MCKILLICAN Dollar General (A) Ironically, small–box retailers like Dollar General owe their
growth to the success of our big–box rivals. The dominance of big–box retail fuels the demand for a
convenient alternative. – David Perdue, Chairman and CEO, Dollar General Walking through the
home cleaning aisle of a Dollar General store in Nashville, Tennessee, David Perdue, CEO of Dollar

Company annual reports. Retail in the United States The dollar store concept originated with the
five–and–dime model pioneered by Woolworth's, which was founded in 1878 in Utica, New York.
Other five–and–dime pioneers included W.T. Grant, J.J. Newbury's, McCory's, Kresge, McClellan's,
and Ben Franklin stores. These stores were usually situated in the downtown area of cities and towns
throughout the United States and offered merchandise at two price points: a nickel or a dime.
Inflation eventually took its toll, and stores were no longer able to sell any items for five or ten
cents, so they became known as "variety stores." Given 2 Dollar General (A) 607–140 that $0.05
in 1913, adjusted for inflation, was $1.01 in 2006 dollars, the five–and–dime retailing concept had
shown remarkable strength over the years.3 Woolworth's

Walmart, Dollar General, And Family Dollar
From my own experience, the three companies that could learn lessons from this case study are
Walmart, Dollar General, and Family Dollar. To me, these three companies could all use a lot of
help when it comes to product placement and meeting their customer needs (O'Brien & Marakas,
2011, p. 419–420). This brings me to the lessons to be learned from this case study. The use of the
simulation technology of the virtual store environments is a brilliant concept. It is fast becoming a
common practice among consumer product manufacturers and retailers (Breen, 2017). It is faster
and more cost efficient than the traditional in–store product testing. It also allows a company to get a
more accurate feel of the total shopping experience, just as if they were the ... Show more content on

If I owned those stores and I walked in them and took a look around, I would fire every district
manager I had for letting the employees get away with the mess those stores stay in. I would not fire
the store employees because I would have to shut all of the stores down. However, the district
managers should have been making them do their jobs. I have never in my life seen such a mess.
The store organization is awful, you do not have to worry about product placement because it is
usually on the floor or still in the boxes or who knows where. The executives of that company really
could learn a lot from the store simulators I believe. I personally do not know how some of their
stores keep their doors open. We have one in particular here in Lexington, that should have shut its
doors years ago. They never have enough help, there is never anything on the shelves, and the store
is always nasty. If the executives of these two companies could open the doors to the store simulator
built by the Kimberly–Clark Corp I Truly believe they would make many changes in management

Dollar General (DG): Brand of Choice for Low–Income Households / Dollar General (DG) and the
Bifurcation of American Households Low–end retailers serve an important function in American
society. Having been around for as long as people have lived in cities, low–end retailers provide an
affordable option for cash–strapped consumers looking to make ends meet. Today, low–end retail is
a highly competitive, multi–billion dollar industry that is serving the needs of low–income
households across the United States. Dollar General (DG) is America's largest low–end retailer.
Founded in 1939 and headquartered in Goodlettsville, Tennessee, Dollar General operates over

The company's size has given it numerous competitive advantages, including the ability to offer a
large selection of name brand and off–brand goods. The company will play a bigger role in the
discount market, as it expands into new territory and adds to its existing in–store selection.
America's economic recovery has generated mixed signals. On the one hand, US employers have
added an average of 230,000 jobs per month in 2014, as the unemployment rate has fallen to a more
than six–year low. On the other hand, overall wage growth has run stagnant and workforce
participation is at multi–decade lows. This likely means demand for discount goods will remain
steady for the foreseeable future as the economy returns to full–capacity. The company's ambitious
plans for expansion reflect its good standing and high–growth potential. Earlier this year Dollar
General announced plans to expand into three new US states. Expanding its operations into Rhode
Island, Maine and Oregon would give the company presence in 43 states.

Dollar General Case 1. Consider the $13.4 million of freight costs. What is the correct (GAAP)
method of accounting for these? How did Dollar General in fact originally account for these costs?
(Include in your answer a table of the effects on income in any years affected, both before and after
tax, of the correct accounting and the accounting they originally used. The correct GAAP method to
account for freight costs is as an expense of Cost of Goods Sold (COGS) that occur at the time
services are performed and completed. This is a cost of conducting on–going operations (in–bound

I believe that this item was a "secondary effect" of the restatement. Had the management not tried to

Executive Summary
Our group performed an analysis of Dollar General's external and internal environment, which
included a Porters Five Forces breakdown. Those findings as well as analysis on the company's
financial statements formed the basis for our recommendations. We considered several alternative
growth strategies for Dollar General to implement. Those strategies are, international expansion,
continued domestic expansion, internal improvements, extending services, and taking the company
private. We concluded that the most beneficial direction for the company is to go private thereby
relieving pressure to meet short–term objectives. We also believe that Dollar General can ... Show

In order to keep this price point Dollar General is at a disadvantage when 10% inflation happens
because Wal–Mart can just raise their prices and they cannot. Although these potential threats exist,
Dollar General has an arsenal of potential opportunities for the future.
Porters five forces
Bargaining Power of Suppliers
With 30% of Dollar General's inventory being made up from nationally known brands and the other
70% consisting of Private label brands, Dollar General does not face a large threat from the
bargaining power of suppliers. While the national brands are on par, or sometimes below, big box
stores such as Wal–Mart's prices. Dollar General's focus is supplying consumers with quality
products at the lowest price possible. Since the majority of their products are created internally the
power of supplies to control prices or production is very low.
Bargaining Power of Consumers
While there may be low bargaining power of suppliers, the bargaining power of consumers is
extremely high. The rise of the Internet has led to an unprecedented transparency of prices within
retail. It is now significantly easier to find the different prices offered at the various discount stores
in the U.S. Thus in order to keep customers from the other 23,000 discount retailers in the united
states, Dollar General must appease their customers at all costs in order to remain successful.

