These pieces of work include carved wood and stone, manuscripts on stone tablets and reeds,
illumination, calligraphy, enameled glass, inlaid metal work and glazed ceramics, preferably from
the Turkish and Iranian regions. A common characteristic among Islamic artworks is their brilliant
use of colors and the perfect balance between the design and form that they portray. These unique
features make these pieces of art create an immediate visual impact to the observers. The Types of
Artworks A common Islamic art masterpiece is the use of tiles, more so the Iranian Star–shaped tile
(Necipoglu 174). This is a 15th century artwork, probably made during the time when the Timurids
ruled over Iran (Doak 136). This star–like tile; as illustrated in Figure I below, has a decoration of
geometric shapes leaves and flowers on it, with a major flower being positioned right at the center of
the tile. These tiles were made to cover outer walls of buildings, with designs and colorful patterns,
to make such structures more beautiful. The tiles were fitted together using mortar on the walls of

Characteristics Of Lowbrow Art
Lowbrow Art Lowbrow art is a unique art movement that emerged in the 1970s in the shady corners
of Los Angeles, California. Lowbrow art has many labels such as underground, Neo–pop, and
Nobrow. Also known as pop surrealism, lowbrow art, was inspired by surf culture, punk music,
underground comix, and most importantly, cartoon and comics. Lowbrow art is a movement for the
millions of people who share a common culture. The movement has steadily grown since the 1970s
and isn't going anywhere soon. The pop culture prevalent in lowbrow art differs through each artist
and is represented through their imagery. In this paper, I am going to elaborate on the characteristics
of lowbrow art. Then, compare and contrast two contemporary lowbrow artist's works, Isabel
Samaras and Kenny Scharf (Esaak). Lowbrow art was born underground. Represented as "street"
culture, lowbrow is focused around retro and rebellious pop culture. Artists that created lowbrow
artwork are typically self taught and don't care about the recognition because often there was very

When most of us think of asphalt or tar, our minds wonder to the roads that our cars drive on.
Asphalt may appear to be an ordinary everyday thing we see and pay little to no attention to but, in
reality, it may hold a treasure of information on Earth's past history. In Hancock Park, Los Angeles,
CA it does just that. The La Brea Tar Pits were formed during the Pleistocene era over 40,000 years
ago and have supplied most of the fossils found during that era in the world (Polly, 1994). Many

I visited Los Angeles County Museum of Art for the exhibition named "Form in Fragments:
Abstraction in German Art, 1906–1925" which highlighted in abstraction in German Expressionism.
The exhibition was composed of over 60 works including works by Wassily Kandinsky, Franz Marc,
Lyonel Feininger, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Paul Klee, Erich Heckel, Otto Dix, and an abstract film
by Hans Richter. Among the many works on view, one of the Paul Klee's prints titled
Hoffmannesque Scene caught my eye.
Hoffmannesque Scene is a lithograph printed in black and colored inks on a wove paper that was
created in 1921 in Germany. The title of the print tells you that it recounts a particular scene that was
inspired by something. This abstract print depicts the freeform shapes of objects including human

The print is presented with antique brass, pastel brown, pale gold, wheat, and pale chestnut. These
undertones of colors that are softened or moderated create a feeling of gloom and calm at the same
time. In addition, Klee used the technique of color blocking by overlapping squares. There is no
particular color that dominates the entire image or completely catches a viewer's attention. However,
Klee emphasized on harmonization of colors by considering not only the combination of the colors
but also the composition and the scale of the blocks. Each block blends harmoniously into one
another so that it creates a sense of rhythmical or rhythmic changes, even though those colors used

Biography of Loretta Lux
Loretta Lux grew up in Soviet occupied East Germany. She was raised inside the Berlin Wall that
came down when she was 20 years old. A year after the wall came down in 1990 Loretta stared
studying paintings and art which she perused until 1996. Three years on and she had started
studying photography. In 2004 she had her first solo show in America at the Yossi Milo Gallery,
New York. In 2005, Loretta received the Infinity Award for Art from the International Center of
Photography. Her work has since been exhibited extensively abroad, including solo exhibitions in
2006 at the Fotomuseum Den Haag, The Netherlands, and the Sixth Moscow Photo biennale.
Loretta's main influences in her art are by painters such as Agnolo Bronzino, Diego Velázquez, and
Phillip Otto Runge. In Loretta's photographs she uses a very soft pastel colour pallet, this gives to us
a calm or soothing feel. Most of her photographs are of young children, she says that she likes
working with children because they are young, innocent and easier to work with. Loretta makes the

are there for the express purpose of viewing, and hopefully, appreciating art. I have been to LACMA
countless times, starting from the time that I was a very young girl, but never before had I gone with
a specific assignment to complete – to view LACMA's collection of Renaissance art in order to
compare and contrast pieces in their exhibit to the works of art that we have studied in Humanities

