ANCHOR 1
Good morning students.
Today in our class we are going to start the fresh topic called ESSAY WRITING.
How many of you are aware of this kind of writing.
I think almost all of you. You all must have heard about this many times. Right
Well ok before I take you into technical part of this writing let us just hear and absorb the
interaction between students and teachers. Let us see what is happening there?
For MM – (show scene of a class where teacher is shown to be talking to the students
and on the blackboard it’s written ESSAY WRITING)
Teacher: good morning students today we are going to talk about a new writing skill
topic. Can anyone of you tell me why writing skills are paid so much
attention too?
Student : Ma’am I think to have proper knowledge and to be well versed in any
Language we have to equally concentrate on 4 skills. They are
• Speaking
• Listening
• Reading
• Writing
Teacher : Yes my child very good. These are keys to grasp any language.
The more we will read and listen; the better knowledge we’ll have.
The more we will write; the better will be our expression.
The more we will speak; the better will be our language.
Teacher: so all 4 of them are very important.
Student : excuse me ma’am, Writing an essay will also improve our expression in
the sense we will be able to explain our thoughts lucidly and speak our
mind and soul depending on our topic. Am I right ma’am.
Teacher : yes , and more of reading and listening will give you immense knowledge and
will make your vocabulary better. So later you can use that knowledge in
your writing too.
Well since you have understood the main point so now let us begin our
class.

What is the main idea towards writing an essay?
ANCHOR 3
Well students when writing a creative essay,
• you will still work towards developing a theme
• a creative essay is meant to communicate an idea in a different manner.
• One of the main goals of an essay is to make the subject area more interesting
Yes the topic may or may not be interesting but your writing makes it interesting.
See for example
A CHILD’S MEMORY
Topic seems to be vague and unclear. You might wonder about writing an essay on this
topic. How strange?
But to your surprise read the following lines to see how a simple and vague topic can be
made interesting.
VO WITH TEXT ON SCREEN
This is probably not the most interesting event or memory of my childhood, but it is
definitely the clearest. I had not yet reached the age of 5, yet I was still going to
compete against 5 to 6 year old children. I was used to being the youngest: that was the
case at my school, swimming lessons and between my cousins. It made no difference
to me how old they were, I was going to win this race! This was my first real swimming
race with a proper audience, cup and medals I had to make sure everything went as I
had dreamt the night before. It was a hot June afternoon, and I was anxious to get in the
water because I was boiling and all the heat was making me sweaty and sticky, I could
feel my hair burn on my head the stones underneath me were scorching my legs and
feet. My best friend and I were talking about our race, and how excited we were to soon

