Gender Nonconformity
There is a few information in the reading that I found interesting and valuable to me personally. I
found the information on oppression related to sexual orientation and gender nonconformity relevant
to me personally. I have an uncle who was always known as a 'homosexual;' but today, he is part of a
different type of the LGBT community (transgender). This week's reading helped me understand
sexual diversity and further identify the world in which he exists.
1) The issues surrounding LGBTs is appalling. Homosexuality was once label as a specific mental
illness. Engaging in a relationship with someone of the same gender was considered "deviant" – a
sin, criminal behavior, uncleanliness and mental illness (Nelson & Prilleltensky, 2010). Labeling
others for gender nonconformity is what started discrimination, oppression, and marginalization. As
a community psychologist, recognizing diversity and seek ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Again, for years I grew up thinking homosexually is wrong. Therefore, did my beliefs make me
homophobic? I prefer being in a relationship with someone of the opposite gender. When I went
shopping with a friend whose sisters with a homosexual, she saw me disgusted at the same sex
couple making out. My friend immediate pointed out that I was homophobic. But in actually, I am
disgusted by the public display of affection, but not the same–sex, which I clearly pointed out. I
learned that "'homophobia' focuses on individual–level thoughts, actions, and behaviors of the
homophobic person and does not recognize the societal level oppression that LGB people face"
(Nelson & Prilleltensky, 2010). I understand her frustration. Individuals who are homophobia or
heterosexism view a same–sex public display of affection completely different to their counterparts.
If the scenario involved a man and a woman, it would be seen as completely normal. Unfortunately,
the world fails to lack diversity in the world of desire and love for a

Compare And Contrast Modern Day Marriage In Romeo And Juliet
Love Present and Future Love is the master key that opens the gates of happiness, of hatred, of
jealousy, and most easily of all, the gates of fear" (Brainyquotes.com). In Romeo and Juliet, these
emotions are portrayed throughout this love story. However, these emotions aren't as present in
modern day couples. There are many similarities and differences between Romeo and Juliet to
modern day couples. These may include: the age, physical affection, marriage and divorce. To this
day many couples are far apart by age; although we do not know Romeo's age, we know Juliet is
quite young. "She's not fourteen" (1.2.9). In spite of the fact that we don't have the foggiest idea
about Romeo's age, it is surely the case that men simply choose younger wives. Typically, in modern
days' young girls are not allowed to date older men, but as people grow older they might meet who
is 3 or 4 years apart. "In the 1950s, women married at the age of 20 and men at 23. The median age
at first marriage has been rising rapidly ever since" (buisnessinsider.com). People were expected to
start their lives right after High School. When we are thinking about the 1950s, there were lower
divorce rates, and higher number of marriage and birth rates, etc.. This was because the men could
find a decent job with higher salary and job security even though they did not have college degrees.
Women quit their jobs and put all their efforts and time in their nuclear family. This leads to a high
degree of dependence on the husband because women did not have jobs at that time. All these leads
to low divorce rate, long term family life, and the best situation for children to grow up. In today's
marriage, both spouses have to work in order to financially support their family. The motives of
marriage have changed since most parents do expect their children to go to college right after high
school rather than marry. In Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, characters tend to act before
they think. More thought put into the connections between couples of today. People enchanted by
each other in the modern society, tend to think of Romeo and Juliet as the portrait of love. Romantic
relationships during the time of the star–crossed lovers are very

Speech On Public Washrooms
e a lot of people of who don't see it that way. They think that if something is dirty in public, why
would they have to clean it? Why didn't the last person consume some of his energy and clean the
mess? And that is exactly why humanity is disappearing from all of us. Everyone is for themselves.
Going back to the famous quote from Emily Post, she specifically said that if you don't have
manners, you won't be aware of others. Hence that is exactly what's happening in our world at this
moment.
Public washrooms are a vital thing to have in our everyday life. Where else would people who are
far away from home do their "business"? They're crucial to have I get it. What I don't get is the
people who use them. It's like public washrooms are where people go and forget about humanity. In
what world is it fine to blast a fart while being a few feet away from another human being?
Imagining it happening somewhere else: in a taxi, class, or in a crowded bus. You'd be an outcast
and a human being with no manners. Yet for some questionable reason, it's completely fine in public
washrooms. Hence why humanity is decaying in our world. In addition to people forgetting about
humanity and shooting farts everywhere, what really burns my biscuits, is when people use the
toilets or urinals and walk away without flushing after themselves. It's disgusting. People are gonna
use it after you and they don't deserve to see your pee or clean after you. For some reason, people
become extra–lazy in public.

Affection Reflection : Kory Floyd
Affection Reflection: Kory Floyd
"Why are we so lonely?" Initially, it seems as if this question has no real significance; being asked
too many times by people. However, it does bring to light a real dilemma going on in society today.
Thanks to modern influences, such as technology, our ability to communicate on an interpersonal
level is becoming twisted; how we communicate online human beings are social creatures that
desire intimacy. But, more research is slowly being completed as Kory Floyd, Author of the book
The Loneliness Cure and professor of Health and Family Communication at the University of
Arizona, clarifies the concept of Affection in the Commpendium podcast; highlighting the nuances
within relationships.
To have a better understanding about the Professor, Kory Floyd was born in Seattle and raised a
small town about as hour south of Seattle. Emphasizing its size by describing that his high school
only contained a population of 50 students (YouTube, 01). But his pursuit to study communication
did not occur until later in his life, specifically when he was looking into graduate studies by
reviewing the course descriptions from the communication department in the University of
Washington catalog (YouTube, 01). Incidentally, the story of Kory Floyd's path to Communication
studies reminded me of a past Commpendium guest: Sarah Picklesimer, a communication PhD
student at the University of Connecticut (UCONN). Because both were open to new possibilities as

Analysis Of ' No Pda ! '
Emotions "No PDA!" I will continue to hear through out my day when I went from class to class at
the midst of passing period during high school and middle school. I never knew what teachers meant
by saying that until they would start to get on my case about showing some affection to the
girlfriend I had at that time. That was when I learned that "PDA" abbreviates Public Display of
Affection and one of the first times I learned an American display rule. At the same time, I believe
some manners may contribute to the display rules. Then, the topic of it is "unmanly" for a man to
show their emotions. The other discussion about holding in anger opposed to expressing it. I believe
there are limitations to how men show their emotions, but I do believe that men should be able to
show their emotions. Also, anyone should be able express his or her emotions instead of holding it
and letting it all come out all at once. First, Some of the American display rules are manners. As an
example, when I was younger I was taught it is unacceptable to belch and not say excuse me at the
table with even if the situation is accidental. My mother would poke arm or pinch my arm as
punishment until I would say those majestic words to make my arm stop hurting. I completely
understand why burping at without saying excuse me is unacceptable now. No one wants to hear
anyone else let out gas in any way. It may have a disgusting same that follows it, and is so
unexpected that the belch may offend someone.

My Choice For A Space
Tomkins Park, my choice for a space which encapsulates both the ideas of diversity and how that
urban form and constrains a certain group was challenging to decide upon, both on the side how that
space affects a particular group such as women, and how such a space may change, becoming more
accepting of that group. I chose a space, which was seemingly public and has a great level of
diversity of who uses this public space. I decided to partake in an observational study of Tomkins
Park, located in Calgary's Beltline neighbourhood of 17th Avenue. A relatively small public space,
which straddles several busy roads and businesses. My reasoning for choosing this space was the
amenities Tomkins Park offers, a public restroom, free to make use of ... Show more content on

I observed a homeless women go into the restroom during the early hours of the day, only to have a
patrol officer come and forcibly open the door to the restroom, and then proceed to arrest her. This
space may seem welcoming to anyone who wishes to use it, however because of its location in such
a busy area, routine police patrols, to ensure that the space is still 'safe', meaning that those who do
not fit the description of a white, upper middle class individual will most likely be repositioned to
one of Calgary's already overburdened homeless shelters. Just a couple block from the park is one of
Calgary's most divided neighbourhoods, Mission, which, has a great wealth divide of those who
occupy it. Renters eagerly meek by in order to live there, while, large turn of the century homes
receive renovations to make way for the upper class to further gentrify this area of the city.
However, because of the businesses in this area, it is incredibly welcoming to the vast amounts of
foot traffic, so desired by the city's homeless.
I decided to stay in the park during a busy afternoon and make it appear as if I was reading while
taking notes on my observations. Many people walked through the space and appeared to have a
cordial demeanour to anyone else who may make eye contact

Sexism In Mary Shelley's Frankenstein
In Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1818), the characterization of women is based on the rigid gender
division in eighteenth–century Geneva. Shelley depicts the social status of women in contemporary
London by presenting the female characters as ineffective to the public sphere. Male characters in
Frankenstein are categorized as scientists, politicians and explorers, leaving women confined to the
home as mere companions, wives and often caregivers. By upholding women's views of the familial,
Shelley illustrates the patriarchal social system, which favor men over women. The division
highlights Shelley's portrayal of women's passivity; hence the disposal of the female characters in