Employees – Regular employees are not that well paid but they are Ok. Since most of their stores
are located in rural areas, they are able to have employees for cheaper wages. 4. Respect – In a way,
people in rural areas do not have the experience of buying higher quality products. Most of those
Brands being sold by them are either lesser known ones or, specially made with discounted prices by
cutting corners. For example– if I buy a 'Brut' Deodorant for a $ 1.00, it's quality wouldn't be the
same as the one that I would buy from Maycees. Same goes with other products. In terms of
Respect, they need to respect the intelligence of the customer. So, those Brands mentioned in their
website is an eyewash and is of inferior quality. 5. Opportunity – Certainly there is a good
opportunity for buying cheaper products. Most goods are bought in large volumes and factories in
poorer countries are compelled to offer cheaper prices to keep their factories running with that kind
of bulk buying. DG does not require a factory to be Audited and certified for quality standards and
social compliance. Their products are sourced from the lowest priced, low standard small factories
based in rural areas that usually employ child labour. These factories are able to produce cheap items
because they do not have to add additional costs of being a compliant factory. This results in cheaper
items coming to their shelves and being passed onto an unsuspecting customer. Their introduction
does not reflect their mission statement for the above given reasons in terms of : Respect, a better
life for customers, superior returns for

doesn't seem to be permanent, as per the Investor Place contributor Dana Blankenhorn "Dollar

compelling arguments why, including the fact DG is more of a department store than a dollar store

Industry Analysis
Dollar General was founded in Scottsville, Kentucky in 1939 and was originally called J.L. Turner
and Son Wholesale, then Turner's Department Store, and then in 1955 it was converted to Dollar
General and did not sell any item over $1. Dollar General was the originator of the dollar store
concept and in 1968 it became a publicly traded company. "Dollar General is a Fortune 500®
company and the leader in the dollar store segment, with more than 8,000 stores and $9.2 billion in
fiscal 2006 sales" (www.dollargeneral.com). Dollar General is in the discount retail store industry
and focuses on cost leadership. Its direct competitors are Family Dollar Stores, Fred's Inc., and
Dollar Tree. In this industry, maintaining low costs are crucial to generating profits, since the
merchandise is already being sold at a discount and there is such high

The Case Involving Bmw And Dollar General
I have already talked about the case involving BMW and Dollar General, presenting Equal
Employment Opportunity Commission's revised guidance regarding usage of conviction records in
hiring decisions. And this shed some light on discussed issues, but in order to attain wide, broad
standpoint, other cases should be examined.
In their article Callier, Huss and Juengst present this controversial case revolving around the
problem of criminal records and hiring. Recently, University of Akron enacted the policy that
"would require blanket criminal background checks for all prospective UA employees, excluding
student employees." The mere fact that this policy was set should already interest and alert a
thoughtful reader; however, this is not the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I believe there two main interconnected problems: the issue of ethicality and legality. It is acceptable
to collect genetic DNA samples. To put it bluntly, is it okay to do so? The answer is no. Here is the
explanation why.
Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOP) insists that when it comes to issue of getting
genetic information, aim to discriminate is insignificant and it does not matter whether or not one
intended to discriminate. I agree that such practice is not right, especially from an ethical standpoint.
But it seems wrong even from legal viewpoint. The commission argues "An employer who asks for
information and then acquires genetic information as a result of that request, runs in violation of
GINA". Therefore, it is unlawful thing to do. This is legal issue. What about ethical side?
Although I grant that there is no obligation that an employer receives an information to discriminate
or there is no such a rule that the employer obtains information to have genetic information, I still
maintain that this is not right thing to do, because it may entail amplification of discrimination.
EEOP supports my disagreement: "the fact that they're acquiring genetic information to begin with
violates the rule itself". Again, it is confirmed that University's policy go against GINA and now
ethical aspect is present. The problem here is that by collecting DNA samples, University of Akron
creates basis for

This is important because it gives them price differentiation. Dollar General and Family Dollar
prices vary according to the product. Similarly, Wal–Mart conveniently operates with low prices to
cater its demographic, but it cannot operate in as many locations. . "If a firm has lower costs than its
rivals, other things being equal, it will outperform them" (Satterwhite, 2006).
Logically, Dollar Tree business model enriches the customer experience. Its stores are strategically
located near low income neighborhood and are conveniently open to cater its customers.
Competitors such as Dollar General and Family Dollar have similar stores, but they do not have
price differentiation and market power.
Nonetheless, Dollar Tree acknowledges its market power; its competitors, Wal–Mart, Dollar
General, and Family Dollar have an uphill battle to reach Dollar Tree business model. Moreover,
Dollar Tree product differentiation gives them an additional leverage over their competitors. As
mention earlier, Dollar Tree sells its entire product for $1 or less. They accomplish this by
purchasing a variety of products from private vendors at wholesale prices. In contrast, its
competitors purchase brand name products at higher prices, thus making it difficult to compete with
Dollar Tree prices. These are the way Dollar Tree utilized to map, scan,

