Oppression Of Women As A Minority
It has always been interesting to me that females are considered a minority. Yet the population
number is higher compared to males. This is the case in America and the world. However, we live in
a patriarchy society where it is normal to have the female serving a subordinate role. The text p.317
describes the oppression of women as a "norm" in our society. The thought that women are
oppressed is somewhat foreign to me because I would have to consider myself as oppressed. This is
hard to do because sexism has become so embedded in our society that the idea of oppression is a
norm.
As an African American woman, I feel the sting of both race and gender oppressions to the point
where it affects my life on a daily basis. Similar to race, gender is socially constructed ideology fit
with its own stereotypes and discriminatory acts. Stereotypes against gender are often attributed to
personality traits like feminine and masculine characteristics. However, feminine traits are usually
treated as the inferior of the two. The text p.318gives examples, "Men do not cry women should
always look beautiful, women are natural caregivers men are tough". These examples highlight a
few of the stereotypes that we overlook in our society.
Sexual Assault and Women
The nonchalant attitude towards sexism goes deeper than everyday microaggressions. Sexual assault
against women has always been a temper provoking topic for me. When a sexual assault victim

incidence of oppression, then I would be naive to the fact that in our society we favor men over
women. My perspective on women in the work force has changed completely. From this I have
gained a new found respect for women who hold high power, and positions of authority because I
know that they must have struggled to get where they are. I also respect them more because I know
that men do not always work well when a women is their supioure, and therefore they can make the
women's job even more difficult. I work hard as a student, so that when I graduate college I can
confidently go into the work force with the understanding that as long as I am a valuable worker, I
will fight for my right to, at least be offered, the same opportunities as my male coworkers;
furthermore I will also fight to make sure that I am always getting the equal treatment as everyone
else in the work place. I refuse to be given unfair treatment because I am a women, our society is
changing and therefore this masculine stigma that has been created around higher positions needs to
be broken if we want to be able to move forward in society.
In the future I would hope that as a society we are able to stop favoring men in the work place just
because of their gender, and I would also hope that as a society we could stop teaching children that
this form of oppression is okay. I believe that for multiple reasons we need to stop placing such a
large emphasis on gender in society, and instead just focus on the

The Oppression Of Women
To be called beautiful is thought to name something essential to women's character and concerns (in
contrast to men ––– whose essence is to be strong, effective, or competent). It does not take
someone in the throes (agony) in advanced feminist awareness to perceive that the way women are
taught to be involved with beauty encourages narcissism, reinforces dependence and immaturity.
Everybody (women and men) knows that." This quote means that society makes it that it is each
woman's responsibility to make sure she keeps up her exterior appearance. Never considering how
brilliant or sweet natured she may be, she will always be judges on how she looks. I agree on what
she saying in the quote, from my own personal experience as a woman I know their are diverse
suggestions of beauty, specifically for women. In the quote I sense that it's immature for someone to

Men are cherished for their abilities, together with alternative mental skills. As a women beauty in
this society is unfair, women examine all aspects of their bodies which leads into narcissism,
reinforces dependence and immaturity. In addition is also causes worry, and anxiety, this ends up
guiding into never being completely satisfied or acceptance of oneself. In my opinion, though some
women pass the test of society's standards of beauty they will never be completely happy because

The Importance Of Oppression On Women
It is one thing to describe the many different aspects of women's oppression in different societies,
but quite another to be able to answer questions like: Why are women oppressed? What is the basis
of women's oppression? And what are the forms of oppression. Since the down of history women
had been oppressed and controlled by the opposite sex. The men practice the complex of superiority
over women, in reality it is an invasion feeling of inferiority. Basically, the men used all kind and all
forms of oppressions on women; socially, physically, and morally. This paper argues the use of
sexuality to practice the oppression and the control of men over women. In the sixties, the feminist
movements put women in charge of their bodies and their sexuality at the first sight. The birth
control pills were a huge argues at the time, yet, it was a first step for women to gain control over
their bodies. In the following years, The Feminist Movement demanded women get equal
opportunities, pays, responsibilities and choices. However, we somehow still find ourselves living in
a world where women are judged and accused about their sexuality. They want them to be an object
of sexual desire, yet they expect them to be pure. Considering Jessica Valenti suggests that this is all
based on the purity myth; the myth where being a virgin is symbolized purity and innocence while
not being a virgin is being in the other side and considered as a whore, impure and unfeminine. She
sees that Virginity

The Oppression Of Women In The Sambia
In the Sambia women are perceived as healthy and men worn down. This is because women are
seen as being gifted with the production of blood, which in this culture is associated with vitality
and longevity for this gender. If these female fluids are present in males it is believed that their
development will be inhibited (Herdt, 1987:76–77). Through this it is made clear that women are
somewhat powerful figures with the potential to impact masculinity substantially. This is further
enforced through the notion that female consumption of semen– the fluid responsible for masculine
development– would be perceived as strong like males and not vulnerable (Herdt, 1987:34). Overall
it seems as though women are at a (biological) advantage to males: they are healthier than males,
have the potential to inhibit male development and benefit from inducing male fluids. This in turn
suggests that women are important in this culture which I found particularly interesting considering
the expanse of oppression faced by women over the years in western societies.
During the 19th century women were confined by labels such as 'the angel of the house' associated
with fragility and weakness. It was therefore socially accepted that women were supressed and
rejected, leading to gender power struggles (Anderson, 2004). Comparing and contrasting western

The Oppression Of Women In Iraq
Some say the world is our oyster. There are so many beautiful places to visit and many adventures to
experience in the short lives that we live. With the vast choices available the one place I would not
live Baghdad, Iraq. Baghdad is the largest a city within Iraq, and it is experiencing many violent
acts. Here, the women are also oppressed. They must govern themselves according o their male
figures. The biggest reason I cannot live here is because it is too far from home for me.
In recent years, there has been significant media coverage on Iraq partly because of the violence that
is happening daily. Anti–Western terrorists groups, such as Osama bin Laden's Al Qaeda and ISIS
have originated in this country. Even though these groups are anti–Western, ... Show more content

As not only a young woman, but also a human being, I do not desire to be subservient to another
person. As a child I have been taught to work hard for things that I desire, but here in Baghdad
women are not even allowed that opportunity. Without the permission of their male counterparts
they cannot act on anything. Living here would disgrace the people that came before me. The people
who have fought so hard here in America so that I may have an opportunity to be successful. My
family members who who have fought hard to get me here today. To live in Baghdad would make
their efforts null and void. I am not willing to give up my free will to think or act as an individual.
Lastly, I could not live in Baghdad simply because it is too far away from home. I come from a close
knit family, in Charleston. Everyday I call home just to stay connected while I'm away, even
knowing that I could drive home at any given time. If I were to move to Iraq, I would be 7,000 miles
away. I would no longer have the accessibility to my family that I am so familiar and comfortable
having. To be so far away would truly leave me miserable because I would essentially be without
them, and phone calls can never compare to physically being with my family.
In conclusion, Baghdad is not a livable city for me. It is a place of extreme violence and unrest. Not
to mention the women there do not have a voice or a choice in their lives. However, the most
important reason I could not live I this city is because it is just too far away from

Oppression Of Women
The actions of Delilah in Judges toward Samson accurately depicts that of a woman who has woven
her way into the heart of a man only to expose and exploit him for personal gain. This is, perhaps, a
founding basis for Milton's view of women as a naturally inevitable source of weakness for men.
But the persona of Delilah created by Milton in Samson Agonistes as she presents an insincere,
haughty, and prideful "apology" to Samson is a reflection of what can be seen as Milton's fear of a
deceptive woman in the life of a man. To put it plainly, women left unchecked by a man have
potential danger that is unparalleled and it must be kept in check. Although Milton clearly illustrates
his view of women as being the lesser of the sexes and as a potential ... Show more content on

Therefore, the women presented in Miltonic Literature are deceptive, prideful, and ultimately a
source of weakness for men. According to Professor Zuckerman, the notion of a "good woman"
found in Proverbs 31 can be directly tied to the Hebrew phrase "eshet chayil". This phrase means "a
woman of valour". The actions of a woman of valour are not the same as the actions of a man
formed in valour as previously discussed in this paper. However, the actions a woman of valour are
clearly detailed in the following verses of Proverbs 31. The scripture states that a good woman will
have the trust of her husband while doing him good, and no harm, for the rest of her life. This entails
that a woman should be concerned, first and foremost, with the successes of her husband. She is to
consistently support him and provide him with the help he needs while never crossing swords or
creating conflict with him. This is an interesting observation because, according to Professor
Zuckerman, if one looks further into the meaning of "eshet chayil", it is found that the phrase comes
in reference to a woman that gives a man

