Social policies have impacted my life before I was even aware of the term social policy. Today, social policy impacts my personal life and my
professional life daily. I am impacted personally by many social policies that pertain particularly to higher education and women's rights. Social
policies that increase assess for adult learners and reduce financial barriers for higher education has allowed me to return to higher education. I am an

I work with families that are involved in child protective services and I am always amazed at the lack of social policies that are in place to assist
these families. These families often times are faced with poverty, addiction, and homelessness. Although there are many social policies that improve the
quality of life for individuals that live in poverty there continues to be needs that go unmet for families living in poverty. There are several treatment
facilities that treat addiction, but many of the clients that I work with do not have insurance that the treatment facilities accept. A typical client that
suffers from addiction does not have the financial ability to pay cash for treatment. I recently inquired about the cost of treatment for a client without
insurance and was informed that the cost of inpatient care was approximately $1,000 a day. There is no client on my caseload that can afford to pay
the cost of inpatient treatment. The lack of affordable housing for families living in poverty is another very frustrating social policy. One town that I

Introduction Several states have recently begun to enact legislation that requires welfare recipients to submit to drug tests before they are eligible to
receive any public assistance. The purpose of mandatory drug testing is to prevent the potential abuse of taxpayer money, help individuals with drug
problems, and ensure that public money is not subsidizing drug habits (Wincup, 2014). While these are noble intentions, current programs are not
meeting these standards. States must now abide by past court rulings that limit the number of applicants they can screen and for what reasons. Despite
these rulings, several states continue to pursue legislation free of legal scrutiny. Among these states are Missouri, Kansas, and Mississippi where drug
testing legislation has already been established ("Kansas to test welfare recipients for drugs," 2014, p. 8.) I would argue that the courts need to decide
if the benefits of these programs outweigh the costs. There are both constitutional and public policy issues associated with implementing mandatory
drug testing for welfare recipients. Considering the ineffectiveness of current and past programs, it must be decided if these programs should be

if circumstances changed as a result of the court's decision, any harm the child has suffered or may be at risk of suffering and the capability of

Under section 17 of The Children Act (1989) it is the local authority's (LA) duty to safeguard and promote the welfare of children in their area who
are in need. The children from the case study are both classed as in need as they were witnesses to unsafe drug abuse and were living in a dirty home
(Coram CLC Children's legal Centre ,2014). Once there is a suitable reason for concern it is the local authority's duty to investigate the case further
under section 47 of The Children Act (1989) the authority shall make enquiries to establish whether they should take any action to safeguard or