The affectionate traits of women were displayed in her care for Elizabeth as she suffering from
scarlet fever. Shelley includes, "during [Elizabeth's] confinement, many arguments had been urged
to persuade [Caroline] to refrain from attending upon [Elizabeth]" (72). However, the efforts were
ignored and Caroline entered the chamber before the danger of infection was past–resulting in fatal
consequences. Devon Hodges speaks to Caroline's figure of feminine textuality when she writes,
"Shelley's characters do not escape traditional female destinies" (4). Indeed, Caroline embraces her
destiny of a mother and caregiver. In Frankenstein, despite the efforts to quarantine Elizabeth,
Shelley displays Caroline's dedication to a caregiver. Before dying, Caroline's desire lay in the union
between Victor and Elizabeth. In turn, her desire for the marriage sheds lights on female's yearning
for the familial. Shelley's characterization of Caroline displays her role as caregiver and her

Rodin The Kiss
The Kiss, as was named by the public, was created by Auguste Rodin. He created this sculpture
between 1888 and 1898. The sculpture is categorized as a 'sculpture–in–the–round', simply due to
the free standing aspect of the artwork. It also allows for the audience to walk around it and view it
from various angles, which also allows it to be named a 'sculpture–in–the–round'. Auguste Rodin
captures the moments that two lovers find their passion and lover for one another and attempt to kiss
for the very first time. It depicts two lovers mid–kiss, also touching intimately. The two lovers are
perched among a rough jagged rock and both of them are completely nude. "The Kiss originally

Animal Persuasive Essay
Imagine you are trying to win an argument or convincing someone or an audience to agree with your
point of view. To do this, you must know about the topic that you are going to persuade. Animals
come in different sizes and shapes, making every animal unique to its own kind. However, the idea
of exploiting animals for anything is a controversial issue here in America and the idea also conflicts
with other countries around the world. Pet owners view their pet not only important to society but
also a part of their family as well. However, some others do not have any affection towards animals
since these animals cannot express their emotions. It is also an ethical and moral issue because some
people are using animals in a wrong way. In this discussion, most of the readers found it emotionally
disturbing and they show their concerns to protect these animals from any harm done. By using
ethos, pathos, and logos animals should not be punished for anything just because of human needs
or wants. To begin, ethos is a persuasive approach which uses authoritative figures that allows
people to agree with anything based on their picture. Using animals for medical practices is widely
accepted for scientists today, because animals can be sacrificed for the human benefit. For example,
in Jeremy Rifkin's article, "A Change of Heart about Animals" scientists from "Purdue University"
conducted an experiment on pigs and concluded when they were are segregated, "They crave

PG-13 Movie Definition
What is the true definition for a rated PG–13 movie? My definition is Romeo and Juliet. The Motion

abuse, or strong sexual affection. Romeo and Juliet hit on 3 points violence, drug abuse, and the love
scenes. Young people see too much violence as it is. Romeo and Juliet adds three more scenes to the
plate. According to Deseret News fifty two percent of kids who watch violent movies can't sleep at
night. A movie that prevents sleep should not be rated PG.The fighting scenes between Romeo and

Difference Between Marketing Theory And Maslow's Hierarchy...
The development of marketing has been increasing very rapidly and suddenly in the past few years.
Each company is going through competitions to prove its position among other companies. If it
stays for a long time without blooming, it may be left out of the competition. A huge failure is
expected in any company if it is missing out the main theoretical concepts for a successful
marketing. In addition, profit mountains could be effortlessly repelled by simply following a losing
theory. On the other hand, when the company understands these concepts, a massive victory could
be achieved. These main concepts are the marketing mix theory and Maslow's hierarchy theory.

This theory is relevant to each sector in marketing as it figures out the needs for any business to
work well. The main points of this theory are physiological needs, needs for love, affection and
belongingness, needs for esteem, and needs for self–actualization. Physiological needs are the basic
needs for a living because no one could live without it, which contains air, water, food and a
moderately steady body temperature. Safety needs come when all physiological needs are present
and are never again controlling contemplations. Grown–ups have little familiarity with their security
needs until a crisis complication in the social structure occurs, while kids regularly show the
indications of uncertainty need of protection. Besides, needs for love, affection, and belongingness
become active when safety needs are no longer a controlling thought. People try to overcome the
loneliness feeling by accepting and giving love, affection, and belongingness. When all these needs
are well pleased, the needs for esteem have emerged. People have a requirement for a stable
abnormal state of the sense of pride and regard from others. At the point when these requirements
are fulfilled, the individual feels self–confident and important as a human on the planet. At the point
when these necessities are disappointed, the individual feels powerless and useless. After the human
being reaches all the above needs, the needs for self–actualization become dominant. It is when the
person to what he was destined to do in life in order to feel

The Importance Of Interviewing Members Of The Lgbt...
Introduction
This research paper has made use of interviewing members of the LGBT community in order to
examine how LGBT couples feel performing public displays of affection in different spaces. This
analysis pulls several reoccurring themes from each of the conducted interviews which feature one
Bi women, one Gay man and One Lesbian women. The analysis will combine these interviews and
theme with previous academic and scholarly research in order to try and provide an accurate look at
the emotions and experiences of LGBT public displays of affection and how or if it has affected the
ways in which they may interact with themselves and others in those spaces.
The main themes summed up in the above table were present through all of the interviews narratives
in some way or another. The first, and perhaps one of the most prominent, themes was that of public
space as a risk when engaging with public displays of affection with a same sex partner. All three of
the interviewees expressed having felt anxiety and nervousness at some point when in a public space
with a same sex partner. Activities such as kissing or holding hands are seen as risky actions that
would result in them immediately being outed as a same sex couple. A study conducted by Kimberly

Alexandria
Alexandria – Renaissance Revisited
Established by the great king and conqueror Alexander the Great, Alexandria has also served as the
city of Queen Cleopatra's rule. Today, however, no sign remains of its glorious past, as Alexandria is
a city that does not rest on its past laurels–it's striding ahead to claim its place in Egypt's new–found

The Ethics Of Living Jim Crow
draft
The Jim Crow Laws, that enforced racist segregation, were abolished 1964. Racism was not. Turn
on the news today and you will most likely see something related to some sort of racist act. Police
brutality with racism is a huge social injustice issue right now and we can see today how people of
color are effected through campaigns such as "Black Lives Matter." After reading the two essays and
doing a little research on Jim Crow, it was extremely evident how those laws deeply affected those
affected by them and I still see this as an issue today. I think that it is crucial to understand that these
laws indirectly still affect people to this day, even after being abolished years and years ago. In
Richard Writes essay, The Ethics of Living Jim Crow: an Autobiographical Sketch, we see him
struggle just doing daily activities in his life. Although the Jim Crow laws are no longer in place, it
does not mean that it does not have an effect on todays world and racism is still very alive and well
today and that is an issue that needs to be solved in todays society. Relevant today, relevant
yesterday, relevant 50 years ago. The Jim Crow Laws essentially legalized racism. Primarily
enforced in the southern states, between 1877–164, the Jim Crow were more than just laws, it was to
a greater extent the norm. African Americas were no more than second class citizens. Some of these
laws went to the extreme of a black man not being able to shake the hand of a white man, because

How Does Emotions Affect Our Social World?
Emotions play a vital role in our social world, including our behavior, intentions, order, and keeps
our social distances regulated. Different cultures develop norms to what equals as appropriate and
inappropriate emotional behavior. What constitutes as a desirable behavior in one culture can be
undesirable in another and vice versa. My family and I visited Beijing, China last year, and I had the
opportunity to talk to some of the residents there. I wanted to see their cultural take on emotions and
how it plays in their daily lives. At first they weren't interested in talking to me about it, but once I
said it was for a school assignment they were up for the discussion. It's a good thing that this topic is
a class assignment for me now. The Chinese view emotions as dangerous and feel that emotions
should be moderated. I remember one girl told me that they are known to somaticize their emotions,
which I found very interesting. Instead of expressing themselves and allowing those emotions out
through their actions and words, they manifest it as physical symptoms related to sickness. Also, if
something sets you back, you are expected to suppress your feelings and to lift yourself back up
without any help or support. Characteristics and individuality are not represented by the way he or
she deals with emotions, but rather by ones social status in society. Saying Chinese people have no
emotions is a common mistake made amongst many, even though they themselves say they don't.

