2. POSTER DESIGN ONE:
When creating my first promotional poster, I had to take into consideration how I was going to compose the poster and what kind of elements I needed to add in order to achieve
the outcome that I have. I began by researching into existing thriller film posters and recreated it in my own style drawing inspiration from different aspects.
In terms of our poster, overall it is successful as it features all of the necessary media texts such as the billing block, masthead and tagline. Our brand identity is clearly being
portrayed in this poster as I have ensured that I have used a limited colour palete that includes black, red and white which is what we are planning to focus around. I have added a red
streak to act as a double meaning as the red scarf that this character wears as well as acting also as a blood streak to connotate the thriller aspect of our plot which involves a
homicidal murderer. Looking at the conventions of a poster, I have followed these conventions as the masthead, tagline, billing block and release date is featured in the bottom
third of the poster as well as having the key image the main focal point on the poster and giving credit to both the production companies and the actor shown in the poster to not
only draw in fans of this actor, but to show who the person is on the poster.
3. POSTER DESIGNTWO:
This next design made by another member of the group had created a very different design in comparison to my first initial idea. By creating another poster that is completely
different from our first design, we are able to experiment with a variety of different techniques and compositions in order to create new narratives whilst still connotating back to
the basis of our plot in order to promote our film efficiently.
In terms of this design, inspiration was loosely taken from the poster for the film, before I go to sleep, which shows the key image being split into thirds showing the three main
characters. This design set up is seen over may different posters and is a common technique used on posters to show all characters on the poster which is why we wanted to
experiment with this technique. What I find successful about this design is the perspective and depth that is created by having each of our characters on different layers as well
within a key location which helps to show one of the locations that the film is set. On the contrary, what is less effective within this design is that other components are not in correct
places such as the release date is above the masthead and is rather disconnected from the rest of the poster, breaking the illusion being created in the poster.
4. POSTER DESIGNTHREE:
Finally, this last poster design that I create by hand drawing my ideas and then refining with a black and red fineliner. I created this poster idea completely from imagination which
meant that I needed to gain a lot of primary and secondary research so that I have the correct proportions and how things should look in comparison to the other things shown
within the poster so that it is accurately being shown.
Looking at this poster, I find it very successful as they key image is rather simple in terms of composition, however, depth is still being established through the size as well as the
layers in which the characters are presented. The sizing of the key image is apparent as the larger protagonist character is larger in scale which connotates a leader type character,
which is then reinforced as she quite literally holds the other two characters in her hands creating a marionette type atmosphere; this shows that this character may have control
over these two characters and is trying to help these characters become one person as oppose to two people. Furthermore, the layout of the poster is resourceful as the billing block
and release dates are at the bottom and the skyline includes the actors names to give credit as well as the masthead is bold against the key image.
5. MAGAZINE COVER DESIGNONE:
Within these three magazine cover designs, we all agreed that it would be best not to add all the imagery and information onto the design as we wanted to keep it as simple as
possible so we decided that we would map out where each element would be composed on the page by adding in text of each feature on the magazine.
In terms of this poster, overall it does work as a generic layout for a magazine poster through the way that it contains all of the media conventions that are seen within a typical
magazine cover. However, this design would not work for our film as well as the magazine company, Empire, that will be promoting our film due to the fact that this design is rather
busy and it is not very spread out across the cover. This design would work if we were creating a magazine aimed towards children of the younger demographic as these covers are
usually full of information and images, however, in our cover Empire keeps their covers very simple in terms of composition and usually one have one cover line.
As a whole, this magazine cover is not very successful in terms of the purpose of what we are wanting to include on our cover.
6. MAGAZINE COVER DESIGNTWO:
Within this second magazine cover design, we have further developed upon our first magazine cover by making the cover less busy. We did this by spacing out the text across of the
cover as well as removing the promotional puff and moving the selling line into the left third.
In terms of this design, as a whole it is successful through the way that it included all of the media elements in which make a magazine cover as well as keeping the layout clan and
understandable. Furthermore, each aspect of the magazine has been composed in the correct areas across the magazine, also, the scale works well in relation to each aspect of the
page and works well with each other meaning that each element flows well form one part to another and relates to one another. On the contrary, to improve this design further, we
could add some promotional puffs in order to better advertise and promote the magazine in order to widen the market so that it can persuade more people to purchase the
magazine.
As a whole, this design is effective for the intended use, hut it could be improved upon in order to make it more appealing towards our audience and the magazines audience.
7. MAGAZINE COVER DESIGNTHREE:
In this next magazine cover layout design that I have created, I have slightly altered and further developed upon our first cover design in order to make it more successful and
appealing towards our audience. In this design, I have added a promotional puff as well as a skyline and tagline.
Looking at this next design, I personally believe that this is more successful in comparison to our previous designs through the way that I have placed all of our information such as
the: date, issue number, price, cover lines and promotional puff on the left third of the page so that the right side of the magazine can remain clear so that it leaves more space for
the main image which will be the main source of promotion for our film. By doing this, the viewer can see more of the image in detail and can relate everything within the image to
each other and understand what is happening just by looking at the image. In addition, what I also successful about this piece is that I have added a skyline so that I can place the
main actors within our film so that fans of these actors know who will be in the film and will be persuaded to go and watch the film upon its release. On the contrary, something less
successful about this design is that it may look too heavy on one side, to prevent this we can balance it by adding imagery to the right.
