Built this ship to wreck shot count
1. Built This Ship To Wreck - Florence and The
Machine
In this Particular music video, the
director has chose to deliberately use a
small number of shots of 16 shots,
throughout the whole video. This goes
against conventions of music videos as,
stereotypically, music videos usually use a
larger number of shots, ranging between 60-
100+ shots.
As well as the number of shots used, the
length of the shots used also challenge
conventions of music videos of any genre,
but can be seen often in indie rock genres
but never continuously. This is because
every shot lasts at least 8 beats as each
shot runs into each other. This is very
beneficial for the audience as it makes
them understand the storyline more as the
continuity edit is very smooth.
Additionally, it intrigues the audience to
watch more as they feel like they are
watching it from a first person
perspective, as though they are in the
scene with the characters.
Furthermore, this also helps the audience
understand the concept of the video by
making it clear that as the title of the
song suggests ("Built this ship to wreck")
that when you begin a relationship, you
expect to have problems, which can
sometimes lead you to be fighting with
yourself at some points, but you are
expected to try and resolve these problems.