My Perception of Homosexuality
Opening my Mind In general, I think of myself as a very open–minded person and I do not really
experience difficulty discussing a wide variety of topics with different people. I am generally able to
separate my personal feelings about an issue from other people's personal feelings about issues, so
that I do not feel threatened when my opinion differs from theirs. I accept that human beings are
different and that it is inevitable that I am going to have different beliefs than some people, and that
those different beliefs do not make me better or worse than other people, but simply make me
different from them. Therefore, I do consider myself a pretty open–minded person. However, I must
acknowledge that I have some difficulties with accepting some aspects of homosexual sexual
orientation. In fact, there are times that I find myself avoiding conversations with homosexual
people because I am concerned that I would say something to inadvertently offend them, because I
personally find the idea of homosexual intercourse to be very distasteful. I would say that my source
of uneasiness about homosexuality comes from my own experience; I have a visceral negative
reaction to seeing physical affection between homosexual people. Moreover, I recognize that I am
not as open–minded about this as I would like to be. I would like to think that I am sufficiently
open–minded to think that a gay couple holding hands is sweet and affectionate, just as I feel about

Analysis Of Jhumpa Lahiri 's The Namesake The Question Raises
A cultural identity is something that in a way defines who we are to other people. Cultural and
ethnic identity is not only our background, it also showcases our parents and relatives background
which connects us through familiarity of customs. In Jhumpa Lahiri's The Namesake the question
raises, does one's cultural identity change? In this formal writing I will discuss Ashima's journey
through life and how she came to accept America and its customs. Ashima Ganguli is the mother of
our protagonist Gogol and one of the more interesting characters in the book. Ashima is a typical
Bengali in a sense of staying loyal to her customs and way of life. She grew up in Calcutta where
she was pursuing a college degree before she was married to Ashoke. Ashima was 19 at the time she
met Ashoke, "the third in as many months," marriage meeting which her mother set up for the slight
chance she would marry. Ashoke was different from the others, the way he dressed and presented
himself was foreign to her. Ashoke's shoes opened a bit of curiosity within Ashima when she saw
them. Ashima stated, "she noticed... a pair of men's shoes that were not like any she'd seen on the
streets, trams and buses of Calcutta... she saw the size... and the initials U.S.A... unable to resist a
sudden and overwhelming urge, stepped into the shoes at her feet." Ashima was unable to resist the
foreign element that Ashoke had around him. Quickly after meeting him, she was married and,

Field Work, Non-Verbal Communication Essay
A few days ago I took a trip to my local mall and took a seat at the food court. My objective was to
observe individuals engaging in non–verbal communication and document what I witnessed. After
only a few minutes I became aware of a couple sitting within public distance, about 15–20ft away
from me. They were having an argument about how the male was being cold and unaffectionate.
While observing them I realized they were using various gestures while arguing. I will inform you
of what type they were and what they were conveying.
During the argument, both individuals demonstrated affect displays. These are facial expressions
motivated by emotion such as a smile or frown. The female had a frown on her face to demonstrate
that she was sad ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The purpose of this was to communicate to the female that he would like her to stop talking so he
could say something.
After the male verbally communicated that he doesn't believe that he is being cold and
unaffectionate, the female used an emblem. Emblems are gestures that have a direct verbal
translation and can stand alone such as the "ok" sign. She twisted her head to the right and then to
the left repeatedly indicated "No, I disagree with you". The male put his hand out in front of him,
palms facing up and tilted his head up, this combination of gestures is usually translated into
"what?" or "why?", in this situation, it means "why?".
Near the end of this argument, a couple of adaptors were utilized. Adaptors are gestures that make
you feel more comfortable in a communication situation such as twirling your hair or tapping your
fingers. While the female mentioned various situations where the male is unaffectionate she puts her
elbows on the table and massages the sides of her head with her hands, I believe she did this to relief
tension she was feeling from the argument in order to feel more comfortable. The male decided that
her reasons for feeling that he is unaffectionate are legitimate. While verbally communicating that
he agrees with her and he will make changes, the female reaches her hand out and holds his, further
seeking comfort now that the argument has been settled.
In conclusion, it is evident that

On the other side, PDA has already become natural and merely accepted for most of the young
adults according to Cheryl Wittier's article posted last April 2011.
Showing affection in public can be determined by different acts of intimacy. It can be anywhere
from a whisper to a shout. It can also range anywhere from a touch of hands to a touch of
somewhere else (Wu, 2001).
PDA is very common, but still an unaccepted act. According to www.eromance.com, there are
different degrees of showing affection which are commonly observed in public. There are acts that
have been observed by the society without being neither offended nor disgusted. On the other hand,
there are also types of PDA which easily annoy people.
Soenarie and Fehr–Snyder (2008) listed the accepted acts of PDA in the society. Talking in the
hallways is accepted as long no one is disturbed. It is okay to shakehands, give a "man hug" by
patting someone on the back and place an arm around one's shoulder or "hook hug". They can also
hold hands and link arms in public. Giving hugs no longer than two seconds is acceptable as
respecting one's point of view.
Affection is not for public exhibition. Charlene Wu, on the other hand, listed some of the unaccepted
acts of PDA in the chapter 5 of her article in public display of affection. Kissing is fine as long as it
is not more than a peck on the lip. Passionate kissing and beyond in public is not acceptable. Sitting

The Selection of Task Reasoning The selection of this task presented several reasons for choosing to
work with confronting sexual orientation and homophobia. I initially was curious about working
with task because of my current residence in relationship the task. In research conducted by
Schrimshaw, Siegal, DowningJr., and Parsons (2013) outlined the correlations of socioeconomic
status and social support as predictors of maintaining concealment of sexual orientation.
Furthermore the impact of internalized homophobia of self and others can significantly impact an

There were many reasons as to why I choose this task. It specifically led me to looking at the

the use of legislation and political party can influence or deter tolerance towards homosexuality. In

Power Of Culture On Public Displays Of Affection
Power of Culture on Public Displays of Affection: An Observation How do you display affection?
Some people detest PDA – public displays of affection – with a furious passion whereas others
embrace their fondness and feelings to their partner in public. What causes this disparity in
sentiments towards displays of romance? Are characterizations of affection defined by bodies of
location, culture, and time? To begin developing theories regarding those topics, a pair of
observations was conducted in a local park investigating couples and their presentations of romance.
By analyzing the parkgoers' reaction to public displays of affection in Deep Cove, a deeper
understanding of how culture influences affection and romance can be hypothesized. ... Show more

The first observation occurred during an unusually warm autumn afternoon. Clear, blue skies
illuminated the park as red, orange, yellow, and brown leaves distinctively marked the ground.
Vibrant activity and noise permeated throughout the park: hikers, kayakers, paddle–boarders, and
dog–walkers, the park was bustling with people. Moreover, many couples were present. Data
collection, therefore, went incredibly smoothly during that day. In fact, many observations were
missed due to the overwhelming amount of activity happening. Within a week's time, the weather
quickly changed. The amount of data collected during the second observation, therefore,
significantly decreased compared to that of the first outing. Temperatures dropped 20°C and the
clear blue sky was replaced with a dull grey fog. Along with the early wave of winter weather,
flurries of snow gently immersed the sky before melting on contact with the ground. Unsurprisingly,
the park was empty and almost no data regarding affection and romance was collected. As a result,
most of my analysis and reflection will describe events observed during the first observation.
Before analyzing the circumstances at play during the observations, it is necessary to describe how I
characterized the sexuality and sexual identity of the observed couples. The sexuality of those
engaging in public displays of affection was based off traits that constitute the sexual identity of the
lovers. To

Persuasive Essay Magazine advertisement sends unhealthy signals In todays society the media

Magazines everywhere promote the latest style and the way you should look to be what is

It's a new year at Roosevelt High School which means new teachers, new classmates and of course,
new couples who have decided to use the Roosevelt halls as their personal Motel 6. The torrents of
young love (and teenage hormones) sweep people into an impenetrable bubble and while it is

Essay about Demetrius in Shakespeare’s A Midsummer...
The Importance of Demetrius in Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream
The character, Demetrius, in Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, is very difficult to identify
except by his relation to the one he loves, or, more particularly, to the one who loves him. Helena's
ridiculous chasing after him and his irritation with her are the primary marks of his character. While
in this state, he even begins to threaten Helena with bodily harm, coming off as not quite the
gracious courtly lover he truly means to be. It's simple to discover his unchivalrous character by
how easily his eye was distracted from Helena by Hermia in the beginning. He could be a gentle,

Initially in love with Hermia, he uses rudeness to ward off Helena's "spaniel" affection, being very
ruthless towards the feelings of Helena: "I'll run from thee and hide me in the brakes And leave thee
to the mercy of wild beasts" (Demetrius, 2.1.234–235). He cares nothing even for her life and just
absolutely crushes her dear emotions. It always seems that he is usually taking advantage of the
situations he is in, like when he tries to pursue Hermia due to Lysander's absence, but uses harsh
words. "I had rather give his [Lysander] carcass to my hounds . . . And if I could, what should I get
therefor (Demetrius, 3.2.66,80)? A privilege never to see me more. And from thy hated presence part

A Valediction : Forbidding Mourning
What is love?
( An analysis of the messages from A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning )
What is the definition of love? Importantly, what comprises love? One can speculate on what it
means to be in love; though, often it takes the actual experience to know. While, there are many
theories on what true love is, and how one knows their love is pristine. No one elaborates better on
what true love is than John Donne. A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning by John Donne expresses
what true love consists of and how one can differentiate between lust and love. This powerful
metaphysical poem about love compels even the unbelievers of love to ponder about love in their
own minds. Metaphysical poetry is poetry characterized by intellectual displays ... Show more

