2. Summary
Our task involved my group and I creating a promotional package for a film with the genre of our choice. A promotional package is a form
the film industry use to promote a film through a main trailer, main poster and a magazine cover.
As a group we decided on a thriller-horror, due to an interest in the combination and the interesting outcome it may provide. Last year we
went for the straightforward thriller, witch allowed us to use our knowledge and understanding to explore and challenge a hybrid genre. We
explored and developed our understanding and further knowledge through research and manual work on both post and pre production.
We created a main product – our main trailer alongside our ancillary texts witch where present in both our main poster and our magazine
layout.
My group and I got inspiration for our ideas used in our promotional package from different parts of our media, audience feedback, research
and planning and through independent work as well. This helped me create a captivating and appealing promotional package relevant to our
film and target audience.
Overall within this presentation I will analyse my promotional package and show how I either used, developed or challenged forms and
conventions of real media texts. I will be looking into all assets of my media products comparing them to real life examples.
3. HE WHO FOLLOWS TRAILER
Our film trailer uses, develops and challenges real media texts and within this
presentation I will be analysing how it does this as well as showing different
examples and comparing the two.
My trailer is a thriller-horror hybrid and consists of three friends who find
themselves being followed by supernatural faceless being who commits itself
to picking off one by one the young teenagers while they endeavour to
escape there inevitable fate.

4. Magazine - IMPROVEMENTS
When creating the poster in the style of little white
lies, I wanted the antagonist to be the main centre of
the poster, instead of the conventional main
character. The style I wanted to create was clear to
me, and in the first poster this was successful as I
wanted to present the found footage element
alongside keeping the mystery of the antagonist
clear. After both audience and teacher feedback, I
was able to realise my mistake of over complicating
the character and making it too abstract and not
showing clarity. When remaking It this feedback was
helpful and allowed me to create a much clearer
cover that both followed and broke the codes and
convention of a magazine cover.
5. Magazine Cover
Due to the range of creative choices you
can make when creating a little white lies
magazine poster, my group thought it
would be best if I created my own take and
break the conventions of what a regular
thriller-horror poster would look like.
The colour scheme is dark and presents
the horror aspect of our film. The look is
also gritty and gives the viewer a sense
of the antagonist.
I also added the aspect of the found
footage element to the picture, adding
a digital glitch look to the antagonists
face. Also giving an supernatural feel to
the cover
The conventional look of a little white
lies cover uses an individual animated
look, depending on the character
present.
The title font is also different to the font
used in the poster. The separates the
two and allows this to stand out as a
little white lies cover.
Our magazine cover challenges forms and
conventions of a clear and simple magazine
over. Little white lies covers are usually
dominant and contain only one character,
however the main character is usually the
face of the promotion of the film, we on the
other hand used the antagonist to draw in
viewers and allow them to see a more quirky
side to our film, Typical with the in little white
lies look.
6. Main Poster
Our main film poster develops and challenges forms and
conventions of a poster. In terms of form, our poster used and
developed forms with a simple yet recognisable title, a detailed
image, recognisable additional main characters, along with aspects
of the poster that allow the found footage element to be clear. We
incorporated codes and conventions of thriller poster with dark
colours for the layout, the earie image and typography. A slogan is
also present with digital connotations. The background wooded
aria, being present in the trailer, gives aspects of the narrative away
but at the same time not giving too much information away.
7. Main Poster
Analysis
Large clear Title, both fitting with the colour scheme
and separating itself from the other text fonts within the
poster in order for it to stand out. The font itself also
conveys the horror element of out films genre
Showing who's evolved with the film is a good way of
promoting a film. For example if a famous actor was
involved that in itself would help promote the film
compared to an independent film with no body
significantly recognisable.
As well as having the main antagonist being the
clearest most significant figure in the poster, it is
important to also show the audience the other
characters within the film. This is also shown in a
creative way as there is a visually clear aspect of the
found footage element to this, this is important
because information such as this needs to be clear to
the audience.
The main image is the priority of the poster
other than the title. The image has been
developed here, with it displaying and
reflecting the main narrative. This is needed
because of the fact the main image is there
to captivate the audience and give them
some needed information. The dark image
and use of red and black fits with our genre
and conveys the films dark tone.
8. Magazine Comparison
The main character (protagonist) is the priority
and focal point of the magazine cover, the
characters look the magazine used is from later
on in the film due to it best presenting the
character, this follows the conventions of a usual
magazine cover and both breaks them due to
the alternative style. The photo itself gives
nothing away concerning the narrative of the
film. The colours used are to both captivate the
audience and at the same time show little white
lies own creative style, the photo has
connotations of a wanted poster that relates
well to the western background of the film, as
well as the aspect of rebellion. The title may not
be visually clear, however the typography of the
title has relation to the title of the film “Django
unchained”.
9. Magazine Comparison
Like our poster, the antagonist is the main
dominant centre of focus, this being done allows
the rest of the poster to follow the dark tone it
has. The use of the background allows the
character to stand out with recognisable assets
of the character being visible. This challenges
main posters due to the lack of narrative and
other present characters. The colour scheme
works coherently here witch is interesting, from
the colours I recognise the genre instantly. The
character with his head down gives him a
passive sense, however alongside his visual
smile this makes him intriguing and allows you
to engage in some way.
10. Evaluation – what have I learnt
My promotional package as a whole developed and challenged real media text. I have learnt that your promotional package overall has
to be tailored to both your narrative and genre, and essentially relate all of this to your target audience. As a group, we achieved this
through our own promotional package, from our research and planning to form the basis to just using what we know from real media
text e.g. various little white lies and other magazine covers and the diagnosis of the uses of powerful images. From this we tailored our
promotional package to our narrative and film. I have also leaned the power of advertisement and creativeness with the brand little
white lies, and challenged my own creative skills.