The Oppression Of Women
Historically, men have been considered the only sex and women, the Other, and as a result, men's
views and opinions have created myths of what women in society are expected to conform to and
exhibit. Many of the expectations developed are restrictive and oppressive to women. One such
expectation that men have developed and perpetuated is that a woman exists to fulfill his sexual
needs. Man is the superior being and his "ideal woman" is one that will unquestionably submit to his
domination (Beauvoir 201). In addition, men's domination over women, places women in a state of
dependence. Women are largely reliant on men for economic necessities and security. However,
women's reliance on men, leaves them vulnerable to male's oppression on them. ... Show more

Fantastic expectations are incredibly oppressive, but so is reality. Women are virtually guaranteed to
be oppressed in every facet of reality because of male's overwhelming dominance, but women hold
some responsibility in society's ability to ensure that masculine dominance and feminine subjectivity
continues to persist. Women enable societally oppressive attitudes toward them as they accept their
position as the Other through submission and justification (Beauvoir). Therefore, men are not only
to blame for women's oppression. Women have been subjected to such oppression, domination, and
apparent lack of agency because in society, both men and women have justified its existences. This
has enabled man to continually shape women's perspective, a perspective that they are inferior, they
exist to please, and that they are the Other sex (193). Women reason that there is a purpose behind
their position in society and in many ways, work relentlessly to conform to what man has deemed
appropriate rather than revolting and attempting to combat such oppression. Not all women are
guilty of such subservience, in fact, historically many have attempted to rebel and attempt to
delegitimize male's superiority yet, all have been met with male oppression and halted. Small gains
have been made giving women more fluidity within society, but women are still limited in numerous
ways. However, such gains act to threaten what society has deemed appropriate

The Oppression Of Women In The Piano
The Piano tells me women have no choice and have the right to become involved in sexual affairs
when they are not satisfied with their husband. The woman is portrayed as the victim and the
oppressed as well as brave enough to break away from that oppression in media. I found the way she
breaks away from the oppression of her husband quite interesting.
The photograph entitled "Artist" by Sukran Moral (Moral, Artist, 1994) portrays this gaze in a very
explicit, yet creative/effective way. It shows a half–naked woman posing as Christ hanging on a
Cross. Very controversial, however I think it really speaks in a way that it implies and reminds us of
the position woman is in. It tells me woman is like Jesus, nailed to a cross, naked and everyone is
staring at her and enjoying the pain and torture she must endure. But the conflict here is that the
woman enjoys it or at least has accepted and internalized the "gaze". ... Show more content on

femininity, and pale skin. People are skeptical about this statement and believe that what women

Oppression Of Women And Women Of Color
For my Final project in WS, I have chosen to talk about the oppression of women, and women of
color. To narrow more in on the topic, I have chosen to discuss the oppression of women in the work
force and all the different forms of oppression women face. Oppression is defined as, "A situation in
which people are governed in an unfair and cruel way and prevented from having opportunities and
freedom," (dictionary.cambridge.org). Oppression can be caused by many different things. People
can feel oppressed because they are being compared to the opposite gender. People can be oppressed
being compared to other age groups. And people can feel oppressed when being compared to
different races. Women of color feel oppressed because they are constantly being compared to white
women, and some may say they do not always have the same privileges as others. I have enjoyed
reading and researching about this topic, but at the same time have had a hard time truly
understanding it. To be completely transparent I am a privileged white girl and throughout my whole
life I have never felt that I faced oppression. I have witnessed it, but never experienced it. The
oppression I have witnessed has only been in the work force; which I will discuss later on.
In our first reading in this class we read a book called Sisters in Spirit which was about the
differences between the Haudenosaunee women and White women. When I was first reading this I
kept thinking "how unfair the situation was and that I

Women 's Oppression Of Women
The oppression of women has been brought into light in the recent years but it was the norm in
many societies in early history especially in premodern east Asia. During that time, the roles of men
and women in society were determined by great scholars that had the power to get their voice to be
heard and set general rules in society. In China, scholars like Confucius, Mencius, and Mozi had
great impact on the way people divided the roles between men and women. The overall oppression
of women in premodern east Asia can be seen through quotes from great scholars about how women
should be obedient to men, should not make important decisions in their families, and are not
spoken of equally to men in society.

From that moment on, she no longer belongs to her own family. She then has to obey and serve her
husband's family because that is what the ideal woman was supposed to do. One way that some
people tried to deny the sexist behavior in China is saying that women actually have more power
than men. They supported this idea by saying that women can control their sons or husbands which
directly reflects on controlling Chinese society. This argument is invalid because, although women
did have some sort of control over their sons and husbands, it was not the kind of control that would
affect their career or important decisions. The kind of control that they had was within the family.
For example, if they wanted something to be done within the family and they knew they did not
have the power to do it, they would try to use their husbands or sons as an excuse. However, this did
not have a great effect on the important issues of their husbands and sons. Even if they were going
to use the males as an excuse, the males have the ultimate decision and control of whether they will
listen to the wife or disregard her wishes. Additionally, women were expected to do certain tasks in
the household that would keep them busy throughout the day and keep them from interfering with
the outside, where men were supposed to be. Mozi, who was a great Chinese philosopher,

Women have always been seen as the fragile sex, the one that has to be protected and kept safe. Still,
not everybody thinks like that. There are several places around the world where women are seen as
the weaker sex or even a burden. In order for women to be valued more we have to address the
issues behind the cause, and we need to find a solution immediately. We need to achieve social
progress by fighting all the types of oppression against women and by creating a better future for
them. Oppression towards women is still a problem in today's society because they are victims of

organizations that need to be created have to focus on raising money to create new schools. By

With a basic education they can acquire better paying jobs or even continue into college to obtain a

The Oppression of Women
The Oppression of Women Imperialism is used to gain authority and control over one state or people
in the form of an empire, based on practices of dominance and the idea of superiority. The term can
be found in the history of Japan, the Chinese Empire, Greece, ancient Egypt and the British Empire.
From 1934 to 1945, Hitler ran Germany by promoting anti–Semitism, Pan–Germanism, and anti–
communism to gain the support of the German people. In this time he was the leader of a mass
genocide which killed approximately six million Jews during World War II. During the 19th and
20th century, slavery was prominent in the United States where black women and men were
powered by their masters. Stolen from their original homes, they were forced to work for little or no
pay. In Islam, women are sold into arranged marriages at a very young age. They lose their property
to the men they are married to and are controlled by their husbands. In any civilization, it is easy to
see how imperialism has affected many different religious groups, people of different ethnicities,
and genders. Women have been targeted and discriminated throughout our world's history. Many
women have fought and gone against their society's rules to prove that justice should be given to
them. Women have been discriminated by their sex, jobs, pregnancy, race, and religion. In pre–
agricultural societies, women held equal positions as men. After adapting to sedentary cultures, men

Women 's Oppression Of Women
The oppression of women is best described as a steel cage, crafted over the centuries by the hands of
patriarchal powers, enslaving flightless and chirp less birds. Birds may be benevolent and gentle, yet
they embody a power most ferocious amongst all creatures. Though, it is of no fascination as to why
women, in being similar to birds, transform from powerful peoples to frail figures. The molestation
of power from these birds is done by the hindering cage encompassing them. The thick bars of
oppression slice the wings of the benevolent beings, strip the voice of the once vociferous, and
above all destroy the benign life of the feminine. These feminine figures have the potential to
provide light when light is dark, fly the silky sky, and, of utmost importance, break free from the
shackles that bear them down. Yet, only a few women have been notably brave to do so, and thus
have confronted the powerful patriarchal powers that serve to enslave them and earned the titles of
feminists. Feminism is an evolving philosophy which serves to destroy the intellectual paradigm that
women are subservient to males by nature. Yet, although feminism is essentially a product of the
contemporary world, many figures in history have demonstrated pre–feminist ethics of which has
given birth to the philosophies of modern feminism. Sophocles' Antigone, although fictional,

The letter Abigail Adams wrote to her husband in the March of 1776 had one purpose. She
encouraged her husband to "remember the ladies and be more generous and favorable to them than