For if a relationship ends due to separation, that love is not true, even with all the complexities of
adult love and marriage.
Another message intended to be drawn from A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning is true love is love
of the mind, not love of the body. True love is when two minds come together. As expressed by
John, "Dull sublunary lovers love Whose soul is sense cannot admit Absence, because it doth
remove Those things which elemented it" (Donne 484 lines 13–16). The prior quote explains that
after all the physical attraction is taken away, by absence or age, what elemented, or initiated the
untrue love will no longer allow this relationship to exist between the two lovers. For after the body
is gone there will be nothing left to love. For example, if one lover is gone on a trip the other will
have nothing left to love; thus, either one of the lovers may fall for another since their relationship is
based upon physical attraction, a lust for each others bodies. If an individual loves only because of
the physical that love will not stand the test of time. To further express this paramounting message
of true love, "True love is very rare and few are capable of it...desiring infinitely more than sexual
fulfilment" (Myerowitz). Re–stating that true love can not be built upon love of the body,

Heteronormativity And Interactions
After observing the behaviors and interactions of various groups comprised of individuals of the

heteronormativity play a role in interactions between people of the same gender and opposite
genders. To further elaborate, it seemed that same–sex groups or pairings often appeared to exhibit
reserved body language and distance in physical proximity when compared to opposite–sex pairings

Upon analyzing the interactions between opposite–sex pairings or groups, it was apparent that the
distance between the individuals involved seemed to be less than one foot, and many of those

between individuals suggests that there were higher levels of intimacy involved in the relationships
of the opposite–sex pairings, and their apparent willingness to display this openly reinforced the
idea that heterosexism promotes public displays of heterosexual relationships and heterosexual
intimacy. Allan Johnson's (2006) assertion that "heterosexuals are free to reveal and live their
intimate relationships openly... without being accused of 'flaunting' their sexuality" (Johnson, 2006,

As diverse characters of the planet, we entirely perceive our surroundings through our very own
paradigm, which is shaped based on identity. When seeing the world through a paradigm one is
effectively viewing and interpreting through a certain filter. For example, if a scientist is observing
an art piece, he may not be able to perceive it through the artist's paradigm and in order to be a critic
of the art, he must understand what the illustrator is trying to portray. Because art can vary from a
detailed painting in such dull colors to a bright coloured rectangle, and to look at it through a
scientific paradigm he will not understand the story behind the art piece. This rectangle could
represent someone's entire life, as would the detailed painting. And for one to view it through an
extremely different paradigm, they may not see past the 'pretty picture' or 'plain rectangle'. Our
religion and where we are raised is a major ingredient to formulating our identity. It is also why one
person may perceive, as 'kissing in public' to being extremely wrong, where as one may not even
notice it. Within the Iranian and Middle–Eastern culture, numerous perceive situations through the
rights and wrongs of the Holy Quran. Research also claims that many of the passages within the
Holy Quran "...are meant for human perception and comprehension..." (Berrada 45). This statement
illustrates that our

Women In A Midsummer Night's Dream
In William Shakespeare's play a Midsummer Night's Dream, the main female characters, Helena and
Hermia, are portrayed as more foolish than the male characters Demetrius and Lysander because of
their irrational responses to love, which in turn displays society's prejudicial double standard
towards women. Helena is portrayed as moronic due to her brash and crazed attitude toward her
love, Demetrius, and to her best friend Hermia. Furthermore, both girls, Helena and Hermia, are
viewed as foolish due to their extreme fighting over Demetrius and Lysander. Shakespeare's creation
of female characters that behave in a crazed anger, shows society's belief of women being illogical
and irrational.
In A Midsummer Night's Dream, Shakespeare specifically designed the character Helena to appear

everything in her power to reunite her heart with Demetrius'. After Demetrius denounces any love he

that do I love you the more. I am your spaniel; and Demetrius, the more you beat me, I will fawn on
you. Use me but your spaniel, spurn me, strike me, neglect me, lose me (2.1.206–209)." Helena's
usage of the words "spaniel" and "strike me" displays her preposterous view on love. Love is not an
abusive relationship, rather one where both partners want the best for one another and it is a
mutually beneficial relationship. Furthermore, Helena's word choice and Demetrius' response
reveals a contradictory standard that teaches women should not beg for love, rather they should wait
for men to fawn upon them . In addition, besides Helena's immature response to Demetrius' lack of
love, she is a character plagued with jealousy. Helena is not

Bianca's Single Story In Othello
Bianca's Single Story In William Shakespeare's Othello, Cassio's mistress Bianca is characterized as

she is treated poorly and not respected by her fellow characters. In Adichie's Ted Talk, she explains
the story of her former roommate who instantly characterized her as poor because of her ethnicity
and African background. Like Adichie being characterized as poor and pitiful because she is from
Africa, Bianca is characterized as a prostitute based off her past with other men and because of the
commonality of prostitutes residing in Venice. In reality, she is only with Cassio because she is in
love with him rather than being paid to be intimate with him. The assumptions made about Bianca

Quotes From 'The Return Of Martin Guerre'
Marriage and Meaning
Haley Wagner In 16th century France marriage is not seen as a bond between two people that love
each other. It is instead seen as a man and wife being arranged together as one to assume duties of
gender roles such as the woman having children and taking care of the house, fields, children, and
husband. The man assumes the role of working and passing on family traditions such as working the
land and tending to livestock. Martin Guerre and Bertrande go through the exact same custom
except Bertrande is not an everyday 16th century woman. She is independent and does not want to

by continuing to care for Arnaud. Bertrande knows what is at stake and she looks past that to care
for her lover. Arnaud returns the favor to Bertrande when he is in court being questioned about
Bertrande's involvement. Davis explains his display of love by stating, "Before the court he
addresses her "gently"; he puts his life in her hands by saying that if she swears that he is not her
husband he will submit "to a thousand cruel deaths" (Davis, 46). Arnaud is saying to kill him a
thousand times if his love will not acknowledge him to be her husband. He is stating that he would
rather die than to know she does not accept him as her other half. This display of love really shows
how truly passionate Arnaud and Bertrande were towards each other and shows that despite conflict

Religion's Role In Puritan Society
Puritan society was very different to our way of life today. They wanted to live the purest life
possible. Their beliefs and values had a major impact on how they lived and governed their people.
They took criminal matters very seriously, and their punishments were brutal enough to make one

public displays of affection, were considered crimes in the Puritan Society. Punishments for these
actions ranged from public humiliation, to death by hanging.
Crime could be found in every aspect of Puritan life. Religion played a major part in Puritan society.

Graffiti War
What do the "graffiti wars" say about social relations of inequality and power in cities?
Unequal power relations seemingly drive the war against graffiti. Arguably, this war targets
marginalized individuals in poor communities, more specifically; it targets poor Black and Latino
youth. Chronopolous (2011) argues that graffiti is seen as a threat to social disorder and suggests
that communities festered with graffiti are "out of control" (Chronopoulous 2011, pg. 77–78). This is
as a result of authorities seeing the act of graffiti writing as a domination of public spaces by Blacks
and Latinos. Not to mention, they also consider graffiti artists as criminals, disturbed, insignificant,

As stated by Taki, an influential graffiti artist when addressing the concern authorities held about his
graffiti writing, "Why they go after the little guy? Why not campaign organizations that put stickers
all over the subways at election time?" (Chronopoulos 2011, pg. 81). Though, graffiti is deemed as
legitimate when it is used to generate profit, which is seen through the recent increased demand for
graffiti with the purpose of beautification and gentrification. Evidently, the growing concern over
graffiti in public spaces is driven by the conflict graffiti creates when obstructing advertisements,
which generate increased consumption and profit. It also demonstrates the lack of tolerance the
dominant class has for the promotion of dominance by the lower class. Moreover, constant "public
proclamations" which urged people to see graffiti writing as a social safety issue, has certainly
influenced the demand for anti–graffiti efforts and the attitudes upper and middle class whites had
towards Blacks and Latinos (Chronopoulos 2011, pg. 87)
There are many associations with graffiti writing, Hip–hop being the first. Though the emergence of
graffiti can be attributed to street gangs; which, they used to mark their territories (Chronopoulos

Revelation is the extent to which you disclose different levels of privacy to each other. The closer
your relationship, the more likely you are to self–disclose personal secrets to your partner. Though
Kim lives a fairly public life as the star of her family's reality television show, ways to increase
revelation in your relationship include the following: revealing less to the public as prominent public
figures – whether it be in an interview with Rolling Stone or on an episode of Keeping up with the
Kardashians, keeping your privacy to a minimum with the public can increase revelation between
your relationship since personal matters will be considered of more value. Anxiety reduction is the
dependence one has on their partner to be there for them during difficult times. Whether it be
watching a scary movie or going through the death of a loved one, having a partner that is
dependable can reduce anxiety significantly. Since you each have a parent that has passed, being
able to depend on each other for support and comfort is an example of anxiety reduction. Intimacy is
the process by which a couple becomes more private and personal with each other. This can either
be categorized by physical, mundane, or emotional intimacy. Ways to improve these levels of
intimacy in your relationship include showing a more public display of affection or by doing
unexpected things for each other such as making Kanye a personal mixtape or by writing Kim a

