nation's belief that the meaning of the word "Allah" breaks down into "Arm Leg Leg ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To the side of Kanye reads, "The Passion of Kanye West." The title is a direct reference to Mel Gibson's film, The Passion of the Christ. West is portrayed as Jesus because he believes he is "crucified in the media" and that "[his] misery is [their] pleasure." Kanye's depiction of crucifixion mirrors Nas' crucifixion in his music video "Hate Me Now." Kanye goes even further than just depicting himself as Jesus by claiming to be a God in his song, "I Am a God" off of his hit album Yeesuz. Calling his album Yeesuz was enough for Kanye to receive public criticism from people claiming blasphemy, but he defended the album title claiming, "West was [his] slave name and Yeezus is [his] god name." Kanye further irritates critics by outright declaring, "I am a God." Interestingly, West follows the line with "even though I'm a man of God." Kanye is acknowledging the Five Percent Nation's belief that black men are Gods while also staying true to the Christian belief that he must submit to God. Both religious influences from the Five Percent Nation and Christianity have seemingly come together into Kanye's ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Elsie and Her Mother in Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit In a story of a young girl coming of age and finding her sexuality in a very religious community, it is key to have a female figure that plays a key role for the character. A mother should play the key role but what happens when this role is confused with a very spiritual role? Where will a young girl turn to when her life goes against the rules society has set for her? Jeanette has lived a sheltered life with no influence on her except for the church. Her mother is a strict Christian with a deep resentment for things and people not within her fold. These differences between these two women are what make Jeanette a rounded person, if not a confused one at first. Jeanette gained a sense a self with her mother. She knew she was to work with the Lord and teach his words to others. Her goal in life was to go and be a missionary, to teach others how to believe in God. Combined with this imbedded sense of self is the confidence Elsie gave her. Elsie not only understood the word of the Lord and came from within the society Jeanette grew up in, she had a sense of the world around her, that the world didn?t start and stop with the preaching of the Lord. Elsie gave Jeanette a feeling of fellowship, a deep friendship that was based on true feelings, not the Lord. In one part of the book Elsie helps Jeanette with the transition of home schooling, which was based on biblical texts, to public schooling. Elsie gave Jeanette a way of incorporating her biblical background into a public school setting, even if it did shock and raise eyebrows. The older woman gave Jeanette a much–needed avenue to express herself. At this time her mother is not too upset with the friendship. She likes the reaction Jeanette is getting from her religious art works and other biblical oddities that seem out of place in public school. Elsie is still seen as a fellow follower, a follower of Jeanette?s mother. The relationship between Elsie and her mother gets strained after Jeanette is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Religious Influence In Presidential Elections With the United States gearing up for the 2016 presidential election, I was curious to find out how our religion may affect voting. Considering the decline of people claiming a religious belief or claiming to be non–believers I was interested to read this article. I was intrigued to find out that many people still want a president who has some type of strong religious belief. Yet this year, both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are considered by some not to be religious at all. This article is interesting in that it states people would rather see someone do drugs, such as marijuana or even cheat on their spouse rather than elect someone who claims to be Atheist, or denies a belief in God. So what people are basically saying is they would ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While the survey showed that losing our religion's influence is in fact a bad thing for our society. I would be interested in learning which age group influenced the good or the bad feeling. I feel like candidates today base their speeches off the wants and needs of the American people at the time. If Americans want to hear more about the candidates religious ties or affiliation and how that will influence their political decisions it will be delivered. If Americans want to hear less about religion they too will oblige. Politics is a funny game. In order to stay with the majority, they have to give the people what they want to hear. I think American's view the importance of religious beliefs in their presidential candidate highly. Their beliefs can ultimately affect the policies and laws they put into place during their time in office. Most of the hot topic issues in politics that are discussed today such as gay marriage, abortion, the death penalty, war on terror, can be viewed differently by people of various religious backgrounds. • 5. How Did Mesopotiefs Influence The Environment And... How much does a society's environment and experiences influence the nature of its values and religious beliefs? It is a question that we as a human being should ask ourselves daily in our life. The collective nature off society environment and experiences will and indefinitely affect their religious belief. It affects people in their daily lives, in everything they want to do or they don't want to do. Unconsciously it becomes part of human's life no matter how hard they try to ignore it once they adapt it it's hard to get rid of such influence. People in the past has experienced it as well as people of modern world. One of the oldest civilization that was affected by the society's environment and nature was Mesopotamia. There are many ways in which a society can be affected. Mesopotamia was a polytheistic system, which means that they believed and prayed to multiple gods not just one. Mesopotamia culture states that the gods and deities they believed in