The Old Guitarist And Madame X
What is art? Over the course of this class, the conclusion I have come to is that anything can be art if
someone believes it to be so. Art can be man–made, created from nature, or even something
imagined or felt through the senses, yet it is completely subjective to the viewer to decide if what
they see is classified as art. I often think of the phrase, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" during
class because art is not always beautiful, or even pleasant, but it is a personal perspective. The Old
Guitarist and Madame X are two creations that I believe are art, an opinion most people would agree
with solely based off the success and fame of the creators, Pablo Picasso and John Singer Sargent,
respectively. Being an artist is not always ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His works during this time were essentially monochromatic paintings in shades of blue and green,
though there were occasionally other colors as accents. These blue shades, prevalent in The Old
Guitarist, represented Picasso's severe depression as he drew into himself and kept isolated from the
rest of society. In contrast, Madame X was painted as a Realist portrait, as expected during the
Realism movement. However, the portrait also depicts clear influence of Impressionism in the
background as Sargent blurred colors to make the exact definitions of her form unknown, forcing
the viewer to feel the background rather than view it, and leave the space mysterious. Sargent was
attempting to capture, in his own words, her "unpaintable beauty and hopeless laziness" and created
a timeless painting. The stark contrast between the coloring and styles of these paintings make them
indelible to art history. With attention to not only the artists, but the works themselves, I do believe
The Old Guitarist and Madame X are both pieces of art. I believe them to be art because both pieces
had the intent to capture some type of emotion or moment in time. For Picasso, he was mourning the
death of his friend and painted the guitar as a symbol for immersing oneself in music, filling the
space around the solitary figure. Picasso perhaps believed

Analysis Of Madame X By John Singer Sargent
Introduction
This essay analyzes on the portrait of "Madame X" painted by John Singer Sargent as well as the
background of the artist himself. It analyzes on the physical, visual and aesthetics characteristics. In
addition, it argues on the controversial output given by critics of the time as well as analyzing and
comparing two interpretations of the portrait by art historians from the 19th century and the 20th
century.
Background of John Singer
John Singer Sargent (1884–1916) was the portrait artist for rulers and the upper class in both Europe
and the United States of America. He was considered the greatest painter of his era. In addition, he
was born abroad and an expatriate in his life; he loyally supported all things English, but never
renounced his American citizenship. Sargent's works reveal the individuality and personality of his
sitters. Sargent was one of the last great Realist artists of his time. Realism was a reaction against
Romanticism and sprung out of the toppling of the old order during the French Revolution. Realism
focused on the modern world instead of the historical, the truth instead of the varnished truth.
Sargent refused to embrace the modern styles that became popular towards the last decades of his
life, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She was known in Paris for her artful appearance. The artist hopes to enhance his reputation by
painting and exhibiting her portrait. Working without a commission but with his sitter's complicity.
The original version of the portrait by the artists daringly depicted his model with one of her jeweled
shoulder straps falling seductively, so that her dress appeared almost strapless (refer to Appendix 1).
However, due to the portrait receiving more ridicule than praise, Sargent repainted the shoulder strap
and kept the work for over thirty years (refer to Appendix

The Private Memoirs And Confessions Of A Justified Sinner
The history of gothic literature is a discussion of how the classic gothic literature has morphed into
today's contemporary gothic literature. From the beginning days of gothic writing one of the main
focuses has been on the issues that were relevant in the county or world at the time. Most people
think of gothic writings as a scary story of gloom and doom, but there are many aspects that
encompass a gothic writing. The true is that there are many elements to a gothic writing. The writer
does not need to use all of them at the same time, but to use some of them to make it a gothic
writing. As technology and the social atmosphere have evaluated writers have incorporated these
elements into their writing. Gothic literature is said to have ... Show more content on

(Ringel) Mary Snodgrass points out, "Decades before Sigmund Freud provided a paradigm for the
human psyche, echoes of disturbing behaviors forced readers of gothic literature to interpret subtexts
of prejudice, classism, and abnormality in thought and action: in the motivation for James Hogg's
The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner." (Snodgrass) Many people of authority
in America believed that the gothic genre was source of outside evil on the new world. This is
supported by Reverend Enos Hitchcock's Memoirs of the Bloomsgrove Family, in which he "blames
the corruption of young women in the new nation on "foreign writings and foreign manners" and
prays "May this rising empire cease to import both the one and the other!" (Ringel) The 1800's rang
in a new era of writers and twist on the gothic style. One of the major contributors was Edgar Allan
Poe with stories and poetry that still resonates with high schoolers to this day. Works that are still
read or at the very least spoken of in high school are stories by Nathaniel Hawthorne and Herman