The Importance Of Non-Verbal Communication In The Chinese...
Non–Verbal is a key part of people's daily communication since 93 percent of all communication is
nonverbal (Neuliep, 2018). When interacting with someone from a different culture than you, the
verbal communication will be an issue but also nonverbal communication will be a huge issue. It
will be a little harder to become fully educating in the verbal language, so one should become
knowledgeable in the nonverbal code so there will be some knowledge in the culture. Emerson's
quote, "When the eyes say one thing, and the tongue another, a practiced man relies on the language
of the first." signifies the importance of nonverbal communication (Ralph Waldo Emerson, n.d.).
When our nonverbal verbal communication and our verbal communication says two different things,
people will believe what our nonverbal communication is saying. ENTER
Kinesics is the first channel of non–verbal communication being discussed. Kinesics is the term for

Isolation In Willow D. Crystal's A Rose For Emily
"After her father's death she went out very little, after her sweetheart went away, people hardly saw

death and isolation. According to Willow D. Crystal, William Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily"
suggests that there is a tension between what is private and what is public. I agree, but I would add
that the character of Miss Emily emphasizes the isolation and death themes that Faulkner attempts to
achieve.
In Crystal's essay, she concludes that there is tension between the private and public relationship
between Miss Emily and the rest of her community. According to Crystal, "William Faulkner
introduces a tension between what is private, or belongs to the individual, and what is public, or the
possession of the group" (791). I agree with Crystal's claim because it strengthens Miss Emily's
relation with isolation and death. "When Miss Emily Grierson died, our whole town went to her

Public Displays Of A Public Display
Problem As displays are often located in areas where meetings take place, informal get–togethers
happen or visiting guests are welcomed, we believe that they would provide a great opportunity to
act as some form of common space not only to share information between physically present
persons but also to exchange information with the display itself. For example, consider a visitor who
wants to show pictures from his recent tour to his friends or he suddenly decides to give a
presentation of his latest work while having a chat in a company 's coffee area. It can be quite
cumbersome for all his friends to gather around the rather small mobile phone screen. Instead, he
would like to utilize any existing public display nearby to temporarily leverage the larger screen for
picture sharing or presentation purposes. However, such pervasive displays are normally used only
as output devices and do not allow user to interact with their operations. Moreover, most public
display do not provide any means of interaction with it nor is there an easy way to add user–content

The History and Patterns of Interracial Marriage and...
Coming from an interracial family, as well as an interracial romantic relationship, I was drawn
toward researching the history and patterns of interracial marriage and families in the United States.
Having the social experiences involved with dating exogamously or having interethnic siblings and
cousins can drastically affect the way one interacts with and sees the world. As early as 1691,
colonial–era United States established anti–miscegenation laws banning blacks and whites from
interracial marriage and sex, stemming from the oppression and supposed racial inferiority of
African–Americans. Colonies such as Virginia and Maryland were the first to introduce laws
prohibiting interracial marriage in 1691 and 1692, respectively (Sweet). ... Show more content on

But most of these figures are considered either one race or another, according to the one–drop rule
established by law in 1924. For example, Barack Obama is consistently referred to as the first black
president, though his mother is white; or Mariah Carey, who is considered 'white' by her appearance,
but whose father is of Afro–Venezuelan descent. However, the history of being defined as 'white' has
been quite inconsistent. The 2000 Census defined 'white people' as "people having origins in any of
the original peoples of Europe, the Middle East, or North Africa," (US Census Bureau 2000). But
under the Naturalization Act of 1790, naturalization was only offered to "any alien, being a free
white person," which led people to try to sue for white status. By the 1920s, courts handling these
cases operated on "common–knowledge," arguing that "scientific evidence" was incoherent for the
courts, and thus dividing enlarging the race gap. All of these events and issues are evidence of
America's lack of racial equality and also the reason behind many troubles of interracial couples
today. The low occurrence and disproportionate failure rates of interracial marriages in the US
indicate the persistence of racial boundaries still embedded in American culture, especially among
black–white relations. In their study of marital dissolution among interracial couples,

