3. 1) In what ways does your media product use, develop
or challenge forms and conventions of real media
products
For my front
cover my My original plan
inspiration at first was to
was VIBE create an
magazine. I emulation of the
chose this first one, but I feel
magazine that the image
because of still had the same
its lay out power. So I the
and how two original ones
they both I looked at and
have strong used the
portrait originally used
pictures, and made it black
which look and white so I
as though was able to up
they can the contrast and
connect with have a sharper
you image. Doing this
4. Although it has little writing on the front cover, you
1) continued... are able to tell it is still a front cover as:
•it has the style of main
focus as the other Vibe
magazine. With a clear mast
head
•It has issue no., date of
release, cost and a barcode
•The USP from the angle of
its representation is the two
bold pop outs that are the
only colour source on the
front page both influencing
you to what to know what is
on the inside
•There is also a strong quote
issued on the front cover,
which is also found on a lot
of magazines to be used as
a bit of a teaser to what is
inside
5. 1) continued...
For my contents page I thought I would look at the same magazine again
because doing this I thought it would keep my own magazines genre flowing and
not mix up the genres so I become unrealistic.
I did decide to do a similar emulation with
the colours of the Kanye West one as I feel
that the only colours used again create just
that litter more character for the cover. I
also thought that it would work well with
my front cover. The coloured brick wall I
originally taken out because this was when
it was in B&W but then I realized it was
missing something so I added it back in
6. 1) continued... Things that make it like a contents
page:
•The style I have written the word
content I feel is different it was
originally used by vibe. It does
stand out quite well on the gray
background
•I thought that I had actually
written the actual contents and
displayed it quite well, with a
futuristic font and the colour
coding of page numbers to define
when the next page is
•The image is also another strong
one as it takes up most the page
and his body shape makes it so
the writing has to sit in the middle
which it a good place to have it I
feel as it doesn't get mixed up with
anything
7. 1) continued... Like my front cover and contents I did the
research from the same magazines, so I
didn't mix things up to much a stray away
from my original genre.
8. 1) continued...
•I done this one mostly in the style of the USA one before, using a main
image with a huge faded title with a strong overlap of the sub title
•To start the paragraph I used a big ‘W’ I also coloured it as it defines more
where the start of the paragraph is in style
9. 2) How does your media product represent particular
social groups? The imagery used:
•The clothing that the people in my magazine
where represent younger people who are
relaxed easy going, fun, lively people.
•Notice that the way I have portrayed him in
the photos (left) as well he is looking towards
the ground showing he may be thinking about
something and is a bit of a person to keep
things in a bit. And at the same time in this
other photo (below) he looks more serious
and is ready to do what he need showing he
is an out going loud person who isn’t afraid to
Burton
speak their mind.
Top Man
Hollister
10. 2) continued... Fonts:
I used a lot of different styles of
fonts in my magazine to mix
things up within the genre also it
keeps it interesting and not the
same boring thing, that I feel the
social group reading the
magazine would appreciate it as
I think they would like to see
different things in the way they
11. 2) continued... The writing:
The writing is mainly quoted
from Dan of him telling his story.
But the introduction and some
smaller sentences on the page
are just telling the story through
a narrative state.
12. 3) What kind of media institutions might distribute your
media product and why?
THIS CAN BE FOUND WITH MY MUSIC MEDIA PACK ON MY
BLOG THROUGH THE LINK BELOW:
www.cameron-marshall.blogspot.co.uk
A brief couple of distribution techniques include:
•Apps
•Sponsorship
•Hand outs
•Advertisement
IPC media and Bauer media both have reasons as to why I would
use them as my institution for example IPC media already have
some magazines in the same genre and would have a good
understanding on how it would be best distributed a negative would
be that my magazine would be competing with other magazines they
distribute e.g. NME and uncut. Now Bauer media deal with different
types of genre magazines such as Q, MoJo and Kerrang this is a
negative as they would not be as adapt to distributing this genre as
IPC but also it is a positive as my magazine would not be competing
with any of their other magazines and would be the only magazine in
13. 4) Who would be the audience for your media product?