Biography Of John Singer Sargent 's Life
John Singer Sargent began his life in Florence, Italy, on January 12th, 1856, and he grew up abroad,
as his parents became expatriates, leaving behind their home in Philadelphia to enjoy living and
travelling through Europe. It was because of this that Sargent's education was somewhat
unconventional, for his study was mostly informal, and this may have contributed to his singular
personality. Sargent's early exposure to European art and culture certainly had a profound effect on
him, and he was able to converse readily in French, German, and Italian through his travels. The
knowledge he gained through his life abroad proved to be quite helpful throughout his career, and
this exposure to such diversity would later become evident in his ... Show more content on

One of the best examples of Sargent's early style is his dramatic painting of 1882, El Jaleo, where
his emulation of Velázquez' use of light and color is especially apparent (Fig 1). Possibly the
painting in which Velázquez' influence is most obvious, however, is the painting The Daughters of
Edward Darley Boit of 1882 (Fig 2). Its candid arrangement, subjects, vast shadows, luminosity, and
muted colors bring to mind Velázquez' renowned painting Las Meninas (Fig. 3).
Although Sargent was creating and studying art during the 19th century art movement of
Impressionism, his art did not reflect this exposure, apart from some of his early works, and it is not
generally considered Impressionist; nevertheless, certain of his artistic elements do show that there
was some effect on his style from the artists of his time. One such characteristic of the Impressionist
movement is Sargent's compositional arrangements that are somewhat candid. Additionally, a
prominent feature of Sargent's art is his fascination with and masterful handling of light. Light was
one of the principles that was of greatest importance in Impressionist art, and their art was "in
reaction to the reflex of light, either real or imaginary." This definition of one of the aesthetic
principles of Impressionism truly encapsulates the work of Sargent, for, even in his earliest art, his
attention to light, its source – real or fairly

Analysis Of Madame X
Abstract Madame X, also known as the Portrait of Madame X, is a famous painting made by John
Singer Sargent in the year 1884. A popular portrait too many, due to her mystery and anonymous
state, was once a highly controversial piece to many. As soon as John released this painting in "The
Salon", one of the most popular art exhibits, the painting was greatly criticized due to the model
seeming to be "flaunting" and over–conceited. Despite the initial negativity from the French crowd,
"Madame X" would soon become one of the most popular portraits in history. Now sitting in the
"Metropolitan Museum of Art" in New York, this portrait has gained much praise and appreciation
from many art lovers around the world who find beauty in her mysterious figure.

Madame X – who is she?
When John had made this piece, he titled it "Madame X" to leave the viewers with a sense of
mystery and dramatization. Many may wonder who this mysterious woman is, and what made her
stand out to John Sargent. This mysterious woman was soon discovered as Virginie Amélie Avegno
Gautreau, a young socialite who was known for her beauty. Born in New Orleans on January 29th,
1859, she was raised by her father Anatole Placide Avegno and her mother Marie Virginie de
Ternant, along with her younger sister Valentine. At eight years old, after the death of her father in

The First Painting Is About Spirituality
The first painting is about spirituality. Although it doesn't look like showing spirituality, it has
extended meanings. This painting was made by the artist whose name is Victor Brauner. He grew up
in Romania, and then he went to Pyrenees to take refuge from World War II. His father was a
wizard, and he learned some sorceries from his father. He put his own emotion in this painting. The
painting shows the prelude of a civilization of Indian people. It include 40 stylized animal
characters, and they are cartoon style. Indian is the basis pattern of this painting. In 1492, when
Columbus found new continent of North America, he found that there were hundreds of different
Indian tribes, and they all used different languages. Their natural life showing characteristics of a
harmony between human and nature. Almost half of the Indian tribes were disappeared now, and
more Indian began to migrate to another place to avoid diseases and killing. Therefore, Indian
people made a lot of great achievements in literature, architecture, sculpture, painting, embroidery,
calendar, pottery and other aspects. The impact of Indian on the American culture is profound. This
painting shows the rich and colorful side of their life.
The second painting is about work. It shows the Wall Street in the last century. At that day there was
a meeting between the politicians and the businessmen. President Franklin D. Roosevelt was

A Painting That I Observed From The Norton. Simon Museum
I. Norton Simon Museum
II. Introduction A. This research paper will be analyzed of a painting that I observed from the
Norton Simon Museum. It's the painting of Alcibiades on His Knees Before His Mistress, by Louis
Jean Francois Lagrenee. The reason I chose this painting is because for me it was different from all
other paintings I viewed in the museum. To me it was different because it depicts an image of
masculinity as power, and at the same time femininity as inability and hopelessness. In this research
paper I will be analyzing the purpose, context such as race and gender, and the history of the
painting. In addition, I will be comparing this painting with a different painting that it's similar with
its historical context from the "Exploring Art" textbook on the chapter "Race, Gender, Clan, And
Class".