Gender Nonconformity

  • 1. Gender Nonconformity There is a few information in the reading that I found interesting and valuable to me personally. I found the information on oppression related to sexual orientation and gender nonconformity relevant to me personally. I have an uncle who was always known as a 'homosexual;' but today, he is part of a different type of the LGBT community (transgender). This week's reading helped me understand sexual diversity and further identify the world in which he exists. 1) The issues surrounding LGBTs is appalling. Homosexuality was once label as a specific mental illness. Engaging in a relationship with someone of the same gender was considered "deviant" – a sin, criminal behavior, uncleanliness and mental illness (Nelson & Prilleltensky, 2010). Labeling others for gender nonconformity is what started discrimination, oppression, and marginalization. As a community psychologist, recognizing diversity and seek ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Again, for years I grew up thinking homosexually is wrong. Therefore, did my beliefs make me homophobic? I prefer being in a relationship with someone of the opposite gender. When I went shopping with a friend whose sisters with a homosexual, she saw me disgusted at the same sex couple making out. My friend immediate pointed out that I was homophobic. But in actually, I am disgusted by the public display of affection, but not the same–sex, which I clearly pointed out. I learned that "'homophobia' focuses on individual–level thoughts, actions, and behaviors of the homophobic person and does not recognize the societal level oppression that LGB people face" (Nelson & Prilleltensky, 2010). I understand her frustration. Individuals who are homophobia or heterosexism view a same–sex public display of affection completely different to their counterparts. If the scenario involved a man and a woman, it would be seen as completely normal. Unfortunately, the world fails to lack diversity in the world of desire and love for a ... • 5. Compare And Contrast Modern Day Marriage In Romeo And Juliet Love Present and Future Love is the master key that opens the gates of happiness, of hatred, of jealousy, and most easily of all, the gates of fear" (Brainyquotes.com). In Romeo and Juliet, these emotions are portrayed throughout this love story. However, these emotions aren't as present in modern day couples. There are many similarities and differences between Romeo and Juliet to modern day couples. These may include: the age, physical affection, marriage and divorce. To this day many couples are far apart by age; although we do not know Romeo's age, we know Juliet is quite young. "She's not fourteen" (1.2.9). In spite of the fact that we don't have the foggiest idea about Romeo's age, it is surely the case that men simply choose younger wives. Typically, in modern days' young girls are not allowed to date older men, but as people grow older they might meet who is 3 or 4 years apart. "In the 1950s, women married at the age of 20 and men at 23. The median age at first marriage has been rising rapidly ever since" (buisnessinsider.com). People were expected to start their lives right after High School. When we are thinking about the 1950s, there were lower divorce rates, and higher number of marriage and birth rates, etc.. This was because the men could find a decent job with higher salary and job security even though they did not have college degrees. Women quit their jobs and put all their efforts and time in their nuclear family. This leads to a high degree of dependence on the husband because women did not have jobs at that time. All these leads to low divorce rate, long term family life, and the best situation for children to grow up. In today's marriage, both spouses have to work in order to financially support their family. The motives of marriage have changed since most parents do expect their children to go to college right after high school rather than marry. In Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, characters tend to act before they think. More thought put into the connections between couples of today. People enchanted by each other in the modern society, tend to think of Romeo and Juliet as the portrait of love. Romantic relationships during the time of the star–crossed lovers are very ... • 9. Speech On Public Washrooms e a lot of people of who don't see it that way. They think that if something is dirty in public, why would they have to clean it? Why didn't the last person consume some of his energy and clean the mess? And that is exactly why humanity is disappearing from all of us. Everyone is for themselves. Going back to the famous quote from Emily Post, she specifically said that if you don't have manners, you won't be aware of others. Hence that is exactly what's happening in our world at this moment. Public washrooms are a vital thing to have in our everyday life. Where else would people who are far away from home do their "business"? They're crucial to have I get it. What I don't get is the people who use them. It's like public washrooms are where people go and forget about humanity. In what world is it fine to blast a fart while being a few feet away from another human being? Imagining it happening somewhere else: in a taxi, class, or in a crowded bus. You'd be an outcast and a human being with no manners. Yet for some questionable reason, it's completely fine in public washrooms. Hence why humanity is decaying in our world. In addition to people forgetting about humanity and shooting farts everywhere, what really burns my biscuits, is when people use the toilets or urinals and walk away without flushing after themselves. It's disgusting. People are gonna use it after you and they don't deserve to see your pee or clean after you. For some reason, people become extra–lazy in public. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Affection Reflection : Kory Floyd Affection Reflection: Kory Floyd "Why are we so lonely?" Initially, it seems as if this question has no real significance; being asked too many times by people. However, it does bring to light a real dilemma going on in society today. Thanks to modern influences, such as technology, our ability to communicate on an interpersonal level is becoming twisted; how we communicate online human beings are social creatures that desire intimacy. But, more research is slowly being completed as Kory Floyd, Author of the book The Loneliness Cure and professor of Health and Family Communication at the University of Arizona, clarifies the concept of Affection in the Commpendium podcast; highlighting the nuances within relationships. To have a better understanding about the Professor, Kory Floyd was born in Seattle and raised a small town about as hour south of Seattle. Emphasizing its size by describing that his high school only contained a population of 50 students (YouTube, 01). But his pursuit to study communication did not occur until later in his life, specifically when he was looking into graduate studies by reviewing the course descriptions from the communication department in the University of Washington catalog (YouTube, 01). Incidentally, the story of Kory Floyd's path to Communication studies reminded me of a past Commpendium guest: Sarah Picklesimer, a communication PhD student at the University of Connecticut (UCONN). • 17. Analysis Of ' No Pda ! ' Emotions "No PDA!" I will continue to hear through out my day when I went from class to class at the midst of passing period during high school and middle school. I never knew what teachers meant by saying that until they would start to get on my case about showing some affection to the girlfriend I had at that time. That was when I learned that "PDA" abbreviates Public Display of Affection and one of the first times I learned an American display rule. At the same time, I believe some manners may contribute to the display rules. Then, the topic of it is "unmanly" for a man to show their emotions. The other discussion about holding in anger opposed to expressing it. I believe there are limitations to how men show their emotions, but I do believe that men should be able to show their emotions. Also, anyone should be able express his or her emotions instead of holding it and letting it all come out all at once. First, Some of the American display rules are manners. As an example, when I was younger I was taught it is unacceptable to belch and not say excuse me at the table with even if the situation is accidental. My mother would poke arm or pinch my arm as punishment until I would say those majestic words to make my arm stop hurting. I completely understand why burping at without saying excuse me is unacceptable now. No one wants to hear anyone else let out gas in any way. It may have a disgusting same that follows it, and is so unexpected that the belch may offend someone. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. My Choice For A Space Tomkins Park, my choice for a space which encapsulates both the ideas of diversity and how that urban form and constrains a certain group was challenging to decide upon, both on the side how that space affects a particular group such as women, and how such a space may change, becoming more accepting of that group. I chose a space, which was seemingly public and has a great level of diversity of who uses this public space. I decided to partake in an observational study of Tomkins Park, located in Calgary's Beltline neighbourhood of 17th Avenue. A relatively small public space, which straddles several busy roads and businesses. My reasoning for choosing this space was the amenities Tomkins Park offers, a public restroom, free to make use of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I observed a homeless women go into the restroom during the early hours of the day, only to have a patrol officer come and forcibly open the door to the restroom, and then proceed to arrest her. This space may seem welcoming to anyone who wishes to use it, however because of its location in such a busy area, routine police patrols, to ensure that the space is still 'safe', meaning that those who do not fit the description of a white, upper middle class individual will most likely be repositioned to one of Calgary's already overburdened homeless shelters. Just a couple block from the park is one of Calgary's most divided neighbourhoods, Mission, which, has a great wealth divide of those who occupy it. Renters eagerly meek by in order to live there, while, large turn of the century homes receive renovations to make way for the upper class to further gentrify this area of the city. However, because of the businesses in this area, it is incredibly welcoming to the vast amounts of foot traffic, so desired by the city's homeless. I decided to stay in the park during a busy afternoon and make it appear as if I was reading while taking notes on my observations. Many people walked through the space and appeared to have a cordial demeanour to anyone else who may make eye contact ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 25. Sexism In Mary Shelley's Frankenstein In Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1818), the characterization of women is based on the rigid gender division in eighteenth–century Geneva. Shelley depicts the social status of women in contemporary London by presenting the female characters as ineffective to the public sphere. Male characters in Frankenstein are categorized as scientists, politicians and explorers, leaving women confined to the home as mere companions, wives and often caregivers. By upholding women's views of the familial, Shelley illustrates the patriarchal social system, which favor men over women. The division highlights Shelley's portrayal of women's passivity; hence the disposal of the female characters in the novel illustrate the sexist separation of the male and female ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The affectionate traits of women were displayed in her care for Elizabeth as she suffering from scarlet fever. Shelley includes, "during [Elizabeth's] confinement, many arguments had been urged to persuade [Caroline] to refrain from attending upon [Elizabeth]" (72). However, the efforts were ignored and Caroline entered the chamber before the danger of infection was past–resulting in fatal consequences. Devon Hodges speaks to Caroline's figure of feminine textuality when she writes, "Shelley's characters do not escape traditional female destinies" (4). Indeed, Caroline embraces her destiny of a mother and caregiver. In Frankenstein, despite the efforts to quarantine Elizabeth, Shelley displays Caroline's dedication to a caregiver. Before dying, Caroline's desire lay in the union between Victor and Elizabeth. In turn, her desire for the marriage sheds lights on female's yearning for the familial. • 29. Rodin The Kiss The Kiss, as was named by the public, was created by Auguste Rodin. He created this sculpture between 1888 and 1898. The sculpture is categorized as a 'sculpture–in–the–round', simply due to the free standing aspect of the artwork. It also allows for the audience to walk around it and view it from various angles, which also allows it to be named a 'sculpture–in–the–round'. Auguste Rodin captures the moments that two lovers find their passion and lover for one another and attempt to kiss for the very first time. It depicts two lovers mid–kiss, also touching intimately. The two lovers are perched among a rough jagged rock and both of them are completely nude. "The Kiss originally represented Paolo and Francesca, two characters borrowed, once ... • 33. Animal Persuasive Essay Imagine you are trying to win an argument or convincing someone or an audience to agree with your point of view. To do this, you must know about the topic that you are going to persuade. Animals come in different sizes and shapes, making every animal unique to its own kind. However, the idea of exploiting animals for anything is a controversial issue here in America and the idea also conflicts with other countries around the world. Pet owners view their pet not only important to society but also a part of their family as well. However, some others do not have any affection towards animals since these animals cannot express their emotions. It is also an ethical and moral issue because some people are using animals in a wrong way. In this discussion, most of the readers found it emotionally disturbing and they show their concerns to protect these animals from any harm done. By using ethos, pathos, and logos animals should not be punished for anything just because of human needs or wants. To begin, ethos is a