were living realities who affected their life (Spielvogel 11). The Mesopotamian believed their god or goddesses were living realities who affected their life style, they had leaders who rule and prepare armies if they had to go to the war. A Puritan of descent and learning, Bradford played a leading role in in the Separatist movement and was elected Governor of Plymouth Colony thirty–one times. Praised as a "commanding work of literary art," Plymouth Plantation remains one of the founding works of American Literature. As for William Bradford's writing style, he wrote in a straightforward and plain style, which is a reflection of the way Puritans were encouraged to live their lives. Simple and humble, avoiding pride by avoiding literary words and phrases. Puritans, such as William Bradford, was the name given in the 16th century to the more serious Protestants within the Church of England who thought the English Reformation had not gone far enough in reforming the doctrines and structure of the church. • 7. Religious Influence Of Tolerance In The British Colonies Tolerance in the British colonies varied, mainly depending on the diversity levels where they were founded. In some of the colonies, there were laws established so the importance of Christianity would be conserved. Other colonies were welcoming to different religions, and executed either limited or full tolerance for those religions. Unfortunately, colonies that were bigoted enough to damage fabrications of differing religious views or the belief itself existed. Throughout the British colonies, different laws based off of religious view were formed in order to preserve Christianity and drive away any religion that didn't praise God. In Pennsylvania, there was a law enacted by the founder of the province, William Penn, that denied anyone to practice any religion that didn't recognize God as creator of the world. If anyone was to disobey this law, they would molested or would be prejudiced for their conflicting practice. Additionally, the law stated if someone weren't to worship God, and showed it outside of their own home, they would be considered a disturber of peace, and would be punished appropriately. A similar law was ratified previously in the charter of Rhode Island, where someone could be disquieted, punished, and called in for questioning if they had an opposing opinion of religion. Other laws that reinforced Christianity were stressed as well, like laws that prevented work on the Lord's Day, or Sunday, to instead worship God. Again in Pennsylvania, people were ... A priest walks with papers in hand to the church and, stepping up to the wooden door, nails the papers to the front of the church, posted for the town to see. Martin Luther, not knowing what he had just started, walked away from the church beginning what has come to be known as the Protestant Reformation. This Reformation is often viewed as a religious movement that eventually came to affect the political and social spheres as well; Martin Luther along with other Protestants had started a revolution. King Louis XIV and Cardinal Richelieu transformed France's feudal monarchy to an absolute monarchy. What must also be noted about this time is the fact that the Catholic Church and Politicians had a great deal of power over authors and playwrights. In this time of social and religious persecution, Molière created Tartuffe , a comedy dealing with hypocrisy and to a great extent, religion and how religion can be used in a negative way, to mask sin. This is shown in Act III scene 6 when Damis accuses Tartuffe of trying to seduce Elmire, Tartuffe uses reverse psychology to win Orgon over by confessing the all things awful, to an extent in which Orgon begins to sympathise with him. It is clearly shown that Tartuffe goes to the absolute extreme when he apologises to Orgon; Oui mon frère, je suis un méchant, un coupable, Un malheureux pécheur tout pleine iniquité, Les plus grand scélérat qui jamais ait été; Chaque instant de ma vie est change de souillures; Elle n'est qu'un amas de crimes et d'ordures; Et je vois que le ciel, pour ma punition, Me veut mortifier en cette occasion. The language used is extremely depressing, almost showing that it is out of character for Tartuffe to do such a thing, he just feels that he should confess as he is under Orgon's roof and shouldn't make his son out to be a liar. It is generally considered by most readers that the initial chapters don't consist of the religious and spiritual makeup of the townspeople but in fact, religion is subliminally present even earlier, within the title of the novel itself. The word "Death" is integrally and inextricably linked with religious matter. After all, birth and the inevitably of death are the two most important and debatable points in religion. First, Marquez underlines, "Both were exhausted from the barbarous work of death..." (49). Marquez exemplifies the way in which some aspects of religion are ignored and some have great emphasis put on them. When Roman finds out that his new bride is not a virgin, he returns her. She is beaten savagely, and her brothers are called from the brothel to come defend the family's honor. The hypocrisy of family is revealed as they consider honor to be a part of the religion and instead of religiously and peacefully solve the manner, the brothers murder Santiago Nasar. The family believes that upholding the honor is righteous, and in doing so the sin of murdering Nasar is downplayed. Furthermore, when the brothers put down their knives in front of the priest, instead of giving them advice or condemning them, the priest "recalled the surrender as an act of dignity" (49). This is in total conflict with Catholicism as it is amongst the Ten Commandments that "Thou shall not kill" and thus it illustrates that even the priest of the town has lost the knowledge of the true religion. Marquez cements the corruption of religion as even father Amador protected the brothers and not only him but "the lawyer stood by the thesis of homicide in legitimate defense of honor, which was upheld by the court in good faith" (48). Religious Influence On Supreme Court Cases Influence on Decisions of Supreme Court Justices by Their Religions Hao Meng Abstract – Religious influence on judiciary, especially when it comes to Supreme Court