Year 11 Revision Booklet
AQA English GCSE
A very crash guide to every question!
Are you a natural born winner?
Are you proud to say you
are not a wimp and
always give things a shot
rather than just give up?
Then you WILL succeed –
so read on and use this
booklet to revise!
You are very likely to FAIL
if you do not:
1. Have a go at every
question.
2. Spend 5 mins writing a rough plan on your
paper for each question. This is essential and
shows the examiner you mean business!
3. Answer both of the longest questions.
They carry loads of marks.
4. Use DAFT FROG FACES in your long
questions and in your comparison
question.
5. Use FISH CLUB when comparing
presentation devices.
REMEMBER – The examiner does not want to know
just your ideas/opinions on the topics.
In the exam questions – they also want to see your
English GCSE skills!
Questions 1 and 2

In the ‘reading’ questions where you are asked
to look at sources –
YOU must QUOTE the source
document
PEE Point, evidence, expand
INFERENCE Talk about what you think
the writer was trying to create/emotions? Can
you read between the lines and show another
meaning/interpretation of what is written?
GAP Who? Why? What? Where? When?
Comparing Presentational Devices
This may well be question 4. They want
you to compare what it LOOKS like not
what is written.

Comparing the language used
Probably question 3 – Do it Last! – There
are easier questions that will get you
more marks – but do not miss it out!
Say a lot about a little! Use quotes (PEE)
Compare - Use words like these
G A P (Genre, Audience, Tone)
T I N (Tone, inference, narrative)
Sentence lengths, vocabulary, paragraphs,
direct speech, emotional vocabularyor NOT!
PVA – the glue to succeed!
Look at the punctuation, verbs
and adjectives.

The last looooooong questions (probably 5 and 6)
These have loads of marks
Do a plan: Put DAFTFROG FACES
down the side of your paper and tick off when you have
used them. Show the examiner you know what you are
doing.
1. Intro – pull in the reader
2 – 5. Develop your answer with clear,
interesting paragraphs. You do not have
to tell the truth. Be daring! Show you are
different!
6. Big conclusion – finish with a whopper
statement and powerful sentence.

Writing to advise, persuade, inform, explain, describe.

  • 1. Year 11 Revision Booklet AQA English GCSE A very crash guide to every question! Are you a natural born winner? Are you proud to say you are not a wimp and always give things a shot rather than just give up? Then you WILL succeed – so read on and use this booklet to revise!
  • 2. You are very likely to FAIL if you do not: 1. Have a go at every question. 2. Spend 5 mins writing a rough plan on your paper for each question. This is essential and shows the examiner you mean business! 3. Answer both of the longest questions. They carry loads of marks. 4. Use DAFT FROG FACES in your long questions and in your comparison question. 5. Use FISH CLUB when comparing presentation devices. REMEMBER – The examiner does not want to know just your ideas/opinions on the topics. In the exam questions – they also want to see your English GCSE skills!
  • 3. Questions 1 and 2 Use your highlighter pen! In the ‘reading’ questions where you are asked to look at sources – YOU must QUOTE the source document PEE Point, evidence, expand INFERENCE Talk about what you think the writer was trying to create/emotions? Can you read between the lines and show another meaning/interpretation of what is written? GAP Who? Why? What? Where? When?
  • 4. Comparing Presentational Devices This may well be question 4. They want you to compare what it LOOKS like not what is written. Remember what we learnt in class – squeeze the oranges! Draw this diagram – show a plan F Font I Italics/Images S Slogans/Subheading H Heading C Colour L Layout U Underline B Bold/Brackets/Bullets/boxes What is the same? What is missing?   • 5. Comparing the language used Probably question 3 – Do it Last! – There are easier questions that will get you more marks – but do not miss it out! Say a lot about a little! Use quotes (PEE) Compare - Use words like these G A P (Genre, Audience, Tone) T I N (Tone, inference, narrative) Sentence lengths, vocabulary, paragraphs, direct speech, emotional vocabularyor NOT! PVA – the glue to succeed! Look at the punctuation, verbs and adjectives. What other devices have beenused? Both Similarly Likewise However On the other hand Unlike Source 1....whereas source 2...
  • 6. The last looooooong questions (probably 5 and 6) These have loads of marks Do a plan: Put DAFTFROG FACES down the side of your paper and tick off when you have used them. Show the examiner you know what you are doing. 1. Intro – pull in the reader 2 – 5. Develop your answer with clear, interesting paragraphs. You do not have to tell the truth. Be daring! Show you are different! 6. Big conclusion – finish with a whopper statement and powerful sentence. Make sure you use the main conventions for Writing to advise, persuade, inform, explain, describe.
  • 7. THEY WANT TO SEE YOU CAN USE DAFT FROG FACES on your own!