persuasive approach which uses authoritative figures that allows people to agree with anything based on their picture. Using animals for medical practices is widely accepted for scientists today, because animals can be sacrificed for the human benefit. For example, in Jeremy Rifkin's article, "A Change of Heart about Animals" scientists from "Purdue University" conducted an experiment on pigs and concluded when they were are segregated, "They crave affection." and it ... Each company is going through competitions to prove its position among other companies. If it stays for a long time without blooming, it may be left out of the competition. A huge failure is expected in any company if it is missing out the main theoretical concepts for a successful marketing. In addition, profit mountains could be effortlessly repelled by simply following a losing theory. On the other hand, when the company understands these concepts, a massive victory could be achieved. These main concepts are the marketing mix theory and Maslow's hierarchy theory. Marketing mix theory includes product, price, place, and promotion. First, a product ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This theory is relevant to each sector in marketing as it figures out the needs for any business to work well. The main points of this theory are physiological needs, needs for love, affection and belongingness, needs for esteem, and needs for self–actualization. Physiological needs are the basic needs for a living because no one could live without it, which contains air, water, food and a moderately steady body temperature. Safety needs come when all physiological needs are present and are never again controlling contemplations. Grown–ups have little familiarity with their security needs until a crisis complication in the social structure occurs, while kids regularly show the indications of uncertainty need of protection. Besides, needs for love, affection, and belongingness become active when safety needs are no longer a controlling thought. People try to overcome the loneliness feeling by accepting and giving love, affection, and belongingness. When all these needs are well pleased, the needs for esteem have emerged. People have a requirement for a stable abnormal state of the sense of pride and regard from others. At the point when these requirements are fulfilled, the individual feels self–confident and important as a human on the planet. At the point when these necessities are disappointed, the individual feels powerless and useless. After the human being reaches all the above needs, the needs for self–actualization become dominant. Introduction This research paper has made use of interviewing members of the LGBT community in order to examine how LGBT couples feel performing public displays of affection in different spaces. This analysis pulls several reoccurring themes from each of the conducted interviews which feature one Bi women, one Gay man and One Lesbian women. The analysis will combine these interviews and theme with previous academic and scholarly research in order to try and provide an accurate look at the emotions and experiences of LGBT public displays of affection and how or if it has affected the ways in which they may interact with themselves and others in those spaces. The main themes summed up in the above table were present through all of the interviews narratives in some way or another. The first, and perhaps one of the most prominent, themes was that of public space as a risk when engaging with public displays of affection with a same sex partner. All three of the interviewees expressed having felt anxiety and nervousness at some point when in a public space with a same sex partner. Activities such as kissing or holding hands are seen as risky actions that would result in them immediately being outed as a same sex couple. Turn on the news today and you will most likely see something related to some sort of racist act. Police brutality with racism is a huge social injustice issue right now and we can see today how people of color are effected through campaigns such as "Black Lives Matter." After reading the two essays and doing a little research on Jim Crow, it was extremely evident how those laws deeply affected those affected by them and I still see this as an issue today. I think that it is crucial to understand that these laws indirectly still affect people to this day, even after being abolished years and years ago. In Richard Writes essay, The Ethics of Living Jim Crow: an Autobiographical Sketch, we see him struggle just doing daily activities in his life. Although the Jim Crow laws are no longer in place, it does not mean that it does not have an effect on todays world and racism is still very alive and well today and that is an issue that needs to be solved in todays society. Different cultures develop norms to what equals as appropriate and inappropriate emotional behavior. What constitutes as a desirable behavior in one culture can be undesirable in another and vice versa. My family and I visited Beijing, China last year, and I had the opportunity to talk to some of the residents there. I wanted to see their cultural take on emotions and how it plays in their daily lives. At first they weren't interested in talking to me about it, but once I said it was for a school assignment they were up for the discussion. It's a good thing that this topic is a class assignment for me now. The Chinese view emotions as dangerous and feel that emotions should be moderated. I remember one girl told me that they are known to somaticize their emotions, which I found very interesting. Instead of expressing themselves and allowing those emotions out through their actions and words, they manifest it as physical symptoms related to sickness. Also, if something sets you back, you are expected to suppress your feelings and to lift yourself back up without any help or support. I am generally able to separate my personal feelings about an issue from other people's personal feelings about issues, so that I do not feel threatened when my opinion differs from theirs. I accept that human beings are different and that it is inevitable that I am going to have different beliefs than some people, and that those different beliefs do not make me better or worse than other people, but simply make me different from them. Therefore, I do consider myself a pretty open–minded person. However, I must acknowledge that I have some difficulties with accepting some aspects of homosexual sexual orientation. In fact, there are times that I find myself avoiding conversations with homosexual people because I am concerned that I would say something to inadvertently offend them, because I personally find the idea of homosexual intercourse to be very distasteful. I would say that my source of uneasiness about homosexuality comes from my own experience; I have a visceral negative reaction to seeing physical affection between homosexual people. Cultural and ethnic identity is not only our background, it also showcases our parents and relatives background which connects us through familiarity of customs. In Jhumpa Lahiri's The Namesake the question raises, does one's cultural identity change? In this formal writing I will discuss Ashima's journey through life and how she came to accept America and its customs. Ashima Ganguli is the mother of our protagonist Gogol and one of the more interesting characters in the book. Ashima is a typical Bengali in a sense of staying loyal to her customs and way of life. She grew up in Calcutta where she was pursuing a college degree before she was married to Ashoke. Ashima was 19 at the time she met Ashoke, "the third in as many months," marriage meeting which her mother set up for the slight chance she would marry. Ashoke was different from the others, the way he dressed and presented himself was foreign to her. Ashoke's shoes opened a bit of curiosity within Ashima when she saw them. Ashima stated, "she noticed... a pair of men's shoes that were not like any she'd seen on the streets, trams and buses of Calcutta... she saw the size... and the initials U.S.A... unable to resist a sudden and overwhelming urge, stepped into the shoes at her feet." My objective was to observe individuals engaging in non–verbal communication and document what I witnessed. After only a few minutes I became aware of a couple sitting within public distance, about 15–20ft away from me. They were having an argument about how the male was being cold and unaffectionate. While observing them I realized they were using various gestures while arguing. I will inform you of what type they were and what they were conveying. During the argument, both individuals demonstrated affect displays. These are facial expressions motivated by emotion such as a smile or frown. The purpose of this was to communicate to the female that he would like her to stop talking so he could say something. After the male verbally communicated that he doesn't believe that he is being cold and unaffectionate, the female used an emblem. Emblems are gestures that have a direct verbal translation and can stand alone such as the "ok" sign. She twisted her head to the right and then to the left repeatedly indicated "No, I disagree with you". The male put his hand out in front of him, palms facing up and tilted his head up, this combination of gestures is usually translated into "what?" or "why?", in this situation, it means "why?". Near the end of this argument, a couple of adaptors were utilized. Adaptors are gestures that make you feel more comfortable in a communication situation such as twirling your hair or tapping your fingers. While the female mentioned various situations where the male is unaffectionate she puts her elbows on the table and massages the sides of her head with her hands, I believe she did this to relief tension she was feeling from the argument in order to feel more comfortable. The male decided that her reasons for feeling that he is unaffectionate are legitimate. While verbally communicating that he agrees with her and he will make changes, the female reaches her hand out and holds his, further seeking comfort now that the argument has been settled. It can also range anywhere from a touch of hands to a touch of somewhere else (Wu, 2001). PDA is very common, but still an unaccepted act. According to www.eromance.com, there are different degrees of showing affection which are commonly observed in public. Some people detest PDA – public displays of affection – with a furious passion whereas others embrace their fondness and feelings to their partner in public. What causes this disparity in sentiments towards displays of romance? Are characterizations of affection defined by bodies of location, culture, and time? Another message intended to be drawn from A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning is true love is love of the mind, not love of the body. True love is when two minds come together. As expressed by John, "Dull sublunary lovers love Whose soul is sense cannot admit Absence, because it doth remove Those things which elemented it" (Donne 484 lines 13–16). The prior quote explains that after all the physical attraction is taken away, by absence or age, what elemented, or initiated the untrue love will no longer allow this relationship to exist between the two lovers. For after the body is gone there will be nothing left to love. For example, if one lover is gone on a trip the other will have nothing left to love; thus, either one of the lovers may fall for another since their relationship is based upon physical attraction, a lust for each others bodies. If an individual loves only because of the physical that love will not stand the test of time. To further express this paramounting message of true love, "True love is very rare and few are capable of it...desiring infinitely more than sexual fulfilment" (Myerowitz). Heteronormativity And Interactions After observing the behaviors and interactions of various groups comprised of individuals of the same gender and opposite genders at Orange Circle, it became apparent how heterosexism and heteronormativity play a role in interactions between people of the same gender and opposite genders. To further elaborate, it seemed that same–sex groups or pairings often appeared to exhibit reserved body language and distance in physical proximity when compared to opposite–sex pairings or groups. Additionally, it was also evident that many of the heterosexual pairings observed seemed to adhere to or enforce standard gender roles during their interactions. Although no overt examples of homoeroticism or homophobia were recorded, it was clear that heterosexism ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Upon analyzing the interactions between opposite–sex pairings or groups, it was apparent that the distance between the individuals involved seemed to be less than one foot, and many of those involved in these interactions walked, stood, or sat angled toward one another. The lack of distance between individuals suggests that there were higher levels of intimacy involved in the relationships of the opposite–sex pairings, and their apparent willingness to display this openly reinforced the idea that heterosexism promotes public displays of heterosexual relationships and heterosexual intimacy. Allan Johnson's (2006) assertion that "heterosexuals are free to reveal and live their intimate relationships openly... without being accused of 'flaunting' their sexuality" (Johnson, 2006, p. 29) is confirmed by the behaviors exhibited by all of the heterosexual pairings observed. These heterosexual pairings seemed considerably less reserved than their same–sex counterparts and appeared to be comfortable exposing visible signs of affection, attraction, and intimacy in a public ... The first sight you see is a couple being publicly affectionate. This is my grandmother's very first encounter on Canadian soil. To any Western this is a social norm, but to an Arab woman it is a cultural shock, which is perceived as uncomfortable at the least. Although she is closed minded, it partially is not her fault, as I have lived with her in Tehran and Dubai –two Muslim cities located in the Persian Gulf and the Middle East. As diverse characters of the planet, we entirely perceive our surroundings through our very own paradigm, which is shaped based on identity. When seeing the world through a paradigm one is effectively viewing and interpreting through a certain filter. For example, if a scientist is observing an art piece, he may not be able to perceive it through the artist's paradigm and in order to be a critic of the art, he