I am an innovative social sector strategist and educator with
over 20 years of diverse professional nonprofit experience
from San Diego to New York City. I play a crucial role in
fulfilling Candid’s mission of getting people the information
they need to do good by actively listening to community and
partner needs, contributing to the evolution of educational
offerings, and serving as brand ambassador and subject
matter expert, to ensure that Candid’s resources reach the
communities and people who need it the most. Before joining
Candid in 2020, I was a fundraiser, Executive Director,
philanthropy consultant and adjunct professor teaching
fundraising, nonprofit governance, and finance. I currently live
by the beach in South Florida and is am an avid roller skater
with a passion for making the world a better place.

retention rate in 2022 was 42.6%,
making it the lowest rate on record.

1. Share gratitude year-round
• Schedule fun social media posts, emails or
send postcards thanking your supporters.
• Pull a list of lapsed donors that haven’t
contributed over the last year and include
them in your appreciation communications
year-round.
• Build regular check-ins with your donors,
either via phone or in-person, to share
updates about your work. Our Candid
development team aims to do this quarterly.

2. Bring your supporters together
Build stewardship and
celebrate the impact you
make as a community.
• Host an appreciation
event—not a fundraiser.
• If you don’t have a budget for
that it’s ok! This is more about
bringing folks together and
NOT asking them for money.

3. Prioritize year-end appreciation
• Ensure all online donation sites
have well-crafted automatic
thank you emails.
• Call donors within 48 hours of
their gift.
• Prep thank you cards, so you
can easily put them in the mail
when donations come in.
• Create simple thank you videos.

4. Plan retention activities
Don’t let it be an afterthought.
• Host a thank-a-thon in January
and invite board members,
volunteers and staff to be involved.
• In February or March send all
donors a 2023 donation receipt in
preparation for tax season.
• Email your 2023 annual report to
all donors and volunteers.

5. Creative gifting
∙ Branded swag ready to send new or
recurring donors.
∙ Create a relationship with a local
bakery, market or flower shop to be
able to quickly send a special treat.
∙ Host a craft day in the office and make
gifts that you can send donors as
needed.
Tip: it doesn’t need to be expensive to be
meaningful.