painted in French, around 1725–1805) by Louis Jean Francois Lagrenee. In this painting the artist is
depicting a soldier, who is sitting on his one knee and bending towards a woman, who is sitting on a

I Am Madame X By Gioia Diliberto
I Am Madame X by Gioia Diliberto a novel of historical fiction, based loosely on the life of Virginie
Amelie Avegno Gautreau, otherwise known as "Madame X," the infamous society matron and
subject of Sargent's sexually–charged 1884 Parisian Salon entry. In the novel Virginie and Pierre's
marriage is a portrayal of what love is not. There are cases of infidelity, which seems common in
most marriages. What seems like love is only mere infatuation. People in this society focus more on
beauty and how being with that person will make their reputation better, more so than the act of
falling in love. The role of marriage throughout the novel is used to empower as well as sexualize
women, which says a lot about their society. Written as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Roles of Women in France
French culture and society has evolved from many different aspects of French life. From the mastery
of French cuisine to the meaning of French art, the French have changed and evolved in many ways
to produce a specific modern culture, the dignified culture of the French. One thing that parallels the
progress and continuation of French culture is the role of women throughout France. Compared to
other nations, the role and rights of women in France were confronted earlier and Women's suffrage
was enacted earlier. The role of women in France, because of the early change in perception of
women, enabled France to develop faster and with less conflict than other competing nations.
Missing from the painting is Marat's murderer, Charlotte Corday. Corday was a tall, attractive and
articulate 25–year–old who decided to travel all the way from Normandy to Paris in order to strike
an important political blow. A very big supporter of the moderate Girondin Party, Corday blamed
Marat for the Terror consuming the French Revolution, as faction warred against faction. While
modeling herself after the heroes of antiquity whom she studied in Plutarch, she had planned to
murder Jean Marat, like Julius Caesar, publically at the National Convention floor. But, when illness
forced Marat to the confines of his bathtub due to his skin condition, Corday tracked him down to
his apartment and won a private audience. This type of bravery and commitment to stopping the
terror would most likely to be

Pierre–Auguste Renoir was born in 1841 to Marguerite Merlet and Léonard Renoir. In 1844 his
family moved to Paris and by 1854, at the young age of thirteen, began painting flowers on
porcelain cups and saucers. Through his parents, he began as a painter for the porcelain industry; his
parents felt this was the perfect start for the beginnings of an artist. He came from the town of
Limoges, where porcelain became almost a symbol of status and wealth. By 1860 he had left the
porcelain factory in favor of becoming a full time painter; he was granted permission to copy
paintings in the Lourve where he began to admire the eighteenth century masters. In 1862 he entered

Impressionist art brought with it a characteristic and long–lasting originality and approachability
that, until now, was never found in the art of earlier periods. The interests of these painters seem to
be relevant to our own and function humbly by exciting our visual contentment. The term
"impressionism" itself entails a great assemblage of extraordinary painters who have changed the
artistic world, as we know it.
The term impressionism has often been mistaken as a definition for every impressionist painter.
Generally, terms of artistic movements tend to attempt to "...encompass the complexities and shifts
of the diverse artists who exhibited under its banner." Many of the artists within the group opposed
the term and instead preferred the name "Independents", while few even considered themselves
members of other movements (Edgar Degas often considered himself a "Realist"). Despite this
confliction, every impressionist painter shared a similar dedication to painting contemporary
subjects in an informal style. In the face of this commitment impressionists still were divided into
two principle camps. Led by Claude Monet and including Camille Pissarro, Alfred Sisley and
sometimes Pierre–Auguste Renoir, the "Pure" Impressionists painted out–of–doors, recording their
impulsive reactions to light and atmosphere. The

19th Century Gender Roles
Gender roles and stereotypes are nothing new in human society and can be traced back to the
earliest known human civilizations like the Aztecs and the Mayans where men and women
preformed specific tasks in order for their societies to thrive and flourish. Men and women equally
farmed and took care of the family, both fulfilling the role as provider and nurturer (Robin 409). So
there is a bit of confusion as to how somewhere down the line, 19th century civilizations diverged so
far away from the original gender roles laid out by our ancestors. The industrial revolution caused a
dramatic differentiation in the gender roles of men and women, particularly in the upper and middle
class societies (Gonäs 92). During this time men and women were thought to have had completely
different biological natures which people saw as meaning different roles in society. ... Show more

Women were seen as weak, dependent, and illogical. Men were pictured to have natural role best
suited to the public world, and women were seen has be best suited for the private world. Women
who exhibited traits or desires that challenges these views were seen as "improper" and often
ostracized and cast out for defying societies beliefs. The history of gender in Europe in the 19th
century can be summed up as as "an overarching patriarchal model which reserved power and
privilege for men" as said by Jan Marsh in her article "Gender Ideology & Separate Spheres in the
19th Century." This was a time of "the great man" where outstanding male individuals were rising to
immense power in all aspects of life and were being depicted in all forms of media around the globe.
Women were nothing more than a stage hand in comparison to men who were the main event on
stage at the time. John Singer Sargent was one of many artistic liberals who set out to challenge, and