Portrait of a Man is a detailed representation of an unnamed individual painted with oil on oak
panel. Like van Eyck's The Arnolfini Wedding, Portrait of a Man is rich in vibrant hues, and highly
detailed. The aforementioned painting by van Eyck, which is a full length portrait that shows a
couple in their home around the time of their marriage, has a more complex composition than
Portrait of a Man, and is rich in symbolism. Christus' piece portrays the individual up close, from
the shoulders up, with a black background. While it may have less accompanying detail in the
background, the individual is portrayed in a realistic, vibrant detail that is reminiscent of van Eyck's
style. The unnamed man has a serious expression on his face, with what seems to be some facial
stubble and bags under his eyes that makes one wonder what it is that is going on with him. Dressed
in what appears to be a plush red velvet tunic, it's almost as if one could reach out and stroke the
fabric.
I did not get to view the specific Renaissance artists that we covered in class as LACMA does not
have in their permanent collection Renaissance artists such as Raphael, van Eyck, Botticelli or Da
Vinci. I did however, greatly enjoy viewing their contemporaries and felt that I had done so with a

This fascination can be seen the sculptural quality of his painting, which can be compared to a style
similar to Greek funerary art. The figure in the painting is wearing traditional ancient Greek tunic,
and the head covering that the woman wears is similar to those worn as an ancient Roman custom.
Like traditional Greco–roman art, Picasso focuses a lot of attention on the face of the figure, while

On Saturday, January 17st, 2016, I visited the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in Los Angeles,
California. In the museum, I observed many pictures, paintings and sculptures within the exhibit of
the museum. What interested me was this sculpture called "Sweet William" by John Chamberlain.
John Chamberlain is best known for junk art and assemblage artist. He was born in 1927 in
Rochester, Indiana and died in 2011. He grew up in Chicago and he studied at the Art Institute of
Chicago and Black Mountain College. Since 1955, he began working in metals and remained many

For my enrichment report, I decided to take a trip to the Los Angeles County Museum. However, I
was trapped with the challenging choice of choosing only one museum for my cultural visit. Since,
there are so many prodigious and amazing museums to choose from to visit in the county. But, I
have heard many great feedbacks about the Los Angeles County Museum of Art from fellow classes
mates, friends and family. So, I finally, had my destination set to and planned a visit to the Los
Angeles County Museum of Art. Upon my visit my attention was already fixated on the unique
building layout and the many arts exhibited located all around the outside of the museum building.
There were several building that housed the many different art exhibits. Such as the first building I
walked into, after purchasing a ticket. This building was called the "Ahmanson" building, which
housed voluminous and diverse art of the European, Islamic, South and Southeast Asian Art, Art of
the Ancient World, Art of the Pacific and Others. There were also many special exhibitions that was
hosted at the time of my visit, such as the modern art gallery and Rifkin Gallery for German
Expressionism. One of the sculpture centered in the middle of the building of the "Ahmanson"
building called "Smoke" really caught my attention. As it quite an enigmatic and stunning metal

Who Is Kehinde Wiley?
Kehinde Wiley's large–scale, brightly colored, highly patterned portraits of African American
subjects are a salute to traditional portraiture as well as a critique of the art historical focus on the
privileged male Caucasian. The artist scouts out ordinary black men of ages 18 to 25 from urban
settings to copy poses from works by master Western painters like Titian and Jean–Auguste–
Dominique Ingres. The photographs of their poses become Wiley's references for his enormous,
dazzlingly vibrant portraits. The extreme realism of the figure combined with intense color use,
decorative patterning, and larger–than–life scale all emphasize the extravagant grandeur of power
and male dominance. Wiley has radically shifted the paradigm to make a contemporary statement
about the long absence of the black male figure in historical portraiture. Wiley was born in 1977 in
crime–laden South Central, Los Angeles, and was enrolled in weekend art classes at California
State, Los Angeles, by his mother to keep him away from neighborhood dangers. He later received
his bachelor's degree in 1999 at the San Francisco Art Institute, and then a master's degree in 2001 at
Yale. His first artist residency at the Studio Museum in Harlem began his practice of street casting

acquired "the remarkable Madina Collection of Islamic art. The collection contains works of various
media dating from the late 7th through 19th centuries from the vast areas that comprise the Islamic