Unfortunately, women were scarcely mentioned in the Declaration of Independence, Article of
Confederation, or Constitution. It was not until 1919 when women were given the right to vote, and
there is still a pay gap between the genders. Throughout history, the oppression of women has been a

Feminism And The Oppression Of Women
Feminism is deeply critical of the character of modern societies, where it's arguments can be based
on fundamental inequalities. Like Marxism which locates the roots of inequality in capital
ownership, feminism points to the domination of males in society (patriarchy) being the root of
human inequalities and injustices. We see that inequalities are pervasive aspects of our modern lives
meaning men have economic, political, and cultural power while women do not. It is seen that
women occupy the marginal spaces of private life and domesticity while men generally control
public life. We tend to normalize the oppression of women and that is with the help of cultural
products like television, film and other popular mediums. "The media enables traditional gender
stereotypes because it reflects prevailing social values" (Comm 3263, 2011). Which leads to the
realization that our world is structured by a sexual imbalance in mass media culture.

topics in literature is the treatment of female characters. Often, women are depicted negatively, and
appear oppressed and victimized under the hands of their male counterparts. More so, as
Shakespeare quotes, "Frailty, thy name is a woman ," alludes to the claim that women characters are
inherently weak. Thus, they are taken as vulnerable and easy to manipulate. Moreover, their
decisions and ultimate fate is controlled and greatly influenced by the male characters. One of the

industry/Advertisers sell ideas, images, worth, love and sexuality. They tell us who we are and who
we should be. Sometimes they sell addictions. Such as cigarettes and alcohol beverages. nowadays
in order to sell their product advertisers use women in a sexualized way. However, If one day a
woman just woke and said "hey I love my body, I don't need this foundation, eyeliner and I don't
need that perfume, I love my body the way it is" imagine the number of industries that will go out of
business due to how confident the woman has become. Drawn by the trigger of lies, this couldn't be

The Effects Of The Oppression Of Women
Women are confronted with oppression and inequality in their everyday lives. They are not paid the
equally for the same work as men. Women are forced to be on constant alert for the threat of men
taking advantage of them and their bodies. Online, this is reinforced. Ads often depict women in
scant clothing, shaming them for their weight and ideas. The word feminist even has a negative
connotation from the build–up of misinformation concerning what the label truly means. The
onslaught of images and phrases degrading women sometimes creates a numbing effect, while at the
same time causing irreversible emotional damage. When women voice their opinions regarding their
oppression, representation in popular culture, and their experienced inequality ... Show more content

If one were to strictly compare men and women, as has been done previously, one must realize that
the struggle is far broader. Race must be accounted for, as well as religion and sexual orientation.
They are all interconnected and require to be treated as such. The only way to truly combat
inequality anyone faces online, is to face that same inequality outside of it too. The internet has
become such a part of the world's day–to–day life that it is nearly impossible to evade it. Trolls
believe they are anonymous when they attack, the same can be said about those that stand up and
fight against their oppressors in the name of the oppressed. The men and women who are the targets
of trolls, and continue to send their message, should be example of the true ideal. When faced with
rejection and opposition, no matter if their views are right or wrong, and they stand behind their
view, this is something to be coveted and adored. Do not attack and undermine their views, theirs

Oppression Of Women Essay
The oppression of women through occupationally established sex segregation and the gender wage
difference remains an important economic discussion. The overall gender wage gap has fallen
significantly since 1890 to its current rate of 21.4%. Women are making great strides increasing
their labor market experience and skills. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Report 58.6%
of women make up the labor force, 50.2% have multiple jobs, and 75.4% of single mothers are in
the labor force. Today more women are head of households. Despite all the progress a large gender
pay gap still exist. This is not simply a result of women's choices, but structural, economic and
social barriers that limit women's ability to compete resulting in lower pay. ... Show more content on

Many activists expected that, given women's loyal contributions to the Union women would be
recognized along with African American men as full citizens. Women's rights were governed by
state and not federal laws. So when the northern states abolished slavery, black women gained rights
to marry, have custody of their children and own property. Women in the southern slaveholding
states continued to be denied these basic human rights. Legally black and white women now had the
same legal rights, however race prejudice made it difficult for black and Native women to ensure
these rights in practice. Furthermore, legal status of free women depended on marital status.

It is the center and outcome of the play of power. According to Foucault, power is not oppressive or
possessed by dominant groups, but it dissipates through all relational structures of the society. That
is visible in daily and mundane manners in which power is exerted and contested, as an analysis
centered on the human individual as an active subject, not as a simple object for the power. In his
book Power/Knowledge, Foucault says that power 'reaches into the very grain of individuals,
touches their bodies and inserts itself into their actions and attitudes, their discourses, learning
processes and everyday lives' (Foucault 1978. 39). Power is relative, not a pyramidal construction
like most of the theories opine including Marxism. That is, there are power relations, that are
productive relations because they imply resistance. Power is coextensive with resistance (History of
Sexuality,36). It is possible to develop an "alternative form of life". Foucault's claim is that power is
constitutive of our sense of self, or subjectivity. But in order to be so, power has to be as self–
reflexive as we are about ourselves: thus if we are able to "conduct our conducts" it must also be
possible to engage in what Foucault calls

Oppression Of Women
The oppression of women has been a constant trend throughout American history. While the US has
made advancements to the equality of women, to this day women are not treated equally to men.
(Intro – do last) White women in the upper middle and working class saw a correlation between the
oppression of slaves and the oppression they faced as women, both treated as inferiors in society.
Many women supported the abolitionist movement to express their ideas of equality and the push
for universal suffrage. The abolitionist movement was originally created to ensure the ending of
slavery. Women joined the movement under the impression of fighting for slaves' basic rights and
suffrage would guarantee theirs as well. The First Wave of feminism was born and tempered during
this movement, training women to be able to conceptualize and express their feminist
consciousness. One of the most well–known women that was both an abolitionist and feminist was
Elizabeth C. Stanton. Deeply involved in the reform movement she was a leader of the suffrage
movement and author of the "Declaration of Sentiments" calling upon other women to stand up and
petition for their rights. Many suffragists such as Stanton argued they were human beings first and
females second, implying their lives consisted of more than just their sex roles. They also argued if
given equal access to education and opportunity, women would achieve the same level men could.
These arguments challenged the basic nineteenth–century

Women Facing Oppression In Women
The topic pertaining to if women are still facing oppression and how oppression in women can be
minimized is an ongoing controversial topic that men and women are constantly arguing. To
properly answer this question, it is crucial to understand the definition of oppression and the
different situations that women may be oppressed. The dictionary defines oppression as "prolonged
cruel or unjust treatment control" (citation). After depicting the definition of oppression, it is evident
that women are still facing oppression across the globe. In different countries women are facing
different levels of oppression. Women are consistently fighting to have equal rights within the
different genders. Women are most noticeably oppressed in a patriarchal society and in the
workforce, however, these different levels of oppression can be minimized in a variety of different
ways including diminishing the wage gap and lack of advancement in the work force and
eliminating a patriarchal society.
When the male is at the center of the house and in the male dominated culture, it is called a
patriarchal society. The definition patriarchy is "a system of society or government in which men
hold the power and women are largely excluded from it." (citation). Within the definition of
patriarchy, it is evident that women in a patriarchal society are oppressed. Women are often
degraded and looked down as being physically incompetent and unable to withhold a job. While
patriarchal societies are no

Women Oppression In America
Oppression is defined in Webster's dictionary as "unjust or cruel exercise of authority or power." For
hundreds of years oppression has had a heavy presence in several communities in America such as
women, Mexicans, poor people; all victims of "unjust/cruel exercise of authority". All of these
people continue to fight to this day for the same rights that rich white American men are handed.
Prolonging this fight for equality in hopes of an America that respects equality for all. The women
of early America were known for being one thing. Wives. Wives who existed simply to accompany
their husbands and bear children, forcing them to act almost as slaves to their own spouse with no
independent purpose or opinion in their life. This way of life was inspired by England. "Do not put
such unlimited power into the hands of the husbands. Remember all men would be tyrants if they
could" – Abigail Adams, in a letter she wrote to her husband, John Adams. With the majority of
colonies being made up of men women often had little to no say in their rights and because men had
all the power they were the ones who were able to decide women's rights because women were
restricted from voting. Middle class women were not allowed to go to college and further their
education which led to them working in places with poor conditions and bad pay. Women were also
told not to read too much but to spend more time cooking and cleaning. The men tried to control
women's education so that they could curb