Role Of Art In The Gilded Age
The American Role of Art
The Gilded Age, named after the novel written by Mark Twain, describes a time full of social issues
in the United States. After the Civil War, America was a powerhouse in industrialization. Due to the
rapid economic development – the rich got richer and the poor got, well they got poorer. The Gilded
Age depicts the huge financial, social, and political changes that the United States had undergone
from the ladder part of the nineteenth century up until World War I.
Art in the United States became somewhat of a necessity during this time; the wealthy sought to fill
their home with the finer things. The painters of this time aimed to glorify the reality of the subjects;
focusing on elegant lines and colors. John Singer Sargent was one of the most pursued artists, well–
known for his portraits. Madame X brought Sargent to fame. Although first considered to be too
provocative; a beautiful woman in a figure fitting dress with a plunging neckline – it became a high
demand piece. Jules Guerin, a muralist known for his work in the Lincoln Memorial, depicting the

diversity of his works. What I am least looking forward to is trying to find one work of art that really

Comparison Of Le Bain And Madame X
A clear similarity between 'Le Bain' and 'Madame X' is how each artist pushed boundaries for their
times. Both of these paintings were done in the 19th Century, but are around twenty years apart. The
way these paintings push boundaries is in how they show modernism and truth, like Balzac
discusses in the reading in creating a masterpiece. One is able to see in Le Bain the nude woman
with her clothes spread on the ground, which resemble clothes modern women were wearing at the
time. At this point in time many believed it was appropriate for nudes to be in paintings if they
resembled a god or goddess. In this painting it is clear one is viewing neither a god nor goddess. As
we discussed in class the emperor felt this painting was immoral because

Although surfaces like linoleum, wooden panel, paper, slate, pressed wood, and cardboard have
been used, the most popular surface since the 16th century has been canvas, although many artists
used panel through the 17th century and beyond. Panel is more expensive, heavier, harder to
transport, and prone to warp or split in poor conditions. For fine detail, however, the absolute
solidity of a wooden panel gives an advantage.
The artist might sketch an outline of their subject prior to applying pigment to the surface.
"Pigment" may be any number of natural substances with color, such as sulphur for yellow or cobalt
for blue. The pigment is mixed with oil, usually linseed oil but other oils may be used as well. The
various oils dry differently, creating assorted effects.
Traditionally, artists mixed their own paints from raw pigments they often ground themselves and
medium. This made portability difficult and kept most painting activities confined to the studio. This
changed in the late 1800s, when oil paint in tubes became widely available. Artists could mix colors
quickly and easily, which enabled, for the first time, relatively convenient plein air (outdoor)
painting (a common approach in French Impressionism).
The artist most often uses a brush to apply the paint. Brushes are made from a variety of fibers to
create different effects.

Comparing Cassatt's Woman And Child Before A Washstand And...
Soltes (2011) discusses Cassatt's, Woman and Child before a Washstand and Bowl (1889) and
describes the tones of a delicate palate characteristic of Impressionist painting. He notes her
brushwork is tighter than typical Impressionism and is similar to that of Degas, assuming their close
relationship affected her artistic style as a painter. Her subject matter echoes the continuity of the
Madonna and Christ child yet in a modern humanized version of an actual mother and child. Soltes
(2011) regards Cassatt as: an important link between America and Europe because she is a
consummate painter in the Impressionist mode of her own particularized style; but because she was
well off enough to purchase Impressionist works and bring them back to the United States, which
helped further tighten the link between American appreciation of Impressionism and the
Impressionism being produced in France and in Europe in general" (L35, 22:28). Finally, John

each other with regard to pushing and pulling, into and out from, the picture plane. It contrasts those
ordered rectilinear blocks with a series of chaotic splotches that seem to shrink down in decreasing
size, all the way down to passages that are almost pointillist in feel. So we get from this visual
context, a kind of sense of landscape, which is reinforced by the fact that the dominating color along
the lower part is a kind of tawny sand–like color; and the dominating light blue above it, suggests
the shore of the sands and the sky, and then all of that green dominated material in between could be
taken to be vegetation that is growing on the edge of the sea, into the sky. (L40,