Dollar General Industry and Competitive Analysis
Dollar General Industry and Competitive Analysis
INDUSTRY
The first step to understanding a company is to examine its industry. There are four main areas to
consider when analyzing an industry. These include:
• Competitors
There are several different types of stores within the discount retail industry, and for comparison's
sake, the industry is further broken into many segments. DG is in the market segment known as the
dollar store category. As a result, competitors such as Wal–Mart are in the same industry but not the
same peer group. Comparisons will be made throughout this report to Wal–Mart and other big firms
because they tend draw some of the same customers.
• Customers
Retail merchandise stores attract many different ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is not sustainable due to:
• rivals' similar competitive strategies
• low barriers of entry into the market
• the absence of a differentiation strategy
When examining competitive advantage, it is also important to consider the market and take into
account the existing competition against larger firms.
Small firms often find it difficult to compete with larger firms. Though there are some disadvantages
DG will never be able to overcome due to its size, small firms have advantages over their larger
counterparts.
Advantages
• convenience
• absence of long lines
• customer service
Disadvantages
• low purchasing power
• smaller pool of resources to allocate
• less extensive market
Improving the store internally with more resourceful employees, better lighting and displays, and
more organized floor plans will start to change the image of Dollar General that the average public
holds. A more respectable store will lead to an increase in customers. Dollar General will then begin
developing a system of a more sustainable competitive advantage among the small and large firms
of the similar industry.
DG has a current competitive advantage within its industry that is maintains through a unique cost–
efficient approach. This low–cost structure is apparent through low inventories, low advertising
costs, and location of stores in rural areas. Though profitable in the short–run, DG's current
advantage is not

U.s. Dollar Generals ( Dgs )
Views from the DG Dollar Generals (DGs) are popping up left and right. DGs are now in our
backwards challenging all of our local businesses. Working at the DGs is not a hard job once the
store is stocked and ready for business. I used to see DGs as where "sorry people" worked because
overtime, people get lazy and let the DGs go and make it look almost impossible to get it back
looking nice again. But that was until my buddies and I started working at the new DG in Ino. We
are all there to make money to have for gas, keep girlfriends happy (which seems almost impossible
to do), and other expenses. We are determined to keep our DG up and running great with no dirty
isles, no items stuck behind others, and no rude employees. Dollar General is the place to shop
because it has a good trained staff, a friendly–clean environment, and cheaper products to bring in
more business. A store's staff is like columns, holding up the stores foundation from mayhem. To be
part of a staff anywhere you have to be determined for whatever before you walk into the doors of
that particular business to work for. If you have a store with employees working for you and they are
not trained, they won't have a clue what tasks they are there to complete. Trained employees is a key
to success in a business. The manager of the DG is in control of hiring workers who she sees will be
a good worker for the business. It's not hard to comprehend the basic needs of a good employee. A

Be that as it may, developing an ideal healthcare system will call for requisite transformational
changes in authenticating the ideological construct of both the primary care and primary medical. In
view of the previous studies and comments posted by profound scholars in the nursing mainstream,
primary care and primary medical has been in the forefront in championing for transformational
changes towards ensuring capacity building and boosting the lifestyle of the humanity. In a strong

Hence, restructuring the primary care and primary medical would enhance quality of the services

Walmart is the largest retailer in the world and is the second largest retailer, behind Amazon, in the
United States. The majority of households in America shop at Walmart on a regular basis. However,
Dollar General and Family Dollar have increasingly gained market–share over the years. Both stores
are considered extreme value retailers. By definition, extreme value retailers are small, full–line
discount stores that offer a limited merchandise assortment at very low prices.

Dollar General and Family Dollar stores are typically much smaller than other discount retailers like
Walmart and Kmart, averaging 6,000 to 8,000 square feet in size. This allows the retailers to easily
find good locations in almost any market they choose to enter. Most of their stores are located in
small towns in the Southeast where the companies are headquartered. However, more recently they
are opening stores in suburban area strip shopping centers in retail spaces abandoned by drugstores
that have moved to stand–alone locations. In the past, Dollar General and Family Dollar stores were
typically only found in low–income communities or in areas that were too small to support a large
discount store like Walmart or Kmart. The residents of these communities appreciated the
convenience they offered.
While both retailers still advertise using sales circulars, they have reduced their overall advertising
expenses in recent years. This has allowed both companies to make significant money–saving
investments in point–of–sale terminals, store–level inventory tracking systems, automated
distribution centers, space allocation software and replenishment systems to reduce stockouts and
increase inventory turnover.

In many states and towns across the United States Dollar General is a household name. The first
Dollar General store opened in Springfield, Ky. on June 1, 1955, as a wholesale business in

Dollar General Store: Business Analysis
When discussing business with friends and family, the knowledge expressed concerning how
businesses succeed can be surprising. People are often on the outside looking in and do not realize
how practices have changed over the years. From the 1960's, businesses have begun to analyze
competition in markets, strategic leadership, along with the social responsibility of the corporation
(Guerras–Martin, Madhok, & Montoro–Sanchez, 2014). In addition, the incorporation of web–sites
and computer interaction has also greatly influenced business practices. Strategic management can
be described as the actions demonstrated by top management to evaluate internal and external
environments of an organization in order to set goals and oversee them (Parnell, 2008). Businesses
of today must exemplify the ability to be competitive in addition to realizing inner strengths and
weaknesses. In addition, this writer would continue the conversation, describing the importance of a

Based on what I learned I agree that shopping malls should adapt to the ecommerce sector. It's much
easier for customers to press the buy button on their phones or anywhere. I think that shopping malls