As mentioned in my Music media
pack my typical reader would be
people in their mid teens to people
in their late 20s, early 30s
•Suitable for both genders mostly men though
•Students at collage or university
•Interests: the music currently in the charts, the songs artist, upcoming
events e.g. gigs/festivals and about the life’s of other famous artists
•Enjoyments of reader: Comedy film, R&B, Party Anthems, Rap and
some pop and indie interests
•My magazine would be open to all ethnic groups and religions, causing
no discrimination or prejudice against anyone.
14. 5) How did you attract/address the audience
I addressed the audience through a number of different ways such as:
•Photography- I made sure the photo was right for the selected part of the
magazine e.g. The front cover had Dan looking straight at the camera so it attract
the viewer by it looking as so he is staring at you and on the double page spread
Dan is walking along looking at the ground this is effective for that part of the
magazine because he is telling his story of how he beat his prejudice and it makes
him seem sorry for him self and the front one makes him seem more anger full.
•Colour schemes- I used a lot of B&W I did this so I was able to up the contrast
and make the images look more striking with out making them look not normal,
also a another good thing that came from that was I was able to introduce small
parts that were colourful and stand off of the page opposed to being in B&W as
well and fading in to the background. This technique grabs your attention.
•Lay outs- I made sure the lay out wasn’t to complicated so you would be able to
see it and note all the important information straight away e.g. On the front cover
the ‘Exclusive interview’ part and ‘I am who I am’ quote was the only pieces on the
front also it doesn’t look to over crowded.
•Vocabulary- when writing the vocabulary I used was to complicated so when you
read it, it wasn't to hard to understand and at the same time I made sure that it had
enough detail so you were able to grasp the whole situation. And a lot of the time I
made it short and to the point with the front cover and contents pages.
•Genre- I stuck to the same genre through out the whole making of the magazine
15. 6)What have I learned about technologies from the
process of constructing this project?
The Main technologies I have learned to use the most and become more fluent
using over this project would be photo shopping images to make them more
realistic to/for a magazine, and also photography having to go out and do photo
shoots (camera skills), deciding what angle to use when taking the photo, the
range, the pose I would like the model to be in also when taking each different
one.
On Photoshop I have become a lot more comfortable using it and find myself
needing less help and helping others more. An example of where I feel my
Photoshop skills come in would be on my front cover and the section of my
work with the most editing done to it. I had to crop out the background and
smooth out the edges on the photo and also on his skin I had to remove
blemishes with such tools as plaster and clone tool. Along with actually using
and understanding the new tools it also thought me shortcuts e.g. Undo= ctrl,
alt, Z Redo=ctrl, shift, Z Invert=ctrl I Zoom In/Out =ctrl -/+
When I take photos now, I think about what affect I what the photo to have and
one I know I am able to chose an angel, distance I want the figure to be from
the lenses, what settings I need to use e.g. Exposure rates, colour settings
micro settings, focus settings (what part to focus on fore ground, mid ground
16. 6) continued... Photoshop- 3 phases when I was editing my front
cover:
Original photo Mid phase of Finished
cover cover
Here you are able to see how it went from the original photo of Dan that has
no edits what so ever to the finished front cover with all the edits needed.
17. 7) Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you
feel you have learned in the progression from it to the
full product?
The thing that I feel that I have mostly improved on would be my eye for detail. I
notice this now as to when I first started the project and I done my first emulation
of a sports magazine and I felt how mine looked really different to the original
one even though I though that I had done it near enough to exactly the same.
Now I realise you have to look at every detail for example patterns used in the
corners how and where the page number is represented what effects have been
done to the photos, how the writing had been displayed is it in long blocks or
small chunks how have they used a variety of colours and the list goes on and
on.
As you can see in my blog I am making more references to other work and
producing more drafts using trial and error to come out with the best out come I
could for example I went through about 4 different backgrounds and styles
before I got the one I have now, and I am also using more of my time to do blog
posts and I am also spending time on the posts making sure I have the right
amount and correct information.
I now find that my work looks a lot more professional as I know how to use
Photoshop more effectively, so the actual photo shopping doesn't look to tacky
and cheep and look like it was done by some one who doesn't known what they
are doing. As now it look more clear and smooth, you are able to look at it and
not think about the Photoshop, as when before if you looked at it you would think