Today, the term is commonly used to describe a material used in pottery. The earliest recorded
ceramics were the result of various mixtures and base – combinations, including clay. The resultant
non–metallic and inorganic solid base is now a common sight in art ware and the domestic and
industrial segments of human development. The twentieth century witnessed the design of
amalgamated, new ceramic materials that are still used extensively in the manufacture of
semiconductors. Ceramic engineering, as we know it today, is advanced and involves state–of–the–
art processes. The material is inert and inorganic, with a crystalline oxide base. The resultant product
is always brittle, but strong in compression. Ceramic is able to withstand very high temperatures and
chemical erosion and survives well even in a strong caustic environment. Traditional raw materials
that go into manufacture of ceramic including kaolinite, silicon carbide, tungsten carbide and
aluminum oxide or alumina.
HISTORY OF CERAMICS Reflecting on the history of ceramics involves a clear understanding of
the two related branches, technology and aesthetics. Ceramics technology has developed
sophisticated material, over the years, for greater aesthetics. The initial hand–rolled coils took no
time to evolve into fuel efficient glazes that were developed in special kilns. The aesthetics of the
material developed parallel to the

The Gilded Age : The Gilded Age
The Gilded Age, which got from one of Mark Twain's books, The Gilded Age: A Taleof Today,
depicts a period in the United States with genuine social issues. Taking after the Civil War, the
United States hopped to the front of the world in industrialization. Because of America's monetary
development, the rich got wealthier and poor people, well got poorer. The Labor Movement was a
significant point amid this time, and most likely changed the way America works today. As
indicated by, today, the Gilded Age depicts the huge social, political and financial change that the
US experienced from the last third of the nineteenth century to World War I. The Gilded Age did not
just impetus industrialized power inside the United States, it additionally stamped basic in setting up
the New York Art world in the worldwide workmanship advertise(Kresser, 2013). American art got
to be to some degree a need amid the Gilded Age. Moguls frantically coveted to outfit their homes
with costly things, opening the entryway for specialists to convey what needs be. Painters portrayed
the glories and hardships of this new age, while essayists outlined life at its finest and nastiest. Be
that as it may, numerous specialists refuted to demonstrate the "urban life" of this time and
concentrated exclusively on the well–off. John Singer Sargent is an incredible case for this sort of
craftsmanship. He was by and large known for his extravagances picture works of art, for the most
part of ladies, for example, the Portrait of Madame X or Morning Walk. It was amid this period that
ladies turned out to be to a greater extent a point of convergence in craftsmanship. It didn't make a
difference whether dressed or exposed, living in agreeable insides.
Amid the 1920s, American craftsmen scanned for a more prominent significance inside society. The
nearness of Mexican muralists Diego Rivera and Jose Clemente Orozco in New York City, together
with the across the board lessons of Karl Marx and Vladimir Lenin, served as motivation to the
rising craftsmen. Later, with the waiting impacts of the Great Depression of 1929, President
Franklin Delano Roosevelt's Work Progress Administration (1933) furnished many battling
specialists with support, a feeling of

Francois Boucher's The Toilette Of Venus
Art is a medium for exploring a culture's characteristics during a specific time. Understanding an art
piece's content and historical significance can reveal key details about different civilizations.
Following the time period of the Renaissance, European artists experimented with styles to separate
their works from the prior time period. They strayed away from even lighting, stillness, and
symmetry to form a new artistic style that differed from the Renaissance. This type of style was
labeled the Baroque, a European aesthetic focused on movement, emotion, and drama. Francois
Boucher was a French artist from this time that embraced the rising Baroque style. In the 17th
century, the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture was created in France. ... Show more content

Art is able to evoke different feelings and emotions to each person that sets their eyes on it. The act
of 'looking' is simple, but a lot comes from it. Where the eyes are first drawn to, the duration that the
eyes are focused on a specific detail, and the thoughts that flood one's brain when viewing art is all
significant. These actions say more than the piece itself, it reveals emotions of both the artist and the
audience. Art can be expressed through infinite forms, but the underlying importance is not with the
art itself. It represents a place in time, displaying what was noteworthy to an individual in their own
life. It serves as a lasting creation representative of human imagination with the ability to bring out a
multitude of emotions from whoever views it. When art is created it represents the creativity of the
human mind compacted into a physical object. Art has little usage aside from pure observation, yet it
has prevailed throughout time, showing its importance to humanity. Art provides a lens into
humanity, showcasing the human ability over time. When studied through history, art is a view into
the development of humans and their interests. Through something as basic as commonly using
symmetry to transitioning to asymmetry, the European's perspective following the Renaissance is
revealed. The making of art is solely up to one individual and their creativity. It is the pinnacle of

Cassatt Vs Cassatte
The two painting use the same medium and are technically part of the same movement but
incorporate their own styles to their pieces which creates the contrast between the works visually.
The subject of the two works are different even though the models of the figures within both of the
pieces are known Cassatt's piece is very much meant to be focused on the action that's taking place,
hence the title The Cup of Tea, while Sargent's piece is very much meant to be a portrait painting
structured around the fact that it's a portrait of Madame Pierre Gautreau, hence the title Madame X.
In terms of composition both works contain a figure placed generally within the center of the piece.
The difference in composition would be that Mary Cassatt's piece ... Show more content on