Women Oppression In Literature
We're Not Going To Take It: Women Oppression in Literature
What is oppression? Oppression is defined as "prolonged cruel or unjust treatment" ("Oppression"
par. 1) Women have experienced maltreatment since the Fall of Mankind. The subjection of women
has decreased within the past two centuries, due to their natural rights being acknowledged. Over
the years, people have protested the treatment of women through literature. "Girl," "Married Life,"
"Punishment," and "The Declaration of Sentiments" shares the theme of women's oppression.
Despite having the same themes, the authors use distinct social context and develop their arguments
differently.
Jamaica Kincaid, author of "Girl," displays the unfair treatment of young women in Antiguan
society. In the poem, a girl is receiving a lecture on how to be a woman. She is not encouraged to be
herself or to gain an education. In fact, the mother continuously refers to her as a slut, "the slut I
know you are so bent on becoming" (Kincaid 1146) The role of the Antiguan woman is that of
homemaker. Berleant–Schiller suggests, "the domestic domain of women is sometimes implicitly
regarded as inferior" (Berleant–Schiller 254). Women in Antiguan society are taught extensively
how to prepare meals and set tables. Where and how an Antiguan family eat indicates their social
standing (Berleant–Schiller 259). Kincaid identifies the importance of the meal place through the
use of repetition.

Warrior Women: Oppression and Strength of Female Protagonists in Mrs. Dalloway, The Woman
Warrior, and The Handmaid's Tale In most history books, women get far fewer pages than men. This
is sometimes attributed to a lack of material left behind by women through time, but this and their
relative lack of coverage are both testaments to the limits placed on women in the male dominated
societies of the times discussed. An article on feminist literary criticism quotes Virginia Woolf
saying, "woman 'pervaded poetry from cover to cover' but was 'in fact the slave of any boy whose
parents forced a ring on her finger'" (Lanser 5). In more recent history, strong female voices abound
in literature as well as in social issues, or, as is common, in both. Like Virginia Woolf, other prolific
authors of the nineteenth century wrote of the plights of female protagonists in ... Show more

The novels Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf, the Woman Warrior by Maxine Hong Kingston, and
The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood demonstrate the strength of female characters in the face
of oppression by the customs of patriarchal societies, cultural gender stereotypes, and psychological
factors manipulated against them. As mentioned in the quote above from Virginia Woolf's Jacob's
Room, in controlling societies, marriage can be utilized as a way of submitting women to the rule of
a man or limiting their options in society by confining them to the roles thought acceptable for a
wife. This theme is continued in Mrs. Dalloway, as marriage is displayed as a form of sacrifice in
the name of cultural values and causes suffering for multiple characters. After a visit from her

The oppression of women's rights by men and those in power is nothing new and has been going on
for centuries. Even so in modern times after the introduction of capitalism women continued to
experience persecution. At the time, capitalism brought about countless changes to society and as
the way people made their living changed so did the ways in which women were persecuted. To a
certain extent a considerably amount of this persecution was an extension of the capitalist
exploitation that men experienced at work. Capitalist exploitation began to work its way into family
life. Nevertheless, Across many different societies throughout time, husbands have had a lot of

The economic consequences of this unpaid household work and care are vast and complicated as
they sometimes can occur over a long length of time. Nevertheless, unpaid care and household work
does have many visible effects on a capitalist economy. The effects most commonly cited by
economists ares the effects this unpaid work has on the labor power, and in a more limited sense the
industrial reserve army, in a capitalist economy. The most visible effect unpaid care and household
work has in a capitalist economy is to lower the value of labor power. On the other hand, the
exploitation of women also effects a society's perception of the value of women's work. This is true
of both the work that women do, industries dominated by women, and work that is culturally
associated with women. Moreover, the effect the exploitation of women has on an industry, in
addition to the effect of unpaid household work, extends to not only to the women working in that
industry but to the men as well. The commodification of the unpaid work historically done by
women is a great example of

Women 's Oppression Of Women
Women are the one of most oppressed groups of people among all civilizations and nations of the
world. Throughout history, women have been belittled, abused, and discriminated against. They
have been second–class citizens and seen as objects through almost all civilizations and throughout
most of human history. The ideology behind these views has been challenged, but still women all
around the world have continued to be oppressed and silenced as a result of practices in today's
societies that perpetuate the oppression of women and the continuation of gender–based violence
and discrimination. Ending these practices is key to the end of gender–based discrimination, as the
control and silencing of women cannot happen otherwise. In many developing nations, the
oppression of women is continued due to many cultural traditions that have the effect of limiting a
girl's autonomy and agency, from even before adulthood. I decided to focus on South and
Southeastern Asia, where many women are not given the same rights and agency as men. Many
women throughout South and Southeast Asia suffer from gender–based discrimination and are
barred from achieving equality with men for a number of reasons: extreme poverty throughout the
region, a prevalence of cultural traditions in this region rooted in controlling female sexuality,
practices surrounding marriage customs, and the valuing of male children over female children.
Rampant poverty in areas of South and Southeast Asia serves as the

Oppression Of Women
The oppression of women has been happening since the beginning of time and religion is one huge
factor that often hides in the dark. Christianity is the world's largest religion and its oppression of
women will be brought to light. Christians use their beliefs and stance to oppress women socially,
physically and mentally.
Christianity, is the belief in Christ as the one and only God and his teachings transmitted through the
holy bible. Christians often fall into two categories, Conservatives and Liberals. Conservatives are
more likely to follow their religion more strictly and to be devoted to scripture. They often believe
everything in the bible undoubtedly and for this reason, are more likely to oppress women, using
scripture as an ok for this behavior. Liberals, on the other hand, are more open minded and mainly
focus on the teaching of God's unconditional love for all. Liberals are more likely to be egalitarian
while Conservatives are more likely to have prejudice towards people who have different beliefs or
way of life.
Christianity oppresses women in one huge way which is by emphasizing the belief that women are
created for men and are meant to serve their husband. One verse that demonstrates this is, "He
[Solomon] had seven hundred wives of royal birth and three hundred concubines, and his wives led
him astray. 1 Kings 11:3 (Tarico, 2012)" This verse shows that women were seen as objects and
married against their will so that their husband would have a better

Oppression is perpetuated in our society through supremacy and discrimination. Women of color
have been subjected to the justifications of unfair treatment from their oppressors– both male and

accurately convey the ability she has to bend situations to her will and thrive under circumstances of

Rankine uses one of comradery and empowerment. Throughout his writing, Rodrick makes

The Issue Of The Oppression Of Women
Helen Clark once said, "Any serious shift towards more sustainable societies has to include gender
equality." One would think that after all of the changes that have taken place in the world for the
better, equality would be one of the fixed assets. However, everyday experiences humans have in
areas worldwide portray otherwise. The belief that one gender is more superior to another, especially
men being superior to women, is a huge issue that continues to this day all over the world. The
oppression of women is prolonged cruel or unjust treatment or the control of women. It is very
unfair for women to undergo this mistreatment and unjust that is brought to them, and this problem
has been occurring for several hundreds of years. As this issue

Oppression of Women
Women go through distressing cruelty and oppression mostly because America is a patriarchal
society, a male dominated society in which older men are in positions of power. Many unfortunate
evils run loose and free in this society because either society does little to stop it, or at times, even
encourages this destructive behavior. In the articles "Battering: Who's Going to Stop It" and
"Protecting Male Abusers and Punishing the Women Who Confront Them" we see one of these
unfortunate evils and the damaging effect of it against women. Women are beaten helplessly without
the aid of any of our patriarchal authorities in achieving justice, as if justice falls solely on the
footsteps of men. In the articles "The Politics of Housework" and "The ... Show more content on