Dollar General Industry Analysis
MEMORANDUM To: From: Date: Re: Dollar General Industry Analysis Executive Summary:
Dollar General is the sixth largest mass merchandiser, and the fourth largest discount store in the
U.S. However, significant growth opportunities remain for extreme–value retailers such as Dollar
General. Dollar General's strategic objective is sustainable and profitable long–term growth. The
company has opportunities for growth by expanding in the United States to areas that lack an
extreme–value retail presence. Continuing to serve low–, middle–, and fixed–income families in
small communities will prevent Dollar General from competing directly against mass retailers such
as Wal–Mart and Target. Dollar General's strength ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The dollar store industry caters to low–, middle–, and fixed–income buyers who are price sensitive.
Regarding consumables, buyers are looking for the best bargain for an item that they will need to
purchase again in the near future. The high threat of customer buying power drives profitability
down. In contrast to buyer power, supplier power is low. This is due to the large number of suppliers
that offer price–competitive, undifferentiated products. Suppliers must rely on the retail industry to
sell their product, so forward integration is unlikely. The low threat of supplier power increases
profitability. The threat of substitutes is medium. Since extreme–value retailers offer a focused
assortment of goods in a small–box format, mass retailers such as Wal–Mart and Target are
substitutes rather than competitors. On one hand, mass retailers have a larger assortment of branded
goods, economies of scale, and are highly price competitive with extreme–value retailers. On the
other hand, extreme–value retailers are more convenient due to the small–box format, allowing a
customer to get in and out quickly. The products being sold are undifferentiated so price–
performance tradeoff is low. The threat of new entrants into the industry is medium. There are areas
of the U.S. with no extreme–retail presence, making it easier for a new entrant to open and capture
market share. On the demand side,

Dollar General Corporation is a premier low–cost retailer organization in the United States. It is

American manufacturers. One of the Dollar General's main objectives is to create an atmosphere

(Dollar General Corporation Analysis, 2014). As a large corporation, this places Dollar General in
an exceptional position to contribute to the environment and provide a significant influence on
customers by offering environmentally safe and friendly product selections to encourage a green
environment. An aggressive recycling program is in place to avert waste from going to landfills at
substantial levels. The collection and processing of cardboard waste alone for recycling saves an
estimated equivalency of nearly 2.4 million forest trees a year (Dollar General Corporation, 2014).
Outdated computer processors, worn store equipment, and consumable paper and plastic are also
among the many recyclable by–products Dollar General keeps out of landfills with its forward
leaning recycling programs. Also Dollar General's choice to implement the use of energy efficient
lighting systems and programmed central air/heat pumps conserves energy as well as keep operating
cost low for greater profits for stakeholders and low cost savings for customers (Dollar General
Corporation, 2014). Furthermore, shoppers are engaged routinely on environmental awareness and

Relevant Economic Trends With the exception of supercenters such as Costco and BJ's, the fastest–
growing portion of the overall retail industry in the United States during the past decade has been in
the dollar store segment. From 2000–2005 dollar stores had a compound annual growth rate
(CAGR) of 10.2% which was nearly double the 5.6% CAGR in the retail industry as a whole. Sales
from these discount stores were $24.7 billion in 2000 and were expected to more than double to
$51.1 billion in 2009 (Exhibit 8). Two main drivers fueled this growth trend. The first was a cultural
shift in consumers towards a bargain–based mentality. This was spurred by an increased presence of
retailers with a low cost strategy including Wal–Mart, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They emphasize the use of even–dollar prices on most items to conveniently make it easy for
customers to track how much they are spending before they get to the checkout line. This coupled
with their focused assortment of quality goods allows easy in and out shopping and saves the
customer time. DG competes against big–box retailers such as Wal–Mart through price and
convenience rather than price and selection. The average DG store is 6,900 square feet with about
4,900 stock–keeping units (SKUs) serving customers who live within five miles of the store. The
average Wal–Mart on the other hand is over 100,000 square feet containing more than 75,000 SKUs
and serves many customers living more than five miles away. Strategically limiting the number of
brands and sizes as well as purchasing fast–turning SKUs gives DG the leverage to negotiate low
purchase prices when bargaining with suppliers based on the higher volume of individual SKUs
being purchased. This allows them to offer competitive prices while achieving price parity with big–
box retailers selling the same items and on occasion even beating these competitor's prices.
Focusing on both price and convenience also allows DG to compete and differentiate themselves
from other small convenience, discount, and drugstore retailers who typically focus on either price
or convenience but

Dollar General: Exploring Color Red In China
For 69¢ at Dollar General, I was able to buy the large red poster board. Why did I choose red, you

happiness.
Luck is a very important quality that people must have in China. During Chinese New Year for
instance, the color red is scattered all over the place, whether by red small envelopes or red floating

Dollar General Case Analysis
Intuitively one might assume that Dollar General, the well–known extreme–value retailer, has an
established competitive advantage versus other consumer goods retailers with respect to price. It
would then follow that cost would be a defining characteristic of the company, and a cost analysis an
appropriate analytical tool. However, the four distinct types of retailers within the dollar store retail
segment (original dollar stores, close–out retailers, limited assortment grocers, and extreme–value
retailers) all compete on price. Dollar General is very competitive in this regard, but this alone has
not rendered the company successful; price is not Dollar General's competitive advantage amongst

I would suggest the company to carry out the following actions. First, the company should seek
limited expansion within the continental United States (US extreme–value industry still growing at
$1.5 billion/year), namely into California. However, expansion should be limited to this state only.
Whereas development within the US had been the company's growth engine for years, the company
is now closing and remodeling stores with equal returns. As such, the company's growth aims should
be moved abroad (Europe), where extreme–value markets are well received, and stores with limited
SKU's fair better than larger discount outlets. Secondly, store merchandise productivity could be
enhanced by eliminating seasonal items (costumes, summer toys) and adding more strategic grocery
items. Research suggests that same–store growth could be spurred by a heavier emphasis on fresh
grocery items, and Dollar General appears to have the delivery capabilities to keep a fair supply of
perishables on hand. A slightly larger store size for new shops might be necessary for this sort of
development, as Dollar General seems to have slightly underestimated the 'sweet–spot' for its store
size with the current store model. The stores would remain small enough to facilitate accelerated
shopping, but large enough to hold a proper number of SKU's, still in the