Also remaining on the topic of the figures, Cassatt's figure is more conservatively dressed and seems
of a distinct class and taste while Sargent's figure is dressed in a slick tight sleeveless dress which
was the main source of controversy that surrounded this piece. In fact the original version of the
painting featured the right strap of the gown suggestively slipping off the shoulder and was later
repainted by Sargent in hopes to appease the critics and reverse some of the damage done by the
piece. The use of color is also what definitely sets these two works apart and gives them such
opposing vibes. Mary Cassatt's The Cup of Tea handles light and color a lot more vibrantly. The
color palate is light in value and showcases primarily pastel colors and warm colored skin while
Sargent's piece is darker in value with pale ghostly colored skin. In the peer reviewed article titled
Painting Skin it comments on the painting saying "Madame X's doubly painted skin and willfully
flexed body raise fundamental questions about portraiture in general and about the portraiture of
visually provocative women in

The Portrait Of Marie Antoinette
The artwork I decided to do my research and write about is the portrait of Marie Antoinette with her
Children. I found this portrait very interested in me; I am going to give you a brief information on
the artist of the artwork. This portrait was by Elisabeth Louise Vigee–Lerun and the portrait is oil on
canvas, 9' ½" x 7'5/8". The portrait was created in 1700 in France. It's a portrait of a French queen
who is Marie Antoinette along with her children as a good mother to her children, but there is no
sign of the father in the portrait. The portrait is a loving mother of four children, but only three are
shown in the portrait because of the children deceased. Also I see the portrait of a single mother who
is a loving mother who love her children daily and have a space of emptiness because of the loss of
her child who processed into his death at 11 months old.
The artist of the portrait is Elisabeth Vigee–Lebrun. She was born in Paris on April 16, 1755. She
was the daughter of Louis Vigee who was a pastel painter of moderate talent and devoted to his
artwork. When Elisabeth turned eleven her education was considered complete, she then left school
for good to return home to her parents and to pursue her dream as a painter like her father. While
back at home with her parents, she spend many of her hours in her father's studio experimenting to
her heart 's content with his crayons, and dutifully accompanied her mother, who, we are told, was
"good to the point of austerity,"