It is very rounded and almost appears as though it is to be only held, and never set down. There is a
design around the rim of the cup. The design is a repetitive design and appears to be an almost
universal type design that could be attributed to any culture. It is something of a floral, or leaf design

There is a finial from the 14th century Northern Iran, perhaps from Mazanderan (Los Angeles
County Museum of Art, 2005). This piece is intricately carved from wood and possesses traces of
paint (Los Angeles County Museum of Art, 2005). It measures 14 inches tall and 6 inches in
diameter at its widest point. It is wide at its base and tapers off, not completely to a point, at the top.
It is a very solid as well as very patterned piece of art, or architecture. Like the previous items
discussed or examined, it seems to have a very symmetrical feel to it, as there is not necessarily a
picture to be seen, but a repetitive element that is seen throughout the piece, or all around the piece
in this case. The carving appears to be open carving in that there are holes in the finial where there is

(3) To have the video of these stories added to the collections at various local and national

Marshall was born in Birmingham, Alabama, 1955. The civil rights movement was in his

The Types of Artworks A common Islamic art masterpiece is the use of tiles, an example being the
Iranian Star–shaped tile (Necipoglu 174). This is a 15th century artwork, star like tile: illustrated in

types of artwork by different artists. In 1920 Robert Michel created a painting named "Ship", which
it contained many visual elements such as cool and warm colors curvilinear geometric figures. First
of all, Michel shows the viewer a lot of curvilinear lines meaning a consisting of, bounded by, or
characterized by a curved line, or a along a curved line of a set of coordinates determined by or
determining a system of three orthogonal surfaces (definition from the internet). Geometric

got to the museum, the first thing that caught my eye was the Urban Lights sculpture built in 2008
outside, by Chris Burden. The sculpture has two–hundred and two restored cast iron antique street
lamps. The sculpture was painted in white and the actual size was 320 ½ x 686 ½ x 704 ½ inches.
Also the whole building had remarkable architectural features. As you walk from room to room,

Museum Report After visiting the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), I felt as if this
was an entire new experience for me, seeing that this was my first time to visit a museum. Before
entering the museum, I decided to analyze the front entrance of the Ahmanson building. What I
observed is that the inventor of the building kept it simple and precise, which there were red metal
bars that supported the front entrance. And there was a glass door incorporated into the entrance as
well, this glass door would consist of information of what type of art is inside. For example, modern
art, Islamic art, European art, and so on. As I went inside, I was welcomed with an enormous piece
of art that encompassed several geometric shapes. Likewise, this art piece could be studied from
multiple perspectives, from the first floor and second floor. As for the work of arts, most of the art

went through many transformations from the blue and rose period to cubism style of artwork, many

Picasso uses blue colors to enhance the painting to show deep emotions the two figures are feeling.
According to the Los Angeles County Museum analysis of Picasso's painting Sebastian Juner Vidal
mentions that Vidals eyes stare confidently at the viewer, while the woman at his side provides the
only splashes of bright color in the painting (LACMA. Art Tells A Tale.). In the painting Sebastian
Vidal stares straight ahead at something and his face gives off a fierce expression making him look
very authoritative or even mighty. The woman beside Vidal appears sad and not paying attention to
her surroundings or she seems lost in her own

Saint Michael Casting Satan Into Hell
One of the art pieces that I have chosen is called "Saint Michael Casting Satan into Hell" created by
Francesco Picano after a design by Lorenzo Vaccarno. This piece was made in 1705 in Italy
(Naples) during the times of Italy 's Renaissance movement. According to the article "Brief History
of Italy" by Tim Lambert states that, "The 18th century was an age of enlightenment when the
power of the church was curtailed"(sec 8). Which stating that during this time religion was highly
focused in their works as a gateway for new ideas. This artwork is located at the Los Angeles
County Museum of Art inside the Ahmanson building on the third floor, in the center of the exhibit
under European art. The reason why I chose this piece is because this piece was interesting, how
they represent the idea how it's represented in the stories that was focused in the work. As well as
how it's place near the center so people can observe it from many different angles. This piece is a
sculpture work that uses Polychromed wood and glass that were carved and molded into and it 's at
least two feet tall.
The next piece that I have chosen is called "Dancer's Headpiece in The Form of the Hindu Goddess
Kali" created in India. It was made in the late 15th century in India, Kerala during the time period of
ancient India. This artwork is located at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art inside the
Ahmanson building on the Fourth floor on the right hand side of the exhibit under South and
Southeast Asian art
