EVALUATION ACTIVITY 1
In what ways does your media
product use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real
media products?
I chose this first shot to display the disconnect between Esme and her friends. You can
see that her friends are chatting to each other, whereas Esme’s priorities are on the
phone and the person she is texting. The medium shot of Esme with her head down
displays her disconnect with not only her friends, but with the surroundings. In this shot
you can hear the background music of birds and cars passing. She is disinterested in
this. This shot sets the scene for what happens continuing the rest of the opening
sequence. I chose the typeface for the credits to appear like a diary of what happens.
As my second shot, I chose Esme just before she is about to leave her friends to go home
and take to the unseen person she is texting. I chose natural lighting to display how it is
an “everyday situation” which juxtaposes the low-key lighting that is used in the
classroom and school corridor later in the opening sequence.
In this shot we still do not see the attacker’s face, but there are clues to assume that he
is there, e.g. the car and the mop and bucket used in the final scene. in this scene, we
see the person get out of the car, and walk away. This builds tension for the final scene.
The audience are immediately suspicious of who this person is.
in this shot, despite Erin and Esme talking to each other without distractions such as
her phone or other people, Esme still fails to keep eye-contact with her friend, which
could symbolise a separation from the other girls. It could signify something she is not
telling her friends, like not giving the full details of her “relationship”. Although we
only see the back of Erin’s head, from her cheeks, we can tell she is smiling and wanting
approval and attention from her friend.
In this shot, the room is still fairly well lit, however there is a brighter light on the bag,
focussing the attention of the audience. Esme is in the doorway, in the shadow, we just
see the silhouette of her and her isolation becomes apparent in this scene. We can also
see that despite the set being unsettling to the audience, Esme remains unaware and on
her phone.
In this shot, Esme is shown to be alone, and vulnerable. She is however unaware of this,
remaining disconnected form the outside world and on her phone. All of the girls are
wearing their school uniform, however, Esme is wearing a larger green coat which covers
this. Therefore Esme is seen as being separate from the other girls or an “outsider”. This
describes her feelings, leading her to turn to talking to an anonymous person online.
This over the shoulder shot presents the audience as watching her, as though the
attacker would. In the background of this shot, we see the door. Although Esme is in the
foreground, the door is better lit and more central, bring the audiences focus towards it.
This shot therefore foreshadows the events of the rest of the opening sequence.
After the phone ringing, it becomes apparent that the noise is coming from the
cupboard . The shot of the door confirms this. This shot focusses on the “Danger
High Voltage” sign tells the audience what is going to happen and the
seriousness of it.
The final shot is of the title. The phone ringing is still in the background and the
typewriter style typeface is still used. I used white writing to contrast the back
background. This signifies the ending of the opening sequence. We used the full-stop on
the end of “anon” not only to show it as an abbreviation of “anonymous” but to also
signify that the opening sequence ended abruptly.