The Old Guitarist And Madame X

  • 1. The Old Guitarist And Madame X What is art? Over the course of this class, the conclusion I have come to is that anything can be art if someone believes it to be so. Art can be man–made, created from nature, or even something imagined or felt through the senses, yet it is completely subjective to the viewer to decide if what they see is classified as art. I often think of the phrase, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" during class because art is not always beautiful, or even pleasant, but it is a personal perspective. The Old Guitarist and Madame X are two creations that I believe are art, an opinion most people would agree with solely based off the success and fame of the creators, Pablo Picasso and John Singer Sargent, respectively. Being an artist is not always ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His works during this time were essentially monochromatic paintings in shades of blue and green, though there were occasionally other colors as accents. These blue shades, prevalent in The Old Guitarist, represented Picasso's severe depression as he drew into himself and kept isolated from the rest of society. In contrast, Madame X was painted as a Realist portrait, as expected during the Realism movement. However, the portrait also depicts clear influence of Impressionism in the background as Sargent blurred colors to make the exact definitions of her form unknown, forcing the viewer to feel the background rather than view it, and leave the space mysterious. Sargent was attempting to capture, in his own words, her "unpaintable beauty and hopeless laziness" and created a timeless painting. The stark contrast between the coloring and styles of these paintings make them indelible to art history. With attention to not only the artists, but the works themselves, I do believe The Old Guitarist and Madame X are both pieces of art. I believe them to be art because both pieces had the intent to capture some type of emotion or moment in time. For Picasso, he was mourning the death of his friend and painted the guitar as a symbol for immersing oneself in music, filling the space around the solitary figure. Picasso perhaps believed ... • 5. Analysis Of Madame X By John Singer Sargent Introduction This essay analyzes on the portrait of "Madame X" painted by John Singer Sargent as well as the background of the artist himself. It analyzes on the physical, visual and aesthetics characteristics. In addition, it argues on the controversial output given by critics of the time as well as analyzing and comparing two interpretations of the portrait by art historians from the 19th century and the 20th century. Background of John Singer John Singer Sargent (1884–1916) was the portrait artist for rulers and the upper class in both Europe and the United States of America. He was considered the greatest painter of his era. In addition, he was born abroad and an expatriate in his life; he loyally supported all things English, but never renounced his American citizenship. Sargent's works reveal the individuality and personality of his sitters. Sargent was one of the last great Realist artists of his time. Realism was a reaction against Romanticism and sprung out of the toppling of the old order during the French Revolution. Realism focused on the modern world instead of the historical, the truth instead of the varnished truth. Sargent refused to embrace the modern styles that became popular towards the last decades of his life, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She was known in Paris for her artful appearance. The artist hopes to enhance his reputation by painting and exhibiting her portrait. Working without a commission but with his sitter's complicity. The original version of the portrait by the artists daringly depicted his model with one of her jeweled shoulder straps falling seductively, so that her dress appeared almost strapless (refer to Appendix 1). However, due to the portrait receiving more ridicule than praise, Sargent repainted the shoulder strap and kept the work for over thirty years (refer to Appendix ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Biography Of John Singer Sargent 's Life John Singer Sargent began his life in Florence, Italy, on January 12th, 1856, and he grew up abroad, as his parents became expatriates, leaving behind their home in Philadelphia to enjoy living and travelling through Europe. It was because of this that Sargent's education was somewhat unconventional, for his study was mostly informal, and this may have contributed to his singular personality. Sargent's early exposure to European art and culture certainly had a profound effect on him, and he was able to converse readily in French, German, and Italian through his travels. The knowledge he gained through his life abroad proved to be quite helpful throughout his career, and this exposure to such diversity would later become evident in his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One of the best examples of Sargent's early style is his dramatic painting of 1882, El Jaleo, where his emulation of Velázquez' use of light and color is especially apparent (Fig 1). Possibly the painting in which Velázquez' influence is most obvious, however, is the painting The Daughters of Edward Darley Boit of 1882 (Fig 2). Its candid arrangement, subjects, vast shadows, luminosity, and muted colors bring to mind Velázquez' renowned painting Las Meninas (Fig. 3). Although Sargent was creating and studying art during the 19th century art movement of Impressionism, his art did not reflect this exposure, apart from some of his early works, and it is not generally considered Impressionist; nevertheless, certain of his artistic elements do show that there was some effect on his style from the artists of his time. One such characteristic of the Impressionist movement is Sargent's compositional arrangements that are somewhat candid. Additionally, a prominent feature of Sargent's art is his fascination with and masterful handling of light. Light was one of the principles that was of greatest importance in Impressionist art, and their art was "in reaction to the reflex of light, either real or imaginary." This definition of one of the aesthetic principles of Impressionism truly encapsulates the work of Sargent, for, even in his earliest art, his attention to light, its source – real or fairly ... This research paper will be analyzed of a painting that I observed from the Norton Simon Museum. It's the painting of Alcibiades on His Knees Before His Mistress, by Louis Jean Francois Lagrenee. The reason I chose this painting is because for me it was different from all other paintings I viewed in the museum. To me it was different because it depicts an image of masculinity as power, and at the same time femininity as inability and hopelessness. In this research paper I will be analyzing the purpose, context such as race and gender, and the history of the painting. In addition, I will be comparing this painting with a different painting that it's similar with its historical context from the "Exploring Art" textbook on the chapter "Race, Gender, Clan, And Class". From the mastery of French cuisine to the meaning of French art, the French have changed and evolved in many ways to produce a specific modern culture, the dignified culture of the French. One thing that parallels the progress and continuation of French culture is the role of women throughout France. Compared to other nations, the role and rights of women in France were confronted earlier and Women's suffrage was enacted earlier. The role of women in France, because of the early change in perception of women, enabled France to develop faster and with less conflict than other competing nations. Missing from the painting is