Justices, is a complicated issue, and it has been controversial in U.S.. Talking about judgement for the influence, it's not all–inclusive by only dividing them into liberals and conservatives, instead, a comprehensive approach is to focus on specific cases. Substitute statute for decision, and you shift the center of authority, but add no quota of inspired wisdom." –– Benjamin N. Cardozo[1]. In the view of many citizens, Supreme Court Justices are like legal machines, interpreting constitution to promise American people of equal justice. Throughout American history, numerous case laws have established the pattern of judicial decisions of U.S., thus making little room for new legislation. However, even Supreme Court Justices are human beings, who can be influenced by various factors. It's not that simple to determine the inclination of a justice to his or her religious belief, political philosophy and ideology. Hellenistic sculpture often portrayed heightened emotional states, as is exemplified by the Laocoon and His Sons [Fig. 6]. O'Connor is showing the character of not just the Grandmother, however what she perceives to be the common trend in 1950's culture. The concept of family unity and selflessness, even by people who propagate the concept, is forgotten once the individual is vulnerable. Whereas O'Connor will have hints of existential philosophy with reference to the individual, she is ultimately influenced deeply by her Catholic upbringing. This ends up in the Grandmother being a highly religious character, perpetually asking the Misfit if he prays. Religious Influences Religious Influences In the United States people are allowed to think and live freely, there are laws so that the population has the opportunity to believe, follow, or praise whomever they please. But do these laws really abide by everyone's beliefs? It is obvious that the United States is changing its view points from its traditional way of thinking and progressing to a more tolerant stance which is more excepting of everyone; for example, gay marriage was legalized during June 2015. But for issues like abortion, it is still a controversial topic due to opinion and religious stance. Religion can be a great thing for an individual, but should not be able to affect the human rights of anybody else. Across the world people tend to inherit their religious preferences from there family. For example, in the United States about 70.6% of the population says they are a type of Christian (Wormald). Even though the United States allows its people to practice any religion they choose, many laws have been passed due to the favorability of the Christian religion. But lately the ... Conflicts over Religion How did religious conflicts influence colonization? Another chief source of conflict was religion. The Protestant Reformation challenged the authority of the Roman Catholic Church, and Catholics and Protestants struggled for religious, economic, and political power. Alliances changed when new rulers assumed power; for instance, a country that was officially Protestant one day could become Catholic the next. Likewise, countries that were allies one day could ... Jews in Europe were typically tolerated but forced to live in ghettos, isolated from Christian communities. Anyone who dissented from the established religion had a good reason to leave. To members of a persecuted group who wanted to live in a community of like–minded people, the "New World" must have been very tempting. Roanoke: First English Colony in North America The story of Roanoke, the first English colony in North America, shows some of the ways in which political, economic, and religious competition affected colonization. In 1585, Queen Elizabeth I of England agreed to support the Dutch against the Spanish. She gave a charter of land to an English noble, Sir Walter Raleigh, to establish a colony. This colony would supply the English warships that would fight the Spanish. However, the plan failed when colonists discovered the warships could not navigate the Roanoke harbor's shallow waters. The expedition left more than 100 settlers to establish the colony. England left these colonists alone for three years while it fought against Spain. When a supply ship finally

Hospitality is something that can be seen everywhere, regardless of geographical location, religion, etc. This initially sparked my interest because hospitality is something does not require anything special to do. Everywhere a person goes, hospitality can be seen in some way, shape, or form. The Madonna of 115th Street is an amazing example of hospitality throughout history. The excerpt details the days and nights of the Festa. On July 16th, the great bell in the campanile of the church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel announces that the festa had begun. This fetsa unites several Italian communities from those in Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and California. Preparation for this festival can take weeks at a time, houses are cleaned from head to toe in anticipation of housing relatives visiting from other states. For the next few weeks the community gathers together in the streets and celebrates greatly from sunrise to sunset. Music, dancing, fires, festivals, everything is prominent in the streets as the Italian community seeks to express itself. The festa is a time to come together and create a sense of community. Religious foundations, sharing of food, parades, all of this signifies what it is to be a part of the Festa. Hospitality is creating a warm and welcome environment to those around you. Everything about the Festa signifies these qualities. For ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