must understand what the illustrator is trying to portray. Because art can vary from a detailed painting in such dull colors to a bright coloured rectangle, and to look at it through a scientific paradigm he will not understand the story behind the art piece. This rectangle could represent someone's entire life, as would the detailed painting. And for one to view it through an extremely different paradigm, they may not see past the 'pretty picture' or 'plain rectangle'. Our religion and where we are raised is a major ingredient to formulating our identity. It is also why one person may perceive, as 'kissing in public' to being extremely wrong, where as one may not even notice it. Within the Iranian and Middle–Eastern culture, numerous perceive situations through the rights and wrongs of the Holy Quran. Research also claims that many of the passages within the Holy Quran "...are meant for human perception and comprehension..." (Berrada 45). This statement illustrates that our ... Women In A Midsummer Night's Dream In William Shakespeare's play a Midsummer Night's Dream, the main female characters, Helena and Hermia, are portrayed as more foolish than the male characters Demetrius and Lysander because of their irrational responses to love, which in turn displays society's prejudicial double standard towards women. Helena is portrayed as moronic due to her brash and crazed attitude toward her love, Demetrius, and to her best friend Hermia. Furthermore, both girls, Helena and Hermia, are viewed as foolish due to their extreme fighting over Demetrius and Lysander. Shakespeare's creation of female characters that behave in a crazed anger, shows society's belief of women being illogical and irrational. In A Midsummer Night's Dream, Shakespeare specifically designed the character Helena to appear foolish and to humiliate herself through ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After Helena discovers that Demetrius no longer loves her and now loves Hermia, she wants to do everything in her power to reunite her heart with Demetrius'. After Demetrius denounces any love he used to have for Hermia, she implores him begging for him to reciprocate her love; " And even for that do I love you the more. I am your spaniel; and Demetrius, the more you beat me, I will fawn on you. Use me but your spaniel, spurn me, strike me, neglect me, lose me (2.1.206–209)." Helena's usage of the words "spaniel" and "strike me" displays her preposterous view on love. Love is not an abusive relationship, rather one where both partners want the best for one another and it is a mutually beneficial relationship. Furthermore, Helena's word choice and Demetrius' response reveals a contradictory standard that teaches women should not beg for love, rather they should wait for men to fawn upon them . In addition, besides Helena's immature response to Demetrius' lack of love, she is a character plagued with jealousy. Helena is not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Due to Bianca's single story and the characters assumptions of her, she is treated poorly and not respected by her fellow characters. In Adichie's Ted Talk, she explains the story of her former roommate who instantly characterized her as poor because of her ethnicity and African background. Like Adichie being characterized as poor and pitiful because she is from Africa, Bianca is characterized as a prostitute based off her past with other men and because of the commonality of prostitutes residing in Venice. In reality, she is only with Cassio because she is in love with him rather than being paid to be intimate with him. (4.1.138–140), it shows Cassio's mockery towards the idea of marriage just because of the public's view of Bianca. The phrase "What, a customer?" displays Bianca's single story as a prostitute, even to the person she loves. The phrase shows how in front of others, Cassio refers to her as a whore because that is the public's assumption of her and he feels that marrying a prostitute is ridiculous. • 122. Quotes From 'The Return Of Martin Guerre' Marriage and Meaning Haley Wagner In 16th century France marriage is not seen as a bond between two people that love each other. It is instead seen as a man and wife being arranged together as one to assume duties of gender roles such as the woman having children and taking care of the house, fields, children, and husband. The man assumes the role of working and passing on family traditions such as working the land and tending to livestock. Martin Guerre and Bertrande go through the exact same custom except Bertrande is not an everyday 16th century woman. She is independent and does not want to conform to customs she does not wholeheartedly agree with. So when Martin Guerre leaves, Bertrande sees his departure as an opportunity, especially ... Davis emphasizes that even though Arnaud is on death row that Bertrande risks her reputation by continuing to care for Arnaud. Bertrande knows what is at stake and she looks past that to care for her lover. Arnaud returns the favor to Bertrande when he is in court being questioned about Bertrande's involvement. Davis explains his display of love by stating, "Before the court he addresses her "gently"; he puts his life in her hands by saying that if she swears that he is not her husband he will submit "to a thousand cruel deaths" (Davis, 46). Arnaud is saying to kill him a thousand times if his love will not acknowledge him to be her husband. He is stating that he would rather die than to know she does not accept him as her other half. Arguably, this war targets marginalized individuals in poor communities, more specifically; it targets poor Black and Latino youth. Chronopolous (2011) argues that graffiti is seen as a threat to social disorder and suggests that communities festered with graffiti are "out of control" (Chronopoulous 2011, pg. 77–78). This is as a result of authorities seeing the act of graffiti writing as a domination of public spaces by Blacks and Latinos. Why not campaign organizations that put stickers all over the subways at election time?" (Chronopoulos 2011, pg. 81). Though, graffiti is deemed as legitimate when it is used to generate profit, which is seen through the recent increased demand for graffiti with the purpose of beautification and gentrification. Evidently, the growing concern over graffiti in public spaces is driven by the conflict graffiti creates when obstructing advertisements, which generate increased consumption and profit. It also demonstrates the lack of tolerance the dominant class has for the promotion of dominance by the lower class. Moreover, constant "public proclamations" which urged people to see graffiti writing as a social safety issue, has certainly influenced the demand for anti–graffiti efforts and the attitudes upper and middle class whites had towards Blacks and Latinos (Chronopoulos 2011, pg. 87) There are many associations with graffiti writing, Hip–hop being the first. Though the emergence of graffiti can be attributed to street gangs; which, they used to mark their territories (Chronopoulos 2011, pg. 79), graffiti began to merge with hip–hop culture in the 70s (Chronopoulos 2011, pg. 82). The closer your relationship, the more likely you are to self–disclose personal secrets to your partner. Though Kim lives a fairly public life as the star of her family's reality television show, ways to increase revelation in your relationship include the following: revealing less to the public as prominent public figures – whether it be in an interview with Rolling Stone or on an episode of Keeping up with the Kardashians, keeping your privacy to a minimum with the public can increase revelation between your relationship since personal matters will be considered of more value. Anxiety reduction is the dependence one has on their partner to be there for them during difficult times. Whether it be watching a scary movie or going through the death of a loved one, having a partner that is dependable can reduce anxiety significantly. Since you each have a parent that has passed, being able to depend on each other for support and comfort is an example of anxiety reduction. Intimacy is the process by which a couple becomes more private and personal with each other. This can either be categorized by physical, mundane, or emotional intimacy. Ways to improve these levels of intimacy in your relationship include showing a more public display of affection or by doing unexpected things for each other such as making Kanye a personal mixtape or by writing Kim a song. Among the Puritan culture that lived in Salem, Massachusetts, was Nathaniel Hawthorne. Many of Hawthorne's short stories were affected by his Puritan background. Some examples are, Young Goodman Brown, The Birthmark, and The Minister's Black Veil. These stories all have Puritanism throughout them, for example, not displaying affection in public, not being arrogant, focusing on heaven not the world, and not associating with strange and or devilish things. When interacting with someone from a different culture than you, the verbal communication will be an issue but also nonverbal communication will be a huge issue. It will be a little harder to become fully educating in the verbal language, so one should become knowledgeable in the nonverbal code so there will be some knowledge in the culture. Emerson's quote, "When the eyes say one thing, and the tongue another, a practiced man relies on the language of the first." signifies the importance of nonverbal communication (Ralph Waldo Emerson, n.d.). When our nonverbal verbal communication and our verbal communication says two different things, people will believe what our nonverbal communication is saying. ENTER Kinesics is the first channel of non–verbal communication being discussed. Kinesics is the term for body movements. These body movements include gestures, hand and arm movements, facial expression, and stance. These are used to portray moods, and emotions, or even emphasize what is being said (Neuliep, 2018). ENTER Within the Chinese culture there is a certain way to greet different people, and one should make sure they are executing these postures correctly. Bowing is seen as a sign of respect in the Chinese culture, so when greeting someone of a higher social status or an elder, you do a slight head nod and bow. On the other hand, when you are ... Miss Emily was an interesting character that is commonly associated with death and isolation. According to Willow D. Crystal, William Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily" suggests that there is a tension between what is private and what is public. I agree, but I would add that the character of Miss Emily emphasizes the isolation and death themes that Faulkner attempts to achieve. In Crystal's essay, she concludes that there is tension between the private and public relationship between Miss Emily and the rest of her community. According to Crystal, "William Faulkner introduces a tension between what is private, or belongs to the individual, and what is public, or the possession of the group" (791). I agree with Crystal's claim because it strengthens Miss Emily's relation with isolation and death. • 150. Public Displays Of A Public Display Problem As displays are often located in areas where meetings take place, informal get–togethers happen or visiting guests are welcomed, we believe that they would provide a great opportunity to act as some form of common space not only to share information between physically present persons but also to exchange information with the display itself. For example, consider a visitor who wants to show pictures from his recent tour to his friends or he suddenly decides to give a presentation of his latest work while having a chat in a company 's coffee area. It can be quite cumbersome for all his friends to gather around the rather small mobile phone screen. Instead, he would like to utilize any existing public display nearby to temporarily leverage the larger screen for picture sharing or presentation purposes. However, such pervasive displays are normally used only as output devices and do not allow user to interact with their operations. Moreover, most public display do not provide any means of interaction with it nor is there an easy way to add user–content to be displayed. Instead, they automatically display contents that get it from a central repository or web service and often this cycle have been in a pre–determined way (Geel, 2013). Coming from an interracial family, as well as an interracial romantic relationship, I was drawn toward researching the history and patterns of interracial marriage and families in the United States. Having the social experiences involved with dating exogamously or having interethnic siblings and cousins can drastically affect the way one interacts with and sees the world. As early as 1691, colonial–era United States established anti–miscegenation laws banning blacks and whites from interracial marriage and sex, stemming from the oppression and supposed racial inferiority of African–Americans. Colonies such as Virginia and Maryland were the first to introduce laws prohibiting interracial marriage in 1691 and 1692, respectively (Sweet). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But most of these figures are considered either one race or another, according to the one–drop rule established by law in 1924. For example, Barack Obama is consistently referred to as the first black president, though his mother is white; or Mariah Carey, who is considered 'white' by her appearance, but whose father is of Afro–Venezuelan descent. However, the history of being defined as 'white' has been quite inconsistent. The 2000 Census defined 'white people' as "people having origins in any of the original peoples of Europe, the Middle East, or North Africa," (US Census Bureau 2000). But under the Naturalization Act of 1790, naturalization was only offered to "any alien, being a free white person," which led people to try to sue for white status. By the 1920s, courts handling these cases operated on "common–knowledge," arguing that "scientific evidence" was incoherent for the courts, and thus dividing enlarging the race gap. All of these events and issues are evidence of America's lack of racial equality and also the reason behind many troubles of interracial couples today. The low occurrence and disproportionate failure rates of interracial marriages in the US indicate the persistence of racial boundaries still embedded in American culture, especially among black–white relations. In their study of marital dissolution among interracial couples, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