Plus, they are also blamed for allowing their man's abusive behavior and failing to protect her child.
Instead of blaming the true person in the wrong, the man, our patriarchal society once again puts the
blame on the woman. Sexism is another unfortunate evil that is firmly fixed into our patriarchal
structure of society. Our society has been organized around the idea that public fields of our society,
such as work and education are a man's territory, and the private matters, such as family, is a
woman's niche. The contradiction between the truth of many women's lives and the social
institutions shaped by this belief in division of roles is a major source of tension in contemporary
society. It is even a major source of tension within the household, as seen in "The Politics of
Housework". The work done in the home, such as housework and nurturing, demands a lot of
attention, attention and skill. Women still do much of this work at home even though their
participation in the work field has increased. This article demonstrates the struggle involved in
getting men to share in the responsibility for chores. Since housework is associated with women, it
is seen as demeaning and lacing in value. The husband provides numerous complaints to doing
housework since it should be a woman's job. One was that he hates it more than her, but she doesn't
mind it so much. A comment which had a very sexist underlying meaning that housework is

The Negative Effect of the Oppression of Women
Women have been oppressed by men since the beginning of time. It is only now that society is doing
something about this and realizing the negative effects this injustice has had. The maltreatment of
women affects females in their day to day lives, since long ago, and still in present day. Characters
from The House of Mirth by Edith Wharton, The Awakening by Kate Chopin, and 'Proem' by
Charlotte Perkins Gilman, will reveal how the oppression of women can affect people's lives in a
negative way.

society because she is a female. Lily needs to get married to become more accepted in the upper

"He would work and struggle for her, he would shelter and defend her,– She should never leave him,
never, till their eyes in death were dim." This shows how just because a man protects a woman, or
provides shelter or care for her, she is indebted to him forever, and expected to love him until the
end of time. "Close, close he bound her, that she should leave him never; Weak still he kept her, lest
she be strong to flee". This shows how man persecutes woman and binds her in his rules and power,
he keeps her weak so that he will remain in power over her. If woman is kept weak by having no
place in society without a man, she will need to stay with him to keep her place. "And woman? He
will hold her,–he will have her when he pleases–". This reveals how women must bend to man's
every will and command. If he has her when he pleases, sometimes she would have to have him
when she does not want to. "Gone the friend and comrade of the day when life was younger, She
who rests and comforts, she who helps and saves." Woman has been mistreated so long that she is
now a shell of her former self, and all she does are her duties that man has put upon her. "The ages
of her sorrow have but taught her to forgive!" She has been tormented for so long that even after all
the horrors Man has put her through, she still forgives him for his actions. Her compassion for him
lasts because she knows that she will have no place without him, so she needs his love and

Medieval Oppression Of Women
Over the medieval period oppression of women has been a problem and has not been solved up to
now. Various movements have taken place against these dilemmas but they still exist in our nation
and while they prevail they've given an upswing to problems and instances of obnoxious behavior.
Women have been unjustly held back from achieving full equality for much of human history. In the
novel 'The Palace of Illusions', Princess Panchali said "He was always trying to discourage me from
attending Dhri's lessons– and he wasn't the only one. At first, no matter how much I begged, King
Drupad had balked at the thought of me studying with my brother. A girl being taught what a boy
was supposed to learn? Such a thing had never been heard of in the royal family of Panchal!" Dhai
Ma denied Panchali of accessing the lessons that Dhri was learning as she believed that they were
making her argumentative and too manlike in her speech.
Practices followed during the medieval period showed us the predominant injustice of our times is
the widespread, tyrannical oppression of women. The feudal society of the time encouraged "Sati"
which meant self–immolation of the widow. By burning herself on the pyre of her husband, she
proves her loyalty. Even the child widows were not spared from this gruesome ... Show more

Oppression Of Women By Marriage
Oppression of Women by Marriage
Maybe it is because Eve was created from a spare rib of Adam? Maybe because men are better
hunters, well most men? From the beginning of time, the role of a woman in a marriage has been
accepted as that of a civil servant to her family. The wife is responsible for taking care of the
welfare, in addition to putting her life; if she ever dreamed of one, down in complete replacement of
what her husband 's goals. In the 19th century especially, when women suffrage was starting to take
shape, the definition of the perfect wife continued to be embedded into our society. The Story of the
Hour by Kate Chopin, through the use of situational and dramatic irony, foreshadowing, and diction,
shines a light on how the institution of marriage continue to not only repress, but put women in a
role similar to that of a civil servant. Across the world, though they differentiate slightly,
responsibilities of men and women seem to resonate soundly. History shows that in Eastern
Cultures, woman was seen as prizes to be respected and treasured, for this reason, marriage women
took their responsibilities duties very seriously. However, they were designated to become only
mothers and later grandmothers to serve and produce heirs for the men of the clan. Though proven
beneficial, in the aspect of allowing for preceding generations to be able to efficiently educate the
newer generations, women were bounded by their homes. In colonial American, marriage was