be on holiday: we were both going to spend most of our time in Milan, at the pool! He
was a year older than me too, but unlike the others he did not under estimate me, he
knew very well I was a good swimmer and ..
ANCHOR 4
Well this essay was only given as example to clear the point to you.
Such type of essay is called narrative essay. Well details you will read later.
Is there any structure for writing an essay?
There is no pre-determined pattern for the writing that requires writing a specific number
of paragraphs or including certain information in specific paragraphs.
Rather, you simply need to take care to arrange the essay in a manner that is logical
and that flows together. Students, Now, what is the first thing to concentrate on while
writing an essay. It is Topic.
Choose a Topic for Your Essay
You may have no choice as to your topic. If this is the case, you still may not be ready
to jump to the next step.
• Should it be a general overview,
• or a specific analysis of the topic?
1. If it should be an overview, then you are probably ready to move to the next
step.
2. If it should be a specific analysis, make sure your topic is fairly specific.
3. If it is too general, you must choose a narrower subtopic to discuss
For example,
The topic "Computers" is a general one.
• If your objective is to write an overview, this topic is suitable.
• If your objective is to write a specific analysis, this topic is too general.
• You must narrow it to something like "Computers in Education"
• Once you have determined that your topic will be suitable, you can move on.
ANCHOR 5
Well after this next step is to Organize Your Ideas
Well but how to do that?
How to select what is important or not?
To overcome this dilemma we organize our data then COMPOSE IT TOO.
The purpose of an outline or diagram is to put your ideas about the topic on paper, in a
moderately organized format. The structure you create here may still change before the
essay is complete, so don't agonize over this.
4. PES/ENG/X/122
The basic work required is to do rough work. Children do follow these steps to give a
good start to your essay.
STEP1 write the topic .think about it.
STEP2 draw horizontal lines and write the main points coming in your mind.
STEP3 points should be written in the following ways
• If you are trying to persuade, you want to write your best arguments.
• If you are trying to explain a process, you want to write the steps that should be
followed.
STEP4 group these into categories.try using Beginning, Middle, and End.
STEP5 write the facts or information that support that main idea.
When you have finished, you have the basic structure for your essay and are ready to
continue.
How do we compose our ideas?
ANCHOR 6
Now that you have decided, at least tentatively, what information you plan to present in
your essay, you are ready to write your ESSAY.
NOW THE MAIN WORK IS TO DECIDE
• What point you will be making.
• What do the main ideas and supporting ideas that you listed say about your
topic?
• Your composition will have two parts.
The first part states the topic.
VO WITH TEXT ON SCREEN
• Computers in Education
• Television-A necessary evil.
• An Accident
ANCHOR 7
The second part states the point of the essay.
VO WITH TEXT ON SCREEN
• has an important role today
• Has both good and bad points
5. PES/ENG/X/122
• Details of the accident
ANCHOR 8
Or in the second part you could simply list the three main ideas you will discuss.
VO WITH TEXT ON SCREEN
• Has an important role today; opens the door to a lot of information;brings the
world closer to you.
• Today its easily available;useful if viewed selectively;can also be an ‘idiot box’ if
viewed at random..
• How, when and why the accident occured
ANCHOR 9
Once you have formulated your composition you are ready to continue.
Now you have to begin writing an essay.
You have to divide your essay into 3-4 paragraphs.
A) Introductory paragraph- introduces the main idea of your essay. A good
opening paragraph captures the interest of your reader and tells why your topic is
important.
How do I write one?
ANCHOR 10
• Write the thesis statement. The main idea of the essay is stated in a single
sentence called the thesis statement.
• You must limit your entire essay to the topic you have introduced in your thesis
statement.
• The introduction should be designed to attract the reader's attention and give her
an idea of the essay's focus.
Begin with an attention grabber
2. Provide some background information about your topic.
You can use
• interesting facts,
• quotations,
• definitions of important terms you will use
• anecdotes
• dialogues etc.
.