Dollar General Strategies
Two important strategy concepts that need to be implemented for successful marketing within a
business are market segmentation and a generic marketing strategy. Market segmentation is defined
by Mullins & Walker, Jr. (2010), as the process by which a market is divided into distinct
subsets of customers with similar needs and characteristics that lead them to respond in similar ways
to a particular product offering and marketing program (p.180). Generic market strategy is based on

Customers
The customers of Dollar General come in all ages and both sexes, but the majority entering

customers at this facility is from low–, middle, and fixed incomes. This was determined from
observation and knowledge of the people entering the store. Most of the customers observed lived

There can be a number of reasons for a company to go public or private. There are benefits, as well
as disadvantages that go along with either course of action (Exhibit 1 for details). When firms decide
to go private, they are no longer listed on any stock exchange market. The pressure of keeping
accounting regularity and reporting to the public is no longer an issue. Instead, firms can be more
flexible to reorganize the business profile as well as the management team. In many cases,
shareholders and board members receive very rewarding financial benefits from this transaction.
However, in some situations, public firms do not have a choice in the matter, as is the case in a

This analysis contains references to years 2010 and 2009 for Dollar General Corporation, which
represent fiscal years ended January 28, 2011 and January 29, 2010 respectively. The main issues
which the company is concerned about are its ability to increase sales and profitability and reduce

ROA was 3.8%, so ROA increased between 2009 and 2010 fiscal years. Profit Margin for ROA is

Dollar General (NYSE: DG) is a public company is an American chain of variety stores and they are
headquartered out of Goodlettsville, Tennessee. They offer name brand and generic items. Some
history about Dollar General is that they were founded in Scottsville, Kentucky by the company J.L.

more than one dollar. The idea became a success, and other stores owned by J.L. Turner and his son
Cal Turner were quickly converted. By 1957, annual sales of Dollar General's 29 stores were $5

This project helped their company grow tremendously and their numbers can show it. Dollar
General is committed to four key operating priorities: 1) driving productive sales growth, 2)
increasing gross margin, 3) leveraging process improvements and information technology to reduce
costs and 4) expanding our culture to serve others. In 2011, they recorded record sales, operating
profit, net income, and cash flows from operations (Dollar General, 2012). Looking at the analysis
and their overall numbers, Dollar General had a great year and I believe this is from their 2011
expansion plan. Their net sales was up to $14.8 B in 2011 from $13 B in 2010. They had a same–
store sales growth of 6% in 2011 from 4.9% in 2010. Their ending store count in 2011 ended up at
9,937 compared to what they had in 2010 with 9,372 stores. They actually surpassed their goal of
550 stores with adding an extra 15 stores. Another fact is they had a sales per square feet at $213
compared to 2010 which was $201 (Dollar General, 2012). For the actual results, I believe that they
accomplished their 2011 expansion project. They set their goals of adding more stores, which they
even made extra stores, renovating those older stores that needed work and they added employees.
Enduring all these costs, Dollar General made a profit from this whole project and I believe it will
help towards their future plans. Dollar General is a great example if someone or an organization is
trying to expand their business. Dollar General molded the steps it takes to implement the process,
put the right programs in place, view the budget and make sure they are within their budget, take the

below provided by ScienceDirect (Quansheng, 2015), shows how inventory replenishment
effectiveness rates impact retailer's cost. I think that Dollar General is experiencing a destroyed rate,
as shown on the chart as the top line. Which is leading them to suffer a large impact on their internal
costs. They have flooded their stores with inventory and continue to each week when stacks of
inventory from the last shipment haven't even been up ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Not once did I use any type of handheld device and scan inventory before or while putting it away.
They should incorporate a whole inventory system at each store using RFID tags, barcodes, and
handheld scanners. Dollar General could start by including RFID tags on the shipping trolleys and
containers. ScienceDirect states (Quansheng, 2015), RFID technologies provide a real–time
communication with numerous objects, reported after using RFID tags, Procter & Gamble and Wal–
Mart reduced inventory levels by 70%, and improved service levels from 96% to

Family Dollar and Dollar General Essays
Family Dollar was established in Charlotte, North Carolina in 1959 by a 21 year old entrepreneur
named Leon Levine. He was interested in operating a low–overhead, self–service retail store.
Levine's main goal was to offer a variety of high quality merchandise to customers for under $2.00
(Family Dollar: History). If everything in the store wasn't a dollar to begin with why did he name
the store Family DOLLAR? The fact is that any person can be influenced in a different way just by
the way someone words a sentence or phrase. A prime example of this is a Family Dollar store. The
problem is that Family Dollar doesn't sale everything in their store for a dollar, like a Dollar Tree
does. Dollar Tree is seen to be one of the very few true ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The usage of words in the title of a store could cause customers to go into a state thinking that
something is possible but it is not. Most stores lean towards the usage of cognitive grammar to bait
their customers in to make a business. A prime example of cognitive grammar is Family Dollar,
which would make customers think that everything in the store is a dollar. Cognitive grammar is
used to make people think what you want them to think. If a person says, "Don't think of a nice car",
what are you going to think about? Everyone is going to think about different types of nice cars,
even though the person said not to.
Dollar General and Family Dollar are not what they claim to be in the view of their customers. As
for some items in Dollar General and Family Dollar are seen to be marked up more compared to the
same item of better quality at a Walmart Store. If the items bought at a "dollar" store are a dollar
there is more likely of a chance that the item will be of low value in the first place, but not all the
time. In the true dollar stores like Dollar Tree, there are a lot of "here and there" items that are very
well worth a dollar to many people, others not so good of a deal. The same "here and there" items at
a Family Dollar or Dollar General are usually known to not be a dollar, but the items are still sold to
customers that