Marat's murderer, Charlotte Corday. Corday was a tall, attractive and articulate 25–year–old who decided to travel all the way from Normandy to Paris in order to strike an important political blow. A very big supporter of the moderate Girondin Party, Corday blamed Marat for the Terror consuming the French Revolution, as faction warred against faction. While modeling herself after the heroes of antiquity whom she studied in Plutarch, she had planned to murder Jean Marat, like Julius Caesar, publically at the National Convention floor. In 1844 his family moved to Paris and by 1854, at the young age of thirteen, began painting flowers on porcelain cups and saucers. Through his parents, he began as a painter for the porcelain industry; his parents felt this was the perfect start for the beginnings of an artist. He came from the town of Limoges, where porcelain became almost a symbol of status and wealth. By 1860 he had left the porcelain factory in favor of becoming a full time painter; he was granted permission to copy paintings in the Lourve where he began to admire the eighteenth century masters. Impressionist art brought with it a characteristic and long–lasting originality and approachability that, until now, was never found in the art of earlier periods. The interests of these painters seem to be relevant to our own and function humbly by exciting our visual contentment. The term "impressionism" itself entails a great assemblage of extraordinary painters who have changed the artistic world, as we know it. The term impressionism has often been mistaken as a definition for every impressionist painter. Generally, terms of artistic movements tend to attempt to "...encompass the complexities and shifts of the diverse artists who exhibited under its banner." Many of the artists within the group opposed the term and instead preferred the name "Independents", while few even considered themselves members of other movements (Edgar Degas often considered himself a "Realist"). Despite this confliction, every impressionist painter shared a similar dedication to painting contemporary subjects in an informal style. In the face of this commitment impressionists still were divided into two principle camps. Led by Claude Monet and including Camille Pissarro, Alfred Sisley and sometimes Pierre–Auguste Renoir, the "Pure" Impressionists painted out–of–doors, recording their impulsive reactions to light and atmosphere. • 23. 19th Century Gender Roles Gender roles and stereotypes are nothing new in human society and can be traced back to the earliest known human civilizations like the Aztecs and the Mayans where men and women preformed specific tasks in order for their societies to thrive and flourish. Men and women equally farmed and took care of the family, both fulfilling the role as provider and nurturer (Robin 409). So there is a bit of confusion as to how somewhere down the line, 19th century civilizations diverged so far away from the original gender roles laid out by our ancestors. The industrial revolution caused a dramatic differentiation in the gender roles of men and women, particularly in the upper and middle class societies (Gonäs 92). One is able to see in Le Bain the nude woman with her clothes spread on the ground, which resemble clothes modern women were wearing at the time. The artist might sketch an outline of their subject prior to applying pigment to the surface. "Pigment" may be any number of natural substances with color, such as sulphur for yellow or cobalt for blue. The pigment is mixed with oil, usually linseed oil but other oils may be used as well. The various oils dry differently, creating assorted effects. Traditionally, artists mixed their own paints from raw pigments they often ground themselves and medium. This made portability difficult and kept most painting activities confined to the studio. This changed in the late 1800s, when oil paint in tubes became widely available. Artists could mix colors quickly and easily, which enabled, for the first time, relatively convenient plein air (outdoor) painting (a common approach in French Impressionism). The artist most often uses a brush to apply the paint. Brushes are made from a variety of fibers to create different effects. Soltes (2011) discusses Cassatt's, Woman and Child before a Washstand and Bowl (1889) and describes the tones of a delicate palate characteristic of Impressionist painting. He notes her brushwork is tighter than typical Impressionism and is similar to that of Degas, assuming their close relationship affected her artistic style as a painter. Her subject matter echoes the continuity of the Madonna and Christ child yet in a modern humanized version of an actual mother and child. Soltes (2011) regards Cassatt as: an important link between America and Europe because she is a consummate painter in the Impressionist mode of her own particularized style; but because she was well off enough to purchase Impressionist works and bring them back to the United States, which helped further tighten the link between American appreciation of Impressionism and the Impressionism being produced in France and in Europe in general" (L35, 22:28). Cassatt Vs Cassatte The two painting use the same medium and are technically part of the same movement but incorporate their own styles to their pieces which creates the contrast between the works visually. The subject of the two works are different even though the models of the figures within both of the pieces are known Cassatt's piece is very much meant to be focused on the action that's taking place, hence the title The Cup of Tea, while Sargent's piece is very much meant to be a portrait painting structured around the fact that it's a portrait of Madame Pierre Gautreau, hence the title Madame X. In terms of composition both works contain a figure placed generally within the center of the piece. The difference in composition would be that Mary Cassatt's piece ... Also remaining on the topic of the figures, Cassatt's figure is more conservatively dressed and seems of a distinct class and taste while Sargent's figure is dressed in a slick tight sleeveless dress which was the main source of controversy that surrounded this piece. In fact the original version of the painting featured the right strap of the gown suggestively slipping off the shoulder and was later repainted by Sargent in hopes to appease the critics and reverse some of the damage done by the piece. I found this portrait very interested in me; I am going to give you a brief information on the artist of the artwork. This portrait was by Elisabeth Louise Vigee–Lerun and the portrait is oil on canvas, 9' ½" x 7'5/8". The portrait was created in 1700 in France. It's a portrait of a French queen who is Marie Antoinette along with her children as a good mother to her children, but there is no sign of the father in the portrait. The portrait is a loving mother of four children, but only three are shown in the portrait because of the children deceased. Also I see the portrait of a single mother who is a loving mother who love her children daily and have a space of emptiness because of the loss of her child who processed into his death at 11 months old. The artist of the portrait is Elisabeth Vigee–Lebrun. She was born in Paris on April 16, 1755. She was the daughter of Louis Vigee who was a pastel painter of moderate talent and devoted to his artwork. When Elisabeth turned eleven her education was considered complete, she then left school for good to return home to her parents and to pursue her dream as a painter like her father. While back at home with her parents, she spend many of her hours in her father's studio experimenting to her heart 's content with his crayons, and dutifully accompanied her mother, who, we are told, was "good to the point of austerity," ...