There comes a time when old family traditions and old religious traditions come to some sort of end or gets to be less of a "big deal". The norms of yesterday's society are fading quickly and are becoming more modern, thus having a more modern society. Religion has been around since the dawn of man and is suddenly starting to fade off into the distance. Religion has changed but is it for better or for worse? Religious participation is declining among Americans even though religion is still very popular. According to the latest Religious Landscape Study by the Pew Research Forum, the percentage of Americans who believe in God, attend religious services and pray daily has declined significantly in the last four years, especially among adolescents. The drop in religious participation is larger among whites, and less among blacks. One group bucking the trend is political conservatives, who show very little decline. ... • 33. Influence Of Paul Tillich On Religious Language Critically assess the views of Paul Tillich on religious language. (35 marks) In this essay I am going to critically assess the views of Paul Tillich's views on religious language. I will first start by critically assessing Paul Tillich's theory of religious language being presented as symbols and his rejections of signs. I will then conclude and provide a short summary before moving on to views for and against his ideas, before stating my own thoughts. Paul Tillich was a German– American theologian who believed that it is possible to speak meaningfully about metaphysical concepts and from this he came up with the theory that religious language, because it is symbolic in nature, has an overwhelming effect upon humans. Tillich argued ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... What Tillich mean's by this is that we don't just see the object as it is but we see beyond the object and the meaning of the object. The second main function is that symbols participate in that to which they point, this is through the seeing of the symbol which ultimately leads a person to seeing the significance of the object. Tillich believed the third main function was that symbols open up levels of reality that otherwise are closed to us. By this he means that it is a way of us explaining things that would be ineffable otherwise, for example, explaining God. The final main function according to Tillich is that symbols open up the levels and dimensions of the soul that correspond to those levels of reality; this means that symbols open up our soul to the real world. Tillich further argued that symbolic language operates in a similar way that a piece of music, art work or poetry might. This is because they can heave a deep overwhelming effect upon us that we can't explain or can only explain in a limited way and therefore, the person listening will not understand the effect unless they have felt the same effect of the same piece of art. Also, symbols, like artwork can open up new levels of reality for us and offer a new outlook on life that we would not previously of had, without looking at the symbol/art. Tillich maintained that religious language is a symbolic way of pointing towards the ultimate reality, the vision of God which he ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Religions use architecture to create many holy sites. In christianity, there are many holy sites in Jerusalem, bethlehem, Yatharth, and Sea of Galilee. In Jerusalem there is the site of Jesus crucifixion, and the church of Holy Sepulchre, where is believed that Jesus tomb is. Many christian pilgrims go to Jerusalem to visit many of its holy sites. • 38. Religion In James Agee's A Death In The Family Whether a person is religious or not, everyone has a different viewpoint on religion. Some people see religion as a helping hand, something that is meant to do good. Others see it as a negative force used for "evil" and to cause harm. A lot of people have no opinion on the matter whatsoever. One of the main themes in James Agee's novel is religion and the causes of it. In A Death in the Family, the characters are very set in stone with their beliefs. While one character turns to their religion for comfort after a tragedy, another uses a person's lack of beliefs as a reason not to perform an act for their family. • 39. Religious Influence In The Aztec's Judicial System The Aztec Empire upheld a very sophisticated, potent, and harsh legal system. The judicial system they had resembles a modern one today: it was made up of multiple courts with differing levels of jurisdiction, such as trial courts, appellate courts, and a supreme court. Moreover, citizens could appeal rulings to a higher court if they did not agree with the ruling they were given from the judge. Although the Aztecs were very religious, they preferred to be swift and empirical when it came to the law, choosing to judge a criminal without their religious beliefs interfering. This, however, did not apply to the sentences and punishments given to the criminals. Some sentences were given without their religion interfering, such as slavery and mutilation. In other cases, punishments, such as human sacrifice, were for a religious purpose. These harsh sentences and punishments helped the Aztec Empire effectively instill fear into the people, which helped maintain control. The court system was comprised of various courts with different levels of jurisdiction. These courts were the trial courts, appellate courts, and a supreme court. • 40. Religion Affects Daily Life How does Religion Affect Daily Lives? " The purpose of religion is to control yourself, not to criticise others."– Dalai Lama. Religion is not something people blindly follow for the hope of reaching heaven. At one point or another in life, every person encounters the moment where they make the decision of being an active religious person, a religious person but don't attend church, or don't believe in a superior power. Whether a person chooses option one, two, or three, each choice brings consequences and a different life with that choice. People live a different kind of life, with different goals to reach, and what kind of life a person may want to live. Religion has a profound effect on people's daily lives, and the areas it affects are work life, family life, and the standards a person holds. Work Life It happens to everyone, people are at work (or school) and have a project due on Monday, but they see the clock ticking closer and closer to 5pm, and have that urge to slip out a few mins early so they can get ahead of schedule on ordering the wings and pizza and getting good movie tickets. The consequence of doing this is the person having to choose whether to finish the project on Saturday, Sunday, or if the person really wants to push it, Monday morning. So what option are you going to take? Work Smarter, Not Harder Full time committed religious people know the regular weekend schedule.