Dollar General (A)

  • 1. Dollar General (A) 9–607–140 REV: APRIL 28, 2009 WILLY SHIH STEPHEN KAUFMAN REBECCA MCKILLICAN Dollar General (A) Ironically, small–box retailers like Dollar General owe their growth to the success of our big–box rivals. The dominance of big–box retail fuels the demand for a convenient alternative. – David Perdue, Chairman and CEO, Dollar General Walking through the home cleaning aisle of a Dollar General store in Nashville, Tennessee, David Perdue, CEO of Dollar General, reflected on the significant progress the dollar store industry, and Dollar General in particular, had made in the United States over the past decade. Many consumers in the U.S. still believed that the large dollar store retailers focused on low–priced knick–knacks. In 2007, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Retail in the United States The dollar store concept originated with the five–and–dime model pioneered by Woolworth's, which was founded in 1878 in Utica, New York. Other five–and–dime pioneers included W.T. Grant, J.J. Newbury's, McCory's, Kresge, McClellan's, and Ben Franklin stores. These stores were usually situated in the downtown area of cities and towns throughout the United States and offered merchandise at two price points: a nickel or a dime. Inflation eventually took its toll, and stores were no longer able to sell any items for five or ten cents, so they became known as "variety stores." Given 2 Dollar General (A) 607–140 that $0.05 in 1913, adjusted for inflation, was $1.01 in 2006 dollars, the five–and–dime retailing concept had shown remarkable strength over the years.3 Woolworth's ... • 3. Walmart, Dollar General, And Family Dollar From my own experience, the three companies that could learn lessons from this case study are Walmart, Dollar General, and Family Dollar. To me, these three companies could all use a lot of help when it comes to product placement and meeting their customer needs (O'Brien & Marakas, 2011, p. 419–420). This brings me to the lessons to be learned from this case study. The use of the simulation technology of the virtual store environments is a brilliant concept. It is fast becoming a common practice among consumer product manufacturers and retailers (Breen, 2017). It is faster and more cost efficient than the traditional in–store product testing. It also allows a company to get a more accurate feel of the total shopping experience, just as if they were the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If I owned those stores and I walked in them and took a look around, I would fire every district manager I had for letting the employees get away with the mess those stores stay in. I would not fire the store employees because I would have to shut all of the stores down. However, the district managers should have been making them do their jobs. I have never in my life seen such a mess. The store organization is awful, you do not have to worry about product placement because it is usually on the floor or still in the boxes or who knows where. The executives of that company really could learn a lot from the store simulators I believe. I personally do not know how some of their stores keep their doors open. We have one in particular here in Lexington, that should have shut its doors years ago. They never have enough help, there is never anything on the shelves, and the store is always nasty. If the executives of these two companies could open the doors to the store simulator built by the Kimberly–Clark Corp I Truly believe they would make many changes in management within their ... Dollar General Dollar General (DG): Brand of Choice for Low–Income Households / Dollar General (DG) and the Bifurcation of American Households Low–end retailers serve an important function in American society. Having been around for as long as people have lived in cities, low–end retailers provide an affordable option for cash–strapped consumers looking to make ends meet. Today, low–end retail is a highly competitive, multi–billion dollar industry that is serving the needs of low–income households across the United States. Dollar General (DG) is America's largest low–end retailer. Founded in 1939 and headquartered in Goodlettsville, Tennessee, Dollar General operates over 11,000 stores in 40 US states. The company's size has given it numerous competitive advantages, including the ability to offer a large selection of name brand and off–brand goods. The company will play a bigger role in the discount market, as it expands into new territory and adds to its existing in–store selection. America's economic recovery has generated mixed signals. On the one hand, US employers have added an average of 230,000 jobs per month in 2014, as the unemployment rate has fallen to a more than six–year low. On the other hand, overall wage growth has run stagnant and workforce participation is at multi–decade lows. This likely means demand for discount goods will remain steady for the foreseeable future as the economy returns to full–capacity. The company's ambitious plans for expansion reflect its good standing and high–growth potential. Earlier this year Dollar General announced plans to expand into three new US states. Expanding its operations into Rhode Island, Maine and Oregon would give the company presence in 43 states. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Dollar General Dollar General Case 1. Consider the $13.4 million of freight costs. What is the correct (GAAP) method of accounting for these? How did Dollar General in fact originally account for these costs? (Include in your answer a table of the effects on income in any years affected, both before and after tax, of the correct accounting and the accounting they originally used. The correct GAAP method to account for freight costs is as an expense of Cost of Goods Sold (COGS) that occur at the time services are performed and completed. This is a cost of conducting on–going operations (in–bound supplies, distribution and re–distribution). The freight costs should be expensed as occurred which will be at the time invoice is received and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Those findings as well as analysis on the company's financial statements formed the basis for our recommendations. We considered several alternative growth strategies for Dollar General to implement. Those strategies are, international expansion, continued domestic expansion, internal improvements, extending services, and taking the company private. We concluded that the most beneficial direction for the company is to go private thereby relieving pressure to meet short–term objectives. We also believe that Dollar General can ... Although these potential threats exist, Dollar General has an arsenal of potential opportunities for the future. Porters five forces Bargaining Power of Suppliers With 30% of Dollar General's inventory being made up from nationally known brands and the other 70% consisting of Private label brands, Dollar General does not face a large threat from the bargaining power of suppliers. While the national brands are on par, or sometimes below, big box stores such as Wal–Mart's prices. Dollar General's focus is supplying consumers with quality products at the lowest price possible. Since the majority of their products are created internally the power of supplies to control prices or production is very low. Bargaining Power of Consumers While there may be low bargaining power of suppliers, the bargaining power of consumers is extremely high. The rise of the Internet has led to an unprecedented transparency of prices within retail. It is now significantly easier to find the different prices offered at the various discount stores in the U.S. Thus in order to keep customers from the other 23,000 discount retailers in the united states, Dollar General must appease their customers at all costs in order to remain successful. I am one of the suppliers to them and as such, I would say that I have a fair knowledge into their business practices. Mission Statement Serving Others For Customers A Better Life For Shareholders A Superior Return For Employees Respect and Opportunity. About Dollar General Corporation Dollar General Corporation has been delivering value to shoppers for over 75 years. With more than 12,000 stores in 43 states, Dollar General is America's largest small–box discount retailer by sales. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Employees – Regular employees are not that well paid but they are Ok. Since most of their stores are located in rural areas, they are able to have employees for cheaper wages. 4. Respect – In a way, people in rural areas do not have the experience of buying higher quality products. Most of those Brands being sold by them are either lesser known ones or, specially made with discounted prices by cutting corners. For example– if I buy a 'Brut' Deodorant for a $ 1.00, it's quality wouldn't be the same as the one that I would buy from Maycees. Same goes with other products. In terms of Respect, they need to respect the intelligence of the customer. So, those Brands mentioned in their website is an eyewash and is of inferior quality. 5. Opportunity – Certainly there is a good opportunity for buying cheaper products. Most goods are bought in large volumes and factories in poorer countries are compelled to offer cheaper prices to keep their factories running with that kind of bulk buying. DG does not require a factory to be Audited and certified for quality standards and social compliance. Their products are sourced from the lowest priced, low standard small factories based in rural areas that usually employ child labour. These factories are able to produce cheap items because they do not have to add additional costs of being a compliant factory. This results in cheaper items coming to their shelves and being passed onto an unsuspecting customer. Their introduction does not reflect their mission statement for the above given reasons in terms of : Respect, a better life for customers, superior returns for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