Oppression Of Women As A Minority

  • 1. Oppression Of Women As A Minority It has always been interesting to me that females are considered a minority. Yet the population number is higher compared to males. This is the case in America and the world. However, we live in a patriarchy society where it is normal to have the female serving a subordinate role. The text p.317 describes the oppression of women as a "norm" in our society. The thought that women are oppressed is somewhat foreign to me because I would have to consider myself as oppressed. This is hard to do because sexism has become so embedded in our society that the idea of oppression is a norm. As an African American woman, I feel the sting of both race and gender oppressions to the point where it affects my life on a daily basis. Similar to race, gender is socially constructed ideology fit with its own stereotypes and discriminatory acts. Stereotypes against gender are often attributed to personality traits like feminine and masculine characteristics. However, feminine traits are usually treated as the inferior of the two. The text p.318gives examples, "Men do not cry women should always look beautiful, women are natural caregivers men are tough". These examples highlight a few of the stereotypes that we overlook in our society. Sexual Assault and Women The nonchalant attitude towards sexism goes deeper than everyday microaggressions. Sexual assault against women has always been a temper provoking topic for me. When a sexual assault victim reports said crime the first comment people ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. The Effect Of Oppression On Women incidence of oppression, then I would be naive to the fact that in our society we favor men over women. My perspective on women in the work force has changed completely. From this I have gained a new found respect for women who hold high power, and positions of authority because I know that they must have struggled to get where they are. I also respect them more because I know that men do not always work well when a women is their supioure, and therefore they can make the women's job even more difficult. I work hard as a student, so that when I graduate college I can confidently go into the work force with the understanding that as long as I am a valuable worker, I will fight for my right to, at least be offered, the same opportunities as my male coworkers; furthermore I will also fight to make sure that I am always getting the equal treatment as everyone else in the work place. I refuse to be given unfair treatment because I am a women, our society is changing and therefore this masculine stigma that has been created around higher positions needs to be broken if we want to be able to move forward in society. In the future I would hope that as a society we are able to stop favoring men in the work place just because of their gender, and I would also hope that as a society we could stop teaching children that this form of oppression is okay. I believe that for multiple reasons we need to stop placing such a large emphasis on gender in society, and instead just focus on the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The Oppression Of Women To be called beautiful is thought to name something essential to women's character and concerns (in contrast to men ––– whose essence is to be strong, effective, or competent). It does not take someone in the throes (agony) in advanced feminist awareness to perceive that the way women are taught to be involved with beauty encourages narcissism, reinforces dependence and immaturity. Everybody (women and men) knows that." This quote means that society makes it that it is each woman's responsibility to make sure she keeps up her exterior appearance. Never considering how brilliant or sweet natured she may be, she will always be judges on how she looks. I agree on what she saying in the quote, from my own personal experience as a woman I know their are diverse suggestions of beauty, specifically for women. In the quote I sense that it's immature for someone to value a women based on only their looks, than what they can possess, like their abilities. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Men are cherished for their abilities, together with alternative mental skills. As a women beauty in this society is unfair, women examine all aspects of their bodies which leads into narcissism, reinforces dependence and immaturity. In addition is also causes worry, and anxiety, this ends up guiding into never being completely satisfied or acceptance of oneself. In my opinion, though some women pass the test of society's standards of beauty they will never be completely happy because standard of beauty change all the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. The Importance Of Oppression On Women It is one thing to describe the many different aspects of women's oppression in different societies, but quite another to be able to answer questions like: Why are women oppressed? What is the basis of women's oppression? And what are the forms of oppression. Since the down of history women had been oppressed and controlled by the opposite sex. The men practice the complex of superiority over women, in reality it is an invasion feeling of inferiority. Basically, the men used all kind and all forms of oppressions on women; socially, physically, and morally. This paper argues the use of sexuality to practice the oppression and the control of men over women. In the sixties, the feminist movements put women in charge of their bodies and their sexuality at the first sight. The birth control pills were a huge argues at the time, yet, it was a first step for women to gain control over their bodies. In the following years, The Feminist Movement demanded women get equal opportunities, pays, responsibilities and choices. However, we somehow still find ourselves living in a world where women are judged and accused about their sexuality. They want them to be an object of sexual desire, yet they expect them to be pure. Considering Jessica Valenti suggests that this is all based on the purity myth; the myth where being a virgin is symbolized purity and innocence while not being a virgin is being in the other side and considered as a whore, impure and unfeminine. She sees that Virginity ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. The Oppression Of Women In The Sambia In the Sambia women are perceived as healthy and men worn down. This is because women are seen as being gifted with the production of blood, which in this culture is associated with vitality and longevity for this gender. If these female fluids are present in males it is believed that their development will be inhibited (Herdt, 1987:76–77). Through this it is made clear that women are somewhat powerful figures with the potential to impact masculinity substantially. This is further enforced through the notion that female consumption of semen– the fluid responsible for masculine development– would be perceived as strong like males and not vulnerable (Herdt, 1987:34). Overall it seems as though women are at a (biological) advantage to males: they are healthier than males, have the potential to inhibit male development and benefit from inducing male fluids. This in turn suggests that women are important in this culture which I found particularly interesting considering the expanse of oppression faced by women over the years in western societies. During the 19th century women were confined by labels such as 'the angel of the house' associated with fragility and weakness. It was therefore socially accepted that women were supressed and rejected, leading to gender power struggles (Anderson, 2004). Comparing and contrasting western views of ... • 11. The Oppression Of Women In Iraq Some say the world is our oyster. There are so many beautiful places to visit and many adventures to experience in the short lives that we live. With the vast choices available the one place I would not live Baghdad, Iraq. Baghdad is the largest a city within Iraq, and it is experiencing many violent acts. Here, the women are also oppressed. They must govern themselves according o their male figures. The biggest reason I cannot live here is because it is too far from home for me. In recent years, there has been significant media coverage on Iraq partly because of the violence that is happening daily. Anti–Western terrorists groups, such as Osama bin Laden's Al Qaeda and ISIS have originated in this country. Even though these groups are anti–Western, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As not only a young woman, but also a human being, I do not desire to be subservient to another person. As a child I have been taught to work hard for things that I desire, but here in Baghdad women are not even allowed that opportunity. Without the permission of their male counterparts they cannot act on anything. Living here would disgrace the people that came before me. The people who have fought so hard here in America so that I may have an opportunity to be successful. My family members who who have fought hard to get me here today. To live in Baghdad would make their efforts null and void. I am not willing to give up my free will to think or act as an individual. Lastly, I could not live in Baghdad simply because it is too far away from home. I come from a close knit family, in Charleston. Everyday I call home just to stay connected while I'm away, even knowing that I could drive home at any given time. If I were to move to Iraq, I would be 7,000 miles away. I would no longer have the accessibility to my family that I am so familiar and comfortable having. To be so far away would truly leave me miserable because I would essentially be without them, and phone calls can never compare to physically being with my family. In conclusion, Baghdad is not a livable city for me. It is a place of extreme violence and unrest. Not to mention the women there do not have a voice or a choice in their lives. • 13. Oppression Of Women The actions of Delilah in Judges toward Samson accurately depicts that of a woman who has woven her way into the heart of a man only to expose and exploit him for personal gain. This is, perhaps, a founding basis for Milton's view of women as a naturally inevitable source of weakness for men. But the persona of Delilah created by Milton in Samson Agonistes as she presents an insincere, haughty, and prideful "apology" to Samson is a reflection of what can be seen as Milton's fear of a deceptive woman in the life of a man. To put it plainly, women left unchecked by a man have potential danger that is unparalleled and it must be kept in check. Although Milton clearly illustrates his view of women as being the lesser of the sexes and as a potential ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Therefore, the women presented in Miltonic Literature are deceptive, prideful, and ultimately a source of weakness for men. According to Professor Zuckerman, the notion of a "good woman" found in Proverbs 31 can be directly tied to the Hebrew phrase "eshet chayil". This phrase means "a woman of valour". The actions of a woman of valour are not the same as the actions of a man formed in valour as previously discussed in this paper. However, the actions a woman of valour are clearly detailed in the following verses of Proverbs 31. The scripture states that a good woman will have the trust of her husband while doing him good, and no harm, for the rest of her life. This entails that a woman should be concerned, first and foremost, with the successes of her husband. She is to consistently support him and provide him with the help he needs while never crossing swords or creating conflict with him. This is an interesting observation because, according to Professor Zuckerman, if one looks further into the meaning of "eshet chayil", it is found that the phrase comes in reference to a woman that gives a man ... • 15. The Oppression Of Women Historically, men have been considered the only sex and women, the Other, and as a result, men's views and opinions have created myths of what women in society are expected to conform to and exhibit. Many of the expectations developed are restrictive and oppressive to women. One such expectation that men have developed and perpetuated is that a woman exists to fulfill his sexual needs. Man is the superior being and his "ideal woman" is one that will unquestionably submit to his domination (Beauvoir 201). In addition, men's domination over women, places women in a state of dependence. Women are largely reliant on men for economic necessities and security. However, women's reliance on men, leaves them vulnerable to male's oppression on them. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Fantastic expectations are incredibly oppressive, but so is reality. Women are virtually guaranteed to be oppressed in every facet of reality because of male's overwhelming dominance, but women hold some responsibility in society's ability to ensure that masculine dominance and feminine subjectivity continues to persist. Women enable societally oppressive attitudes toward them as they accept their position as the Other through submission and justification (Beauvoir). Therefore, men are not only to blame for women's oppression. Women have been subjected to such oppression, domination, and apparent lack of agency because in society, both men and women have justified its existences. This has enabled man to continually shape women's perspective, a perspective that they are inferior, they exist to please, and that they are the Other sex (193). Women reason that there is a purpose behind their position in society and in many ways, work relentlessly to conform to what man has deemed appropriate rather than revolting and attempting to combat such oppression. Not all women are guilty of such subservience, in fact, historically many have attempted to rebel and attempt to delegitimize male's superiority yet, all have been met with male oppression and halted. Small gains have been made giving women more fluidity within society, but women are still limited in numerous ways. However, such gains act to threaten what society has deemed appropriate ... • 17. The Oppression Of Women In The Piano The Piano tells me women have no choice and have the right to become involved in sexual affairs when they are not satisfied with their husband. The woman is portrayed as the victim and the oppressed as well as brave enough to break away from that oppression in media. I found the way she breaks away from the oppression of her husband quite interesting. The photograph entitled "Artist" by Sukran Moral (Moral, Artist, 1994) portrays this gaze in a very explicit, yet creative/effective way. It shows a half–naked woman posing as Christ hanging on a Cross. Very controversial, however I think it really speaks in a way that it implies and reminds us of the position woman is in. It tells me woman is like Jesus, nailed to a cross, naked and everyone is staring at her and enjoying the pain and torture she must endure. But the conflict here is that the woman enjoys it or at least has accepted and internalized the "gaze". ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 19. The Oppression Of Women "To men a man is but a mind. Who cares what face he carries or what he wears? But woman's body is the woman." (Ambrose Bierce 1958) Humans have defined beauty not just as health, youth, and symmetry, which people are biologically programmed to admire, but also tall slender figures, femininity, and pale skin. People are skeptical about this statement and believe that what women accuse the media of influencing is actually the influence of our own mind and other people. While this accusation may be true that people are the enemies of their own mind, I believe no one deserves to feel shame over the way they look. • 21. Oppression Of Women And Women Of Color For my Final project in WS, I have chosen to talk about the oppression of women, and women of color. To narrow more in on the topic, I have chosen to discuss the oppression of women in the work force and all the different forms of oppression women face. Oppression is defined as, "A situation in which people are governed in an unfair and cruel way and prevented from having opportunities and freedom," (dictionary.cambridge.org). Oppression can be caused by many different things. People can feel oppressed because they are being compared to the opposite gender. People can be oppressed being compared to other age groups. And people can feel oppressed when being compared to different races. Women of color feel oppressed because they are constantly being compared to white women, and some may say they do not always have the same privileges as others. I have enjoyed reading and researching about this topic, but at the same time have had a hard time truly understanding it. To be completely transparent I am a privileged white girl and throughout my whole life I have never felt that I faced oppression. I have witnessed it, but never experienced it. The oppression I have witnessed has only been in the work force; which I will discuss later on. In our first reading in this class we read a book called Sisters in Spirit which was about the differences between the Haudenosaunee women and White women. When I was first reading this I kept thinking "how unfair the situation was and that I ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 23. Women 's Oppression Of Women The oppression of women has been brought into light in the recent years but it was the norm in many societies in early history especially in premodern east Asia. During that time, the roles of men and women in society were determined by great scholars that had the power to get their voice to be heard and set general rules in society. In China, scholars like Confucius, Mencius, and Mozi had great impact on the way people divided the roles between men and women. The overall oppression of women in premodern east Asia can be seen through quotes from great scholars about how women should be obedient to men, should not make important decisions in their families, and are not spoken of equally to men in society. She then has to obey and serve her husband's family because that is what the ideal woman was supposed to do. One way that some people tried to deny the sexist behavior in China is saying that women actually have more power than men. They supported this idea by saying that women can control their sons or husbands which directly reflects on controlling Chinese society. This argument is invalid because, although women did have some sort of control over their sons and husbands, it was not the kind of control that would affect their career or important decisions. The kind of control that they had was within the family. For example, if they wanted something to be done within the family and they knew they did not have the power to do it, they would try to use their husbands or sons as an excuse. However, this did not have a great effect on the important issues of their husbands and sons. Even if they were going to use the males as an excuse, the males have the ultimate decision and control of whether they will listen to the wife or disregard her wishes. Additionally, women were expected to do certain tasks in the household that would keep them busy throughout the day and keep them from interfering with the outside, where men were supposed to be. Firstly, the film indicates female's disadvantaged status in the society since all female figures in Bedeviled are persecuted by masculine dominance. The protagonist Hae–wön shows indifferent to other women who need her help, because she is afraid of male's vengeance. For example, she refuses to be a witness when she sees that a girl is raped by three men, and she also pretends that she knows nothing about the little girl's death. We cannot simply blame her indifference because the patriarchal society does not give her enough protection to upload justice. As a result, Hae–wön chooses to be indifferent ... • 27. The Oppression Of Women "The extension of women's rights is the beginning of all social progress." –Charles Fourier Initially. Women have always been seen as the fragile sex, the one that has to be protected and kept safe. Still, not everybody thinks like that. There are several places around the world where women are seen as the weaker sex or even a burden. In order for women to be valued more we have to address the issues behind the cause, and we need to find a solution immediately. We need to achieve social progress by fighting all the types of oppression against women and by creating a better future for them. By creating more schools, more girls will be able to show and participate in achieving an education. With a basic education they can acquire better paying jobs or even continue into college to obtain a degree in something that will help them succeed. • 29. The Oppression of Women The Oppression of Women Imperialism is used to gain authority and control over one state or people in the form of an empire, based on practices of dominance and the idea of superiority. The term can be found in the history of Japan, the Chinese Empire, Greece, ancient Egypt and the British Empire. From 1934 to 1945, Hitler ran Germany by promoting anti–Semitism, Pan–Germanism, and anti– communism to gain the support of the German people. In this time he was the leader of a mass genocide which killed approximately six million Jews during World War II. During the 19th and 20th century, slavery was prominent in the United States where black women and men were powered by their masters. Stolen from their original homes, they were forced to work for little or no pay. In Islam, women are sold into arranged marriages at a very young age. They lose their property to the men they are married to and are controlled by their husbands. In any civilization, it is easy to see how imperialism has affected many different religious groups, people of different ethnicities, and genders. Women have been targeted and discriminated throughout our world's history. Many women have fought and gone against their society's rules to prove that justice should be given to them. Women have been discriminated by their sex, jobs, pregnancy, race, and religion. In pre– agricultural societies, women held equal positions as men. • 31. Women 's Oppression Of Women The oppression of women is best described as a steel cage, crafted over the centuries by the hands of patriarchal powers, enslaving flightless and chirp less birds. Birds may be benevolent and gentle, yet they embody a power most ferocious amongst all creatures. Though, it is of no fascination as to why women, in being similar to birds, transform from powerful peoples to frail figures. The molestation of power from these birds is done by the hindering cage encompassing them. The thick bars of oppression slice the wings of the benevolent beings, strip the voice of the once vociferous, and above all destroy the benign life of the feminine. These feminine figures have the potential to provide light when light is dark, fly the silky sky, and, of utmost importance, break free from the shackles that bear them down. Yet, only a few women have been notably brave to do so, and thus have confronted the powerful patriarchal powers that serve to enslave them and earned the titles of feminists. Feminism is an evolving philosophy which serves to destroy the intellectual paradigm that women are subservient to males by nature. Yet, although feminism is essentially a product of the contemporary world, many figures in history have demonstrated pre–feminist ethics of which has given birth to the philosophies of modern feminism. Like Marxism which locates the roots of inequality in capital ownership, feminism points to the domination of males in society (patriarchy) being the root of human inequalities and injustices. We see that inequalities are pervasive aspects of our modern lives meaning men have economic, political, and cultural power while women do not. It is seen that women occupy the marginal spaces of private life and domesticity while men generally control public life. • 49. Oppression Of Women The oppression of women has been a constant trend throughout American history. While the US has made advancements to the equality of women, to this day women are not treated equally to men. (Intro – do last) White women in the upper middle and working class saw a correlation between the oppression of slaves and the oppression they faced as women, both treated as inferiors in society. Many women supported the abolitionist movement to express their ideas of equality and the push for universal suffrage. The abolitionist movement was originally created to ensure the ending of slavery. Women joined the movement under the impression of fighting for slaves' basic rights and suffrage would guarantee theirs as well. The First Wave of feminism was born and tempered during this movement, training women to be able to conceptualize and express their feminist consciousness. One of the most well–known women that was both an abolitionist and feminist was Elizabeth C. Stanton. Deeply involved in the reform movement she was a leader of the suffrage movement and author of the "Declaration of Sentiments" calling upon other women to stand up and petition for their rights. Many suffragists such as Stanton argued they were human beings first and females second, implying their lives consisted of more than just their sex roles. For hundreds of years oppression has had a heavy presence in several communities in America such as women, Mexicans, poor people; all victims of "unjust/cruel exercise of authority". All of these people continue to fight to this day for the same rights that rich white American men are handed. • 55. Women Oppression In Literature We're Not Going To Take It: Women Oppression in Literature What is oppression? Oppression is defined as "prolonged cruel or unjust treatment" ("Oppression" par. 1) Women have experienced maltreatment since the Fall of Mankind. The subjection of women has decreased within the past two centuries, due to their natural rights being acknowledged. Over the years, people have protested the treatment of women through literature. "Girl," "Married Life," "Punishment," and "The Declaration of Sentiments" shares the theme of women's oppression. Despite having the same themes, the authors use distinct social context and develop their arguments differently. Jamaica Kincaid, author of "Girl," displays the unfair treatment of young women in Antiguan society. In the poem, a girl is receiving a lecture on how to be a woman. She is not encouraged to be herself or to gain an education. In fact, the mother continuously refers to her as a slut, "the slut I know you are so bent on becoming" (Kincaid 1146) The role of the Antiguan woman is that of homemaker. Berleant–Schiller suggests, "the domestic domain of women is sometimes implicitly regarded as inferior" (Berleant–Schiller 254). Women in Antiguan society are taught extensively how to prepare meals and set tables. Where and how an Antiguan family eat indicates their social standing (Berleant–Schiller 259). Kincaid identifies the importance of the meal place through the use of repetition. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

