2. PERFORMANCE LOCATIONS
hroughout scenes 1, 4, 7, 9 and 11.
he location which is being used throughout the performance scenes is either
the school hall stage or the theatre stage. The stage helps to indicate the idea
of a live performance, which is reoccurring throughout American rock music
videos. Rather than having several locations throughout the performance
shots (i.e. a stage, in front of a backdrop, a room which is designed to identify
the band) I have decided to just use the stage as it will create continuity and
therefore it is less likely to cause confusion to the audience. The stage is used
throughout many American rock music videos which I have researched and
therefore helps the audience, along with mes-en-scene, to identify the band as
American rock.
3. NARRATIVE LOCATIONS
cene 2
hroughout the narrative shots there are several locations which all
help to tell a story to the audience. The first location which is
used in the narrative shots is the external and internal of a café-
this is where the man and woman within the music video meet.
This café is quite a public area and therefore he does not make
any irrational decisions due to the humiliation and
embarrassment he may cause upon himself- therefore his actions
tend to be very discrete (i.e. peering over the top of a newspaper).
4. NARRATIVE LOCATIONS
cene 3
his is located outside, where there is a wall to create a
divide between the man and the woman. This
portrays the idea of the wall being a ‘barrier’ between
the man getting the woman- which could also refer to
the idea of lacking in confidence and therefore the
wall is his safety and his comfortability.
5. NARRATIVE LOCATIONS
cene 5
he location of this scene would be the external and internal of
a shop. The shop is used as the man goes to buy a something
for the woman- as a present, but for her to wear to go out to
eat. The external shots include an establishing shot of the
outside of the shop to show the audience what it is the man is
going into. It also includes the shot of the man coming out of
the shop with some item of clothing in a bag. The internal
involves the man looking at several pieces of clothing before
deciding which one he thinks the woman would like.
6. NARRATIVE LOCATIONS
cene 6 and 8
his scene is shot at the house- in the bedroom. This is where the
man has put the dress- wrapped in the style of a present. The
woman then finds the presents and opens it, however, although
the man thought she would like it- she doesn’t. The woman
dresses in girly clothing- but underlying is the person she really
wants to be- which is this rock chick. Scene 8 is located in the
same place, however, the narrative involves the woman cutting
the dress up- portraying to the audience the idea that she does
not like it and therefore making the audience feel as though there
is something wrong – something she is hiding.
7. NARRATIVE LOCATIONS
cene 10
his section is located in the same place as scenes 6 and 8, the bedroom. However, during
scene 10 the setting changes as we go from a shot of the bedroom- moving to the
woman standing at the bottom of the stairs. It is two separate shots, however, it is made
to look like one continuous shot. Also within this section we identify that the woman is
acting a bit unusual as she is shouting the lyrics ‘I wanna feel like this for the rest of my
life’ at the man. This relating to the idea that she no longer wants to pretend she is this
girly girl, but instead wants to live as the rock chick that she secretly is.
8. NARRATIVE LOCATIONS
cene 12
his scene goes back to the bedroom, used in previous shots. This is
where the woman gets ready- however, not like we have seen her
before. Her make-up is made to look more ‘rock-like’ as well as her
choice of clothing. This scene only includes snippets of the girl as
she is getting ready- i.e. close-up of bandana, close-up of eye to
enhance the idea of ‘rock’ through the use of dark eye make-up.
This all then concludes with a shot of the women, once ready,
showing her ‘rock’ side. The audience will then understand why the
woman was acting so strange in previous scenes.