For Dollar General the reason could be competitive retail environment contributing to slow down of growth. This doesn't seem to be permanent, as per the Investor Place contributor Dana Blankenhorn "Dollar General's stock was a bargain as a result of its double–digit decline in price. He makes some compelling arguments why, including the fact DG is more of a department store than a dollar store serving rural communities lacking in alternatives." In their article Callier, Huss and Juengst present this controversial case revolving around the problem of criminal records and hiring. I believe there two main interconnected problems: the issue of ethicality and legality. It is acceptable to collect genetic DNA samples. To put it bluntly, is it okay to do so? The answer is no. Here is the explanation why. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOP) insists that when it comes to issue of getting genetic information, aim to discriminate is insignificant and it does not matter whether or not one intended to discriminate. I agree that such practice is not right, especially from an ethical standpoint. But it seems wrong even from legal viewpoint. The commission argues "An employer who asks for information and then acquires genetic information as a result of that request, runs in violation of GINA". Therefore, it is unlawful thing to do. This is legal issue. What about ethical side? Although I grant that there is no obligation that an employer receives an information to discriminate or there is no such a rule that the employer obtains information to have genetic information, I still maintain that this is not right thing to do, because it may entail amplification of discrimination. EEOP supports my disagreement: "the fact that they're acquiring genetic information to begin with violates the rule itself". Again, it is confirmed that University's policy go against GINA and now ethical aspect is present. The problem here is that by collecting DNA samples, University of Akron creates basis for ... Regarding consumables, buyers are looking for the best bargain for an item that they will need to purchase again in the near future. This is due to the large number of suppliers that offer price–competitive, undifferentiated products. Suppliers must rely on the retail industry to sell their product, so forward integration is unlikely. The low threat of supplier power increases profitability. The threat of substitutes is medium. • 59. Dollar General Case Analysis Intuitively one might assume that Dollar General, the well–known extreme–value retailer, has an established competitive advantage versus other consumer goods retailers with respect to price. It would then follow that cost would be a defining characteristic of the company, and a cost analysis an appropriate analytical tool. However, the four distinct types of retailers within the dollar store retail segment (original dollar stores, close–out retailers, limited assortment grocers, and extreme–value retailers) all compete on price. Dollar General is very competitive in this regard, but this alone has not rendered the company successful; price is not Dollar General's competitive advantage amongst its competitors. Therefore, a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I would suggest the company to carry out the following actions. First, the company should seek limited expansion within the continental United States (US extreme–value industry still growing at $1.5 billion/year), namely into California. However, expansion should be limited to this state only. Whereas development within the US had been the company's growth engine for years, the company is now closing and remodeling stores with equal returns. As such, the company's growth aims should be moved abroad (Europe), where extreme–value markets are well received, and stores with limited SKU's fair better than larger discount outlets. Secondly, store merchandise productivity could be enhanced by eliminating seasonal items (costumes, summer toys) and adding more strategic grocery items. Research suggests that same–store growth could be spurred by a heavier emphasis on fresh grocery items, and Dollar General appears to have the delivery capabilities to keep a fair supply of perishables on hand. A slightly larger store size for new shops might be necessary for this sort of development, as Dollar General seems to have slightly underestimated the 'sweet–spot' for its store size with the current store model. The stores would remain small enough to facilitate accelerated shopping, but large enough to hold a proper number of SKU's, still in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 67. Dollar General Case Essay There can be a number of reasons for a company to go public or private. There are benefits, as well as disadvantages that go along with either course of action (Exhibit 1 for details). When firms decide to go private, they are no longer listed on any stock exchange market. The pressure of keeping accounting regularity and reporting to the public is no longer an issue. Instead, firms can be more flexible to reorganize the business profile as well as the management team. In many cases, shareholders and board members receive very rewarding financial benefits from this transaction. However, in some situations, public firms do not have a choice in the matter, as is the case in a "hostile takeover". In assessing Dollar General's performance, ... For 2009 ROA was 3.8%, so ROA increased between 2009 and 2010 fiscal years. Profit Margin for ROA is 4.8% for 2010 and for 2009 is 2.9%. We can see an increase ... Dollar General has a high long–term liquidity risk. Interest coverage Ratio for 2010 is 3.6 and for 2009 is 1.6. In conclusion, financial statements of Dollar General present the increase in company's