To a certain extent a considerably amount of this persecution was an extension of the capitalist exploitation that men experienced at work. Throughout history, women have been belittled, abused, and discriminated against. The ideology behind these views has been challenged, but still women all around the world have continued to be oppressed and silenced as a result of practices in today's societies that perpetuate the oppression of women and the continuation of gender–based violence and discrimination. Ending these practices is key to the end of gender–based discrimination, as the control and silencing of women cannot happen otherwise. In many developing nations, the oppression of women is continued due to many cultural traditions that have the effect of limiting a girl's autonomy and agency, from even before adulthood. Christianity is the world's largest religion and its oppression of women will be brought to light. Christians use their beliefs and stance to oppress women socially, physically and mentally. Christianity, is the belief in Christ as the one and only God and his teachings transmitted through the holy bible. Christians often fall into two categories, Conservatives and Liberals. Conservatives are more likely to follow their religion more strictly and to be devoted to scripture. They often believe everything in the bible undoubtedly and for this reason, are more likely to oppress women, using scripture as an ok for this behavior. Liberals, on the other hand, are more open minded and mainly focus on the teaching of God's unconditional love for all. Liberals are more likely to be egalitarian while Conservatives are more likely to have prejudice towards people who have different beliefs or way of life. Christianity oppresses women in one huge way which is by emphasizing the belief that women are created for men and are meant to serve their husband. One verse that demonstrates this is, "He [Solomon] had seven hundred wives of royal birth and three hundred concubines, and his wives led him astray. 1 Kings 11:3 (Tarico, 2012)" This verse shows that women were seen as objects and married against their will so that their husband would have a better ... Women of color have been subjected to the justifications of unfair treatment from their oppressors– both male and female– for generations and are expected to identify with misconceived definitions that have been externally attributed to their own realities. There is an immense pressure on the women of color who have broken out of the cycle of this socioeconomic imprisonment to maintain their standing within society 's good graces. This is often discussed as though these women have something to hide, as though a friendly and modest demeanor are enough to erase the layers of transgenerational trauma from sight of the very same oppressors that caused it. At the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Claudia Rankine, an award–winning poet and essayist who 's work often revolves around racial themes, wrote an article for The New York Times in 2015 entitled "The Meaning of Serena Williams." Both pieces mention Williams ' comfortability within her own skin. Both pieces accurately convey the ability she has to bend situations to her will and thrive under circumstances of her own creation. However, Rodrick takes on an underlying tone of critical commentary whereas Rankine uses one of comradery and empowerment. Throughout his writing, Rodrick makes Williams ' out to be someone who has completely bought into materialism and has a knack for self– indulging gluttony. Zeroing in on irrelevant comments about her lifestyle (such as her excitement to get her nails done and her unenthusiastic response to being reminded about morning practice) Rodrick writes, "No athlete alive dominates a sport like Serena Williams does tennis. But on the whole, she 'd rather be eating a cinnamon roll" (Rodrick). In context, a comment like this serves to police and shame her unrestricted nutritional choices. His writing lacks perspective and, although he does occasionally intersperse tidbits of factual information into his dearth narrative, he tends to do so in a scathingly dismissive way. • 67. The Issue Of The Oppression Of Women Helen Clark once said, "Any serious shift towards more sustainable societies has to include gender equality." One would think that after all of the changes that have taken place in the world for the better, equality would be one of the fixed assets. However, everyday experiences humans have in areas worldwide portray otherwise. The belief that one gender is more superior to another, especially men being superior to women, is a huge issue that continues to this day all over the world. The oppression of women is prolonged cruel or unjust treatment or the control of women. It is very unfair for women to undergo this mistreatment and unjust that is brought to them, and this problem has been occurring for several hundreds of years. As this issue ... • 69. Oppression of Women Women go through distressing cruelty and oppression mostly because America is a patriarchal society, a male dominated society in which older men are in positions of power. Many unfortunate evils run loose and free in this society because either society does little to stop it, or at times, even encourages this destructive behavior. In the articles "Battering: Who's Going to Stop It" and "Protecting Male Abusers and Punishing the Women Who Confront Them" we see one of these unfortunate evils and the damaging effect of it against women. Women are beaten helplessly without the aid of any of our patriarchal authorities in achieving justice, as if justice falls solely on the footsteps of men. In the articles "The Politics of Housework" and "The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Plus, they are also blamed for allowing their man's abusive behavior and failing to protect her child. Instead of blaming the true person in the wrong, the man, our patriarchal society once again puts the blame on the woman. Sexism is another unfortunate evil that is firmly fixed into our patriarchal structure of society. Our society has been organized around the idea that public fields of our society, such as work and education are a man's territory, and the private matters, such as family, is a woman's niche. The contradiction between the truth of many women's lives and the social institutions shaped by this belief in division of roles is a major source of tension in contemporary society. It is even a major source of tension within the household, as seen in "The Politics of Housework". The work done in the home, such as housework and nurturing, demands a lot of attention, attention and skill. Women still do much of this work at home even though their participation in the work field has increased. This article demonstrates the struggle involved in getting men to share in the responsibility for chores. Since housework is associated with women, it is seen as demeaning and lacing in value. The husband provides numerous complaints to doing housework since it should be a woman's job. One was that he hates it more than her, but she doesn't mind it so much. A comment which had a very sexist underlying meaning that housework is degrading ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 73. The Negative Oppression Of Women The Negative Effect of the Oppression of Women Women have been oppressed by men since the beginning of time. It is only now that society is doing something about this and realizing the negative effects this injustice has had. The maltreatment of women affects females in their day to day lives, since long ago, and still in present day. Characters from The House of Mirth by Edith Wharton, The Awakening by Kate Chopin, and 'Proem' by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, will reveal how the oppression of women can affect people's lives in a negative way. In the text 'The House of Mirth' by Edith Wharton, the protagonist, Lily Bart, is oppressed by society because she is a female. Lily needs to get married to become more accepted in the upper class ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "He would work and struggle for her, he would shelter and defend her,– She should never leave him, never, till their eyes in death were dim." This shows how just because a man protects a woman, or provides shelter or care for her, she is indebted to him forever, and expected to love him until the end of time. "Close, close he bound her, that she should leave him never; Weak still he kept her, lest she be strong to flee". This shows how man persecutes woman and binds her in his rules and power, he keeps her weak so that he will remain in power over her. If woman is kept weak by having no place in society without a man, she will need to stay with him to keep her place. "And woman? He will hold her,–he will have her when he pleases–". This reveals how women must bend to man's every will and command. If he has her when he pleases, sometimes she would have to have him when she does not want to. "Gone the friend and comrade of the day when life was younger, She who rests and comforts, she who helps and saves." Woman has been mistreated so long that she is now a shell of her former self, and all she does are her duties that man has put upon her. "The ages of her sorrow have but taught her to forgive!" She has been tormented for so long that even after all the horrors Man has put her through, she still forgives him for his actions. Her compassion for him lasts because she knows that she will have no place without him, so she needs his love and companionship to have a place in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 75. Medieval Oppression Of Women Over the medieval period oppression of women has been a problem and has not been solved up to now. Various movements have taken place against these dilemmas but they still exist in our nation and while they prevail they've given an upswing to problems and instances of obnoxious behavior. Women have been unjustly held back from achieving full equality for much of human history. In the novel 'The Palace of Illusions', Princess Panchali said "He was always trying to discourage me from attending Dhri's lessons– and he wasn't the only one. At first, no matter how much I begged, King Drupad had balked at the thought of me studying with my brother. A girl being taught what a boy was supposed to learn? Such a thing had never been heard of in the royal family of Panchal!" Dhai Ma denied Panchali of accessing the lessons that Dhri was learning as she believed that they were making her argumentative and too manlike in her speech. Practices followed during the medieval period showed us the predominant injustice of our times is the widespread, tyrannical oppression of women. The feudal society of the time encouraged "Sati" which meant self–immolation of the widow. By burning herself on the pyre of her husband, she proves her loyalty. Even the child widows were not spared from this gruesome ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 77. Oppression Of Women By Marriage Oppression of Women by Marriage Maybe it is because Eve was created from a spare rib of Adam? Maybe because men are better hunters, well most men? From the beginning of time, the role of a woman in a marriage has been accepted as that of a civil servant to her family. The wife is responsible for taking care of the welfare, in addition to putting her life; if she ever dreamed of one, down in complete replacement of what her husband 's goals. In the 19th century especially, when women suffrage was starting to take shape, the definition of the perfect wife continued to be embedded into our society. The Story of the Hour by Kate Chopin, through the use of situational and dramatic irony, foreshadowing, and diction, shines a light on how the institution of marriage continue to not only repress, but put women in a role similar to that of a civil servant. Across the world, though they differentiate slightly, responsibilities of men and women seem to resonate soundly. History shows that in Eastern Cultures, woman was seen as prizes to be respected and treasured, for this reason, marriage women took their responsibilities duties very seriously. However, they were designated to become only mothers and later grandmothers to serve and produce heirs for the men of the clan. Though proven beneficial, in the aspect of allowing for preceding generations to be able to efficiently educate the newer generations, women were bounded by their homes. In colonial American, marriage was viewed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