Example:
Do children feel about watching TV? Watching TV has been a part of life in India for
over forty years. It has evolved into an extremely popular form of information and
entertainment, watched by millions of people, all over the world. The programmes have
gone through several changes since the time it was first introduced in India.
Next step is to write
B) Supporting paragraphs- They develop the main idea of your essay.
How do I write them?
VO WITH TEXT ON SCREEN
• List the points that develop the main idea of your essay.
• Place each supporting point in its own paragraph.
• Develop each supporting point with facts, details, and examples.
ANCHOR 11
You need to have lot of information about your topic to write supporting paragraphs.
To connect your supporting paragraphs, you should use special transition words.
Transition words link your paragraphs together and make your essay easier to read.
Use them at the beginning and end of your paragraphs.
Next is to write
C) Summary paragraph- it comes at the end of your essay after you have finished
developing your ideas. The summary paragraph is often called a "conclusion."
How do I write one?
ANCHOR 12
• Restate the strongest points of your essay that support your main idea.
• Conclude your essay by restating the main idea in different words.
• Give your personal opinion or suggest a plan for action.
VO WITH TEXT ON SCREEN
Example:
Overall, the changes that occurred in TV programmes have helped to improve the
general awareness of common people. Watching TV is becoming more exciting as a
result of changes in the past few years. For these reasons, today it would not be right to
call it a necessary evil. We could rephrase it by saying that ‘watching TV is a necessary
part of our daily routine, if the programmes are viewed selectively.’
ANCHOR 13
Students always remember that
• The introduction and conclusion complete the paragraphs of your essay.
• Don't stop just yet! One more step remains before your essay is truly finished.
7. PES/ENG/X/122
Add the Finishing Touches
How are they done?
ANCHOR 14
They are done by following these simple steps.
o Check the order of your paragraphs.
o Check your writing
o Have you run a spell checker or a grammar checker?
o Check the instructions for the assignment.i.e.
Are your margins correct?
Have you titled it as directed?
What other information (name, date, etc.) must you include?
These aids cannot catch every error, but they might catch errors that you have missed.
Once you have checked your work and perfected your formatting,
Your essay is finished.
Well students now we will see different types of essays.
• Descriptive essay
• Narrative essay
• Imaginative
• Reflective
• Define
What do the following means? This, you will get to know in the next class.
Now we are going to read one example to see how much have we understood?
VO WITH TEXT ON SCREEN
EXAMPLE
An Accident
ANCHOR 15
Now students your topic is An Accident
Is it easy? You must be wondering what to write on it.
Have you ever seen any Accident?
If yes then it will be little easier to write for you. Because you are aware of
the scene,
the atmosphere there,
what do people do?
what was your experience being there, do share that .
and any other thing if you want to mention.
8. PES/ENG/X/122
BUT
In case you have not seen any accident then there is no need to get sad.
You must have seen one in the movies or on TV.
So now your work is to imagine that same scene at the accident and what would you
have done if you would have been there.
So children this is the right approach for writing any essay. Let us read our example.
VO WITH TEXT ON SCREEN
It was the middle of springtime and across from my house where the accident took
place. As I came out of my house and walked towards my school, hurriedly, my
attention was suddenly diverted to a huge bang! Suddenly I was reminded of a terrible
explosion and I looked towards the direction of the sound, on the other side of the road.
What I saw was just unbelievable. I saw a car right under a huge truck and the truck
resting on its front wheels, half turned to its left side! For a moment, I was dumb and
motionless, unable to react.
Slowly I gathered my wits and went to the spot of the accident. Already a small crowd
had gathered. It took some time for the police van and the rescue team to arrive. While
waiting, we could not bear to see the car driver trapped badly under the van. It was
pathetic to see the truck-driver bleeding profusely .Luckily, there was a Doctor amongst
the crowd. He guided some of us to extricate the trapped driver from under the truck.
The first step of this operation was making sure that the crowd was made to disperse a
little, as the atmosphere was becoming too suffocating for the two , who were the
victims of the accident. The man inside the car was slowly dragged out, but the right
arm and leg were badly smashed! His right forehead was also bleeding profusely. It was
really a harrowing experience to see so much of blood and injury. Anyway, soon the
Police Van and the Ambulance arrived at the spot and the two victims were picked up
and taken to the nearest hospital. Unfortunately, though the car driver was breathing in
spite of so much of injury, the truck driver was seen unconscious as he was put on the
stretcher. Police were trying to search their pockets and wallets, to know their
whereabouts, so that they could inform their relatives. It was a horrible sight within
seconds-glass pieces scattered all over, with spots of fresh blood all over the place!
After witnessing this accident, I was very upset when I reached school, rather late.
When asked about my delay, I was so disturbed, that I broke down in front of my
teacher, who consoled me a lot. I felt a little relieved after narrating the whole incident to
her.She explained to me that road rage was the main reason of these accidents.
Nowadays there is very little patience in us .Everyone is in a hurry and do not want to
give way to others. There is zero tolerance in general. As a result, people sometimes
jump the traffic rules, which consequently lead to such terrible accidents. This incident
was an eye-opener for me, as I learnt a very important lesson for my whole life.I
9. PES/ENG/X/122
promised to myself that if ever I drive any vehicle, I must maintain my calm and obey
the traffic rules, so that at least I would be driving safely!.
ANCHOR 16
So students did you see how vividly the student has shared his experience with you in
describing the impact of the accident.
In the first paragraph , he introduced you to the time and venue of the accident, and how
sudden it was.
These are called the INTRODUCTORY LINES.
In the second paragraph, he shared his painful and harrowing experience being there.

. While waiting, we could not bear to see the car driver trapped badly under the

ANCHOR 17
Can you feel the pain, and agony of the writer?
You have to imagine yourself in that situation or think that if you have come across that
situation then what would you have done.
Look at the concluding paragraph.

ANCHOR 18
The writer is all at rest and he concludes his essay by calling it a learning experience.
So students by now you must have understood how we should proceed step by step to
write any essay.
If we go step by step then we can make a boring topic also very interesting.
Students this is exercise for you
I am giving you SUMMARY

INTRODUCTORY PARAGRAPH
VO WITH TEXT ON SCREEN
Today, computers have taken us by storm! Every urban home has a computer of
its own. Every marketplace is filled with cyber cafes and computer classes are
mushrooming everywhere. Naturally, we as young students are also caught in the
storm.
CONCLUDING PARAGRAPH
VO WITH TEXT ON SCREEN
In conclusion, I just want to emphasis that computers, though feed us with all the
necessary information and knowledge, can never take the place of a teacher It is
not possible to have active interaction with a computer, as you can have with
your teacher. Computer can be a very good support system for your learning
process. But you cannot do away with classroom and teaxher!