profitability and sales over the last two years, they reduced their expenses as well. The only information that the statements do not disclose is which brands of merchandise increased their sales, and what was the cost of goods sold compared to the profit they made. Since the company was concerned about promotion of their private brand it would be helpful to know what percent of sales does their private brand make comparison to other brands. Nevertheless, the long–term liquidity risk does not look as safe. They stuck to the idea that their items that they were selling were going to be no more than one dollar. The idea became a success, and other stores owned by J.L. Turner and his son Cal Turner were quickly converted. By 1957, annual sales of Dollar General's 29 stores were $5 million. The Turners did not reach this level of success without obstacles. This project helped their company grow tremendously and their numbers can show it. Dollar General is committed to four key operating priorities: 1) driving productive sales growth, 2) increasing gross margin, 3) leveraging process improvements and information technology to reduce costs and 4) expanding our culture to serve others. In 2011, they recorded record sales, operating profit, net income, and cash flows from operations (Dollar General, 2012). Looking at the analysis and their overall numbers, Dollar General had a great year and I believe this is from their 2011 expansion plan. Their net sales was up to $14.8 B in 2011 from $13 B in 2010. They had a same– store sales growth of 6% in 2011 from 4.9% in 2010. Their ending store count in 2011 ended up at 9,937 compared to what they had in 2010 with 9,372 stores. They actually surpassed their goal of 550 stores with adding an extra 15 stores. Another fact is they had a sales per square feet at $213 compared to 2010 which was $201 (Dollar General, 2012). For the actual results, I believe that they accomplished their 2011 expansion project. They set their goals of adding more stores, which they even made extra stores, renovating those older stores that needed work and they added employees. Enduring all these costs, Dollar General made a profit from this whole project and I believe it will help towards their future plans. Dollar General is a great example if someone or an organization is trying to expand their business. Dollar General molded the steps it takes to implement the process, put the right programs in place, view the budget and make sure they are within their budget, take the necessary steps to make sure the whole procedure goes smoothly and evaluate their performance to make sure that they are keeping the company ... Dollar General, like most other companies send their stores inventory each week to replenish supply. But unlike some of those other companies after working for Dollar General I realized that the way they handled stock supply and inventory shipment wasn't very efficient compared to some of those other companies using inventory technologies. PROBELEM I feel as if that Dollar General has the right idea by keeping their stores well stocked with supplies but if customers can't even get around to "shop" the items due to those items blocking aisle then the purpose of the entire supply is pointless. After doing some research I discovered what I think is actually occurring at Dollar General stores when it comes to shipment of inventory. The line chart below provided by ScienceDirect (Quansheng, 2015), shows how inventory replenishment effectiveness rates impact retailer's cost. I think that Dollar General is experiencing a destroyed rate, as shown on the chart as the top line. Which is leading them to suffer a large impact on their internal costs. He was interested in operating a low–overhead, self–service retail store. Levine's main goal was to offer a variety of high quality merchandise to customers for under $2.00 (Family Dollar: History). If everything in the store wasn't a dollar to begin with why did he name the store Family DOLLAR? The fact is that any person can be influenced in a different way just by the way someone words a sentence or phrase. A prime example of this is a Family Dollar store. The problem is that Family Dollar doesn't sale everything in their store for a dollar, like a Dollar Tree does. Dollar Tree is seen to be one of the very few true ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The usage of words in the title of a store could cause customers to go into a state thinking that something is possible but it is not. Most stores lean towards the usage of cognitive grammar to bait their customers in to make a business. A prime example of cognitive grammar is Family Dollar, which would make customers think that everything in the store is a dollar. Cognitive grammar is used to make people think what you want them to think. If a person says, "Don't think of a nice car", what are you going to think about? Everyone is going to think about different types of nice cars, even though the person said not to. Dollar General and Family Dollar are not what they claim to be in the view of their customers. As for some items in Dollar General and Family Dollar are seen to be marked up more compared to the same item of better quality at a Walmart Store. If the items bought at a "dollar" store are a dollar there is more likely of a chance that the item will be of low value in the first place, but not all the time. In the true dollar stores like Dollar Tree, there are a lot of "here and there" items that are very well worth a dollar to many people, others not so good of a deal. The same "here and there" items at a Family Dollar or Dollar General are usually known to not be a dollar, but the items are still sold to customers that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
