The group was called the Varsity Victory Volunteers and focused on mostly construction work for
the army. On June 5, 1942 the 298th and 199th regiments were combined and consequently renamed
the Hawaiian Provisional Battalion. They were shipped to Oakland, California and a couple day
later to Camp McCoy, Wisconsin to begin training. On June 15, 1942 the Hawaiian Provisional
Battalion was renamed the 100th Infantry Battalion – the One Puka Puka.
Barney F. Hajiro was a Japanese American who fought so valiantly during WWII in the 100th
Battalion that he was awarded the Army's second highest decoration, the Distinguished Service
Cross by President Bill Clinton. Hajiro was born to a large immigrant family who relocated from
Hiroshima to Maui. As the eldest son, Hajiro renounced schooling in order to better help his family
with economical sustenance by performing menial tasks on a sugarcane plantation for 10 cents an
hour. Hahiro joined the army not long after Pearl Harbor was bombed. In March 1943, Hajiro joined
the all Nisei populated 442nd Battalion. While in the army, Hajiro repeatedly exposed himself to
enemy gunfire and ambushed an 18–men patrol unit with a comrade. He also single handedly
destroyed two German machine gun emplacements before suffering a gunshot to his arm. In
repercussion, his arm was partially paralyzed but Hajiro became recognized for his incredible

In these first years of the marines Lewis was acquired his nick name Chesty because of his perfect
body structure. This means he had a iron chest and that he was a extremely strong man. He was
assigned some jobs to do in Norfolk, Virginia, at the Marine Barracks and at the Basic school, and
the 10th Marine Artillery Regiment in Quantico, Virginia. Then in July of 1926 Chesty, was
assigned to the Marine barracks in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Two years later Chesty was assigned to the
Marine Barracks in San Diego, California. In that year Puller was assigned to the Nicaraguan
National card. This is were he received his first Navy Cross Award, for his actions between February
and August of 1930. First Lieutenant Puller, successfully led his forces into five successful battles
against superior numbers of armed bandit forces. They killed nine men and wounded a great amount
of them. Despite the danger of losing his life he dished out these five successful attacks on the
bandit forces. That's how Lewis Burwell Puller received his first Navy Cross. He returned home to
the United States in July 1931 and completed a year–long Company Officers Course at Fort
Benning, Georgia. Soon after returning to Nicaragua in September of 1932, Chesty received yet

the Merchant Marine has supported the United States in every single war it has fought. In their

The experience of a nondiscriminatory environment could have been shared with other African
Americans, which would have allowed for a model environment to work towards in the United
States. When the Harlem Hellfighters were turned over to the French Army, they helped to fight off
and repel the German offensive and to launch a counteroffensive. Alongside the French unit
primarily comprised of French Moroccans, the Harlem Hellfighters fought at Chateau–Thierry and
Belleau Wood, spending about 191 days in combat, which was the longest duration of time any

bias towards junior officers and junior soldiers not getting the higher awards. First, should military

According to ?AR 600–8–22 / 25 June 2015 para 3–1 c: The decision to award an individual a
decoration and the decision as to which award is appropriate are both subjective decisions made by
the commander having award approval authority. Awards for meritorious achievement or service
will not be based upon the grade of the intended recipient. Rather, the award should reflect both the
individual?s level of responsibility and his or her manner of performance. The degree to which an
individual?s achievement or service enhanced the readiness or effectiveness of his or her
organization will be the leading factor?.
I think the AR 600–8–22 is very clear on the guidance for awards and we need to change the way
awards are written and ensure the commander knows and understands the process.
My Personal Frustration with the Awards Process
As a Sergeant Major I have sat on numerous military awards boards and have written many
recommendations for awards for my soldiers and military personnel in my units. I was deployed to
Farah, Afghanistan with a combined joint force on a Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) in 2007
